Craft Brewers Conference & Awards Moved to September By Staff
T
he Brewers Association announced the 38th edition of its Craft Brewers Conference and Brew Expo America will be rescheduled and moved from March 29 in San Diego to September 9-12 in Denver. “Shifting to September in Denver provides us with an opportunity to potentially convene in person, making it possible to do what brewers do best—build community through sharing our expertise and passion, and learn from each other,” said Bob Pease, Brewers Association president and CEO. Additionally, the Great American Beer Festival competition and awards ceremony will be held on September 10 as part of the conference. Registration for the 2021 Conference will open in mid to late April, according to the Brewers Association. Attendees will be required — at this point — to show proof of vaccination.
More Virginia Award Winners Late last year, the results of the US Open Beer Championship were announced for some 140 styles of beer. Among the winners from Virginia: 6 Bears & A Goat Brewing Co (Silver medal, O’Dark Thirty Stout, Classic Dry Irish Stout category), Ballad Brewing (Silver medal, Kolsch, German Kolsch category), Trapezium Brewing (Silver medal, Chasing Ponies, Sour/ Belgian Lambic category), 2 Silos Brewing (Silver medal, Pumpkin Ale, Pumpkin category), Barrel Chest Brewing (Silver medal, Hooga, Spirits Barrel Aged Beer non-whiskey category and a gold medal, Perpetuelle,White Wine Barrel Aged Beer category), and Benchtop Brewing (Gold medal, Long Funky Streaks Batch 2, Barrel-Aged Brett/Wild Beer category). The competition was open to independent breweries around the world and to award-winning homebrewers. Over 6,000 beers were entered. -6-

Self-Righteous Returns After 14 years in self-imposed exile, Self-Righteous Black IPA has once again been unleashed on a thirsty public requesting its release. The heavily hopped IPA is brewed with dark malt, giving it both a smooth malty character as well as a highly anticipated smack of bitterness. “We get ‘BRING BACK SSR’ comments on just about everything we post to socials,” said Stone’s Senior Marketing Content Specialist David Pope.“Pictures of Stone IPA, videos of our bottling line, a clip of a kitten playing in a Stone Buenaveza box... there’s always a ‘BRING BACK SSR’ somewhere in the comment section.Well, we heard you. It’s awesome to finally reply back with an enthusiastic ‘OK!’” In addition to bringing back a classic fan favorite, Stone Brewing is also releasing two health conscious beers for the new year. Stone Features & Benefits (F+B) IPA is a gluten reduced, low calorie (95), low carb (2.9 grams), and low ABV (4.0%) beer and Stone Delicious IPA (7.7% ABV) is gluten reduced. These are part of their Stone Clean Slate promotion subtitled “Make Good Choices.” We’ll drink to that — To your health!

