PREVIEW
Vision Asia previews films to watch out for in the months ahead.
HUMSHAKALS Director Sajid Khan, who last delivered the highly forgettable Himmatwala, is set to tickle the funny bone of the audiences with his next comic caper, Humshakals. This Fox Star Studios and Pooja Entertainment’s film produced by Vashu Bhagnani will have its three heroes Saif Ali Khan, Riteish Deshmukh and Ram Kapoor in three different avatars supported by Bollywood hotties, Tamannaah, Esha Gupta and Bipasha Basu. The film has been shot extensively in Mauritius and London. The film also has a lavishly shot number which features all the three actors and their triple avatars. The director is said to have recreated London’s South Hall at Capitol, Mumbai and turned it into a snazzy desi bar. The makers have reportedly spent a fortune on shooting the energetic dance number that is said to be one of the film’s highlights. The film’s producers also hired a special VFX team from Los Angeles for a central scene in the film, which will see Saif in three simultaneous avatars. But it remains to be seen how far the audiences are entertained with this laugh riot on lookalikes. Humshakals is slated to hit the screens by June 20.
ACTION JACKSON This film marks the coming together of choreographer-director Prabhudeva and Ajay Devgn for the first time on screen. Ajay Devgn will be playing the titular role of Jackson in the film, while Sonkashi Sinha will be seen playing his love interest. Action Jackson also stars Yami Gautam and Kunaal Roy Kapoor in prominent roles. The film will see Ajay doing some mind-blowing action, besides grooving to the tunes of Himesh Reshammiya. In fact, Ajay will be seen performing some never-seen-before dance steps with Prabhu Deva for the first time on screen. The title of the film is said to be derived from Ajay’s penchant for stunts and action, while Jackson is homage to Prabhu Deva’s favourite dancer, Michael Jackson. Reports suggest that the two left-footed Devgn has actually attempted Jackson’s Moonwalk in the film. Considering that Ajay is not known to be a great dancer, this will be something to watch out for. The film was recently in the eye of a storm with Warner Bros giving the producers a notice to change its title as Action Jackson was registered with them since 1988 for the Hollywood film featuring Carl Weathers and Sharon Stone. However the makers are determined to go ahead with the title. The film which was to release in June has now been rescheduled for an October release. 4 May 2014 | www.visionasia.co.nz

NUMEROSCOPE
Star birthdays and the year ahead Ace astro-numerologist Bhavikk Sangghvi predicts what the future holds in store for actors Ali Zafar and Anushka Sharma on the eve of their 35th and 26th birthdays.
Anushka Sharma
Anushka’s numbers Anushka was born on 1st May, 1988 which makes her a number 1 (Sun) person in numerology. Like all Taureans, she too is ruled by the number 6 (Venus) while her destiny number adds up to number 5 (Mercury). Being ruled primarily by number 1, considered to be the most powerful number in numerology, Anushka made a scintillating debut in films with the famous Yash Raj banner opposite none other than Shahrukh Khan. It was a dream launch for her. Her numbers and her personality Anushka owes her flawless beauty and complexion to the Venus effect, which also explains the glow on her face. On the other hand, the mercurial effect makes her talkative and communicative in a friendly way, so she connects with people very easily. What the year ahead has in store for her Anushka will now be entering the 27th year of her life which indicates a fairly promising phase ahead. Her work in all her forthcoming releases starting with her home production NH10, followed by P.K. and Bombay Velvet, will be widely appreciated. The three films will also get her commercial and critical success at the box-office. On the personal front too, her proximity and alleged romance with star cricketer Virat Kohli (born on 5th November, 1988) will work positively for her, although she is advised to consolidate her status only next year. Remedies to beat the blues Wearing a Red Coral made in gold on her ring finger on a Tuesday morning (one hour after sunrise) will check any delays in her life and ensure continued good health and high energy levels. 8 May 2014 | www.visionasia.co.nz
Ali Zafar
His numbers Musician, composer, song writer, singer, actor, painter and model, Ali Zafar was born on 18th May, 1980 which makes him a number 9 (Mars) person in numerology. Being a Taurean, he is ruled by the number 6 (Venus) while his destiny number adds up to number 5 (Mercury). What the year ahead has in store for him Ali will now be entering the 35th year of his life which indicates a slightly tough phase for him, both on the mental as well as the physical front. He should also take extra precautions as far as his health is concerned. His fitness levels will hit a low and he should try and control his anger as far as possible. He should also watch out for all throat-related problems. On the career front, his next release Kill Dil will not exactly set the cash registers ringing. However, his performance in the film will be appreciated. Remedies to beat the blues: Wearing a Red Coral set in gold on his ring finger on a Tuesday morning will go a long way in striking a balance with any negative energy. It will also help him keep his blood pressure under control at all times.

She is just four films old but Parineeti Chopra already has a fan following of her own. The actress who was keen on becoming an investment banker at one stage quit everything to virtually be an actress. The fact that she had an affluent cousin, Priyanka Chopra, in the industry further strengthened her determination. She looks back on her successful journey and speaks about her work, her movies and personal life.
How has the year been so far? Are you disappointed with the fact that your contemporary Deepika Padukone walked away with all the awards this time? I was happy about the fact that my name figured in all the nominations. It indicates that my work was appreciated. Besides, Deepika deserves the success and the accolades that she has won. I feel that every actress should do the kind of work that she is doing.

Do you feel it would have helped your career if you had started earlier as an actress? My cousin Priyanka Chopra has been acting for eleven years and has been very successful. I am very proud of her. I am sure I would have gone way ahead in my career if I had started acting then, but I had different career plans at that point of time. I have no regrets. Rather I now feel confident that I can genuinely act. Otherwise, I would still be struggling in the industry.

