Aishwarya’s comeback may take a while It has been some time now since various stories have been doing the rounds about Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s comeback film post motherhood. Recently there was news that Ash had been confirmed for ad-man Prahlad Kakkar’s ambitious film, Happy Anniversary, opposite husband Abhishek Bachchan. Kakkar even went on record to a section of the media, confirming their presence in the film. However both Abhishek and Aishwarya chose to remain silent, neither confirming nor denying the news. When the former Miss World was recently quizzed about her comeback plans on the eve of her birthday, she revealed that she had not made up her mind about any film, “I have not signed any film so far. Besides it will take me some time to come back to Bollywood. I’m definitely looking forward to getting back to work though.” the Bachchan bahu said. The actress also added that she was currently busy with her two-year old daughter, Aradhya’s upbringing, “I want to give her everything that my parents have given me. My journey has been very fruitful and I have no place for negativity in my life. I am contended in life,” she said.

. R. Rahman’s Oscar award-winning song Jai Ho, is now available in a new avatar for his international fans. Arab musician and an ardent Bollywood fan, Alaa Wardi who is known for his unique covers of Bollywood songs, has collaborated with American pop singer Peter Hollens, to redefine the song in an all-new style. The two have given a twist to the original song by adding ‘A Cappella’ beats. Rahman recently tweeted about the song saying, “America and the Middle East Unite for an Indian Song!”. Jai Ho, composed by Rahman, featured in the 2008 film Slumdog Millionnaire and won an Oscar for Best Original Song. Girl band The Pussycat Dolls had subsequently done an English cover of the song named Jai Ho (You Are My Destiny), which was re-released in their album ‘Doll Domination’.

hah Rukh Khan will be seen in the role of a Gujarati don in Farhan Akhtar’s next film, for which scripting is currently underway. The film will be produced by Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Siddhwani’s banner Excel Entertainment and directed by Rahul Dholakia. Shah Rukh had last teamed up with Farhan in the successful Don franchise. fter the critically acclaimed Madras Café, John Abraham is now set to produce a sports film. In a recent media interaction, John revealed that he was keen on making sportsbased films and the first one in the league would be on the game of football. He also added that it would not be a biopic but a true-life story replete with adventure. It may be recalled that the actor-producer made his production debut with the very successful, Vicky Donor, followed by Madras Café, which ran into controversy after Tamil groups called for a ban on the film.

A

ctress Deepika Padukone, will be seen playing an out-of-work bar dancer in her next film, Happy New Year. The actress, who is currently riding high on the success of her last few films, has been working hard to justify her role in the film. Deepika recently revealed that she was trying to meet the expectations of director Farah Khan in keeping with the list of do’s required, one of them being great dancing skills. Deepika’s character in the film will be seen influencing the lives of Shah Rukh Khan, Abhishek Bachchan, Sonu Sood, Vivaan Shah and Boman Irani -all of them dancers out win a dance trophy.

T

he unit of the Salman Khan starrer Kick is gearing up for an extensive shooting schedule in London, following the permission granted by a Jodhpur court for Salman to travel abroad. Earlier director Sajid Nadiadwala and the crew of the film were forced to return from Glasgow after camping there for three weeks, when Salman could not make it. The superstar who has been embroiled in the 14-year old black buck shooting case was denied a visa by the UK consulate for the London schedule.

eteran actor Gulshan Grover is all set to return as a powerful baddie with the SaifSonakshi starrer, Bullet Raja. Moreover the film has got a special request from the royal family and heir to the British throne, Prince Charles, who has asked for a DVD of the film from Gulshan Grover. The film is now being urgently readied with English subtitles so that it can be sent to Prince Charles. Few are aware that Gulshan, who has adored Prince Charles for his selfless charitable work, recently got a special invitation from the Prince’s office to attend the sit down black tie dinner in Mumbai. When Gulshan reached, he was affectionately greeted by Mark Shand, brother of Prince’s wife, Camilla, and her sister Annabel Elliot, who were seated on the same table. www.visionasia.co.nz | December 2013

He has never treaded the conventional path to success. In his 25year career in Indian cinema, Aamir Khan has challenged the existing norms of acting and filmmaking and scaled new heights of success. His utter diligence has earned him the tag of an uncompromising perfectionist, who is prepared to go to any lengths to justify his roles on screen. Now for the first time in his career, Aamir is all set to play a role with grey shades in Dhoom 3, one of the most talked about films of the year. In a group media interaction, the superstar spoke about the role, his career and his expectations.

