HEALTH RESOLUTIONS That Are Easy to Keep

ew Year’s Eve brings to mind NYC’s Times Square, noisemakers and bubbly, but what a difference a day can make. The month of January signifies a fresh start, complete with a new perspective and for many, New Year’s resolutions. All right, for some it may have looked a little more like a hangoverfilled day spent on the couch. But were you one of the many people who made a New Year’s resolution this year? Resolutions can get a bad rap. They often aren’t specific enough, making them unrealistic and unattainable. But the notion of aspiring to be better is to be commended. Self-improvement shouldn’t be dismissed as “all or nothing.” You’re more likely to stick with your goals if you set gradual benchmarks. When it comes to establishing a healthy lifestyle, small changes can make a big difference. For example, if you want to lose weight, create a weekly weight loss goal, in addition to your final target number. Don’t give up even if there are weeks in which you don’t lose any weight. Establish ways to hold yourself accountable: Track and measure your progress with apps or create a journal outlining your goals and the steps you’re taking to achieve them.
EACH OF US IS GIVEN BUT ONE CHANCE AT LIFE. No retakes. No repeats. So this New Year, make a covenant - To Live, Laugh, Love. Live Well – The world is an interesting and beautiful place, so live well. Be good to yourself and others. Celebrate life and take the time to appreciate how great it is. Laugh Often - Laughter is a universal language that can cure the soul, so laugh often. Laughter humanizes us, allows us to make friends, and build memories. Love Greatly - Love is the most generous gift we are given, so love greatly. Love for others as well as yourself.

These five resolutions are so easy to resolve to keep, they risk giving New Year’s resolutions a new reputation. An added plus: They also happen to be kidney-friendly.

Avoid unnecessary painkillers. Pain medications provide pain relief (maybe you even relied on them to nurse your post-NYE hangover), but it’s important to balance the potential benefits with the risk of dangerous side effects, such as kidney damage, fluid retention, increased blood pressure, and digestive issues. Think twice before you reach into your medicine cabinet and check both prescription and over the counter (OTC) drug labels to evaluate the risks and benefits before taking a particular medication. Quit smoking (or never start). Many bars and restaurants across the country are smoke-free. It’s getting cold out, making it the perfect time to save yourself the trip outside while bettering your health. In addition to causing lung diseases and cancer, smoking acts as an accelerator for any disease that you may have. Smoking reduces blood flow to the kidneys and can also interfere with medications used to treat high blood pressure, reducing their effectiveness. Quitting can be difficult, but it is one of the most important lifestyle changes that you can make. For additional resources and tips on how to quit, visit the National Kidney Foundation.

Sit less and stand more. In case you missed it, recent research has linked sitting for eight hours or more a day with developing kidney disease, as well as a host of other chronic conditions. This rings true even in otherwise physically-active people. Sitting for that length of time is typical for the average desk job, but most of us go way beyond that. We sit on the couch, while driving, while riding the bus, and during dinner, just to name a few! While sitting is mandatory for some activities, get creative and expand your comfort zone when it’s not. The human body was designed to be upright, but in modern society sometimes we need to help it out. Consider a standing desk and standing while talking on the phone. Catch more Zzzs. Hit the sack earlier to make sure you’re getting enough sleep each night. Studies suggest that irregular sleep patterns, eating before going to sleep and not getting enough sleep are all linked to obesity, while getting enough sleep is linked with maintaining a healthy weight. Sleep health is 50 percent habit and 50 percent fatigue. Obesity can cause kidney disease, because the kidneys have to work harder to filter out toxins and to meet the metabolic demands of

the increased body mass index (BMI) in obese individuals. When it comes to a good night’s rest, most people require about seven hours. Cuddle up and snooze your way to a healthy weight. (Okay, I would be remiss if I didn’t also encourage you to incorporate healthy eating and exercise routines alongside better sleeping habits.) Get organized. It’s helpful to make a checklist. Organize one “room” or aspect of your life at a time. When it comes to your health, tackle your medical records and lab documents. There are many apps that can help you keep track of all recent doctor’s visits, test results and immunizations. A trusty file cabinet will also do the trick. Don’t forget to clean out your medicine cabinet -- expired medications and ointments have a way of lingering around. Make a list of all the medications you’re taking, including vitamins, supplements and over-thecounter (OTC) drugs. Share it with primary care practitioners and specialists alike. Some medications are kidney-toxic. It’s important for your health care providers to determine if any medications and supplements could interact with one another in negative ways. Doses of drugs can change as you age or your kidney function declines.