I did get an offer to work with Salman Khan in a film but the role was not good enough.
It is said that you wanted to become an investment banker before you joined films? I was training to become an investment banker in London and wanted to work there. Unfortunately, there was a worldwide recession in the year that I graduated. Being an Indian national, it hit me hard. Like all other fellow Indians settled in U.K., I was rendered jobless. I came back and started
helping my sister with her work. She was shooting for Pyar Impossible with Yashraj Films. Fortunately, for me, Aditya Chopra and director Maneesh Sharma offered me a career in films, after which there was no looking back. Do you look for meaty roles or the Rs 100 crore commercial films, when it comes to choosing a role? Given an option, I would like to do both kinds of films. Today, there is no formula for success. Even an unconventional film can fetch record audiences. If a Rowdy Rathore can gross a business of Rs 100 crores, a Kahaani and a Barfi, have equally good business prospects. The first factor in choosing a film any day would be about the role offered to me. Even so, I am not very inclined to do off-beat films. I think I am on the right track. The films I have done so far have worked well for my career be it Ladies Vs Ricky Bahl, Shuddh Desi Romance, Ishaqzaade or for that matter even Hasee Toh Phasee. Alia Bhatt is all praise for you and your work? Alia and I have been friends, even before we became actresses. She always says good things about me, and the same applies to me too. I am not such a big actress, but she has been very kind to me. I am confident that Alia will a go a long way in her career. You have been paired with Aditya Roy Kapoor in your upcoming film, DaawatE-Ishq. How was the experience working with Aditya? Aditya and I shared a great rapport during the making of the film. It was fun working with him, especially since both of us are of the same age. We have become good friends now and hang out together. Apart from Aditya, I also enjoyed the experience working with Anupam-sir (Anupam Kher). In fact, I and Aditya would sit with him in the van and talk over a lot of things.

My cousin Priyanka Chopra has been acting for eleven years and has been very successful. I am very proud of her.
How different was the experience working with director Habib Faisal this time, after working with him earlier in Ishaqzaade? Habib is special to me because he gave me Ishaqzaade when I was only one film old. I just followed his instructions while doing that film. Like all other directors, Habib too has his own style of working but this time; I could understand what he really wanted from me as an actor. We had workshops for this film too, as he believes that it makes working an easier experience. The general perception is that you are quite content working with heroes of your age. Aren’t you looking forward to working with the Khans? I would definitely love to do so provided I get the right roles. I did get an offer to work with Salman Khan in a film, but the role was not good enough. Besides, it is not as if I am content working with heroes of my age. There have been many scripts that were offered to me, but I didn’t accept them as I didn’t have much to do in those films. I want to be proud of the films I do. What made you take up a role opposite Govinda in your next film Kill Bill? I was very excited about the prospect of working with filmmaker Shaad Ali. I had seen Shaad’s earlier films, Bunty Aur Babli and Saathiya and I am a big fan of his. That was the reason I took up the role. Apparently, you were required to lose weight and go on a crash diet for the role? Yes, I did have to lose weight for the role, and it seemed a formidable task. I had never gone on a diet earlier, but I had no time for work outs as I was busy shooting back to back. The only other alternative was to go on a diet. I have a very glamorous look in the film so it was very important for me to look good in all those glamorous outfits. Also, I genuinely felt that it was high time I did something about my weight. Every time I tried new clothes, I was worried about the bulges coming out. Now I don’t feel embarrassed wearing tight outfits.
Will we ever see you wearing a bikini in a film? I will wear a bikini if the script justifies it, and if I have the body for it. At the moment, I don’t think I will take that step. What is your opinion on kissing on screen? I have no inhibitions about kissing on the screen. On the contrary, I think a kissing scene is the easiest to handle because it is so clinical. With so many people around, the camera and the director screaming down there is no emotion in the scene. You just get over it. But I am very clear about the fact that I won’t do a kissing scene for commercial reasons. It has to be important. Even in Ishaqzaade, the scenes were extremely important. The whole story takes a turn after those scenes. What is your take on love and live-in relationships? Live-in relationships are okay if you are comfortable with them. Yes, I do believe in love though it has not happened to me yet. But I think that friendship, and love are all inter-related. If I meet a guy who is a good friend whom I can cry with, borrow money, and talk about anything on this earth, that would be love for me. What are the disadvantages of being an actress? The biggest disadvantage of being an actress is the kind of time you have to spend dressing up. I am not a fashion person, but my profession demands that I take care of myself. I also hate donning make up but then these are things that you cannot ignore as an actor in showbiz. Apart from that, I hate it when gossip stories are written about me. It used to hurt me earlier, but now I don’t care.
actress because of him, and I am lucky because he is a director. People have turned our relationship into an affair, and I can’t stop them. I have too much respect for him. I have very few friends in life, and he is one of them. As for Aditya, we are the best of friends, and that’s all there is to it. I feel bad when such reports make the rounds, but then you can’t stop such news from appearing. I am young and single and people try to put two and two together. What does stardom mean to you today? Stardom comes after delivering a series of hits. I guess it will take me some time before I get there. I will be able to define the experience only when I reach that stage in my career. As of now, I am happy giving my best to the films I am doing.
You have been lately linked with Aditya Roy Kapur, while you were said to be dating director Maneesh Sharma at one point. What is your relationship status? Maneesh is a good friend. I became an www.visionasia.co.nz | May 2014 15

