Blackberry Daze
A
By Ruth P. Watson and Thomas W. Jones II Lyrics by Thomas w. Jones II Original music by William Knowles
t the end of “The Great War”, a small Virginia town is rocked by secrets and betrayal as Herman Camm, a seductive gambler, weaves his magic on the lives of three unsuspecting women, Mae Lou, her daughter Carrie, and Pearl, a blues singer at the local juke joint. TC Carson (Living Single) and Roz White (Black Pearl Sings!) lead an exciting ensemble of Washington’s most eclectic and exciting talent. This musical adaptation of Ruth P. Watson’s romantic mystery thriller (Blackberry Days of Summer) is a world premiere with Thomas W. Jones II (Three Sistahs, Bessie’s Blues) direction and William Knowles’ dazzling period score, making this an exciting new work on the American Theatre landscape.

A new school year, cooler days, and the perfect weather for brisk morning walks while saying goodbye to mosquito filled evenings, the beach and hot summer weather. Autumn in September and October, especially in Northern VA, is colorfully beautiful and grand in its splendor. We fully experience that beauty each year as the trees change and leaves eventually cover pastures, farms, vineyards and our own backyards in the Common wealth.

National Ovarian Cancer Coalition Overview
istory The idea for the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition began to take form in 1991, starting as a grassroots organization founded by passionate ovarian cancer advocates and Survivors in Boca Raton, FL. The organization was incorporated in 1995, and the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition (NOCC) has since been committed to raising awareness of ovarian cancer in communities across the country and to providing education, support and hope for women with ovarian cancer and for their families. The NOCC has established itself as an important national advocate for patients and families fighting back against ovarian cancer. The mission of the NOCC is to save lives by fighting tirelessly to prevent and cure ovarian cancer, and to improve the quality of life for survivors. For 25 years, the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition, an IRS designated 501(c)3 organization, through its more than 20 chapter offices nationwide, has been working hard in our communities to fund research, raise awareness, and promote education about ovarian cancer, and improve the quality of life for Survivors. The Washington, DC Metro area chapter was founded in 2000 and has continued to grow, prosper and provide support to survivors and their families.
Our four business area/signature programmatic areas of focus are: Community Events Run/Walk to Break the Silence on Ovarian Cancer® hosted by more than 20 NOCC chapter offices in communities nationwide, raises awareness about ovarian cancer, honors Survivors, and pays tribute to those lost to the disease. Empowers our communities to take action and join the fight to Break the Silence on Ovarian Cancer® through Run/Walks nationwide. Quality of Life Faces of Hope® Supports newly diagnosed women in over 200 hospitals through our signature Faces of Hope® Tote bags and provides vital information and resources. Earlier Awareness Take Early Action and Live® Promotes early detection through a variety of educational initiatives, branded publications and mass media campaigns including Speaker’s Bureau, Why Teal? and the production and distribution of educational literature about ovarian cancer, treatment, and quality of life issues. Research Invests funds in the first ever Ovarian Cancer Research Dream Team through Stand Up To Cancer and partner Ovarian Cancer Research Fund Alliance.
National Ovarian Cancer Coalition's mission is to save lives by fighting tirelessly to prevent and cure ovarian cancer and to improve the quality of life for survivors. What is Ovarian Cancer? Ovarian cancer is a disease in which, depending on the type and stage of the disease, malignant (cancerous) cells are found inside, near, or on the outer layer of the ovaries. An ovary is one of two small, almond-shaped organs located on each side of the uterus that store eggs, or germ cells, and produce female hormones estrogen and progesterone. What is the general outlook for women diagnosed with ovarian cancer? In women ages 35-74, ovarian cancer is the fifth leading cause of cancer-related deaths. An estimated one woman in 75 will develop ovarian cancer during her lifetime. The American Cancer Society estimates that there will be over 22,280 new cases of ovarian cancer diagnosed this year and that more than 14,240 women will die from ovarian cancer this year. When one is diagnosed and treated in the earliest stages, the five-year survival rate is over 90 percent. Due to ovarian cancer's non-specific symptoms and lack of early detection tests, about 20 percent of all cases are found early, meaning in stage I or II. If caught in stage III or higher, the survival rate can be as low as 28 percent. Due to the nature of the disease, each woman diagnosed with ovarian cancer has a different profile and it is impossible to provide a general prognosis.

