Here is what happens to your vascular system as you lose weight: •

Blood vessels: Losing weight reduces your heart’s workload. Blood vessels supply the heart with the blood it needs to keep pumping. s we approach the spring, it will be time to start thinking about what most people call “Spring Cleaning”. I want you to consider this as you would do cleaning out your closets, garages, storage bins, and have a policy review of your insurance. As the seasons of your life changes, so do your insurance needs. Do you have enough or the right coverage? The purpose of insurance is to protect what you have by insuring it properly, whether it’s your vehicles, your place of residence, or other assets. The key is “to not over insure but insure properly”. How do you do this you may wonder? With a Personal Umbrella Policy also known as a PUP policy. This is an “Excess” liability policy that overlays the limits that you have on your Auto, Home, Boat, etc. It is an extension of your liability limits on those policies beyond what is stated on your declaration pages so that in the event that you get sued, you will have protection without out of pocket expense to you. Without it there is a huge gap in your protection. You will probably fit into one of the following categories that would warrant a discussion with your insurance agent or provider. Singles, couples, family with teen drivers, or elderly parents should review the limits to protect yourself and your assets properly. You may think to yourself, I don’t have many assets, I don’t have anything much, so it doesn’t matter what kind of coverage I have on my auto policy. I can assure you this is a wrong assumption no one should not make. Having the correct liability limits on your automobile policy is crucial to protecting your

Do I Really Need A Will? By Dawn M. Dale, Esq. am often asked, “Do I really need a Will?” The answer is a resounding, “Yes, but what you really need is an Estate Plan!”
In the last two issues of the Virginia Woman Magazine, I reviewed the Estate Planning Process and provided a summary of the legal documents included in a foundational estate plan and list of action items to be completed as part of the planning process. It isn’t just about having a Will. Many people believe they don’t need a Will because they are single, they don’t have a large estate or “my spouse will inherit everything anyway.” Not taking the time to work through the estate planning process and execute the necessary documents typically leads to more complexity and expense for you and your loved ones and unintended consequences. So, why should you have an Estate Plan (The following is based on Virginia Law): Incapacity: YOU designate an agent(s) of your choosing to make your personal, medical and/or financial decisions in the event you are not able to do yourself and you control which decisions they are permitted to make. For example, do you want your agent to be able to change the beneficiary on your retirement account or life insurance, make gifts of your assets or terminate life support if you have a terminal condition? Without the necessary legal documents in place, if you become incapacitated, your family will need to seek the appointment of a Guardian to manage your personal and medical affairs and a Conservator to manage your estate and financial affairs. This requires that a Court declare that you are legally incapacitated. This process is a matter of public record and may result in your losing valuable legal rights. It also results in increased costs associated with the court proceedings and ongoing supervision of your agents.