Her debut in films It took Aditya Chopra, the Vice President of Yash Raj Films a good deal of convincing, before he decided to sign Parineeti on the dotted line. Chopra was initially appalled by the idea of recruiting someone from his marketing team, as an actress for his banner. His director Maneesh Sharma felt that the young girl from the marketing team had a great potential for acting. However, a casual “dummy audition” worked in her favour when Aditya Chopra saw the tapes and was impressed with her acting skills. He later signed her for a three film contract starting with Ladies Vs Ricky Bahl, as he initiated her in the field of acting.
Philanthropic work Parineeti has a long list of philanthropic work to her credit. She is active in charity work and supports a great deal of causes. She walked the ramp at the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week to support the Shabana Azmi Mijwan Welfare Society, an NGO dedicated to empowering girls. She also supports NDTV’s Greenathon, an initiative to support eco-friendliness and investigate poor electricity supplies in rural villages.
Her career In Ladies Vs Ricky Bahl, Parineeti shared screen space with two other girls but managed to stand out in the role of a spoilt and nouveau-riche Delhi girl. The film also earned her several awards, including the Filmfare Award, the Screen Award, the Apsara Award and the IIFA Award for best debut. Her next film with the banner was Ishaqzaade with debutant Arjun Kapoor, where she played the role of a boisterous Muslim girl who marries a Hindu boy and gives birth to new rivalry in both families. She went on to win the National Film Award-Special Mention, for her performance in the film. That was followed by a romantic comedy drama, Shuddh Desi Romance, in which she where she was widely appreciated. Parineeti’s last release was Hasee Toh Phasee, with Dharma Productions. Interview
I have got a whole new female fanfollowing after the release of Main Tera Hero. When my first film, Student of the Year, I got an altogether different response. The teenage crowd could well connect with the film. Now with Main Tera Hero, it is the female audiences who are excited about the film. Suddenly, I find that girls have started screaming and chasing me. Of course I am aware of the fact that it has more to do with my character in the film. I am quite clear now about my priorities and how I intend to take my acting career ahead. During my growing up years, I would watch a lot of western stand-up comedies like Jim Carry, Ben Stiller and Chris Rock. I would watch them on television, You Tube and DVDs. I would also get intrigued by performances of people on stage. I wanted to do something similar but as I grew older, I got interested in more serious kind of cinema. I felt that I want to explore all these avenues as an actor.
Working with my dad was not a commercial decision. Rather it was an emotional decision for me. My father is 60 plus and has directed 43 films so far. How much more can he work? For the last one year, he has not been in the best of health either. I was a little anxious when he was going through his health crisis. I could have very well worked with him in my third or fourth film but when he expressed his desire to direct me, I felt that I had to do it. Probably I wouldn’t have dared to do this genre of film without him. My father is more of a friend to me than anything else. I have always had this amazing equation with him from my early days. As a kid, my father never scolded me nor did he ever raise his hand against me. Later when I grew up, he would sit down with me and get my opinion on everything, be it the cricket matches or movies. He has this very unique and humorous personality and the two of us have always shared a great rapport with each other. Occasionally he also tries to find out what’s happening in my personal life and sits down with my friends when they come home. To an extent, I too have developed a carefree attitude in life like my father. I also believe in multi-tasking like him. My hero in real life is my elder brother Rohit Dhawan. I owe my success in life to him. He sacrificed a lot for me so that I could realise my dreams. I stopped taking pocket money from my

parents the day Rohit started earning. He took care of all my needs. I remember when I did my first ad way back it was Rohit who guided me through it. Rohit has studied films and was an assistant director himself. When I reached Karan Johar’s office to work as his assistant director on My Name Is Khan, it was Rohit who gave me tips on how I could add value to the project. In fact Rohit was the first person with whom I shared the script of Student Of The Year, when I got it. He is always the first to know everything. When it comes to punctuality my father is my biggest inspiration If he has to start shooting for a 9 a.m. shift and the assistant director is expected at 7.30 a.m., he makes it a point to be present on the sets at 7 am. On the other hand, he is extremely passionate about cinema. Even at the age of 60 he puts in lots of hard work. He meticulously plans his shot breaks and rehearses with the artists. He
never takes anything for granted. When it comes to work, he is a no-nonsense guy even though he has directed some of the biggest comedies in his career. I like it to see the jubilant look on my father’s face when I successfully attempt any physical feat. He has always lauded me for my athletic feats in school and now as a hero. That’s because he was an athlete in his younger days. I remember he was overjoyed when I won the school championship for running in the shortest possible time in my 8th standard. More recently, when I performed a formidable bike stunt in Main Tera Hero, he was all praised for it. He feels that we should all test our physical abilities and go beyond our physical abilities to achieve endurance. When I injured my nose while doing the fight sequence with Siddharth (Malhotra) while shooting for Student of The Year, he called me and said he was glad I was giving my best to my work. I have no qualms about doing negative or grey roles on screen. My only pre-condition is that I should be able to explore a lot more about acting in every character I play. For instance my role in Sriram Raghavan’s thriller film is a complete transformation from the characters I have played in my last two films. It is a complex character and a tough one but I am confident that I will do justice to it. I have set certain targets for myself as an actor. I am aware though that it would take me a lot of time to reach there. By Srabanti Chakravarthy