Advanced Micro - Needling Safe And Natural For All Skin Tones By D. Dennis Faludi, M.D., FABOS
w
hat is Collagen PIN Micro-Needling? Collagen PIN micro-needling is a breakthrough treatment in skin resurfacing. It is based on the use of rapidly vibrating tiny needles to create micro-channels in the skin, a process that stimulates your skin’s natural ability to heal itself without the use of chemicals or surgery. The small channels in the epidermis close very quickly and the skin’s healing process increases production of collagen and elastin, two proteins that are essential in keeping the skin soft, resilient, and toned. This results in a thicker dermis and softened wrinkles or scars. Additionally, while the micro-channels are open during the treatment, allowing therapeutic creams and serums to be absorbed deep into the skin. Micro-needling is commonly used to rejuvenate overall skin tone and texture, and to treat acne scarring, other face and body scars, fine lines and wrinkles, enlarged pores, and pigmentation resulting from sun damage and aging. The most frequent requested areas for microneedling treatment are the face, neck, chest, and arms.
The cost for micro-needling treatments is reasonable, it can be used on any part of the body, and it does not require any special preparation or downtime. What can I expect from a Collagen PIN procedure? Dr. Faludi will first apply a numbing cream, followed by a cleansing and application of hyaluronic acid serum. Then he will begin to gently pass the collagen pin with tiny vibrating needles over your treatment area for a total of 10-15 minutes. Once the procedure is complete, he will again apply the hyaluronic acid serum and provide you with a kit of special skincare products to use for the next 3 days. For several hours following the procedure, your skin will look and feel as though you have a mild sunburn. You may begin wearing makeup on the treatment area the following day – mineral based foundation is recommended for the first week because it prevents bacterial growth. Do the treatments hurt? This is an excellent question! With the numbing cream, most patients report little to no sensation during the procedure. Some describe feeling as though a cat’s tongue is moving over their skin.
Why has Micro-Needling become so popular? Because micro-needling relies on a natural biological process, it causes far less trauma to the skin than dermal rolling and other ablative treatments, and it can be safely used on all skin tones. This is especially important for people with darker skin, who are at greater risk for burning and skin discoloration from most chemical peel and laser treatments.
How is the Collagen PIN different from dermal rollers? The Collagen PIN has several important technological improvements over dermal rollers, which were the previous generation of needling devices. With the Collagen PIN, the clinician is able to adjust the needle penetration depth throughout the procedure. This is important because skin thickness varies widely in different areas of the face and body. Additionally, the needles are used for only a single treatment, which means that they are cleaner and sharper than those on a dermal roller, which are used for multiple treatments. Finally, the small area of the needling surface, its vertical action, and rapid vibration allow for greater precision and significantly less damage to the epidermis than dermal rolling. Dr. Faludi takes all new patients through a thorough complimentary consultation to discuss their aesthetic goals and design individual treatment plans. Additionally, he personally performs all procedures at the Aesthetic Medical Center.

SottoPelle
®
Hormone Replacement Therapy By Linda E. Coleman, MD Coleman Natural Health & Wellness SottoPelle® is a science-based, safe and effective bioidentical
hormone replacement therapy for men and women. Our method goes beyond just treating symptoms. SottoPelle® restores the hormonal balance it needs for optimum function. Unlike pills, patches, creams and other methods, SottoPelle® uses a unique form of pellet therapy that works around the clock for 3 months or longer. No mess. No hassle. No rollercoaster surging and plummeting of hormone levels. And it is the only hormone replacement therapy that responds when the body needs more. Research shows that testosterone and estrogen play important roles in your overall health. They support cardiovascular health, bone health, brain health, sexual vitality and many other functions. When menopause or andropause occur, hormone production fades. Without sufficient levels of testosterone and/or estradiol, the body’s systems become depleted, out of balance and simply cannot function well. Your body ages and the possibility of agingrelated disease looms. Many men and women feel like they’ve lost something they can’t regain—their quality of life. Today’s trends in medicine focus on the preventive and proactive. Staying healthy into old age depends on many things including lifestyle and genetics. It also makes perfect sense to replenish what the body needs. That’s why we supplement vitamins and minerals. It’s also why we use hormone replacement therapy to restore internal equilibrium. Linda Coleman, M.D. Coleman Primary Care 2 Pidgeon Hill Drive, Suite 400 Sterling, VA 20165 (703) 430-7090
SottoPelle’s unique hormone replacement therapy relies on science, not guesswork. Our pellet therapy incorporates many features that other hormone replacement methods lack, even other pellet therapies.

We use the highest quality bioidentical pellet implants for our therapy. We apply a proprietary, web-based application for accurate dosing We employ a unique pellet insertion procedure to ensure a steady, consistent dose. We’ve been doing this a long time. We are experts at what we do.
SottoPelle® bioidentical hormone replacement not only
relieves symptoms like hot flashes, mood swings, anxiety, sleep disturbances, lack of sex drive and others, it also reestablishes vitality and well-being. Working in partnership with your body, our hormone replacement therapy recreates healthy balance. This, in turn, provides essential support to your body’s vital organs and systems.