WOMAN to WOMAN What She Needs To Know About Cervical Cancer By Dr. Gloria Ivey-Crowe
anuary is Cervical Cancer month. The incidence of cervical cancer has decreased more than 50% in the past 30 years because of wide spread screening with the Pap smear. In 1975, the rate was 14.8 per 100,000 women in the United States. In 2006, it had been reduced to 6.5 per 100,000 women. Death from cervical cancer has also decreased significantly. The American Cancer Society estimated that in 2009, there were about 11,000 new cases of cervical cancer and about 4,000 deaths from the disease. Of the 11,000 new cases that were diagnosed, it is estimated that 50% of those women had never had a Pap smear done and another 10% had not been screened within the past 5 years. The Pap smear is a screening test for cervical cancer. The test is perÂformed in your healthcare provider's office. The Pap smear is obtained when your healthcare provider performs a pelvic examination and inserts an instrument referred to as a speculum inside the vagina. The speculum may be either made of metal or plastic. The speculum opens the vagina and once it is properly positioned, allows the healthcare provider to see the cervix. The cervix is the lower portion of the uterus and contains cells on the outside and inside that are taken for further evaluation. The cells are removed with a brush that contains bristles and a flat spatula. These cells are suspended in fluid and sent to the lab. The American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommends that screening start at age 21. How frequently a Pap smear is performed is determined by the age of the patient, onset of sexual activity, prior abnormal results, medical problems that may require more frequent surveillance, and/or use of contraceptives. The interval can be increased to every three years in the woman who has had three consecutive normal Pap smears. The causative factors for cervical cancer include exposure to the human papilloma virus (HPV), early sexual activity, cigarette smoking and multiple sexual partners. Preventive measures include use of condoms, monogamous relationships and early administration of the HPV vaccine. To date, more than 100 strains of virus have been identified. The recommendation is that both females and males are vaccinated prior to exposure to sexual activity.

