ermal filler treatments can provide extraordinary results for facial and hand rejuvenation. They are one of the most frequently requested procedures at the Aesthetic Medical Center. The treatments are done in our office. Results are seen immediately and there is virtually no downtime for the patient. To ensure that our patients receive gentle, personalized treatments, Dr. Dennis Faludi uses advanced dermal filler techniques and products; each treatment is customized to meet the needs of the individual patient. Everything that we do is based on our belief that the patient is special and a family member of the Aesthetic Medical Center team.

Advanced Dermal Filler Techniques for Gentle Treatment and

Natural-Looking Results

“We perform nonsurgical facial and hand sculpting by restoring volume with dermal fillers,” Dr. Faludi explains. “You can create lift and volume to achieve a more youthful appearance. “Botox and dermal fillers are not the same thing,” he continues. “Botox works by neutralizing the muscles that cause wrinkles, whereas dermal fillers are volume replacers that help to restore and augment the soft tissues that support the face and hands.”

There are three major categories of dermal fillers: Temporary Semi-permanent Permanent

Dr. Faludi has decades of experience in reconstructive and microsurgery, with additional training in advanced facial aesthetic procedures. His expertise in the delicate techniques required for working with small vessels, nerves, soft tissue, and bone flow naturally into Aesthetic Medicine. Dr. Faludi now uses his surgical skills to perform minimally invasive cosmetic treatments, including Botox and other injectable neuromodulators, dermal fillers, and laser therapy for a variety of skin and vascular conditions over the face, hands, and body. The Aesthetic Medical Center was established by D. Dennis Faludi, M.D. as a medical practice devoted to providing the highest quality in minimally invasive cosmetic treatments for men and women in the Washington, D.C. metro area.

Temporary fillers, such as Juvéderm®, Restylane®, and Belotero®, generally last from six months to two years. They are made of hyaluronic acid, a chemical that is naturally found throughout the body. Semi-permanent fillers, such as Radiesse® and Sculptra®, include substances that actively stimulate collagen formation. Their effects can last up to 18 months and longer. Permanent fillers, such as Bellafill®, provide the most long-acting results. “What we use depends on the patient’s desired goals, the treatment areas, and the characteristics of the filler,” Dr. Faludi explains.

Many practices offer dermal filler treatments, but there are significant differences in the techniques used for these procedures. When sharp-pointed needles are used, they often puncture blood vessels and nerves, causing pain and unsightly bruising.

The more advanced technique, the microcannula, is what Dr. Faludi uses for most dermal filler procedures The microcannula has a slender, blunt tip that gently pushes aside nerves and vessels instead of penetrating them, and it has side openings from which the dermal filler flows. This technique allows for great precision and results in a minimally invasive procedure with little to no bruising. This technique also provides more natural-looking results because it can usually be accomplished through one entry point, and it allows Dr. Faludi to follow the natural architecture of the face as he injects the filler. With decades of experience as a reconstructive and microsurgeon, Dr. Faludi is accustomed to working with delicate instruments through multiple layers of tissue. “People tend to want different cosmetic effects at different ages, but everyone wants to look the best they can for their age,” he explains. “Older men and women are more interested in rejuvenation and restoration, while younger patients are generally more interested in enhancement.” Dr. Faludi takes all new patients through a thorough complimentary consultation to discuss their aesthetic goals and design individual treatment plans. Additionally, he personally performs all injectable and laser procedures at the Aesthetic Medical Center in Northern Virginia. July/August 2016 | VIRGINIA WOMAN MAGAZINE

Stop Suffering From PMS & Menopause Symptoms By Linda E. Coleman, MD

“What Every Woman Needs to Know about SottoPelle® Therapy” What are bio-identical hormones? Bio-identical hormones are plant-based compounds specifically formulated to match the molecular structure of human hormones. Synthetics, however, are engineered not to match in order to be patented.

whenever the body needs it. A woman’s body can then control the release of the hormone just as it did when the ovaries were working normally. Repeat treatments involve a brief visit to a SottoPelle® office a few times per year. That’s it!

The pellets are compounded according to the highest industry standards using the best quality botanical ingredients available. They are derived from a natural plant source of soy and other plant-based ingredients. No horse urine. No fillers - just pure, natural, biologically identical hormones – plain and simple.

SottoPelle® Therapy – preferred by thousands Thousands of women across the U.S. and internationally prefer using the SottoPelle® Therapy method to achieve a natural, healthy balance of hormones. Our patients report that they feel fabulous again! Some of the many benefits they report include*:

Not all hormone replacement therapies are created equal SottoPelle® Therapy is a unique hormone replacement method that delivers the right kind of hormone (biologically identical), in the right amounts (based on testing and proper analysis of the results), using the right delivery system (pellets).

Enhanced libido and/or increased sexual desire

Decrease body fat and greater capacity to get in shape

Reduced fatigue & increased energy levels

Increased mental focus, clarity and concentration

If you’ve tried other methods of hormone replacement, you probably experienced the emotional ups and downs they can produce. Why? Because your hormones were still unbalanced, something that SottoPelle® Therapy can address. Ask any of our patients. They can’t believe the difference SottoPelle® makes – from increased energy and vitality to a renewed sense of emotional and physical well-being. And there’s more good news… pellets can last from three to six months or longer!

