Is Abhishek Bachchan
planning to opt out of the Dhoom series?
A recent box-office survey has established that Dhoom 3 has the sole distinction of making it to the Rs 250 crore club, even leaving Chennai Express behind. However, one of the key protagonists of the franchise, Abhishek Bachchan, who has played the character of Jai in the series, is skeptical about being a part of the subsequent series. In a conversation with Subhash K Jha, Abhishek voiced his apprehensions.
While Abhishek Bachchan admitted not so long ago that he was delighted with the success of Dhoom-3, the actor does not seem to be very keen in ensuring his participation in the subsequent series. In a recent interview, Abhishek said that he may choose not to be a part of the next Dhoom series. He made this surprise comment when asked about how he felt about reprising the role of Jai over the years. “Why should I keep playing the character of Jai each time? Whether I do Dhoom 4 or not depends entirely on the script. I will hear the script and take a call only after I like it, whenever it happens. I won’t blindly do Dhoom 4 just because I was in the first three films.” The reasons for Abhishek’s stand are not clear but the fact cannot be denied that there was some disappointment among his fans about the length of his role in Dhoom-3, a fact that Abhishek does not deny, “Yes there could’ve been more for me to do,” Abhishek agreed a tad unhappily. The actor also went on to recall how he was a constant in the Dhoom franchise’s journey from the time it took off in 2004. He seemed to take pride in the fact that he was indispensable to the franchise. “The franchise chronicles the ongoing adventures of Jai and Ali, that’s me and Uday. That has been the format of the franchise so far, though the other characters come and go. It is comparable to Batman & Robin. Can there be a Batman franchise without Batman?” he asked. 4 March 2014 | www.visionasia.com.au
He however felt that the Dhoom franchise had towered above its actors and was now being watched for being what it was. “Dhoom 2 had Hrithik and Aishwarya and now Dhoom 3 had Aamir and Katrina. Now the brand Dhoom is much larger than the star-cast.” Abhishek also revealed that Dhoom 3 brought new challenges to the table for him and Uday Chopra with a new director, Vijay Krishna Acharya coming on board. “The other two Dhoom films were not directed by Victor (Vijay Krishna Acharya). So there was a new feel and flavour to the franchise that Uday and I could identify with since Victor had a different vision. Earlier the focus was on making a fun film. Dhoom 3 was an edgier and darker Dhoom in comparison to the first two, but we enjoyed the challenge.”
Why should I keep playing the character of Jai each time? Whether I do Dhoom 4 or not depends entirely on the script.

He is lately known as the man with the Midas touch. From being a successful producerdirector to an actor, singer, writer and more, the multifaceted Farhan Akhtar has made a success of all his endeavours in life. After sweeping the box-office with his last film, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, Farhan is back with a different film, Shaadi Ke Side Effects. In an interview, he talks about his choice of roles, the priorities in his professional and personal life, besides his new campaign MARD. 8 March 2014 | www.visionasia.com.au
COVER STORY
When do the side-effects start showing in Shaadi Ke Side Effects? I guess the side-effects in all marriages start some day, sooner or later. In this film, the husband and wife begin to feel that there is something amiss in their relationship. The man has his own dreams, he aspires to become a musician and record an album. Somewhere he begins to get the feeling that his marriage is coming in the way of fulfilling his dream. His problems multiply when the kids come into the picture and his dreams seem distant.
Let’s start with your upcoming film Shaadi Ke Side Effects. What made you take up the film? I have often said that romantic films are my least favourite but the story of this film reminded me of Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s style of story-telling. It tackled the problems of life in a light and simple manner and I found it very interesting.
uires q e r e l o If a r repare of me to p go out I , f l e s my o do it t y a w my
Your pairing with Vidya is also being seen as rather unusual. This is not the first time my pairing with any actress is being considered unusual. Prior to this when I worked with Konkana in Luck By Chance, everyone felt that the pair was a mismatch. Again in Karthik Calling Karthik, I worked with Deepika so it was an unusual casting. In Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, I was paired against Sonam Kapoor and this casting was an out of the ordinary too. How was it working with Vidya? I like working with professional people and Vidya is a very professional and easygoing person. She’s a good co-star.
Have you ever had differences of opinion with your wife, Adhuna? How do you handle the glitches? I was 17 and Adhuna was four years older to me, when I fell in love with her. She had returned from the U.S. and belonged to a well-to-do family. She was successfully managing her salon, when I met her. I was studying and had not yet started earning. She was a Hindu but my family had no problems on that account. I married early as I didn’t want to be away from her. Adhuna has always been a very understanding wife. There have been times when I have made mistakes and argued with her but she has never let me down. She is the one who has always maintained a balance in our relationship. We have two daughters and Adhuna is always the caretaker of the family. Your last film, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, won you accolades from the audiences and critics. How did it feel with all the appreciation? Bhaag Milkha Bhaag took me out of my comfort zone. I worked hard on other films too but this film was a challenge in itself. Now directors approach me because they feel confident that I can take up anything that may or may not be in my zone. Are you a method actor? I am not a trained actor. If a role requires me to prepare myself, I go out of my way to do it. I try to adapt myself to the character. When I did films like Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara or Rock On, I didn’t work on my roles as it was not required. But when a role requires me to give time and effort, I find it challenging I tried to give my best to Bhaag Milkha Bhaag. www.visionasia.com.au | March 2014

COVER STORY
Do you think Bhaag Milkha Bhaag has created an impetus for biopics? Making a biopic is not easy; telling a story in three hours is not easy either. Every person has a positive and negative side to him. So it depends on how you try to put across the crux of the story with the information you have. We have such interesting people in all fields be it in politics, cinema or sports. Considering that you are a reckoned filmmaker in your own right, how do you find the experience working under other directors? I define my parameters in everything that I do. I make sure I don’t get confused when I am working with other directors. I am an actor purely on the sets when I am acting. We want to make a good film so we don’t compromise creatively on the sets, we don’t work in isolation. It’s team work and there is no pressure. When you are open-minded, a positive energy is created on the sets and it translates on screen.
I believe in striking a balance in whatever I do, whether as a producer, writer or a singer
10 March 2014 | www.visionasia.com.au
You are a director, producer, actor, performer, and singer. How do you manage to multitask? I have my family, wife and people who I work with and who help me manage my schedules. Apart from that, I believe in striking a balance in whatever I do, whether as a producer, writer or a singer. I cannot direct when I am acting and vice versa. In the interim period I take up a role that interests me. For me, it is important to be passionate about everything I do. Between writing, acting and direction, what excites you most? I am in love with my writing and direction but at the moment acting has become a passion. When directors love your work and want to explore that side of you, it becomes all the more exciting.
COVER STORY
de en I have ma h w s e m ti n ee e There have b dhuna but sh A h it w d e u g d ar mistakes an t me down has never le Will we ever see you doing a complete commercial potboiler? I never say never to anything that comes my way. I will continue to do films that I believe in but that doesn’t mean I will never attempt a commercial film. I am not against doing a commercial film. If I come across a script I will even make one such film.
Unlike most other actors, you are not very active on social media? I don’t find it in good taste to talk about everything and anything. I don’t like to talk much about my films or tweet about them on someone else’s social forum. I do like to use the medium if my opinion is important to share with the world.
You have worked with Amitabh Bachchan. Would you like to direct him some day? I worked with Mr Bachchan in Luck By Chance. I am also working with him in September in a film being produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra. I would love to work with him as a director if I find a role worthy of his stature.
What change would you like to bring about in Bollywood? If I want to do anything for the film industry, I would like to prioritize safety measures on the sets. At times film crews are not fully equipped to tackle accidents on sets. It is important that the unit members also get proper medical attention. I feel that all these things should be taken care of.
What about television? Will we see you hosting or judging a reality show? I had last done the fourth season of Nach Baliye but I don’t have any such plans for now. My hands are full with three films. There is a lot of work so I don’t think I will get a chance to do anything else. What about your father, is he writing anything for you? I want dad to write for me. If nothing, I will at least support him as a producer. What next? I am doing Zoya’s film next, after which I will start with the production of Rock On-2. I will also be singing for the film. Do you feel that the industry is going through a transition period? A lot of good cinema is coming. Films like Kahaani, Kai Po Che and others, have changed the concept of entertainment. Also a lot of young talent is coming in the form of music, direction and acting. I think it’s an exciting period for the film industry. There has to be a transition or else it will become stagnant.
Tell us about MARD (Men Against Rape and Discrimination) - the new social outfit that you have floated. How is the response? Response is a strange word. We are using a platform and initiative to spread awareness. It’s up to us how much we can travel for the initiative. Initially we wanted to take the message to colleges and schools. We wanted kids to start thinking differently from the majority of people with a certain mind set. You can’t blame them for thinking like that because they are brought up thinking like that. Instead of giving lectures to students, I decided that the best way to get the message across was to play music. Now we have managed to connect through Magic bus which is reaching out to children. We have agreed to take two guitars and sing to them to spread this knowledge. What do you do when you are not working? I like to cook, I love cooking South Asian food. I also love dancing so I practice dancing. By S. Bhagat www.visionasia.com.au | March 2014 11

