H
appy New Year! I would like to introduce myself as the new Zone 6 Rep. Below I have excerpted a few lines from my bio to be published in the February issue of Panorama:
I am a long-time car enthusiast. Early in my car buying, I decided to buy a Z28 Camaro instead of Porsche 914, big mistake. I purchased my first Porsche, a 2003 911 Carrera 4, in 2005. My wife, Nancy, and I joined the Silver Sage Region in 2010 and we have been enjoying PCA regional and national events ever since. When I am not participating in PCA events, I can be found on the ski slopes or playing tennis. I am looking forward to the role as Zone 6 representative and getting to know more of my fellow PCA’ers. I want to thank Mark & Linda Prusynski for all their guidance and support. Initially, in helping me understand what a Zone Rep’s job is and helping me navigate the steps towards filling the position. Mark tells me, the Zone Rep is the best job in PCA. I look forward to learning what Mark meant. We continue to be impacted by Covid. The Winter PCA in-person meeting has once again become a Zoom meeting. However, Zone 6 activity planning is moving ahead. Nancy & I have already signed up for; Canada West Region’s Escape 2022 and Inland Northwest Region’s 50th Anniversary Gala. I will be holding my first Region Presidents’ meeting in Boise the weekend of March 18/19. We are planning to attend: Parade (Phase 1 signup opens February 2); both Spring and Fall Treffens; Broadmoor (registration opens on February 16); SunRiver; Vancouver Island Region’s charity event at Black Rock; and Silver Sage Region’s fall car show - Oktoberfast. We would love to hear of other events you think we should be considering. Stay healthy and we will see you in the Zone.

This is our 2022 Taycan 4 Cross Turismo It was at a 2021 Porsche Experience Day we attended at VIMC, that we got to try all the Taycan variants, right up to the 750 hp “Turbo S”. That day gave us a good idea about the power, acceleration and handling that the Taycan would do, and what would suit us. We picked it up just before Xmas and our first drives were in the snowy conditions we had. It was very surefooted and handled the conditions wonderfully. Some of the specs are:All-Wheel drive with 20” M&S all-season tires. Five driving modes and suspension setting and height control. “Gravel” mode is specific to the Cross Turismo. We used it quite extensively for the snowy driving. Colour - Frozen Blue Metallic. Performance Battery - 93.4 kwh, dual electric motors with 2-speed transmission. Charging time from 5% to 85% is 22 mins on DC Level 3 charger. Home Charging from 5% to 85% is 7-8 hrs on Level 2 AC 9.6Kwh. Launch Control - equivalent 469 hp. Range - 400km+ (this is a whole topic depending on EPA or WLTP ratings) Sport Chrono Package, Rear Axle Steering, among the options. Some of our winter driving excursions have included Nanaimo to Mount Washington and back. Left home with 95% power, we parked at Mt Washington with 55%, snowshoed for a couple of hours, selected preheat (from my phone app), got back to a nice warm car and drove home to Nanaimo with 20% left. No range anxiety on Vancouver Island! Cheers

BLACK ROCK 2022 Planning Update We would like to wish all our VIR members a Happy New Year and wish everyone a Healthy 2022. Now that we are into the new year the Black Rock committee is starting to gear up its planning steps for our Black Rock 2022 charity event. Please note that our dates of Thursday, May 12 to Sunday, May 15, 2022 are a little earlier then our usual weekend dates. We have listed a few update items so members know the planning stages. As with all our club events, Black Rock will also be restricted to following all Provincial Covid gathering regulations in place at the time of the event. It is important as a Club that we attract as much membership attendance and support for this event and all our events that VIR Executives and members organize in order to keep our chapter moving forward, and raise funds for the charities too! Black Rock 2022 Charity Event Registration: Registration will open in late February, date for registration opening will be updated on the VIR website / Black Rock tab, Porscher newsletter and Garth’s Club emails. Registration will be the same as in the past on the Motorsportreg.com website. Please make sure you are registered as a VIR PCA member on MSR before February. Registration will allow you to choose any of the organized events and activities. Please review the supplied schedule on the MSR page for the complete list of activities and events location, time and date. We will also be selling 2022 Black Rock T-Shirts and Sport Shirts in both ladies and men sizes. We encourage all attendees to consider purchasing an item as this helps us fund the event as well as helps our charities. Black Rock Oceanfront Resort: We have a contract in place for Thursday, May 12, to Sunday, May 15, 2022. These dates will include facilities for our Welcome Reception, Saturday evening Banquet, and Sunday Brunch. The resort has limited our seating capacity to 120 attendees. It has given the Club a special room rate pricing for the 3-night stay, so please make sure you indicate that you are with the Vancouver Island Porsche Club when booking your accommodations. The prices will also be listed on the MSR registration page. Also be aware that you must register separately for Black Rock on MSR, and at the Black Rock Oceanfront Resort for your accommodaVANCOUVER ISLAND — PORSCHER