Improved memory

Consistency in moods – reduction in feelings of anger, nervousness and irritability

Relief from anxiety and depression

Increased sense of overall well-being

Protection from heart disease

How do I get started? It’s easy. First schedule an appointment with our staff. They will go over our procedures and policies for having a consultation and your insertion. On the day of your appointment, the doctor will discuss the results of your blood tests with you and prescribe the right amount of hormone for your unique needs. It is that simple. What is the procedure like? The small hormone pellets are slipped painlessly under the skin, typically in the hip. A mild, local anesthetic is used and the procedure takes less than five minutes. Once the pellets are inserted, a steady, low dose of natural hormone flows directly into the blood stream

*If you plan on becoming pregnant, please let someone in our office know

Testimonials: "The pellets will change your life- more energy and my sex life is amazing again. What Women Should know about Cervical Cancer One of the best and proven steps that you can take to prevent cervical cancer is to get regular testing for cancer. Changes in the cervix are often caused by a virus called human papilloma (pap-ah-LO-mah) virus (HPV). HPV infections can lead to cervical cancer. • The Pap test looks for changes in the cervix that might lead to cancer. • If cancer does occur, the Pap test can find it early, when it’s small and easier to treat. • Your doctor or nurse can tell you how often you should have a Pap test.

What Is Cervical Cancer

Cervical Cancer starts in the cells of the cervix, the part of the womb (or uterus) that opens to the vagina.

Optimum Health At Every Age By Dr. Gloria Ivey-Crowe

he health system has changed considerably over the past two years. The Affordable Care Act (ACA) has allowed more people to obtain health insurance, albeit at the expense of higher deductibles. I dare to say most people may frown when hearing about the Affordable Care Act, but there have been some small perks for most insured patients; no copay for annual visits, free contraception, and most importantly, an affordable plan and increased access to health care. This change has impacted all medical practices that do not provide concierge services or have a large percentage of insured patients, leading into a large revenue loss for many practices. A Second Chance... and More By Jerry Barrett

ave you ever woke up feeling better than you thought possible? That happened to me on August 28, 2015 when I awoke after kidney transplant surgery. I felt no grogginess. No nausea. No pain. That's not the shocker. I actually felt great -- so much better than I had in several years! I thought to myself, "How can this be?" Flash back to several years ago: I was diagnosed with Chronic Kidney Disease though there was no history of it in my family. My symptoms were few and manageable so it was easy to not think of the inevitable. The disease did progress and I began to notice more signs and symptoms. I lost weight that I needed. I felt tired and fatigued. By 2012, my kidney function worsened to the point that dialysis or a kidney transplant would be necessary -- probably sooner than later. Each method has its pros and cons and its own set of risks. I hoped to avoid dialysis altogether or at least as long as possible. The best hope for long-term survival is to be transplanted before dialysis begins. Fortunately, I tested out to be a good candidate for a transplant. A well-matched kidney from a living donor would be my best bet. But, who would volunteer to be tested? And, then follow up by actually doing it? Especially, for an ol' codger like me. Ask someone to be a donor? That was out of the question! So, on the wait list for a deceased donor I automatically went, knowing that wait could take years. Somehow, despite even further kidney function decline, I managed to tolerate my symptoms for three more years. But, it was getting more difficult. I needed more and longer naps. Recovery from physical exertion took much longer. Time was drawing near. Then, it happened -- a live donor! A male in his early 40s from Northern Virginia. His kidney was an excellent match!

them kept saying, "This is such a wonderful thing!" I'm a positive person, yet I was having a hard time focusing on what was ahead. I was worried about a couple recent unfavorable lab results and what they might mean. Then just before they wheeled us off to our operating rooms, my son, Wade, got off his gurney, leaned down to give me a hug and said, "Let's do this, Dad." That's right, my donor was my son! Those four words he spoke to me were just what I needed to hear at that moment. I was ready and I knew for certain he was, too. I woke up from surgery alert and feeling really well. I realized only then just how badly I had felt before transplant. The docs said my new kidney from Wade began working immediately upon connection. Wade's recovery nurse kept calling Wade's kidney "The Bomb!" My kidney function and quality of life have improved immensely. My family and I are very thankful and always will be. Wade actually had a tougher go at first, but recovered nicely and was able to return to work within a few weeks. Our transplant surgery was a success thanks to our medical team, A huge shout-out goes to Wade's surgeon, Dr. Claire Morgan, for her skill, wisdom, caring manner, and support Some folks ask me if I can "feel" my new kidney. I can. What they really mean is, "Can you tell that it's one of Wade's?" I'm afraid not, but I really don't need to. You see, I knew the day he told me he wanted to do this that I was the luckiest person in the world. Not just for being offered a new lease on life, but to have a son that loves me that much.

Father and Son, Wade Barrett sharing happy days for sure!