brewNEWS Staff from the Bakehouse at Chelsea and Elation Brewing Company
Elation Brewing Adds Bakehouse By Jeff Maisey
A
nyone driving on North Colley Avenue at night can’t help but notice Elation Brewing Company with its blue and deep purple glow of theatrical lighting illuminating and reflecting off the large, stainless steel fermenting tanks behind the curved bar. John McCormick, owner of The Bakehouse at Chelsea, had a similar reaction on his first encounter. “On my first time visiting Elation, I was really overwhelmed by the space,” said McCormick.“I had driven by it before and I came at night. It is just such a beautiful space to walk into. It’s so inviting, warm and comfortable.” McCormick noticed the large fermenting tanks. They reminded him of something he was very familiar with — a wood fire pizza oven. McCormick was enjoying a beer and struck up a conversation with Kenny VanHook, the brewery owner. “We hit it off and then I just said,‘Hey, would you consider imagining a pizza oven in the corner with The Bakehouse making pizzas,’” McCormick recalled.“It was sort of a half-joking statement. Kenny circled back a couple weeks later and we started moving forward with a plan.” Award-winning Elation Brewing Company first opened to the public on February 27, 2019. Like all independent craft breweries, Elation produces a core group of beers such as Larchmont Lager, Schwaz, Notice This (West Coast IPA), and Rose Gose (a tart gose) as well as a rotating list of seasonal and one-off, limited release products. Elation also offers its customers cider, mead and wine on draft as well as a small menu of food items prepared in its in-house kitchen. Where the current kitchen is hidden from view in the back of the brewery, the soon to operate The Bakehouse at Elation will be entertainingly visible. Behind a curved wood serving station (a design consistent with the brewery’s bar), a staff member of the bakery will make from scratch pizzas by order and cook each in an attractive oven for all to see. -8-
FEBRUARY 2021
“All of the dough, toppings, everything will be made at Elation,” said McCormick. The Bakehouse will enhance both the quality and variety of food directly offered to Elation patrons. The Bakehouse at Chelsea opened in May 2014.You could call it a “craft” bakery in that the chefs and bakers use fresh, high quality, and organic ingredients for an assortment of pastries and breads. Wood fire pizzas — specifically Neapolitan style — are also a specialty using naturally leavened dough and shaped by hand. Popular Bakehouse pizzas include the Margherita, Bacon Gouda, Carnivore, Herbivore, and White. When the pizzas are ready to roll so too will a new beer made for the occasion. Head brewer Bob Sweeney has a beer fermenting for the official grand opening of The Bakehouse at Elation. “The beer’s called Bakehouse Bohemian Pilsner,” shared Sweeney.“The idea behind it was to be something to be enjoyed with pizza.” The beer will be lagering for a total of six weeks. The key ingredients are Bohemian pilsner malts and Saaz hops to make this a true traditional pils. Talk about authenticity: Saaz hops, named after the Czech city of Zatec (Saaz in German), make up more than 66 percent of the hop crop in Czech Republic and are used extensively in Czech/Bohemian pilsners. “It’ll be pretty true to style, refreshing and light,” said Sweeney. “Easy to wash-down pizza with.” The Bakehouse at Elation is projected to open right before Valentine’s Day. In addition to the Bakehouse Bohemian Pilsner, the brewery’s upcoming beer releases will feature a 9.5% ABV Baltic Porter at the end of March as well as canned versions of its popular draft brews. According to McCormick, if The Bakehouse at Elation is successful, he will look to partner with other breweries in the 757 region for similar opportunities to expand his brand.

So You Wanna Be a Brewer?
Bridgette Turner gets 2021 off to a fun start. Photo courtesy of Mustang Sally Brewing Co.
By Bridgette Turner
P
retty much everyone thinks that being a professional brewer is the coolest job ever. It’s a dream job. Everyone I meet is excited when I tell them that I make beer for a living. It’s soOoOoo awesome. Strangers automatically think I’m super cool, and I have a great life. I’ve got it made, and I figured out the adulting stuff. I have a cool job that I love.Yup. That’s true. Yet, I never voluntarily tell new people about my occupation because people are weirdly intrigued. Everyone likes my job too much, and they want to talk about it more. Once they know what I do, the most popular follow up questions are,“Wow! How did you get into that?” And,“So are you a brewmaster?” Sometimes it’s, “Cool! Do you get to drink beer all day?” I have several well-rehearsed responses to these questions. My answers depend on the situation, the person asking me the questions, the lunar phase, and how long it’s been since my last snack. No matter what, I’m always nice because pretentious beer people suck, and I usually share a sassy little detail about my brewery life. The sans-sassy answers are,“I used to be a bartender and one day I decided to be a brewer instead.” And, “I would never call myself a brewmaster.” Lastly,“I usually pour myself a beer at the end of the day. But yes, drinking beer everyday is legitimately part of my job.” After the inevitable and overly-excited Q&As, people want to know more about being a brewer. They especially want to know what brewing is like without XY chromosomes. People seem to enjoy female brewers even more than the typical cis-whitebearded-penis brewers. It’s kind of weird. Is it cool weird? Sure. Did I say penis? Yes. It’s definitely odd to tell the same anecdotes about my job to every new person I meet, but I’m used to it. People are weird and wonderful, and I’m always happy to answer their questions. Even the ones about being a girl. Unfortunately for all brewers, regardless of their gender identity or zodiac sign, no one ever asks what we actually do at work all day. People think the job is cool, but they have no idea what a glorious shit-show it really is. Try asking me how I spend 8+ hours a day in a haunted warehouse full of stainless steel tanks and brewery hoses. How many spray nozzles and gaskets have I replaced in my life? How do I identify the faint sound of a faulty CO2 connection, and what do I do when every pallet is broken or a stupid size? Why doesn’t anyone manufacture a good squeegee? How often does the production schedule change, and how many colors of dry erase markers do you need to brew quality beer? What’s the best music for canning days, and how long does it take to fold 500-case trays? Do I love my forklift more than my best friend? To be straight up, brewing beer kind of sucks. It’s hard. It’s frustrating. It’s soul-crushing, back breaking, never ending stress. There’s lots of cursing, tons of self doubt, and sometimes there’s tears and temper tantrums. I’ve seen brewers kick empty buckets - 10 -