Who will inherit your assets and the terms and timing of the inheritance,

Who will be responsible for managing your estate,

The extent to which your estate is subject to the probate process, and

How to implement strategies that can minimize taxes, provide creditor protection and financial management.
Without a plan in place, state and contract law and the courts will make these important decisions for you. Some assets may pass to a joint owner or named beneficiary. The rest will pass under state law. This can result in people inheriting the wrong amounts, inheriting at the wrong time or even the wrong people inheriting your assets. If you have minor children, it could give rise to court appointed Guardians for the child and Guardians for the child’s estate. It often increases the costs of estate administration and creates delays in the timing when your heirs will have access to their inheritance. Estate plans should be designed to address your situation. They do not need to be complex and expensive if you have a simple situation. Women’s History Month: The Suffragists By Patricia Depew Wirth
m I the only one who thinks it’s absurd that in America we need to have a month devoted to women’s history because male historians and authors neglected to acknowledge and write about women and their incredible accomplishments for decades and decades? I find it equally disturbing that every year I learn about more and more women of whom I have never heard! Unfortunately, this is what happened to the thousands of women who fought for 72 years to win the vote and citizenship for the American woman. Susan B. Anthony is the sole suffragist widely known and she died more than a decade prior to ratification of the 19th Amendment. Did you know that, according to the Smithsonian, there are approximately 5,200 memorials in our country and less than 8% are of women? The Turning Point Suffragist Memorial Association intends to ratchet up that 8% by building a memorial to commemorate the thousands and thousands of female foot soldiers who participated in the Suffragist Movement from 1848 to 1920. Without their tenacity and dedication to improving the lives of American women by gaining suffrage, our country’s landscape in areas such as government, business, science, medicine, military, education and all other area of employment would look significantly different. May I introduce you to some suffragists you may not know? Elizabeth Cady Stanton (1815–1902) was a prominent 19th century suffragist and civil rights activist who became involved in the abolitionist movement after a progressive upbringing. She helped organize the world’s first women’s rights convention in 1848 in Seneca Falls, NY, where she wrote the Declaration of Sentiments. She together with Susan B. Anthony established the National Woman Suffrage Association. With her advocacy of liberal divorce laws and reproductive self-determination, Cady Stanton became an increasingly marginalized voice among women reformers late in life. However, her efforts helped bring about the eventual passage of the 19th Amendment, which gave all citizens the right to vote. Lucy Stone (1818 – 1893) was a prominent American orator, abolitionist, and suffragist, and a vocal advocate and organizer promoting rights for women. In 1847, Stone became the first woman from Massachusetts to earn a college degree. She spoke out for women’s rights and against slavery at a time when women were discouraged and prevented from public speaking. Stone was known for using her maiden name after marriage rejecting the custom to take one’s husband’s surname. Alice Paul (1885 –1977) was, arguably, the most influential individual in the fight for women’s rights of the 20th century. A Quaker, she studied biology at Swarthmore College, earned an MA in sociology at the University of Pennsylvania, then studied social work in England. While there she joined Emmeline Pankhurst’s militant suffragist movement and was arrested and jailed several times. She returned to America armed with tactics to re-energize the suffrage movement here. In 1916 she and Lucy Burns formed the National Woman’s Party (NWP). They organized the Silent Sentinels who quietly picketed the White House for suffrage. They were arrested and jailed; those held in the Occoquan Workhouse endured

humiliation, beatings, solitary confinement, forced feedings and inhumane prison conditions. When word leaked out about this barbaric treatment, it became a significant turning point in getting President Wilson to urge Congress to pass the 19th Amendment. Mary Eliza Church Terrell (1863-1954) organized a strategy for AfricanAmerican women to become full citizens of the United States. Terrell lectured throughout the country on the importance of the vote for black women. She deemed the vote essential for the elevation of black women and consequently the entire black race. Terrell saw education as essential in obtaining racial uplift and respectability. As president of the National Association of Colored Women, Terrell campaigned tirelessly among black organizations and mainstream white organizations for black women’s suffrage. She even picketed the Wilson White House with members of the National Woman’s Party in her zeal for woman suffrage. Lucy Burns (1879 –1966) was a versatile and pivotal figure within the NWP. Born in Brooklyn, New York, to an Irish Catholic family, Burns was a brilliant student of language and linguistics. She studied at Vassar College and Yale University in the US and at the University of Berlin in Germany (1906-8). While a student at Oxford College in Cambridge, England, Burns met Alice Paul in a London police station after both were arrested during a suffrage demonstration outside Parliament. Their alliance was powerful and long-lasting. Carrie Chapman Catt (1859-1947) is one of the key leaders of the suffrage movement. She succeeded Susan B. Anthony as president of the National American Woman Suffrage Association (NAWSA) from 1900 to 1904. She again assumed its presidency in 1915. NAWSA had grown large and powerful with more than two million members in 44 states. When Catt assumed the presidency of NAWSA again in 1915, she changed their strategy of gaining voting rights state-by-state to pursuing a federal amendment. Ida B. Wells-Barnett (1862-1931) challenged racial and sexual discrimination through the power of the pen. She settled in Chicago where she met her husband, exposed lynching records, wrote a pamphlet about the exclusion of blacks from meaningful roles at the Worlds Columbian Exposition, started woman’s clubs, founded the Negro Fellowship League, and involved herself in suffrage. She marched in several national suffrage parades, lectured, and founded the first black woman suffrage organization – the Alpha Suffrage Club of Chicago. Wells-Barnett used her gift of language to challenge discrimination and sexism throughout the United States, revealing injustices and fighting for equality and fairness.

