hat a month!

August was a very busy month with a gimmick rally, two 25 th anniversary picnics, and a lunch & drive. September looks just as busy with a burger night, the Gold River charity drive, New Member Social and a TSD rally. A big thanks to all the volunteers, who make these events possible. Speaking of volunteers, we are actively looking for new members for our Executive team. A few members have stepped up but we still could use more help. Let us know if you would like to be a part of a fun group of members making the Club a continued success. The last and biggest of our 25th anniversary events, the Grand Gala, is planned for Saturday, October 23rd in Victoria at the Hotel Grand Pacific. Registration is now open on MSR and information is posted on the VIR website. This will be a great opportunity to get together, celebrate and raise money for the two charities, Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock and the Ucluelet Volunteer Fire Brigade. The 25 Roads challenge ends on September 30th, so you still have time to get out there, tour the island and visit the many great communities that are included in the drives. Yours truly is only five roads away from completing all 25 and with the drives already scheduled, the finish is in sight! Finally, as summer winds down, unfortunately our COVID-19 cases on the Island are increasing. Please be safe and if you haven’t already, I encourage you to get vaccinated so we can continue to get together.

s VIR has a fair number of new members recently (welcome!), I thought I would revisit our use of MotorsportReg.com. It is a website hosting all our event registrations and provides administrative support in providing reports, credit card processing etc for us. As we are a volunteer club, it has allowed us to manage our events with a limited number of people. So if you are not enrolled in MSR, please do so (for free) at motorsportreg.com. Our list of events is shown at our private VIR event list. You can also see our future events with their own MSR links in the ’Around the bend’ section on page 58 in this issue. Don’t miss the Grand Gala and New Member Social.

he Parade trip was our first three-week vacation ever, but who counts vacation days after retirement? We rested a bit in August, but made it over to the Oregon Region’s celebration of its 60th and 61st Anniversaries. The weather was beau-

tiful and the food and company were fantastic. Over 100 people brought their Porsches to display while we enjoyed talking to old and

new friends, listening to a great band playing music from my era, had some yummy food and listened for our number to be drawn for one of many door prizes. Porsche people are the best. We learned some good news that the Canadian border will reopen just in time to celebrate milestone anniversaries for our three British Columbia regions. I had reported at Parade that Zone 6 was getting over COVID and now were dealing with normal things like drought and wildfires. Just as we were preparing for somewhat normal travel to Canada, the world started experiencing another COVID spike that may affect all of our plans. British Columbia Interior has been hit especially hard with forest fires and COVID. Hang in there. In September and October we hope to help celebrate Canada West’s 45th anniversary on September 25, Silver Sage’s 55th on October 1, Cascade’s 60th on October 16 and Vancouver Island’s 25th on October 23. COVID restrictions may prevent us from attending British Columbia Interior’s anniversary on October 2, but we wish them the best. We have a lot of “birthday parties” this year and hope you all can enjoy them with us. Stay safe and I’ll see you in the Zone.

Webber Atkins

Over the past month, I attended all three of the 25 th Anniversary Picnics, and each was delightful. The lunches, venues and cars were wonderful and it was great to meet and catch up with other members – in person! Well done to all the organizers. I must also give a nod to Mother Nature for obliging us with very good weather. I also caught up in reporting my 25 Roads drives, all 6 of them. Rowland and I had a lot of fun doing the drives and look forward to completing a few more. We had a particularly memory-making time on Road 15, when we ended up the Lion Rampant Scottish Pub just around dinner time and decided to dine there. What a pleasant spot! It reminded us of some of the places in England that we loved, only with a distinct Vancouver Island flair. We would likely never have found it without 25 Roads. In my last article, I said I would provide more information about some of the Board vacancies due to come up in October. Three key roles that I’d like to outline here are Treasurer, Secretary and Membership Chair.

Treasurer

The Treasurer is responsible for keeping records and accounts that reflect the financial condition and operation of the Region. Other duties include signing or co-signing drafts on the accounts of the Region and any corporate documents which obligate the Region financially. The Treasurer also provides a monthly report to the Board of Directors and an annual report to the Board of Directors and membership. All that is really required is a basic grasp of arithmetic, but accounting experience is beneficial.