and expensive pumps. I’ve seen them silently walk away with rageface, and I’ve seen them freak out and yell at their coworkers and friends. I’ve personally walked out of a shift and gone the f**k home. I came back the next day, but I can’t count the number of times I wondered if I was really good enough, or capable enough, to do the job. Oddly, this probably rings true for everyone’s occupation. But, I’m just making beer, right? Is it still a dream job? The answer is yes, absolutely. It’s super cool, and I like to think I’m pretty cool too for sticking with it. Turns out, I am capable enough to do this psycho job. Brewing kind of sucks, but I love it. It’s hard, but it’s awesome. I love mopping the floors and taking out the trash everyday. I hate doing inventory, but I love getting grain shipments and eating Nut Rolls. I hate taking gravities, but I love hitting my numbers. I make a barf face at coconut beers, but I still love brewing them because it’s totally fun. I’m dancing on the brewhouse deck and laughing at dumb jokes 99% of every day. Professionally brewing beer is definitely the best job ever, and I wouldn’t change a thing. My job is better than yours. It’s a dream job for sure. 100. P.S. About that brewmaster question that everyone asks...you can call yourself a brewmaster when the title is bestowed upon you by your fellow brewing professionals. It takes decades of hard labor, proven success, and commendable reputation. I’ve only met one brewmaster in my life, and she was an elderly, jovial nun in Germany. Her name is Sister Doris, and she’s a badass. She told me that her bottling line sucks, but her brewery life is pretty damn good. Bridgette Turner is head brewer at Mustang Sally Brewing Company in Chantilly,Virginia.

we love beertenders
Our feature “Beertenders We Love” is so popular that we decided to
make it an annual spotlight! A beertender (bartender at a brewery) can make or break your craft brewery experience. Beertenders are at the frontline of the brewery - the friendly face (behind a mask these days) serving your beer and providing in-depth knowledge of the selections on tap, often providing recommendations to the novice or adventurous beer drinker.
As a salute to these all-important employees, we asked our fans on social media as well as those in management/ownership roles across Virginia to share with our readers their favorite, outstanding beertender. Here’s what they had to say...
Timmy Miller
Final Gravity Brewing Co., Richmond
Leah Mills
Water’s End Brewery - Potomac Mills, Woodbridge Leah has been with us for just under a year, but she is already a seasoned veteran in our opinion. She routinely goes above and beyond with her duties and responsibilities as part of our taproom management team. Always cheerful, smiling, and ready to serve a cold beer to our customers, Leah is flexible, very detail oriented and a joy to work with. Our customers will agree as well. We all know times are tough, but Leah makes the most of every opportunity she has when providing a great experience for our customers. Cheers to Leah! - 12 -
FEBRUARY 2021
Timmy Miller is the glue that holds everything together at Final Gravity. He has been with us since 2016 and has learned to do literally everything we do here from the ground up. Behind the bar, he is known for his witty sense of humor and is well loved by all of our regulars with amazing recall of customers’ names and their favorite beers. His knowledge of beer comes from his passion for home brewing. So, not only can Timmy tell you all about the beer he just poured for you, he can also tell you how you can make something just like it at home. While he spends the majority of his time here behind the bar, he also regularly helps customers in our home brew shop, Original Gravity, and has experience with both brewing and packaging in our brewery. Timmy loves to experiment with new things when brewing and whether it’s trying a new style like a Brut IPA, trying his hand at non-alcoholic beer, or perfecting a home-made hard seltzer, he’s up for any challenge. Look for a Timmy beer on the menu at Final Gravity soon!
Maker’s Craft Brewery, Norfolk Kortney hales all the way from Oklahoma and brings her “Okie” spirit behind the bar. She is quick with a smile and always makes our guests feel welcome the moment they walk in the door. She knows our beers in and out and ensures everyone gets the one that is right for them. Kortney can be seen all over our taproom and our bier garden, interacting with our guests, petting all the dogs, and making sure everyone is having a great time. She is also our number one purveyor of country music, bringing a little flavor of her western roots all the way to Virginia. We don’t know what we would do without her, but we’re glad she’s here. Kortney is also a full-time student studying sociology at Oklahoma State, or as she would say, “Go Pokes!”