Flash forward to August 28, 2015, Vidant Medical Center, Greenville, NC: We were prepped for transplant surgery and brought into pre-op. The nurses hooked us up to I.V.s. One of

Here is what happens to your vascular system as you lose weight: •

Blood vessels: Losing weight reduces your heart’s workload. Blood vessels supply the heart with the blood it needs to keep pumping. As you shed pounds, there’s less fat lurking around and forming plaque that can build up and clog your coronary arteries, causing a heart attack. Reduce your weight, reduce your risk. There is a direct relationship between a healthy weight and blood pressure. If you lose weight, you may be able to reduce your blood pressure medications or even eliminate them. The Cardiologists supervising The Healthy Weigh NowTM are always pleased to “unsubscribe” medications! Blood fats: The blood fats, or blood lipids, in your bloodstream change when you shed fat and weight. Weight loss can make your triglycerides go down, your LDL cholesterol go down, and your HDL cholesterol go up. That means there are more good cholesterol and less bad cholesterol and fat floating in your bloodstream.

Blood clots: Sometimes blood slows down and can form clots. Healthy weight and lower blood pressure generally mean fewer blood clots, so slimming down makes it less likely that a clot will break away and travel to your heart, lungs, or brain.

Your belly: Fat around the belly and the heart are especially detrimental to heart health. A 2011 study, published in the journal Cardiology, found that even normal-weight people with a “beer belly” or “muffin top” and heart disease have an increased risk of death than those with differently distributed weight. And research shows that hidden fat around the heart may be an even bigger indicator of cardiac disease than the waistline.

Negotiate

Like You Mean It

Tips to Help Women in Business Ask For The Money By Dorri C. Scott, MSW, Exec MBA

yY

ou’d love to ask for more money but frankly, you’re afraid to. But settling for less than you’re worth is a big mistake. In fact, it might even cost you the job. Many women mistakenly think they’re doing their employers a favor by not pushing for more, or that they’ll be more appealing if they don’t ask for what they’re worth. The economy might be the current excuse, but most underpricing occurs because many women just aren’t comfortable with negotiating. In fact, a recent article in The New Yorker found that only 7 percent of women negotiate their salaries up-front when entering a new position…compared to 57 percent of men. Those statistics are pretty telling and should change. Women can and do negotiate all the time outside the workplace – with spouses, with kids, with teachers, with friends – and we can do it in the professional setting, too. It’s just a matter of changing the way you think about asking for money. If you’re ready to stop sitting back and start negotiating like you mean it, read tried-and-true tips.

Never let them see you as a commodity Commodities are easy to obtain and easy to replace. That’s certainly not how you want to be perceived at your job – whether you’re an employee, a leader, or an entrepreneur. If the people you’re working with know that others virginia

educate. empower. inspire. inform.

share your skill set, they won’t have any reason to pay the price you’re asking for. They’ll be in control, not you. From day one, do everything you can to ensure that you aren’t seen as interchangeable or dispensable. Don’t shrink into your chair and become the invisible employee. Do what you need to do to stand out. Get in the middle of everything and bring new ideas to the table. Build relationships throughout the company. If you’re able to make yourself invaluable and leverage the things that make you unique, you’ll also make yourself impossible to replace. And what that happens, you’ll be in control of your own price.

Distinguish ambition from Greed Prior to launching yourself into a negotiation, it’s a good idea to take a step back and ask yourself why you’re working toward this particular goal. For example, say you’ve been in your current position for two and a half years without a significant raise, and you think your skills are worth much more. Before you march into your boss’s office, ask yourself: Why do I want a raise? Do I just want more money, or am I honestly interested in advancing in this company? It’s very important to distinguish ambition from greed. Wanting more money isn’t a bad

thing in and of itself, but it can get you into trouble if your quest for cash mires you deeper in a commitment you’re not passionate about or causes you to ignore opportunities that might be ideally suited to your strengths and interests. Always make sure you’re negotiating for the right reasons.

Be your own number one fan It can be hard for women to toot their own horns. To a certain extent, we’re actually wired to nurture and care for others and to put the good of the whole over our own personal interests. While these impulses aren’t inherently bad, it’s time for a newsflash: If you don’t announce your own achievements, you can bet that no one else is going to do it for you. With humility, make sure that you’re keeping your name, your accomplishments, your skill set in front of everyone. Have you ever noticed that women trend to downplay their achievements and use them to advance? Recall the stat on men and women making salary negotiations when they’re hired. Clearly, we females need to take a page from the male playbook and make sure that we’re getting the recognition and credit we’ve earned. If you still have doubts, consider that announcing your accomplishments your accomplishments validates the investments others have made in you. Your boss, for example, wants to know that she bet on a winner when she hired you!

Ask for everything and you may get it! July/August 2016 | VIRGINIA WOMAN MAGAZINE

What Is ‘Merit Aid’? By Luanne Lee, CCPRS, Your College Planning Coach ‘Merit Aid’ is a Pricing Strategy to Attract the ‘Best’ Applicants Most of the nation’s 1,540 four-year private colleges and universities now offer discounts (grants, scholarships) to some applicants. These “Presidential Leadership Awards” are issued regardless of financial need. VPs of Enrollment usually love merit aid; it’s an effective tool that enables them to offer financial incentives to the students who are, subjectively, the most attractive applicants. To fill seats and to compete with private colleges, numerous state schools are experimenting with merit aid, offering discounts to honors students or the in-state tuition rate to select out-of-state applicants. Discounts offered in 2015 were upwards of 50% making many private colleges almost as affordable as state universities.