How To Heal After A Reveal: "You May Have Cancer"
a
By Dr. Jacquie Hood Martin
t the moment you learn a piece of information that changes your life, what is the first response? I had this conversation the other day with VA Woman publisher, Dorri C. Scott and she poignantly asked me when I completed a life changing moment story with her.“How do you respond to something like that?” The ‘something like that’ was the day I was told by my doctor that I needed to come in for immediate cryosurgery. I had an abnormal pap smear and there was a concern about cancer of the cervix. Then at age 23, the word ‘cancer’ was scary and mind blowing. I had a thousand questions and even more scenarios that ran through my mind. It was at age 33 when I was told that a biopsy would be needed to a lump in my breast. It is strangely amazing how a moment such as these can provide your existence with a level of clarity beyond your comprehension. A moment that you ask yourself long after the doctors report has settled in your brain “Is this new knowledge handling me?” or “Am I handling this new knowledge and incorporating it into my life?” This and other profound moments are what I call “game changers.” A game changing moment causes you to have pause on what you know, who taught it to you, what others knew, when they knew, how you think, feel, react, and so on. I can say it is easy to want to go back to bed and bury your head under the covers, and not even deal with the circumstance at hand. It is becoming all too common for people of faith to check out on life. Depressed. Despondent. Disengaged. These are three words that negate our ability to hear God speak, and rely on Him to move us from a state of despair. A single diagnosis can change your life forever. When our
emotions take over our thinking, it is difficult at best to physically respond to anything happening around us. And sometimes what happens to us. In order to heal from what has been revealed in this situation, here are a few life applications that helped me, and I pray will help you on your journey. 1. Hear what the other person is saying: Sometimes when we are given information that is confusing to us, we have a tendency to not listen. Not listening cancels out our ability to inquire about the best options and treatment. 2. Take time to process your true feelings: If I didn’t know anything else, I knew there was no time like the present to address the situation. Schedule the appointment and deal with it. 3. Accept it is ok if your feelings are still the same: Puzzled. Bewildered. Uncertain. Upset. The key is to be open for treatment. Healing will not begin unless your heart is willing Many people around you may question your ‘faith status’ when you refuse to talk to God, blend in with your peers, or even participate in your own healing process when going through a reveal process. There is no denying the reality of our pain. The feelings are real. The hurt is real. The disbelief is real. Once you have a revealing moment, how you recover will mean the difference between learning from the experience or possibly retreating altogether. Be open and honest with yourself and know that a positivity and proactive living will take you far in your journey to heal the mind, body, and Spirit.
Color Your World… Re-energize Your Life!
When we talk about an energy exchange, think of a brainstorming session where ideas are shared, supported and grow into something even bigger than the original. It is not the normal type of energy we’re used to hearing about; the energy responsible for powering our cars, homes and smartphones. It’s the energy between living things that makes the world alive and vibrant and a great place to be… most of the time.

ost of you would like to experience each day with lightness, happiness and trust. I know I do. You might manage to do that some of the time, but often feel either sad and regretful of what has happened in the past, or worried, anxious and fearful of what might happen in the future. Your thought process tricks you and you are caught up in a negative spiral that impacts your quality of life. You are not living in the NOW. The irony is that you may feel all of this is out of your control, when in fact, you are creating it. No one else creates your thoughts or feelings. Ultimately you have the power to un-create what is not serving you well. Michel de Montaigne said it well when he said, “My life has been full of terrible misfortunes, most of which never happened.” Many times my clients say, “But you don’t understand. I didn’t do anything. They did it to me. I cannot help but feel this way.” That victim mentality does not serve them well and creates a “habit” of blame, distrust, unhappiness and regret. So what can be done? The way the mind works depends on past experience. We all take in information from the world and filter it though those experiences. That is why two people can be talking about the same thing and see it from two very different viewpoints. Reality is socially constructed. Just look at the upcoming POTUS election if you have doubts! Like changing a camera lens, we can decide on the view we desire, wide-angle or zoom. We just need the tools to slow ourselves down and reframe our thinking. We need to live in the NOW.
Save The Date!
The following tools may be useful in moving from fear of the future or regret from the past to the NOW.
Use your feelings (sadness, anxiousness or unhappiness) to help figure out what thought drives those feelings. Typically, it is something, “I won’t have enough money this month.”, “My boyfriend will probably leave me.”,“I am not good enough to apply for that job.” Once you have identified the thought, ask yourself to come up with a counter thought that is more productive such as, “I can make it through the month if I am careful.”, “We are having a great time and my boyfriend says how much he cares for me all the time.”,“I have no real idea what the company is expecting, but I have a wealth of experience that may serve them well.” These thoughts will help you get back to the NOW. There is no need to fear the future (it does not exist) or regret the past (it is over and done). Take a deep breath and examine your new feelings. Move! Do something with your body to get out of your head. It can be exercise of some type that you really need to think about to execute. When you are putting your thoughts on what you are doing at the moment, you are living in the NOW. Practice gratitude. Being grateful is a great way to replace a negative thought with more positive energy. Once you start living in the NOW you become lighter, more focused, playful and trusting. Happiness follows close behind. You have the possibility to “provide new ways of thinking to create new ways of doing.” If you are interested in learning to live in the NOW, attend the Women’s Renewal Retreat on November 5-6, 2016 at the Goodstone Inn, Middleburg, VA. The retreat is designed and facilitated by Dr. Wild. Retreat information can be found on the API website (www.alternateperspectives.org.).

