in my career

You have been chosen the ‘World’s Sexiest Asian Woman’ yet again, in a poll conducted by a Britain-based newspaper. How does it feel? This is the third time I have been selected for the award. Most of us here use the word ‘sexy’ in a derogatory manner. I think sexy is what sexy does. If you something interesting that has an appeal, that is sexy to me. I wonder why people find me so fascinating. I guess they admire my confidence and the fact that I have made it on my own. I think I am doing something right to get this award too. You had once said that you were bullied in the US for being a brownie when you had gone to study there. You also had a complex about the marks on your legs. Do you feel vindicated now that you have been voted as the sexiest woman in an international award? The issue of self esteem which we all have 8 February 2015 | www.visionasia.com.au

from our childhood days stays with us lifelong. Apart from that, I would like to tell all the young teenagers that they need not lose heart if they face problems with their physicality. They can correct all of them through proper diet and medicines. Also, more than the way you look, it is your innermost personality that is very important. It is equally important for all of us to identify our talent if we have to attain confidence. We all have certain qualities and we should all learn to perfect and nourish our talents. You are said to be the third Indian actress who commands a following of more than 15 million fans on Facebook, besides being voted as the ‘Most popular actress of 2014’ in a poll. Do you feel privileged? I find it inspiring. My fans and well wishers are very loyal and have immense faith in me. In the virtual world, I call them PC rock stars. They always support me in whatever I do. They fight for me. I also know many of

them by their names and have a very deep connection with them. There are some of my other fans whom I also meet while travelling. We write letters to each other. You have been recently signed for a talent holding deal with American TV network ABC under the network’s diversity casting program. How did it happen? As an actress I am flattered to be signed on by ABC. It has also helped me understand where I stand internationally. I will be going to LA for two months to discuss projects and meet directors and producers and see what they have to offer. This is known as a talent development deal and it’s a big step for an Indian talent. If I like them I will work on those projects. The writers there are very creative and a lot of Hollywood actors are doing television too so it’s an interesting time for me to explore out there.

COVER STORY

I meet so many assistant directors who have great scripts but don’t get the opportunity in their lives

You have always followed the unconventional path in your career and gone by your own belief and conviction. Do you think it has made all the difference to your career? In my career I have never gone by the conventional path. Take the instance of a film like Mary Kom. Any other actress in my place would have thought twice before opting for the role. I hardly looked like her, let alone her physique and her expertise at the sport of boxing but I took up the challenge. When I signed Barfi I was told that the audiences would never accept me as an autistic girl and it would affect my glamorous image. Even when I signed the negative role in Aitraaz, I was told that I would end up being typecast as a vamp. Likewise, people advised me against doing Fashion and told me that it would only be right to do such a film at the end of my career. When I took up singing too, a lot of eyebrows were raised. Now I am turning producer with Madamji despite the perception of some people who feel that women can’t run production houses. But I am determined to go ahead in this endeavour too. My fans always support me and I get the strength from them. 10 February 2015 | www.visionasia.com.au

What inspired you to turn to production? I wanted to become part of the film-making process. When I came here to Mumbai, I was a total novice in the industry. I had no friends and contacts. I had never attended film parties either so I had no clue on how to bag film projects. The fact that I was a beauty pageant winner definitely made a difference but I had to chart my success story from thereon. After spending so many years in Mumbai, I can now understand why this city is called Mayanagri - people come here with dreams in their eyes. I meet so many assistant directors who have great scripts but don’t get the opportunity in their lives. I want to give these people a break. I don’t have the capability of making a big budget film but I will make small films with new talent. The name of my production house is Purple Pebble Pictures. Pebblebecause I am not a rolling stone, purple has a royalty because it’s a unique colour.

What is Madamji all about? It’s a story of an item girl who is forcefully thrown into the world of politics. Madamji is a story of women empowerment. Are you looking forward to anything particular in 2015? 2015 will be a busy year for me. In April I will start shooting for my production. Currently the film is in the pre-production phase and the casting is still in progress. I am also shooting for Bajirao Mastani, besides Dil Dhadakne Do which is coming up for release. These days, I am enjoying the fact that I am going to office and taking decisions as a producer. When will Priyanka work with the Khans again? I think you should ask this question to them about when they will work with me. As a producer I can’t sign them because they are beyond my reach!

COVER STORY

Do you think the Chopra sisters are here to stay? We are three sisters now working in the industry. Besides myself and Parineeti, my other cousin Mannara made her debut in films last year with Zid. I am extremely protective about my sisters. Parineeti has already proved her acting skills, and now its Mannara’s turn to prove herself. I am pretty sure both of them will go a long way in their careers. They are both hard-working and focussed. It warms my heart when I see my family. When I came in the industry I was all alone. I would often feel sad but for my sisters I am here with them. We are told that you are obsessed with work and hate the idea of going on a holiday. I am very particular about my commitments and there are no compromises as far as work is concerned. In that respect, I am a workaholic to the core. I work round the

clock. Whatever happens in my life I never miss my work. I remember I was shattered when my father passed away but I returned back to the sets just three days after the incident. I believe if you engross yourself in work you tend to forget the bad things in your life. How do you manage to unwind? I do manage to take time off when there are no work pressures. After a hectic 2014, I decided to take a break in the last few days of December and cherished my free time. For me, the best way to unwind is to spend time with my family. Besides, my brother is getting married in February and I and my family are busy trying to organize things for his big day. It is a humungous task but it is fun at the same time. I am also getting promoted to a real sister in law! By Srabanti Chakravarthy

Govinda’s lucky charms to ward off evil eye It is a known fact that Bollywood actors are superstitious about the names of their films and their good luck charms. But veteran actor Govinda is extra cautious about his choice of good luck bracelets and stones. The actor is lately sporting a huge bracelet on his right hand embedded with a prominent Feroza (believed to be a stone for good luck). In addition, the actor also wears a bracelet made of different types of Rudraksha beads on his left hand. When the actor was recently asked about this new obsession he told us the secret of his good-luck charms, “The Kada on the right hand is embedded with different kinds of stones to ward off the evil eye. Whenever a person is affected by the evil eye (buri nazar) the stones fall off.” Showing us the kada the actor further added, “You can see how many stones have fallen off already. I didn’t realize it until I actually began to wear it. When all the stones fall off, I will have to discard it and opt for another,” the actor revealed, adding that the two bracelets had had “stunning effects” on him and his career. “It has also calmed him in many ways and I feel happy in my own space when I wear them,” he added.