Exploring
Manila
Manila is a thriving city located on an island nation just 500 miles off the coast of mainland Asia. Accessible, yet remote; modern, yet ancient; Manila has many tales to tell. Here’s a taste of this fabulous travel destination bustling with culture, shopping, industry, and nightlife.
Over 7,000 islands make up the Philippine archipelago with the largest of these islands, Luzon, being home to the capital city Manila. The city itself is a massive metropolis made up of buildings new and old. Here you’ll see the duality of the Philippines: modern, yet cultural; busy, yet laid back; innovative, yet traditional. As Manila struggles to define itself, it has become its own unique city, filled with friendly people who understand perseverance. History buffs and tourists alike should place the walled city of Intramuros at the top of their itineraries. This historic stop features a Spanish fortress, the old Manila Cathedral, San Augustin Church and Museum, shops, restaurants, and park grounds within its walls. Founded in 1571, Intramuros was the home of the ruling Spanish classes. Massive in its scope, Intramuros was surrounded by a wall encircling about 158 acres, complete with drawbridges and fortified with bastions. Over the centuries, Intramuros suffered through invasions by Chinese pirates and was occupied by various forces including the Japanese, British, and Americans. The city eventually fell after severe bombing by US forces during the Battle of Manila. Manila’s Chinatown is another popular

tourist destination. Plan on spending several hours exploring the streets, shops, tea houses, and neighborhoods of this enchanting district. For those who only want a taste of Chinatown, plan a ten-fifteen minute walk down its main street, Ongpin Street. The Cultural Centre of the Philippines offers a glimpse of the excesses of the Ferdinand and Imelda Marcos era. Many of the buildings have fared well over the decades while others are succumbing to the elements. The development’s namesake building, the Cultural Centre of the Philippines is a grand building housing an art gallery, museums, and theatres. Plan a stop at the National Museum of the Filipino People where you’ll learn about the rich history of the Philippines starting some 26,000 years ago. The ancient skullcap of Tabon Man, the earliest known inhabitant of the Philippines, is on display here. Tabon Man is thought to have lived in the Philippines in 24,000 BC. Also displayed is a collection of treasure from the sunken ship San Diego. The San Diego was a Spanish galleon that sank in the waters off of the island of Luzon in 1600.
Another highlight of Manila is the home of the nation’s president: Malacañang Palace. Because of political unrest, this grand building is often closed to the public. While it may not be possible to step inside, the building itself is a sight to behold, if even from afar. The Coconut Palace offers an interesting glimpse into the heyday of Imelda Marcos. The first lady ordered the palace, which would showcase the island’s materials and crafts, built to impress Pope John Paul II. Unimpressed by the excessive ($37 million) cost of the palace in a land where the people desperately needed services, the Pope chose not to visit after all, leaving Imelda Marcos with an empty, albeit grand, palace made up largely of coconut materials. Today, tours of the palace are available as are rentals for weddings and parties. Manila is also a shopper’s paradise. Plan a day of shopping at the Ayala Center where you’ll find designer clothing at a fraction of the cost of stores found in the U.S., Japan, and Europe. If crafts and souvenirs are more your style, head over to Balikbayan
Statues of Monks in Intramuros Handicrafts, where you’ll find authentic Filipino figurines and crafts. Nightlife is happening in Manila with bars, restaurants, discos, and karaoke lounges among the more popular activities. The Malate district, Jupiter Street and Greenbelt in Makati, Libis and Tomas Morato in Quezon City, and Taguig’s Jaipur at the Fort, Pier One, and Embassy Bar are all active hot spots when the sun goes down in Manila. As the capital of the Philippines, Manila is a large city with a rich history. Plan a visit to Luzon and spend a few days uncovering the story of Manila.

I don’t believe in pumping steroids for the
fit look His last release Bewakoofiyan went unnoticed at the box-office but Ayushmann Khurrana’s rippling muscles and his lean look in the film had the women audiences swooning over him. Encouraged by the response to his six-packs, the actor is working doubly hard on his physique for his next few films. He will also be seen performing yoga in one of his forthcoming films, Dum Laga Ke Haisha. He discusses his fitness mantra.

After I cultivated sixpacks I realised that a lot of effort and control goes into achieving a formidable physique.
His initiation into fitness Being a typical Punjabi boy who grew up on butter chicken, parathas and gajar ka halwa, Ayushmann has always found dieting a tough proposition. The actor admits that he had a difficult time when he had to cut down on all the calories and keep his weight in check in order to get the desired physique in Bewakoofiyan. “Controlling my food was tough initially but it gradually became a part of my routine. Also, my trainer kept a check on what I ate all the time. He knows that I have a sweet tooth and am unable to resist sweets.” The actor believes that the best way to get a formidable physique is to work for it with a sensible diet plan and a good workout regimen. He admits that he is not in favour of going for easy shortcuts or the usage of steroids for bulking up his body. “I don’t believe in pumping steroids. My simple home cooked meal more than makes up for the steroids. I am strictly against some of the recently introduced quick formulae which promise you instant body mass and ultimately harm your body,” reveals Ayushmann. His diet mantra: Even before he decided to go on a diet plan, Ayushmann decided to shift to vegetarianism after he joined PETA (People for Ethical treatment of Animals) as its brand ambassador. The actor has now become an eggitarian and includes eggs in his diet as far as possible, “They contain a lot of protein and are excellent for health provided you stick to the egg-whites,” he says. Ayushmann ensures that he has six small meals during the day after every two hours, “It keeps your metabolism going. Also, I make sure that I never keep my stomach empty.”
His daily diet Ayushmann’s day begins with a glass of warm water, followed by a glass of juice. His breakfast consists of brown bread and egg omelet made from four egg whites. Two hours later he has a protein shake and a bowl of salad. Lunch is once again egg whites and a few rotis, followed by a glass of protein shake later during the day. He wraps up his day with an early dinner. “I have stopped eating rice completely. Also, I avoid carbohydrates in the evening. My dinner usually consists of an egg soup and salad. I avoid juices and fruits after 6.00 p.m.,” says the actor. His exercise regime: Now that he has got the body he yearned for, the actor has been working out regularly to maintain himself. “I have not been a fitness freak but I would say my official initiation in the fitness league began after I cultivated six-packs for my role. It made me realize that a lot of effort and control goes into achieving a formidable physique. I don’t want to lose it now. Besides every actor in Bollywood today is working out towards having a fit body.” Ayushmann has a five-day workout plan lined up by his trainer and begins his exercise with a warm-up session followed by an intensive one-hour workout at the gym. The workout has been so designed that he concentrates on one set of exercises for a particular day, “That’s because I work on different parts of the body on different days. I work on my chest and triceps on one day and concentrate on my back and triceps the next day. On the third day I do cross fit training after which I do leg workouts and functional training the next day. That is followed by exercises for the shoulder and biceps, on the fifth day.”
On the weekends he avoids the gym and proceeds for long jogs instead. “My trainer Vinod Channa says that one has to break the system after five days training. I also swim occasionally for an hour. Sometimes I also skip for an hour when I can’t jog or exercise,” he reveals. He ends his workouts on all days with a session of yoga and deep breathing, “It calms down the mind and makes you feel relaxed after all the exhaustion. Now that I am playing a yoga teacher in my next film, I am training in different kind of asanas too,” says Ayushmann. Fitness-the key to success: The actor says that fitness is all about inculcating discipline in life. “It is very important to remain fit to lead a balanced life and fitness cannot be achieved without discipline. Your success also depends on your physical appearance and hence it’s important to remain fit. It is all about living life to your very best,” he concludes. By S. Bhagat