Misty Kuhns
Settle Down Easy Brewing, Falls Church Misty is the wife of Frank Kuhns, one of the owners of Settle Down Easy Brewing. When we set out to open Settle Down Easy Brewing, we knew that we would need help from Misty, but little did we know she would help so much during the pandemic. Misty is an elementary school teacher in Fairfax County, and after class, Misty would help the brewery by hand canning beer to-go and run the register every night to help the family business! Settle Down Easy Brewing was founded 1 year following the death of Frank’s younger brother Bryan. As a bartender himself, Bryan’s last call song was Ramble on Rose by the Grateful Dead. Misty and Bryan were very close and we just know he loves looking down and seeing Misty draw a draft for the most fantastic fans of our brewery in Falls Church! Settle Down Easy, Ramble on BABY!
"Melissa provides the best tasting room experience for regulars and newbies alike. Always ready to provide an always-spot-on beer recommendation. Makes me push my beer-drinking comfort zone. Moreover, Melissa is Tidewater’s foremost advocate in promoting all craft brewing in the Commonwealth, whether she’s representing at festivals or pouring pints at the taproom."

As the ultimate brew ambassador at COVA, he works hard as our Beer team coordinator and our head brewer’s right hand! Outside of his expert knowledge of craft brewing, Andrew has an interest in Real Estate, men’s fashion, and he adores his beloved pet cats. Andrew’s energy and humor is infectious and he genuinely cares about his COVA team members and each customer who visits COVA. When he’s not busy at the beer tap wall, you can find him enjoying a COVA IPA, printing beer can labels, or making Tik-Toks while working in the COVA production area. Come meet our goofy, kindhearted Andrew. You’ll love him just as much as we do.
Gavin Deane
Random Row Brewing Co., Charlottesville Gavin is the last remaining original beertender at Random Row. He began his beertending career in September 2016, when Random Row opened, shortly after he turned 21. Since then, Gavin has expanded his role at the brewery. As an assistant in the brewery, his role as a cellarman has included moving beer around from tank to tank, washing and filling kegs, canning, and occasionally, helping out with brewing. So, Gavin is sure to know more about the beer in your glass than most bartenders you will encounter around other breweries and bars. So next time you see him behind the bar, be sure to ask your most detailed questions about what you are drinking!

We lucked out with Lisa. She has continued to be an integral part of our team in West Creek since 2018. She is incredibly knowledgeable about the craft beer world, keeps us all laughing behind the bar, and is a customer service superstar! As our taprooms opened back up during the pandemic, Lisa has been our curbside/ pick-up order guru. Keeping dozens of preorders organized, including box pick-ups for our Family Tree Beer Club, and tracking customer requests is no small feat. She also knows how to build out a well-packed beer cooler, which is truly a work of art. Outside of beer slinging, Lisa is a dedicated cat mom and loves supporting other local craft breweries around RVA.

Having worked in the brewery and with each elemental aspect of both the fruits and hops that go into our beverages, he knows the process like no other.

