letter

may/june 2016

from the publisher Dear Reader,

Cyndy Porter, Photographer

As a young girl, I spent hours in my bedroom with pen in hand, journal nearby and heart open with a passion to share words. Often alone in thought and with a creative spark, I passionately wrote poetry, stories, read - a lot and studied the delivery of dancing with words to help others. A deep thinker and dreamer at heart, I saw visions of words from "my write" in books, on cards, and anything I could grab hold to as sharing through words was not a choice but instead it chose me. Muse is my music and words became my best friend. Through books I discovered - people, visited far places and sought new ideas beyond measure. Amongst my favorite authors included Edna St. Vincent Millay, Tony Morrison, Alice Walker and Zora Neale Hurston who wrote "Their Eyes Were Watching God" - a classic and favorite book of mine. Too, I discovered the late great Dr. Maya Angelou. Fortunate to have met her three times in my life, I am honored to be a part of her history and bring it to us all HERE in Loudoun County.

When you dream DREAM BIG Beyond measure, move mountains Even if only in your mind Passionately prepare Listen silently Go slowly. Nothing about haste is great Hear the wonder of your whispering heart Always after the tears Stay steady. Strong. Selfless. Show love. Believe. Become. Let Go. Be. Nothing is Impossible, NOTHING is impossible You just gotta believe. -dcs

The visionary, writer, dancer, poet, dancer and spiritual teacher - Dr. Angelou beyond measure has touched many. Honored to be a part of her legendary history, I hope you will join us, May 22 at the Fundraiser in Sterling, VA to benefit students in YEAR UP! I am honored that I was recently invited to be a part of a documentary to honor Dr. Angelou. Hallmark Cards, along with Oprah Winfrey are producing a documentary. We hope to take messages and moments from the event, share them in the documentary and again make history in Loudoun County. Please join us: a collection of Dr. Angelou's card line now secured by Hallmark Cards, including her writings, books and artifacts will be with us. Her Driver, Mr. Bryant, will be attending and the Rolls Royce will be on display. Again, dear readers, Cover WOMAN ladies, community and followers… I am humbly amazzzed. I look forward to seeing you in print, digitally, out and about in Loudoun and soon in a documentary! Happy Spring! MAY Is Mental Health Awareness Month

l

By Dorri C. Scott, MSW ife with mental Illness can be tough. If you or a family member is dealing with pain from a mental illness, consider some or all of the tips below to make life brighter on those, less than sunny days.

laugh at daily in the moment, take a look at some of your old pics. Looking at some of those hairstyles from back in the day, is enough to make you laugh. We all have them. Dig them up, laugh and cherish the memories.

Ultimately, bringing awareness to mental illness is the beginning of change. This month, lend a hand and share. We are NOT alone, and YOU are not either. Should you need additional help or more information to deal with stressors related to mental health, please feel free to contact us.

7. Leave Your Device Home Every Once In A While… REALLY! YES! We are all busy and life goes on, take a few hours away from phones, computers, tablets and Social Media driving your life – a break every once in a while will make room for something new! It will more than likely be less stressful and quieter too. Try it weekly for 3 hours and use that time to smell the roses, take a walk, call an old friend, write a letter or anything out of the ordinary and away from the daily grind.

Ways to boost your mental health – daily (no matter what…) 1. Keep A Gratitude Journal Research has shown those who keep a gratitude journal boost their energy, attitude and ALTITUDE. Write down THREE things in your journal daily that you are grateful for. At the end of the day, add 3 accomplishments in your journal. Review your log daily. See how you feel after reviewing how wonderfully accomplished and powerful you are and give yourself a great big hug before going to bed. 2. Add Gratitude Apps To Your Mobil Devices Two FREE apps include: • Attitudes of Gratitude • Happier 3. Start Your Day With A Cup Of Organic Coffee Coffee consumption is linked to lower rates of depression. If you are not a coffee drinker, try a cup of tea. Green tea is a great choice - soothing too! 4. Sleep Matters - Get A Good Night’s Sleep 7-8 Hours is recommended by most experts. If you are unable to get in 7-8 hours daily, REST. Have an end and beginning time for your day. Rest is important to positive wellbeing – even if you are unable to sleep. 5. Watch And Monitor Your Room Temperature It is recommended that for a good night sleep temperature should be between 60 degrees and 67 Fahrenheit. Adjust the temperature as the seasons change. 6. Laugh – A LOT! Laughter as we have all heard is good for the soul. Hang out with an old friend. Go to a comedy show. Turn on those old Lucy shows… Find something to laugh about daily. It reduces anxiety. BTW… if you can’t find something to