Ranbir will not sport six packs in Bombay Velvet From Salman Khan to Shah Rukh and Hrithik Roshan, almost every known hero on the Hindi film scene has worked hard on his physique and achieved a formidable look for his character by sporting six packs in his film. But Ranbir Kapoor seems to be an exception. The actor who is playing a boxing hero and street fighter in his next film, Bombay Velvet will not be sporting six pack abs in the film, “It is a film based in the 60s and I play the role of an ambitious street-fighter, who is charged up and aggressive,” Ranbir recently revealed. According to the film’s director Anurag Kashyap, Ranbir looks every inch a street fighter in the film. “He did train in boxing for six to eight months. The film is based in the 60s and he didn’t need to have six packs. He could have very well glamorized the role by developing six packs but he looks great even without it”, Kashyap added. www.visionasia.com.au | February 2015 15

Famous for Hans Christian Anderson and the Little Mermaid, Copenhagen is more than just fairytales and happy endings. This Danish city is at the forefront of modern design, architecture and gastronomy. Readers looking for a guide to enjoying a holiday in the city will find this article helpful. Copenhagen is the premier capital of Northern Europe. It is also one of Europe’s oldest capitals, with the monarch of Denmark the oldest in the world. It doesn’t matter what your tastes are or what you want to do and see in Copenhagen, there is something for people of all ages, from children to adults. Transport Copenhagen has one of the cleanest public transport systems. The buses and the trains all use the same tickets, so getting around the city is a very easy task. The metros are a popular choice amongst tourists. The tickets can be picked up from the drivers, at vending machines, or at ticket offices. They can be used on the metro, buses, and trains. The buses of Copenhagen run from 5am on Mondays through Saturdays and 6am on Sundays until half past midnight. The taxis can be flagged from anywhere in Copenhagen. If the light on the roof is lit, it means the taxi is available. If you prefer to travel on two wheels, you can rent a bicycle from Kobenhavns Cykler. They do ask for a deposit, but it is well worth the money, as every single resident of Copenhagen seems to be travelling around on a bike. History and Culture Copenhagen’s foundation dates as far

back as 1167, when a bastion was built by Bishop Absalon on Slotsholmen Island, which is where the Danish Parliament now stands. It became the royal capital in 1417. Many of the most impressive buildings in Copenhagen were built during 1588 and 1648, including the Palace of Rosenburg, the Round Tower, and the stock exchange. Widespread damage was caused in the 17th and 19th centuries by military attacks from the Swedes and the British. Things to See and Do Copenhagen’s most popular destination for tourists is the Tivoli Gardens. There are 40 restaurants, live entertainment, and amusement rides, or you can just sit down and enjoy some ice cream. Tivoli Gardens is a very magical place to visit. We advise visiting at night, as it totally transforms with over 100,000 coloured lanterns lighting up the gardens. Rosenborg Castle, a 17th century Renaissance castle built by King Christian the 4th in 1606, is another mustsee. This is not just another ordinary castle, as it is very beautiful both inside and outside. Eating and Drinking Copenhagen is a fairly cheap place to eat out in with a buzzing restaurant scene. There are many restaurants offering all-you-caneat buffets, pizza, Indian, and Turkish food.

20 February 2015 | www.visionasia.com.au

The ever-charismatic Big B is back with another challenging role in Shamitabh. The superstar, who continues to re-invent himself at the age of 72, will be seen in yet another ingenuous role in the film. He talks about the film and his experience of working with the younger generation of actors, besides his constant passion for work and why he has never taken anything for granted.

FACE TO FACE

Like everyone else, I am an ordinary human being who is practicing a certain profession

Shamitabh is an unusual name for a film. What inspired you to take up the film? Well it’s a unique story that has been attempted in Indian cinema for the first time. The film hasn’t been named Shamitabh for the sake of sensationalism; it is the diverse characters in the film that called for this unique title. The film tells the story of two people played by me and Dhanush coming together for a certain cause-the two characters have certain qualities in common but they also have sharp differences. Akshara plays a journalist who tries to bring them together. They meet and become successful and then there are ego clashes. You have a very different look in the film? Balki and I worked on many different looks for the film. The character I play is slightly eccentric. He is also someone prone to drinking. Balki came up with the idea of this particular look. The final look was achieved with the help of Dominique who was the make-up specialist of Paa and my make-up man, Deepak Sawant. What was the experience like working with two youngsters Dhanush and Akshara Hassan, who were completely in awe of you? There was no such thing. We were all working together. On the contrary, Dhanush is a superstar and I am totally in awe of him. He has worked hard in this film and I noticed that he’s really good at his job. When I see these youngsters I am very impressed by them, their professionalism and it makes me feel good. I get to learn a lot from them. Tell us about Akshara Haasan. Did you see any similarities between her and her father, Kamal Haasan? She is Kamal’s daughter and she is beautiful but she has her own identity. It’s her first film and she has a long way to go. On the other hand, she can say a lot without talking.

You have rendered your voice for the Piddly number in the film. Was it planned for the beginning? It is the initiative of the makers who create situations and ask me to sing. The same happened in this film too. You have shared a close rapport with Balki over the years. Are you comfortable with his style of working? Balki and I stated with advertising films and we developed a comfort level over the years. It’s important to strike a rapport with your directors if you want to learn from them. In the case of Balki he understands me and my style of working very well. For instance, he knows that I don’t like to shoot when there are too many people on the set. He takes care of these little things and ensures that I can shoot with complete concentration without being disturbed. I also prefer to shoot in sync sound as I feel the emotions come out better. Sometimes it becomes difficult when we shoot outdoors and we have to dub the scene.