Secretary

The Secretary is chiefly responsible for recording and circulating the minutes of Executive Committee meetings. Other duties include preparing the agenda and arranging the logistics of Executive Committee meetings, whether they are held via Zoom, or in person. In the coming year, the Board would like to see some order brought to the records of the Club, through the development of a Records Management Strategy. Ideally, the Secretary would lead or participate in this process.

Membership Chair

The Membership Chair is chiefly responsible for welcoming new members to the Club, through a welcome e-mail, and provision of a name tag. They also report monthly on new members, Club size, and milestone anniversaries, to the Board and to the membership VANCOUVER ISLAND — PORSCHER

through Porscher. This position works with PCA National on membership issues, and can join a PCA Membership Chair Facebook group, which connects Membership Chairs throughout PCA. This job can expand in accordance with the interests and time of the member filling the position. Typically, the Membership Chair organizes and MCs the New Member Social. The Chair can also identify and/or undertake activities designed to recruit new members, such as displays at non-PCA events.

Want to be VIR President some day?

Any position on the Executive, whether an elected Board position or an appointed Chair, can provide a good grounding in management of the Club, and suitable experience to move into the “top job”. This comes through attending Executive meetings regularly, participating in decision-making and contributing what you can. All positions come with benefits: good fellowship, a bit of fun, the opportunity to meet people you might not have otherwise, and for new Exec, $50 toward your choice of a VIR garment from the PCA Regional Store. An important thing to consider is that we all work as a team. If some aspect of the job is a bridge too far, or your life gets complicated for a while, we pull together and just make it work. More about other positions next month.

911 GT3 with Touring Package Porsche have announced a new 911 GT3 but without the large rear wing, it does have an extendable rear spoiler though. The power and price are the same as for the winged version though. Many lightweight components are used in the Touring and you can choose manual or PDK gearbox and a range of interior colours (unlike the winged GT3). Details at Porsche 911 GT3 with Touring Package

Macan model change-up In advance of the electric Macan joining the line of Macans models, Porsche have removed the Turbo, making the GTS the top of the line Macan. However, the GTS now has the 434hp engine from the Turbo (amongst other upgrades) and the new S now has 375hp which was in the old GTS! So expect the Taycan’s sibling to come in at the top of the Macan lineup—in terms of power and price.

Cayenne Turbo GT The new Cayenne Turbo GT has a lightweight carbon roof with roof spoiler and sideplates in carbon. The 22-inch GT Design wheels and titanium sports exhaust system are confident accompaniments to it’s racing passion. PCM 6.0 is debuted in the Turbo GT. From Tim’s Facebook post… We had a fantastic turnout for the President’s Breakfast Drive to Genoa Bay on Saturday, July 31st. The skies were a bit overcast keeping it nice and cool but still very nice for enjoying breakfast on the dock. Irene and the ladies at the Genoa Bay Cafe served up a wonderful breakfast and it looked like the cinnamon buns were very popular. Our participants included guests from Palm Desert California (red shirts) and their Carmine Red hybrid Panamera, Ralph & Elynn (who is Canadian).

Thanks to the volunteers for leading and sweeping the two driving groups and of course Wyman for all the pictures. I've tried to capture everyone that was there.