8. Do Something POSITIVE For Someone Else It is hard to be sad when giving or doing something for others. Not sure how or what to do? Here are some ideas: • Volunteer at a local food pantry. • Visit a senior citizen at one of the senior living centers in your neighborhood – even if you don’t know anyone who resides there. He or she will welcome the visit and you will be glad you went. • Send flowers to someone you love – Just because! • Read a book to a child at your local school. • Pay it forward. When driving through the toll booth, pay for the person behind you and wave as you pass by. • Plant a garden for a neighbor who loves the outdoors • Whistle. Skip. Smile. • Pack a love note in your child’s lunch. • Go and walk a dog at a local shelter. 9. Dance Like Nobody’s Watching Dance while cleaning, cooking, getting your mail from the mailbox, ANYTIME, ALL DAY. Just create music in your head and feel the rhythm that plays in your heart to make you happy. 10. Take A Warm Bath Adding epsom salts to soothe those aches and pains weekly will boost magnesium levels. Also, it will slow you down to sit and take a bath compared to a quick shower. For additional ways to boost your mental health throughout the month, check out our website: www.loudounwpmanmagazine.com and enjoy our regular posts on Facebook

Woman to Woman: Let's Talk Teens & STDs By Dr. Gloria Ivey-Crowe

he inspiration for my articles comes from not only my patients, but also reviewing the health awareness calendar and perusing what health issue will be highlighted during the upcoming months. I find myself wondering who chooses what topic, why this month, why these days and why not this topic? Some months are jam-packed with awareness and some months only acknowledge a few awareness topics during the month - although there a many more days in the month with no awareness. This May and June, the calendar is booked solid with awareness activities so many I found it hard to make a selection. Are we more aware or open to issues in the Spring, is there less clutter in our lives or do we lose some of the awareness because we have too much going on in our lives? I chose to discuss two topics that we don’t discuss openly but still go hand in hand. April was Sexually Transmitted Disease Awareness Month. How many of you knew that? Probably, not many because you are not worried about that ever happening to you or maybe just don’t even care. Regardless, I'm sharing a few statistics with you: •

Half of all people will have an STD/STI (Sexually Transmitted Infection) at some point in their life;

There are 19.7 million STD/STIs each year! 1:4 teens will contract a STD

Only 1/3 of physicians routinely test for STDs

Not all STDs are reported therefore the numbers are higher. 15% of women who are infertile have tubal damage from having had an extensive pelvic infection.

12

May/June 2016 | VIRGINIA WOMAN MAGAZINE

How many STDs do you know about? If we took a poll the list would be different depending on the generation you asked. Even though we don’t hear about them, doesn’t mean they have been eradicated and don’t infect people anymore. Let’s test your knowledge: • Gonorrhea • Syphilis • Chlamydia • Hepatitis B • Crabs • Herpes • HIV • HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) • Trichomonas The symptoms for these infections vary and in some instances are nonexistent. The result of these infections can be life altering and devastating. Sexually transmitted infections commonly affect ages 1535 but it is not uncommon to find these infections in our nursing homes as well. Yeah, they still are “doing it” at that age and more so without fear and therefore no use of condoms or protection. Someone you know had one, has one or doesn’t even know they have one. How many ladies have been told that their pap smear came back ok except that it showed the presence of a virus called HPV? This STD is on the rise as compared to others. It may not be one of those other “bad” ones on the list, but did you know that there are over 100 different strains of this virus and that more than 10 of them have been linked to cervical cancer. This STD/STI is one of those quiet ones that can sneak up on you with no warning No bells or whistles or should I say drips, discharges or bumps to let you know its time for me to see my healthcare provider. A pap smear screens for cervical cancer and although dreaded by most women, this quick and simple test saves lives. educate. empower. inspire. inform.

virginia

Although the treatment in most cases is very simple and may only require antibiotics; prevention of STDs/STIs is the key. How do we prevent STDs/STIs: dare I say abstinence and risk being stoned? Since that’s not an acceptable option for many, use of a condom or barrier methods of contraception would prove to be useful. Use of condoms is not 100% since the spread of infection can be via sexual, oral or other intimate contact. The use of condoms and barrier methods have proven effective in decreasing the acquisition and spreading of STIs. The non-use of condoms not only leads to infection but pregnancy as well. May is Teen Pregnancy Prevention Awareness Month. Here are a few statistics: •

US has the highest teen pregnancy rate

In 2012 86,000 teens ages 1517 gave birth

77% of teen pregnancies are unplanned 30% end in abortion

Interesting statistic: 82% of teens felt that teens should not have sex.

