I had never played a villain before and it somehow didn’t seem the right thing to do
His two back-to-back releases in the recent past have brought Govinda back in the reckoning. The films in question have been unable to make a mark at the box-office but Govinda has not gone unnoticed. The dancing star once known for his laugh-a-minute comedy is no doubt excited. He shares his joy in a tete-a-tete with Subhash K Jha.

STRAIGHT TALK
My mother had predicted that I would gain back my youthful looks all over again when I turned 49
When I decided to take the plunge into politics, I did it because my family approved of it
Shaad Ali’s Kill Dil and Raj NidimoruKrishna DK’s Happy Ending didn’t do well at the box-office but you rocked in both the films. Does that make you happy?
What was your mother’s prophecy? My mother had predicted that I would gain back my youthful looks all over again when I would turn 49. She had cautioned me that I would be caught up in my professional and family responsibilities prior to that and would therefore grow prematurely old. I guess her words were right.
My mother always taught me to wait for good things to happen. The good things may take time and one has to be patient. Now I know what my mother meant. But you had to go through unbearably long period of exile?
an
Your character of a tantrum-throwing star in Happy Ending, is said to be inspired from one of our Bollywood stars? How far is it true?
That was my destiny...it can’t be helped. In Kill Dil you played a villain who kept breaking into a dance at the drop of a hat. Was the character so designed taking into consideration your penchant for dancing? I didn’t give it that much thought. For 13 days I went on contemplating whether I should indeed take up the role. I had never played a villain before and it somehow didn’t seem the right thing to do. I also asked my wife and my children about it. They very honestly told me that I didn’t have much of a choice. The kind of roles I wanted to do were not coming my way and I wasn’t keen on the kind of offers I was getting. My family told me to take up the offer otherwise I would be left behind. What made you finally say yes to the role? I remembered an incident that my father narrated to me during my days of struggle. He told me how he had missed out on a great opportunity in his life by refusing the main villain’s role in Mehboob Khan’s Aan. He also told me that he had lost out on some great roles that would have come to him in the next 30 years of his life by rejecting the role. That’s how I began to give the role a serious thought. Do you think you would have lost out on a great opportunity by refusing the role? To be honest, one never knows what destiny has in store. When we have enough work, we tend to forget our problems. However when your career is not on a high, it is best to take up any opportunity that comes your way and give it your best shot. This world
is governed by the Almighty and we have very little control over what happens. How much of a role has your family played in your decision-making process? I’ve always worked for my family. When I was doing 2-3 shifts a day, it was for my family. When I decided to take the plunge into politics, I did it because my family approved of it. However, I realized later that politics was not for me. It took people a while to realize that I was serious about quitting politics. Did the political phase in your life affect your career in films? It was a nightmare. My films were never in a position to take off because no financers were willing to finance them. If they somehow got completed no distributors would come forward to buy them. It was like a punishment for crimes that had nothing do with me. I am glad that I’ve been accepted once again. You looked extremely trim and fit in Happy Ending. How did you achieve it? It’s all due to my regular sessions of pranayaam (yogic breathing). I was supposed to play a heart-throb in the film so the co-directors asked me to strictly control my diet for the next three months. When I saw the results, it reminded me of my mother’s prophecy.
A star is a star. When the world accepts you as a success then nothing else matters. I’ve a policy for playing all my characters. I make sure they don’t resemble anyone I know. I study personalities, not persons. I’ve seen many personalities like the one I play in Happy Ending. The same goes for Kill Dil. The guy I play may look familiar. But he isn’t anyone that you actually know. I played a killer but you didn’t see me shoot a single bullet in Kill Dil. It’s all about how an actor brings in elements of innovation. In both Kill Dil and Happy Ending you got the maximum applause when you walked onto the screen? I’ve always received a lot of love from the audience. I bow to the audience. It’s because of their blessings and the blessings of my parents that I’ve survived for so long. What next? I am focusing on doing quality work. I want my next release, Abhinay Chakra, which is my own production to get the same overwhelming attention of the audiences. Beyond that I want to be careful about my career. We are all bound by time and destiny. Right now I just wish to express my gratitude to the forces that now working in my favour.

COVER STORY
With three back to back releases from Action Jackson to Lingaa and your forthcoming film, Tevar, did you have a tough time coping up with the demanding pre-release promotions of the three films? I have been working round the clock for the past several months. It has been a hectic schedule with very little time for anything else but then my work is my greatest passion. I love being busy all the time. In fact, I had a fun time doing the promotions of the three films, since I was not shooting.
My work is my greatest
Her recent release, Action Jackson, has not lived up to expectations but the fact cannot be denied that Sonakshi Sinha is currently riding high on the success wave with some of the best films coming her way. After making her debut in the south with the legendary superstar Rajnikanth, the vivacious actress is now looking forward to her next release, Tevar, in which she has been paired with Arjun Kapoor. The actress recalls her experience of working with Rajnikanth, the equation she shares with her heroes, her penchant for comedy and her progression to becoming one of the best dancers in the industry.
Tell us about your recent release, Lingaa. How was the experience working with Rajnikanth for the first time? I was excited at the prospect of working with a legendary star like Rajnikanth. I was a fan of his ever since I watched his film, Hum, for the first time. He is a very down-to-earth person and I have never seen anybody as humble as him. Despite being such a big star, he makes it a point to acknowledge his fans even when he is zipping down the roads. He reciprocates the love of his admirers which is why he is such a great star. He’s also a wonderful human being. When I about to face the camera for the first time for Lingaa, I went up to Rajnikanth and told him that I was nervous. He calmed me down and told me that I had no reason to feel so since I was his friend’s daughter. How was the experience of playing the role of a village belle in Lingaa? I found the role challenging since my character is set in the pre-independence era of the 1940s. The best part was that the romance depicted in the film was through the eyes of the hero and the heroine. Coming to your forthcoming film, Tevar, you have been paired with Arjun Kapoor for the first time on screen. How was the experience working with him? Arjun is a professional actor to the core. He always comes well-prepared for his scenes and is perfectly aware of where his role is heading. He is also well-informed about the technicalities of film-making. Like him, I too would like to be well-versed in the process of filmmaking.