How different is the experience working with the younger lot of directors and actors? These days we do all the preparation at the script level itself. We do the script reading together and participate in the interaction. I enjoy these workshops. Earlier we didn’t have these facilities. I am working on Vinod Chopra’s Wazir and all of us have been trying to re-create the personas of our respective characters, by practicing the gait, the speech and the other distinctive traits. It is an enriching experience. In Shamitabh we have attempted something new. We recorded the entire script before commencing the shooting and then shot the film.

The truth is that I am as insecure in front of the camera as any other actor

www.visionasia.com.au | February 2015 21

FACE TO FACE

Balki understands me and my style of working. He knows that I don’t like to shoot when there are too many people on the set

Apparently Shamitabh also has a strong message for the audiences. The film teaches us to be grateful to the little things that we have. Most of us do not realize the importance of things until we lose them. It is only when we are denied these pleasures that we realize their value. I remember an incident when I almost lost my hand in a bomb accident on the sets a few years ago. My hand was like a lump of flesh, which had to be cut to unlock the fingers. After the incident, I lost my web between the thumb and the forefinger. I couldn’t wear my clothes for a long time and I had to button my shirt with one hand. Even today, I have difficult wearing my pants. I realized the importance of my hand then. The incident taught me that you should value and respect what you have. A lot of people advised me not to speak about this but I feel it will help others to understand how lucky they are and how grateful they should be for what they have got. I feel that it should be told so that other lives can be saved. Do you ever feel anxious about your physical and health limitations? I am not anxious about health issues but I never take anything for granted. I was affected by tuberculosis two years ago despite living in a perfectly clean environment. It made me realize that anything can happen to anyone. I am also suffering from Hepatitis from my accident days since I was administered blood of a Hepatitis patient, which remained undetected for a long time. I got to know about it only ten years ago. I was clinically dead at one point because the doctors could not find any pulse. Apart 22 February 2015 | www.visionasia.com.au

from that, 75 percent of my liver is gone. I am living happily only on the 25 percent which is functioning in top form. I am aware that my liver is in danger but I take all the precautions. I believe that it’s important to have the tests done and take precautions. I give personal examples because I know by that a lot of lives can be saved if I give my example. Considering that you have explored some of the best roles in your career, what are the challenges that you are looking for now? I have looked upon every role and film as a challenge. The truth is that I am as insecure as any other actor. Every time I go in front of the camera I am confused about my lines and my facial expressions. I am not very well-versed about facing the camera either. People think that I know all the tricks of the

trade at the back of my hand but I am no master. Does your superstardom ever come in the way of your roles? Honestly speaking, I am no superstar. Like everyone else, I am an ordinary human being who is practicing a certain profession. People approach me as an actor and request me to act in their films. I read the script and go about my work. I want directors to challenge me with different roles now. By S. Bhagat

Shah Rukh Khan feels a book cannot be made on his life Shah Rukh Khan has had a very challenging journey in Bollywood. Many books have also been written on the superstar’s success story from a non-entity to being one of the biggest superstars in films. However Shah Rukh insists that his life can never be made into a film. The superstar was nostalgic and full of vivid memories at a recent media interaction when he spoke about his life and times, “I feel proud that I have been able to survive and make a success story of my life despite being an outsider. I always found the film industry a very all-encompassing place but at times it can be harsh too. It loves you dearly and can punish you harshly,” he said. He also revealed that a number of people had played an important role in his success. However he felt that his life was not important enough to warrant a film, “I have a multi-dimensional personal life with the many people I interact with but my life story is definitely not important enough to make a film. I would never allow Shah Rukh Khan to cast in it,” the actor said in his characteristic humility.

Is Salman readying for Dabangg 3? Superstar Salman Khan is currently going through the busiest phase in his career. The actor has been shooting back to back for his next two films, Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, which are scheduled for an Eid and Diwali release respectively. He has also signed Dharma Productions Shuddhi for which he will start shooting shortly. In the meantime we hear that Yash Raj Films’ has approached the actor for the banner’s next film, Sultan and director Anees Bazmee is planning the sequel to No Entry titled, No Entry Mein Entry. The latest on Salman’s front is that Arbaaz Khan is now planning the third installment of Dabangg, though this will take time. “We want to make it the best of the lot. We know what the audience wants and that’s why we are taking our own time in making it,” Arbaaz recently revealed. According to Arbaaz, no other actor can take the place of Salman in the Dabangg series, “It is his entirely his persona and he has taken it to another level,” he added. www.visionasia.com.au | February 2015 23

Jacqueline Fernandez is currently on a career high. Post the success of Kick, the Srilankan beauty has become one of the most sought after actresses in the industry. More recently, the actress was in the news due to her visit to Srilanka with Salman where they had gone to promote Salman’s ‘Being Human’ brand. Jacqueline is also looking forward to her next film, Roy, in which she will be seen playing a double role for the first time. In a brief interview, the actress talks about her role in Roy and her “second innings” in Bollywood. You will be seen playing a double role for the first time in your career in Roy. How was the experience? Playing two different roles of a movie director and an art enthusiast, was no doubt a challenging experience because the characters are not related to each other and have nothing in common. Also, Roy was more of an experimental film for me- a double role with a very different script. Fortunately, the homework and rehearsals for Ayesha and Tia’s character came in handy. However it was Tia’s character that I really got involved with during the film. Apart from that, we had extensive discussions with the styling team before we arrived on the final looks of the two characters. How was your working experience with superstar Ranbir Kapoor? It was a splendid experience. I was looking forward to sharing screen space with Ranbir for a long time. I have seen some of Ranbir’s films and I liked his work in them. He is a superb actor and that translates onto the screen. When you actually work with him on screen you understand what a talented actor he is. Do you think Kick made a big difference to your career? If you look at my career, I have given hits like Murder 2, Race 2 and Housefull but Kick

was a very special film for me. The look of the film, the role and above all my teaming with a superstar like Salman Khan worked wonders for my career. I developed a new zest for work after the film’s success. When I started shooting for the double role in Roy, I realized how Kick had made a big difference to my confidence levels. I developed a very good comfort level with the director Vikramjit and kept improvising on my scenes. I owe this new confidence entirely to Kick. I wouldn’t hesitate to say that the film re-launched my career. It marked the beginning of my second innings.