Ben’s been with The Virginia Beer Company for over two years now, joining the VBC family after active duty in the National Guard and U.S. Army. Originally an Army brat, Ben hails from Buckroe Beach in Hampton. In between his service and the service industry, Ben has been a newspaper crime reporter, golf course greenskeeper, infantry platoon leader, air defender, court stenographer, and hotel sales coordinator. On the side, he’s a rugby player, stand-up comedian, husband, dad, son, brother, and all-around great guy with the gift of gab. Ben’s one of the best brand ambassadors a brewery could ask for, both professionally (when assisting our Sales Team with samplings in the market) and personally. You’ll never meet a beertender who knows you so well, even if it’s your first time meeting Ben.
Taylor Smith
Three Roads Brewing Company, Farmville Taylor exhibits all the qualities that contribute to an excellent Three Roads beertender. She takes initiative in all situations, she has the knowledge and kindness to successfully guide new staff members, and her passion to learn and willingness to teach are invaluable attributes. Deanne FirkinGood
Hawksbill Brewing Company, Luray “Grown here, brewed here” is the mantra of the Hawksbill Brewing Company in Luray. So, it’s not surprising that bartender Deanne FirkinGood was born and bred here, a descendant of the region’s first settlers. A veteran of several food establishments in Luray, averaging 5 years at each, she plans to stay longer at the Brewery. “I love this job. It’s easy to welcome people and make sure they enjoy their stay. We have great products. There’s something here for everyone’s taste.” She also has fun helping people get to know each other and introducing them to the many events, organizations, and activities in Luray and Page County. “I see myself as a connector,” she says. “It’s what I do best.” She also appreciates a challenge. “Not everyone under the sun can make people happy. When people come in and they’re grumpy, I try to cheer them up. I can always find something that helps them smile.

Tom Stanley
Oozlefinch Beers & Blending, Fort Monroe Tom Stanley began his journey at Oozlefinch in April of 2017. Since that time, he’s proven not only his loyalty to the brand, but also his devotion to the art of great beer and providing amazing customer service. Those who know Tom are quickly drawn in by the balanced way he navigates through life. He’s an educator to the younger generation by day, beertender (and maybe educator as well) to the older generations by night, a talented musician, and a nature enthusiast. All that know him will attest to his calming energy that is felt by coworkers and customers alike. Tom’s dedication to Oozlefinch Beers & Blending is evident...there is not a task too big or too small that he doesn’t approach with passion and pride. His work ethic and enthusiasm raises the bar for all those who work alongside with him. After nearly four years of being part of the Oozlefinch family, we’ve all learned that Tom is one of the “Coolest Cats” you’ll meet when you walk through these doors. It is an honor to have him on my team, but most of all it is an honor to call him my friend.

Ryan Nicholas and Joe Bidlow Beale’s Beer, Bedford
These two!! Ryan Nicholas joined us after the unfortunate closing of Ballast Point in Daleville. Ryan came with tons of craft beer knowledge and outstanding customer service skills. He has weathered through this pandemic with us like a champ. From bartending and managing to kitchen and brewery shifts there is nothing he cannot do. Oh, AND he is a new dad! Joe Bidlow moved to Bedford in July of 2020 and joined us in August. We felt good about Joe from the minute we hired him. He too is a jack of all trades, assists wherever needed, and this kid can hustle! In his free time, Joe likes to head for the mountains with brews and camera in tow. Capturing what we like to call our “beers in the wild” marketing shots! Keep an eye on our social media to see where he will go next!

he Phoebus section of Hampton oozes charm. Cruise down Mellen Street at the intersection with Mallory and you get the feel of a classic small-town American main street. Theater? Check. The American Theater is a treasure. Local restaurants? Check. Several well-regarded locally-owned restaurants and bistros catering to a range of tastes are chock-ablock. Antiques and collectibles? Check. Bookstore, boutique, and bike shop? Check, check and check. Live local music shows in a cool Victorian House? Big Pink Music at Victorian Station is a few blocks down Mallory. Phoebus is so “apple-pie Americana” there is even a cidery, for goodness sakes! But, something is missing. Where can you find the soul of any vibrant American burg, city or town in 2021? Readers of Virginia Craft Beer Magazine know. The soul of any town, anywhere, can be found in its brewery! A brewery tasting room is a casual place to
meet people and sip a cool one, a place to chew the fat and sample the very soul of the community. And Phoebus, finally, will soon have a brewery to call its very own. Not only is 1865 Brewing Company the first Black-owned brewery in Hampton Roads, it is the first in Virginia and one of only about 60 in the United States. The name derives from the deep roots of African American history in Hampton and historic Fort Monroe, just over a mile down the street. The Thirteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution abolished slavery in 1865. The brewery name represents freedom, their motto is “Freedom Starts Here,” and one of their first brews will be Freedom IPA. Of course, the people make the place, so here is a bit of information about the founders of 1865. William “Billy” Comer is a successful Class A contractor who specializes in commercial and residential construction. A guy with a solid appreciation for IPAs, Billy is from