I don’t compare my heroes. I have a different equation with each of my co-stars
You have also made your singing debut in films with Tevar by rendering your voice for a song in the film. Are you a trained singer? I was looking at the possibility of trying out singing for a long time but no one gave me the opportunity to do so. I am a bathroom singer and I was not even aware that I could sing professionally. It was director Amit Sharma’s idea that I sing the song. Imran Khan, the internationally acclaimed Punjabi singer, is also making his Bollywood singing debut with the song. I have just rendered a small part of the song. You have danced to a raunchy number ‘Radha’ in Tevar, which is said to be one of the highlights of the film. I wouldn’t call it raunchy, it’s a peppy number with a fusion of Indian and western choreography. Remo-sir who has choreographed the dance number has given it a new style. I had so much fun shooting for this song. Music directors Sajid and Wajid gave me my first song in Dabangg and now they have given me this song. It was a great experience. You seem to have lately mastered the art of dancing with your dance moves now being compared to Madhuri Dixit? I am a great fan of Madhuri Dixit and Sridevi. They are both phenomenal dancers in their own right. I am yet to go a long way before I can be compared to them but yes I would definitely love to dance like them. What is the secret of your fitness? I believe that the best way to fitness is to lead a balanced life style. I am against the idea of crash diets and starvation. It is best to eat everything in limits and work out every day. I have also become an ardent follower of yoga over the years, though my

fashion designer, are you making an effort to come out of the conventional Indian beauty tag? I style myself according to my personality. I enjoy putting in my own creative ideas in the way I style myself and try to give a personal touch to my costumes. I am aware of the fact that my fans would like to see me in different get-ups. So far, I have been extensively seen in traditional and Indian outfits in a majority of my films. I did try to change my look in Holiday. I also tried to get into the western gear in Joker but no one noticed that. Now I am trying to re-orient myself to ensure that I have a different look in each of my films.
exercise regimen keeps changing from time to time. It’s said that you have usurped all the leading Bollywood ladies as far as brand endorsements are concerned? I am happy that people consider me worthy for endorsing their brands. I am not trying to overtake any actresses, nor am I here to usurp anyone. I am merely a few films old and I am merely following the other actresses. It›s encouraging that I am being approached by various brands to endorse their products. Reportedly you have also started handling the styling of some of your films, one of them being your recent release, Action Jackson. Knowing that you are a trained
Action Jackson also saw you sharing screen space with two other heroines. Are you comfortable with the idea of working in multi-starrers? This was my first multi-starrer and I had no problems doing it. I have never been insecure about my career and I signed the film knowing that there were other girls in the film. It is true that I have done a majority of solo heroine projects and have always been pampered on the sets. All the same, I have no qualms sharing screen space with other actresses. It is fun working in a multi starrer film. Coming to your equation with your heroes, you seem to share a great rapport with the older heroes like Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar and Ajay Devgn, in comparison to the new generation heroes. I don’t compare my heroes. I have a different equation with each of my co-stars. The comfort level I share with them is also different. With elder actors you get to learn a lot. On the other hand, when it comes to younger actors you can learn along with them. Also, I share a great rapport with

I am a great fan of Madhuri Dixit and Sridevi. They are both phenomenal dancers in their own right some of the new generation heroes, one of them being Arjun Kapoor who is my co-star in Tevar. Buzz is that you and Arjun Kapoor are already a couple and share a great rapport with each other. I have clarified on this subject earlier and I would not like to comment anything more on it. Besides, I have stopped reacting to such rumours. Which other heroes are you looking forward to work with? I am looking forward to the opportunity of working with Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan. They are great actors, besides being superstars in their own right. I am also eager to work with Hrithik Roshan and dance with him as he is a great dancer. What kind of films would you like to do in the future? I am more comfortable doing romantic
comedies and light-hearted films. Most of the films I have done so far are commercial films from the entertainment genre like Dabangg, Rowdy Rathore and Action Jackson. I want my films to reach out to a wider audience. I would like to do a romcom and another serious film like Lootera. Next year I will be doing a film where I will be doing all the action instead of the hero. You seem to have a penchant for comedy too which was evident from your comic timing in your last release, Action Jackson. I guess I have inherited my father’s comic timing, which is why I find comedy relatively easy. In fact I love telling jokes, listening to them and making others laugh. While I can get into the comic act quite spontaneously, I find it difficult crying in front of the camera. I am also a little shy so I am not very comfortable crying in front of a crowd. I try to induce tears by using glycerin.
What do you think of awards, do you look forward to one after every film? My biggest awards are the appreciation that I get from my fans through the tweets and the fan mail. There is no greater reward than this. By S. Bhagat

SHOW There are cinematic icons. And then there is Rekha. After playing the role of the 60-plus grandmother who transforms into a supermodel in Super Nani, the evergreen actress is preparing for a full-fledged television show. She talks about this and her forthcoming film, Fitoor, in a conversation with Subhash K Jha.
After stunning the audiences with her very lovable performance in Super Nani, the ageless Rekha is back in the news. The charismatic actress is gearing up for her fullfledged television debut with a show that is out of the ordinary, “Yes, I am seriously looking at the idea of doing my own television show. is that my TV show would be a reflection of my own personality. The only problem is the language. I am not as fluent in Hindi as I’d like to be. I think in English,” the veteran actress recently revealed. When asked whether her TV show would live up to the benchmark created by Big B’s Kaun Banega Crorepati, Rekha protested, “That’s a tall order. Even if I can draw up
a creative stool and reach to that height I’d consider myself lucky.” The veteran actress recently stunned audiences with her performance of a 60year old grandmother in Super Nani. On second thoughts, it was Rekha who was the saving grace of the film. “That isn’t true,” says Rekha as she goes back into memory lane and chats on life, music, cinema and

beauty, “Dimple, Sridevi or Madhuri could have very well played the part. I took on the part because I loved the idea of a housewife who sublimates her own identity for her family, only to be taken for granted by her husband and children. It’s a situation prevalent in households across the country in smaller cities and villages. That’s the audience I wanted to reach out in this film.” The iconic actress feels that she managed to reach out to women at the grassroots with Super Nani, despite the grim response to the film. “The film definitely managed to make a mark on the minds of this target audience and I am glad it did. The last time we reached out to that audience was when I did Phool Bane Angaaray. Earlier even Basu Bhattacharya’s Astha had reached out to a very wide spectrum of women.” Astha became mired in controversy because of its volatile theme of a housewife moonlighting as a sex worker to buy herself the good things in life. Rekha shrugs off the sensationalism saying, “Never mind why it succeeded. It at least paid off Basuda’s bills when he was in hospital.” While the actress is known to have an empathetic heart for people around her, she has fond memories of her siblings and is happy that all of them are well-settled. “They are all doing very well in life, touchwood. My sister Radha lives in the US and has discovered her craft in painting. She is by far the most beautiful among us sisters. If only Radha had been as tall as me she’d have been the actor in the family,” the actress avers. Another quality of Rekha is that she has always gone out of her way to justify her roles on screen, even at the peak of her stardom, “I believe in being true to myself. I believe in being true to my work. I can’t cheat on my performances. For me my films are like my babies. I nurture them and look after them like a mother. When I agree to do a film I am with it all the way.” Despite being around for 36 years in the film industry, Rekha continues to be iconized by generations of new actresses. Says Rekha modestly, “I don’t know what they see in me. Maybe I am the last of a certain group of actresses. I had so many actresses including Meena Kumari to look up to. Maybe the new
generation of actresses have only poor little me to look up to.” However she goes on to add that she shares a great equation with some of the modernday actresses, “Whether it Vidya Balan or Katrina Kaif, I have a very good rapport with them. They are all very beautiful and very talented actresses. I am also working with Katrina in Fitoor. She’s someone I’ve known from the time she would drop in to meet Salman who is my neighbour.” Speaking of Fitoor Rekha says, “The director Abhishek Kapoor is a very talented boy. I am looking forward to seeing how he has interpreted the original novel (Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations). I’ve done a screen adaptation like Khoon Bhari Maang before. It will be interesting to see where the director takes this adaptation.” Fans crib about seeing so little of Rekha on screen and filmmakers find it difficult to connect with her but Rekha dismisses it off as a mere perception, “That excuse is not valid. I am right here and very open to acting offers. But I am happy with my life. I am doing exactly what I want to do. I hold no grudges against anyone. I always try to understand the mind of those whom I connect with. That makes life so much simpler,” she quips. The legendary actress is still a mystery to her admirers. “It’s not cultivated. I am constantly getting to know myself. Maybe when I have as many wrinkles on my face as Mother Teresa I reach a point of actual self-awareness,” says the actress. The fact remains that age and wrinkles and Rekha are far removed from one another. According to the actress, the key to her undying zest for life is her acceptance of experiences, good or bad. “I’ve accepted everything in life. My mother taught me to accept everything in life from age to criticism with humility. You’ve to have the confidence to carry your age without self-consciousness. I’m proud even of that wrinkle which appears on my face. It’s a symbol of all that life has taught me over the years. Aging is inevitable. All the choices I’ve made, all the people I’ve met, the hurt and the happiness, have all carved every contour on my face. I’m proud of them all,” she quips.