Both of these topics require some consideration and education and prevention is the key. Teen pregnancy makes us aware of so much inadequacy with regards to our teen population. Have we failed them with education regarding prevention, complications, abstinence, or contraception? Surely with statistics like that, they don’t know enough to protect themselves from disease or pregnancy.

gives us power. We may not always exert that power but no awareness leaves us vulnerable to so much more. Don’t let our kids know more than we do. Start the conversation, listen and be proactive. Let them know if they don’t feel free to talk to you find someone who they can. Educate yourself on these diseases and don’t be afraid to entertain the thought that there are other issues on a deeper level which causes teens to seek affection and attention. May is also Women’s Health Awareness Month. It goes without saying every day we should be aware of our health. Our number one killer of women is heart disease. Prevention with exercise, nutritional and lifestyle changes are just the start. See a nutritionist, walk with a friend, enroll in a gym and get fit! Need help with weight loss call us to discuss our Serotonin Plus weight loss program and watch those pounds drop off!

Loudoun and surrounding counties are plagued with, dare I say, sex trafficking which makes awareness more paramount. One person sleeps with this person unprotected who has sexual relations with that person and who has sexual relations with the next one. Women you can’t judge a book by its cover or in this case no cover. Here’s my advice, use condoms, get tested, require your partner get tested before engaging in any activities. Many of us have teenage kids or know teenage kids; look out for signs of possible sexual activity, educate them about engaging in early sex, talk to your healthcare provider for more information. Also let’s make sure our education system provides the education needed for our young kids. For those who feel if you offer info on contraception you are encouraging them to do it, remember knowledge

It is That Time of Year AGAIN...

w

10 TIPS for Surviving (Another) Allergy Season By Dorri C. Scott

ith the arrival of warm weather finally here, many in the Northern VA – Washington DC area will experience the downside of a spring. Pollen and other airborne molds- OUCH!!!

If you or a loved one suffer from one or many particles, pollen, mold, etc unleashed in the air, here are 10 tips for making the season a little more bearable.

1. Find a cool pair of sunglasses.

Wear your sunglasses while out in the elements - and look good too! Oversized sunglasses tend to block airborne pollens and molds.

2. Hat lovers!!! This is your time. Buy a hat with a brim.

The wide brim will protect your face from the sun and help with allergies. Those “things” flying around your head and landing in your hair will be safer under your hat.

3. Exercise INDOORS!

As much as walking and running, especially in the warmer months is a great way to stay fit and enjoy the fresh air, it may not be good for your health if you suffer from seasonal allergies. Especially on high pollen days – Stay indoors! And if you must, know that pollen levels peak usually during midday and afternoons. High wind days are also a NO! No! as they increase pollens and allergens which linger in the air.

4. Eliminate weeds from your yard – EARLY! 5. Plant allergy – friendly greenery. Great choices include:

• Dogwood trees • Fir • Palm • Begonias • Azaleas

6. While at home – Keep windows and doors closed.

Open doors and windows invite allergens into your home

7. Clean and /or change filters in air conditioners frequently.

Setting a date each month to check filters like paying your mortgage or making a car payment is a great reminder. Make changing filters routine.

8. Shower and shampoo NIGHTLY.

Rinsing pollens out of one’s hair and off the body will ensure that pollens not be transferred to your bed where you sleep or sit in your home. Precautions such as rinsing your body and hair before going to bed is a preventative measure. Both will assist in enabling a good night’s sleep and stop pollens which might otherwise be transferred to your bed.

9. Begin treatment with medications as soon as symptoms start.

The sooner you start treating symptoms the better you will feel.

10. Always talk to your doctor BEFORE making

any changes in your treatment plan for optimum health.

All that extra weight takes a toll on your body, increasing your risk for heart disease, stroke, and other serious health problems. The American Heart Association says that, “Losing weight is one of the key health factors and behaviors that keep your heart healthy." Here is what happens to your vascular system as you lose weight: •

Blood vessels: Losing weight reduces your heart’s workload. Blood vessels supply the heart with the blood it needs to keep pumping. As you shed pounds, there’s less fat lurking around and forming plaque that can build up and clog your coronary arteries, causing a heart attack. Reduce your weight, reduce your risk. There is a direct relationship between a healthy weight and blood pressure. If you lose weight, you may be able to reduce your blood pressure medications or even eliminate them. The Cardiologists supervising The Healthy Weigh NowTM are always pleased to “unsubscribe” medications! Blood fats: The blood fats, or blood lipids, in your bloodstream change when you shed fat and weight. Weight loss can make your triglycerides go down, your LDL cholesterol go down, and your HDL cholesterol go up. That means there are more good cholesterol and less bad cholesterol and fat floating in your bloodstream.

Blood clots: Sometimes blood slows down and can form clots. Healthy weight and lower blood pressure generally mean fewer blood clots, so slimming down makes it less likely that a clot will break away and travel to your heart, lungs, or brain.