The master of
all trades
He redefined the parameters of acting with his stupendous performance in his last film, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag. From being a producer to a director, actor, singer and more, Farhan Akhtar has proved his creative potential on all fronts. 12 March 2014 | www.visionasia.com.au
Background
His directorial debut
Born on 9 January 1974, Farhan Akhtar is the son of screen writers, Javed Akhtar and Honey Irani. He is also the grandson of poet Jan Nisar Akhtar who was a part of the Progressive Writers’ Movement. He did his schooling at Maneckji Cooper and went on to study Commerce in H.R. College, Mumbai, but was dismissed due to lack of attendance in the second year itself. However that didn’t prevent him from exploring his creative instincts. The literary background of his family had its effect on him, when he started writing at an early age. His elder sister Zoya too is one of the most successful directors of today.
When he was 27, the actor decided to direct his first feature film. He established a production company called Excel Entertainment along with his friend, Ritesh Sidhwani and made his directorial debut with Dil Chahta Hai in 2001. The film starring Aamir Khan, Akshaye Khanna and Saif Ali Khan went on to become a box-office hit. The film, a story of three friends’ journey in life and relationship with each other, also won a National Award.
th
His foray into films Farhan started working as an assistant director to Yash Chopra in Lamhe (1991) when he was 17 years old. Later he joined an ad film agency named Script Shop. He assisted director Pankaj Parashar in Himalay Puttra (1997). Both the films were written by his mother Honey Irani.
In 2004, he directed Lakshya with Hrithik Roshan and Preity Zinta, a film about an aimless youngster setting a goal for himself, which was critically acclaimed. Later, he also tried his hand as a lyricist and wrote the songs of Bride and Prejudice. In 2008, he directed the re-make of the cult movie Don, retaining the title of the film, which went on to become a success. He also made a short film titled Positive to spread the awareness of HIV-AIDS
COVER STORY
His Acting Debut Ensconced in his own world of writing and direction, Farhan never wanted to get into acting. Nevertheless, he took the plunge in 2008 when he made his debut as an actor and singer with the film Rock On directed by Abhishek Kapoor. While Farhan played the lead vocalist, the film also starred Arjun Rampal, Purab Kohli and Luke Kenny. Farhan wrote and sang five songs in the film. Since he was well versed with the guitar he also decided to use and play it in the film. It was revealed that Salman Khan’s father Salim Khan was so overwhelmed by Farhan’s acting debut that he gifted him his own Filmfare trophy. In 2009, when sister Zoya decided to make her directorial venture Luck By Chance, she couldn’t find a hero to fit the role. Zoya waited for seven years before Farhan solved her dilemma by deciding to act for her. Following Luck By Chance, he acted in a project titled The Fakir of Venice, which was initially scheduled to release before Rock On!!. The film was released in mid-2009. In 2011, Farhan played the lead in Zoya’s
I don’t like to tweet about my films on someone else’s social forum next film, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, for which he received a lot of appreciation. The film was produced by Farhan himself. He was also credited as its dialogue-writer. In the same year he directed a sequel to Don titled Don 2. The biggest high was his career however, came when he portrayed the role of Milkha Singh in Rakeysh Mehra’s biopic Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, which went on to make history at the box-office. Farhan underwent months of extensive training to gain an athlete’s body for his role in the film. His television debut and endorsements Farhan debuted as the host of the first season of dance reality show Nach Baliye
in 2005. He has also hosted a TV show on NDTV Imagine titled Oye! It’s Friday. He has endorsed a number of products like Unilever’s Water Purifier product called Pure-it and Titan. His philanthropic work Farhan launched Men Against Rape and Discrimination (MARD), a social campaign in August 2012, when his friend Pallavi Purkayastha, a lawyer by profession, was sexually assaulted and then killed by her home watchman. Farhan is still working for the cause and has also held live shows all over the country to spread awareness on the issues or rape and discrimination.

journey I have never planned my
in life
Vivian Dsena who plays the character of RK in Madhubala recently announced his decision to quit the serial taking his fans by surprise. Subhash K Jha caught up with the television star to find out the reasons behind his abrupt decision and impact the character had on his life. Your decision to quit Madhubala comes as a surprise considering the immense popularity of the character?
“Television reaches out to both the masses and the classes. You don’t have to buy a Rs 300 ticket to watch Madhubala”
It is rumoured that you are opting out of the serial because you are keen on pursuing a movie career. I’ve never planned my journey in life. In fact, I never wanted to be an actor. I aspired to be a footballer all along. Football continues to be my main passion. I’ve been part of the television industry since 2008. My first major serial Kkasam Se happened by chance. I love the medium. I need to have a really strong incentive to do something else. Besides, I think the medium of television is as important as cinema, and far more relatable to the public. Television reaches out to both the masses and the classes. You don’t have to buy a Rs 300 ticket to watch Madhubala. You can watch all the shows for the whole month in the same rate. The character of RK is also a bit eccentric. How much has it affected you? Yes, he doesn’t know what he is going to do next. It is a grey character and that’s what makes it interesting to the viewers. The show would be two years old in May this year. On an average it takes up 12 hours of my time every day yet I am unaffected by the character. I am still the same Vivian at home, roaming around in basketball shorts, T-shirts and chappals.
14 March 2014 | www.visionasia.com.au
To be honest, I am equally surprised by my decision but I had little choice in the matter. The plot was taking a generation leap and the makers were planning to introduce my daughter’s character in the storyline. Since I am in my 20s, I couldn’t fathom playing a father to a 25-year old. It would certainly look weird. Considering that you have been preoccupied with the soap for the last two years, don’t you feel there will be a vacuum in your life? I was contractually bound to do Madhubala so I didn’t consider any of the other numerous offers for all this time. I am sure the sense of emptiness will seep for some time. That’s one of the reasons why I am going off on a month-long vacation soon after I wrap up the remainder work for the show. I’ll think about my next move only after I return. How have you and your wife handled the attention you get for Madhubala? I am very clear about my priorities. The minute I enter my home I cease to be my character. I become Vivian Dsena. No matter how popular one may be outside the house, for the family you are always the same person minus all the stardom. I never let the success get to my head. Doesn’t the public attention get stifling at times? I do get a little irked when I am out with my family for a rare afternoon and fans approach me for a photograph. My wife Vahbbiz Dorabjee is also a popular television actress, so fans usually want to click us together. But all said and done, I consider it a gift of God. Few television actors get this kind of recognition. Has it been a tough journey for you? Success on television is not as easy as some people think. It takes a lot of hard work and sacrifice from both the actor and his family. Success has to be respected and enjoyed. It’s not the money that you make but the adulation that makes the struggle and sacrifice worth the while.
Have you made friends in this industry? Ram Kapoor, who worked with me in Kkasam Se, remains a mentor and friend to this day. He treats me like a son because I played his son in that serial. Television actors often complain about working unearthly hours. How would you define your experience? I’ve been through that grind so I know how it feels. Before Madhubala, I had acted in a serial that was shot during the day and the night. It was a serial based on vampires called Pyar Ki Yeh Ek Kahaani and I was the first vampire-hero on television. I had to work around the clock. I never got sleep except in the vanity van during breaks. How do you unwind after a hard day’s work? Cooking is my other passion, apart from football. After shooting I go home and cook. Otherwise television hardly gives me time to do anything else. I don’t like taking a day off every week. I prefer to take a 7- day holiday every 3-4 months when I can spend time with my family. I am an extremist. I like to stress myself out and then unwind. In fact my wife and I recently completed our first wedding anniversary and we went for a holiday.