It charts the hour and minute, the month of the year, and the movements of the zodiac constellations as well as the phases of the moon. At each hour the clock chimes its various bells and figurines depicting various saints and apostles begin spinning in place. A mechanism of this complexity was no mean feat for Prague’s ancient clockmakers, and it’s considered among the greatest works of its kind in the world. It’s the beginning point of several free walking tours, which are run by extremely knowledgeable and entertaining volunteers. If a guided stroll through the city isn’t your speed, Old Town Square offers many bars, restaurants, and street performers eager to
impress a discerning traveler. The Charles Bridge Spanning the Vltava River, the Charles Bridge once made Prague rich by bottlenecking trade routes through the city. According to legend, its construction was begun when Emperor Charles IV laid the first stone himself at precisely 5:31 AM on July 9th in 1357. He was a strong believer in numerology, and he felt that that particular combination of numbers would lend the bridge magical protection. Though the bridge has suffered through its fair share of floods, violence, and reconstruction, it’s still standing to this day. Though the bridge is a bit crowded during the daytime, at night it offers some of the most beautiful views in the world. The city lights reflect off the river in a way that just begs to be photographed. Take your time crossing over, and prepare to be amazed. The Powder Gate A tall, imposing structure of black stone, the Powder Gate marks the entry point into Prague’s historic Old Town district. It’s one of the prime examples of Gothic architecture in the world. Angels and saints
hide in beautifully decorated alcoves along the Gate’s exterior, sporting gilded scepters and haloes. Castle lovers will find it a fun distraction if the hike up to the touristy Prague Castle doesn’t appeal. Like much of Prague’s landmarks, the Powder Gate saw its fair share of hardship. It held off anti-Semitic rioters in its early days, and was used to store gunpowder in the 17th century, hence its name. You can climb up to the top for a modest fee and see the city from a medieval person’s perspective. The Metronome No stranger to oppressors, even the hearty citizens of Prague despaired under the rule of Stalin and the Soviet Union. In 1955, a huge stone statue of the man flanked by workers was erected on a plinth overlooking the city center. It was the largest group statue in Europe at the time. It was taken down less than ten years later. The plinth sat empty until 1991, when a newly-freed Prague placed a tall, working metronome upon it. Its large orange baton swings back and forth every few seconds, a promise from the Czech people that time will go on and they will endure. www.visionasia.com.au | January 2015 17

FILMS just to be seen on
SCREEN Her latest film, PK, is being eagerly anticipated at the box-office but it is her costar Aamir Khan, who is the centre of attention more than anyone else. While her personal life has been making headlines over the past one year, the fact cannot be denied that Anushka has established her credentials as an actor in the past six years of her career. With six hits to her credit and a formidable line-up of films including Dil Dhadakne Do and Bombay Velvet, besides her own production, Anushka has her priorities clear. She talks about her journey in films and her equation with the two Khans.

FACE TO FACE
I don’t have the money to invest in IPL; my film is being made on a shoestring budget
Shah Rukh is a spontaneous actor whereas Aamir is methodical but I shared an excellent on-screen chemistry with both of them How challenging or easy was the role of Jagat Janani in PK? Did you have to work on the mannerisms? The role was definitely not an easy one considering that it is a character with a speech disability. I had to get the feel of the character and really had to work hard to make it look spontaneous and natural. I have always believed in getting into the thought process of my characters. Prior to this too, I always tried to get into the psychology of the my character, whether it was the role of Shruti Kakkar in Band Bajaa Baraat or the one in Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola. What was the experience like working with Aamir Khan considering that he is a method actor who believes in perfecting his role to the minutest detail? I had no problems with Aamir’s approach to work. On the contrary I could relate
to his meticulous style of working. That’s because I too have a similar approach to work and acting. Even in my school days, I never compromised on my hard work when it came to winning a race or participating in a dance or elocution competition. Having worked with both Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan, how different was the experience working with the two superstars? Shah Rukh is a spontaneous actor whereas Aamir is methodical but I shared an excellent on-screen chemistry with both of them. I never go by preconceived notions when I work with my co-stars, nor do I try to adjust to their style of acting. I just go by the character and the chemistry automatically follows. If you have a complete understanding of the role and share a great equation with your co-star, everything else falls in place.
How would you describe the experience of working with Rajkumar Hirani? The best part about working with Rajkumar Hirani is that he observes each actor’s traits be it positive or negative and uses it to his advantage. In my case, I have the tendency of switching from one thought process to another and going off tangent. My friends call me our lady of random segment due to this quality of mine. Hirani noticed this and used it effectively for my role in the film. Now that you have also turned producer with NH10, did you understand the economics of filmmaking while working as an actor in PK? It no doubt helps to understand the daytoday problems in producing a film, when you have experienced it yourself. Acting is an isolated job where you keep learning and reinventing yourself as an actor. On