Personal Ovarian and Breast Cancer Stories Tracy Robinson’s Story
Cervical Cancer
s
By Tracy Robinson Photo by: Cyndy Porter Photography and Style Make up: Ayesha Pough
eptember 3, 2016 was the day that my world was changed forever. I went in for what was a simple surgery to remove a cyst and woke up with a full hysterectomy, appendectomy and ovarian cancer. Tears rolled down my face as I came in and out of anesthesia. Why? Why me? It took me a few days but then I realized that there was a reason. This silent killer attacked one very vocal and determined woman and I wasn’t about to lay around and do nothing. I get asked a lot how I keep such a good spirit. I truly believe that positive thinking is healing for the body mind and soul. Sure, I have bad days just like everyone else. Cancer/Chemo took a lot from me but I survived and am here to make some noise.
Here are a few things I learned as a cancer patient: 1. We are more concerned about the people around us and how our illness is impacting them.
2. We feel guilty that we didn’t take advantage of every last minute in our lives.
3. Although we appreciate all the
love and generosity we want to be treated normal when you interact with us.
4. Friends, you need to understand that we will never be the same again. We may think differently, sometimes act differently and most definitely view life entirely differently.
5. Chemo Brain is REAL! For
me, I went through phases of what seemed like blackouts. I nearly drove my kids, friends and co-workers insane.

I believe that my mind, the love of my family and friends and pure determination to beat this cancer played a major part in my survival.
What keeps me motivated and inspired? • I believe that if you change your thinking then you will change your world. • Knowing that my continuing fight may just save my children and yours as well. • The tears and gratitude from survivors and families of those that passed. • The feeling of 300 professional peers giving me a standing ovation. • My biggest inspirations, Makenzie and Hunter, telling me how proud they are of me for everything that has happened and what I have made of it. Maybe you are a survivor, a loved one of a survivor or just someone that wants to make a difference. I challenge you to get involved in a cause - don’t wait to have a reason! One in every three people are affected by cancer. It doesn’t take a lot of money to be supportive, just the desire and passion to make a difference. I am honored to be able to share my story with you and hope that you not only gain awareness but also inspiration to never give up. Whatever your struggle is, know that your inner strength is greater than you could ever imagine. To learn more about my journey, please read my blog: TracRobinson.wordpress.com

Carol Barbe’s Story
When Cancer Touched My Family By Carol Barbe Photo by: Cyndy Porter Photography and Style Make up: Ayesha Pough

n May of 2009, while showering, I felt a lump in my breast. I was scheduled to have my annual mammogram the following week, so I informed the radiology doctor, but it did not show up on the mammogram. The doctor also did a sonogram and said he didn’t think it was anything to worry about. He never suggested I get a biopsy, never suggested I see a doctor for further follow up, just to watch it. Watch it?! Watch it grow and kill me! Fortunately, I had also been seeing a breast care surgical doctor, Dr. Virginia Chiantella, for breast calcifications. Obviously concerned, she told me she would perform a biopsy of the lump and send it out for the results. She also sent me for an MRI which showed two additional lumps that did not show up on the mammogram! On June 4, 2009, I was scheduled to have a stereotactic biopsy on the calcifications and went to the hospital for the procedure. Even then, I was waiting for biopsy results, which is when the doctor walked in and said I had cancer. Dr. Chiantella was so compassionate, assuring me she would be with me through every step. From that moment on I took charge and started to get things going for myself. I cried myself to sleep every night. When I finally had a treatment plan and diagnosis, I courageously moved forward.

It’s been 7 years! There’s not a day that goes by I am not reminded of my journey as the scars from the surgery and radiation are ever so visible and present, however I’m grateful. They remind me of my journey, the life I want to live, my purpose to continue to help others and make a difference. I see Dr. Chiantella annually and my oncologist Dr. Rajendra every four months. Each year it doesn’t get easier when I go for my mammogram. I get so nervous, irritable, anxious, and can’t sleep for days leading up to the mammogram, however it doesn’t stop me from getting it done! In 2014, my husband Phil was diagnosed with esophageal cancer, so I became a caregiver. For six months I took care of him. He couldn’t eat and could hardly drink; he had a feeding tube, big time pain meds, chemo, radiation and then the life changing and saving surgery which we are so thankful for. I learned being a caregiver you are given strength you didn’t know you had and you must remember to also take care of yourself. Today, together, we are thrivers, we are grateful and we remain hopeful.

On August 1st 2015 I went to the Fair Lakes urgent care for a Distended stomach, Inability to eat and other problems. Thank god for Dr. Freeman who recognized immediately this was a serious condition. I was sent immediately to Fair Oaks Hospital. A CT Scan was done and I was diagnosed with a 13 cm tumor on my ovaries. I was rushed by ambulance to Fairfax Hospital because my tumor had burst. I was in surgery on August 5th for a complete hysterectomy and debulking and was diagnosed with a rare form of ovarian cancer Carcinosarcoma of the ovaries - a very aggressive form of ovarian cancer. I have completed my chemo and my most recent scan was clear. I walked in the Ovarian Walk on May 21st and I am looking to help other women by sharing my story. In early July I had gone to the doctor and told them my symptoms but was told to take a probiotic.