Black Rock Survey We would like to thank everyone that completed the Black Rock survey. We are now reviewing the results, which will help us plan and schedule our track and other events with regards to attendees’ preference. Charities We are supporting both our previous charities - Cops for Cancer “Tour de Rock” and the Ucluelet Volunteer Fire Brigade. The UVFB will also be helping us with our Friday night BBQ and as in the past this will be by donation per person at the BBQ, to the UVFB. Planning Next Stages Planning is on-going for the committee. Some of the next stages are to finish registration website, fundraising, sponsorship, track and instructor organizing, Ucluelet activity organizing, etc. With everyone’s support this will be another memorable VIR event and enjoyable get together for all.

VIR Website Update Back in April 2021 we launched our new website. Since then it continues to be improved and additions made. The latest is our new Community Page which you can find under About Us. The community page was created to highlight our work in raising funds for different charities throughout Vancouver Island. They include the Cops for Cancer/tour de rock, Ucluelet Volunteer Fire Brigade, various food banks, and other charities. You can find more details on the website. A few features that you may be interested in are the photo galleries from past events and checking out the calendar of events to see what is coming up, both on Vancouver Island and in other regions that are open to our members. One of my favourites is to peruse the old newsletters that go back to when our region was first created in 1996, makes for interesting reading and you may recognize some of the members that are still active today. A reminder that a lot of content on the website is available to members only so you will need to register to get the full benefit. When you do register and create your profile don’t forget to post a picture of your car. I see a lot of registered members have not done this. It is very easy to login and update your profile to keep it current.
I encourage you to take a look at the website to keep up to date on club activities and give us feedback. https://virpca.org:452/VIRPCA/Home The website is maintained by our webmaster Dave Nickel along with the developer Karl Hoerner - both are club members and volunteers. If you have any questions about the website and its content please contact Dave at webmaster@virpca.org and he will be happy to assist you.

Last year ended on a quiet note with the Totem Rally being cancelled and being unable to attend the Big White Rally due to road closures. At the time of writing I have prepared for the Thunderbird Rally, but the event dates have been tentatively pushed out … so it’s anyone’s guess as to whether the rally will actually take place. We started off the year with the Alcan Rally Presentation – two 944’s to Alaska. We had
about 18 registered, but likely more attended as the link was shared on FaceBook. Questions and lively discussion at the end and interest to attend rallies. I also received follow-up mails and regrets from those that missed the presentation. The club executive has been planning events for the year and that will again include two dates for our rallies….. so…. Save the Dates! Spring Rally Sunday 5 June Fall Rally Sunday 25 September
I look forward to two competitive events and the challenge for the annual trophy. This year we have invited the Canada West Region (Vancouver) to join our rallies. Given that their club is almost double ours, I would hope that some of their members are able to make the trip to the island. At this stage there is an indication that other Classic Rallies might be held in summer and we are looking forward to actually holding the Totem Rally in November. As usual I am open to any questions or event ideas.