25 Roads for 25 Years Challenge – August Update September is the last month of the 25 Roads for 25 Years Challenge and participation has been ramping up. Several teams look like they’re getting close to joining Teams Gosse and gary987 in completing all 25 roads. Some, like Teams Dempsey and Mayne Maniacs, have been steadily making headway since April. Others have appeared from out of nowhere, like Team Old Victorians who went from 0 to 18 drives in one (huge) email. Perhaps there are few teams out there that haven’t reported all their drives yet? We’d appreciate any new teams register by September 15 to be included in our prize planning. The Gold River Charity Drive on September 18 is a good opportunity to knock Road 21 off your list, as well as “Mining in the Park” (Road 24: Westmin Mine Road). The September 26 TSD Rally route hasn’t been released yet, but who knows, maybe it will cover some of the roads like the July rally did. Complete rules and instructions for the Challenge can be found on the VIRPCA website (under Events, 25 Roads Challenge) and in the Driving Log you received in the mail. You can also check on standings by clicking on the “RESULTS” button at the bottom of the 25 Roads Challenge page to see which roads have been driven the most, and “Team Statistics” to see which teams have been out driving. Click on a road or a team’s name for stories and photos. Sonia and I have been putting a few kilometres in and only have two drives left. Our most recent journey, with two other teams, was an overnight trip to Port Hardy, where we completed “Long Way Up” (Road 22: Port Hardy); “Alice in Wonderland” (Road 23: Port Alice); “Northern Sights” (Road 25: North Island) and “Fjord Foray” (Road 21: Gold River). We are always awestruck by how beautiful the northern area and western inlets of Vancouver Island are – rugged, remote, peaceful, and friendly. Port Alice and Coal Harbour were new to us and after talking to the museum staff in Coal Harbour (a must-do), I wish I had a Baja kit on the 911 to be able to do even more exploring. We came back with lots of great stories and memories. The twisties on these routes are truly meant to experience in a Porsche. One road update – I noticed that construction of the roundabout on Memorial Avenue and Island Highway 19A in Qualicum Beach has lengthened the stretch of road that is torn up in that area. Be prepared for a bit of dust and gravel (or make plans to bypass it).

SEPTEMBER 2021 Page 18

Editor-Stuart Macleod’s 25 Roads Facebook entry which makes interesting reading:-

Relative to my usual posts - the last one of which was on May 29 - this one is kinda epic. 8 days, 2,643 km, 15 challenge roads, One rest day, One track day, Seven Shell stops, and one Chevron!, Zero car washes Needless to say, too many highlights and photos to jam into a single FB post. In lieu, here are my headline memories, plus links to the videos created with the Relive app (much still to learn with Relive). Headlines Crossing paths multiple times with the Hagerty Island Adventure at the top of the Island. Such an amazing variety of cars, with drivers to match! Life-altering drives to Coal Harbour, Port Alice and Gold River. By life-altering, I mean I will alter my life so as to drive these again. Standing on the brakes to avoid a mama & baby bear sauntering across the road out of Telegraph Cove … I hear others spotted similar in the area! Enjoying the entire road up to the Mount Washington ski area, especially the legit switchback right near the top. Overcast and a shower or two up near the Ports, but otherwise just fabulous driving weather the entire trip. Off-roading on Denman Island, exploring back roads in lieu of a trip over to Hornby… the ticket for which the BC Ferries agent at Buckley Bay would not sell me because they were already over-subscribed for return ferries from Hornby… by noon, on a weekday! People are well and truly scratching that travel itch.

Kennedy Lake road construction on the trip to Ucluelet/Tofino… was exactly as fraught as expected. Can't recommend enough a close reading of the closure schedule, but there's going to be an element of luck depending on how much traffic is involved, and when. Ucluelet and Tofino were both packed, as were all the campsites and resorts in between. The silver lining… if you get a stretch of open road, the non-construction segments between Port Alberni and the coast are sublime. Relive videos (Porscher readers, please click on the links to ‘relive’ Stuart’s drives!) Day 1 - Roads 17 and 10... with a twist

As mentioned in my Editor’s text last month, Porscher was awarded 1st place in the PCA 2021 National Newsletter Contest. That is, across all regions within the PCA globally, Porscher was the best for our class of region and there are just 6 classes! We won that award in 2019 too, as you can see in the picture below. The trophies are really nice too, solid, heavy acrylic with a PCA medallion ‘floating’ in the middle. It is humbling to be recognised by fellow PCA editors and judges, and to win twice is truly amazing. Many thanks to all VIR members that submit articles, photos, ideas to Porscher, they do matter!

On my visits, the boys would set up race tracks in their play room, and zoom their “cool” cars around the tracks. My daughter is relatively strict about TV viewing. But when it was time to watch a movie, they’d settle in for “Cars.”

