These days I have been counting my blessings a lot more than before. Like being able to use corrective lenses, living in the city I’m in love with and using FCP’s multicamera editing possibilities. If you have had the pleasure to shoot with multiple cameras,

64 Tutotial

look no further than FCP and its ability to link up to 128 clips and playback up to 16 at a time realtime. It’s a real brain kick being able to pick shots like they were flavoured varieties of candy.

Multicam Editing

Let’s get started. First up, Import the clips that you know are from two different cameras of the same take of the same shot. This is important because you don’t want to make a multiclip of clips from two different takes and realize that your actor laughed too soon in one of the shots. A few ways to ensure you are picking the right shots is to use clapper boards. To make your life easier trying to sync, use a visual and sound cue on set, based on which the clips may be married together. My sound cue were my squeaky calls for action and my actor’s (who is also the producer of the film by the way) first ‘ss’ as the first line of dialogue begins with a ‘so what’.

Creative freedom – The most creative results are usually achieved when the artists are given full creative control of their projects. Artists sometimes find themselves more like robots following instructions. This usually occurs when the decision makers are not a part of the creative team but are part of the creative process. It puts the artists in a position that limits their input and output. A good situation is usually when the decision maker is a part of the creative team or the decision maker allows his creative team to have their input rather than just focus on execution.

We believe there are 3 key elements.

Technology

Creativity It happened during the Super Bowl with a 60-second Orwellian epic, directed by Ridley Scott in which a young woman lobs a hammer at a big screen image of Big Brother, AKA George Orwell’s ‘1984.’ As one industry guru put it, “The commercial changed advertising; the product changed the ad business; the technology changed the world.” The product, of course, has transformed our industry but has our ability to embrace new technology also changed and does the creative industry pay enough attention to the developments in new products coming on to the market? Conversely are the manufacturers missing a marketing opportunity by not reaching out to the creative houses and their respective production studios?

In the 1970’s creatives did not trust technology, so much so that whilst the rest of an office was working on their IBM desktops, creative types were still using typewriters and X-ACTO knives. That was until 1984 when Apple introduced the Mac.

For me I’m stuck in a paradox (hence the need to pen my frustrations). On the one hand beginning the creative process with a blank sheet of paper and a big black pencil is the only starting point. However, at the click of a button the Internet will give inspiration to a hundred ideas and the creative tools will multiply what can be done with those ideas. Furthermore, with the constant influx of new products, new marketing platforms, new printing procedures, new cameras and new software there is a very real danger of getting completely overwhelmed and loosing the ability to create originality. To illustrate my conundrum, Leo Burnett works on a major telco brand and to be able to promote the product we must understand how consumers are using their mobile phones. Except we are always playing catch-up – We have to go online and into the blogosphere, research trends in more developed markets and understand the limitations for our own region.

KNOW HOW Technology vs Creativity

For example, the iphone has so many applications that it has been solely responsible for doubling global ad-spend in mobile marketing and developers are now designing these applications with the brands in mind. But just because we can do something with technology does not necessarily mean it’s a good idea and out of the many branded applications, how many actually stick? So by ignoring the novelty of games and the like, we should start by pouring our efforts into the idea and then working out how the technology can make it work. For example, Charmin’s ingenious SitorSquat application allows users to find nearby restrooms. This is what Leo Burnett would call an ‘Act’ – a gesture that adds actual value and transcends the notion of an everyday ‘ad’. In this instance the idea came first and it was based on customer insight rather than the technology behind it. On the other hand, some time ago we were asked to develop a storyboard for a TVC under ridiculous time constraints. To add to the pressure, this was a client with a multi-agency roster and we had to stake our claim. So we sat around the table and began brainstorming, coincidently with production also in the room – the idea was great but the execution did not do it justice and it was suggested that the storyboard be created using iMovie. This brought the idea to life and allowed the client to not just imagine the TVC but actually envisage the final outcome.

From this moment forward production has been involved in any idea generation right from the outset, not just to advise on the latest developments in Apple’s software but to consult on new machines and technology that have come to market and more frequently in regards to digital printing – opening up new ideas that affect and sometimes change the creative idea completely. What it highlights is the need for integration. Not in the sense that the agency can offer every marketing medium under the sun but integration in the sense that every department is present at the planning stage. A good example is a small independent agency in London, which when pitching for a kids adventure playground, hired a clown as a consultant during the process. It was not for a laugh – they genuinely wanted to know what they could never find out through research. The same is true for creativity and technology. It does not matter what you know, but realising what you don’t know and making sure those gaps are filled with the relevant expertise. Something only a truly integrated agency could possibly achieve.

It does not matter what you know, but realising what you don’t know and making sure those gaps are filled with the relevant expertise.

Which is a game he used to play with his brother, as a child. In short, you start off by drawing an abstract shape on a piece of paper and then pass it on to a friend, your colleague, or even some random person sitting next to you at your local Starbucks, sipping on their latté. The other person, then, using a different coloured pen transforms the ‘nothing’, into a ‘something’. The ‘twitter’ syndrome seems to have left cyber space and is all around me. Every creative I have met during the past few weeks and months talks about Shelter. A couple of days ago I was at the Mall of the Emirates and decided to check out the ‘Shelter’ everybody was talking about. I must say I had heard so much about it that I already had very high expectations.