the other hand, production is a collaborative effort. It is all about mounting a film in the right way and facilitating the whole process of story-telling. You have to plan the film at every step from the script to the locations, the creative inputs and the final execution. Fortunately for me, my brother was with me taking over the major part of the production process. Unlike your contemporaries who are eager to stay in the race, you have never gone on a signing spree? I never wanted to do films just to be seen on screen. I remember when I cut down on signing films people cautioned me that it was important to be seen from time to time and out of sight would eventually lead to being out of the minds of the audiences. But I had no such fears. I believed that my quality of work was more important than the quantity and stuck to my conviction. There was a buzz at one point that you also did a lip-job to get a fuller look. Why did you feel the need to do it? I have pretty much spoken about it in my tweets and in my media interaction. I did not go for a surgery; I just did a temporary filling for a better look. I decided to go for it because I felt it would help me in my character in Bombay Velvet. I have nothing to hide and I am pretty much honest about it. It was a temporary tool and I felt like doing it. Tell us about director Zoya Akhtar and your experience of working with her in your next film, Did Dhadakne Do? Zoya is an amazing director to work with. What makes working with her exciting is the fact that her characters are always well-defined and the relationship they share is 22 January 2015 | www.visionasia.com.au
elaborately defined. She has the knack of exploring simplicities and complexities of a character. What is your production NH 10 all about? Is it similar to Imtiaz Ali’s Highway? I have not seen Highway but I think the film was not really about a road trip. My film is about a road trip that goes wrong. It’s a thriller. We have travelled through the rustic terrains of Haryana in the film. Since I was also acting in the film, it was a very challenging task for me. It is a film made by young people. Each of us had our own ideas and opinions and there was fresh energy on the sets. Coming to your personal life, are wedding bells in the offing? I don’t want to talk about my personal life. People are free to see and draw their own conclusions and judgments but I am very clear that I will not comment on it. Actors are getting into buying sport teams; do you plan to get into IPL? I don’t have the money to invest in IPL; my film is being made on a shoestring budget. IPL teams are expensive affairs to get into. By S. Bhagat

I didn’t faint on the sets of Bajirao Mastani, clarifies Priyanka The news has been doing the rounds for a while now that Priyanka Chopra fainted on the sets of Bajirao Mastani and her hectic pace of work finally took its toll on her health. But the actress is rather amused about the rumours and recently made it a point to clarify the truth, “I did not faint on the sets. I merely swooned a little bit. In fact, it has been a long time time since I last fainted on a set. It is true that I am unwell because of the weather conditions because I was required to perform on dusty ground,” the actress revealed. Priyanka’s bigger concern was about the repercussions it would have on her equation with director Sanjay Bhansali, “I would like to add that this had nothing to do with the work pressure in Bajirao Mastani. Director Sanjay Leela Bhansali will throw me out of the sets if he hears something like this,” the actress chuckled.
Sonam Kapoor is the new favourite of the Khan brothers Sonam Kapoor is on a high these days working with the two Khan brothers in the industry. While she is doing Arbaaz Khan’s film, Dolly Ki Doli, Sonam has been paired opposite Salman Khan in Sooraj Barjatya’s Prem Ratan Dhan Paayo. Recently the actress was also seen promoting Dolly Ki Doli with Arbaaz and Salman on Big Boss. The three seemed to share a great comfort level with each other and were having a great time on the show. Recently when Sonam was asked how she would rate the two brothers in terms of her working experience with them she said, “I am in love with both of them as they are both wonderful people. The actress also added that she was excited about sharing screen space with Salman, “I have been a huge fan of Salman since my childhood days. It was the most memorable day of my life when my father introduced me to Salman for the first time. I just can’t get over the fact that I am working with him now,” she revealed. www.visionasia.com.au | January 2015 23

STARDOM
I see myself doing one film a year or directing some film. I cannot be a hero all my life 24 January 2015 | www.visionasia.com.au
ENCOUNTER
He is a man of few words. There was a time when Ajay Devgn shunned the media and hardly ever opened up to his co-stars. The reticent actor maintained a quiet silence letting his work do all the talking. Not much has changed ever since except for the fact that Ajay ranks among the topmost stars in the industry today. His body language and his intensity on screen are a big draw and he has consistently delivered hits at the box-office. The action man is back with his favourite genre of action comedy in Action Jackson. The actor speaks about his journey in the industry for over the last two decades. You seem to be an action-comedy loyalist with most of your films confirming to the genre including your latest film, Action Jackson. I never sign films keeping the genre in mind I want to explore different kinds of roles and I love doing emotional films too. Besides, every genre needs emotions be it action, drama or anything else. Directors do come to me with a feeling that I will be able to pull of such roles. I say yes when I read the script. Apart from that, I do such films for personal satisfaction.
I am of the opinion that once you achieve stardom, you will always remain a star in the minds of your audiences
Action Jackson also brought your dancing ability to the fore, which was not evident in your earlier films. Did you have to work hard? I owe it to my director Prabhu Deva, who is one of the best choreographers in the industry. I think he is also the best dancer in the country. I think nobody can dance the way he does. Initially, I had my own reservations about my ability to dance but Prabhu persisted and told me to try it out. He studies everybody’s body language and
makes it very easy for you. In our films, dancing is considered a prerequisite for a successful hero and I am glad I have lived up to expectations. Apparently your daughter was quite excited about your dance steps in the film. My children loved the song. My daughter Nysa felt that I had danced well and it was a very neat performance. You are also said to have gone through intensive physical training and lost weight for the role in Action Jackson? Prabhu Deva wanted me to be lean for the sword fights in the film. His contention was that, people who train for martial arts are usually lean. He insisted that I lose weight for the role and I abided by that. How different was the experience working with Prabhu Deva after having worked with your favourite director, Rohit Shetty? I think both are great directors in their own right. Both have their own unique style. The action in Prabhu’s films is different from that www.visionasia.com.au | January 2015 25

of Rohit Shetty. Also I noticed that Prabhu Deva is a very accomplished actor and his comic timing is different. How much creative interest do you take in the making of your films? I look into the creative aspect of my films on every front. I believe that creativity should never be compromised in the process of film-making. Sometimes we have very good stories penned by the best screen-play writers but then they make sense only when they are effectively delivered on screen. Great stories are often marred by a lack of proper direction. Salman often says that he looks into the first cut of the film. Do you believe in the same? I don’t interfere if it is a director like Rohit Shetty or Prabhu Deva but yes I do look into the final cut of my film. How do you see yourself in the next five years? Are you comfortable with the idea of cutting down on your work and retiring from acting? I have mentally prepared myself to retire one day. In fact, I have already begun the process of cutting down on work. Honestly I

see myself doing one film a year or directing some film. I cannot be a hero all my life. How do you look at the youngsters who have forayed into the industry? They are more than welcome. I think it is time for the youngsters to take over from the older generation of actors. Not just actors, I am also eager to welcome the younger lot of filmmakers and technicians who have brought a fresh perspective to the industry. Eventually everything has to change; it’s a very natural process. When we came into the industry we too replaced a few stars so it’s an ongoing process. Won’t you miss stardom? I have more than experienced stardom in the past few years and I am quite content with my career. I have been here for more than two decades and seen here and done that. I am of the opinion that once you achieve stardom, you will always remain a star in the minds of your audiences. It does not go away because you are no longer the top contender. What do you think of the Rs 100 crore and now Rs 200 crore club? There are no such clubs. The budgets of films
have gone up and there are films which are not successful even at Rs 100 crore. The cost of filmmaking has shot up and it is important that producers recover their investments so the idea is to cover what you have already spent on the film. What next? I am doing Shivay next. It’s an action drama. The hero of the film is a devotee of Shiva but it is a modern-day film. Are you religious and do you believe in Lord Shiva yourself? I am not religious but I am spiritual. I am also an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva. I have the same qualities. (Smiles) Like him I am hot tempered and cool at the same time. I believe in praying everyday though I do not go out of my way to do it. I generally pray like everyone else. By S. Bhagat