Harman-Bipasha to tie the knot this year? It appears that wedding bells are around the corner for actress Bipasha Basu and her boy-friend, Harman Baweja. After Bipasha ushered in her 35th birthday with Harman last month at her Khar pad, there is news that the two will soon announce their official plans after the August release of Harman’s forthcoming film, Dhishkiyaon. In a recent interview, Harman admitted that he was dating Bipasha and spoke about how they both were emotional, caring and simple people. He also said that Bipasha was a simple, loving and honest girl and they both had common interests on several fronts. It may be recalled that Harman and Bipasha had even organized a formal meeting between their parents not so long ago at the Bawejas’ residence in Lokhandwala Complex. A source had later confirmed that the two were serious about each other and were keen on tying the knot this year.
Will Deepika and Ranveer team up for Shuddhi? With Hrithik Roshan and Kareena Kapoor opting out of Karan Johar’s mega venture Shuddhi, news is that Karan has now in talks with the hottest Bollywood pair of Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh for the film. Apparently, Karan decided that they would be the ideal pair for his film, after the success of Ram Leela, in which the two shared a remarkable chemistry. Karan also has a lot of faith in Deepika especially after her last film Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani. Meanwhile, Deepika too has shown a keen interest in the film. It may be recalled that Hrithik Roshan had allotted bulk dates for the prized project but he recently announced his official exit from the film. The actor was said to have made the decision following the accident on the sets of Bang Bang and his subsequent brain surgery. Following Hrithik’s decision, Kareena also decided to opt out of the film. www.visionasia.com.au | March 2014 15

The sheer beauty of the area has led to it being named by the New Seven Wonders Foundation as a genuine wonder of the world, ranking alongside better-known monuments such as the Taj Mahal and Great Wall of China. Petra is entered through a vast, canyon-like formation known as the Siq. At the end of this stretch lies Al Khazneh (the Treasury), a building whose towering façade may be familiar to certain visitors from films such as Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Although its relief carvings of human, animal and religious figures have regrettably worn away over the centuries, the intricate pillars and rooftops can still be appreciated by modern travellers. People exploring the city may be surprised to find that the building is considerably smaller on the inside than may be expected: with the buildings of Petra, most of the beauty is typically found on the outside. Although it is easy to get distracted by the bigger monuments, there are many smaller constructions in Petra that, in their own way, will be just as fascinating to a curious
visitor. Dotted around the city are numerous dwellings, giving a first-hand look at the places in which the ordinary people of the city lived.
Probably the most iconic building in Petra is El Deir (The Monastery). Dating from the second century A.D., this delicately-crafted building looms from the desert rock face - a genuinely imposing sight that still stands as a rare glimpse into the ancient world. Visiting the building today, it is tempting to sit back and imagine the sort of religious rites that would have occurred during the glory days of Petra. It is also well worth taking a look at the tremendous amphitheatre carved into the mountain en-Nejr. This location was expanded by Romans, after their civilisation annexed Petra - a reminder of just what a cultural melting pot this part of the ancient world was.
Due to its fragile nature, all motor vehicles are barred from entering the site. For a certain fee, however, you will be able to
traverse the area by animal: you will have a choice between a horse-drawn carriage, a donkey, or even a camel. However, be aware that these vendors expect – and demand- a high tip for their services. This is not the sort of area where you can pop into a convenience store, so make sure that you have plenty of bottled water at hand when you begin your journey through this ancient desert city. If you hope to find accommodation near Petra, then your best option will be the nearby town of Wadi Musa, which is home to a number of hotels and maintains a small tourist industry due to its proximity to the ancient site. If you are visiting Jordan from Australia or New Zealand then it would be a good idea to book a flight to the city of Aqaba. From there, you will be able to travel to Wadi Musa and subsequently to Petra. When choosing a time of year to visit, you are best advised to pick a month in spring or autumn as the extremes of hot and cold that can be found in Jordan during summer and winter may make your trip an uncomfortable experience. It is also recommended that you time your visit to Petra so that you can take advantage of the sunrise or sunset. During these times of day, the sun brings out the most beautiful red shades in the sandstone architecture. Truly a wondrous sight to behold! www.visionasia.com.au | March 2014 17

obsessed I have never been with stardom
Pakistani actor-singer Ali Zafar, who made his acting debut with Tere Bin Laden four years ago, has come a long way in his career. Ali is now looking forward to his next film, Total Siyappa, in which he plays the lead role. Vision Asia caught up with the versatile actor-singer to find out more on his equation with his Indian and Pakistani fans and his prowess as an actor.
It is a fact that both India and Pakistan have a huge misconception of each other. The strained relations between the two countries can change gradually by interaction and understanding 20 March 2014 | www.visionasia.com.au
From being a successful Pakistani singer to a successful Bollywood actor, how did the transition happen? Very few people know that I started my career as a model and then shifted to acting in Pakistan nine years back. It was only later that I switched to music since it was always my passion. I did get an offer to play the lead in a critically acclaimed Pakistani film, Khuda Ke Liye, but I couldn’t take it up at that time since it was clashing with my world tour. Apart from that, Pakistani films have never been great enough in terms of pursuing a career in acting. So when I got the opportunity to play the lead in Tere Bin Laden, I simply grabbed it. After that, there was no dearth of offers with films like London Paris New York, Mere Brother Ki Dulhan and Chashme Baddoor coming my way. The positive response I have got for my films so far has only encouraged me to move ahead. Your next release Total Siyappa is being eagerly anticipated at the box-office. Tell us something about your reasons for taking up the film? The film was initially titled as Aman Ki Aasha for obvious reasons. Let me tell you the film is not at all preachy. It is a clean, romantic comedy. As an artist, I feel that I too have a certain responsibility towards society. It is a fact that both India and Pakistan have
a huge misconception of each other. The strained relations between the two countries can change gradually by interaction and understanding. I have seen that love is always mightier than hatred. How was your working rapport with Yami Gautam? Yami was cast much later in the film and from the moment she came on board, it was a wonderful experience. Our pairing in the film has been unusual and people have said some nice things about it. Yami is a very talented girl and has a very long way to go. Unlike other actors, you do not seem to be hankering after superstardom. I have never been obsessed with stardom. When I made my acting debut, I started with an out-of-the-box film, Tere Bin Laden, despite the fact that I had two other offersa romantic comedy and a story of a singer. The other two stories were out and out commercial bets but I opted for the former because I like to take risks in my life. I am not the kind who likes to play safe. Even when I take up the role of a hero in a film, I like the character to be edgy and challenging. I have never gone on a signing spree either. I am a family person and I’d like to reserve some time for my son too. Apart from that, I want to do justice to my other interests too which include music, painting and my studio.

I am not too comfortable with the idea of judging reality shows You do a lot of multi-tasking as a singer, actor and director but what gives you the biggest high in life? For me the creative satisfaction comes in the form of music when I render my voice and pen the songs for my films. From my first film till date I have always contributed to the music of my films. That gives me a different kind of high. In Total Siyappa too, I have composed the tunes and written the lyrics. As a singer I need to practice every day. On the other hand, when I am composing, the artist in me doesn›t want to go to the gym so it is interesting and challenging at the same time. It’s a balancing act and I enjoy the process of multi-tasking. What next for Ali Zafar? After Total Siyappa, I am doing a film with Ranveer Singh, Parineeti Chopra and Govinda called Kill Dil. It is being directed by Shaad Ali. I am also producing a film in Pakistan for the first time in which I will be acting too. It is in the initial stages. Besides this, I am looking forward to doing more concerts as my fans want to see me on the stage. Please tell us something about your association with the reality show, Pakistan Idol? Pakistan Idol is being presented by two brands which I endorsed and they have hired me to do the promos for the idol theme. I got a very good response from it. I am not too comfortable with the idea of judging shows yet because I am still in the process of learning.
About Total Siyappa Directed by E. Nivas and written by Neeraj Pandey, Total Siyappa (Total Chaos) is the love story of a Pakistani guy (Ali) and an Indian girl, played by Yami Gautam. It is about a series of unfortunate events that befall a good-hearted but hapless Pakistani boy while visiting his girlfriend›s parents, leading to some funny, chaotic and outrageous situations. Veteran actor Anupam Kher and his real life wife and actress Kiron Kher are appearing together for the first time in this movie.