American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends that women continue screening until they reach 70 unless they have had a hysterectomy. Cervical Cancer Key Statistics* The American Cancer Society is committed to the eradication of cervical cancer. About 12,990 new cases of invasive cervical cancer were diagnosed in 2016. About 4,120 women will die from cervical cancer.
New recommendations require that all persons 30 years of age and older be tested for the presence of low or high risk viral strains along with the standard screening of the Pap smear and appropriate management recommended. The risk of cervical cancer decreases with age. ACOG recommends that women continue screening until they reach 70 or have a hysterectomy which is the removal of the cervix and uterus. The key to prevention is being consistent with your appointments and early detection of any abnormalities which may increase your risk of cervical cancer. Cervical cancer usually has no symptoms. You may feel perfectly well. However, abnormal bleeding not related to any other known causes such as fibroids, hormonal abnormalities, cervical or uterine polyps, may be a sign. Other signs include bleeding between cycles, pelvic pain, discharge with a foul odor. The treatment for cervical cancer varies depending on the stage of cancer. It could be surgical, radiation, chemotherapy or a combination of all three. The more advanced the cancer, the more treatment required. Once one of the most common causes of cancer death for American women, the cervical cancer death rate has gone down by more than 50%. The main reason for this was the increased use of the Pap test. The screening procedure can often find changes BEFORE cancer develops. It can also find cervical cancer EAR Y - when it is in its most curable stage. Most cervical cancer cases are found in women younger than age 50. It rarely develops in women younger than 20 years old. About 20% of cervical cancers are found in women older than 65 years of age. Hispanic women are most likely to get cervical cancer followed by African American, American Indians and Alaskan natives and Whites. Is Wine Really Good for Your Heart? BY ADAM KLINE, FOOD AND WINE CONSULTANT The common consensus is that drinking wine is good for the heart. A glass a day will keep heart disease away. Why? Many studies investigated the benefits of red wine suggests that a moderate amount (one drink a day for women and two drinks a day for men) actually lowers the risk of heart attacks for people in middle age by 30 to 50 percent. A drink is defined as 12 fluid ounces of beer, 5 fl oz. of wine or 1.5 fl oz. of 80% proof distilled spirits. Moderate consumption of red wine on a regular basis may be a preventative against coronary disease and some forms of cancer.
RED WINE DEFINITIONS
Where the idea came from.
The medical profession has recognized the healthful and nutritive properties of wine for thousands of years. Hippocrates recommended specific wines to purge fever, disinfect and dress wounds, as diuretics, or for nutritional supplements. The general public, on the other hand, did not truly become aware of this knowledge until 1991 when 60 minutes aired ‘The French Paradox’ episode. The paradox is that the French have only one third the numbers of fatal heart attacks and less than half the rates of coronary heart disease of Americans, while eating more fat than Americans, have similar cholesterol levels and smoke more. The researchers of the French Paradox suggest the reason behind this difference is related to the different levels of alcohol consumption, focusing mainly on wine. They concluded with the prediction that consuming 20-30 grams of alcohol a day could lower the rate of heart disease by 40%.
ANTIOXIDANTS are nutrients from food that may protect the body against the damaging effects of free radicals, molecules that can damage cells, and may play a role in heart disease, cancer and other diseases, such as asthma and Alzheimer’s.
What’s good for the heart in Red wine?
Studies show red wine’s pheolic compounds are shown to be beneficial in that they have powerful antioxidant effects. The focuses of many studies are on its phenolic constituents, particularly resveratrol and the flavonoids. Resveratrol, found in grape skins and seeds increase HDL cholesterol (the Good cholesterol) and prevent LDL cholesterol (the Bad cholesterol) from forming. Clinical and statistical evidence and laboratory studies have shown these may boost the immune system, block cancer formation, and possibly protect against heart disease and even prolong life. One recent study, published in the 2004 year-end edition of the American Journal of Physiology, indicates that resveratrol also inhibits formation of a protein that produces a condition called cardio fibrosis, which reduces the heart’s pumping efficiency when it is needed most, at times of stress. Flavonoids, meanwhile, exhibit the antioxidant properties which help prevent blood clots and plaques formation in the arteries.

The best way to reduce your risk of heart disease is to stop smoking, eat a balanced diet and regular exercise. While there is a large amount of evidence that regular intake or a moderate amount of alcohol can reduce the risk of dying from Coronary Heart Disease, drinking heavily greatly increases your risk of developing cancer, liver disease and trauma. The findings in these studies do not represent a reason to take up drinking if you currently abstain, but they do represent a reason to cut back if you drink heavily. A Happy Heart Includes Healthy Living Habits By Dorri C. Scott, MSW “Heart disease is the number one cause of death for American women. Stroke is the number three cause of death. To get the most benefit for your healthy heart, choose more fruits, vegetables and foods with whole grains. Select healthy protein. Eat less food with added sugar, calories and unhealthy fats.” (Exercise is your friend. Move daily – YOUR healthy heart depends on it.) - American Heart Association (2016)
Healthy Habits include: 1. Take all Meds as Prescribed It is important to take all medicines prescribed by your Medical Provider EXACTLY as prescribed. Often times after feeling well, patients want to stop or miss days taking prescribed medicine. Each medicine is prescribed with your TOTAL health in mind. The regimen is there to help and support your well-being and each has its own purpose. Do NOT run out of medicine and do not skip or quit when feeling better. Should you want to make any changes or need a new prescription for any reason, consult with your Doctor. He or she knows best. 2. If you Smoke – QUIT! One’s risk for having a heart attack is more than twice that of a person who has never smoked. Smoking also increases the risk for sudden cardiac death in people with coronary heart disease. Having a hard time quitting? Check with your Doctor. Your medical provider can recommend the best method for you to stop smoking. 3. Manage Your Calories Recognizing that as we get older losing weight is more difficult; experts recommend you manage the calories intake. Start TODAY! Keeping a
journal on your electronic device is a great way to keep track of caloric intake. Too, the old fashioned way with pen, paper and a journal still works. - To learn more about calorie consumption, visit the American Heart Association site. 4. Eat a Balanced Diet – DAILY - Reduce your salt intake - Choose low fat or fat free milk, cheese and /or yogurt - Choose reduced fat, low fat, light or no fat dressing. As an alternative, consider squeezing a fresh lemon over your greens instead of using a salad dressing. - Choose leaner cuts of meat - Avoid dark meats and remove all skin off of chicken - Weekly have a “NO MEAT DAY” – Eat vegetables and for dessert try a different fruit in season 5. Read Food Labels 6. EXERCISE - Walking is a great smart start if you are spending too much time on the couch. By making exercise a part of your daily routine, you will:

Approaching That Difficult Subject . . . By Donna Ivey
our loved one may need home care. This can be a difficult subject to discuss. Some suggested methods to help ease any resistance are: • If your loved one’s health and safety are at issue, be direct and communicate your concerns. Push the discussion forward. • Involve others such as clergy, physicians, or a geriatric care manager • Utilize community resources such as Area Agency on Aging
During the discussion, make sure you focus on what your loved one’s issues and concerns are; not what your personal issues are or what you perceive their concerns to be. They are much more likely to hear your concerns and accept your suggestions if they feel as if they are an integral part of the conversation. It is strongly suggested that you have a “family meeting” prior to your discussion with the designated loved one. This will give the family an opportunity to process emotions, brainstorm ideas and come together with a mutually agreed upon plan. This will help illustrate to your loved one that everyone is united in love, concern and commitment to meeting their needs. The term “strength in numbers” certainly does apply here. After having a family meeting with your designated loved one where everyone has an opportunity to express their feelings and thoughts, gently suggest that the loved one make an appointment with their physician to have a thorough evaluation. An appointment with a geriatric psychologist may be necessary depending on your loved one’s condition. This professional evaluation can go a long way in helping them decide that they can benefit from some assistance in their home. Don’t nag them about this evaluation- simply plant the seed and water it from time to time. Eventually, most elders realize that they cannot care for themselves as they used to. Seeing a doctor seems to make this decision easier.
Be direct and speak with your loved one about scheduling an appointment with a home care agency to come out and meet with them. This will allow your loved one to get a better understanding of what a home health care agency can do for them. Be specific about the tasks a caregiver will and will not perform. Let them know that they are still in control and that the home care process enables them to continue engaging in daily living activities in a safe and satisfying manner. Utilizing an agency can add significantly to everyone’s peace of mind. Finally, keep all of your discussions with them positive. Treat them as an equal participant- don’t parent! It is important to let your loved one make decisions. Your job is to help them make the decision, not to make decision for them. THE FAMILY PLAN Here are some considerations when involving your loved one in a conversation about the possibility of home care: • Your loved one must be the focus of all discussions and be totally involved (assuming their mental capabilities are up to the task) • Voice your opinions using “I” statements • Have a clear topic of every discussion • Be assertive about your thoughts • Be respectful of other opinions (especially your loved one’s) • Be mindful that it may take some time and several conversations to arrive at a consensus • Don’t blame others or use “You” Statements • Don’t try to accomplish too much in one conversation • Don’t expect that this will be easy; preparation, patience, and team work help immensely

How Do YOU Want to Be Perceived? As a photographer and image consultant, I see it all the time. I see women enter a room, intending to convey one message or characteristic and be surprised to hear that what people see is something entirely different. I’ve seen professional organizers who dress sloppy, financial advisers who dress sexy, interior designers who look bland and not at all creative, and CEOs that look frumpy. You name it, I’ve seen it. People have real reasons for the way they dress. Some are stuck due to negative experiences from their past, some have just never been taught and some believe it doesn’t matter. But people judge us first based on how we look and research shows that it typically takes six months to change a first impression. That matters!
So, how do you want people to perceive you? Do you want people to see you as casual, friendly, creative, confident, powerful, edgy, smart? No matter what adjectives you choose to describe yourself, when you dress in a way that communicates who you are and shows you at your best, it can change your life. Can you remember that time you bought a new outfit, couldn’t wait to put it on, went into the world and received compliments all day. Didn’t it make you feel like a million bucks? Didn’t it give you the confidence to stand up taller, voice your opinion more freely, approach new people and ideas? Wouldn’t it be great if you could feel like that every day?
But my appearance isn’t everything, right? True. You can shake hands, smile, lean in, introduce yourself, and speak clearly, all actions that add to a positive impression (definitely do them!), but the truth is that when you walk through that door, people first look at your appearance. They make assumptions about your entire life based on the information gathered in those first few seconds. It sounds overwhelming. And a bit unfair, actually. After all, we can’t be expected to be “on” all the time, right? Of course not. But once you define your style, you become really good at knowing what works for you on any occasion—what colors to wear, what necklaces to buy, whether that print looks good on you. Just imagine it. You can stop browsing through everything, no more buying tops that you’ll never really wear, no more overflowing closets with clothes that deliver mixed messages.
It all starts with creating that personal brand.