Produced by Arjun Kapoor’s father, Boney Kapoor (the producer of films like Mr India, Judaai and Wanted) in association with his uncle, Sanjay Kapoor, Tevar is the remake of the 2003 Telugu hit Okkadu starring Mahesh Babu and Bhumika Chawla. The film stars Arjun Kapoor, Sonakshi Sinha and Manoj Bajpayee, besides Kader Khan. One of the highlights of the film is the number ‘Radha Nachegi’, in which Sonakshi will be seen swinging to the beats of the number and matching steps with around 100 dancers. Arjun Kapoor has also paid a tribute to his mentor, Salman Khan in the opening song of the film, ‘Main To Superman, Salman Ka fan’. Tevar is scheduled to release on January 2, 2015. www.visionasia.com.au | January 2015 31

television’s newest mythological hero After Devon Ke Dev Mahadev which made Mohit Raina into a household name, it is the mythological epic Maha Kumbh which is expected to be a game-changer on STAR channel. Subhash K Jha speaks to Gautam Rode, who plays the main protagonist to find out what lies ahead.
Television actor Gautam Rode best known for his role in Saraswati Chandra, is geared up for the biggest challenge of his career in Maha Kumbh, which recently began telecast. The mythological serial is unarguably the most expensive and ambitious serial to be made on television. Gautam is seen playing the title role of Rudra in the serial. Taking a deep breath the actor plunges into a passionate description of his character. “He is mysterious, enigmatic, aggressive and secretive. He lives in a shamshan ghat. MahaKumbh is the story of Rudra’s journey.” The epic scale of the serial is also evident in the fact that it is being shot over the world, “The serial will take me all over the world. We’ve already shot in Poland, Allahabad and Varanasi. We will soon head for different parts of Europe,” says an excited Gautam. Another reason why Gautam is enthusiastic about the serial is the fact that the initial episodes of have been shot by Arvind

Babbal whom Gautam holds in the highest esteem. “He also shot the initial parts of Saraswatichandra. According to me he’s among the best talent I’ve worked with. Curiously Gautam began shooting for Maha Kumbh just days after Saraswatichandra closed down. “It was a 360-degree turn for my performing abilities. I feel blessed to have two contrasting roles one after the other. Maha Kumbh blends elements from Hindu mythology with the international espionage thriller.” Gautam feels that the serial is unlike anything he has ever seen on the Indian television screen, “It is completely different. We don’t look at MahaKumbh as just another serial. We haven’t had a game-changer on Indian television for a very long time. We hope this one will make difference to the way audiences look at the home-viewing medium,” he avers. Unlike other mythological shows which stretch on endlessly, this show has a finite life-span. Exults Gautam, “We’re doing two seasons of 60 episodes each. We’ve already shot 20 episodes.” Significantly MahaKumbh replaces another game-changer Devon Ke Dev Mahadev, which created record TRPs on the Life OK channel. It may be recalled that the mythological had also made Mohit Raina into a household name. Gautam is aware of the responsibility being thrust on him but he insists that his serial is not in competition with any other serial. “MahaKumbh is not competing with any other show for the simple reason that it doesn’t have any parallels on television and in my career. I am grateful to STAR for giving me an opportunity like this so soon after Saraswatichandra.”
Gautam has no plans to use his success on television as a stepping stone to films. “Everyone who comes to the entertainment industry wants to be a film actor. There is hardly anyone who wants to be a television actor by choice. I want to change the perception of Indian television as being the poor man’s medium. When I hear people making derogatory remarks about television actors, I tell them to try doing the work we do on television and experience the unearthly hours we put in. There is no time for anything else.” Quite understandably, Gautam has found no time for love, “I am single and my mother is worried. Like every mother she too wants
me to get married. Now when I’m into my 30s, I feel I can’t wait for the work-load to slow down. Instead I need to find someone who will accompany me in my professional journey,” quips television’s pin-up boy.

After making a mark on the minds of the audiences with his role of Raghav in Ek Mutthi Asmaan, the tall and handsome Ashish Chaudhary is set to indulge in some dare-devil action in Colors’ Fear Factor Khatron Ke Khiladi. The actor, who has battled some of the biggest challenges in his life, recounts the story of how he fought the battle of survival against all odds in a conversation with Subhash K Jha.
Film and television actor, Ashish Chaudhary is all excited about the newest challenge in his career and life. The actor who has gone through several upheavals in his life is all geared up for the next season of Khatron Ke Khiladi.

Few are aware that Ashish’s personal life has been all about tough challenges and difficult times. The film and television actor had almost plunged to the nadir of depression after he lost his sister Monica and brother-in-law Ajit in the 26/11 terror attacks in Mumbai. Recalling the days when he desperately tried to seek hope in the dark days of despair Ashish says, “I was devastated after I lost my sister Monica and brother-in-law Ajit to the terror attacks. I began to pick up the shattered pieces of my heart. My wife
Shamita decided to look after my sister’s two children and do everything possible for them.” Ashish had hardly recovered from the shock when his family was hit struck by another catastrophe, “My parents met with a nearfatal road accident. My mother broke her spine and my father fractured his right arm in two places. My wife went into a depression and had to be hospitalized. At one point all three of my most loved onesmy parents and my wife were in hospital together. As if that was not enough, our dog was dying at the same time,” the actor recalled with tears in his eyes. In his desperate bid to come out of his personal problems, Ashish also lost his movie career. There came a time when Ashish stared at a near-empty bank account. “My

wife was pregnant with our son Agastya and I had merely Rs 7,000 rupees in my account. I realized that my career as an actor had virtually got over while I tried to handle the crisis at home.” The actor who had made a name for himself on television then ventured into entrepreneurship. Fortunately he made the right moves and took the decisions in the nick of time to come out of his financial mess. However his ordeal was not yet over. At one point, Ashish became superstitious and began to believe in the stories of evil spirits and people with mean intentions. This was when he realized that his sweet home had become a dwelling for a whole army of termites, “The entire home was suddenly overtaken by termites. When the pest control people came they said they had seen nothing like it. As if that was not enough, my car suddenly burnt down. To this day no one knows how and why it happened. That’s when I began to believe in buri nazar. My friends Farah Ali Khan (Sanjay Khan’s daughter) and Wardha Nadiadwala (producer Sajid Nadiadwala’s wife) did pujas and rituals to ward off whatever evil had overtaken my life. Because evil had undoubtedly become the ruling factor in my life,” Ashish recalls. It was at this time that Ashish decided to return to television. “That’s where I had started my career and that’s where I rediscovered my bearings. My serial Ek Mutthi Aasman has brought me the kind of fan-following that I never imagined.” So much so that crazy young girls began to tattoo his name on their hands, “I told them not to do anything to embarrass their parents. It was mind-blowing to see all that crazy adulation after being in the serial for just eight months. I had
never experienced the same amount of fame during my stint in movies like Double Dhamaal.” Today, Ashish’s life has done a complete turn-around. “Today I am far more appreciative of what I have in life. I am also financially sound to look after my wife, parents and my five children. My bread comes from my business ventures. Acting provides the butter,” he says. The five children that Ashish refers to are his son Agastya, just-born twin daughters (yet to be named) and his deceased sister’s two children Kanishk and Ananya. Ashish has bought two adjacent homes in a Mumbai high-rise, one for his wife and five kids and the other for his parents. Ashish particularly dotes on his son, Agastya, “If I have survived the blows of fate that I was dealt non-stop after 26/11, it’s because of Agastya. His smile kept all of us hopeful in times of despair. We would pass him around, cuddle him and feel revived.” The latest entrants in his life are his twin daughters, who have brought new happiness to the whole family. “.” At the time of giving this interview, Ashish was busy preparing for the stint in his newest show, Khatron Ke Khiladi. He had a smile on his face and was on the lookout for suitable names for his twin daughters. “I am heading for South Africa to participate in Khatron Ke Khiladi. But before I do we are going to lock in on names for my two girls. I can’t believe the joy they bring to me each time I see them,” he quipped. For Ashish the fight for survival and the real life challenge is already over.