December 5 Holiday Dinner in Victoria
South Island Director Ron Dempsey and Uplands Golf Club in Oak Bay hosted our first Holiday Dinner in 2 years, with 75 Porsche and European Car enthusiasts in attendance. Over $7,000 was raised for CFAX Santa's Anonymous, helping families in need around the South Island with Christmas presents and food hampers during the festive season. We were fortunate to have Victoria residents Chris and John Beresford (pictured below with Garth and Ron) present over dinner, recounting their adventures in the 2018 Peking to Paris Rally in a 1958 VW Beetle. Incredible scenery, variable roads and amazing endurance for over 30 days made for an amazing journey - and inspired more than a few folks in attendance to plan something in 2022, albeit less ambitious! Feedback from the event was tremendous, so mark the first Sunday in December 2022 on your calendars, and details will be shared next fall.

Inaugural ‘VanIsle Adventure Tour’ event planned for June 24-25 South Island Director Ron Dempsey is planning a new type of event for our membership at the beginning of the summer driving season. The ‘VanIsle Adventure Tour’ is part rally, part tour and part social gathering. Based on similar exotic and collector car events held around the world, an Adventure Tour is a multi-day driving event, tailor-made for a driver and codriver who enjoy spending time together and with other like-minded enthusiasts. The keystone of an Adventure Tour is the route book. Like a TSD rally, it has directions to be followed on twisty, fun roads. Unlike a TSD however, participants dictate whatever speed they feel comfortable driving and stopping when and where they like – for pictures, snacks or a bio-break. This year’s inaugural event is planned to begin on the morning of Friday, June 24, and to wrap up on the afternoon of Saturday, June 25. The route won’t be known by participants until the beginning of the event, nor will the host hotel or it’s whereabouts. The focus is on adventure, discovering new places and making new friends – all while enjoying your vehicle on roads it was designed to drive. For more information, there will be a zoom webinar Wednesday, February 16 at 7pm. Event organizer Dave Hord of Hagerty and Classic Car Adventures will discuss more about the event, how to prepare, and what to look forward to your first time out.

The 4th Annual Secret Santa was organized by me at our usual Cars & Coffee on the 2nd Saturday of the month. We had 14 members join us at Crown Isle Resort, the Atrium Room for visiting, plus I and some other members challenged the members with some Porsche questions. The winners were given to opportunity to pick an item from under the beautiful Christmas tree. I had some Goodies from Porsche Centre Victoria, some beer steins I have been collecting and a few other goodies. The lunch was excellent and I believe everyone ordered dessert, well I know I did! After lunch, members were able to choose a gift from “Santa” under the Christmas tree. When everyone had chosen their gift, other members could exchange a gift from a member, then everyone got to unwrap their gift. There was some wine, Beer Steins, a handknitted toque and other goodies. Everyone was happy with their gift from “Santa”. Thank you to all of you that attended, I certainly had fun, and I think everyone enjoyed as well. Wishing you all a Happy and Healthy 2022