www.visionasia.co.nz | December 2013 11

Cover Story

Expectations are running high around Dhoom 3 and trade pundits are eagerly counting on the film to take the box-office by storm. Do you feel pressurized considering the record business of your earlier film 3 Idiots? I do feel apprehensive every time I have a release on hand and Dhoom 3 is no exception. I am not concerned about the box-office numbers though. I hope people like the film and feel happy about it. Dhoom 3 is a well-mounted film and the action in the film certainly has an edge. I want the whole film to be remembered by the audiences, not just my role. What made you opt for Dhoom 3? When director Vijay Krishna Acharya, whom we fondly address as Victor, narrated the story to me I was very excited. I was so taken up with the storyline that I immediately said yes to the film. I had not seen Dhoom 2 though I had seen the first installment Dhoom, but I was far too excited with the script of this film. How challenging was it working on this film? For me every film and every role I do is a challenge and Dhoom 3 was no doubt a big challenge. In fact, I would say that this was the toughest role ever in my 25-year old career. Some of the stunts were amazing but formidable too. Luckily I did not break any

bones. Prior to this, I had attempted action in Ghajini but it was a different kind of action. The action in Dhoom 3 was more thrilling. We are told that you worked hard on your body and fitness? I am playing a gymnast in the film and hence was kept on a strict diet for two years. I also went for circus training for the film. It was a good journey, challenging most of the times. This is the first time you are playing a negative role in a film? I am not playing the quintessential villain in the film. The villains in Dhoom are different; they are not the regular villains. In the film, my character does not have shades of black. He has his own circumstances and compulsions for doing things. Who is your favourite villain in the industry? My favourite is Pran-saab. I was frightened of him once upon a time. I considered him the ultimate villain of the industry. Apart from that, we have had some amazing actors as villains from Madan Puri to Amjad Khan, Prem Chopra and Amrish Puri. How was the equation between you, Abhishek Bachchan and Uday Chopra? During the film’s shoot, I would often address Abhishek and Uday as Yajud-Majud. In my childhood days, my mother often used to tell

me stories of these two angels. One of them keeps advising you not to do bad things and the other one coaxes you to do evil. In the film Uday is evil at heart but in real life he is a very straight forward person. In fact, both Abhishek and Uday are just opposites. Uday is very serious about everything and Abhishek is very naughty. How was the experience of working with Katrina Kaif? Katrina is fun to work with. She is a fantastic dancer and is extremely flexible. Her dance steps in the numbers were very difficult as she is playing a gymnast in the film. Sometimes I would wonder if she would be able to pull it off but she rehearsed for a month before giving her take. She has done a great job in the film. You are known to be a marketing genius when it comes to the promotional strategies of your films. What about Dhoom 3? We have not planned anything as yet. We are still working on the marketing campaign. To start with, we want the promos to generate enough excitement in the minds of the audiences. Apart from that, YRF is a great production house. They are well-versed with the business and are good at marketing. There are reports that the trailer of Salman Khan’s Jai Ho will be released along with

Will Dhoom 3 prove to be a trend-setter at the box-office?

Katrina is fun to work with. She is a fantastic dancer and is extremely flexible.

Dhoom 3. How do you perceive this strategy? Salman is a dear friend and anything he does will help us. He has seen the promos and sent me a text message that he loved them. Don’t you ever pressurize him to get married? I have been telling him for so long to get married but he never listens to me. I wonder if Katrina ever asked him why he didn’t get married. I would love to see them together in real life. But then it’s my wish, I don’t know if they will listen to me. I have seen Katrina romance and will give her full marks. I can’t tell you whom she romances in her life. You are said to be an ardent fan of cricketing legend, Sachin Tendulkar. We saw you at the stadium cheering Sachin in your lucky shirt but not your Dhoom hat? Yes, I was emotional when I saw him playing. I didn’t wear a hat because he has created

Yash Raj Films’ latest product, Dhoom 3, is one of the most anticipated films from the banner. The fact that it is an Aamir starrer makes it even more special. Known to be extra particular about his choice of roles, Aamir has gone out of his way to work on his role in this film. He is playing the antagonist for the very first time in his career and has done the kind of action that he has never attempted earlier. After John Abraham in Dhoom and Hrithik Roshan in Dhoom 2, Aamir is slated to give a new dimension to the bad man on screen. The perfectionist actor holds the unique distinction of delivering India’s biggest hit, 3 Idiots, which was also released on the eve of Christmas. Dhoom 3 is also the first time that Aamir Khan and Katrina Kaif have been paired together on screen. Katrina is expected to up the glamour quotient in the film way higher than the earlier two installments. YRF is said to have spent Rs150 crores in the making of the film. Now one will have to wait and watch whether it goes one step beyond the Krrish 3 record and set the trend for the Rs 300 crore club.