I have never spoken about my political views publicly or any networking forum whether it is in India or Sri Lanka www.visionasia.com.au | February 2015 25

ENCOUNTER

I just wish people would leave Salman alone

Are you happy about the roles that are coming your way now? Post the release of Kick, I have been getting some of the most promising scripts in my career. Earlier I had limited options, now I can take a call on the offers that are coming my way. I can afford to push the envelope a bit and don’t necessarily have to stick to conventional roles. I also have the freedom to take risks in my career. There was a time in my career when people were hesitant to cast me in their films. I was never perceived as a great performer but things changed over a period of time. On my part, I worked hard to overcome my limitations. I also trained on my dancing skills something that cannot be overlooked in Hindi films. After all, Bollywood is all about songs and dance. Your recent visit to Srilanka with Salman Khan to promote the ‘Being Human’ campaign generated a political controversy of sorts with the media and political parties alleging that you were there to campaign for the elections. I and Salman were there to promote eye camps on behalf of Salman’s charity foundation, ‘Being Human’. Salman has been doing eye camps in Sri Lanka and we were looking forward to the visit. For me it was a proud moment as I was there in my own country with none other than superstar Salman Khan. Our intentions were very clear and politics was never on our agenda. We were there to create and spread awareness about camps. Unfortunately it coincided with the elections there. I can understand the sentiments of people but I have never spoken about my political views publicly or any networking forum whether it is in India or Sri Lanka. I wish people had got in touch with us before writing speculative stories on the incident. I am an artist first and people should judge me on the basis of my characters in films. There are also several speculative reports doing the rounds that Salman has finally found an ideal life partner in you and the two of you are going steady. I just wish people would leave Salman 26 February 2015 | www.visionasia.com.au

alone. It is his life and his decision on what matters most to him whether it is his life partner or his personal life. Let him decide who he wants to have his dulhan. (Smiles) What does 2015 hold in store for you? Is there anything particular that you are looking for in the New Year? I have a lot to look forward to this year. I have one release every year in my film calendar but this year I have couple of releases. After Roy, I have Karan Johar Productions’ Brothers co-starring Akshay Kumar and Siddharth Malhotra. While I have a double role in Roy, my role in Brothers is way apart from any of the roles I have played so far. Brothers is the remake of the Hollywood film Warrior and I hope we will be able to live up to audience expectations. Apart from this, I also have a Hollywood film titled, Definition Of Fear. The film is being directed by documentary filmmaker James Simpson, who has earlier worked with big actors like Al Pacino and Penelope Cruz. By Srabanti Chakravarthy

to watch out for in 2015

2014 had its share of hits and misses with some stars standing out for their hits and some others standing out for their outstanding performances. Vision Asia takes a look at stars to watch out for in 2015.

SALMAN KHAN (BAJRANGI BHAIJAAN AND PREM RATAN DHAN PAYO)

For Salman the year 2015 may well go down in history as one of the most rewarding years of his career. The superstar has two big releases lined up this year, Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Prem Ratan Dhan Payo. Scheduled for an Id release, Bajrangi Bhaijaan is being eagerly anticipated for the hot pairing of Salman Khan and Kareena Kapoor, which had worked wonders in Bodyguard. The film also marks the super-hit teaming of Salman Khan and director Kabir Khan, who last delivered Ek Tha Tiger. The superstar’s second release, Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, marks his return to Rajshri Productions after a span of 16 years. Salman will be seen in a double role in the film and there is a lot of curiosity about his fresh pairing with Sonam Kapoor, who is 20 years younger to him. The film will also mark the return of Sooraj Barjatiya to the director’s chair a decade after he last directed Vivaah. Salman will be playing the role of a king who presides over a mythical kingdom, while his other role will be that of a common man.

JOHN ABRAHAM (ROCKY HANDSOME AND WELCOME BACK)

Bollywood hunk John Abraham will return to the screen after a gap of two years with two big releases this year- the action film, Rocky Handsome and the laugh riot, Welcome Back. Rocky Handsome, the official remake of South Korea’s highest grossing film of 2010, The Man From Nowhere, follows the journey of a lone crusader, who goes on a murderous rampage against the drug mafia when the only person he cares for a seven-year-old girl, is taken from him, along with her mother. The action caper will see John attempting some of the most dare-devil stunts ever on screen. The film has been directed by Nishikanth Kamat, who last worked with John in the action film, Force. In his next release, Welcome Back, the actor will be seen in the role of a streetsmart young man sporting funky glasses. The laugh riot will have equally important roles for Anil Kapoor, Nana Patekar, Shruti Haasan and Shiney Ahuja, but it will be John’s character in the film that will be something to watch out for.

RANVEER SINGH (BAJIRAO MASTANI)

Ranveer Singh is counting on Bajirao Mastani to be the landmark film in his career. The actor will be seen in the role of the 18th century Maratha warrior, Bajirao Peshwa, who created history. It is a known fact that Sanjay Leela Bhansali is a demanding director who expects his actors to outperform themselves and rip the screen apart with their performances. Ranveer has gone one step further in this film by working overtime to get into the feel of the character. Besides shaving his head for the role, the actor reportedly trained in horse-riding and mastered the Marathi language. He also checked into a Mumbai hotel and stayed in anonymity for four days to spend time with himself and master the nuances of the character. This will be one performance to watch out for from Ranveer Singh.