So what is it? Shelter is a medium for forward thinkers, creatives and intellectuals to connect and exchange ideas; converting those interactions into commercial services and products through subsidized work spaces. In my opinion networking and interacting with other creatives is one of the most essential parts for succeeding in the creative industry. Having said that, I think Shelter is the best place to start networking, especially if you are new to the Dubai market and in need of connecting with other creatives, that can help you develop any ideas you may have. Interestingly enough I discovered that the American typography artist Ebon Heath and the Lebanese/Australian jewelry designer,

Digital Image Production: A Philosophical Approach

KNOW HOW Digital Image Production

If you have a yearning to take your photography to another level, start here. Whether you are newly rapt by the ‘image’ document (virtual and physical) or your addiction has been lingering, you are positively a part of the tectonic developments occurring in this field. Image Production has gone through a whole host of changes and movements. These transformations are creating a new architecture for the field of photography. The first photographic image intentionally produced required an eight-hour exposure time in bright sunlight and access to specialized tools and materials, which were available to only a privileged few. Technologies today allow for a multi-surface approach to the production of the image, re-appropriating the spirit of adventure that once belonged only to analogue photo-production. A photographer can begin with something and nothing. Your tools are as complex or as simple as you make or want them to be. An exquisite image can be produced using a biscuit tin or high-res, gigapixel digital equipment. This is a democratization of the image itself. With this in mind, when it comes to image production, your limitations are those that you set for yourself. Defining the Image Itself. The frame (still or moving) is a place where you can invite the viewer to inhabit real space and a multitude of autonomous spaces that are not subject to the laws of the real but are still strongly related to it. The framed ‘screen’ knits together surfaces, time and place in one material position for the viewer, and as such is able to invite another time and another place

into the external environment of the viewer. The viewer is at once frozen in space and moving through time in a trade-off demanded by you, the producer of the image. Reflect on this remarkable simultaneity, because this is where the true nature of the image itself lies.

Pre-production: What’s Your Objective? Think about the relational interaction of the work, the intended user and the different spaces of intended use. Take into account that external, physical space is segmented, and subject to various constraints and restraints. Evident in that space are the intermingling relational lines that unify different external spaces, all of which are regimented by the contemporary hegemonic power machinations.

no dimensions if it is not accessed, and yet, if it is, it need not have a beginning or an end. Any dimensions will fade away when the intended user is able to move, copy, enlarge or reduce the scale of the images. Images may be parsed and unparsed if they are digitally forwarded through virtual space and may continue a life of their own through time in the space of the WWW. The material presentation of the produced work will change with each passing second and with each individual physical environment. Texture, Time and Colour. The nature of digital production allows more freedom for the Creative. Invention will not be inhibited by factors such as money, space, control or censorship in the same way that it may be in the physical world. There is immense potential for the creative assemblage by means of the use of colour, texture and time.

>>>

Consider Your Environment. The use of computer screens requires human interactions in external space and results in movements both virtual and material. For example, the architecture of a ‘virtual gallery’ allows the intended user to wander around with few limitations beyond those set by the producer, including constraints related to the users movements (e.g. clicking of the ‘mouse’). User, Screen, Image. The virtual image has

Digital Image Production: A Practical Approach “phos” (light)+”graphis” (stylus/paintbrush)= ’drawing with light’ Get to know your Camera. As you learn to experiment and play with your camera controls, you will progressively see them for the invaluable tools that they are. Leave the fear behind, let go, experiment and invent. The controls are not a barrier; they will help you to know what you can do and how you will be able to do it. De-mystify the controls by taking them on. Figure 1 Digital Image Production

Key Camera Controls: Shutter, Exposure. The shutter setting determines exposer time or how much light you use to ‘paint’ your image. As the shutter opens and closes, the sensor will record two things: all light and all movement. You will notice an improvement in your photographs if you try using longer exposure time. This is because you will be able to introduce movement and richer colours into your compositions, both of which are lost when applying short exposures. Depth of Field. A lot of us are seduced by the digital mediums ability to produce an extensive depth of field. The visual affect of this is a flat composition, where everything is crisp and sharp. Experimenting with a smaller depth of field adds dimensionality and

interest to your photographic compositions. Try decreasing the depth of field by controlling aperture, focal length and magnification. Think about how humans see, and try to pay attention to what you can see. When you look at something, the closer your eyes are to what you are looking at, the more of it is in focus. The further you are from your subject, or what you are looking at, the less of it is in focus. In reality, only a small percent of what we see is sharp and in focus. As our eyes move from scene to scene they are constantly re-focusing. Don’t forget that pre-production considerations of the intended size of the image will influence the perception of the depth of field by your viewer.

ISO. Photographers who use or have used film will be familiar with the concept of ‘grain’. Increased film sensitivity will increase the graininess of the final image. In digital image production, the equivalent of ‘grain’ is ‘noise’. Digital noise is more complex and variegated than film grain. Digital noise results in random specs that have no relation to the intended photocomposition. Noise can be used in the same way that grain is used in film. A higher ISO setting or lower pixel count will increase digital noise and can be used to give the subject a ‘truth-value’. Resolution. The first thing to be said about ‘high resolution’ is that it’s not always what

it says on the label. Images taken at a highresolution are made up of a lot of pixels, but do not necessarily have a better resolution. Keep in mind those essential elements, like the lens you use, will affect the actual quality of your images. Colour Space. The reproduction of accurate colour relies on which sensor used, precise white balance, the choice of ink and paper (if intending to print) and correctly calibrating production devices. become a second observer of your subject. Most cameras will be set to the sRGB (standard red green blue colour space) because that is the default for Internet use, computer screens and average quality printing. Learning about Adobe RGB and Adobe Wide Gamut RGB may be more useful to you, as both of these are larger colour space and will enable you to achieve richer colours. If you want to broaden your knowledge and not stick to the ‘default’ mentality, read more in the Adobe white paper on colour management. The white paper defines colour management and takes you step by step into the what, why and where of colour management.

Decisions about colour space are better left to post-production editing when it is easier to evaluate images using a high quality screen. This is only possible when shooting in RAW format. RAW. The RAW format is image data with no in-camera processing or compression. It’s always best to shoot in RAW format. If you shoot in JPEG format your image is already processed and compressed. Shooting in RAW allows for vital editing post-production. You can download the latest RAW plug-in from www.adobe.com. At a resolution of 10x megapixels, a 2 GIG SD card will store around 380 images in JPEG. At the RAW setting the same space will store around 80 images, so be prepared with more storage if you use RAW. Shooting in RAW gives you better quality photographs because it will allow you to have more control over colour space, saturation, gradation, sharpness, white balance and tonal values in post-production editing. RAW files are made up of uncompressed data that enable more creative freedom than the highest quality JPEG files. There is no one single RAW format. Never manipulate original RAW files, always save the manipulated image data as a new file.