What are your views on actors endorsing a certain cause? Actors are the best people to promote a cause because people like to believe in celebrities. I believe that an actor or a celebrity should be more than an entertainer. If you only think of your six packs and box office success, then you are a very selfish person. There is nothing wrong in saying that I am not a social activist but I would definitely support an actor who is socially aware and would like to change something. I am very active on my social networking forum where I give information on my films and songs but I never get personal because then you can offend someone with your tweets. By Srabanti Chakravarthy

STRAIGHT TALK
My detractors wanted to
pull me down
Singer and rapper, Yo Yo Honey Singh, who appeared on the Indian music scene five years ago, is riding high after the recent success of Blue Eyes and his Bollywood compositions, ‘Lungi Dance’ from Chennai Express and ‘Party All Night’ from Boss. The popular Indie artist, revealed his success mantra and how he silenced his detractors, in a conversation with Subhash K Jha. 24 March 2014 | www.visionasia.com.au
STRAIGHT TALK
You are the only popular musician in India whose success is independent of Bollywood. Your comment. I wouldn’t say that Bollywood has not contributed to my popularity. The songs that I’ve composed for films have been instrumental in my success story too. However my one dream is to establish myself as a formidable figure on the independent music scene, a genre that doesn’t exist in India. My two big hits in 2013 ‘Party All Night’ and ‘Lungi Dance’ were from films but I slogged to make the video of my non-film song ‘Blue Eyes’ on my own. It has now generated over 2 crore views on the internet.
There are many other producers who want me star in their films but I am in no hurry
How do you explain your meteoric rise during the last one year? I would like to thank all the naysayers for making me sit up and revaluate my music. Until 2012, I was working at my own pace, enjoying myself as I composed and sang. However, there were people who began to feel threatened by my presence and started pelting stones at me. That’s when ugly controversies, allegations and court cases broke out. I decided to prove to my well-wishers that I was here to stay. So how did you take on the challenge? I realized that my detractors wanted to pull me down before I could ever make a mark. They got wind of my potential long before I did. I was underestimating myself all this time. Maine decide kiya, ab kisika baap bhi mujhe nahin rok sakta. When I came out of the court cases and abuse I was stronger. Do you mean to say that your superstardom was born out of defiance? That’s the absolute truth. A year ago Bollywood had no place for me. Now people are wondering about my success story. I am being sought after for songs in a great number of Bollywood films too and my detractors are also singing my praises. Isn’t it ironical? That’s life. Yehi duniya hai. That reminds me of the legendary filmmaker Guru Dutt who also went through a similar predicament and the song Yeh duniya agar mil bhi jaaye toh kya hai rendered by him in one of his films. I am enjoying my success for the moment. For a change, even the detractors are listening to my songs.
What’s next on the cards after ‘Blue Eyes’? I am looking to expand my musical horizons internationally. I’ve met up with some Arab musicians and we are planning something really different. 2013 was only my teasertrailer. My fans are yet to see the real picture. I want to take my detractors by surprise this year too. They’ll have to wait until August when I come out with my first solo album.
How do you manage to find time for so many concerts and performances, besides Bollywood songs? I don’t want to disappoint my fans, which is why I try to do full justice to all my commitments. For the past two months, I’ve been performing live in Mumbai, Kolkata, Delhi, New York, Chicago, Dubai, Pune and other places. Besides, a concert doesn’t end with a performance. It also entails attending the after-party and meeting VIPs and their relatives. By the time I finish a concert it’s 5 am. After which I catch an early flight to the next city. Don’t you looking forward to family time? Do you ever get lonely in the crowds? Lonely? I was waiting for these very moments all my life. It has taken me a lot of hard work to get to where I am today. As for family, I try to include them as far as possible in my hectic schedule. But it gets difficult at times. I was recently in Dubai for a family holiday but I ended up shooting a music video. Luckily those close to me aren’t demanding of my time. They understand that this is the best time for me to grow. In the last three months I’ve slept for just three full nights.
When did you find the time to do a whole album? I composed 80 songs last year when I was going through a phase of depression following all the Honey- contradictory reports bashing me in the media. I love the people who hated me and prompted me to get into action. I am planning to release my solo album in 25 countries. Just see what I do in the coming months. It is rumoured that you have also taken up acting. How has the experience been so far? I have gotten into acting just for fun. I am working with Ananth Mahadevan, a very senior director. I am doing an extended cameo in X-Posed. The film has been produced by Himesh Reshammiya. I enjoyed the shooting stint. It was after a long time that I was in the same city for more than three days. There are many other producers who want me star in their films but I am in no hurry. Even if I play the hero, the role would have to be an extension of my music.
A year ago Bollywood had no place for me. Now people are singing my praises. www.visionasia.com.au | March 2014 25

One reason why she quit acting in the 1970s was the kitschy mediocrity that overtook Bengali cinema in the 1970s and 80s
She decided to let go of
her stardom Moon Moon Sen recalls fond memories of her mother Suchitra Sen and why she will never be able to get over the loss of her mother.
“It’s hard to imagine that my mother is gone. She was my entire universe. Beautiful memories seem so painful at the moment. I think a mother is always special for everyone but my mother was also special for the whole of Bengal. She was very undemanding as a person. She was the closest to me but she knew that I had my life to lead and came to terms with that. As a child I remember she was always busy with work. I was put in boarding school in Darjeeling and then in England. I remember 26 March 2014 | www.visionasia.com.au
my father driving me to the Taj hotel from the airport in Mumbai when she was in the city shooting for Aandhi. It was always a joy and privilege for me to come back home for holidays thrice a year and spend time with her. When I would leave to go back to boarding school, she’d cry more than I did. Even when I was studying in Kolkata, she would ring up twice a day to find out about me. It was after I finished my school and joined college that I started living with her in
Kolkata. My mother not only dealt with the film industry on her own terms but also looked after the home and me. She was both father and mother to me. We slept in the same room, ate together and did everything together. I remember she’d sit in the adjoining room after coming back from her shooting, relaxing and sipping tea as she watched me while I was studying. I knew she was always there for me...I can feel her presence now too. We were very very close.”
IN REMEMBRANCE
It’s a myth that my mother didn’t meet people. She liked being alone but it’s not that she didn’t like meeting people. She was extremely polite and easy-going in her social interaction. Of course she had a fierce temper which my daughters and I have inherited. She was very choosy about her friends and a stickler for punctuality. If anything didn’t go well while shooting my mother would be extremely upset and would make no effort to hide it. One reason why she quit acting in the 1970s was the kitschy mediocrity that overtook Bengali cinema in the 1970s and 80s. Many of the directors and actors she felt comfortable working with passed away. When Uttam Kumar passed away, she said, ‘Whom am I going to work with now?’ She was also there to help quietly when her staff needed her. She looked after her make-up man’s schooling. She looked after her entire staff, visited their homes when they were indisposed. She did not boast of her charitable work. She was a very generous soul but she never allowed outsiders to come close to her. Once she left acting she completely cut off all her links with the entertainment industry. When I started acting, she would hardly inquire about the film industry except maybe an odd question about how GulzarSaab was doing. She was extremely fond of him. Otherwise she was totally cut off from both Bengali and Hindi cinema. She decided to let go of her stardom quite easily but stardom never let go of her. An eminent producer D Rama Naidu once told me that he had a blank cheque waiting for my mother if she decided to work with him. Few are aware that my mother had refused Yash Chopra’s classic film, Deewaar at the peak of her career. It was only after she opted out they changed the whole script. “ One thing my mother always taught me
was to hold my head high irrespective of how others perceived me. She never put any restriction on the way I dressed up or behaved. When I joined the Hindi film industry many people smirked about Suchitra Sen’s daughter wearing a bathing costume but my mother never objected to it. I’d move around the house wearing sun-suits. When I grew older I wore mini-skirts. Not once did she comment on my clothes. After a point, I stopped working in Mumbai and moved back to Kolkata because I wanted to be with my mother. I felt she was lonely without me. Now I am without her...For her final journey I dressed her up so beautifully. I made sure her face was covered from public view. What a pity that was! Because she was so beautiful right till she breathed her last.