SHAH RUKH KHAN (FAN)

He has millions of fans over the world swooning over him and it won’t be surprising if fans go wild about Shah Rukh Khan after they watch his performance in his next release, Fan. The team of Yashraj Films and Shah Rukh Khan will be back after a gap of two years after their last outing Jab Tak Hai Jaan. Shah Rukh will be seen in a double role in the film, one as a reigning superstar and another as his lookalike fan. Directed by Maneesh Sharma of Band Baja Baarat fame, Fan explores a fan’s love for his favourite actor. The names of the leading ladies are not official yet but reports suggest that Ileana D’Cruz and Vaani Kapoor, will be seen playing the two roles in the film.

AKSHAY KUMAR (GABBAR, BROTHERS AND SINGH IS BLING)

After the encouraging response to his recent release Baby, Akshay Kumar is looking forward to a string of releases in the coming months. His next film Gabbar, a remake of A.R Murugadoss’ Tamil film, Ramanna, will see him in an action-packed role, sporting a gruff salt-and-pepper beard and moustache with a wavy hair-do. The action king is however more excited than ever about his forthcoming film, Brothers. Directed by Karan Malhotra of Agneepath fame, the film is an official remake of the 2011 Hollywood movie, Warrior and marks the teaming of Akshay Kumar and Karan Johar. The action star is said to have worked hard on his physique and lost 10 kgs in order to get the lean look for the character in the film. He will also be doing complex martial arts sequences for which he underwent extensive training. Akshay will finally wrap up the year with Prabhu Deva’s comedy, Singh is Bling, the sequel to Singh is King, co-starring Kriti Sanon.

KATRINA KAIF (FITOOR, PHANTOM AND JAGGA JASOOS)

Katrina has three releases this year, starting with Abhishek Kapoor’s Fitoor opposite Aditya Roy Kapoor followed by Phantom in which she plays a secret spy agent and Jagga Jasoos in which she will seen with Ranbir Kapoor. While Fitoor is a tragic love story that will see the actress playing an intensely passionate role, Phantom will see her getting into action mode and attempting complex stunts with Saif in the film. Katrina will be sporting a rugged look in the film, complete with military pants and sports shoes. On the other hand, Jagga Jasoos, will see the actress at her quirkiest best, with director Anurag Basu helming the project. The actress will don a geeky avatar for the role.

DEEPIKA PADUKONE (BAJIRAO MASTANI, TAMASHA AND PIKU)

This year is crucial for Deepika as she has three big films lined up for release in three different genres. Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s magnum opus Bajirao Mastani will see her playing the role of the passionate Muslim princess, Mastani. After Ram Leela, this is the second time she has been paired with real-life lover, Ranveer Singh. Their on-screen chemistry will be something to watch out for. The actress will be seen next in Tamasha directed by Imtiaz Ali, in which she has been paired with ex-flame Ranbir Kapoor. The romantic film has been shot extensively in France with music by A.R. Rahman. It is said to be one of the biggest productions till date for its producer Sajid Nadiadwala. The actress also has Shoojit Sarkar’s Piku opposite Amitabh Bachchan, in which she will be seen playing Bachchan’s daughter for the second time on screen.

RANBIR KAPOOR (JAGGA JASOOS, ROY AND BOMBAY VELVET)

This year is likely to be a decisive one for Ranbir’s career as the actor has three important releases lined up. While the actor will be seen in a new avatar of a thief in Roy, his next film, Bombay Velvet, will mark his return in a lead role after he was last seen in Besharam (2013) and is said to be one of the biggest releases of 2015. Ranbir’s Jagga Jasoos, which is also his first home-production, will see him coming together with beau, Katrina Kaif, after they last worked together in Rajneeti. Ranbir will be seen playing the role of a detective who is in search of his lost father (played by Govinda) with the help of his trusted aide, Katrina. The film will see Ranbir’s journey from the age of 19 to 40 in the movie. Ranbir will also be seen enacting scenes through multiple songs as part of a special sequence in the film.

VARUN DHAWAN (BADLAPUR)

He is just three films old but Varun Dhawan is all set to give the seasoned actors a run for their money with his performance in his forthcoming film, Badlapur. Directed by Sriram Raghavan, Badlapur is a revenge drama that tells the story of a family man who sets out to take revenge after being wronged. Reportedly Varun underwent a total metamorphosis in the thriller, which has him playing a character that transforms from an 18-year old innocent boy to a 40-year old man, thirsting for revenge. The actor who worked hard on the role ended up visiting dreary places from a morgue to a prison housing serial killers and almost went into depression at one point during the shooting with his pre-occupation with the role. The film will showcase Varun’s immense acting caliber. The promos of the film have already got him a huge round of applause.

SAIF ALI KHAN (PHANTOM)

After the lackluster response to his recent releases, Humshakals and Happy Ending, Saif Ali Khan is eagerly looking forward to Phantom, which is based on the post 26/11 attacks in Mumbai and global terrorism. Saif has essayed the role of a secret agent in the action thriller, which has been extensively shot in Beirut, Lebanon and Turkey among other places. He will also be seen voicing his dialogues in Kurdish, which he specially learnt for the role. The actor reportedly hit the gym after eight years to deliver the hi-octane action scenes in the film. He was also seen travelling with his physical trainer in tow when the crew shot abroad. The spy action film has been produced by Sajid Nadiadwalla and directed by Kabir Khan.

Prachi Desai is excited to play Azharuddin’s ex-wife in biopic If recent reports are to be believed, Prachi Desai is all excited to play the character of Naureen, Azharduddin’s wife in the biopic being made on the famed cricketer. This will be the second time that the actress will play a Muslim character in a film. Speaking about the role Prachi Desai recently revealed, “I am looking forward to play Naureen’s role. I am still reading the script though. I am also looking forward to work with Emraan but I don’t know any other details of the film yet.” On being cast as a Muslim character after Once Upon A Time in Mumbai, the actress commented, “I guess my persona and face reflect that kind of look which is why Ekta Kapoor has cast me again. For us actors it’s all about convincing the audiences with our roles.” Prachi has always been considered to be among Ekta Kapoor’s favourite actors. “I am happy that I am her favourite because working with Ekta Kapoor is fun and she has proved herself as the best producer with so many hit films to her credit.”