Her debut production Dishkiyaoon met with a dismal box-office response but actress turned producer, Shilpa Shetty, is unaffected by it. The vivacious actress is currently in a phase where she is striking a keen balance between her family and her professional life. She is also looking gorgeous having lost 25 kilos in four months. In an exclusive chitchat with Vision Asia, Shilpa talks about her fitness regime, her little bundle of joy Viaan and her return to films.
Is it a big deal to clean your baby’s nappy and give him a bath? I do everything that a normal mother would do for her kids.
We can’t praise you enough for your newly acquired lean look. What was the inspiration behind the Please share the secret. I am happy that people are complimenting me on my weight loss. I have always been very particular about my figure and my fitness regime. There are a lot of people who maintain their fitness because they want to look beautiful. For me, it is more about fitness than anything else. I made up my mind that I wanted to cut down on all the flab when I saw myself in the mirror a few months ago. I couldn’t recognise myself. It was a tough job for me to get rid of all that weight I had acquired post motherhood. But it was only a question of making up my mind. I am a person who has been always firm about decisions. I want to tell all the mothers-new and old that it is never too late. Just decide and go for it. Most women find the idea of reducing weight a formidable task, especially after motherhood. What would you advise them? My first advice for them is not to give up the urge of shedding weight. When it comes to fitness, one is never too late for it. You can just start working out for three days in a week. For working women who also manage their households, the best day for workouts are weekends. They can join a gym for Saturdays. Even if that is not possible, one can simply go for a 30-minute brisk walk. That should be supported with a balanced diet plan because your hard work will be wasted if you eat fried stuff and drink coke after the exercise. Besides you can still have one day in a week when you can indulge your taste buds and eat everything that you like. How would you define your experience as a producer in your debut film? I would say that it was an eye opener because as a producer you are required to take on the entire responsibility of the film, besides paying everyone. I also realized www.visionasia.co.nz | May 2014 29

how difficult it is to shoot even in a place like Mumbai. The permissions for the shooting and the advances you are required to pay for the locations, mean a lot of investment. As an actor, I was always pampered on the sets. Now after taking up production, I have realised that a lot of work needs to be done behind the scenes too. I have now developed a greater respect for producers and technicians. Why did you opt for a lesser known hero like Harman Baweja when you could have opted for the bigger stars? I wanted an actor who was not seen in the action genre. It would be unfair to judge Harman based on just a couple of films. Sunny Deol was there in the film because we were looking for someone whom Harman could look up to. We also chose a new heroine Ayesha, who was also working as a stylist for the film. I noticed her one day and felt that she was cut out to be a heroine. She is very good looking and a trained jazz dancer. All said and done, it is very difficult to anticipate the box-office verdict. There are several factors that contribute to the success or failure of a film. How much of a role does Raj Kundra play in the decision-making process? My husband looks after the financial aspect, while I take care of the creative. The demarcation is clear even at home. How difficult is it to be a multi tasking mother? I feel very strange when I am asked this question time and again. Is it a big deal to clean your baby’s nappy and give him a bath? I do everything that a normal mother would do for her kids. Whether it’s reading a story or putting him to a sleep, I love to 30 May 2014 | www.visionasia.co.nz
do all these things for Viaan. I am working almost every day so it is very important to have the right balance between the time I spend with my son and my work commitments. I guess I will get some free time once he starts going to play school two months from now. Fortunately, you have so many options and activities to involve your child these days. I do take Viaan to the mall especially at the play area to keep him busy. We heard that your little one was very excited to see you on screen? Yes he thinks that I own the television! Every
time he watches television, he gets very excited if my song comes up. I also did a song in Dishkiyaoon and I am glad, Viaan liked it. He starts clapping every time he hears the tune of the song. When will we see you back doing fullfledged roles in films? That will take some time. As of now, I am happy doing shows like Nach Baliye. You come across so many talented couples in the show and these shows have a great following. By Srabanti Chakravarthy

Abhishek Bachchan’s newfound fascination with sports While a good number of stars are associated with the game of cricket, more stars are now extending their association to other sports too. Ranbir Kapoor, Salman Khan and John Abraham recently ventured into the game of football by becoming the proud franchise owners of the multi-million dollar Indian Super League (ISL). The latest is that the otherwise low-key Abhishek Bachchan has announced his association with the Jaipur franchise of Pro-Kabaddi, a professional kabaddi league. Interestingly, Abhishek has also expressed a keen desire to produce a sports-based film. At a media interaction the actor admitted that it was his long cherished dream to make a sports film. He also said that the sports genre was overlooked in India and the U.S. was doing a great job by promoting sports through their films. It remains to be seen whether Abhishek makes efforts to realize his dream of making a sports film. The other star who has already announced his plans to make a sports film is John Abraham, who is said to planning a film on the game of football.