the films that made a statement No year in living memory has spewed so much garbage on the screen. This was the year of ‘wreckoning’ for Bollywood with mass entertainment hitting a new low. Alister stars happily lent their presence to unapologetic trash, giving a new twist to the whole debate on what sells, and why. In a year where masterpieces were hard to come the following are the ones that stood out. By Subhash K Jha

QUEEN
This was Kangana Ranaut’s own little Mother India where she plays a Delhi girl who decides to go on her honeymoon alone when her partner jilts her at the altar. It later emerged that the film had some disturbing similarities to an unreleased film, Parvati Balagopan’s Phir Zindagi, diluting the pleasure quotient of Kangna’s odyssey into self-actualization. However all was forgiven the minute she jumped onto the bar-room counter to dance to Asha Bhosle’s Hungama ho gaya. Crisply cut and enchanting in its narration, Queen was the English Vinglish of 2014.

In hindsight Imtiaz Ali’s road film was hugely flawed. Any girl from a cultured family who enjoys her kidnapper’s company ought to be provided psychiatric help. It is difficult to fathom why any girl would fall in love with Randeep Hooda’s character. Born to be a star, Alia made Highway an exceptional experience. Otherwise, please Mr Ali, get real.

HAIDAR
It was meant to be Shakespeare recreated in Kashmir. In hindsight, Vishal Bharadwaj was very self-indulgent in parts. The grave-diggers bursting into a song and dance, the entire speech of Haidar on the crossroads in the heart of Srinagar and the bravado was not entirely effortless. There is also no denying the power of the plot and the immense sensitivity of the actors. Shahid Kapoor in the title role is likely to walk away with all the awards. But as eminent author Salman Rushdie who recently watched the film put it, it is Tabu who holds the film together.
Mary kom, Sanjay Bhansali zyada. The story of a Manipuri girl’s rise to wrestling heights was packaged as a high-voltage melodrama filled with sound and fury. Debutant director Omang Kumar gave breath to Mary Kom’s life and Priyanka Chopra breathed spirit into the character, though she could’ve played it at a lower octave. Every moment didn’t have to be about showing off.

RANG RASIYA
Ketan Mehta was back with an accomplished, wellmounted, thoughtful and provocative bio-pic on the life and art of Raja Ravi Varma. The film looked and felt good. It didn’t strike a single false note. Randeep Hooda was far more sharp and engaging here than in Highway where the relatively inexperienced Alia stole the show.
During a year when Happy New Year and Bang Bang brought the entertainment down to the level of a circus, Amole Gupte’s moving film about an economically challenged boy’s (Partho Gupte) struggle to become a skating champ, showed how evolved our cinema can get. Not quite as bright as Stanley Ka Dabba, Hawa Hawaai gave dignity to a child’s dream.

Shah Rukh fans, who were waiting outside his bungalow Mannat to catch a glimpse of the superstar, were recently anxious when they saw their favourite hero being denied entry into his own bungalow by his security guards. TELEVISION
The year 2014 witnessed a variety of shows on the Indian television scene. From soaps to historical shows, reality shows, comedy and dance shows, television channels were busy wooing audiences with the best of qualitative entertainment even as viewership ratings of shows touched new highs. The common factor about a majority of these shows was that all of them had rich production values, great costumes, detailing and vibrant characterizations. Vision Asia presents a list of shows that kept the audiences glued to their television sets during the year.
UDAAN (COLORS)
The touching story of seven-year-old Chakor, against the backdrop of bonded labour in Indian villages, struck a new chord with the audiences who began to follow Chakor’s story. The serial which began telecast in August went on to achieve record TRPs even as Chakor battled the odds and cruised through some of the most difficult times. The biggest draw of the serial was Spandana Chaturvedi, who has been making waves in the role of the 7-year old Chakor. Her innocent looks and her immense talent made the little girl a great favourite with the audiences. Spandana was earlier seen in Sanskaar on the same channel and has also done the role of child Madhubala (Rishbala’s daughter), but it is the role of Chakor that has made a big difference to her career.
INDIA’S RAW STAR: (STAR PLUS) MERI AASHIQUI TUMSE HI (COLORS)
A complex love story from Balaji Telefilms revolving around a rich and beautiful girl Ishani (Radhika Madaan) and her poor admirer, the son of the domestic help Ranveer (Shakti Arora), Meri Aashiqui Tumse Hi had an uncanny resemblance to Emily Bronte’s novel Wuthering Heights. The socalled adaptation of the classic novel which has also been adapted to three movies earlier, found great following among young girls and boys, who were glued on to the television sets to find more about Ranveer and Ishani’s fate. The love-hate drama has been on the list of most-watched shows even as Ekta Kapoor has been bringing new twists to the tale to retain the attention of the audiences. 46 January 2015 | www.visionasia.com.au
TARAK MEHTA KA ULTAH CHASHMA: (SAB TV)
This simple story of Gokuldham society with characters like Jethalal, Daya, Sodhi and Popatlal, has enthralled viewers over the years. The show has connected excellently to the family audiences and is considered to be one of the most popular shows in the allround entertainment category. This year the show was even more in the limelight when the Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi invited the Tarak Mehta team for the Swach Bharat Abhiyan. Recently the creative team decided to introduce another element by introducing the character of Dayaben’s mother. With the rate at which this show has managed to engage viewers’ attention, it is expected to achieve a new high in the coming year.
The show is only in its first season but it is already being eagerly followed by audiences. The credit goes to maker Gajendra Singh who has designed the show and its mentor, Yo Yo Honey Singh, who also has a huge following of his own. The talents in the show are probably the best. Whether it is Darshan or Geoffrey Iqbal or the winner, Rituraj Mohanty, they all have some extra ordinary singing skills. The show opened very well but Honey Singh got unwell in the intervening phase because of which he had to leave the show mid way. He was replaced by music director Himesh Reshamiya who tried his level best to match up to Honey’s style. The show has seen some extra ordinary jugalbandi within the singers. The winner Rituraj Mohanty who hails from Orrissa is a deserving winner and India has got a new talented singer.