How To Eliminate Frustration, Hurt And Pain To Feel Happiness Again By Terrie Christine
elationships, disappointments and financial stress can go from being uncomfortable to unbearable. The end results from just “dealing with it” can cause the frustration, hurt and pain to spiral into an endless hole. Now more than ever, it is important to practice taking care of you. Embrace the Negative In order to appreciate the good stuff that happens in your life, you must experience what you feel as unpleasant. Emotions are your reality. We are human and will always have them. When you are mad, allow yourself to be mad.

Look Into Mirror Let me introduce you to the mirror technique. It is a simple and yet profound way to reconnect to the love you feel which no longer exists. Stand in front of a mirror. Look at your reflection pupil-to-pupil and simple say “I love you. I love you very much. You are the one I love. I love you with all my heart. You are awesome and I love you .” Give yourself 3-4 minutes in front of the mirror repeating these lines many times, in random order and several times thought out the day. Keep practicing every day until it feels comfortable, natural and juicy. By feeling this love from within, you will discover that you no longer seek to fill a void. The only void that existed in your life was the disconnect you had from your own inner love.
Take your time. Allowing yourself to spend time with unpleasant feelings, will provide the opening to the truth behind the emotion.

Express Gratitude Gratitude is a feeling from within that sprouts from your heart. Gratitude should be treated like a life-style and should flow generously and not be dished out randomly. As you live your life in gratitude, you will find yourself being drawn towards focusing on all the good things around you. Even the smallest of small elements in your life become an opportunity to celebrate.

Private Scholarship . . . Reality Or Fairy Tale? By Luanne Lee, CCPRS, Your College Planning Coach rivate scholarships - we love them and hate them. We love them because they make a good story. We hate them because for most of us they are so darn elusive and time consuming to get!
The media loves to promote stories that have happy fairy tale endings. What's better than a student being able to win enough money in scholarships to pay for their full tuition room and board? Sounds like a fairy tale story that will get lots of clicks. But in reality, Mark Kantrowitz, former publisher of FastWeb.com and FinAid.org, reports less than 20,000 students a year receive a completely free ride to college. Out of the millions of students who apply to college each year, what do you think your chances are? At Your College Planning Coach we recommend your #1 priority should be researching and targeting colleges that want your student and are more likely to offer your student Financial Aid in the form of Grants and Merit Scholarships. According to College Board’s Trends in Education, 40% of all free aid money is given by colleges. Less than 11% comes from private grants/scholarships. That doesn’t sound like a good use of your time, does it? Spend your valuable time more efficiently. Once you've applied to those colleges that offer your student Grants and Merit Scholarships, put whatever time and effort you have into applying for private scholarships. Please share the following tips with your student….. 1. Applying for private scholarships to pay the bulk of your college bill is like taking on a part time job. It will require you researching hundreds of scholarships and submitting applications and essays for dozens every year you are in college. The cost to attend in-state public flagship universities is over $25,000 a year, $50,000 per year for out-of-statestate universities. Most private scholarships are $1,000 or less and are only good for one year.
2. There are plenty of free college scholarship websites. Some will do a better job of narrowing results to your qualifications while others will have outdated scholarships. Use a combination of websites to maximize your chances of finding scholarships. If they boast “No Essay Required” they may be a scholarship sweepstakes, a form of marketing and lead generation. It will be best to create a separate email for your scholarship searches. 3. Check your high school counselor’s office, your parent’s workplace, and the local paper’s community section for local scholarships. You will have a better chance earning local scholarships. They aren’t as easy to find so not as many people will be applying for them. 4. Most private scholarships will be for one year only. Pay attention to scholarships that are multi-year or allow you to apply and win more than once. 5. Private scholarships must be declared to your college financial aid office. This can affect your financial aid award from federal and institutional sources being reduced. 6. To get the most out of private scholarships, be organized, apply for as many as possible, as early as possible. Track deadlines, requirements, and recommendations in one place. Give yourself time to write the essays and also give your teachers plenty of time to write your letter of recommendations. Every student should try to find and apply for scholarships. Just be realistic about the effort needed and the potential outcome. And remember, if you really want to make a dent finding money for college, the best time spent will be used towards targeting schools that are more likely to offer financial aid or merit scholarships. And just like the research for finding private scholarships, the earlier you start the better.