I want to do everything that I can for my child
The buzz is that you are on a long paternity leave ever since you learnt that your wife Avantika was on the family way. I wanted to be with Avantika which is why I choose to spend as much time with her as possible. We have just returned from our Babymoon in U.K, followed by an extended trip to Netherlands and Brussels. Apart from that, I have been shooting for commercials and reading scripts after which I intend to take a break till mid-June, when the baby is due. You are said to be personally taking care of Avantika ensuring that she is in the best of health. I feel this is the time when I should be by Avantika’s side. I make sure that she is comfortable, massage her back and give her a hot water bag. I want to give her the very best that I can. Fortunately she does not have many cravings, nor does she trouble me at odd hours.
Has she craved for anything special ever since the stork came visiting your home? She had this craving for those special cookies from New York, when I was promoting my film Gori Tere Pyaar Mein with Kareena. She had seen the cookies on Travel and Living channel about a bakery in New York that manufactured the cookies and asked me to get them. I couldn’t go out and shop as I was only there only for a day to promote my film so I called my security guys and told them to get the cookies. They got it from WalMart in big vacuum sealed boxes. I had to leave a pair of shoes behind in order to accommodate the cookies in my baggage. Have you prepared yourself for fatherhood? I want to do everything that I can for my child. When you have a kid you should see to it that you are a good father. My father always put my happiness before his. He would always be there to pick me up from school no matter how busy he was. I too want to be a good and sincere father to my child. Any fond memories of your childhood? My favorite memory was when I was four years old. My Nana (paternal grandfather) used to narrate stories and I would be the hero of that story. Sometimes I would be a mythological hero, a cowboy and there were times when I was also the action hero of the story. I want to narrate similar stories to my son or daughter. My parents did a good job in my upbringing and I want to
do the same. What made you take up the voice over character for the Hindi version of Rio 2? I had been approached to dub for Hollywood films earlier but I had been busy. I always wanted to try it out. When they approached me for Rio 2, I was eager because I had watched Rio 1 and had loved the movie. I loved the character and the way Hollywood actor Jesse Eisenberg had given his voice for the original. I felt that my sense of humour matched perfectly with the concept. How was the experience? When you are dubbing for your own films, it’s easier as you are looking at your own performance. You know when to pause. Here it was different. The character’s humour was straight-faced with a dead pan and awkward expression. Moreover it was a bird speaking and I had to match my tone there. There were different characters and they all spoke with a little nasal accent. They would cock their head while speaking. I tried to make those movements and dub for the film. But all said and done, I loved the experience. www.visionasia.co.nz | May 2014 33

The rule book says that if you wish to give up an American citizenship, you have to pay ten years tax in advance
Why do you think Hollywood films dubbed in Hindi don’t work here? It is difficult to translate Hollywood culture and relate to it as far as the Indian audiences are concerned. In Hollywood films, the punch lines are different too. Do you think more Bollywood stars will take up dubbing of animation films like the stars in the west? I think it should happen a few years from now. The audiences adore stars and producers feel that stars bring value to the film by giving their voices. It won’t be surprising if you find more and more stars doing animation films in the future. We heard that you are no longer doing Bhavesh Joshi, in which you were to play the role of a Gujarati immigrant. What went wrong? I find it difficult to talk about any film that does not work out. It just didn’t happen and there are no ill feelings between me and the makers. I got to know through media reports that Siddharth Malhotra has now been confirmed for the role and I wish him all the best. I have no grudge against anyone. It just didn’t work out and we parted ways mutually. Don’t you feel that when stars dub for international film, it’s unfair on voice over artistes? Many stars also dubbed for the Mahabharat animation film. I have not watched Mahabharat. Also like I said earlier, stars add more value to projects. Unfortunately in India we don’t do many animation films. We don’t have that kind of money to invest in the film and the ones that are made do not match international standards.

What do you think of the current scenario of the elections in our country? I can speak like a guy who keeps track of the daily news but the truth is that I am a U.S. citizen. I can’t vote. At the same time, I have great sense of responsibility towards society. Then why don’t you take part of your uncle Aamir Khan’s reality show Satyameva Jayate? I was there last year as Aamir had invited me. It was a segment on alcohol addiction. Our messages were colliding-he was talking about the dangers of alcohol addiction and I was talking about personal choice and individual liberty. My portion was finally edited out. You said you are a U.S. citizen. Why don’t you try to change your citizenship? I would love to but I hold a U.S. passport. There are legal issues that I would need to tackle. The rule book says that if you wish to give up an American citizenship, you have to pay ten years tax in advance. They can black list you after that and you may not be able to travel to that country. Have you ever been frisked at U.S. airports like superstar Shah Rukh Khan, who has often attributed it to his surname ‘Khan’? I haven’t spoken about this before but there have been several occasions where I have been frisked because of my surname. I never made a mention of it because I did not want to rake up a controversy. It takes an additional 10 minutes and it is a norm out there. We have to just wait as it’s the law there. Why make an issue out of it. Given an opportunity which star would you like to vote for? I would like to vote for Rakhi Sawant now that she is contesting the election. Rakhi is a sweet person in her own way. By S. Bhagat