Sanjay Dutt pens down scripts in prison His frequent furloughs and trips to Mumbai to meet his family from the Yeravada jail have kicked up a political debate of sorts but Sanjay Dutt is oblivious to the noise being made about it. The actor, who had become extremely emotional and touchy before he was sent to jail, has now picked up the broken pieces of his life and emerged a much stronger man than ever before. According to Sanjay’s mentor, Mahesh Bhatt, who has worked with him in notable films like Sadak, Naam and Dushman, Sanjay has resurrected himself and been writing some very thoughtful scripts during his stay in prison. The director was to meet Sanjay Dutt during one of his furloughs to discuss an emotional script that the actor had penned. Apparently Sanjay was keen to get Bhatt’s feedback on the story that he had written. The actor who was recently seen with Aamir Khan in PK is said to be penning a series of scripts from the four walls of the prison, allowing his ideas to flow uninterruptedly. The people who know him feel that Sanjay is now a completely changed man, with a new zest for life. www.visionasia.com.au | February 2015 31

This wasn’t just a serial for me. It was a learning experience. I hope the audiences continue to love and respect me even when they stop thinking of me as Mahadev

With Devon Ke Dev Mahadev finally coming to an end, how does it feel? There is a feeling of emptiness. I had been playing Lord Shiva for three years. In fact it’s not even right to say I had been ‘playing’ the character. My involvement with the character was much deeper than that. The audience had actually begun to believe that I was Mahadev reincarnated. But my commitment to the serial’s dogma doesn’t diminish. Whatever I am, whatever I do I’ll be connected to the show. I am happy that we completed 820 episodes. Does it give you a feeling of liberation now that you have no constraints about living up to the image of a super-god? I do feel relaxed and happy. Being the face of the show was a huge responsibility and I made sure that I fulfilled it to the best of my abilities. It feels great when people come and tell me that I profoundly touched their lives and changed their perspective on life. The show has changed lives. I am happy about that. What was the atmosphere like on the sets during the closing weeks? Everyone was mentally prepared for the end. I am not the only one who was deeply involved with the show. Every technician on the show was proud to be associated with it. You almost became the brand ambassador for Lord Shiva. How much did the show change your perception of life? I do feel privileged that I got an opportunity to take Lord Mahadev’s message across the world. The experience has made me a better human being. I have now developed an understanding about the cycle of nature. I have also realized that everything in life is inter-connected and every person is equal. This wasn’t just a serial for me. It was a learning experience. I hope the audiences continue to love and respect me even when they stop thinking of me as Mahadev.

Are you the kind who would suddenly go wild and start dancing on bar counters? I don’t see the possibility of that happening. I’ve never done it. Why would I do it now? I continue to see my role in social life as a huge responsibility. Irrespective of whatever I do, I’ll ensure that I maintain the dignity of my part as Mahadev. What next? Is there any other mythological role underway? I don’t know what lies in store in the future. Right now, I am taking a family vacation in my home-town in Kashmir. I hadn’t been there for five years. Once I return to work, I am planning to completely reinvent myself. However, I wish to make it clear that I am not looking at any mythological show for a long time now. I would also like to state that there is much more to me than Mahadev. The viewers have seen only 40 percent of my

capabilities. I’d like to surprise audiences in my next role while making sure that I don’t compromise with the dignity of the character I played for three years. Are there any movies in the offing? I am a meeting a lot of filmmakers who are keen to sign me on the dotted line. It’s every actor’s dream to venture into cinema. Again I would like to choose something that befits the dignity of Mahadev’s character. I guess the real struggle has just begun.

wedding bells ring Will the

for these Valentine couples in Bollywood?

Love is in the air what with Valentine’s Day soon approaching. It is that time of the year when lovey-dovey couples pop the question and make elaborate wedding plans. We take a look at Bollywood couples who are ready to head to the altar this year and say ‘I do’.

Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh They had a whirlwind romance from the word go but Deepika and Ranveer Singh never chose to go public about their affection for each other. The sparks flew between the two on the sets of Ram Leela. While their on-screen chemistry was the talk of the town, their off-screen attraction was evident at all the media events. The two seemed to be madly in love and their public display of affection more than said it. Later they started spending more and more time together to an extent where they also accompanied each other on their respective outdoor shoots. While Deepika went all the way to Istanbul to meet

Ranveer when he was shooting for Dil Dhadakne Do, Ranveer took off to Dubai when she was shooting for Happy New Year. He also agreed to take up the cameo role of her dead husband in director Homi Adjania’s Finding Fanny, so that he could spend more time with her. Currently, the couple is busy shooting for Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Bajirao Mastani. Buzz is that their parents have already exchanged pleasantries and the wedding day is not far away. However Deepika is treading cautiously as she had not had a good experience with her earlier relationship. If things go well, they could well tie the knot in 2015.

Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif It has been more than five years since Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif have been seeing each other. The two first met at a birthday party six years ago after which they were cast in Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani. It was the time when Ranbir and Deepika had decided to end their relationship, while Katrina was going through a troubled phase with Salman. Both Ranbir and Katrina found solace in each other even as they struck a new rapport with their next film, Rajneeti. After that there was no looking back though Ranbir’s roving eye was a matter of anxiety for Katrina. Amidst denials and counter-denials, the couple was later caught holidaying in Spain after which Katrina’s bikini-clad images went viral on the internet. A miffed Katrina later accused the media of invading her personal space. In December last year, the two were said to have moved in to their new love-nest in suburban Mumbai. They even had a house-warming party at the end of 2014 and invited their close friends from the industry at the do. Going by recent reports, the couple even got engaged at a ceremony held at Katrina’s London home, where they also spent the New Year together. Meanwhile Ranbir’s cousin, Kareena Kapoor admitted last that she was looking forward to Ranbir’s sangeet ceremony so that she could dance to her favourite Bollywood numbers. Buzz is that the couple is planning a late 2015 wedding.