4. Take AP Courses. More merit aid goes to students who show a willingness to be challenged. Take advanced placement, international baccalaureate, honors, and dual enrollment courses. 5. Complete Applications on Time. No college wants students who procrastinate and don’t turn in work done on time. By missing a deadline, your student creates the impression that the college is certainly not his/her first choice. 6. Interview Preparation. Know the school’s strengths. Know the names of the professors. Be able to articulate why you’re applying to the college and why it’s a good fit. A strong interview can improve the merit award.

Be a ‘Star’: 10 Ways Your Student Can Qualify for More Merit Aid ! 1. Apply to Multiple Colleges. Submit 6-10 well-balanced applications. Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder and it is common that your student will be seen as a star at one school but not at another.

7. Essays and Personal Recommendations. This is where you demonstrate your individuality and shine.

2. Invest in an SAT / ACT Prep Course. The SAT and ACT are still the primary measure of college applicants. An SAT/ACT prep course is a solid investment that leads to a greater likelihood of acceptance, more merit aid and less of a gap in the college’s financial aid package.

9. Tweak Your Major. Colleges want diverse graduates, so the intent to pursue a popular major can result in less merit aid. By pursuing a lesspopular major, the merit award is likely to rise.

3. Grades Matter. Pretend you’re a college. Would you give incentives to underachievers? When it comes to merit aid, more 'A's are always better than fewer 'A's.

10. Fill out the FAFSA Form. On the FAFSA form, students specify other colleges where they’re applying. Now, each college knows who the competitors are. This alone can significantly improve awards!

8. Geographical Diversity. Colleges want a diverse freshman class, and often give more merit aid to students who live out-of-state.

Remaining Vigilant For Equal Rights Part 1 By Patricia Depew Wirth “To educate, inspire and empower present and future generations Well, that clearly didn’t happen. The Declaration of Independence said, “all to remain vigilant in the quest for equal rights” is the mission of men are created equal,” but that did not mean mankind, i.e., women or the Turning Point Suffragist Memorial Association (Turning Point). Our country has not earned an A for how it has handled equal rights, beginning with our treatment of Native American Indians. When John Adams went off to Philadelphia to participate in the drafting of the Declaration of Independence in 1776, his wife, Abigail, sent him the following (spelling is hers): “...I long to hear that you have declared an independency --

Negros. The Constitution was passed thirteen years later in 1789 and it did not include women or Negros. While Amendment XIII abolished slavery in 1865 after the Civil War, it did not afford Negros equal rights. Amendment XV passed in 1870 and says: The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude. WOMEN WERE NOT CONSIDERED CITIZENS – only Negro men gained the right to vote! Three decades later in 1920 women became enfranchised when the XIX Amendment was ratified. In 2011, the late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia opined that women do not have constitutional protection against discrimination; hence the continued effort by millions to get the Equal Rights Amendment ratified; three more states are needed.

Trusts For Incapacity And Control By Dawn M. Dale, Esq. n the last issue of the Virginia Woman Magazine, I shared my belief that the decision to incorporate a Trust into an estate plan should be based upon careful consideration of a number of factors. Two of these factors – incapacity and control – will be explored in this article.

A trust is a complex legal structure that provides a set of detailed instructions to the trustee (i.e., the person that manages the trust) on how and when the trust assets will be used for the named beneficiaries. With a Revocable Living Trust, you are the beneficiary during your lifetime, and very often, you will serve as the initial Trustee. After your death, the Trust serves as a tool to manage your assets for the benefit of your beneficiaries. Similarly, there are many forms of irrevocable trusts that can be established during your lifetime for the benefit of others. As our population ages, the risk of developing dementia related illnesses increases. The Alzheimer’s Association recently published a number of startling statistics (See http://www.alz.org/facts/). Currently there are over 5 million people in America living with Alzheimer’s disease, someone new develops the disease every 66 seconds and currently 1 in 3 Americans dies with Alzheimer’s or some other form of dementia. Without a breakthrough in the prevention and cure of the illness, it is expected that the number of individuals afflicted with the disease will triple by 2050 with someone developing the disease every 33 seconds.

a trust can be used to manage an inheritance and provide clear guidance on the manner in which the funds will be used to provide for the beneficiary. It is even possible to structure these trusts to enable the beneficiary to continue eligibility for government programs, such as SSDI and Medicare, while using inherited funds to supplement government support. Often times, it is desirable to restrict a beneficiary’s access to an inheritance - not because of a true medical disability, but for reasons such as the beneficiary’s age (legally a minor), lack of maturity/wisdom, the lack of experience in financial matters, history of poor decision making in the areas of spending, drug and/or alcohol usage, susceptibility to influence/pressure by others or a desire to protect the beneficiary from future claims of creditors or divorcing spouses. At other times, a pool of funds might be set aside for benefit of a group of beneficiaries, such as an education fund for grandchildren or a health care fund for aging parents and siblings. The terms of these trusts can be carefully drafted to address the situation at hand and ensure that your wealth is being managed for the benefit of your loved ones and used in accordance with your wishes for years, and even decades, to come. If you would like to discuss whether a trust makes sense for you and your estate plan, please call to schedule a complimentary consultation.