Your belly: Fat around the belly and the heart are especially detrimental to heart health. A 2011 study, published in the journal Cardiology, found that even normal-weight people with a “beer belly” or “muffin top” and heart disease have an increased risk of death than those with differently distributed weight. And research shows that hidden fat around the heart may be an even bigger indicator of cardiac disease than the waistline.

Obesity Is A Modern Scourge Dr. Kenneth M. Brooks, FACC

ost of us are consuming too many processed foods, refined sugars, and starches such as grains, sweets, snack foods, etc. In order to regulate blood sugar, our pancreas secretes insulin to metabolize sugar (glucose). We don’t realize that when carbohydrates are eaten, they are broken down into glucose, and whatever is not metabolized for energy is converted and stored as fat. When too many carbohydrates are consumed, the pancreas has to work too hard, resulting in insulin resistance. This leads to a drop in blood sugar which causes cravings for sugar and carbohydrates, beginning a vicious cycle of overeating, fat storage, and weight gain. The Healthy Weigh Now'sTM easy 3 Level Weight Loss Plan stops the cycle, promotes weight loss by using the fat your body has stored, and burns that fat for energy. Weekly meetings with our trained coaches guide you on the journey to a healthy weight. After weight loss, we are committed to providing you knowledge and guidance to maintain your weight loss for a life time. Key Points • Breast cancer is a disease in which malignant (cancer) cells form in the tissues of the breast. • Breast cancer is the second most common type of cancer in American women.

Breast cancer is a disease in which malignant (cancer) cells form in the tissues of the breast. The breast is made up of lobes and ducts. Each breast has 15 to 20 sections called lobes, which have many smaller sections called lobules. Lobules end in dozens of tiny bulbs that can make milk. The lobes, lobules, and bulbs are linked by thin tubes called ducts. Anatomy of the female breast. The nipple and areola are shown on the outside of the breast. The lymph nodes, lobes, lobules, ducts, and other parts of the inside of the breast are also shown. Each breast also has blood vessels and lymph vessels The lymph vessels carry an almost colorless fluid called lymph. Lymph vessels lead to organs called lymph nodes. Lymph nodes are small bean-shaped structures that are found throughout the body. They filter lymph and store white blood cells that help fight infection and disease. Clusters of lymph nodes are found near the breast in the axilla (under the arm), above the collarbone, and in the chest.

Breast cancer is the second most common type of cancer in American women. Women in the United States get breast cancer more than any other type of cancer except skin cancer. The number of new cases of breast cancer has stayed about the same since 2003. Breast cancer is second to lung cancer as a cause of cancer death in American women. However, deaths from best cancer have decreased a little bit every year for the past several years. Breast cancer also occurs in men, but the number of new cases is small. virginia

IMAGINE THIS... Look & Feel Extraordinary!

t

By Elaine Gibson his is what I dream about for you. It is an expression I have embraced because it says it all.

It wasn’t until February 2008, when I began the fight for my life, to beat Stage IV Cancer without traditional protocols, that I discovered the foundation and secret to my health. Once I understood that alkalinity and oxygen are key to a strong immune system, everything fell into place. My cells were on board. I was not depriving myself but rather embracing abundance and the seasonal harvest. In 2010, I was clean of all disease. The addition of a high alkaline lifestyle into my world created a wakeup call, literally. It was as if I was waking up from a deep sleep. I was ecstatic with energy and joy.Once I began making better choices I even lost 28 pounds and 4-5 sizes…..without ever thinking about dieting. I began catching myself singing. Without realizing it, I was singing to my sprouts, my garden and the world. The liveliness and elation are difficult to explain for it either sounds exaggerated or overstated.

The irony is that I had been told by my medical team that if I did not submit to traditional treatment, I would not see my grandchildren grow up. WOW! They certainly did not know the power of this Jewish grandmother from New York City. It is key to understand that these lifestyle changes are part of a never ending journey rather than a quick fix. Today I am about 80% alkaline and raw. I enjoy alkaline water and green juice every day. Green juice is my favorite food, for real. In order to stay consistent in the pursuit of my health, I held an image of my Jake grandson, then 10, in my heart. I saw him walking across the stage at his high school graduation and hugging me. This vision was with me always and enveloped me with belief and courage that I could make it happen. It was a symbol representing all that is important to me, all that matters and all that I love. It became my North Star. Today, as I sit writing this, we prepare for Jake’s graduation and I will collect my hug. Why would I choose this to share as my cover story for VA Woman Magazine? Because I believe that there is something within you that is so