Chesapeake, and is converting the storefront into an industrialchic tasting room. Whitteney Guyton is an energetic entrepreneur and a health care CEO. She’s a homebrewer, hails from Chicago, and is a proud Norfolk State alumna. Behold the green (hops) and gold (golden ale) from a pint glass at 1865. While Billy and Whitteney met over business regarding an earlier project, their common interests soon had them brewing up a business plan to build 1865. They formed a business partnership that brings their complimentary skills to the table, building 1865 Brewing Company in a classic storefront building located at 9 South Mallory Street in the Phoebus section of Hampton, VA, just off the intersection with E. Mellen. So you’ve got two people who are building a brewery, but to bring beer to the table you need a brewer. Enter Randy Jones. Actually, he was already there. Randy and his wife Becca Jones, who some of us remember from the Taphouse Grill in Ghent, were partners in an earlier plan for a different brewery in the same building. It’s not like the brewer conveyed with the building, but when Whitteney and Billy took on the 1865 project, they were wise to tap Randy, who has a degree from the Siebel Institute and has brewed at Colorado’s Palisade Brewing Company and Black Sky Brewery. They all want 1865 Brewing to be a warm, welcoming location and community space where people new to the craft beer scene can relax, inhale an ale, and get a beer education without a lecture. African Americans are vastly underrepresented in the American craft beer culture in terms of ownership, employees, and customer base. Whitteney and Billy are part of the changing craft beer landscape and aim to be a place where everyone feels welcome when they walk in the door. Fewer than 1% of U.S. craft breweries are Black-owned, about 60 nationwide, and 89% of American craft brewers are White, according to a 2019 Brewers Association survey. Garrett Oliver of Brooklyn Brewing recently told the NY Times that in thirty years as Brewmaster at this major craft brewery, he did not have a single African American applicant for a brewing position. Considering that Garrett Oliver is American’s best known African American Brewmaster and the current brewery in Brooklyn, this is a strong sign that the craft beer industry thirsts for an infusion of inclusion! And, how about the craft beer consumer? According to the Brewers Association, about 85% of craft beer drinkers are White. That remaining 15% includes Black, Latino, Asian American, and Native American consumers. Clearly expanding the craft beer consumer base to those who have not traditionally felt that craft beer includes people like them will be a boon to all. Some say the craft beer market is “saturated” but there are communities of color that are as yet largely untapped by craft beer culture. Whitteney describes how it is not unusual for a group of Black patrons to get continued VIRGINIACRAFTBEER.COM