In addition to Alzheimer’s, there are many illnesses that impact cognitive function and they can develop suddenly or over time. When cognitive function is impaired, the ability to manage our personal and financial decisions is impacted. As the level of impairment increases, it becomes necessary to rely on others to handle decisions for us. For all of these situations, a trust can be extremely valuable tool. The trustee can assume responsibility for the more complex financial decisions and, as the impairment escalates, our day-to-day financial management and decision making. It can provide flexibility, ease of administration and avoid the publicity involved with court supervised guardianship and conservatorship hearings and reporting. Similar benefits can be achieved by using a trust for our heirs. For beneficiaries suffering from a cognitive impairment or physical disability, Dawn M. Hurricanes, Storms, And Tornados…Oh My!!! By Sereda Y. Fowlkes

h

urricanes and tornadoes are both natural disasters that require preparation. With almost 1,200 tornadoes in the U.S. last year, as reported by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and with hurricane numbers expecting to be average or even somewhat greater (Insurance Industry News), it’s important to know what to do if one is in your area. While you can’t control the weather, you can take steps to help prepare your family and home for tornado and hurricane seasons. Here are some tips on what to do. Prepare Your Home Atlantic hurricane seasons run from June until the end of November (Insurance Industry News). Additionally, peak tornado season in the U.S. is March through May in the southern states, and late spring through early summer in the northern states, according to Ready.gov. However, you shouldn’t wait for tornado or hurricane seasons to make your home secure. The American Red Cross suggests hiring a professional to help reinforce masonry walls that provide support to your home, secure your chimney and to connect your manufactured home permanently to it’s foundation. If you have time before a hurricane or tornado approaches, the Red Cross also suggests moving or securing lawn furniture and other items that may become a projectile during a storm. Plan a Family Drill Practicing where to go in the event of a storm keeps everyone in your household safe in a real emergency. For example, if your home has a basement, you should seek shelter there. If you don’t have access to a basement, then you still have a few options, such as the lowest floor, under stairwells, an interior hallway, or a small center room, like a bathroom or closet (NOAA). It’s always important to avoid windows and to use sturdy protection as cover, with the NOAA suggesting a mattress or sleeping bag. Stay Safe on the Road If pulling over and getting inside a sturdy building to seek shelter isn’t possible, the National Weather Service advises staying in the car with your seat belt on and keeping your head down and covered with your

hands and a blanket, if you have one stashed in your car. Also, you should avoid seeking shelter under a bridge or overpass, according to the Ohio Committee for Severe Weather Awareness. The weather service and Red Cross advise that while you can exit your vehicle and head to a ditch, you may still encounter flying debris — including your car. Both organizations also advise changing your plans if you know that severe weather is approaching. Know the Difference Between a Watch and a Warning Knowing the difference between a watch and a warning is part of being prepared. A watch means that a storm is possible in the area, notes the weather service. In a warning, a storm is expected or occurring, for example, a tornado sighting (NOAA). It’s also a time for action, as you should move to a safe area, says the weather service. Pack an Emergency Kit If a tornado or hurricane touches down in your area, it might be a few days before you have electricity and clean running water in your home. To get through those days, Ready.gov recommends an all-purpose emergency kit that includes enough water (at least one gallon per person in your household per day) and food for at least three days, a battery-powered or hand crank radio, extra batteries and a map so you can stay up to date on storm movements. To stay prepared, contact my Allstate office for a Disaster Kit, which will include supplies like a flashlight, collapsible water bottle, rain slickers, hand sanitizer and dust respirator. (while supplies last) Protecting your Home It’s important to have your home and cars insured because you never know when a catastrophe might occur. Also, contact your property insurer after a storm to assess any potential damage to your property. By taking a few steps to help practice what to do during severe weather, packing an emergency kit and insuring your property, your family can be better prepared and protected when a storm is in your area. The Reality of Running A Small Business:

s

prepare yourself (and your loved ones) By Karen Williams

tarting a business isn’t for the faint of heart. Being your own boss offers rewards—and plenty of challenges as well. Transitioning from working for someone else to running your own company brings changes that not only you need to navigate, but that your family and friends also need to adjust to. “Realistic expectations are required by both the entrepreneur and close family. It must be a ‘team sport’,” explains SCORE mentor Steve Spencer. As you prepare to start your business, keep these things in mind so you— and your loved ones— can more easily transition into the brave new world of entrepreneurship.

hours than when they worked for an employer. Finding ways to maintain a comfortable work/life balance might be challenging in the beginning, but it’s necessary for the well-being of you, your family, and your business. According to Spencer,“Realize that your new business will need a variety of help and advice. You will need to form relationships with professionals you may not have needed to collaborate with before. To better your chances of success, consider creating a business development board comprised of legal, accounting, banking, and industry experts who will agree to provide pro bono guidance as you begin. Having a team to guide you can help you prepare yourself—and your family—for what to expect from running your own business.” SCORE mentors, with their breadth of experience, are often willing to serve on business development boards. Also consider talking with other entrepreneurs in your community who have walked the same path and can offer valuable insight and experience about the realities of entrepreneurship. If you need assistance in determining if you and you are suited for small business, there are resources out there to help you. Consider taking advantage of the free mentoring services from SCORE (find more details at www.SCORE.org) and also check out the information on the Small Business Administration website (www.sba.gov).