important that calls you to create your personal vision to help guide and light the way. By embracing a healthy lifestyle that will provide more energy, focus and abundance, you will have the resources to support good choices. In order for you to create your best body, your best work and your best life, your cells need to be on board. Your visions will be seen in technicolor. Imagine how it will be when you make it happen. I can feel it now. I can feel the ripple of your gifts that impact the world. I know how much your dreams matter, not only to you but to us all for the greater good. I know you can do it and I believe in you and the magic of your dreams. One thing on my heart now is to have the honor of giving a Ted Talk by next year. I can see it, and imagine myself on a big stage impacting hundreds and maybe thousands to create a better life to bring their best work to the world. This is pretty scary but I hold the vision of being on stage, wearing an amazing blue dress that hits just below my knees along with fabulous bone pumps. Funny how I am feeling jittery right now for I know I can make it happen. I see my husband, children and grandchildren in the audience and I smile inside, for I know that I will collect more hugs and that they are always my North Star.

The Clock is

p

Ticking…

By Luanne Lee, CCPRS, YOUR COLLEGE PLANNING COACH

arents of HS Seniors. By now your child should have received their acceptance letters, the “thanks, but no thanks” rejection letters, or the dreaded “We’re not sure we want you until the students we offered acceptance decide to accept us or not” wait list letter! My advice? If your student received a wait list offer, print off several copies and have a family “tear it up and move on” party!! Choose a school that wants your student from the start and forget the ones that are keeping them in limbo. In 2014 UVA accepted 42 students off a 3000+ wait list. It’s NOT worth the stress or heartache!

Next, keep an eye out for the all-important Financial Aid Award offers. Some of you would have received some offer of a merit scholarship or grant with the acceptance letter. Most of you didn’t and are wondering where the Award offers are. Depending on the school, the Estimated Awards will be coming in over the next month or so. When they eventually do arrive, in your students email inbox, 99% of you will be looking at those Award letters and will start mumbling, cursing, crying, or yelling for hubby to open up a bottle of wine! As I write this article in the 1st week of April I am already getting weekly calls, and soon it will be daily, from parents trying to make sense of what they are looking at. Yes, the award letters can be confusing and sometimes a bit vague. Once you figure out what is being offered, and what isn’t, that is when the confusion really sinks in and what prompts the calls I get.

You can’t understand why your super bright, very accomplished 4.385 GPA student, 2160 SAT score, Honor Society member, school athlete, debate team member, etc., is only being offered Stafford loans, the PLUS, which stands for Parent Loan for Undergraduate Student, or what I commonly refer to as Predatory Lending by our U.S. government, a paltry amount of Work Study, IF yes was answered for the work study question on the FAFSA, and nothing else! Where are the Scholarships and Grants?? Surely there must be a mistake?! Believe me, when I tell you it’s not a mistake the tone of the phone call quickly turns from teary upset to teary anger! Now the stress really starts as you realize what you thought you had saved for college is nowhere near enough for 1 year, never mind 4! “What do we do? Do we take out loans? Can we even qualify? How can we possibly explain to our child we can’t afford to send them to their dream school??” This is the time of year MY day finishes with some extra time with the kick boxing bag, because I’m angry, too. Why? Because so many of these heart breaking phone calls could have been averted! If you are the parent of a HS Junior, Sophomore, Freshmen or Middle School student…YOUR clock is ticking, too! Don’t put your alarm clock on snooze for too long! Call us today so in a few years you will be calling me with tears of joy after receiving awards of acceptance and merit scholarships instead of tears of anger!!

Do I Need A Trust?

i

By Dawn M. Dale, Esq.

have received a number of calls about estate planning and it is very interesting how many people believe that they MUST have a trust as part of their estate plan. At first, I thought this meant that these individuals had spent some time reading about estate planning, which is wonderful. I am a big proponent of educating oneself. However, in too many of these cases, I learned that this belief was based solely upon the “advice” they received while attending a seminar, often over dinner at a nice restaurant or by attending a “free” webinar. Like the presenters of these events, I believe that trusts are extremely valuable tools and the incorporation of a trust as part of one’s estate plan should be carefully considered. Where I differ, however, is that I do not believe that the use of a trust is right for everyone. Unlike a Will, Advance Medical Directive and Durable Power of Attorney, the decision to incorporate a trust into your plan should be based upon careful consideration of a number of factors. So, what are some of the key factors: Incapacity Are you concerned about a potential incapacity? Do you anticipate having someone assume management of some, or all, of your financial affairs? Size and Nature of Your Estate What is the value of your estate? Do you own real estate in multiple states or even countries? Do you have business interests that you want to be managed and maintained for your heirs?

to all of your grandchildren)? Do you want to provide protection from the claims of a divorcing spouse and creditors? Do you want to provide for professional management of your estate while your beneficiaries are young or do not possess the knowledge and experience to manage the inheritance? Privacy Generally the terms of a trust remain a private matter, whereas the terms of a will become a matter of public record. Cost Including a trust in your estate plan will increase the cost of preparing the documents. After your death, the trust becomes a separate and distinct taxpayer so there will be costs associated with preparing the income tax return. There may also be a fee charged by the trustee to manage the trust assets. Complexity A trust adds complexity. It is a separate legal entity which must be managed properly. In summary, the decision to include a trust as part of your plan should be based on an analysis of your unique situation and an evaluation of the costs and benefits of the trust. Situations change and this decision should be re-evaluated during your periodic estate plan reviews. If you would like to learn more, please call to schedule an appointment.