DEIVAM THANTHA VEEDU: (STAR VIJAY) DIYA AUR BAATI HUM: (STAR PLUS)
This year has been a wonderful journey for the show, which has been consistently high on the TRP charts and has proved to be a huge success on Indian television. The show started with a simple story of a middle class girl Sandhya who wants to become an IAS officer but circumstances force her to get married to a sweets vendor, Sooraj Rathi. However it is her husband who helps Sandhya to fulfill her ambitions. The show recently took a turn with the entry of a criminal who tries to trap the Rathi family. Fortunately the evil part is coming to an end with Sandhya Rathi saving her daughter-in-law and husband Sooraj. While the show has become extremely popular, it has also increased the popularity rating of Deepika Singh who plays the lead role of Sandhya in the serial.
DID SUPERMOM
After the success of Dance India Dance, which was the pioneering show for dance reality shows, its sub-franchises Dance Ke Superstars, DID Dance Ka Tashan, Dance India Dance Li’l Masters, Dance Ke Super Kids and Dance India Dance Doubles, all had their own share of success. However, it was Dance India Dance Super Moms that outdid similar shows on other channels and proved to be one of the biggest winners in terms of its viewership ratings and its following. The show is a platform to display the dance talent hidden in the woman who is the centre of everyone’s life, a mother. The show has witnessed the sterling performances of many women who had to work in tandem with their family in order to realise their dreams and aspirations of dancing. Zee TV has helped several such moms to fulfill their dreams and prove to the world that they are indeed super moms
Deivam Thantha Veedu is the story of two cousins who have contrasting personalities and are completely different from each other. Seetha is innocent, gullible and illiterate while Priya is shrewd and greedy. The story takes a turn when there is a marriage proposal for the two girls. Chitra (Sudha Chandran) seeks a daughter-in -law for her son Ram Kumar Chakravarthy. Ram is already in love with Vanitha and (Ram’s sister) Kalpana is in love with Dinesh (Vanitha’s brother). When Chitra chooses Seetha over Priya as her daughter-in-law, Banumathy (Priya’s mom) is devastated. Ram agrees to marry Seetha out of respect for his mother without knowing that Seetha is illiterate. Kalpana tries to make Seetha deny the marriage because her love is at stake. Seetha marries Ram and Priya tricks Ravi (Ram’s cousin) into marrying her. Then the story revolves around the two girls who face problems in there in-laws house. The serial has been running on Star Vijay for the past one and a half years and has had a consistent following during this period.
KAUN BANEGA CROREPATI: (SONY TV)
Kaun Banega Crorepati, the Indian adaptation of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire by Freemantle, debuted with a bang in its eighth season, raking in viewership of 8.96 million for its grand premiere episode. At one stage, the show outdid the other popular ones like Diya Aur Baati Hum (Star Plus), Jodha Akbar (Zee TV) and Kumkum Bhagya (Zee TV). Over the weeks it was superstar Amitabh Bachchan’s continued charisma and his ability to connect with each of the participants that went on to build up the success rating of the show. The show’s performance also helped Sony Entertainment Television (SET), the flagship general entertainment channel (GEC) from Multi Screen Media (MSM), scale up to number four on the TAM ratings chart. www.visionasia.com.au | January 2015 47

MAHABHARAT: (STAR PLUS) JAMAI RAJA: (ZEE)
Produced by Akshay Kumar and co-produced by Ashwini Yardi, Rashmi Sharma and Sagar Arts, this show began telecast on 4th August and managed to make a mark among family audiences. The story of how a mother’s and daughter’s life changes after a son-inlaw comes into their lives, clicked instantly with the female audiences, who could identify with it. The mother’s refusal to accept her “middleclass” son-in-law also brought a new emotional quotient to the show.
The epic was remade for the second time on Indian television. Before this it was B.R. Chopra’s Mahabharat that had set the records. So when Swastik Productions decided to make this epic again there were great expectations from the epic serial. The show started with a lukewarm response and the first three months were average but soon after the Pandavas and Kauravas literally stormed the television with their popularity. The show got the biggest response when the Kurukshetra war began, especially in the episode when Krishna narrated the Bhagavad-Gita to Arjun on the battlefield. Another highlight of this show is the amazing camera work and great costumes, both of which have contributed to its success story.
COMEDY NIGHTS WITH KAPIL: (COLORS)
The show’s success story is synonymous with the success story of stand-up comedian, Kapil Sharma, who emerged as one of the most successful comedians on the television scene. The show’s immense popularity also proved to be an ideal platform for the topmost Bollywood stars who invariably promoted their films on the show. Kapil’s spontaneity and his ability to engage Bollywood stars and others in witty conversations also made a big difference. At one point, the show got into a controversy when Guthi aka Sunil Grover left the show and came up with his own version in a competitive channel. But Sunil failed to impress his audiences and returned to Kapil’s show soon after. The highlight of the show was the episode when yesteryears diva Rekha appeared in one of the episodes and mesmerised the audiences with her singing style. 48 January 2015 | www.visionasia.com.au
JODHA AKBAR: (ZEE)
This was Ekta Kapoor’s first attempt to a do a historical show and she nailed it. The show had a positive buzz right from the beginning and actor Rajat Tokas who plays Samrat Akbar and Paridhi Sharma who plays Jodha got an extraordinary response from the audiences. The rumour goes that the lead Rajat and Paridhi can’t see eye to eye but in front of the camera they behave professionally. Apparently, it is the romantic element in the storyline that has caught the fascination of the viewers. Ekta Kapoor has presented the historical facts and stuck on to her decision of narrating the real love story of Jodha and Akbar, which seem to have worked for the show.