Income might be unpredictable at first Without a steady paycheck coming from an employer, you might find it challenging to keep up with expenses both professionally and personally. When you’re starting out, revenue from your business will take time to ramp up. It takes time to build a network of connections and clients.

Since 1964, SCORE “Mentors to America’s Small Business” has helped more than 9 million aspiring entrepreneurs and small business owners through mentoring and business workshops. More than 13,000 volunteer business mentors in over 320 chapters serve their communities through entrepreneur education dedicated to the formation, growth and success of small businesses. For more information about starting or operating a small business request a SCORE mentor at www.washingtondc.score.org

You may need to forego some luxuries Prepare to make some personal sacrifices when self-employed. A daily caramel latte and Friday dinners out at your favorite five-star restaurant probably won’t be in the budget for a while. Working from home requires discipline If you decide to run your business from an office in your home, you’ll face a whole new set of distractions that can threaten your productivity. Tuning out the personal to-do list and spontaneous requests from friends to meet up for coffee during the workday demand concentration—and the strength to say “no.” Expect to work really hard Starting a small business requires a significant amount of time and effort. Many new entrepreneurs find themselves working harder and for longer Karen Williams Washington DC SCORE Chapter Chair karen.williams@scorevolunteer.org 202-619-1000 As vice president of corporate contracts at Northrop Grumman, Ms. Williams developed and implemented company wide supply chain strategies and key processes, including socio-economic business planning, strategy and compliance relative to its supply chain. Easy Guidelines For Feeding Your Dog Raw

By Julia Dunning, Owner, Dolce & Ardesia Yummy Treats LLC

Where To Buy: Reach out to local farmers and visit local farmers’ markets. It is important to only feed your dog pasture-raised, antibioticfree and hormone-free animals. The drugs that factory-farmed animals are fed can transfer to your dog, affecting health, growth and they even stay in their DNA! Expense Comparison: I feed Ardesia, a 90 pound mastiff puppy for about $4-5 a day. If i fed her high quality dry or freeze-dried food, it would cost me $15-20 a day! Hearts can be fed as muscle meat and are only about $2-3 per pound. Chicken necks are great, $11.50 per pound, the cartilage in them is an excellent source of glucosamine and chondroitin. Nutritional Needs: I would do some online research to see what feels best for you to feed, based on your dog’s needs. The Calcium-Phosphorus ratio is important. Large breed puppies need more bone in their diets, than full-grown dogs for example. You want their bones to growth healthy and strong, not overgrow too fast with too much protein going to the muscles. I feed about 50% raw meaty bones, 30% muscle meat and 20% veggies. Liver should only be fed a couple times a week. Other than that, as many different parts, of as many different animals you can feed is best. This fits well with what is available at given times of the year. My friends that hunt give me deer legs for her. Also, I try to mostly feed animals she could ‘take-down’, so less beef, more lamb and pork and I don’t feed beef load-bearing bones. The nice thing is, that dogs thrive on many of the animal parts that humans don’t eat regularly, which means these are less expensive to purchase. For veggies, I use kale, sweet potato, celery, cucumber, beets, zucchini, pumpkin, a little ginger and apples. Other fruits digest too quickly and can ferment before the rest of the meal is digested, so bananas, pineapple, papaya, blueberries, strawberries are better for snacks. I pulverize the veggies in the Cuisinart, then freeze them for 24 hours, so they are very broken down. Your dog is really not getting the nutrients so much as using the fiber to move everything through. A good fiber diet of veggies and ground flax seeds help scrub the intestines and prevent parasites from being able to settle. 90% of a dog’s immunity is in their intestines, so it is very important to keep healthy! But WHY Should I Switch? Let’s say you were to eat fast food, twice a day, for your life. Do you think you would be healthy? How would you feel? Mentally? Physically? When your dog needs to go to the vet, you panic, right? Is he or she ok? What could it be? You love them so much? They are a huge part of your life? So maybe think about that each time you feed them, and prevent, as best as you can, those future ailments, and panics. Information in this article is based on years of feeding raw, research and success. It is not provided by a licensed veterinarian nor based on any doggie food & drug administration, etc.

Sometimes I Feel Like I Can Fly! By Elaine Gibson ne of my dear friends gave me a wall hanging for my birthday that says “I am fairly certain that given a cape and a tiara, I can save the world.” Somedays I believe this is true.

Interestingly, I have learned that I am in total control of feeling this way. I have stumbled on to a high alkaline, high raw lifestyle. The changes that flow to me and through me continue to be extraordinary…even magical. Today I am a living testimonial for this lifestyle. When cancer struck my life for the second time I knew something had to change. The change had to come from within me and in the choices I was making. Soon, I discovered there were two steps crucial to my survival that I needed to take.

Step 2: Facilitate Healing The second step was to supply the body with what it needed to facilitate healing. Live food was the facilitator. To function properly, every cell in your body needs an alkaline and oxygen-rich environment. This is the bottom line. If there were another way to achieve this one simple goal I would be the first one on the bandwagon, but I am here because raw food, live food, begets live cells and a living, healthy body! You cannot find health in a bottle but you can find it in raw foods. It all begins with diet and leads you to who you can become.