“the look” when they walk into a tasting room and get the sense that they are viewed as outsiders. They envision 1865’s tasting room as a place where everyone will be greeted in a friendly fashion and made to feel at home. Increasing diversity is a craft beer industry goal and change is happening, albeit slowly. Garrett Oliver recently founded the Michael James Jackson Foundation for Brewing and Distilling, a scholarship program for Black, Indigenous, and people of color in the industry. The Brewers Association hired a diversity ambassador in 2018, Dr. J. Nikol Jackson-Beckham, a professor at Lynchburg’s Randolph College. The Brewers Association also publishes a set of Diversity Best Practices that is a valuable resource for all breweries looking to diversify both staff and customer-base and promote an atmosphere of inclusion. Black Brew Culture, an online magazine and Facebook group, the Black Brew Movement, and beer journalist-blogger Ale Sharpton are but a few examples of the grassroots movement that is connecting African Americans with the craft beer subculture. Fresh Fest, a Pittsburgh-based beer festival promoting Black-owned breweries, is another example of the changing landscape of craft beer. Weathered Souls Brewing of San Antonio developed a recipe and label for Black is Beautiful stout, brewed in 2020 at craft breweries around the nation, to raise awareness of systemic racism. We tried five of the eight local versions, and all were outstanding. Proceeds went to social justice causes chosen by each brewery. Beer brings people together! When we visited 1856 Brewing Company in early January 2021, construction of the brewery was ongoing in earnest, and one had to use imagination to fully picture what the place will look like when the dust has settled. The brewery is a small, nimble threebarrel system with four fermenters and three brite tanks just off the 70-person capacity tasting room. There are plans to take advantage of the great outdoors by building a two-tier deck behind the building. Like most small breweries their opening date has been pushed back a few times due to both logistical issues and the COVID-19 pandemic, so while they would like to open by the end of January, it may take longer. Once they do open to the public, they will have the capacity to serve six beers on tap, eventually expanding the beer list to 12 offerings.Yes, Virginia, they will have an IPA, a stout, and a golden ale which we tasted during out visit (it was delicious). They plan to brew what customers want and to listen to customer feedback. Inspired by the Emancipation Oak located just down the street at Hampton University, there may be an oak-aged firkin in 1865’s future. Of course, any such oak would be from a different tree, sustainably and inspirationally harvested from the ground after a storm. The tasting room at 1865 will also serve seltzers, both hard and alcohol-free versions, with some loaded with fresh fruit. Juices and alcohol-free offerings will be part of their inclusive outlook. Happily, 1865 will offer flights as well as full sized pours. Plans include baked goods from a nearby bistro, food trucks, and music. Easy and convenient free parking can be found in the city lot behind the building. Like them on Facebook, and keep an eye on the Virginia Craft Beer Magazine Facebook page so you can be apprised of their opening date! Cheers! - 22 -

Heavenly Brew at Long Way By Jeff Maisey
A
nyone hoping for a second craft brewery to open in the tiny college town of Radford literally had their prayers answered late last year when Long Way Brewing opened in a former church. After considering several properties in an effort to revitalize the west end of the city, business partners Janet and Rob Gropman, Keith Weltens and Jeff Kleppin came across an abandoned stone building that last operated as the Seventh Day Adventist Church.
According to Kleppin, a place of worship wasn’t exactly what they had in mind to convert into a brewery. But as some believe, “the Lord works in mysterious ways.” Though the exterior looks more than 100 years old, it was actually constructed in the 1950s to look rustic and appropriate for a Southwestern Virginia river town. Inside, however, for those who give thanks to the Almighty Above for great beer, a wonder to behold awaits. The tasting room maintains the original
stained glass windows with one additional colored glass window to allow for more light. Wooden church pews were shortened and converted into booth seating. Where the alter was once positioned at the head of the church, patrons line up to order a beer at the taproom bar. “Preserving the feel of the room was certainly a priority for us,” said Kleppin. “It makes us just one of 20 or so breweries in the country that are in former churches. We’re happy to be in that small company.”