Her screen presence was
unmatchable
The legendary Suchitra Sen is no more but her grand-daughter Raima is confused about her feelings of grief and guilt. “Why am I feeling so empty and guilty? I think I should’ve spent more time with my grand mom. My mother, sister and I, were the only family she had and it’s a terrible loss for us.” Raima is more concerned about how her mother Moon Moon Sen will cope up with her the loss of her grandmother, “I really don’t know what my mother will do without my grandmother. They were each other’s universe. They understood one another completely despite the fact that they were completely different. It was a very difficult situation for my grandmother when my mother got married, moved out of her home and had her own family,” Raima reveals.
Actress Raima Sen laments the recent passing away of her grandmother, Suchitra Sen and recounts the moments she spent with the legendary actress in a conversation with Subhash K Jha.
off that my grand mom got from her fans, this despite the fact that she hadn’t been seen on screen for 40 years. They loved her madly even when they hadn’t seen her for decades. When she was being taken I could see people coming out on the road with their hands folded praying for her. This was not a normal farewell.” The actress reveals that she knew little about the legendary aura surrounding her grandmother during her childhood days, “When my sister Riya and I were kids grandma had already given up films and public life. So we only knew her as our grandmother and not as this iconic star until the time we became actresses ourselves. It was only then that we realized what a huge reputation our grandmother had.”
Raima had been stationed in Kolkata attending to the ailing Suchitra Sen for more than a month. “None of us thought that she would pass away. It was so unexpected. It was only when I saw the stream of visitors pouring in at her funeral that I learnt how important she was for the people of Bengal. The enormity of the loss is yet to sink in.”
About Suchitra Sen’s mythic seclusion Raima reminisces, “She took a decision to stay out of public view and she stuck to it. It’s easy to withdraw from the limelight but it is difficult to resist coming back to it. My grandmother was an exception. Once she made up her mind she stayed away. She left everything and everyone behind.”
Raima was amazed by the turn-out at Suchitra Sen’s cremation. “Not even the biggest stars would get the kind of send-

the industry everyone would look at me in that funny way as if they were not seeing me but someone else. When I did my first film Godmother, I was asked to look into the camera in a certain way. It took me a while to realize that they were seeing my grandmother in me. They just loved me because I looked like her. It took me a long time to get out of her shadow. It was only after Ritu-da’s Chokher Bali (director Rituparno Ghosh) the comparisons stopped.” Suchitra Sen hardly watched films, not even Raima’s. “But she did watch me in Annirudh Roy Chowdhary’s Anuranan. She had never watched any film of mine before that. After Anuranan she wanted to see more of my films. She also liked me in Ritu-da’s Nauka Dubi. As for me I think she was awesome in all her films specially Saat Pake Bandha, Uttar Phalguni, Mamta, Aandhi and Dweep Jwale Jaye. Her screen presence was unmatchable, at least in Bengali cinema.” Says Raima, “Ritu-da wanted to make a film on my grandmother’s life with me in the lead. He was the only director I would have trusted to make a film on my grandmother. Now, no chance! Two people who were very close to my heart are gone within a year.”

Anushka clears the air about her lip job While she has been lately making headlines for her relationship with cricketer Virat Kohli, Anushka Sharma was a tad upset when she came across media reports about how her lip surgery had gone all wrong. The reports apparently surfaced after Anushka appeared in an episode of Koffee With Karan, in which she did not look her usual self. The actress then took to a social networking site to clarify the rumours and revealed that she “had not gone under the knife or done any kind of plastic surgery.” In the statement, Anushka added, “I have been using a temporary lip-enhancing tool and that along with make-up techniques is the reason why there might be a change in the appearance of my lips.” She further went on to say that she did not believe in endorsing any form of permanent enhancement and the change was to suit her character in her upcoming film Bombay Velvet, where she plays a jazz musician of the ’60s and ’70s.
Vidya Balan is not averse to doing intimate scenes after marriage There has been a lot of contemplation whether Vidya Balan will be open to doing intimate scenes with her co-stars post marriage to Siddharth Kapoor. However, the actress recently revealed that her husband respects her career and has no qualms about it. The actress, who is eagerly looking forward to the release of her forthcoming film, Shaadi Ke Side Effects, also added that she would make it a point to take her partner into confidence if such a role came along. The actress also denied that she was pregnant and said that the decision would have to wait for some time. She later said that she had finally settled in marriage. “I would often wonder when my parents would tell me that I would get settled after marriage. I never understood that. Now that I am married to Siddharth, I have understood the meaning of “settled”. I don’t have to worry about tomorrow,” she added. www.visionasia.com.au | March 2014 29

FASHION
Her definition of fashion: Fashion for me is wearing your attitude on your sleeve. It is also about expressing your personality to the very best. Her favourite party-wear: For occasions and parties I usually wear outfits according to the place and occasion. I always have an LBD, which comes in handy at the last minute. I love trying out colors like purple, yellow and red. I love to experiment with colours. When it comes to Indian clothes I experiment with sarees or wear the simple Anarkali Kurta with a churidaar. I also like the traditional Sharara.
I believe that even a simple and elegant wrist watch can say a lot about you
From the cute girl next door on the television scene to a glamourous film diva, Prachi Desai has come a long way in her career. Her career graph has been steadily on the rise from her debut film, Rock On to her last release, Police Giri. Today she is also a showstopper for many designer brands. She discusses her fashion mantra.
Her favorite style icons: I adore Audrey Hepburn. She is simple, classy and very under-rated. I also like Megan Fox who is effortless with her style. I wish I could be like her. Accessories and what they mean to her: I am strictly against the idea of over accessorizing. It is very important to define your accessories and choose only those that compliment your clothes and the occasion. I believe that even a simple and elegant wrist watch can say a lot about you. I would advise youngsters to save and buy only the best accessories instead of going for the frivolous ones. Her favourite accessory: I love tiny handcrafted watches. Accessories have to be coded for day and night. Wherever I go for my shoots, the first thing I pick up is a good watch, no matter how expensive it is. My favorite is the DKNY watches with gold and diamonds. I also like investing in handcrafted jewellery like diamond studs, bracelets and anklets. I had a fascination for them during my growing years. Her favourite shopping destinations: London and Hong Kong are my two favorite destinations but I also love to shop in Dubai. I never plan my shopping. I pick up shoes and clothes randomly only if I find them attractive. Sometimes I end up buying hiend street stuff too. I am not into brands too much. Her favorite Indian and international designers and brands: I adore the creations of Falguni and Shane Peacock among the Indian designers. Their outfits are elegantly designed and also economical. I also love the royal flowing outfits of Gauri and Nainika. I am also
fond of Zara’s sling bags. For international wear I like Gucci, Envy Me, Burberry and Elizabeth Arden. I also love their shoes, bags and perfumes. Her favourite skin and hair care brands: I have adhered to the Neutrogena brand for my skin. I would recommend that everyone use this brand. It is very good. As for my hair, I massage my head with coconut oil twice a week. I also take a lot of protein treatments as I am a vegetarian. Besides I rinse my hair with vinegar and lemon juice every time I wash my hair. Her favourite perfumes: Among my favourites are Flower, DKNY’s Delicious, Escada, Chanel, and Envy by Gucci. At times, I even pick up labels like Cinderella, Snow White Jasmine, et al.