Step 1: Remove Interference

Why Raw?

First of all, I had to remove the interference that was preventing me from being well. What do I mean by interference? What is the one thing we all do every day, at least three times a day?

When you are seeking to look and feel extraordinary,“Why raw” is the right question to ask. These answers will set you on the path to renewed living with vitality and youthfulness.

That’s right, we all eat!

How will a raw food lifestyle benefit you specifically? The same way it has benefited me and thousands of others. Raw food is living food; offering the life force we are all looking for. The digestion of raw food only requires

Unfortunately, the choices we make usually include: •

Processed foods

White flour

Cooked food

Or to put it in simpler, more precise terms, dead food! The simple act of eliminating these foods leads to a healthy and strong immune system. The body knows what to do when we allow it to do so.

a small amount of energy (20%) compared to the 80% cooked and processed food requires. This leaves the body rested and able to heal and maintain a strong immune system. Raw food will bring you: •

A nourished and satisfied body

The ability to attain and maintain a healthy weight

Bright eyes, glowing skin

More energy and a good night’s sleep

Before you roll your eyes, it is important to understand that high raw may be about 40% right now. That would be a fabulous step forward. COMPLIME

Dear Elaine & Nevin, Today, is my 50th day in starting a healthier lifestyle along with helpful hints from your Renewed Living website to help guide me. I have chosen to be a vegan and do not eat meat or dairy. Recently seeing my doctor and being told to take only half of my original dose of meds, I am very exciting to see I will soon be off of my diabetic medication. As you know Elaine, this has been a huge struggle for me. Today my 50th day, I weigh 25 lbs. less, which means I have lost an average of a 1/2 lb. per day! Still, weight loss was not my goal as much as leaving diabetes in the dust. It's certainly a nice added bonus! Now, I know I can do this.

Tomatoes, especially, become juicer and take on a fuller flavor when hydrated  Lime is a nice addition to this gazpacho  Top with sprouts and black pepper  This is a perfect recipe to add in some kelp and turmeric for potency. I've tried your recipes that go along with being a vegan. My newest favorite meal is spaghetti squash with zucchini & onions cooked with Bragg's Liquid Amino spray to put on top of the spaghetti squash. It's healthy, delicious and simple. Entrepreneurs Are Crazy People! I Should Know!

a

By Kim Lysik Di Santi, CPBA, CPVA re you an entrepreneur? According to the SBA, 1 in 11 women and 1 in 10 men are.

Dictionary.com defines an 'entrepreneur' as: A person who organizes and manages any enterprise, especially a business, usually with considerable initiative and risk. Over the past 16 years, I have worked with over 300 individual clients, with at least 200 of them being entrepreneurs. Today I will embellish upon three of the characteristics I have observed in the entrepreneurs that I know. Brian Tracy said, “You have to put in many, many, many tiny efforts that nobody sees or appreciates before you achieve anything worthwhile.” That brings me to the first characteristic: 1. Most Entrepreneurs Started Working At An Early Age At the risk of sounding all... - I walked to school uphill both ways in my bare feet in the snow - I started babysitting when I was 10. I was the only girl with a paper route at age 12, for 3 years. I started at a fast food restaurant at 15 and then was a lifeguard from age 16. Most summers I worked 2 jobs; a few I worked 3. Like many of you, my work life has continued pretty much like that. Kathy Ireland said, “I work with wonderful people who support me. And, my beliefs are that the business needs to serve the family rather than the family serve the business.” That brings me to the second characteristic: 2. Most Entrepreneurs Have Exceptional Drive Dictionary.com defines the verb 'drive' as to strive vigorously toward a goal or objective; to work, play, or try wholeheartedly and with determination.

I have one 11-year-old son. So, how does this kind of overriding drive mix with being an “older” mother for me? I will tell you that it’s hard and I’m torn, often. I want to go, go, go for my business and be at the place where my age peers are with their empty nests and college graduates and weddings. But I’m not there in my life. I am here and I am present. I override my default. I stop work at 4pm so that I can meet his bus. It’s hard for me to get to morning and evening events. Even though the drive is ALWAYS there. Michael Gerber said, “The entrepreneur is not really interested in doing the work; he is interested in creating the way the company operates. In that regard, the entrepreneur is an inventor. He or she loves to invent, but does not love to manufacture or sell or distribute what he or she invents.” This brings me to the third characteristic: 3. Entrepreneurs Are Typically Impatient; More Of The Hare Than The Tortoise This is a tricky one. I say that because, in order to actually pull off many of the things that we say that we can do, we really need to be hares; moving at fast speeds and getting on with it. Another way of wording this is entrepreneurs tend to be inconsistent. For us exciting hares, the tortoise seems boring. And yet, we all know the end of the story, the tortoise wins. So while I am definitely more of a hare, I have needed to learn when to use tortoise behavior. These are just three of the many characteristics that entrepreneurs share in common. I hope that you have enjoyed getting a closer look into the entrepreneur mind set.