PHOTO SHOOT Night shots: Choose a spot in town where you can find coloured night-lights. Be sure to choose somewhere safe to walk around and shoot. Capture your cities unique environment using different ISO and white balance settings. Tips: • Use Juxtaposition on the same composition plane

• • • •

creates interest Vary the exposure for the same composition to learn about tonal variation Contrast sharp details with the blur of moving image to create emphasis Use the colour of the evening sky as a backdrop to lights in the foreground Diagonal lines lead the viewers eyes into your composition • Look for shadows/texture in order to create a dramatic composition • Experiment with longer exposure time, start with 1/10th of second and go longer using a tripod or a steady surface where you can set your camera • Check out the work of Rut Blees Luxemburg, Arthur Fellig and Brassai

Working with RAW files requires a lot of storage space and has the drawback of a slower workflow, but is worth the patience for greater creative control. There are several RAW data converters to choose from. You can find more information about the most common of these programmes at www. phaseone.com, www.dxo.com, www.apple. com and www.adobe.com

DAJANI “Horses brought me to the Middle East !” In 2007 I started a photographic project on the theme of the Arabian horse. I was living in Stockholm and took 2 months out to return to Jordan. Little did I know that this project would change so much for me.

I was born in England, to a Palestinian father and English mother, and spent my early formative years moving between the Middle East and Europe. Although I grew up with a strong interest in the visual arts and music, I initially pursued a possible career in engineering. I soon realized that this route wouldn’t fulfill my creative needs, so I changed direction and took up photography instead. I worked as a commercial photographer first in London for 4 years, then in Stockholm for another 6 years, shooting for advertising agencies and design companies. Alongside the commercial work, I continued to develop my personal artwork, which has been described as focusing on notions of identity and belonging. The Arabian horse shoots went well and I got results I was pleased with. In addition to my time in Jordan I visited Dubai and discovered that there were certain opportunities in the Middle East that I wouldn’t have elsewhere, and that my mixed ArabEuropean background, education and training were well suited for living and working in this region.

Plus there are the horses! The project that I started grew into large body of photographic artwork that attracted global attention and a year later resulted in several exhibitions in art galleries in Stockholm, Amman, Dubai and Bahrain.

The Arabian is the oldest and purest breed of horse in the world. Its importance in the history and culture of the ancient Middle East and Arabia cannot be underestimated. Originally bred by the nomadic Bedouin tribes as a horse to be used in battle, the pure-blooded Arabian evolved over hundreds of years into a creature of beauty and strength. The care of the Bedouins for their horses, coupled with the harsh conditions of the environment produced an animal of distinctive intelligence and sensitivity, whose power and stamina enabled it to endure the harshest conditions and demands. War and religious conquests played an important role in ensuring the global influence of the Arabian and it can now be found in the bloodlines of nearly every modern light horse breed. While the importance and usefulness of the horse gradually declined with the advent of technology, the Arabian horse remains a symbol of pride and a measure of historical and cultural importance to the Arab World. A life-long fascination with these magnificent creatures eventually led me to photographing them. My approach is quite different from the average equestrian sports or press photographer. I use whatever

photographic and digital post-production tools and skills are necessary to achieve the result. The horse is a large animal with long slender legs and a body shape that doesn’t lend itself to easy composition. While it can look magnificent in motion, it often looks plain when standing still. Some effort has to go into getting the horse into a pleasing position with an interesting expression or attitude. I’m never in a hurry and take my time working with the animal’s natural posture and movements until something suddenly clicks into place. There are various tricks of course to get an otherwise bored horse to perk up. Bringing a pretty mare out tends to work a treat with a hot-blooded stallion! Producing photographs that are visually pleasing as decorative art is not enough for me. I try to produce something that has some ‘soul’ or feeling to it. As somebody once said: low art is telling the night as it is, high art gives the feeling of the night. While I strive to produce the best photographic images I can, on occasion they are not always technically perfect. Sometimes, however, it is a technical ‘mistake’ that makes a particular photograph unique and special. After all, the camera and the lens are just tools; it is the mind that ‘sees’ and the heart that feels.

Q&A

How did you start?

I’ve always been obsessed with art and design and when I started my studies at university this obsession grew and I discovered my passion towards typography and especially Arabic typography. I didn’t get the chance to work in Lebanon because I moved to Doha directly after graduation. I started to experience the tough and hard reality of working for real clients, however, I managed to figure out some ways to produce good work and satisfy the client and myself. I do feel though that although it has been less than 2 years, there is still lots to discover in myself and in others.

What is the idea behind your work? Whatever the project is, I always try to reveal my own identity and my own perception.

How do you work? I see, research, inspire, sketch...and sometimes I don’t! There is no specific strategy in my work because sometimes you just have the concept in your head and other times you spend more time coming up with a new concept.

What challenges did or do you face with your projects? Challenges are always there to make you go on and overcome them. If there is no challenge, there is no success!

What do you use for executing your ideas? Mixed media. Most of the times Adobe software.

How do you promote your Where do you find work? inspiration? I enjoy working with Arabic typography which is very flexible and I can easily get inspired by anything that my eyes see.

Mainly I use flickr.com, I started my own blog as well but I need to have more free time to work on it. http://k-mostafa.blogspot.com

Which project are you most proud of and why? Even with my small experience I have managed to work on some big projects here in Doha ( Dohaland, Heart of Doha, QGBC,..), but still I am most proud of my senior graduation project that I did at university. The project was a book (Cliché), about Lebanon. It’s a graphical presentation of Lebanese Clichés denoting the negative side of it. The book is about me and my society and I am proud of it.