Soha Ali Khan and Kunal Khemmu It has been a long courtship for Soha and Kunal, who recently tied the knot. The two have been open about their relationship right from the beginning. It all began for the two young actors when they met on the sets of Dhoondte Reh Jaoge in 2009. It wasn’t love at first sight though. The two were way apart from each other and had little in common. But opposites do attract and the two were drawn to each other over a period of time. The two announced their engagement last year in July, after which Soha revealed the story of how Kunal proposed to her by going down on his knees in the world’s most romantic place, Paris. Their relationship also got the approval of Soha’s family with her mother, Sharmila Tagore and brother, Saif Ali Khan taking an instant liking for the affable Kunal. Sharmila Tagore later bought a Rs 9 crore apartment in the plush area of Mumbai and Soha and beau Kunal moved in soon after. The two have been in a living relationship ever since. It was later said that the apartment was a wedding gift for the couple from Soha’s mom Sharmila Tagore.

Anushka Sharma and Virat Kohli Actress Anushka Sharma and cricketer Virat Kohli are the new ‘it’ couple in town. While the two have been denying their relationship for a long time now, they have been spotted together at various dos and public places on several occasions. The actress has been seen accompanying Virat at all the major cricket matches, despite her busy shooting schedule. Later when Anushka was on a cruise in Spain for Dil Dhadakne Do, Virat joined her to spend time with his lady-love. On another occasion, Virat flew down all the way to Sri Lanka when Anushka was shooting for Bombay Velvet. The two were also spotted holidaying in New Zealand last year when Virat had gone for a match. Now that their relationship is out in the open, the two have thrown caution to the winds and have no qualms displaying their affection for each other. Virat recently went on record to admit that he was in a relationship with the actress, while Anushka was quoted saying that she had nothing to hide now that their relationship was public knowledge. There has also been a buzz that their parents have met and a formal engagement has taken place. We are hoping that they will soon announce their wedding plans in 2015.

I have

nothing against any religion, says Aamir Khan

It is important not to make wrong interpretations especially when it comes to religion. The problem intensifies when people start religious extremism and try to create differences

38 February 2015 | www.visionasia.com.au

While PK has taken the box-office by storm, the film has come under attack from several sections of society who feel that the film has offended the religious sentiments of Hindus and portrayed Hindu deities in a bad light. The film’s hero Aamir Khan voices his opinion on the controversy.

NEWS EXPRESS

Even as religious gurus continue to protest against some of the scenes in PK, which they feel make a mockery of religion, the hero of the film Aamir Khan maintains that he is unaffected by all the hue and cry made about the film. The actor feels that the people who are voicing their disapproval against the film are those with vested interests who are afraid of being exposed, “I guess they all have a “wrong number” as portrayed in the film. They are suddenly finding themselves in the dock. I have nothing against any religion and I personally believe that each of us should follow the faith or religion that we believe in. We should all have faith in God but it is important not to get carried away by manmade rules on religion.” There are also allegations against Aamir and the film’s director, Raj Kumar Hirani that the film specifically ridicules Hindu religion. However Aamir points out at one particular scene in the film and argues that the film takes a balanced view on religion, “If that was the case then we would have never shown the blast at the railway station and condemned people doing so in the name of Islam.”

The actor, who is known to keep a tab on the collections of all his films, also insists that a majority of audiences have seen the film in a very positive light, “I have got so many positive responses and feedback from people. If people have not liked PK then how come the film has done so much of business at the box-office? We have made the film to convey the message of humanity and I am happy that the film is continuing to make waves at the box-office even after a month,” he avers. The actor who personally follows both Hindu and Muslim religion maintains that every religion has something good to offer, “When I was married to Reena (his first wife), her mother used to perform havan (a certain kind of puja) regularly and I would make it a point to attend it. Likewise, I have also completed the Haj pilgrimage to pay my obeisance to God.” Aamir feels that problems occur when certain people try to give religion their own interpretation, “It is important not to make wrong interpretations especially when it comes to religion. The problem intensifies when people start religious extremism and

try to create differences. Sometimes people just go with the flow. That should not happen either.” As of now there are two sections on social networking forums one of which has called for a boycott on PK, while the other continues to support the film. However Aamir reveals that he is in no mood to react to either of the two groups, “I don’t react to negative people and their actions. It is a well-known fact that people have always protested against the truth. I would have reacted if someone had not liked my genuine effort in making the film.” This is not the first time that Aamir has landed in the midst of a controversy. Prior to this the actor had come under attack when he had taken up social issues and exposed the malpractices and wrongdoings of social groups in his show, Satyameva Jayate, “I guess people who disseminate wrong information and promote wrong practices have a problem with me. On my part, I am proud of taking the initiative in making a show like Satyameva Jayate,” quips the actor. (Inputs from Srabanti Chakravarty) www.visionasia.com.au | February 2015 39

STRAIGHT TALK

I am happy to be given the title of

Horror Queen

The dusky Bipasha Basu is making waves these days as a horror queen in Bollywood. The actress who has had a long innings in films, talks about her latest release, Horror, her equation with her co-star Karan Singh Grover and how she is not dissuaded with rumours about her personal life.

I chose Alone because I found it to be a realistic love story more than a horror film. I never looked at it as a horror film from day one. I found it to be a passionate and realistic love story. Every relationship has its ups and downs-the going is not always smooth. I am sure all those who are married and have been in a relationship could connect to the characters of Sanjana and Kabir in the film. Prior to Alone, I was offered a couple of romantic comedies but I did not opt for them simply because I don’t find rom-coms real.

I found the idea of playing a ghost quite weird and scary It was the first time I was playing a ghost. I did not have a benchmark or reference point on what a ghost looked like. I was skeptical and I would ask the director after every shot whether I was going on the right track. The scariest part was about donning the make-up for the ghost. I even told my director that he would probably have to opt for a different heroine as I was not comfortable putting on the make-up. I was also apprehensive about being scarred for life. Fortunately for me, the director was very understanding. He used extensive special effects for some of the scenes in the film. It was a formidable challenge shooting the film I was required to play the roles of conjoined twins Sanjana and Anjana, both of whom are very different from each other. One is alive and one is dead and they both are in love with Kabir. Shooting this was tough as I had to be joined with my body-double first as Sanjana and later as Anjana with a change in my hair and make-up. A lot of time had to be spent on the

should make money for its producers and distributors. Every second film I am offered these days is a super-natural film. Maybe film-makers are approaching me for such subjects because they know that horror sells especially when it is combined with passion. I have been getting these roles for a long time now. However, out of 50 such subjects that are offered to me, I only choose one or two films.