Drive is that feeling in your gut that tells you that you want something and that you’re going to do whatever it takes to get there. It is the part of us that will get up early or keep us up late looking for another way to do it, pushing ourselves to keep going. Entrepreneurs have an excess of drive. I have described it to other people as a low-grade buzzing noise that I always hear.

Come to my session

Know Your Style For Success

So we have this drive that sometimes other people think is crazy, and we know what we want. I consider drive my default. I tend to take this path.

Let Me Entertain YOU!

s

By Tammy L. Shapiro

ummertime is here and if you are like me, I love being outside, I especially enjoy outdoor entertaining. I love setting a fun tablescapes with candles, perhaps in recycled wine bottles, fresh seasonal flowers and incorporating the outdoors into my overall table design. Summertime entertaining can be anything from inviting the girls over for cocktails on the deck, a casual barbecue, to an intimate dinner party for twelve of my closest friends or a picnic lunch at one of the local vineyards. My happy place is outside and I like to take full advantage of the amazing locally grown fruits and vegetables this time of year. I embrace the whole farm-to-table concept and love to enjoy it anytime I can.

You don’t have to make everything yourself. There are so many amazing products on the market these days that you can use. Everything from dips to desserts, of course remember to present them on your own serving pieces and not in the container you purchased them in! Jazz them up with a little garnish, if you buy a store-bought cake, put it on a nice platter and garnish with a few fresh berries.

When entertaining, I think it is important to carefully plan your guest list, to make sure the group of people you are inviting, have some common interests. This will help to take the pressure off of you, to carry the conversation and entertain everyone.

As much as I love my veggies this time of year, I really have a true passion for incorporating the lush flavors of the seasonal fruits into as many of my dishes and cocktails as possible. I never limit my use of fruits in desserts or cocktails. I love using them in salads or to accompany savory meat/fish dishes as well. Nothing better than a grilled salmon topped with a sweet mango chutney or a spinach salad tossed with fresh seasonal berries, goat cheese and a sweet vinaigrette. I find sometimes people are afraid to step outside their comfort zone and try these delightful combinations, but once they do, they never want to go back to their traditional way of using these ingredients.

I truly believe when you first start entertaining, sometimes it is easier to have a set theme, it will help keep you on track when planning your menu and beverages. The theme should be reflected in as much as possible, starting with the invitation. A theme can be anything from a winetasting to Tex-Mex with Margaritas, to Italian.

It’s okay to do a potluck if you are not totally comfortable preparing everything. Perhaps a barbecue, where you provide the drinks, burgers, hotdogs…ask your guests to bring side dishes and desserts.

The last tip I want to leave you with, is to relax and enjoy the experience of welcoming your friends and family. Remember you have been gracious enough to invite them into your home, provided great food and drinks, now the rest is up to them to enjoy and have fun.

Perhaps some of you are thinking right now, that entertaining is just not your cup of tea and that’s ok, I have some friends that get physically sick at the thought of entertaining. It is not for everyone, but I am here to help with a few tips that I hope will inspire you to open up your home and do a little summer entertaining. •

Keep it simple and start small. Cocktails on the deck with a few snacks, light menu. I don’t suggest trying a new recipe that you have never prepared before, it is too much pressure.

I hope I have inspired you to at least entertain the idea of opening up your home this Summer and invite some friends over. Maybe this will push you to step outside your comfort zone and try entertaining for the first time. Remember, no one’s going to be upset at an invitation for cocktails or to dinner and not having to cook themselves. But more importantly, I encourage you get out, enjoy the outdoors and all of the flavors of the season! Cheers!

Place on paper towel to catch the excess grease and then plate. Cook extra if you want to eat them with your Chili also or if you want to top your taco salad with them.

Taco Salad While salsa is simmering, brown 2-3lbs ground beef. Once browned, add packaged taco seasoning and simmer per directions. Ground beef not used for taco salads will be saved for making Chili. Use a tortilla bowl maker (can be gotten locally at Byler’s or Target) to make the taco salad bowls. Use a large flour tortilla and heat in oven until crispy. Allow bowls to cool then put in lettuce, tomato, ground beef, salsa sour cream, cheese and any other salad items you choose. Top with Ranch dressing or a Spicy Ranch would work well too.

Lisa Heather Torb

ere at Heather’s Holistic, our full time job is helping people to detox. A detox program can help the body’s natural cleansing process by stimulating the liver to drive toxins from the body, promoting elimination through intestines, kidneys and skin and refueling the body with healthy nutrients. New research shows that almost every disease can be linked to toxicity. Toxins are everywhere; the air we breathe, the chemicals we clean with, the food we eat, the toxins we put on our skin, and the arsenal of drugs we put into our bodies.

An Ionic Footbath will help detox your body by immersing your feet in water with positive and negative ions. It re-balances the body by excreting any excess toxins via the kidneys, liver, bowels and skin not only DURING but also AFTER treatment. It can help with headache, pain relief, joint stiffness, improved sleep patterns, removing heavy metals, menstrual pain, arthritis pain, and boosting the immune system as well as improve kidney and liver functions.

Detox the lymphatic system with a massage that not only feels amazing but massages the lymphatic glands in the body. It helps to reduce cellulite and inch loss while breaking down fatty deposits, flushing out toxins, fat and water. Ask for Lydia.