How To Replace Madness With Magic By Elaine Gibson he new year is here – a time filled with hopes, dreams and promises of what lies ahead.

It is amazing how just a few gentile, easy activities can have a huge impact. Some of my favorite healthy tips are… Ditch and Switch. Ditch the refined foods and switch them with healthier options. For example, instead of using refined white flour and/or sugar, use almond flour or coconut sugar instead. Look for sprouted options. There are many alternatives to choose from, and you can most definitely find choices you will love – and I bet you nobody will even notice! Fresh Herbs and Spices. You can really dress up a meal by adding fresh herbs and spices. It’s incredibly affordable and simple to keep a small, fresh herb garden growing in your kitchen window. My favs are mint, kelp and dill. There are incredible health properties in many of the herbs and spices we use and love. They are beneficial for our health and a strong immune system. Cinnamon and turmeric are very popular. Experiment and find a place for them in your recipes anywhere you can! Use Different Plateware. Staying on track with my health goals is getting creative with portion control. Instead of using dinner-sized plates, which we tend to fill, use smaller plates. Use a mid-sized saucer or salad plate for your dinner plate, and then go back for seconds if needed. A lot of the overeating that we do is mindless, habitual eating because it’s in front of us and we were taught to clean our plates. Taking this temptation away helps tremendously, and you’ll very quickly learn how much you need to feel satisfied – I guarantee it is less than you think.

Chronic Inflammation 101 By Nicole Ann Gustavson
stressful life, poor diet, and toxic people, we would all happily trade with a more balanced existence filled with nourishment, inner growth and conscious living. Sure, why not? But, our bodies simply weren’t designed to contend with the daily barrage of toxins, infectious agents and stress, seen and unseen, that our go-go lifestyles tend to encompass. And, the connection between diet and lifestyle, chronic inflammation and disease, is very real, and our daily choices all have either a pro- or anti-inflammatory effect. What you eat, drink, and think can create a cascade of inflammation in your body. When your body hits an inflammatory overload, your defense system gets so overwhelmed and confused that your well-meaning immune system turns on itself, destroying healthy cells, tissue, and, well, everything else too. Chronic inflammation arises from an immune system response that’s out of control. When inflammation as an immune response is never "shut off," so to speak, the constant production of immune cells can do permanent damage. Over time, chronic inflammation wears out your immune system, leading to chronic diseases and other health issues, including cancer, heart disease, Type 2 Diabetes, stroke, asthma, autoimmune diseases (i.e., Crohn’s), allergies, irritable bowel syndrome, arthritis, osteoporosis, and premature aging. The Culprits Causes of chronic inflammation are countless and numerous factors trigger them. But we are not helpless. Major risk to long-term health and well being remains within our control.