I want women to know if doesn’t seem right get a second opinion!!! Know the symptoms of Ovarian Cancer!
What is Ovarian Cancer? Ovarian cancer is a disease in which, depending on the type and stage of the disease, malignant (cancerous) cells are found inside, near, or on the outer layer of the ovaries. An ovary is one of two small, almondshaped organs located on each side of the uterus that store eggs, or germ cells, and produce female hormones estrogen and progesterone.
Due to ovarian cancer’s non-specific symptoms and lack of early detection tests, about 20 percent of all cases are found early, meaning in stage I or II. If caught in stage III or higher, the survival rate can be as low as 28 percent. Due to the nature of the disease, each woman diagnosed with ovarian cancer has a different profile and it is impossible to provide a general prognosis.

Personal Ovarian and Breast Cancer Stories
Walking with My Friends Through it All By Dr. Dominique Adkins
t
y h t r u M Nandini
his September marks the start of Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month and the 11 year anniversary of my friendship with my friend and cancer warrior. When I met Nandini Murthy we had several instant commonalities: our love for fashion & TV shows on Bravo, being only children that are very close to our families, and our inherent ability to put others first. Nandini’s inquisitive, fiery, and fun personality mixed with my energetic & engaging spirit made for a dynamic duo. As young bright students the world was ours to conquer. Through our friendship we have had number of adventures and memories that I believe have made us strong, intelligent, and resilient women. Factors which have contributed to making the strong and inspiring cancer “Walking with a friend warrior I see in Nandini. in the dark is better than walking alone in the light”. Three years ago Nandini, was diagnosed with an aggressive form of ovarian cancer. At that time it was determined to be treatable and she had a high survival rate. Sadly, there have been several setbacks in her treatment over the last three years. These obstacles did not stop the warrior in Nandini. She instead has drawn strength and courage to continue fighting and bring awareness to ovarian cancer. As her friend I am grateful that she trusted me to be a part of her warrior journey because it has taught me three invaluable lessons.
1
Make time to cherish the time with those you care about and love. Do not let cancer be the only reason you make time. Make a full hearted effort to spend time with those you love now. Each day, I realize how precious life is and no longer take for granted the time we each have on this earth.
2
Listen; as a licensed professional counselor, I am fortunate to be equipped to support individuals through a variety of crisis and listening is always the first step. I remember the night I saw Nandini after she was diagnosed. We walked in circles outside her house with tears running down our faces. In that moment, I listened to her pain and confusion and remembered the Hellen Keller quote; “walking with a friend in the dark is better than walking alone in the light”. Nandini needed me as friend to provide a safe space to vent, be vulnerable, and process. Together we navigated what it meant to be a cancer warrior and a friend.
3
Use your resources, whether it is a medical doctor, a therapist, a spiritual leader, religious/spiritual beliefs, friends, or family. Go see your medical doctors regularly because preventative health is essential. Additionally, counseling services from a mental health professional or a spiritual leader are also extremely helpful in maintaining our overall well-being.
Finally, lean on your family, friends, and faith for support. I am sad to share....NANDINI suffered from a stroke on Saturday, August 13. She was to be a Cover WOMAN for the September - October current issue. I visited with her family and friends in ICU a the hospital Monday Aug 22. The family shared with VA WOMAN that NANDINI would be taken off of life support that same day. Gracious, with dignity and much gratitude, the family was honored for the time we spent together and overjoyed with the story shared. A special thank you to Nandin’s parents and Pauline and William Adkins who initially introduced me to NANDINI almost a year ago at Dr. Adkins’ graduation. Finally... Thank YOU for joining me to wish NANDINI’s family members and friends, peace and comfort at a most difficult time. - Publisher, Dorri C. Scott virginia

Personal Ovarian and Breast Cancer Stories
Warrior Woman
Kelly Duckworth One year later.... By Kelly Duckworth
a
whole year has passed since my beautiful survivor-sister Nancy Barbour and I were featured on the cover of Virginia Woman, and I couldn’t be more proud to say that I’m still here, smiling, healthy, happy, and thriving! The past year has been one of learning. I’ve maintained a healthy body by exercising and following a (mostly) healthy diet. I’m learning- with some gentle nudging/ reminders from my friends- that rest and sleep are extremely important factors in health maintenance and physical safety. There is no shame in a nap or going to bed early. There is no shame in having a glass of wine with dinner. There is no shame in blowing off some house chores to go have fun! Life is about finding the happy medium. Twelve years ago, when my late husband passed away just weeks just before our son was born, I recall sitting on the floor, in tears, thinking “I don’t know what to do, I seriously feel like I’m going to go nuts.” That week, I received one of many sympathy cards, but one in particular one stood out. The pre-inscribed message in the card said “Just remember, the mightiest Oak Tree was once just a nut that held its ground.” This quote resonated within me, and it still comes to mind when I need to feel strength. I’m drawn to pictures of Oak Trees as they remind me that I once felt like I was going to go nuts, but now I am so much stronger. Each and every day my strength grows and I will always aspire to be that mighty Oak. This year, I’ve been blessed with the opportunity to travel, and I’ve learned something: Life is truly a journey. Not just the type of journey where you plug point A and point B into your GPS and drive, but the type of journey filled with twists/turns, bumps, roadblocks, and occasionally getting completely