Your Beneficiaries Who are the intended recipients of your assets? Are any of them minors, have special needs or suffer from a disability? Are you concerned about their ability to manage wealth or the potential loss of wealth in the event of a divorce or a creditor claim? Dispositive Goals Do you intend to leave your estate outright to your beneficiaries? Do you want to benefit multiple people with some portion of your estate over a period of time (i.e., a pool of funds to provide educational assistance Dawn M. What The Heck Is A BORSAbag? By Diane E. Piper orsa is Italian for bag. My design — BORSAbag® — is a newly patented, unique, self-storing, water resistant BIG-BAG-in-a-littlebag. So, what’s the difference between a BORSAbag and any other bag?

BORSAbag has numerous uses: •

Handbag protector in the rain, at a restaurant, in a restroom

Great Travel Companion Secure to your carry-on. Put your personal items inside and place it by your feet for easy retrieval. Put your personal items inside a BORSAbag before placing in the overhead compartment. While on travel, use BORSAbag for…

BORSAbag is one piece, one word. The small pouch is connected to the large protective bag preventing the possibility of losing the pouch. Also, preventing the need to carry a second bag for storing your used, wet, dirty protective bag. While on vacation in Florence, Italy, in 2007, my husband bought me a beautiful leather handbag. The leather was soft, smooth, and simply gorgeous. I wanted something to carry with me so that, if needed, I could protect the fine leather. I wanted something that I could get wet, dirty, or sandy, and still somehow store, even after use, inside my handbag. Nothing was available on the market. I was still working full time when I designed BORSAbag. After many sleepless nights and notes that were poorly scribbled by the light of a flashlight during the night, I came up with my ‘inside out’ design. My design allows you to Get It Wet and Dirty; Store It Clean and Dry®. To use: pull the large protective bag out of the small pouch and turn the large bag inside out placing the small pouch ‘on the inside’ along with the personal items you want to cover, protect, or conceal. Use the convenient shoulder straps to carry. To store: remove items, turn the large bag inside out, exposing the little pouch. Stuff the large bag inside the clean, dry pouch and safely store in pocket or purse.

BORSAbag weighs 3 oz.; is lightweight, flexible, pliable, and very durable. Made of ripstop nylon, the same material as is used for parachutes and windsails. Several styles of BORSAbag are available. Order online at borsabag.com and also at amazon.com BORSAbag is available at a wholesale price for companies to use with their own logo for promotional purposes.

“BORSAbag was a lifesaver! I was on a pontoon boat and it was ‘wetter’ than After my design was completed and having made my own crude prototype, I wanted it to be for my purse and camera bag. I remembered that I put my I searched for a manufacturer. At age 71, I have ventured into the unknown world of entrepreneurship having designed a unique, self-storing BAG-ina-bag — BORSAbag® . This design was created out of my personal need for something to protect a fine Italian leather handbag. I have no design, marketing, or PR experience to draw from. Everything I do is brand new. The way that I describe this new venture is: “I feel as though I’m in a vast field of tall grass with my machete. I just whack away to find my path.” I was determined to find an American manufacturer. I am proud that my manufacturer in Virginia supports UNICOR, a federal prison industry producing goods and services. By buying ‘Made in America’, we support American manufacturing and give others a second chance. Also proud that we were able to donate to the American Red Cross, the D.C. Boys’ Choir, and Mighty Oaks Warrior Foundation.

The Community Foundation for Northern Virginia

s

By Eileen Ellsworth, President ince 1978, the Community Foundation has been the premier charitable partner trusted by thousands of generous Northern Virginians.

Our mission is to grow philanthropy to help meet the most critical needs of the community. Comprised of giving circles, donor advised funds, and other charitable endowments, we help connect donors to community, meet community needs with community resources, and strengthen Northern Virginia. Our Community Foundation serves the entire region, including Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun and Prince William Counties and the Cities of Alexandria, Fairfax, Falls Church, Manassas and Manassas Park. During the 2015 fiscal year, the Community Foundation awarded $4.2 million in grants and scholarships, a record level of giving. But we decided many years ago that we would not measure our success simply by the amount and number of grants and scholarships we award each year. Community leadership is a core competency of our organization as well.