His name is Hugo. I know. It’s a “different” name for an almost seven-year-old. When asked “why Hugo,” I used to answer that they live in LA. And people would say “oh” and nod sagely. But now I can’t say that. They moved – my daughter, son-in-law, three kids under seven and two dogs – to Vancouver, BC, where my son-in-law’s from. They moved last year, as Covid went from bad to worse to really bad. When Hugo arrived at my apartment, he immediately located in my guest room six TonI didn’t complain. I’ve been doing it out of some vague hope that he’ll reveal the “car gene.” If you’re reading this, you probably know all about the gene. It makes you drool for the specs of a Turbo S. Cite absolute lap times around the Nurburgring for Porsche products. Recite the differences between every GT3 and GT3 RS ever made, by rote. I also doubled down. I got them a family membership to the Petersen Automotive Museum. And, one visit, I went with them. It was terrific. When I went to pick up the car, your mother came along, and sat pretty in her special jump seat, a seat specially designed to fit her and her little sister. Your mother thought that was the greatest thing ever. And so did Hugo. So, yeah, I do think he has the gene. And that fact has me thinking, once again, about something I’ve mentioned in the past. It’s this. Will Hugo ever actually drive? A few years ago, I was pretty adamant that SEPTEMBER 2021 Page 25

Single Payment Lease The Porsche Single Payment Lease is a convenient alternative to an outright cash purchase. It’s designed for owners that want the convenience of a cash purchase, but also want to benefit from the advantages of a lease. The sun is shining, the weather perfect, the Porsches arrive and the day begins! Presents! What a way to start - thanks for the swag bag! Drivers exit their beauties and have their picture taken courtesy of Henning Wulff with the VIRPCA 25th Anniversary placard displayed in the background. Drivers were then directed to their appointed zones: the Boxsters, the water-cooled 911s, the air-cooled 911s, the 944s, the Caymans, a GT3, a 356, and a Macan. What a collection! Let the fun begin! The grounds of the Filberg Park, which is nestled halfway between Goose Spit and the Comox Marina, provided a fitting backdrop to the highly polished cars displayed for everyone to enjoy. Members, old and newest (Adam & Karen Lee), as well as visiting public were invited to vote on their favourite car, colour, and year. Besides the automotive "Rennbow" to admire was local artist/pilot Malcolm Fletcher (photo below). His desire to have a Porsche led him to choose Porsche automobiles as the subject matter to adorn his canvases. His work can be viewed at malcolmfletcher.ca (Editor-we have featured his great work in the 2019 September issue!)

John Clark had tables set up with numerous models of famous race cars, rare models, and vintage Porsches. Something I know I take advantage of is John's generousness when he offers up duplicates of magazines or just wants to make room for newer ones - all for FREE! Thanks John. Tim and Marilyn manned the VIRPCA merchandise table. They offered quite an array of 25th Anniversary gear including hats, blankets, umbrellas, chairs, T-shirts, as well as items from other events like Black Rock. For the picnic portion of the afternoon members were treated to an exceptional lunch by Yolanda at "Custom Gourmet Chef". Individual pre-ordered "bag lunches" were prepared and labelled so that upon delivery Zoë Levitsky, Sonia Ross and Albert had no problems distributing them to the participants. And the winners were: People’s Public's Choice Public’s favourite year Public’s favourite colour Member’s Choice

Roger Quintana generously donated an interior detailing gift certificate. Roger gave the gift to his choice of “the interior most needing attention" to Franz-Albert Burgund. (I didn't think my car was that bad but NOW it is going to get a professional cleaning!) An event such as this does not just happen. It takes careful planning, dedication, vision, and endless hours of work behind the scenes - all done for the love of the Porsche brand. The driving force of the Porsche-a-Palooza was our own John Clark. John has an absolute VANCOUVER ISLAND — PORSCHER