lost! On each journey, I’ve learned that it is imperative to stay calm, be acutely aware of my surroundings, weigh my options, and make appropriate decisions based on that information. Such is the same with real life. The ultimate goal is to arrive safely at a destination that reflects the real you. I have developed a passion for mission trips, having recently traveled to the Dominican Republic on a medical mission trip. Next up is India and Nepal in late October for another medial mission trip, and my heart races with excitement each time I think about the upcoming journey. While in the D.R., I had the opportunity to serve over a thousand children and adults needing basic medical care. Many of these people had nothing- no roof over their head, no access to food, potable water, medical care, or even basic safety- but they all had a smile. They took nothing for granted. As you travel on you own life journey, I encourage you to embrace the twists, turns, bumps, and roadblocks. Learn all you can from every person you encounter. You might meet some nuts along the way, but you might also take a detour down a sunlit path lined with glorious mighty Oak Trees. When you take that detour, take a seat under that big Oak and bask in the glory of who you have become.
Be grateful, not resentful, for the challenges you have been given. Be you. Be strong. Be blessed. educate. empower. inspire. inform.

Personal Ovarian and Breast Cancer Stories
STILL Don’t be Afraid of the Answer!

hat a difference a year makes. For those that were introduced to me in this magazine a year ago, you already know that my story about breast cancer is one of early detection. I was diagnosed with early stage breast cancer a month after my 50th birthday in 2013. It was definitely a blow to my otherwise healthy life. After a partial mastectomy that included breast reconstruction (yep, I’m half the size I used to be), I went through radiation. I was blessed that chemotherapy was not needed so from the outside, I looked the same. No hair loss, no weight loss (unfortunately), no extended hospital visits. Only a few family and friends were made aware and they were my support system – that is, until the article a year ago. I thank the wonderful, beautiful publisher of Virginia Woman Magazine, Dorri Scott, for her vision to educate women and let us tell our stories. I now receive texts, emails and calls from friends telling me that they made their annual mammogram appointments. It is a badge of honor and courage to make sure that you go every year, without pause. My story last year focused on not being afraid of the answer from your doctor. I humbly admit that after I went through breast cancer, I was afraid to continue with my annual mammograms. I didn’t want to know the answer, good or bad. After two years of ‘skipping’ the annual appointment, I had the courage to again pick up the annual ritual in March of this year, at the encouragement of

my general physician, Dr. Natasha Simmons-Wyllie. It was a happy day when I received the call that all was okay for another year. Lesson learned: Don’t put it off because early detection is the key to survival. I am thankful that my health continues to improve every day. I have had several speaking engagements where I’ve been able to tell my story. I always add in the part about seeking emotional help because breast cancer is devastating to women. Our breasts are such a major part of our lives, beginning at a young age when we either become a C cup real fast, or stay an A cup for the rest of our lives. I went from a D cup to a B cup after surgery. I still look down sometimes and think, “What happened to my prized possessions?” The biggest difference in my life is that I am very happy to unsnap my bra at the end of the day and let the girls run free. I know, too much information, but I am amongst friends! I’m still healing, both emotionally and physically, but the scars are a constant reminder of what I went through. At the end of the day, I am thankful, grateful, faithful and all the other ‘fuls that came with early detection. I again encourage everyone to not be afraid of the answer. Make that appointment today!

What You Should Know About Mammograms
information provided by Care First –Blue Cross BlueShield www.carefirst.com
Many women are afraid of mammograms but having one is definitely worthwhile. In fact, it can even save a woman’s life. If the test is normal, you will feel better knowing that you are OK. If however; there is a problem, it is better to know early. Regular mammograms can detect breast cancer BEFORE it spreads. Treatment works best when the cancer is found early. Make an appointment to see your Doctor for a mammogram if you fall under any of these categories that pose a higher risk: • • • • • •
Your Mother OR sister has/had breast cancer You have Jewish ancestors from Eastern Europe (A certain gene is carried among this group) You had your first menstrual period before age 12 You NEVER had children OR you had your first child after age 30 You had radiation treatments to your chest area You have a lump, nipple, discharge, breast pain or dimpling of skin on the breast
Breast cancer is NOT a death sentence when detected early. Detection at later stages may be managed with all the new technologies and treatment available. It is never too late to be evaluated and undergo treatment. There is life after the diagnosis. FACE YOUR FEAR and TAKE CHARGE!!
When should I have a mammogram?
Starting at age 40 women should have a mammogram every 1 – 2 years. If you feel a lump, see or have questions about anything unusual in your breast contact your health care provider.
How do I get ready for my mammogram? • Make the appointment for 1 week after your period • When the breasts are less sensitive. • Wear a shirt with shorts, pants or skirt. • This makes it easier to undress from the waist up. • Do not wear deodorant, perfume, lotion or powder under arms or on your breasts on the day of your appointment. These products make shadows on the mammogram.