NUMEROSCOPE
Star birthdays and the year ahead Ace astro-numerologist Bhavikk Sangghvi predicts what the future holds in store for actors Emraan Hashmi and Shraddha Kapoor on the eve of their 35th birthday and 26th birthdays.
Emraan Hashmi Emraan’s numbers and his personality Emraan was born on 24th March 1979 which makes him a number 6 (Venus) person in numerology. Like all Arians, he is also ruled by number 9 (Mars) while his destiny number adds up to Number 8 (Saturn). Emraan’s magnetic personality and his tremendous sexappeal have everything to do with the Number 6. The Mars effect ensures that he is focused on his career and equally dedicated towards his craft. However, the impact of Saturn on his life will not give him things easily in life but this man is ready for the struggle, which explains his success story. What the stars predict this year This year Emraan will enter the 36th year of his life which indicates both highs and lows in his career ahead. His next set of releases be it Ungli, Shaatir or Hamari Adhuri Kahaani may not be able to do brisk business at the box office though his work will be well appreciated. But it will be his Hollywood debut in director Danis Tanovic’s White Lies that will catapult him into the international league. Remedies to beat the blues Wearing a blue sapphire on his middle finger on a Saturday will help Emraan take that giant leap as an actor and reach the desired heights of success. 34 March 2014 | www.visionasia.com.au
Shraddha Kapoor Her numbers and the importance of planet Jupiter Shraddha was born on 3rd March 1989 which makes her a number 3 (Jupiter) person in numerology. Like all Pisceans, she is once again ruled by the number 3 while her destiny number adds up to Number 6 (Venus). What the stars predict this year Shraddha will now be entering in her 26th year which may not prove to be as rewarding for her as the previous year. Her next two projects The Villain (with Sidharth Malhotra and Riteish Deshmukh) and Haider (with Shahid Kapoor) may fail to set the cash registers ringing at the box office although her performance will be well received. On the flip side she will face some health issues related to the digestive system. Love will also not feature prominently for Shraddha in her coming year. Remedies to beat the blues Wearing a yellow sapphire to be set in gold on her right-hand index finger on a Thursday (one hour before sunset) will help her choose her next projects wisely and ensure that she does not make any bad financial investments in the future.

Will Rekha make a comeback with ‘Fitoor’? Who wouldn’t love to work with a diva like Rekha? But these days the actress is known to turn down most of the scripts offered to her. The charismatic legendary actress is said to have finally given her nod for director Abhishek Kapoor’s Fitoor which is an adaptation of Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations. The film also stars Katrina Kaif and Aditya Roy Kapur in the lead roles. Mithun Chakraborty to make his
political debut Once known as the disco king of the 80s, Mithun Chakraborty is all set to enter politics with West Bengal Chief Minister, Mamta Banerjee, nominating him for the Rajya Sabha. In a conversation with Subhash K Jha, the veteran actordancer and judge of a television reality show, talks about his new role and his plans ahead.

NEWS EXPRESS
Just as I’ve balanced many of my obligations in the past I’ll add Rajya Sabha to my many duties.
Mithun Chakraborty is a busy man these days. While he is dividing time between his film and television assignments, the actor has got a new responsibility on hand with West Bengal Chief Minister, Mamta Banerjee nominating him for the Rajya Sabha. Like his acting assignments, the veteran actor is determined to do full justice to this new role in his life, “A Rajya Sabha nomination should not be treated as ornamental. I’m being given the job of looking after the welfare of people. In any case I don’t take on any responsibility half-heartedly. I either do it with full sincerity, or don’t take it up at all.” However Mithun maintains that he has no political ambitions and the Rajya Sabha should not be perceived as his formal entry into politics, “I hardly have the traits of a politician. I am taking up this new responsibility more for the sake of Didi (Mamta Bannerjee) than myself.” Few are aware that Mithun had been offered a Rajya Sabha by Mamta Banerjee ten years ago but he was not very eager to take up the responsibility then, “At that time I had to say no to her because it just didn’t seem the right time to take up such a big responsibility. Out of 365 days I was working for 465 says (laughs).” When he was approached again for the second time, a skeptical Mithun asked Mamta Banerjee to reconsider the decision and judge for herself whether he was indeed capable of handling the responsibility. “She told me to fill the Rajya Sabha papers while she thought it over.” It was when he had gone to Kolkatta after Suchitra Sen’s death that Mithun learnt that he had already been chosen for the Rajya Sabha, “I was waiting at the Kolkata airport for my flight back when my daughter called to say that Didi had already announced my nomination on Facebook.” Needless to add, Mithun was delighted.
Even as he is gearing up for his new responsibility, Mithun is also trying to do justice to the various projects he has signed as an actor. Among them are Subhash Ghai’s Kanchi, the Akshay Kumar starrer It’s Entertainment, Sajid Nadiadwala’s Kick and another film titled Bombay Fairytale, besides a couple of Bengali films. “Actually it seems like a crowd of films because some projects have been delayed,” he informs. Mithun clarifies that he has no intentions to call off his innings in the entertainment industry, “I’ll never quit being an actor. As long as I get good roles I’ll continue to do them. I will now represent my fans on two accounts, one as an actor and the second as Mithun Chakraborty- the man who has been given this responsibility by Didi.” He has no plans to cut down on his television appearances either. “I remain committed to that. My fans want to see me on television. I can’t let them down. Just as I’ve balanced many of my obligations in the past I’ll add Rajya Sabha to my many duties.” Mithun adds that he is no stranger when it comes to endorsing social causes. “For the last twenty years I’ve been the chairperson of the Mazdoor Union. I am also the president of the Artistes Union. In Bengal I’m the vice-chairman of the artistes’ forum. I have always fought for the down-trodden and the under-privileged and I’ll continue to do so.” The actor also has a charitable trust which has taken up the responsibility of educating several students, especially girls. “I fund the trust from my paid public appearances. Whether it is cutting ribbons or appearing as a chief guest, I do these things so that my trust can carry on with its endeavour.”
make sure that the funds from the Rajya Sabha are put to optimum use. I will speak to Didi about this. Just as the characters I play have to justify my presence, I want to make sure my role in the Rajya Sabha is not a let-down.”
Mithun has decided that he will use his new responsibility as a Rajya Sabha member, for furthering his social cause. “I want to www.visionasia.com.au | March 2014 37

Cell-phones air flights on
Bollywood Reacts
When the Federal Communications Commission recently mooted a proposal to lift the 22 year old ban on cell phones during flights, the Indian Government’s DoT (Department of Telecommunications) also began to explore the possibility of doing the same. Subhash K Jha caught up with some Bollywood celebrities to find out whether they would welcome such legislation and how far they preferred using cell-phones on flights.
I think phones on planes are a terrible idea! The aircraft was the last frontier where one would disconnect from everything. So far, phones on planes have been strictly used for emergency situations. This is technical dependency at its worst!
Lilette Dubey (Stage and Film Actress) . I would have to look at the option of surrendering my phone if that happens.
Amole Gupte (Director-Actor)
I just hope it’s not beyond messaging if it indeed happens. The very idea of spending several hours on a flight with people chatting and phones ringing is a nightmare.
Onir (Filmmaker)
Oh no! It’s the only time I get undisturbed. Now everyone will be calling! Where do I hide?
Shekhar Kapoor (Director and Actor)
Personally I think they should continue with the ban on cell-phones on flights. It’s one of those rare occasions when one has the chance to switch off the damned thing.
Rensil d’Silva (Writer-Director and Ad Filmmaker)

OPINION
The only time we truly spend with ourselves is on the flight as we are without cell-phones. I’d prefer no phones on flight. The use of mobile phones inside the aircraft would convert it into a fish market. All the in-house announcements would become redundant too. Passengers would be better off without the constant cacophony of phones and needless banter.
Ayushman Khurrana (Actor) That would be disastrous. The only place the ubiquitous cell-phone is not attached to us at the hip and lip is on flight. Personally for me, it will impinge on the space needed to introspect and analyse. I don’t think it will affect anyone’s life except that flights will get a lot noisier.”
Shabana Azmi (Actress, Social and Political Activist)
Richa Chaddha (Actress)
I think that would make our lives a little more convenient. We can stay connected with family during long flights.
Ram Kapoor (Television Star)
People especially Indians tend to talk very loudly into their cell-phones. Given the enclosed spaces in planes, it will be a nightmare. I generally look forward to catching up on my sleep on planes. I guess that would change. For starters it would mean very noisy flights though I must say connectivity would get a new definition.
Pooja Bedi (Former Actress and Socialite)
Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra (Filmmaker) I find it too risky. Why risk our lives and why have cell-phones on while midair?”
Shiamak Davar (Choreographer)
It will be very annoying, no peace of mind as everyone would be on the phone.