Simulate Fractals in Photoshop A fractal is generally “a rough or fragmented geometric shape that can be split into parts, each of which is (at least approximately) a reducedsize copy of the whole,” a property called self-similarity. Roots of mathematical interest on fractals can be traced back to the late 19th Century, the term however was coined by Benoît Mandelbrot in 1975 and was derived from the Latin fractus meaning “broken” or “fractured.” A mathematical fractal is based on an equation that undergoes iteration, a form of feedback based on recursion. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fractal

IN THIS TUTORIAL WE SHOW YOU HOW TO CREATE THESE FASCINATING GEOMETRIC OBJECTS USING PHOTOSHOP ONLY!

KNOW HOW Adobe Photoshop CS4/3

2

The whole effect starts with a plain circle. To create a circle use the Ellipse tool. To create a perfect circle press shift while drawing.

1

Open Photoshop’s CS3 or CS4 and create a new document. As usual you have to decide whether you want to create for web or print. In this case I chose the size 25 cm x 29 cm and a resolution of 300 dpi to fit a full page in Media Production Magazine.

4

5

Add some texture to the circle. For this design i chose styroform.

3

Now give the circle an organic feel. The reason why I chose Photoshop to create this effect is because of Photoshop’s very flexible layer style. To open the layer style panel double click on the layer itself and select drop shadow. Set the parameters distance and spread to 0% because we want the shadow to go all around the object.

6

Last but not least i added a gradient in overlay mode to give wrap up the organic feel.

9

After removing the triangle layer, you should have something like as shown in the picture above.

Apply now Bevel and emboss to create a 3D ish look. Set the parameter soften to max.

7

Make a new layer ctrl/apple + shift + n, and select the polygone tool. Since we want to create a triangle select in the options bar at the top of your document 3 sides.

8

Place the triangle in the centre of the circle. Copy the circle by pressing ctrl/apple + t and align it center with the corners of the triangle.

42 43

10

11 Merge the 4 circle layer by pressing ctrl/apple + n and move it to the top of your document.

NOTE ctrl/apple + alt + shift + t Photoshop takes the previous values of the Free Transform and apply them to the new object.

13

Now we are going to use another shortcut which is very useful when working with duplication. Press ctrl/apple + alt + shift + t to apply the transform again command.

16

Now press ctrl/apple + alt + t to transform a copy of the 4 circle layer. Resize the new object by pressing the shift button while dragging. Let go of the shift button and then rotate the copy a few degrees Clockwise.

14

After repeating this command several times you should have something as shown above. You might have noticed that PS creates for every copy a new layer. Merge these layers by using the shortcut ctrl/apple +e .

12

After doing that move the transform center out of the transform box, as this will be the reference point for the following duplicates of your object, then press enter.

15

Now create two guides to mark the center of the page. Place your object in one quarter, as shown above.

Use the shortcut ctrl/apple + alt + t to transform a copy.

17

Use the shortcut ctrl/apple + alt + shift + t to create the missing two copies. You see this shortcut accelerates your workflow immensely and you will find yourself using it even more in future.

KNOW HOW Adobe Photoshop CS4/3

18

This step is similar to step 11 but this time you only press ctrl/apple + alt + t and rotate 45 degrees. To do that press shift and rotate.

20

To make the end result more interesting colourize this copy by using the hue and saturation panel. To open this panel and apply the colour changes press ctrl/apple + u. Once you are happy with the colour, apply by pressing enter.

23

Repeat step 11 to 13

21

24

19

Repeat step 18 and 20

Again Photoshop creates a new layer. Double click on the new layer to open layer styles and add drop shadow.

22

Repeat step 18 and 20

Repeat step 11 to 13

25

This is the end result for now. Of course you can use this as a new object and start again from step 11. I hope you enjoyed this tutorial. MP Mag wishes you lots of fun with these new techniques.

WHO’S HOT AND WHO’S NOT Social Networking as business strategy Corporations increasingly see social media as key communication and marketing tools. We want to look at today’s most popular social networking platforms and see how creative professionals can benefit from participating.

Facebook Facebook is as of 2009 the most visited social networking platform worldwide. I have joined the club about two years ago, after resisting for quite some time. In the end I received so many invitations that I felt like I was missing out on something and joined eventually. I spent hours and hours on it to catch up with old classmates I haven’t seen in ages, caught up on the latest gossip and made some interesting business acquaintances. But after some time the enthusiasm decreased and I am left with the thought that Facebook’s strongest attraction is only the number of members. Like so many other people, I have been put off a little lately by spam applications, zombie invitations and the fact that people who have nothing to say do it anyway. The question how useful Facebook really is at the end of the day for your business purposes is questionable? At first I found it quite convenient to have friends and business contacts all under one roof. A year and 1 million status updates later, I have doubts. Especially, if I think about how drastically my opinion and trust in certain colleagues and

REVIEW Social Networking

business contacts has changed. Nevertheless, Facebook is still a great way to stay or get in touch. It’s easy to set up a page, event or group about your company or website and share it a vast amount of people.

MySpace MySpace is famous for its ugly user pages, its culture of connecting to thousands of your “closest friends” and its reputation as “the muso platform”. Personally I’m not a fan of MySpace, in fact I hate it with great passion. And yet every time I write about social media platforms it slips in as the site artists, especially music-related, need to be on. I also find myself in the same dilemma every time I do so because I can’t give you relevant arguments. The tools MySpace offers to musicians are far better elsewhere, there is very little conceptional thinking and organization behind most profiles and I have witnessed very few productive and relevant conversations so far. However, it does have the numbers once again. With a population of over 100 million people and about 810 million visits every month it still is THE online community for music interested people, whether you like it or not.

The youngest of the “in platforms” is also the simplest. Once you have joined the club you will get one tool: a text box that holds a maximum of 140 characters with the question “What are you doing?”. Now unless you are David Copperfield or a mighty dragon warrior please don’t answer the question! I honestly doubt that anyone has the slightest urge to know what flavor your tea has this morning, when you take a nap, not even who you are meeting for lunch (unless it is Brad Pitt). The most interesting twitterers I have come across so far are the ones who ask questions, post links to interesting websites or videos or offer some tips and advice. For creatives I like the “brainstorming touch” twitter has. Don’t go there and expect to be mentally stimulated or challenged, 140 characters hopefully won’t do that for you. But I know many colleagues who get on twitter if they are stuck with a project and come back with plenty of creative ideas.