The Community Foundation commissions and publishes data driven research reports on the real needs of the region. We convene the community to help address complex and persistent issues. We engage in cross-sector collaborations. And we help the community apply strategic thinking to the distribution and use of our precious local resources. Whether we are awarding grants, leading a broad-based community coalition, or publishing research on the critical needs of Northern Virginia, we do nothing alone. Together we create lasting change to help transform the region. Please join us on May 12, 2016 at the Chairman’s Breakfast for a panel discussion: The Intersection of Philanthropy & Innovation – Building Community through Venture Philanthropy. Registration information is available at www.cfnova.org. More information about the Community Foundation for Northern Virginia’s work in the region, recent grants and upcoming events can be found at www.cfnova.org.

The Suffragist Movement, Still Relevant Today

w

By Patricia Depew Wirth

omen in America fought tirelessly for every “right” that is now enjoyed by the masses; yet the struggle for equality continues and is never over. These rights and accomplishments are taken for granted because the struggles to achieve them and the women involved were conspicuously omitted from mainstream history. In 1980, Molly Murphy MacGregor and others founded the National Women’s History Project (NWHP) in Santa Rosa, CA, to broadcast women’s historical achievements. At that time, no more than 3% of the content in texts was devoted to women! THREE PERCENT! The NWHP convinced Congress and the White House of the need for our nation to celebrate and recognize women’s role in history on an annual basis. As a result of their efforts, President Carter officially designated the week of March 8th (International Women’s Day) as National Women’s History Week. “From the first settlers who came to our shores, from the first American Indian families who befriended them, men and women have worked together to build this nation. Too often the women were unsung and sometimes their contributions went unnoticed. But the achievements, leadership, courage, strength and love of the women who built America was as vital as that of the men whose names we know so well. As Dr. Gerda Lerner has noted, ‘Women’s History is Women’s Right.’ – It is an essential and indispensable heritage from which we can draw pride, comfort, courage, and long-range vision. I ask my fellow Americans to recognize this heritage with appropriate activities during National Women’s History Week, March 2-8, 1980. I urge libraries, schools, and community organizations to focus their observances on the leaders who struggled for equality – – Susan B. Anthony, Sojourner Truth, Lucy Stone, Lucretia Mott, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Harriet Tubman, and Alice Paul. Understanding the true history of our country will help us to comprehend the need for full equality under the law for all our people. This goal can be achieved by ratifying the 27th Amendment to the United States Constitution, which states that “Equality of Rights under the Law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex. ” – President Jimmy Carter. In 1987, NWHP led the successful campaign to have the entire month of March declared National Women’s History Month. Relentless, female advocacy is what makes the difference in gaining equality for women. Tuesday, April 12, 2016 was Equal Pay Day. Until the Equal Rights Amendment, written by suffragist Alice Paul, is ratified by three more states as President Carter called for in 1980, American women continue to be denied full citizenship/equality and have to fight for it piece meal

with legislation such as the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act. You all know that at the rate we are going, women will not earn equal pay until 2059. Why does this matter? Because over a 47-year working career a woman with a HS education will earn $700,000 less than a man, with a BS $1,200,000 less and with a graduate degree, $2,000,000 less! April 12th was also the day that President Obama designated the Sewell-Belmont House as the Belmont-Paul Women’s Equality National Monument. This historic mansion on Capitol Hill continues to serve as the headquarters for the National Woman’s Party formed by Alice Paul in 1916. Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it. If we fail to recognize the work of the suffragists who were the first female activists fighting for equality, we run the risk of seeing our rights eroded by those who think “women are a lesser cut of meat” than a man per South Carolina politician, Tom Corbin! The Turing Point Suffragist Memorial Association’s mission is to build a national memorial to commemorate and educate the uninformed about the suffrage struggle, but that is not all. Our Turning Point Institute - to be launched upon completion of the memorial - will use the suffragists as role models to form the foundation of our intended programs for middle and high school girls from around the country. We want to educate, inspire and empower present and future generations to remain vigilant in the quest for equal rights. As Present Obama said at the Belmont-Paul Equal Rights National Monument dedication, "That’s the thing about America—we are never finished. We are a constant work in progress." 2020 is the centennial anniversary of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution giving all American women the right to vote. There is no national monument to honor the millions of suffragists who fought for 72 years to win this right and to finally include us in the Constitution. This is a travesty! These women were warriors; Inez Milholland lost her life, Susan B. Anthony and Alice Paul forgave having families of their own to concentrate on their advocacy. The decades-long, peaceful “struggle” turned bloody in 1917 when scores of suffragists were arrested and jailed at President Wilson’s direction for picketing the White House. The women taken to the Occoquan Workhouse, ages 19 to 73, were beaten, some unconscious, and kept in deplorable, inhumane conditions. It was not until word leaked out ! that action was finally taken to get Congress to consider an Amendment. You can help make history by supporting our effort to build this national memorial. Your generous donation will help us meet the 2020 deadline. Please contact me if you want to hold a fundraiser or establish a giving