Common allergens like casein and gluten (proteins found in dairy and wheat) are quick to spark the inflammatory cascade. Enough About Diet, What Else? Rest and Recovery: Your body is hard at work repairing and restoring you on a cellular level while you sleep. If you’re exhausted, you’re cheating your immune system, which means it needs to kick into high gear — chronic inflammation. Psychological Stress: Persistent stress takes a steady toll on your immune system, your adrenals, and your central nervous system. Stress also produces more of the hormone cortisol. Cortisol directly influences your insulin levels and metabolism, also playing a role in chronic inflammation. With inflammation, painful emotional baggage, negative thoughts and internalized feelings are as harmful as physical stress, but often overlooked. Focusing on stress reduction and safe care, whether it’s through more sleep, yoga, meditation, long walks, less technology or a much-needed vacation could save you! Toxins: Reduce toxins in your food, home and personal care products. Cut down your exposure by eating organic foods whenever possible and choosing non-toxic personal care and cleaning products.
First, we can crowd out inflammatory foods by adding a variety of plantbased whole foods to your diet. These foods will flood your body with the vitamins, minerals, cancer-fighting phytochemicals, antioxidants and fiber it needs to recover from chronic inflammation. Meanwhile, foods to avoid like the plague include: Common Vegetable Oils and Trans Fats; Refined Grains; and Refined Sugar (and other foods with high glycemic values). Secondly, listen to your GUT! With your gut holding approximately 6070 percent of your immune system, it’s a great place to start reducing inflammation. The promotion of healthy gut flora with probiotics is an excellent start. Third, as we get older, foods that never bothered us before, like dairy and wheat, may trigger chronic low-grade indigestion or other seemingly

How To Beat Holiday Stress, Anxiety & Depression

he holidays are again upon us. It’s time for holiday parties with family and friends. The holidays can also be a difficult time for older adults who may be dealing with the loss of loved ones and past traditions. Many factors, including unrealistic expectations, financial pressures, and excessive commitments can cause stress and anxiety at holiday time. Fortunately, experts have found that you don’t have to let all of the pressures of this holiday season overwhelm you to the point of intensifying or causing depression. Those suffering from any type of holiday anxiety, depression, or stress can benefit from increased social support during this time of year. Counseling or support groups can also be beneficial. Below are a few tips to take control of your life and emotions during this holiday season. •
Give attention to your own health. Take care of your health by getting plenty of sleep, eating nutritiously, and staying physically active. Go out for a short walk and breathe some fresh air.

Setting realistic goals and expectations, reaching out to friends, sharing tasks with family members, finding inexpensive ways to enjoy yourself, and helping others are all ways to help beat holiday stress
•
One of the best things you can do is take time to truly listen to the older adults under your care. It recommends taking 15 minutes each
day to spend just listening to them. It is important for them to be able to talk about their feelings and to know that they’re being heard. •
Do something different. Don’t get hung up on what the holidays are supposed to be like and how you’re supposed to feel.
•
Don’t limit the good things you can accomplish. It doesn’t always take money to have a good time. Enjoy this holiday as if it were your last!
•
Keep your expectations modest and lean on your support system. Be honest with yourself about what you can do.

mpact and how we affect others Impact is a series of actions designed to have a specific outcome. Wanting a positive impact is about a strong desire to affect another or others in a meaningful way. Some of the ways that we impact others are not planned. I recently got a note on Facebook from someone that I grew up with. She wrote to me about how my friends and I were Girl Scouts when she and her friends were Brownies. She and her friends looked up to me and my friends and tried to be like us and that we were all very nice to them. I give this example, not because it's about me, but because we all have some kind of impact that we are not aware of. I strive for a positive impact on others’ lives.

Every baseball coach that my son has had (over 13 seasons of playing Reston-Herndon Little League) has left a positive impact on his life and across the Reston-Herndon communities. Women’s Crusade For Equality
Will it ever end . . .? What will it take . . .? What are you willing to do . . .? Nationally renowned historian and author Edith Mayo ends her suffrage presentations with these simple, but profound words: “Visibility in the past; empowerment in the present.” The Turning Point Suffragist Memorial Association’s purpose is to educate, inspire and empower present and future generations to remain vigilant in the quest for equal rights for all – not just women, but equality for women would be a great place to start! The Suffragist Memorial will honor the five million women - from every state, creed, race and nationality - who fought 72 years to win enfranchisement; the Turning Point Institute will provide age-appropriate insight, training and skills to catalyst young women into leadership roles aimed at achieving equality. Without the Equal Rights Amendment American women are not equal under the Constitution according to the late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, but having the memorial as a stop on The Constitution Trail in Virginia will place it among prominent, well-known historical sites to raise visibility toward such empowerment as Ms. Mayo advocates. Without the right to vote, women – YOU – would not have been able to advance in education, employment, wealth, civil rights, business ownership, parental rights, etc. Turning Point has 25 months to raise $2,000,000 to construct the memorial in time for the 100th anniversary of certification of the 19th Amendment that gave all American women the right to vote.