I initially found LinkedIn quite restrictive because you have to actually be somehow related to a person you want to connect with. Either you belong to the same group, get introduced through one of your contacts or know the person’s email address. But after using it for a while I started to appreciate that fact, because it is very likely that people actually know their entire network and have “real-life” relationships with them, which makes it a whole lot more relevant. You might find that 70 connections on LinkedIn might do more for your professional career than 7,000 on MySpace.

LinkedIn Yes I said Linked in! I know many creative people argue that it is too business minded and not creative enough but that’s not the point. It is an excellent tool for research, building an online portfolio black on white and meeting like-minded people from similar industries. To give you a quick example, when I did some research for this article I posted the question “How useful do you find Facebook/ LinkedIn “ in 3 relevant groups on Facebook and 3 on LinkedIn. Within 24 hours I had 18 serious and very helpful replies on LinkedIn and 1 on Facebook, completely ignoring the question and asking me to look at his portfolio instead.

To give you some insights from other creative professionals, here are some of the answers I received in the Question/Answer section of LinkedIn: “I really appreciate LinkedIn for this very purpose. Being a self-employed freelance professional can lead to major isolation. But LinkedIn groups provide an excellent forum where I can get answers to questions, network with other professionals in my field, and pick up advice about relevant topics like business, and even design related specifics.” Joel Glovier, Freelance Design / Consulting Professional “Networks like this are a necessary evil for artists. Developed by brothers Lars and Jens Rasmussen (the original creators of Google Maps) and Stephanie Hannon, who have been secretly working on the project out of Google’s Sydney offices for the past 2 years. The projects code name Walkabout, which is an Australian aboriginal tradition for taking a journey to trace the songlines that their ancestors took and learn the world anew, is very appropriate for the world’s most innovative communications and collaborations tool since the invention of the internet. Or as Lars Rasmussen put it, “Wave is what email would look like if it were invented today.”

Google Wave

At last weeks’ Google I/O conference in San Francisco the search engine giant revealed its latest toy – Google Wave.

Functionality and Features Email and instant messaging all in one Google Wave not only erases the distinction between email and instant messaging but let’s us look at online communication from a whole new angle.

Let’s assume you have a message from your work colleague. If both of you are currently online you can simply continue the conversation below the message as you are used to from instant messaging, with one major difference. You don’t have to wait until the other hits send to get to read the message. Google Wave is all about real-time and you can see each letter as the other types them in. Considering how much time we all spend waiting on a chat partner to hit enter, this might be an interesting feature and speed up conversations. A small problem, if you are a bad speller and constantly have to re-write words, but in that case you can simply turn the real time feature off and swap to instant messaging as we know it. In case your colleague isn’t online he/she will receive the message as she would receive an email also with a nice tweak which allows him/her to add her reply right below the message, without having to open a new window as we have to with current email applications. Also responding to particular parts of the message has become clearer.

REVIEW Google Wave

Google Wave is a HTML 5 app and was built on Google’s Web Toolkit with a rich set of open APIs that allow developers to build new extensions and embed waves into other web services. Bloggy – you might have guessed, converts Waves into blogs. People join the conversation by commenting on the blog.

Searchy lets you perform a google search and integrate the content straight away.

Spelly is a great feature which not only looks through a dictionary for spelling (which is what “normal” spell check does) but also looks for context in your sentence.

Developers can build interactive online games which can be played in real-time.

Interactive Games

Linky the link recognition engine that is not only smart enough to recognize a link but also whether the link is a youtube video, a photo or audio file and gives you the option to embed the target into the Wave.

If we now want to add a third person to our conversation we can do that anytime. To help people joining conversations at a later stage, Google Wave has a playback feature, which will replay the exact order of the appearance of each message.

Translate in real time An amazing real-time translation engine that translates the text as you type.

Wave - The Developer platform

Messages can include photos, video and audio, which can be simply added via drag and drop. All participants of the Wave can collaborate to change titles of pictures or videos. Also text content can be edited in wiki-style by anyone participating in the conversation. Each comment is outlined and tagged with the users individual color to make complex conversations relatively clear. Should you want to send a message privately to one participant of a multi-person wave, you can easily break off a private conversation.

Extensions Google developers were extraordinarily original with naming the extensions. Let’s see what Bloggy, Spelly, Linky and their brothers can do.

Google Wave is a HTML 5 app and was built on Google’s Web Toolkit with a rich set of open APIs that allow developers to build new extensions and embed waves into other web services. Google has opened the Google Wave only for developers as of now and is hoping to encourage them to adopt their protocol and wants other providers to adopt Wave as a new fundamental service on the net. “We want it to be an open system like email. We want other services to build Wave services even in competition with Google,” said Lars Rasmussen. Further the team explained that the product is still basically in its infancy and it is up to the independent developers in which direction Wave will transform and how big and useful it will get in the future. Polly lets you incorporate polls into a wave. Twave brings in tweets from your stream and lets you respond from within Wave.

We think it is definitely something to keep an eye on. The first phase is supposed to be available later on this year. By Olivia Zechner

e shot a short film last week on the new JVC HM-700 which we highlighted in our last issue. Aside from the tehcnical details that i will spare you, and the otherwise hectic enviroment of any movie set, the experience was phenomenal. The workflow was nearly as simple as the old joke about the elephant in the fridge in three steps. We shot, we plugged the SDHC card into a reader, we copied and pasted, and shot again. Although I am considering transcoding the footage into a few dfferent formats, the focal point here is not the digital jargon and the number of times per second an editor updates himself on technology. It is in fact the ease with which production and postproduction can be planned and executed.