Are You Ready To Create An Extraordinary Life?
b
By Elaine Gibson eginning my mornings with a cup of warm alkaline ionized water with lemon and cayenne pepper has been part of my morning routine for a few years.
While this is still true, I am realizing that it is just not enough. It is not just about the wonderful warm water for my body, but rather about setting intentions for a wonderful healthy and extraordinary life. It is very easy for me to emerge from my bedroom and go straight to my computer and begin to review new emails and tasks of the day. Yikes! This has been exhausting! While in the fight of my life to beat Stage IV Cancer without traditional protocols, I learned that enhancing my immune system is paramount! Dr Warburg, Nobel Prize recipient in 1931 for his important discovery that the root cause of cancer is oxygen deficiency, which creates an acidic state in the human body. Cancer cells are anaerobic (do not breathe oxygen). This information is so clear that I knew incorporating it into my life was right up my alley. Every day I ask myself one question:
I believe, with all my heart and soul, that a high raw alkaline lifestyle is: the foundation for a strong immune system. the foundation for preventing and beating disease. the connection between wholesome discoveries, hope and optimism. the change that creates the true healing, inside and out. It is the key to not having to tell my children Marlo and Seth, ever again, that I have cancer. Basically, this is your pathway to Extraordinary Health and an Extraordinary Life! Every day I have my alkaline antioxidant water and green juice. 80% of my food is alkaline and 90% is raw. While my routine is at this level, it is important to begin where you are. Shoot for 50 % raw. That will be amazing and your body will thank you. Living radiantly is about making beautiful easy choices. To help you get started, here are the 7 most alkaline foods: Spinach, kale, cucumbers, broccoli, avocado, celery and bell peppers
“How do I get alkalinity and oxygen into my body today?”

Windshields: Every Car Has One… By Sereda Y. Fowlkes
i
f your windshield gets chipped or cracked, should you repair or replace it? If you drive with a chip or cracked windshield long enough, that “if “can become a when.
Regardless of where you live, your windshield may take a beating. There could be pea gravel falling from uncovered construction trucks, sanitation vehicles laying down salt and sand when the weather calls for it, and the occasional chunk of unknown debris kicked up by cars passing by. It’s amazing that windshields survive as long as they do. Consider the hot temperatures that we have had throughout this summer and just a small pebble or a pot hole at the wrong time could make for a crack ed windshield. Occasionally we get a few calls regarding a windshield that seems to break for no apparent reason evident to the customer, but more than likely its due to stress from heat, etc. Did you know…Windshield damage and replacement is such an everyday occurrence that insurance companies rarely if ever penalize you for making a windshield claim. Large and Small Repairs The good news is that smaller chips and cracks can usually be repaired by a professional for typically less than $100, according to Novus Auto Glass. A crack or chip can be safely repaired if it can be covered by a dollar bill, says Safelite Auto Glass. However, if the chip is directly in the drivers line of sight, there are more than three cracks or chips on the glass, the damage is at the edge of the windshield, or the windshield is old and covered with tiny divots, it should be replaced rather than repaired, says Safelite. If your windshield can be repaired, do it immediately. A small chip can spread across the windshield if you hit a big pothole, drive on a corrugated gravel road or make an aggressive turn. If you’re on the road away from home, a repair company can typically come to you. A reason to repair your windshield before the crack grows and the windshield must be replaced: the windshield serves as a structural part in many vehicles that contributes to the overall strength of the vehicle, according to the National Highway Traffic Administration (NHTSA). If you must replace the windshield, its strength may be compromised as the new seal may not be as strong as the factory seal. Also, even a small
opening in a new or factory seal may cause water to leak into the car, says Novus. Finding and fixing the leak can be a long-term challenge as the water may enter in one location and exit at another. Don’t, however, expect the repaired area to be as clear as the surrounding area, says Novus. You can expect to get back about 75 to 95 percent of the optical clarity. DIY Repair You may also attempt to repair the chip or crack yourself. There are many do-it-yourself repair kits available at your local auto parts store, and they typically attempt to replicate the resin injection technique of the professionals. The difference, of course, is due to the quality of the tools and materials, and training and expertise of the person administering the repair. Because these kits may not perfectly replicate a professional repair, you might want to consider using these kits on chips that are located in an inconspicuous area, like the bottom right corner of the passenger side. Remember, a key function of the repair is to prevent the crack or chip from expanding or spreading, and also to help restore some of the structural integrity of the glass. If you’re unsure about any aspect of the DIY repair process, consider hiring a professional. The Take Away: Repair if possible and logical. Replace if you must. And consider using a professional for best results. Your windshield is a protector, and good maintenance gives you the best vision for safe driving. A Big Deal: The windshield is a crucial component in preserving the structural integrity of the vehicle passenger compartment during rollovers. The reason behind the grim record of fatalities in rollover crashes is the high incidence of occupant ejection and head injuries. The windshield assists in keeping passengers inside of the car and it supports the roof, keeping it from collapsing and crushing the passengers. **We are happy to repair your windshield at no expense to you, that’s how important it is to us to keep the integrity of your car when we do not have to replace the windshield. Powers Of Attorney For Incapacity By Dawn M. Dale, Esq.
state Planning is not just about planning for the transition of wealth upon death. A good estate plan also addresses incapacity. There are many injuries and illnesses that impact cognitive function and they can develop suddenly or over time. When cognitive function is impaired, our ability to manage our personal and financial decisions is impacted. When the level of impairment increases to the point where we can no longer make informed personal and/or financial decisions, it becomes necessary to transfer this decision making authority to someone else. For the individual that has not done any planning, the process of transferring this authority to another is accomplished through a legal proceeding to identify and appoint a guardian and/or a conservator. Basically, a guardian is appointed to make decisions concerning the individual’s personal affairs such as daily living activities, medical care, education and social activities. A conservator is appointed to manage the individual’s property and financial affairs. These proceedings are a matter of public record and require proof of incapacity. Very few individuals wish to have their personal medical information shared in such a public forum. Additionally, with progressive diseases, like Alzheimer’s, proving incapacity in the early stages may not be possible. Many times, these proceedings become adversarial resulting in a family divide that can be long-lasting or even permanent. One way to avoid these proceeding is to plan ahead. Every individual over the age of 18 should have a thoughtfully designed estate plan which includes planning for potential incapacity. By identifying the appropriate individuals to make medical and financial decisions in the event of an incapacity and reflecting those decisions in carefully prepared documents, the transition of decision making authority can be simplified and stream-lined. Advance Medical Directives, Durable Financial Powers of Attorney and Living Trusts should all be considered as part of an incapacity plan. Living Trusts were discussed in the last issue. An Advance Medical Directive is a common name used for the legal document that contains the provisions of both a Living Will and a Durable Power of Attorney for Health Care Decisions. The Living Will provisions set forth your wishes regarding the use of life sustaining measures, which include artificial administration of food and water and the use of pain relieving medications, in the event you are diagnosed as terminally ill with no reasonable chance of recovery. The Durable Power of Attorney for Health Care provisions identify the person(s) you have designated to make your medical decisions for you in the event you are unable to make them on your own. This is particularly
important should you become incapacitated – either temporarily or permanently. The Durable Power of Attorney identifies the individuals (i.e., your “agent”) that you have chosen to manage your property and financial affairs and specifies the different types of decisions that can be made on your behalf. Generally, these documents grant very broad authority, but can be tailored to fit your individual situation. Additionally, they can be drafted to be effective immediately so you don’t have to wait until you are legally incapacitated before your agent can assist you with the management of your financial affairs. If you would like to discuss how to incorporate incapacity planning into your estate plan, please call to schedule a complimentary consultation.