I want to be
an actor till the day I die She is better known as a fashionista but there’s more to Sonam Kapoor than meets the eye. Despite hailing from a family that has dominated the Hindi film industry, Sonam is determined to make a place for herself on her own merits. The success of her last two films has only strengthened her resolve. In a candid interview with Subhash K Jha, the vivacious actress talks about her career plans, her family and the kind of roles she connects with.

With Raanjhanaa and Bhaag Milkha Bhaag you seem to have come into your own. How does it feel when your name figures in the awards lists? It’s nice to be nominated for popular awards but honestly I have never been obsessed with prizes and awards since childhood. To me everybody is a winner. I feel happy to be recognized, but I don’t think it’s nice to compare students in a class or actors doing different roles. At the end of the day each one of us deserves an award for working hard and giving the best of ourselves. In my perception all of us are winners.
Do you feel that you are being taken more seriously as an actor now? If I cared so much about people’s opinions I wouldn’t have signed Bhaag Milkha Bhaag and Raanjhanaa, or my new films Khubsoorat and Dolly Ki Doli. Beyond a point you cannot run your life on the basis of what people think about you. All you need to do is to respect the opinion of those who genuinely care about you. If my father gives me career advice I listen to him. Why bother about the opinion of those who don’t give a damn whether you’re dead or alive?
INTERVIEW
joy of Hrishida’s films, is Raju Hirani. In this day and age, we do need the feel good middle-of-the-road films that I grew up with like Guddi, Mili and Anand. Even my next film Dolly Ki Doli is in the same space. How do you go about choosing your characters? I enjoy playing meaty roles rather than being the hero’s eye-candy. I guess Raanjhanaa has spoilt me. I’d rather do just two films every year that give me ample space, instead of taking up inconsequential roles. I want to work with actors who enrich my life like Rishi Kapoor and Ayushmann Khurrana in Bewakoofiyan. This one is again a slice-oflife film about middle-class characters with real situations. I am in no hurry to do every film that comes way. It’s not the hero or the banner that interests me. I am not one of those actresses who are eager to quickly complete films and then get married.
Are you wary of unwanted opinions? It’s funny but when you come from a certain background, people tend to under-estimate you. In Hindi cinema, if you don’t wear cotton sarees in every scene, it is construed that you haven’t given a good performance. Actually it’s the way the world works. Luckily me for me there are filmmakers like Rakeysh Mehra and Aanand Rai who go beyond my looks and believe in my talent. There is this belief in the cinema industry and the world over that goodlooking people cannot act? Well, if that was true we’d never have had actresses like Waheeda Rehman making a success of their careers. Madhubala wasn’t taken seriously for the longest time because of her incandescent looks. She was amazing at comedy which is a very difficult genre to do for a female actor. The fabulous Lucille Ball was never taken seriously because she did comic roles. Even Marilyn Monroe for that matter was a great actress and a great comedian but she was not taken seriously because of her good looks. So is the role of a fashionista just a role you are playing? It’s the way I am. I have always been very comfortable in my space. I am equally at home discussing and films and fashion. Who are your friends in the industry? One of my very good friends is Jacqueline Fernandez. Jacky is a very positive person and I love her company. I met her through Asin who is another friend. I am also close to Bebo (Kareena Kapoor). I’ve known her all my life. She is very confident and not insecure about anyone. Another very good friend of mine is Imran Khan. Then there is Rakeysh Mehra and Aanand Rai.
Khoobsoorat is your take on Rekha in Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s film. How has the experience been so far? I’ve worked really hard on the character in Khoobsurat. Rekha-ji has always been iconic and she was always at the back of my mind when I signed the film. But we’ve only retained the essence and spirit of the original. It’s still a film about someone who comes into a home and makes everyone happy. How well did you connect to the exuberant character in the film? I think it was the girl’s personality that prompted me to play the character. Hrishida’s films exuded a positivity that is lacking in today’s films. There was innocence about his cinema that we hope to recapture. In our cinema today, we either have films that are hardcore commercial or dark and experimental. I think the only director we have today who captures the innocence and
Would you be giving career advice to your brother? My father didn’t advise me and I wouldn’t like to do that to my brothers, Harshvardhan and Arjun Kapoor either. I believe that one’s own instincts, experiences and journey are what take one forward in life. What is amazing about our family is that we all want to do our own thing, forge our own paths. Our family has been a part of cinema for three generations and we all love cinema. Arjun, Harsh and I started our careers on our own without our family producing a film for us. I auditioned repeatedly for Sanjay Bhansali’s Saawariya. The same goes for Arjun. He had to go through the grind before he got Ishaqzaade. Any burning ambitions? I want to be an actor till the day I die. That’s all I want to do. Maybe I’ll direct a film someday. I’d like to work with Aamir Khan too, so I can learn something from him.
I am not one of those actresses who are eager to quickly complete films and then get married. www.visionasia.com.au | March 2014 41
PREVIEW
Vision Asia previews films to watch out for in the months ahead.
GULAAB GANG Produced by Anubhav Sinha, Gulaab Gang will see the two reigning divas of the 90s, Madhuri Dixit and Juhi Chawla, coming together for the first time on screen. The film tells the story of a group of Indian women operating in Bundelkhand and Madhya Pradesh, who put up a tough fight against social injustice. The title of the film is derived from the fact that the women, who launched a struggle against the atrocities, wore pink as part of their protests. While Madhuri Dixit will play the protagonist in the film, Juhi Chawla will be seen playing a negative role for the first time on screen. The film also has an energetic and foot-tapping number picturised on Madhuri Dixit choreographed by Saroj Khan, who gave some of the best songs in Madhuri’s career. The film will also see the two leading women, Madhuri and Juhi Chawla, performing some dare-devil stunts. Action director, Kanishka Sharma, who has choreographed Madhuri’s stunts in the film, revealed that the actress underwent rigorous training for some of the action scenes in the film. Directed by debutant Soumik Sen, the film also stars Mahie Gill, Shilpa Shukla and Tannishtha Chatterjee. Gulaab Gang is scheduled for release on International Women’s Day. The producer of the film believes that it will be the perfect day to release the film considering that the film is a tribute to all the women in the country.
MAIN TERA HERO Produced by Ekta Kapoor’s Balaji Motion Pictures, Main Tera Hero is a romantic comedy starring Varun Dhawan, Ileana D’cruz and Nargis Fakhri in the lead roles. The film will see the coming together of Varun Dhawan and his father, director David Dhawan, who has delivered some of the biggest comedies in the past with superstars like Sanjay Dutt, Rishi Kapoor, Salman Khan, Govinda and Akshay Kumar. The film, the Hindi remake of the Telugu blockbuster Kandireega, is a love-triangle revolving around a college prankster Sreenath Prasad (played by Varun Dhawan). Reports suggest that the film will showcase Varun Dhawan at his rugged best, apart from the fact that it will also reflect David Dhawan’s trade-mark style of comedy with lavish sets, witty dialogues and a feel good factor. The Student Of The Year actor will be seen graduating to a full-fledged hero with this film. The film has already generated considerable curiosity among the youth, with its trailer getting over two million views on YouTube. 42 March 2014 | www.visionasia.com.au