Without an emotional surge, I digress to add, a convenient workflow not only opens room for creative exploration, it also allows you to dream a little bigger, maybe even more. One such dream that i have had people express often, and that i believe is very much possible is the ambition of building a small scale post-production facility that over time can grow into a bigger service, may be even a post production house. In this article, I will explain, how you may go about doing it, right here in Dubai. Also note, that aside from the legal aspect, most of the discussion below is also applicable to any other part of the Middle East. Tackling the licensing and other legal obligations, the very first concern is with registering the company and the activation (licensing) of the same, both of which are

handled by the Registration and Licensing Department (RLD) of the Dubai Technology and Media Free Zone Authority. A checklist of required documents is available from the RLD depending on the kind of company you are looking to set up. Briefly, you may set up a Free Zone Limited Liability Company (FZ LLC) or the Branch of a foreign company. This article is concerned with setting up an FZ LLC. You will most certainly require the documentation package from TECOM which may be requested via their website tecom. ae. Please note, that I placed a request for it roughly around a month ago. I also spoke with very pleasant people over the phone only to keep waiting for the package. Thankfully, I have sources so the article was underway. The documentation package

includes price lists on registration and the various activtities of a business unit you can obtain license for. As a quick overview, the registration fee is AED 3500 plus allocate another AED 1000 for documents notarization and attestation. You must include all the required documentation in the checklist along with the application as well as a business plan stating your proposed activity; in this case Film Post Production service. The application is submitted to the Regional Sales Manager of the given business unit. Once the Authority approves the business plan and allocates the appropriate location (Media City or otherwise), the documents are forwarded to the RLD for starting up the Incorporation and Licensing procedure (source: Registration and Licensing Department 2008, Registration, Government of Dubai, Dubai, 12 section 1.1). At this stage, the applicant is also provided with a bank letter to open an account in the UAE to deposit share capital. Following the completion of this procedure, the license will be issued. The license for a Film Production/Post Production set up covering up to 5 activities in the segment is priced at AED 15, 000. This brings the grand total cost of taking baby steps with your company at just under AED 20, 000. Though this is not an exact figure, i always like to round off things in the unfavorable direction just in case I encounter hidden costs.

An alternative to setting up an FZ LLC, and my preferred option, is to set up what would be a ‘Post Production Home Studio’ with a freelancer’s license offering you the opportunity to work under a tighter budget. The process is the same in that you must first submit the right documents that are check-listed in the registration document. Allow for AED 1000 for notarization and attestation of the documents. Once approved, a Media City Freelancer license will be issued at AED 7500. At almost half the cost as that of an FZ LLC, you are legally ready to roll. One word of caution however, is that some clients currently prefer working with incorporations/companies as opposed to freelancers when outsourcing activities. I am guessing this may be due to bad past experiences, but there is almost always enough work out there. And if not, at least you are not trying recover twice as much capital.

Now for the real deal. Setting up your Studio. Before you begin, always and I mean always design the layout of the space you are working in, because the last thing you want is to invest in the right equipment but have no idea where to place it, or stumble upon it when in dire need of creativity. It is a good idea to take a bird’s eye view photo of the floor space, calculate the map ratio i.e 1m floor space = 1 cm on photo. Next, using a white board marker, start sketching the possible furniture and equipment layout. Get the help of an interior designer friend - you can’t be living in Dubai and not have one of those. Oooh, bad joke, I do have those.

Bear in mind that you will need space for a desktop machine, the desk, an ergonomic chair with wheels, a shelf for storage of paperwork, hard-drives, basic stationary etc. Make a list of ALL possible requirements. Also decide the length and width of your preferred desk space and what goes on it and what stays off. For example, you may decide to have a spotlight lamp for when you carry out paper work but a better option would be to have one clamped to the wall. JVC GY HM-700

A new camera is a bit like a newborn baby for a lot of filmmakers. Everybody wants to hold it, talk about and spend a lot of time playing with it.

REVIEW JVC GY HM-700

T

here have already been some very interesting technical reviews about it, but nevertheless it’s just a tool for creativity- whether to visualize concepts, to show ideas or to tell stories. In the end this is what really matters and a camera can only help to execute this process. When I said I enjoyed the time with this camera a lot, you can take that literally. Time is a huge saver on this system, based on a native quicktime.mov recording on SDHC cards. What happens is that the new Sony XDCAM EX codec is wrapped into a quicktime file and can

be imported into Final Cut Pro immediately. Even editing from the SDHC card is possible and gives you the fastest possible workflow for postproduction. Now the interesting thing is that JVC combines the strength of all the most recent technologies and offers a seamless bundle. This is something of great benefit to all end-users, which makes life easier and saves a lot of time. This time can be used for being creative with the camera and its features and one of these is the variable frame-rate. Besides the true

24p mode you can also shoot in 720p25/30/50 and 60, which guarantees nice slow motions. In order to immediately test if the slowmotion worked out, there’s a RET button for immediate preview in 25 fps real-time. Besides a huge 4.3” LCD monitor on the camera, there is a beautiful 1.2 Megapixel LCOS (Liquid crystal on silicon) viewfinder. Excellent for focusing, which is a crucial process at any shoot. Since the camera will be shipped with a Canon lens, which has a F-stop of 1.6 throughout the 14 x zoom range, this becomes very handy. Depth of field is

REVIEW JVC GY HM-700

Besides a huge 4.3” LCD monitor on the camera, there is a beautiful 1,2 Megapixel LCOS viewfinder.

guaranteed on a low F-stop and a long focal length and definitely gives an artistic look to the shots. Additionally the macro on the lens gives very interesting possibilities for close-ups and obviously macro shots.

One thing to mention, which is very obvious at first sight, is that the camera is an absolute beauty. Whenever you rock up with this elegant design, it’s an eye-catcher in front of every client or crew.

The camera weighs only about 8 lbs (3.6 kg) and balances great on the shoulder. That means even on long shooting days it doesn’t get tiring at all and you can perform smooth handheld shots over a long period of time. Besides that, it’s easy to balance on a steadicam and works perfectly with smaller semi-professional, and not that expensive, equipment.