FAFSA Season Already??!! Are You Ready??!!
w
By Luanne Lee, CCPRS, Your College Planning Coach
ait a minute. It’s not January, is it? No, its September and no, your eyes aren’t playing tricks on you. We usually contribute a FAFSA article every year for the January issue of Virginia Woman magazine. Why are we so early this year? Although it’s no longer “breaking news,” it was announced in the spring of last year the “New FAFSA” can now be filed starting as early as October 1st of your child’s senior year instead of January 1st as in years past. Are you ready? Why the big change? One reason is to make the process less confusing. Let’s look at what we used to do. You would file an estimated FAFSA in January, filing the final FAFSA several months later after you have filed your taxes, and then waiting several more weeks to sync your FAFSA and your federal tax return with the IRS Data Retrieval tool to then send the FINAL confirmed data the schools wanted…are you dizzy yet?? Starting in October of 2016 you will file the “New FAFSA” with the “Prior/ Prior Year” federal tax return. Which means for the incoming college class of 2017/18 you will file your child’s FAFSA using data from your (hopefully) already filed 2015 federal tax return. You will continue to use the current asset data on the day you file the FAFSA. Side bar, make sure you have a paper trail/statements of your accounts in the event of an audit. Since you are using a prior/prior already filed tax return, there will no longer be a 3-week delay to sync up the IRS and the FAFSA Data Retrieval Tool. You can complete all of this in one sitting and submit the FAFSA to the colleges your child is applying to. Are you ready?
The purpose of all of this is so you can find out sooner rather than later what the college is going to offer for a Financial Aid Award and whether the school will be affordable or not. Reality check: do you really think filing three months earlier is going to make that much of a difference? What you should do is to already know ahead of time what is affordable, or not, what schools will be a good fit, or not, what schools will have the major you need, or not, WAY before you file the FAFSA and WAY before your son or daughter falls in love with a school that won’t be a good fit. That way you won’t waste valuable time, effort and financial resources applying to schools you can’t afford. Another teeny weeny little wrinkle to all of this? Will your child have their list of colleges ready by October 1st? There’s no sense in submitting a FAFSA if you don’t have the schools to submit it to. There’s no sense to submit a FAFSA to schools you aren’t ready to submit applications to since they can’t make you a Financial Aid Award without your application. Are you and your child ready? If you are NOT ready, overwhelmed, frustrated, concerned and stressed out, we understand and are here to help. If you have a college bound senior your clock is ticking. Call us today. Now my biggest problem is what will I write about in January