obsession with all things Porsche. He has read a plethora of magazines and books, watched countless videos, attended more than a fair share of events and owned numerous models - a true aficionado! John was aided in his quest to put together a memorable weekend by his wife Zoë Levitsky, Trevor & Sonia Ross, and Tim & Marilyn Evans. A special shout out to Trevor & Jackie Minta who took photos. There's a rumour that they shot a video too. Zoë wanted to mention invaluable assistance from Gary Glover and Steve Fairbrother who promptly answered her requests for technical assistance. From the local community: Bert Heeringa the owner/ operator of the Canadian Tire store in Courtenay who generously offered the "Rally in Valley" staging space as well as the water bottles for all participants. Pens were supplied by 911 cabriolet owner and club member Richard DeLuca of DeLuca Veale Investments. For anyone I forgot to mention by name - my apologies. Your efforts are no less appreciated and I thank you for your time and service. For the public that came out: "Thank you" for letting us share our Porsche passion with you. For my fellow VIR club members who interacted with the public - answering questions, explaining the differences, teaching the terminology I thank you and truly hope that at least one more convert will be joining us shortly. Other volunteers were recruited, donations secured, caterers contacted, registration process initiated, and venues prepared and prayers were said. John's dream came to fruition as this event played out flawlessly. A quick look in the dictionary shows the definition of "Lollapalooza" to be: noun slang. 1 an extraordinary or unusual thing, person, or event: an exceptional example or instance . By extension our Porsche-a-Palooza was a exceptional example of what the VIRPCA embodies.

Franz-Albert PS. If Henning’s name sounds familiar it might be because he and Tonia were featured VIR members in last month’s Porscher. I caught up with him in the early afternoon where he was taking pictures with what I thought was an older Leica. Henning explained that it was quite a modern camera - digital but specifically set up for black and white photography. He went on to praise the benefits of the art but perhaps a picture is worth a 1000 words. We are very fortunate to have Henning taking photos at our events. The quality of his work is outstanding. Thank you for your tireless efforts in recording our cars digitally for all to admire!

Rally in the Valley OR How to get an education while driving your Porsche! Part of the August 7-8 weekend included the "Rally in the Valley", where the Up Island part of VIR got to showcase the Comox Valley. Local Porsche fanatics John Clark, his wife Zoë Levitsky, as well as Trevor & Sonia Ross spent many hours coming up with 52 questions that challenged drivers and navigators to explore and learn about the ceded and traditional lands of the Komox Nation. Unlike the Gumball Rally or the Cannonball Run the "Rally in the Valley", did not focus on speed, evading the RCMP, or a myriad of other high jinks. Tim Evans gathered the drivers and collected waivers and explained the fun that the participants would shortly be embarking on. The teams would have to get out of their Porsches and find the answers to the 52 questions. Street signs, historical plaques, monuments, the Walk of Fame, and even gravestones provided answers. There were different routes that allowed the organizers to minimize congestion by starting folks off in four directions. The routes took the 15 cars (30 participants) to: Royston beach, Cumberland historical coal mining area, Chinese/Japanese cemetery, downtown; Courtenay's 5th Street shopping core, Walk of Fame, Native Sons Hall, and a freebie ice cream or beverage at "Hot Chocolates"; The Dyke Road - estuary for some "bird watching/counting", the Komox Band Cedar Lodge; and the town of Comox Zoë and Sonia greeted each pair of driver/navigator in the staging area and handed them their question/instruction sheets, a bag with water and pens - all of which came in handy. The day was slightly overcast for the most part and a few light showers later on did not spoil the afternoon’s enjoyment. The time limit was manageable but I was worried at one point that we would be late. Thanks to my fellow rally enthusiasts - many of whom I encountered at different stages of the event - I was able to find where the answers were "hiding". To give you some idea of how you had to focus on what you had to do (while driving) was... one question asked: How many teapots could one find in the birdhouse condos? Take a look: - I had to stop and take a picture - a memento. Zoë Levitsky had the unenviable task of marking the answers. When all was said and done, the organizers and participants gathered at the Blackfin Pub for a scrumptious dinner and announcement of how the day went. Fortunately everyone seemed to have had an awesome time. We all learned quite a VANCOUVER ISLAND — PORSCHER

2nd:

Thank you to all who attended the Club’s 25th Anniversary Mid Island Picnic on Sunday Aug 15, 2021 at the Rocking Horse Pub, Nanoose Bay. The weather was mostly sunny and warm, great for sitting outside on the pub patio for our served lunch. There were 33 Porsches and 56 people in attendance. Our Show & Shine was nicely displayed by the volunteers that helped to park and position the vehicles on the grass and pavement areas. The “People’s Choice Award”, of the Show & Shine, was awarded to Ann Aikenhead (with Shrek). Dean was absent for the moment of glory, however a second mysterious Shrek appeared to keep Ann company on the ride home. We also had one Second place

winner. I was a wee bit confused in giving the awards, but it was straightened out in the end. My apologies to Bryce Holtz for my confusion. We would like to thank Louise and her staff at the Rocking Horse for a great lunch and their excellent service. The food was very good, and cooked to order. We appreciate the cooperation in the use of their facility for our show & shine. There were three large boxes of food and cash donations, from the Porsche Club attendees, for the Parksville Food Bank. Gary and I presented them to food bank, and the volunteers were extremely grateful for our Club’s generosity (see below).