Now going back to the specs of the camerathere are 3 truly progressive CCD ‘s, which allow you with offsetting to come to a full 1920x1080 pixel resolution. In my opinion CCD’s aren’t the best solution compared to CMOS, since it’s not the best choice for low light situations. However, having tested the camera quite some time now, I was very satisfied with the picture quality and there wasn’t much grain in the darker parts. Having said that, a good lighting set-up is definitely needed or the quality suffers, as with any other camera.

In reality you can just spend more money on the catering than on the equipment, which makes the crew happy and guarantees that the project becomes a success.

This camera is definitely a great all-rounder for all kinds of shootings. It produces filmlike pictures, which has always been a target of JVC, as shown from its previous GY HD 200 series. You access via a LED ring the menu and can adjust settings like cine-gamma, color matrix, black toe, knee and even color grain. This let’s you customize any preferred look and is flexible for all kinds of different shootings like music videos, short movies and even broadcast TV. The HD-SDI output would even give you uncompressed HD or SD, which is very helpful for any green screen work. Since the codec is based on DV, which offers a limited color sub sampling, it’s definitely the choice to go. So combined with any I/O card this makes magic happen. All in all, besides the really unbelievable fast workflow into Postproduction, the camera is a great all-rounder for professional requirements. It offers a lot of flexibility on set and fulfills the criteria for a smooth and flexible workflow. The inexpensive solution of even hot swappable SDHC cards is a cost and time saver in all aspects. Combined with the right creative force and developed ideas, it supports all aspects of a smooth and creative production. Nevertheless, in the end the creativity is what it comes down to, but with this baby in hand you can look forward to the next mission. Markus Rosentreter

MULTICAM EDITING With Final Cut Pro 6

Let’s get started.

These days I have been counting my blessings a lot more than before. Like being able to use corrective lenses, living in the city I’m in love with and using FCP’s multicamera editing possibilities. If you have had the pleasure to shoot with multiple cameras, look no further than FCP and its ability to link up to 128 clips and playback up to 16 at a time realtime. It’s a real brain kick being able to pick shots like they were flavoured varieties of candy.

1

Cam 1,Scene 12, Shot 3, Take 3

First up, Import the clips that you know are from two different cameras of the same take of the same shot. This is important because you don’t want to make a multiclip of clips from two different takes and realize that your actor laughed too soon in one of the shots. A few ways to ensure you are picking the right shots is to use clapper boards. To make your life easier trying to sync, use a visual and sound cue on set, based on which the clips may be married together. My sound cue were my squeaky calls for action and my actor’s (who is also the producer of the film by the way) first ‘ss’ as the first line of dialogue begins with a ‘so what’.

Cam 2, Scene 12, Shot 3, Take 3

Here i double click each clip to load it in the viewer and then set an in point at the right ‘ss’. It took a few tries before i made a mental note to buy myself a large clapper board to it doesn’t disappear just before the shoot.

KNOW HOW Multicam Editing FCP 6

Now here’s the tricky part. If your film budget allows for it, it is better to have a time-code generator that feeds that info to both cameras and thus be able to sync them with TC precision. However, in my case, you guessed it, one, the budget did not allow for it and two I was working with the super hot and new JVC GY-HM700 so I wasn’t quite keen on experimenting technically. So without a TC generator, you may manually set ‘points’ by which two clips may be synced as multiclips. I have already set ‘in points’ as you say in the last step, further emphasizing the importance of visual and audio cue.

2

Next, select the two clips in the browser and go to the Modify menu and select ‘Make Multiclip’. A multiclip is simply a clip made of different angles. Each clip that you selected for making a multiclip is basically one angle. As mentioned before, because you can have up to 128 angles, a single multiclip may contain that amount of clips.

3

Notice that each clip is assigned an angle name which is just the clip name preceded by a number. Since i have two shots, the angles are 1 and 2.

You will now have a multiclip in your browser with the name of the active angle ahead of it. Double clicking it reveals both clips in the viewer, side by side.

4

Anyway, so instruct FCP to use the in points as a way of linking the clips. The image below also shows ‘grey’ areas in one of the clips and unlike life, these grey areas have a simple meaning: No footage at this point. This just means that the rolls of footage are not of equal length. The bevelled line indicates the sync point so we are currently quite safe as the empty zones fall before the sync point.

Click on each ‘frame’ to notice how the name of the clip updates with the active angle in the browser. Right now, its 329_01 [1] with Mustafa Abbas’s shot selected. When I select the lovely Zoe Harriet, here’s what happens A blue-green line outlines her frame.

5

In reality the blue and green lines are separate strokes indicating the video and audio source. If on set, the mics recorded such that the sound levels for both the talent are the same, you may use the audio track of just one of the angles. Selecting the sync pop up menu reveals the option of picking just video as opposed to video + audio. This just means that when video is selected, the audio will be taken from the last selected source.

64 65

6

In our case, the audio levels were different for each actor so we decided to go with native sound coming from the picked angles hence leaving the option at video+audio at its default. With that decided, Insert or Overwrite the clip into the sequence.

7

The clip sits in the sequence with the active angle visible in the Canvas. Multicamera editing works such that you should be able to pick your angles in real time, during clip playback. For this, the canvas and viewer must be in sync. To ensure this, click on the sync pop up menu of the canvas and select ‘Open’ - a bit like open this in the viewer too.

10 takes priority.

8

Now, if I pick Mustafa’s shot, the sequence will be updated, reflected in the canvas

9

This just means that i can pick angles the same way during playback, however since this is XDCAM footage from the JVC, I lowered my playback quality to prevent in-editing glitches.

Next, simply play the sequence and during the playback pick the angle that fits the dialogue best - this is where the art of editing shines through - deciding whether the dialogue being seen while delivered is more important of if the reaction shot

KNOW HOW Multicam Editing FCP 6

11

As you pick your shots, you will notice markers being set in the timeline.