MERE RANG MEIN RANGNEWALI: (LIFE OK)
Life OK has brought alive the bitter-sweet pill of romance with this new show which tells the story of two opposite individuals who get into a wedlock by accident. The show helmed by the master of storytelling, Sooraj Barjatiya presents the youthful story of the 21-year old Radha and 22-year old, Liladha, beyond the clichĂŠs of teenage romance. Set in the backdrop of Mumbai and Mathura, the show features an ensemble cast. It recently began telecast on November 17, 2014 and has been making a steady progress in its TRP ratings. Like all Rajshri Productions, this one too is a big bet among family audiences, who get together to watch the show.
NADUVULA KONJAM DISTURB PANNUVOM: (STAR VIJAY)
Naduvula Konjam Disturb Pannuvom is a Tamil celebrity game show on Vijay TV. The game is played by four celebrities who are invited as contestants to the show. The show is grouped into four rounds and is hilarious and entertaining to the core. Not surprisingly, it is very popular among fun-loving television viewing audiences.
MAHARANA VEER PRATAP (SONY) JHALAK DIKHHLA JAA (COLORS)
The journey of leading celebrities getting into their dancing shoes and struggling week after week for perfect scores, wooing the judges, making vote appeals, to becoming flawless performers and contending for the trophy, kept the viewers glued to their TV sets no end. This season like the earlier seasons was not just about dancing but also about the hard work, emotions and the exciting moments and the not-so-exciting moments of success and failure. For the audiences, the show was always the inspirational point for achieving the unachievable in life. Undoubtedly, Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa Season 7 was one of the most entertaining and stellar shows on the channel.Â
Around 400 years back, Afghans, Turks and then the Mughals, had a burning desire to establish their control over a prosperous India. But even in these hard times, there was one province which gave a bold fight to these enemies- the kingdom of Mewar. In these troubled times, the soil of Mewar gave birth to its bravest son, Maharana Pratap who became an emblem for courage for the entire country. This is the story of a great warrior king, who in personal life is an ideal son to his father, a loving son to his step mother who hates him, a soothing leader to his people in their difficult times and trials. Besides the story of a Rajput prince who got his throne as a birthright from his father, the story of Maharana Pratap is the journey of a boy Pratap, who much later would earn his title Maharana, through his own deeds and dedication. This epic historical reached a new high when the audiences developed a strong affinity for Faisal Khan, (winner of the reality show Dance India Dance), who played the role of the young Maharana Pratap. The show which was launched in May last year recently took a leap with the grown up Maharana Pratap, played by Sharad Malhotra, making his entry on the scene. The TRP ratings initially took a dip and later went to a steady high as the story continued to go places with Sharad playing the protagonist. www.visionasia.com.au | January 2015 49

Makes 4 servings INGREDIENTS For The Paneer Mutter Mixture 1/2 cup low-fat paneer cubes 1/4 cup boiled green peas 1/4 cup finely chopped onions 1 tsp chilli-garlic paste 1/2 tsp ginger-green chilli paste 1/2 cup fresh tomato pulp 1/2 tsp chilli powder 1/2 tsp garam masala A pinch of sugar 1/2 tsp dried fenugreek leaves (kasuri methi) Salt to taste FOR THE ONION BROWN RICE
METHOD For the Paneer Mutter Mixture 1. Heat a non-stick pan on a medium flame. Add the onions and dry roast on a medium flame for 1 to 2 minutes or till they turn light brown in colour. Sprinkle a little water if they start burning. 2. Add the chilli-garlic paste, ginger-green chilli paste and 1 tbsp of water and dry roast on a medium flame for about 1 minute. 3. Add the fresh tomato pulp, chilli powder, garam masala, sugar and dried fenugreek leaves, mix well and cook on a medium flame for 2 to 3 minutes. 4. Add ¼ cup of water, mix well and cook on a medium flame for another 2 minutes. 5. Add the paneer, green peas and salt, mix gently and cook on a medium flame for 1 more minute. Remove from the flame and keep aside. For the onion brown rice 1. Heat a deep non-stick pan on a medium flame and when hot, add the onions and dry roast on a medium flame for 2 minutes or till the onions turn brown. Sprinkle 1 tbsp of water to prevent the onions from burning. 2. Add the brown rice and salt, mix well and cook on a medium flame for 1 minute. 3. Divide the rice into 2 equal portions and keep aside.

Kewra Phirni Kewra essence is a flavouring substance extracted from the flower of the Pandanus or screw pine tree. An irresistible flavour, it is commonly used in north India and Pakistan, as well as in places like Australia and the Pacific Islands, where the trees are found in large numbers. This Kewra Phirni is nothing but traditional milk and rice phirni flavoured with kewra essence, which gives it an exotic and rich touch. Soaking time: 1 hour Setting Time: 1 hour Preparation Time: 5 mins Cooking Time: 15 mins Makes 4 servings INGREDIENTS 4 cups full-fat milk 5 tbsp long grained rice (basmati) 1/4 cup sugar 5 to 6 drops of kewra essence FOR THE GARNISH 1 tbsp pistachio slivers
METHOD 1. Soak the rice in a small bowl using enough water for about 1 hour. 2. Drain all the water and grind the rice in a mixer to a coarse mixture. 3. Transfer the mixture into a bowl and add ½ cup of cold milk to the rice, mix well till smooth. 4. Boil the remaining 3½ cups of milk in a deep non-stick pan, add the rice-milk mixture, mix well and cook on a slow flame for 10 minutes, while stirring occasionally. 5. Add the sugar, mix well and cook on a slow flame for another 2 minutes while stirring continuously. 6. Remove from the flame and allow the mixture to cool completely. 7. Add the kewra essence and mix well. 8. Refrigerate for at least 1 hour and serve chilled garnished with pistachio slivers.

Arjun Rampal to direct Ranbir Kapoor in ROY? Arjun Rampal is all set to don the hat of a director, not in real life but reel life. Arjun will be seen directing none other than Ranbir Kapoor in the forthcoming romantic thriller, Roy. In the film Arjun plays the role of director Kabir Grewal, who directs two films based on Roy’s life with Roy in the lead. Ranbir Kapoor whose name in the film is also Roy is actually a big thief who has pulled off impossible heists. He has dodged bullets, chased cars and yet no one has been able to get him. On the other hand, Jacqueline Fernandez who is the lead actress of the film will be seen in a double role for the very first time and will be seen romancing both the men Arjun and Ranbir. It certainly seems to be an interesting characterization for Arjun, after a long time. Not surprisingly, the actor is eagerly looking forward to the release of the film.

Kapil Sharma is the new favourite of Abbas Mustan Stand-up comedian Kapil Sharma, who is known to be a hot favourite among Bollywood celebrities, has now caught the fascination of directors, Abbas Mustan, who find him “simply amazing”. The ace comedian has just begun shooting for his Bollywood debut, Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon, with the directorial duo and they are impressed with his penchant for comedy. “Comedy is in Kapil Sharma’s blood so much so that he can come up with 6-7 variations in each scene. Kapil is also an impromptu and spontaneous actor and is professional to the core. He understands every scene and it’s a delight to direct him,” Abbas and Mustan recently revealed. Thanks to Kapil’s presence, the entire unit of the film is said to be having a ball of a time shooting with the comic actor, who keeps the unit entertained with his sense of humour. Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon will see the acclaimed director duo of Abbas-Mustan venturing into the comedy genre for the first time but the directors are confident that the film is heading for one big laugh riot that will redefine the entertainment formula.
Kangana Ranaut becomes a hot bet in endorsement market Kangana Ranaut, who is looked upon as the dark horse of the industry, represents everything that is unconventional. Any other actress in her place would have gone on a signing spree-be it films or brand endorsements but Kangana has always opted for the choices she strongly believes in. That also explains why she has never capitalized on her popularity to get into the endorsement race. The latest on Kangana’s front is that she has been approached by a food and beverage brand for a whopping amount. The brand managers in question already have a top actress endorsing it, but they are now looking for a new face. However, Kangana is said to be taking her own sweet time before she gives a nod. Apparently the actress wants to be convinced that the decision of endorsing the brand will indeed make a difference to her and her career. 64 January 2015 | www.visionasia.com.au