Stand Out & Break Through The Noise By Jen Dalton, MBA, REACH Master Personal Brand Strategist

hen I was in the corporate world, it was always heads down and work hard. I had built a reputation for being a hard worker and supporting the business. However, I decided that the work I was doing was not fulfilling. After having my second son, I knew I wanted to be a gutsy role model for my children. It was then that I decided to become an entrepreneur. It is a journey I will always be on, always learning, focused on making a difference for others.

to staying relevant. In order to stand out, and be a noisebreaker, you have to have clarity, confidence, and be gutsy. The Intentional Entrepreneur is your personal sidekick to help you become intentional and pursue your purpose and passion. Get your print version on Amazon and I will be more than happy to grab coffee, sign it, and help you stand out and cut through the noise.

Have you found yourself in a similar place where you are not sure what value you add next? Are you thinking about starting your own venture or perhaps know someone who has started theirs? I wrote The Intentional Entrepreneur to help people accelerate their business growth by providing tools and frameworks to help them gain more clarity on what they bring to the table. Being intentional means planning ahead, and for most entrepreneurs it means making sure your messaging, offerings, and you, as the face of the company, are aligned. In a world where everyone is making noise, posting online, talking about anything and everything, it is more important than ever to have a clear message and to be able to develop and share content that shows how you think. In order to cut through the noise, and be a noisebreaker, you have to know what resonates with your audience and what is authentic to you. From new college hire, to mid-manager, executive, CEO, and entrepreneur – if you cannot clearly and quickly be compelling and know how to have a conversation that involves really listening, you will fail. Building your personal brand is 90% what your audience thinks of you and 10% of what you think of yourself. Perception is reality. If you are not clear on what you want, and what you can offer, you will miss opportunities that others will claim. Being an entrepreneur is not easy, or glamourous. I joke that I have freedom, but no free time. Whether you decide to be an entrepreneur or not, having clarity on who you are, what you have as strengths, and who will pay you for your expertise is critical “The Intentional Entrepreneur gives you everything you need to ensure your brand is working 24 hours a day to meet your goals and realize your dreams. I keep 5 books within arm’s reach at all times and this is one of them.” - David Conley, Serial Entrepreneur “I wish that I was able to have this information and content when I started my business. Jen Dalton captures the entrepreneur’s mindset and knows what it is needed to think things through when having a start-up, which ultimately leads to better cost-savings, strategy and focus. I highly recommend this book!” - Laura Lee Williams, CEO & Founder, Laura Lee Designs, Inc.

“It takes courage to grow up and become who you really are.” - E.E. Cummings. Noisebreakers - The Intentional Entrepreneur expands your thinking beyond who or what you think your business is. It makes you take a step back and see your business as yourself so that you can stand out from the noise and be the brand in demand you are meant to be. - Sherrell T. Martin, CEO, Nitram Financial, www.nitramfinancial.com “A great and informative read, wherever the journey of entrepreneurship finds you. There are sections for the beginner and the seasoned adventurer; there’s real substance here for everyone. Jen Dalton sheds light in a way that is informative and accessible; I love her written voice. Enjoy, and learn something new!” - Michael Sauri, President & Co-Owner, TriVistaUSA

Why My Mommy Makes Treats

m

For All The Doggies (And Me!)

y mommy has been making treats for her own dogs, and their dog friends, for decades. She started making them, because she couldn’t find any to buy that had the ingredients she felt ok feeding us. If you want to terrify yourself sometime, look up what is in the most dog treats and dog foods, many of the ingredients aren’t even legal in other countries. The invention of pet food came about because grain and meat companies had rancid grains and meats, sick or downed animals that they couldn’t sell. The chemicals alone are horrifying. It makes my tummy hurt just thinking about it. Imagine, that is what you get to eat, everyday, for your whole life! No wonder most of the dogs I see on my walks are overweight, have allergies, skin issues, cancers, lumps and bumps and live such short lives. It is very sad! Spend a little more on treats and food - to spend a lot less on vet bills. We dogs should thrive, not just get by on what is not fit for you humans to eat! Also… finding treats and dog food that doesn’t support animal abuse is very difficult. She doesn’t want me to have any yucky stuff in my little puppy body! I only get treats and food from humanely raised animals, because i love animals too, naturally. Thank you furry much for reading my article. Kisses & licks, Ardesia.