Knowing when it is time to retire shoes is important to maintaining happy healthy feet. Shoes don’t last forever. Wearing shoes past their lifespan is not good for your feet.
The “break in your shoes” rule - let it go!
Check your shoes regularly? Make sure your shoes are giving you the support you need for comfort. And if they appear to cause you pain or not enough support, do not pass go, instead go straight to your favorite shoe haven and buy....happy feet are worth every new pair!
You do not have to break in your shoes. Purchasing comfortable shoes right out of the box is the only way to buy shoes. Assuming your shoes have to be broken is not the answer for buying shoes that do. It fit well when you buy them. Poorly fitting shoes can lead to corns, calluses and other problems. Happy fit makes for happy feet. Buy shoes that fit and enjoy the lifespan of your favorites with no “ break in” time.

Bleeding... Fibroids... Pain... Oh My By Dr. Gloria Ivey-Crowe
o you suffer every month from feelings of bloating, bleeding like a pig, or pain that just will not quit and doesn’t respond to the handful of Advil, Aleve, Tylenol or even Percocet that you keep popping? What’s a girl to do?
Pain, bloating and heavy bleeding are a few symptoms which can drive us to our knees and cause a lot of dread for our monthly cycles. Your monthly cycle is God’s constant reminder that we are here to procreate. Indeed, bleeding disorders of excess or lack are huge contributors to infertility. These symptoms can be controlled with the use of hormones, ablative procedures which can destroy the source of the bleeding, insertion of intrauterine devices (IUD) such as a MIRENA or SKYLA, or continuous oral contraceptives. 90% of the time, women have multiple options to help with the dreaded monthly bouts of heavy bleeding or pain. But for 10% of women, nothing seems to take the piercing pain away or there’s no pad big enough to absorb all the disgustingly large clots they pass each month. Yet, there is an even smaller group of women who find nothing abnormal about these monthly occurrences and go about their business as usual. For the woman who has sought the advice of many of her peers, the solace from a hot water bottle or heating pad, eating MIDOL or NSAIDS (Advil, Aleve, or Motrin) like Easter candy, what are our options? The first option is to have a candid talk with your healthcare provider to get honest and educated answers about what you can do Those options may include conservative measures such as continued use of hormones while minimizing use of NSAIDs or definitive therapy with surgery. Again, surgical options may include destruction of the uterine lining with endometrial ablation or NOVASURE. Each of these options has a small risk of failure and complications as well. What’s a girl to do when she has bled so heavily every month, that now she is severely anemic from the loss of large amounts of blood from heavy periods and has to take iron supplements or receive iron transfusions. She has already tried the conservative options; they have failed, and she just can’t physically function any more. For those that are not faint

of heart the surgery option is a more definitive option. Are you really ready to go that far? For many, that’s a resounding YES. So what does surgery entail? The surgical option for bleeding, pain or even fibroids is the removal of the uterus: the dreaded Hysterectomy. There are various types of hysterectomies: full or complete. A full hysterectomy would be the removal of the uterus, cervix, tubes and ovaries. A partial hysterectomy would be the removal of the uterus with possible leaving of the cervix, tubes or ovaries. There are pros and cons for each. The way in which the surgery is performed may be through the vagina,laparoscopic with the use of cameras, roboticwith the use of a robot or abdominallythrough a large incision in the skin of the abdomen. But, what are you not telling me? What can go wrong? A part of any discussion should include information regarding the possible complications: injury to surrounding organs and structures such as the bladder or a portion of the gastrointestinal tract such as the bowel, or excessive bleeding from injury to surrounding vessels, or even a risk of getting an infection. But, what about your sex life? Yes, there is life after a hysterectomy. For many women it is the best time of their lives with no fear of pregnancy, pain gone and intercourse is more enjoyable. Unless the ovaries are removed, which would affect a woman’s hormone levels, her desire or libido should be intact. The vagina still remains elastic and although some think of the vagina as a never ending tunnel, it does have a discrete length. How about “things” that start to fall down? This is referred to as prolapse. For a small few, there will be pelvic relaxation with an accompanying feeling as if your insides are coming down and out. These anatomical concerns can be discussed prior to surgery and appropriate surgical techniques done at the time of surgery to prevent this possible complication.It’s a good choice with a lot of benefits. Recovery will vary depending upon the type of surgery performed. So, hey, stop suffering, call your healthcare provider for a consultation to find out what you can do to get rid of all that bleeding, aches and pains that you dread every month and as I so often tell my patients who do either conservative or definitive therapy: NOW YOU CAN WEAR SOME WHITE PANTS again.