Synthetic

From Merriam-Webster’s adjective syn•thet•ic | \ sin-the-tik : devised, arranged, or fabricated for special situations to imitate or replace usual realities noun : something resulting from synthesis rather than occurring naturally especially: a product (such as a fuel) of chemical synthesis

We have used for many years a great deal of synthetic products in our Porsches, from the plastic and composite parts in most areas of the vehicle, to the adhesives that keep them together, to the Mobil1 synthetic motor oil that comes from the factory to lubricate and cool our engines. But, we may be using a brand new synthetic product soon: Synthetic Fuel. Well, brand new may not be very precise. Audi, Bosch and McLaren, among others, have been talking about working on the technology for years. But further back, to be precise in the late 1930s, Nazi Germany had already developed and perfected the hydrogenation process to supply the Nazi War Machine its fuel needs by way of synthetic fuels made from its vast domestic supplies of coal. What may be surprising is that technology is still in use today, in particular in South Africa. After apartheid was instituted, many oil-producing nations refused to sell oil to the apartheid regime and a local company (Sasol) was created to produce synthetic gas and oils for their domestic use. The plant is still productive, and since its inception, Sasol has produced over 1.5 billion gallons of gasoline, which is basically no different than the gasoline produced from Texas crude oil. In the last year, Porsche has been talking up a storm regarding synthetic fuels. Even though, as a company, Porsche is committed to going full electric across its platforms in a few short years, they also understand that older Porsches will be around for many years to come and their owners want to keep enjoying them as they have in the past. Porsche wants therefore to significantly and independently drive forward the development of synthetic fuels, also known as eFuels. VANCOUVER ISLAND — PORSCHER

SEPTEMBER 2021 Page 46

“This technology is particularly important because the combustion engine will continue to dominate the automotive world for many years to come,” says Michael Steiner, Member of Porsche’s Executive Board, Research and Development. "If you want to operate the existing fleet in a sustainable manner, eFuels are a fundamental component." "We have a team that is looking for suitable partners who want to build pilot plants with us and prove that the entire process chain works and can be industrialized," says Steiner. eFuels are produced from CO2 and hydrogen, using renewable energy. In terms of their basic properties they are no different from any other fuel produced from crude oil, however, they can ideally be a climate-neutral fuel. Porsche believes in eFuels so much that they are considering entering Formula 1, if the series commits to going greener – specifically with synthetic fuels. Porsche believes that by using eFuel to power an internal combustion engine (ICE) car, emissions can be reduced by 85% and can be as clean as a battery-electric vehicle when wheel-to-well lifecycles are taken into account. The eFuels Porsche is talking about are completely man-made and do not contain unwanted elements, as fossil fuels do, that get converted into pollutants in the combustion process. These fuels could power existing ICE cars without any modifications.

A plant in southern Chile will implement a proprietary methanol-to-gasoline process under license by Exxon Mobil. Water will be split into hydrogen and oxygen by electrolysis and CO2 will be filtered out of the air and processed with the hydrogen to create synthetic methanol. Then the proprietary methanol-to-gasoline work comes into play. Porsche says that the eFuel works on everything from the latest-generation GT3 to a classic 911 from many decades ago. In 2022, Porsche will begin trials of the eFuel with production of some 34,000 gallons. By 2026 Porsche says that if everything goes according to plan, we could see a production of 145 million gallons. I guess most of us will still be around to use eFuel in our beloved ICE Porsches. I can’t wait to fill my (300K plus miles) 1998 Boxster with eFuel. I can then drive it another 300,000 miles as guilt-free as if I was driving a Taycan. VANCOUVER ISLAND — PORSCHER