12

When play back stops, these markers convert into edit points. and Voila! you have

a cool edit.

15

Further tweaks can also be made by changing the timing of the shots. Use the roll tool to shorten one shot while you elongate the adjacent one to keep the sync intact. I like to think of it as dancing with a partner. He takes two steps back, you take two steps forward. Don’t forget to stomp if he’s evil.

13

If you wish to change a shot, simply double click it in the timeline to load it in the viewer and pick a different angle.

16

14

Notice that having done so in my case where i have only two shots means that the adjacent shots for my clip are from the same angle and that’s why you begin to see the ‘through edit’ red marks that indicate that it all really is just one clip.

Once you’re happy with your tweaks and changes, you can sit back and list FCP’s multicamera feature as one of life’s geeky blessings. In the image above I just elongated Mustafa’s shot by 24 frames.

In this one, i shortened it by 16 frames whilst adding 16 frames to the beginning of Zoe’s shot hence keeping the sync in tact.

On a closing note, remember, rules are not always meant to be obeyed, unless its Dubai Police. Go ahead, feel free to sync up random clips (great for music video cutaways), with in points and out, play around, get a feel for the tools and you’ll soon learn, that even randomness has a rhythm. Most importantly, Have Fun.

The Alley was an Official Selection of the Cannes Film Festival in 2007.

Q&A

How did you start?

I started when I was 12 with friends and cousins on weekends shooting random things, with what we liked to believe was an interesting story-line at the time!

What is the idea behind the project? What challenges did you face?

I honestly don’t think there is a business out there with more challenges . Creative challenges, technical challenges and investment challenges.........the list goes on!

I strive to be original as always. If you play it safe, you will never stand out. It’s a thin line between doing that and being practical.

How do you work?

I work with a small team as it helps me keep my focus.

How do you promote your work?

How do I promote my work? That’s actually a good question! Journalists who are really interested in what I do is a great way,and of course film festivals and competitions, local as well as international.

Where do you find inspiration?

I find inspiration anywhere and everywhere. Not necessarily in other films, but more in real-life situations. People are my number one source for inspiration., as well as comic books.

Which project are most proud of and why?

I’m really proud of this last film we’ve made. I wrote and produced it and it has a very different feel and genre than my other films which are more crime-oriented. This is more character-driven and a story on life, relationships and finding oneself. It’s called AtoZ and you’ll hear more about it very soon.

Undo The Jumble Of Cable How and where to start your own professional recording studio.

S

etting up a recording studio can be as easy as drinking water or as difficult as climbing Mount Everest. It all depends on what you want to achieve and what you need the recording studio for. In this issue, we will introduce you to the basic studio setup and the most common audio production applications. Once you have answered these questions you will have a better picture of how your studio should look. The beauty of a recording studio is that you can upgrade it very easily and you rarely replace existing equipment. So it is important for you to understand that you will be working with basic equipment for a while.

So let’s start with building a basic studio setup that caters for all the needs of individual musicians, sound designers, songwriters and commercial music producers.

The Sound Card This is the most crucial part of the audio signal processing. The sound card (audio interface or I/O) determines the audio quality, meaning the level of digital noise and the resolution of the digital signal. Another issue is the latency, meaning the time a signal needs to be converted to a digital signal and from a digital signal to an analogue signal, that can be heard on your speakers or headphones.

I remember a time in college where people had this competition of, “who has the fastest sound card!” A low latency is very important when working with live recording. This means if you have a singer singing along with the recorded tracks on your multi track recorder, you must make sure that the analogue/digital (A/D) conversion and the digital/analogue conversion (D/A) is fast enough so that the singer hears the vocal - music mix coming from the computer in (almost) real-time. Nowadays latency is not that big of an issue especially when working with core audio (mac audio driver), but it still might be an issue with Windows. I wish people would actually discuss sound cards a bit more than just referring to the speakers, because once you have a bad input signal you automatically have a bad output signal. So your music will have a lower quality no matter how big or expensive your studio monitors are.

There are three common ways to connect a sound card to a computer. USB sound cards are the most commonly used audio interfaces. This is because they are affordable and can deliver high quality sound. USB 1.x can be easily used for 2 track simultaneous recording. USB 2.x can be used for 8 or more tracks simultaneously. Firewire seems a bit slower than USB 2.x but this doesn’t mean that you can record less tracks simultaneously. Firewire was introduced by Apple and is a true A/V

KNOW HOW Setting Up A Recording Studio interface, meaning it was designed for A/V applications. Thanks to its asynchronical connection it is actually faster than USB 2.x. There are two types of Firewire which are Firewire 400 and Firewire 800. I just got the new iMac 3.06 Ghz and it has Firewire 800 on board already, so I think it is getting more common. PCI sound cards are still the fastest on the market. This is because they are built into a desktop computer and obviously use the PCI slots which are faster than USB1.x, USB 2.x and Firewire. You find these sound cards mainly in large recording studios.

ExpressCards are a good alternative for laptop users who are looking for fast and mobile soundcards. Express slots are the mobile version of PCI, and this interface is as fast and reliable as their PCI brothers. Although some PCI sound cards are cheaper than the external competitors, and deliver the same or even better sound quality, users tend to go for the external devices. This might be because of the laptop boom, but in order to produce professional, high quality sound, you need the best sound card your budget allows, but I promise it will not be as mobile as you might wish.

Professional audio production systems like Pro Tools TDM work only with the PCI Pro Tools sound cards.

Here are some bundles that will help you choose the right setup. Since we covered Pro Tools in our last issue, I will not be presenting the entire Pro Tools based systems.

For most commercial recordings you actually need much less equipment than you think, if you choose your components wisely. Before running now into the next music store, take a piece of paper and think about the following points. 1. What kind of music do you want to produce? 2. Will you record acoustic instruments? 3. How many channels do you need to record simultaneously? 4. Do you want to produce surround or stereo material? 5. Which computer platform do you want to use? 6. Do you need a MIDI interface?