our most vibrant self is always accessible to you; it is a matter of improving the quality of your life to allow that vibrant self to grow. It is so easy to get caught up in the struggles of everyday life and become overwhelmed with daily demands. These ruts can pull us down, without our even realizing it. We tend to take on too much, give what we don’t have, and stop filling up our own cups. Over time, these habits become ingrained and it is more and more difficult to live with intention, to elevate ourselves and embody our most vibrant selves. So, take advantage of this moment, right here, right now! Ask yourself, How vibrant and healthalicious do you want to be? Do you dream of being?
Each day I try to encourage myself by including something I haven’t done before; right now it is working on bringing more yoga and physical activity into my routine. I know the benefits of regular practice and do feel good whenever I go, but often busy schedules get in the way and I don’t make it to class. My goal is to make becoming my most vibrant self a priority, even when it feels inconvenient or scary. My favorite additions are hiking and canoeing. These new activities have added such special times with my husband Nevin. We create what we call our adventures. This grandma from NYC is totally loving the outdoors! Sometimes we even take our grandchildren canoeing with us.
It is never too late to start again, to invite in your most vibrant self and realize who you are meant to be. It takes courage, and a dedication to yourself that is not always easy to find. As I learned while fighting for my life, to beat Stage IV Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, without traditional protocols, you must be relentless in pursuit of your own health and wellbeing, because no one else will be. We each have a responsibility to ourselves to take action, set goals and surround ourselves with people and environments that protect and inspire us.

“You never know until you try” Before I was diagnosed a second time with cancer, I knew nothing about the power of alkaline water, green juice and an alkaline whole foods lifestyle. Was it scary and intimidating to embark on this new way of life? Of course! Was I afraid it wouldn’t work and that I would hate it? Education Starts At The Student’s Eye Level

he U.S. Department of Education is researching and highly regarding a fundamental pillar that many secondary education centers already build their practices on – education starts with seeing things from a student’s eye level. In order to achieve goals in the classroom, instructors must properly understand a student’s learning style and perspective in order to provide an effective, innovative and customizable curriculum in a comfortable learning environment. To fully understand this principle and further aid students, back in September of 2012, the U.S. Department of Education announced that it will award $52 million dollars in grants to nationwide centers for the preschool through 12th grade. The objective is to help districts and schools meet student achievements and goals through research-based findings. These cases will include investigating study habits and visual, auditory and tactile learning styles. Similar methods for students, of all ages, are being researched through U.S. government grants to fund the advancement of innovative and comprehensive education, from individual regional centers to the Investing in Innovation (i3) Development grant. As stated in October 2012 on the U.S Department of Education website about the challenges and steps ahead. “Today, we are asking much more of ourselves and much more of each other – and everyone is stepping up – parents, teachers, administrators, community leaders and of course students” said the US Secretary of Education, Mr. Duncan. “Eye Level is dedicated to creating sound individuals, sound families and a sound society through a philosophy of humancentered management. This humanistic philosophy drives the company as we create new programs and services that best meet the needs of students worldwide”, said Kang. While much of the research must be completed and analyzed, the US government and supplemental learning organizations are committed to adapting education in hopes to increase student success, indifferent of the learning style.