You are said to be the highest paid actor on television. How does that make you feel? I wouldn’t know if I am the highest paid because I am not aware of what the other actors charge. I do know that I get what I deserve and I take the medium very seriously. Television is my bread and butter, it’s my home base. I have a certain responsibility towards the audience that watches me at home. At the moment, I strive to entertain my audiences in my serial Adaalat. It’s been on air for the last three and a half years and continues to keep the audiences engrossed.
Ronit Roy, India’s highest paid television actor opens up in a candid chat with Subhash K Jha.
What would you say is your key to success in a medium that is not taken so seriously? I believe that the formula for survival is sheer hard work and talent. If I am paid a certain amount on television, it’s because the producers do not want to let go of me. Otherwise they would have quickly replaced me and got someone at a lower price. What was the inspiration behind taking up the role in Adaalat? When I took on the serial I was very clear that I didn’t want to educate or preach. I just wanted to entertain. Luckily for all of us, the viewers identify with us. We bring in social issues within the legal framework of the serial. Sometimes we do go wrong with the episodes but we are in tune with the audiences most of the times. How have you prevented boredom from setting in after doing the same serial for more than three years? I don’t think about boredom. It’s my job to entertain and getting entertained is not part of the job. There are so many people who do the same job for 30 years. I did two daily soaps Kyunki Sans Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi and Kasauti Zindagi Kay for nine years. Adaalat is a different serial where we get
to do and say different things each time. At the moment it is doing really well. There are a hundred families that depend for their livelihood on this show. On an average, I spend 12 hours of the day on the sets of Adaalat. How do you look back on your association with Ekta Kapoor? I owe my success as a television actor to Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi and Kasauti Zindagi Ki. I was down-and-out before I started working in these two serials. They opened up a whole new world for me. In those nine years I grew astonishingly as a human being and as an actor. They also gave me my identity and sense of selfworth. I virtually grew tall with them. Many enduring actors started at the same time as you? I was part of that group of television actors like Ali Asgar, Ram Kapoor, Sakshi Tanwar and Kapil Sharma who started at the same time. Today I’m happy to see Kapil doing so well for himself. What has happened to Kapil and Manish Paul also happened to me. As the Bhagvat Gita says “if you are firm and unshakable in your belief, it’s just a matter of time before you find your bearings.”

Ram Kapoor had instant success on television. I had to struggle for it.
You are often seen as Ram Kapoor’s closest rival on television? Ram Kapoor had instant success on television. I had to struggle for it. I became an actor in 1992 with the film Jaan Tere Naam. I got Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi in the year 2000. What do you have to say about television actors who use the medium as a steppingstone to cinema? You can’t take television for granted. If you do, you will soon be out. Today the medium is in a flux with so much happening on it. Now we have reality television which has staunch followers. Frankly, television is too large a medium to be treated casually. It is so big that it can survive without the biggest of actors or shows. If Ram Kapoor or I were to quit television, it would make no difference to the medium. Kaun Banega Crorepati is also terrific but if it stops the medium is unlikely to suffer. Do you think soaps have run out of lather? Soaps will always be a part of television entertainment. If they were out of favour producers would have stopped making them way back. I agree that we no longer have soaps have like Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi. Earlier we had just a handful of channels. Now there are 500 channels so viewers are spoilt for choices. You were recently seen in 2 States as Arjun Kapoor’s Punjabi father? It’s a very small role, a cameo actually. Karan Johar and I share a very strong bonding. I can never say no to him. I had even done Student Of The Year for him, although it was a small role. I am glad Karan had done to my presence in 2 States. It is a short but impactful role. I’ve received lots of messages complimenting me on the role. People say they like my work. 42 May 2014 | www.visionasia.co.nz
On an average, I spend 12 hours of the day on the sets of Adaalat You have created a fine balance between your television and cinema career? I am like a labourer. I just do my work. Unlike many other actors I don’t follow any strategies. Every morning I get up and go to work hoping the quality of work would be good. I don’t have a fixed criterion nor do I think of the impact. If I did, I wouldn’t have played the alcoholic violent father in Vikramaditya Motwane’s Udaan. My father never wanted me to be a part of an uncertain profession like acting. But when I took the plunge I took it whole-heartedly. Speaking of uncertainty what is happening to your very important film Anurag Kashyap’s Ugly? I wouldn’t know. My job in the film is done.
They are fighting a case in court against carrying the anti-smoking warning on screen. We’ll have a judgement on that soon. What is your take on every film carrying the anti-smoking warning? I’ve been a smoker all my life though I am not chain-smoker. I am not proud it. For many years I tried hard to quit but failed miserably. As a smoker I’d advise anyone who doesn’t smoke to never try it. As for those like me who are caught in the smoking zone, one should just keep trying to quit. It will just happen one fine day.

Stars and their
political leanings The election fever is at its peak in India. The world’s largest democracy has just gone to the polls. For a change, the political stars have descended from their thrones and are busy rallying around trying to connect with the masses. Vision Asia caught up with the B-town stars to find out what the elections meant for them and how they perceived the India of tomorrow.
I would not be able to comment on any political party, but I think it’s important for every Indian to be connected to social issues. This is a democratic country, and if we want it to be healthy, we need to be aware of our rights. Eternal vigilance is the need of the hour, and if you do not do that, you are letting go of your right as a citizen. It doesn’t matter which profession you are in as long as you know what’s happening politically and socially and how it is impacting you. I see myself as a communicator in the whole process.
I decided to contest the elections on behalf of the Bharatiya Janta Party because I want this country to get a sense of balance from the kind of crisis it has been going through. Today the masses are desperately seeking change, and my party represents that change. It is time for people to stop reacting on perceptions and voted for their issues.