The 959 - Part 1 While recently doing research to produce the Tech Quiz for Suncoast’s 60th Anniversary Celebration I relived some of my fondest Porsche memories as I perused long-closed and stored reference books and manuals.
To this day, I’m still at awe of some of the special vehicles that were produced in an artisanal manner by that small German company we have come to know and love. But none come close to my fondness of the very special 959. Let me try to condense some of the data I found: First shown as a static design study forty years ago, in 1981, it received the designation 959 and became the first member of a new and exclusive category of ‘Supercars’, road legal vehicles with a top speed in excess of 200mph, state of the art design features and price tags to match. The study was based on the 911 which would be developed into a “Gruppe B” rally car. In 1986 three 959 project cars made their debut in the ParisDakar rally, which they won (finishing one/two – the third entry, intended as a support vehicle, finished 6th). More successes followed and a limited production of 250 cars was announced which would be available for sale as road cars to an exclusive and very lucky few. The initial price tag was around US$250,000. (Even by today’s standards, this was an absolute bargain.) The initial price also included a visit to the Nürburgring Circuit for a factory-run familiarization course, because this was no ordinary vehicle. The engine was a special short-stroke 2.85L flat-6 with titanium rods and crankshaft and air -cooled cylinder barrels but with water-cooled heads. Each head had four valves per cylinder and was operated by double overhead camshafts. Twin KKK turbochargers would VANCOUVER ISLAND — PORSCHER
February 2022 Page 31
boost maximum output to 450bhp at 6500rpm with peak torque of 370lb/ft coming in at 5500rpm. All this produced a top speed of 205mph at 7500rpm and a 0-60 time of 3.7 seconds. Two versions of the car were built. The ‘Comfort’ model included A/C and additional sound insulation and the ‘Sport’ version which omitted these, along with the rear seats and other such niceties to provide raw performance. An all-new four-wheel drive transmission was used with a conventional mid-mounted sixspeed gearbox connected to a front transaxle by a large tube housing the driveshaft. The front differential casing also housed a torque-splitting clutch. A new computer control system, monitored electronic signals generated by sensors which offered engine speed, throttle position and wheel speed. The latter was derived from the same sensors that controlled the ABS. The computer could calculate rate of acceleration and thereby the weight transfer front-to-rear could be mapped. With the rear wheels directly driven, the front axle torque could be varied by the computer to give optimum traction and could be controlled manually by the driver or using one of four pre-programmed modes to assist in varying road conditions offering a variable front/rear split percentage between 40/60 and 20/80 depending on the road conditions. The system had a response time between 50 and 100 milliseconds.
The body was basically that of a 911 Turbo, with galvanized steel components and additional body panels made from Kevlar and other glass-reinforced plastic (GRP) materials. The windscreen was bullet-proof. Braking components came from the 956 racecar and were servo-operated with full anti-lock capability. VANCOUVER ISLAND — PORSCHER

The suspension was coil spring/double wishbone design right out of the racecars. Concentric coil springs were used together with twin shock absorbers on each wheel. Each shock absorber had electronically-adjustable variable damping circuitry allowing for computercontrol which could vary not only the car’s ride height, but also the angle of the body relative to the road. This further enhanced the ground-effect generated by underbody airflow and added yet more stability to the handling. Providing adequate cooling provided a difficult hurdle which was solved with the now iconic rear wing air scoops which would channel cool air into the very tightly packed engine bay. The car was also shod with magnesium wheels with hollow spokes for a tiredeflation warning system. This was the precursor of the TPMS. Simply, an outstanding piece of engineering. And it was also quite the eye-candy too! In a future article, we’ll get to “the rest of the story”. The 959 in America. I am so fond of it that I now own an orange version of the 959. It’s a paint-to-sample gifted to me by my talented granddaughter Sofia for my birthday!

VIR members Gordon & Farah Halkett report ….. We were in El Gouna (Hurghada area) Egypt recently and drove past a small Porsche showroom, with a bunch of Macans & GTS (all black of course) and this base Taycan for 1.8 Million Egyptian pounds. I forgot my Visa card...so I didn't buy it. Haven’t seen any 911’s - mainly SUVs here and a lot of Chinese made MG cars & SUVs.
Cheers

Frank Jaerschky 250 218 3802 (call or text) For Sale - 911 Nose Mask A friend of mine gave me a single-piece Porsche nose mask (bra) with "PORSCHE" lettered in white. He owned a 911, I think it was a 1984 model and he said he could never fit the mask on his car and maybe I could use it for my 1997 Boxster. I tried but it did not seem to fit my car either. Maybe it would fit a 911 from 1974-1989? It has been sitting in my garage for several years. I would give it to any member. It is free to anyone interested.

For Sale - 2008 Porsche Boxster RS60 for Sale - Engine Failure I was at Area 27 in Sep 2021 when I had a total engine failure. Best guess from the two shops who looked at it was oil starvation in high speed corners. The engine is shot with a cracked block and scoring on the cylinder walls. The engine is beyond repair. It has been reviewed by a Porsche dealership and Alpine Autowerks in Calgary. Alpine looked at the engine and has options for replacement engines. However I've decided after 13 years of enjoyable ownership it is time to drive another Porsche - hopefully a Cayman GT4 - fingers crossed. Would be a good project car for someone. The car is now for sale as is. Exterior and interior are in good condition. Driver seat shows wear. Make me an offer! Would like it to go to someone who will replace the engine and keep it going.