he top three things colleges and potential employers look for in recent high school graduates are: reliability, honesty and flexibility. In life, character is key. Colleges and employers want to recruit people who have a strong sense of values and integrity. Responsible people are willing to be held accountable for their actions. They take pride in their work. They are honest, dependable and punctual; they meet deadlines and complete work thoroughly. To build yourself, improve your level of responsibility by getting organized. Keep a daily planner; write important information down. When making decisions, think about the long-term effect. Everything about life is NOT “microwaveable,” despite our “instagram, get it done in a nano second” world. Some things take time; a slow bake is often required for long-term gain. Remember that flexible people go with the flow and quickly recover from setbacks. Deadlines change, technology rapidly gets upgraded and old systems are replaced with new ones. Colleges and employers look for people who can easily adapt to change. If you need to improve in this area try to tackle a new project or change up your normal routine. When something unexpected or new surfaces, remind yourself that you’ve succeeded in the past and you have the skills to succeed once again. Sometime fear of change is really a fear of failure. Get out and challenge yourself, build your self-esteem and take on the world!
Team players are respectful of opinions that differ from their own and want what is best for the team. To improve this skill, when working in groups, practice seeing everyone in the group as an important member of the team. No one is better than another and each brings their own skills to the table. Agree to disagree. Use a difference of opinion as an opportunity to compromise. Colleges and employers are looking for people who consider themselves to be life-long learners; people who are willing and eager to learn new things. Teachable people take criticism well, and use it as a way to improve. They are constantly evolving and changing to be the best person they can be. To improve your skill in this area, take a step back when someone points out a flaw to you. Listen calmly to what they have to say and turn it into an opportunity to improve.
Leaders motivate people. They make decisions and stand by them. Leaders support the people they work with and most important LEADERS LISTEN to the needs of others. Good leaders plan. Great leader plan well in advance, are flexible and open minded. Once you determine the end goal, motivation to achieve that goal usually follows. 7 Most Frequently Asked College Questions By Luanne Lee, CCPRS, Your College Planning Coach 1. At our school’s Financial Aid Night we were told ALL we have to pay for college is our EFC. Is that true? Short answer… NO! This is one of THE most misunderstood misconceptions (and myths) regarding EFC (Expected Family Contribution). Most schools do NOT limit your out-of-pocket costs to EFC, and many public colleges offer families NO financial aid other than government loans even when their EFC is quite low. You should learn your EFC (Expected Family Contribution) early…as in no later than your student’s first year of high school! 2. I heard it is a waste of time filing the FAFSA if you make more than $100K. True or False? This is such a common misconception and is absolutely… FALSE! Some families earning well beyond $100K qualify for significant need-based financial aid! School selection plays a major part in this. 3. Is it true that there’s lots of financial aid for every student? No, this is NOT accurate. Beware when colleges (and Uncle Sam) tell you there’s PLENTY of financial aid for every student. What they’re OFTEN referring to is LOANS. Always reply with the clarifying question,“How much of the financial aid you’re referring to is FREE money and how much of it is LOANS?” 4. What about Athletic Scholarships? Athletic scholarships are highly misunderstood. First of all, only a small number of exceptionally talented high school athletes have even a CHANCE of being recruited into a Division 1 college. And for those fortunate ones who are, the vast majority will find only a partial scholarship being offered to them. Most often it doesn’t come even close to paying for tuition… not to mention room & board, books, and living expenses. Many families are disappointed when they learn of the limited funds their student athlete will receive… after a tremendous investment of time and money for their “ticket to college”!
5. My student has a 4.0 GPA. Won’t they get a full ride? The term “full-ride scholarship” is used loosely these days, and the reality is… there are very few true “full-rides”, meaning “free college”. Some colleges use the term full-ride to imply free tuition, but NOT inclusive of room & board, books, living expenses, etc. 6. I heard if we stop claiming our child as an exemption on our taxes, they will qualify for more financial aid. True? No. Until your son/daughter turns 24 (or gets married or has a baby or enters the military), they are considered a DEPENDENT student in the eyes of the government and the colleges. Parent income and assets must be declared on the financial aid forms. 7. What’s the difference between Early Action and Early Decision? There’s one BIG difference… Early Action is NON-committal, while Early Decision IS. You can apply Early Action and in the event that you’re accepted (typically by late December), you don’t need to commit until May 1st. However, if you apply Early Decision and you’re accepted, you agree to attend as well as accept the financial aid award offered. Unless money is no object you should never accept Early Decision. It’s that time of the year AGAIN! y mommy loves me, but she also loves all animals. She believes all animals should have a good life, even if they are raised for food. And those wonderful loving farmers, who raise their animals with care, proper habitat, quality feed and no hormones or antibiotics, should have our support as animal lovers. Most of my dog-friends say their human parents love them ridiculous amounts, would do anything for them. They sound like compassionate people. So you would think, they would never directly pay people to abuse animals and fund a food-animal’s suffering. Maybe they don’t know what it is really like for those piggies and cowzies.