I am not very wellinformed about politics, but I do believe in the vision of the Prime Ministerial candidate, Narendra Modi. As a citizen of today, I will support him and encourage others to do so. That’s because I am batting for development. Mr. Modi has changed the infrastructure of Gujarat and brought in so much development. I think we need a leader like him.
Juhi Chawla (Veteran Actress)
I may not be able to comment on the strengths and weaknesses of the parties and their contestants, but I certainly intend to vote. It is very important for all of us to choose the right candidate. I was in politics too at one stage, but I guess I was not the right candidate. Today we need a candidate who can translate our ideas and dreams for a better future.
Amitabh Bachchan (Veteran Actor and Television Host)
I do not have the right to vote since I am a U.S. citizen, but I am aware of the issues faced by India. The biggest problem in the country is the poor literacy rate. It is because of the lack of education and awareness that the people are unable to identify their rights and speak about them. If we want to seek change, we need to make our country hundred percent literate. That can be the beginning of change.
Imran Khan (Actor)
I wouldn’t be able to comment on which is the best political party, but I want to appeal to the youth to come out and vote and increase the vote count. I will not support any party. I feel that citizens should study their politicians and what they have done for their constituencies. There is also a lot of information on the internet and it becomes easier to choose the right candidate. The youth often spend time on researching on their favorite eateries and theatres. For a change, they can research on the politicians too. It is important to make a wise decision if you want change to happen.

I can only ask people to go out and vote for people whom they would like to see as their leader. We want to live in a happy country. After watching things on television and reading, I think people will be able to make up their minds about who they should vote for.
Shah Rukh Khan (Actor)
My father taught us from childhood that one should always stand in support of a person who does his job sincerely and delivers the goods. The same applies to politics too. All of us in the family feel that Narendra Modi, who is contesting on behalf of the BJP, has both the vision and the determination to bring about a change in India. We as a nation are looking for change, and he can make it happen. My father who is a politician himself has clear views on this. Moreover, we need a corruption-free India. I think is time to eradicate corruption and also bring the petrol rates down.
Sonakshi Sinha (Actress and daughter of politician, Shatrughan Sinha)
This is a democratic country and if we want it to be healthy, we need to be aware of our rights.

Kareena the next item girl She mesmerized her fans with her sizzling ‘Fevicol’ act in Dabbang 2 after which Kareena Kapoor Khan had announced that it would be her last item number on screen. But it looks like the actress is in no mood to give up on item numbers yet. Kareena will now be seen in a sensational item number in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Gabbar. The actress’ stylized look in the song in denim jeans and long boots was recently revealed on the internet and saw her online fans going crazy. Apparently Kareena chose to make Gabbar an exception since it meant working with the banner of Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Sources reveal that Bhansali wanted to add to the glamour quotient in the Akshay-Shruti Haasan starrer and convinced Kareena to take up the challenge. The actress has also signed Rohit Shetty’s Singham 2 and is also making a special appearance in Saif’s next venture Happy Ending being directed by Raj and D.K.

I feel proud to be the founder of
Generation Zero Kirk Serpes is the pioneering force behind Generation Zero, a youth-led organisation founded with the purpose of providing solutions to cut carbon pollution through smarter transport and independence from fossil fuels. A mechanical engineer of Indian origin, Kirk has been spreading the awareness of climate change since 2005. He also attended the UN Climate Change negotiations in Mexico as the Co-leader of New Zealand Youth Delegation, an organization spearheaded by him. 1. What are your Hobbies/Passions? One of my hobbies is dancing. I even competed at Modern Jive a couple of years ago. Other than that, I enjoy cooking and trying out craft beer. New Zealand actually has quite a huge selection of locally produced craft beer. Apart from that, I love travelling to interesting places when I get the chance. 2. What is your idea of perfect happiness? Getting paid to work on creating social change and making the world a better place 3. What is your success mantra? Someone somewhere has already tried this. Google it instead of reinventing the wheel 4. Who or what is your inspiration? I don’t know if I’ve really had someone who inspired me to create change. I’ve got most of my values from my parents especially this attitude of “if you see something wrong, do something about it.” So when I got involved in the climate change movement, I saw a problem and decided to do something about it. 5. What is your most memorable moment? Landing in Mexico as the co-leader of NZ Youth Delegation to the UN Climate negotiations. Here I was, an Indian guy with a funny name, who had only moved to NZ in his teens, leading a team of really bright, switched-on young Kiwis to represent our country on the world stage. 6. How important is it to fail before you succeed? Personally I feel I have learnt as much from success as from failure. But failing is inevitable at some point and it helps if you take the right lessons from it. 7. What do you value most in life? Having purpose and people you love 8. Favourite movie and star? It will have to be Will Smith. Independence Day is one of my favourite movies. It’s just so beautifully simple. 9. Favourite food/restaurant? I quite like Korean food and Sichuan Chinese; I like the great eating outlets on Dominion road near Balmoral. 10. Favourite Sport and player? I prefer watching Rugby to cricket. It’s a lot more fun. My favourite player though is MS Dhoni. He was brilliant in the World Cup Final against Sri Lanka. 11. Favourite holiday destination? Mexico-I had one of the best holidays of my life there. Everything was so different, exciting and interesting. 48 May 2014 | www.visionasia.co.nz
12. What do you love or admire in New Zealand? New Zealand is a laid back and down-to-earth place. And it’s probably one of the most beautiful places on the earth to live, even in the big cities. 13. What outdoor activities do you like/how do you relax? I like going for the odd bush walk in NZ with a few good friends. When that’s not possible, I do writing, reading or playing online games. Basically it has to be anything that requires my full concentration and distracts me from work. 14. Which talent would you most like to have? Self-discipline 15. The craziest things you’ve ever done? Nothing that I can talk about publicly 16. What is your greatest fear? Not living life to the fullest-missing out on the opportunities to go to new places, meeting new people, having adventures and changing the world 17. What do you think is the secret to a good life? I’m still trying to figure out what a good life means for me, let alone anyone else. 18. If your house was on fire and you could only grab three things what would they be? Probably my smart phone, laptop and my shoes-I’m incredibly practical. 19. What phrase or words do you use the most? Well basically!! It annoys me how often I say that. 20. Name one achievement that you are proud of: Being one of the founders of Generation Zero, a decently large youth organisation.