Will Salman Khan be the next IPL owner in Bollywood? It appears that Salman Khan is finally planning to own a stake in the Indian Premier League. Four years ago, the superstar had reportedly approached IPL boss, Lalit Modi and expressed a keen desire to be an owner of an IPL team. However Salman was said to be in two minds at that time and had dropped the idea soon after. More recently, the 48year old actor is said to have evinced a keen interest in becoming an IPL owner, when he met industrialist Ness Wadia, who co-owns the IPL team, Kings XI Punjab. Salman apparently chose to discuss the issue when he was invited as the chief guest at ‘The Little Hearts Marathon’ organized by B J Wadia Hospital for under-privileged children. Though there is no clear indication that Salman will indeed pick up a stake in an IPL team, reports suggest that the actor has been making enquiries with Ness and his other friends in the sport. According to sources, Salman, who is an ardent cricket fan, has also been trying to find out about the practicalities of acquiring a stake in IPL. If he goes ahead with his decision, Salman will be following in the footsteps of Shah Rukh Khan, Juhi Chawla, Preity Zinta and Shilpa Shetty, who are successful IPL team owners in their own right.
Madhuri Dixit in action mode She believes that age is just a number and talent only gets better with age. The Dhak Dhak girl, Madhuri Dixit, also does not believe in the myth that married actresses do not make great heroines on screen. If anything, Madhuri is only getting better with age. For her forthcoming film, Gulaab Gang, the 46-year old actress has performed some breathtaking and challenging stunts that few heroines have attempted earlier. According to reports, Madhuri had earlier attended Taekwondo classes in Denver, USA, where her kids were also training in the martial arts practice. So when she was asked to perform some heavy duty sequences in Gulaab Gang, her training came in handy. She also learnt hand-to hand combat for her role in the film. Her trainer, Kanishka Sharma, who has choreographed Madhuri’s stunts in Gulaab Gang, admits that he was taken aback by the actress’ agility and her great sense of timing. Sharma trained the actress in rare martial art forms like Shaolin Kungfu, Pekiti Tirsia Kali and Shaolin Chin-na, for the film. “She makes my otherwise tiring action look effortless on screen,” he recently revealed. www.visionasia.com.au | March 2014 43

Fame has brought in my life His latest release, Gunday, hasn’t got an overwhelming response at the box-office but Ranveer Singh is not complaining. The accolades he got for his last release, Ram Leela, are still fresh in the minds of the audiences. While he continues to be on the wish-list of producers, Ranveer’s personal life is happening too. In a candid interview, the actor talks about his career, his reputation of being brash and why he shies away from fame.

I am a fun loving guy and say a lot of things in zest but sometimes these very words put me into trouble
It’s been a year of awards and rewards for Ranveer Singh with his last two films Lootere and Ram Leela doing well at the box-office and his latest release, Gunday opening to an above average response. The actor admits that post the enormous success of his last release Ram Leela, life has changed for him. “To be honest, fame has brought chaos into my life. That’s the reason, I spend a couple of hours with myself every night to sit down and analyse. That time is very precious for me.” Ranveer recalls the moments when he was flooded with calls from people in the industry, after Ram Leela broke records at the box-office. “It was an altogether different high. I began to understand the economics of the box office and I was lost. Thankfully, a friend came to my rescue and advised me to concentrate on my scripts, instead of getting trapped in box-office figures. I returned back to reading scripts. I told people who manage my work to handle all the publicity and leave me to concentrate on my projects.” The exuberant actor admits that he had a tough time coping with all the attention, “Success is indeed heady and it can ruin you. The perceptions of the trade suddenly changed towards me. I noticed that there was a drastic change in my life, this despite the fact that I was living in the same house with my parents.” Ranveer is glad that he has gotten over it and has learnt to focus on his career. “I am more comfortable keeping things as simple as possible. I read my scripts, go to shoots and promote my films. That’s all there is to it,” says Ranveer.
The actor says that he has never been obsessed with fame and stardom. “When I was in Kishore Namit Kapoor’s acting classes, nine out of ten students pursued acting as a means to fame. For me, the end was acting, my prerogative was to make them laugh and cry. I feel that fame is just a by-product. It comes along with what I am doing.” Ranveer has also been compared to the young Amitabh Bachchan for his hi-voltage performances, be it in his debut venture Band Bajaa Baraat, Ladies Vs Ricky Bahl, Lootera, Ram Leela or his latest release, Gunday. How does he feel about it? “I have heard about this too. In fact an assistant in Yash Raj also told me that I reminded him of the younger Amitabh Bachchan. It is a huge compliment to be compared to someone of the stature of Amitabh Bachchan. I am an ardent Bachchan fan. I come from a family which was never connected to films and Mr. Bachchan is one of the reasons why I chose to become an actor.” Ranveer is still ecstatic about the moment when Amitabh Bachchan sent a hand written note to Ranveer after watching Ram Leela. “When Amit-ji sent that letter my mother received it and presented it to me. I was emotional seeing the pride in my parent’s eyes. It was greater than any other awards. He is the ultimate icon of the country. More recently, after the release of Gunday, Subhash Ghai also sent me a framed picture of Ram Lakhan and said that he was reminded of the energy of Ram and Lakhan when he watched me and Arjun in the film. I only hope I keep going ahead in my career with the same energy.”
Currently, Ranveer is trying to ensure that he does not get trapped in any image and attempt a variety of roles as far as possible. “I get excited when I am expected to try out versatile characters on screen. I want to prove that I can do equal justice to the character of Varun in Lootera and Ram in Ram Leela. I am glad that directors Ali Abbas and Vikramaditya are confident that I can carry the characters in Gunday and Lootere, with the same ease.” Ranveer will be working next with Govinda in his upcoming film, Kill Dil and he considers it a huge opportunity to be working with an actor of Govinda’s stature. “I have no words to describe Govinda. When I was a kid I watched his films. I have watched Raja Babu 64 times and have been inspired by

Govinda in real life too. There was a time in my school days when I would dance to his song Meri pant bhi sexy by wearing an orange pant, a silver shirt and yellow shoes. Most of his contemporaries are ruling the roost but no one has talent like Govinda. His comedy is different too. For me he is an outstanding talent. I share a special bond with him and he treats me like his son. Govinda will be the game- changer in Kill Dil.” While his professional life is doing very well, Ranveer has often come under attack for his loud and brash behaviour. The actor admits that his over-the-top attitude often puts him in trouble. “I am a fun loving guy and say a lot of things in zest but sometimes these very words put me into trouble. Now people have begun to understand that I don’t always mean what I say,” smiles the actor. But isn’t it time he checked his impetuous and rash behavior? “That’s the way I am and I cannot change it. Even as a child I was always restless and impulsive. Whether it was in school, class, college or on a sports day, I have always been over-enthusiastic in life. Judgments will be passed either way. May be my off screen persona was a bit too much for people to handle in the beginning but now they are gradually warming up to me.” Ranveer adds that his hyper-sensitive behavior also has a lot do with the fact that he is a Cancerian. “I am a typical funloving Cancerian. I get attracted easily, at the same time I am emotional and hyper sensitive. I love to keep the atmosphere light every time. I don’t like being serious because then I tend to get too serious.” According to Ranveer, it was this serious aspect of his personality that helped him 48 March 2014 | www.visionasia.com.au
to do justice to a film like Lootera. “If I did not have that serious side to me I would not have been able to pull off a film like Lootera,” he admits. While on his serious side, you quiz Ranveer whether he is serious about his relationships with his co-stars Anushka and his latest heart-throb Deepika, “Anushka has been my first heroine and taught me a lot of things. Anushka is someone whom I respect and admire. I am close to her and we will work together whenever the opportunity arises. The wonders of
Turmeric
I love turmeric – it’s my favourite superstar spice in cooking and for its medicinal qualities! Recent research has revealed that turmeric is a natural wonder, proving beneficial in the treatment of many different health conditions from cancer to Alzheimer’s. Fresh root of turmeric, which looks like a skinny version of ginger, has a peppery, warm and bitter flavour and a mild fragrance slightly reminiscent of orange and ginger. Turmeric is known to heal the “whole person”. It is a powerful medicine that has long been used in the Chinese and Indian systems of medicine as an anti-inflammatory agent to treat a wide variety of conditions. In India alone, turmeric has been in use for over 2,500 years! Scientists tell us that vegetables such as cauliflower, cabbage, broccoli, brussel sprouts, kale, kohlrabi and turnips and Curcumin – the major constituent of turmeric that gives the spice its yellow colour – could be an effective therapy not only to prevent
prostate cancer, but to inhibit the spread of established prostate cancers. Best of all, my wonderful combination of Cauliflower Spiced with Turmeric is absolutely delicious!! What I particularly like about turmeric is that its healing properties work both internally and externally. When applied externally it can treat everything from acne to bruises, psoriasis, rashes and wounds. Turmeric is also well known for its use as a skin tonic – you just have to be careful not to apply too much to avoid staining your skin yellow. Numerous studies have proven turmeric also helps in repairing intestinal walls and combating inflammation for gluten allergies – my next article will help further with gluten-free foods. Good luck in your cooking and experimenting with this wonderful spice – I’m sure you’ll love it and I’d be delighted to hear from you what uses you have for turmeric in your own cooking.