I had no qualms working with a television actor as a co-star I have no such notions. I have worked with several newcomers in the past. Also Karan is not a rank newcomer. He has been in the industry for the last ten years and has a great potential and talent. He is a popular actor and has a strong fan-following. He looks great, he can dance and his emotional scenes are his strength. He is an easy fit for the kind of Hindi films that we make. We had no problems doing the intimate love scenes because we broke the ice on day one. That’s because Karan is a brat and a chatter box. The question of discomfort did not arise as we were friends from day one. Later we went to Kerala to shoot the ‘Katra’ song and the intimate scene. We were talking all the while even as we shot those scenes. I think it is very important to have a certain rapport with your co-star if you are required to shoot kissing scenes. When I shot for Bachna Ae Haseeno with Ranbir Kapoor, I was initially reluctant to do the kissing scene with Ranbir. I requested Adi (Chopra) not to include it, but he was determined to go ahead. However, I did not find it embarrassing simply because I and Ranbir developed a good rapport soon after. Alone did not capitalize merely on the sex quotient to draw the box-office audiences: The sex and the passion in the film were present to justify the depth of the relationship. There were at least three scenes picturised on me and Karan, which portrayed the turbulence in the relationship. In fact, the relationship in the film was so intense that we found it difficult to dub the film. It was tough to recreate the emotion while dubbing.

I happen to be in a demanding profession but work comes second for me

I regret doing some films, Humshakals being one of them. I wouldn’t be wrong if I say that Humshakals proved to be a horror film for me. I had a problem with the director Sajid Khan, though I have nothing against the producer Vashu Bhagnani. After the film, I made a resolution never to work with Sajid Khan again. I am an intelligent girl and I don’t make the same mistakes twice.

Irrespective of the response to Alone, the film helped me find two great friends in Karan and Bhushan, the film’s director. We were like a trio right from the beginning. It’s very rare that you connect with the right set of people when you do a film. What I liked about Bhusan and Karan is that they don’t do anything to impress people. I like people who are no-nonsense and honest like me. I and Karan also socialise a lot and spend a lot of time together. There have also been various stories doing the rounds of my link-ups in the recent past but I don’t get upset about all these things. These rumours just go back to the place from whether they come.

I am not particularly anxious about my career though I haven’t given hits in the recent past. Some of my last few films have not worked at the box-office for various reasons. While Humshakals was disastrous from the start, I had great expectations from Aatma but the film failed to make an impact because the audiences did not like me in the role of a mother. The distributors of the film also felt that I and Nawazuddin did not make a very good on-screen pairing. On my part, I played the role of a mother with a lot of credibility. I don’t put myself to any limitations. I have done over 60 films so far and I have lately adopted the practice of doing one film at a time. I happen to be in a demanding profession but work comes second for me. I think it’s important to be able to find time for your other pursuits apart from acting. As told to Srabanti Chakravarthy

I am happy to be given the title of Horror Queen if that helps the film to make money at the box-office. I am more concerned that my films www.visionasia.com.au | February 2015 45

His numbers indicate that he will live life on his own terms and will go to any lengths to acquire what he wants from life. Money will not be a limitation and he will have no monetary problems ever in life. However, he should learn to keep his secrets to himself as he is likely to be easily targeted by negative forces around him which may hamper his personal and professional progress. What the year ahead has in store for him Shahid will now enter his 35th year which indicates a lull period especially on the personal front as he will have to wait longer to find an ideal partner. As far as his films are concerned, his next release Shaandar will do decent business at the box-office. The film will also win him rave reviews for his performance. Sonam Kapoor had better watch out her words Her tendency to call a spade a spade and her forthrightness has often landed Sonam Kapoor in unwanted controversies. The actress is not known to be very popular among her other co-stars for this very reason though she has lately become a favourite with the KhansSalman and Arbaaz. Sonam is once again in the eye of a storm for her recent media statement that she would never publicize her plans to do social service. The statement has nothing controversial to it but the ironical timing of the statement has led to the belief that she deliberately made the comment in order to take a dig at Deepika Padukone. Deepika had only recently announced her plans to support the cause of mental health awareness. Also, Sonam had in her past media interactions made a mockery of Deepika’s fashion sense on a chat show by calling the latter “a clotheshorse” on her sense of dressing. However the Dolly Ki Doli actress is now trying to clear the air about the whole controversy. “I never mentioned Deepika’s name when I made the statement. I am not even aware about the causes that she is supporting. Also, I have a lot of respect for Deepika,” Sonam recently revealed.

Vidya is fascinated with Kolkata and its Durga puja culture Vidya Balan recently completed the climax of Hamari Adhuri Kahani, which she describes as her second intensely passionate love story after Parineeta. The actress, who’s always shared a fondness for Kolkatta and the Bengali fervor, was delighted to find that the director Mohit Suri had perfectly recreated Kolkata in a Mumbai suburban bungalow. "I have always had this great sense of belonging to Kolkata and its rich Bengali culture. The climax of the film is also portrayed in Kolkata, when the Durga puja fervor is at its high. Also Durga Puja is my favourite time. Director Mohit Suri had earlier shot a few Durga puja scenes in Kolkata but there were other scenes which remained to be shot in an old dilapidated house,” Vidya revealed. The sequence in the film is about the installation of Durga statues at the beginning of the festival when flower shops are bustling with activity and there is a chill in the air, “I quite liked the whole atmosphere. It looked like a perfect setting for the puja,” the actress enthused. 64 February 2015 | www.visionasia.com.au