Factory farming is the norm in this country. These animals, seen only as property and profit are made to live horrible lives and frequently mistreated. With supermarket-bought, bigbrand meats, the animals have to be fed antibiotics daily so they don’t get sick living in those conditions. The factory owners also feed them hormones to make them grown beyond what their legs will bear. Chemicals have to be added after the animal is slaughtered to clean the meat to prevent us from getting sick from contamination. Take it from a dog... Only feed us happy food and treats! hether you love to follow the styles or not, spring is a big time of year in the fashion world. The runway is hot with top models showing off outlandish fashion that most of us would never dream of wearing. So why do we care, or why should we? Poetry

dith Wharton published The House of Mirth in 1905; a novel that revealed women’s potential aside from being decorative objects owned by men. Gerturde Stein’s unparalleled poetry in Tender Buttons (1914) served as a frontrunner for progression and freedom from the patriarchal grip. Maya Angelou, author of I know Why the Caged Bird Sings (1969), was an esteemed representative of women everywhere and a believer of self-expression and equality. However, paving the way for all of these idolized women was Emily Dickinson: a woman who strove for the improvement of the individual though modernist ideals. Her poetry was not only innovative and thought provoking, but also unafraid to expose controversial subjects during the time. Dickinson was a reclusive, closeted writer who trusted only her closest friends with her gift. Despite only publishing a handful of her poems during her lifetime, her words have transcended through time, remaining a symbol of spirituality and individuality. Dickinson, even from the solitary confines of her bedroom, used her poetry as a gateway for empowerment. Although she was reserved in her nature, Dickinson’s later published works acted as an advocate for the expression of individual thought, especially individual thought within women. Emily Dickinson was born in 1830 in Amherst, MA; a Calvinist community of New England. During this time, New England upbringing emphasized group mentality and discouraged individual thought. Emily, hailing from a long line of Puritans, used their ideals satirically within her poetry, representing the difficulty of authenticity within such a suppressed setting. Dickinson used poetry as a means of understanding where she came from and a way of discovering her own identity. The major themes that coerce through her poems revolve around faith in the universe, death,

truth, and freedom – all entities which lead to an awakened stance of self-consciousness. The beginning of the Modernist era, where self-consciousness was the cardinal characteristic, can be traced to the end of the 19th century. Dickinson’s death, caused by kidney disease, occurred on May 15, 1886, right on the cusp of this movement. Although she wasn’t a leader of Modernism, one can argue that Dickinson’s forward way of thinking aided in the momentum of this crusade. Through poetry that defied religious dogma, Dickinson showed it was possible to break free of conformity and lead a more experience-driven life. In a place where religion determined the majority of values and lifestyles, her poetry offered an escape for women readers who were unaware that they were even imprisoned. Dickinson’s poetry acted as an awakening for an individual to become closer and more intimate with themselves and the earth. She demonstrated how a spiritually aware existence resulted in a reward that was greater than the ambiguous promises of religious doctrine; that knowledge, in itself, is a monumental reward. Even today, Emily Dickinson is a household name. Her poetry is widely taught, widely read, and even more widely received. In addition to the countless edited editions of her works there live biographies, literary criticisms, studies, courses, and even children’s books all devoted to Emily. In 1963, the Dickinson house became a National Historic Landmark and is open to the public for tours as an opportunity to glimpse inside the walls in which history took place. Just down the road from the homestead is the cemetery where the Dickinson family lies at rest in a private plot. Emily’s grave is frequently visited by avid readers, aspiring writers, and tourists alike. The area by her headstone can be seen strewn with pens, pencils, trinkets, and illustrate her continued legacy of empowered female thinkers.