FEBRUARY 2021
When it came to naming the brewery the ownership team thought long and hard about a long list they had brainstormed on. Rather than a Biblical name, they selected a different slice of local history in calling it Long Way Brewing. For those classic rockers out there, it isn’t related to the Supertramp tune “Take the Long Way Home.” The brewery is named in for long-ago resident Mary Draper Ingles who, in 1755, was taken prisoner by the Shawnee tribe to what is modern day Ohio. It is said she escaped and took “the long way” home — some 600 miles — by following the New River back to her family homestead. A statue in her honor stands in a park near the river. Mary Ingles might be proud not only for being remembered through the brewery name but also because a woman — Kim Pensinger — was named head brewer. As it turns out, the brewery ownership didn’t have to look far for a skilled beer maker. Kim Pensinger lives a few houses away from the brewery with her husband Mike Pensinger, the award-winning head brewer at Parkway Brewing Company in Salem. “We didn’t have a brewer in mind when we started the whole thing,” said Kleppin. “The more we talked with Kim and she really wanted to get into it; she lives with a brewer; she’s been homebrewing. She makes sense for us. She’s got a knack and we are really pleased so far.” While the draft list will rotate like the hands around a clock, some of the early favorites with local customers who stream-in from the surrounding neighborhood are Steppin’ Up Blonde Ale, Forecast: Overcast Hazy IPA, Ingles Trail Pale Ale, Mary Mary Why You Buggin’ (an English Brown ale named for Mary Ingles), Whole Latte Love (coffee stout), Gose Together Cranberry Orange, and Cluster Luck IPA. Jeff Kleppin said Pensinger has free rein to be creative with the beer she brews, and that’ll be put to the test sometime in February when she plans to make a Koyt. Koyt was a popular beer style in Medieval Holland from the years 1400 to 1550. It is said to be a true bready brew derived from 45 percent or more oat malt with a minimum of 20 wheat malt and the remainder coming from pale malt. Jopen Brewery in Haarlem, The Netherlands, is ironically located in a former — and much larger — church. Jopen brewed and bottled a historical Koyt with Gruit (a herb mixture pre-dating the use of hops for bitterness) that came from a recipe dating back to 1407. It’ll be interesting to see how Kim Pensinger’s version turns out. Speaking of bread, the two-level church building allowed the owners to do something special. Where the brewhouse and tasting room occupy the second floor, the ground level houses a non-profit called the Radford Fairlawn Daily Bread. The organization had been looking for an upgrade in its mission to provide free meals to those in need. Keith Weltens, who helped as a volunteer from time to time, got the blessings from his partners to offer them the first floor. “If we could have an opportunity to give back to the community then we wanted to do that,” Kleppin said. As the verse John 6:35 states, quoting Jesus, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.” Sounds like Long Way Brewing is the place to be. privileges of your virginia brewerypart 1 of 2 by Kevin N. Anderson, Regulatory Consultant
Have you ever wondered why Virginia breweries are allowed to do certain things and not others? The Virginia Alcoholic Beverage Control Authority released the following guidance as a reminder of what the privileges of a Virginia brewery are. The privileges of a Virginia ABC licensed brewery licensee are:
4. Items Can be given away on the licensed brewery premise. 5. Items may be given to the public only on non-retail licensed premises, except for items given to patrons of a retail establishment participating in a bona fide brewery tasting event held on the licensed premises.
1. The manufacture and sale of beer/ malt-beverage to wholesale beer licensees. This includes bottles, cans, and/or kegs. 2. The sale of beer to persons outside Virginia for resale outside Virginia.
Breweries may obtain a Manufacturer Beer/Wine Event license:
3. The sale at retail of the brands of beer owned by the brewery at the licensed premises for on and off premises consumption. All beer sold for off premises consumption must be in sealed containers, which may include growlers. 4. The giving of samples of the brands of beer owned by the brewery to visitors of the brewery for consumption on the licensed premises, provided the samples are given only to persons lawfully able to consume them. 5. The sale of beer in kegs to individuals, if the brewery obtains a keg permit. 6. The delivery of beer owned by the brewery to individuals for their personal consumption, if the brewery obtains a delivery permit. Breweries may lend, buy for, or give to a retail licensee: 1. Brand identified advertising materials made of paper, cardboard, canvas, rubber, foam, or plastic, provided that the materials have a
1. For the purpose of featuring and educating the public on malt beverages. 2. May sell or give beer for on premises consumption at the event. wholesale value of $40.00 or less per item. Items cannot be illuminated. 2. Draft beer knobs containing the brand name. Draft beer knobs may not be illuminated or contain mechanical devices that are not necessary for the dispensing of draft beer. Breweries may give away brand identified novelty items: 1. Items cannot exceed $10.00 in wholesale value. 2. Can be given to employees of retail licensed establishments, limited to one item per employee that is present, per visit.
3. Cannot sell any beer for off premises consumption. 4. Limited to eight licenses per calendar year. 5. May be a co-holder of this license with one or more other breweries. 6. Events may be held in most locations, other than on the premises of a retail licensee. Clear enough? What can make these regulations even more complicated is they can change every year if the legislature updates the laws or if Virginia ABC has released new guidance documents.
3. Employees may wear or display these items on the licensed premises.