Dhoom on the field and hats off to him. He is one of a kind in billions. Would you like to play cricketer Sachin’s role if a film is made on him? I would love to play Sachin if anyone ever makes a film on him. There are no two ways about it. What after Dhoom 3? We are told that you are planning Satyameva Jayate Season 2? I will be shooting for Raju Hirani’s Peekay after this film. After that I intend to start working on Satyamev Jayate Season 2. We are now working on the research part. We will start shooting it in a year or two.

I would love to see Salman and Katrina together in real life.

When will we see you direct your next film? I have been busy working as an actor and have interesting projects in the pipeline. I have no plans of direction for now. I do have a script in mind but it’s too early to talk about it.

Cover Story

The Beginning Aamir Hussain Khan was born on 14 March 1965 in Mumbai. His father, Tahir Hussain, was a film producer while his uncle, Nasir Hussain, was a producer-director. Aamir started off his career as a child artiste in 1973 with Yaadon Ki Baraat, his uncle Nasir Hussain’s film. His official acting debut happened at the age of 19 with Ketan Mehta’s Holi. The actor however, went unnoticed in the film. It was only his next big movie; the super hit Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak in 1988, which made him an overnight star. The film was directed by his cousin, Mansoor Khan and Aamir became the next chocolate hero of Bollywood with a huge female fan following. The Success Story: In 1989, Aamir got a Special Jury Award for his performance in the critically acclaimed film Raakh. His subsequent films from Indra Kumar’s Dil (1990), Mahesh Bhatt’s Dil Hai Ki Manta Nahin (1991), Mansoor Khan’s Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar (1992), Mahesh Bhatt’s Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke (1993) and Ram Gopal Varma’s Rangeela (1995) were back to back hits. Other hits included Rajkumar Santoshi’s Andaaz Apna Apna with Salman Khan (1994), Raja Hindustani with Karisma Kapoor (1996), Indra Kumar’s Ishq (1997) and Vikram Bhatt’s Ghulam (1998). His next Sarfarosh (1999) with debutant director John Mathew Matthan also won him appreciation. He started experimenting with roles like the one in Deepa Mehta’s Earth (1998). His critically acclaimed film, Rang De Basanti (2006) acquired the status of a cult classic, with youth all over the country endorsing the film. The film also won him the Filmfare Critics Award. Launches His Banner Aamir Khan Productions Aamir Khan has produced seven films so far; while his eighth film Peekay, directed by Rajkumar Hirani, is currently under production. It was in 2001 that Aamir announced his own production house with the film, Lagaan. The film directed by Ashutosh Gowarikar proved to be a major critical and commercial success and received a nomination for Best Foreign Language Film at the 74th Academy Awards. In Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na, he launched his nephew Imran Khan. He also produced Dhobi Ghat which was his wife Kiran Rao’s directorial venture, besides Peepli Live directed by another debutant director Anusha Rizvi, Delhi Belly directed by debutant director Abhinay Deo and Talaash by Reema Kagti. Directorial Debut: In 2007 Aamir made his directorial debut under his own banner with the film, Taare Zameen Par. Once again he chose an offbeat film for his debut directorial venture. The film revolved around a dyslexic child and was critically as well as commercially appreciated.

Promotional strategies Aamir began to take a keen interest in the marketing strategy of films with A.R.Murugadoss’ remake of the Tamil hit Ghajini, which was released in 2006. He set a trend for promotional strategies with this film. Aamir bulked up his physique for the film and made a promotional video to get reactions for it. He also publicized his Ghajini buzz cut look with staff at all the theatres sporting the look. That was followed by his unique marketing strategy in Rajkumar Hirani’s 3 Idiots. Prior to the release of the film, Aamir disguised himself and went around the country meeting his fans to explore the real India and its people. The fan who recognized him was later presented with a gold coin. His television debut: It was during his promotional strategy of 3 Idiots that gave Aamir an insight into the real India and the problems faced by the people in the interiors. He deviated into television with his chat show Satyamev Jayate which was telecast in all major Indian languages. Aamir dealt with several serious social issues on the show, which became one of the most controversial and highly watched programmes of the year. He also made it to the cover page of Time Magazine’s Asia edition in September 2012 issue with the title “Khan’s Quest”. His Personal Life Aamir married his high school sweetheart Reena Dutta on 18th April 1986 after the success of Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak. They have two children - son Junaid and daughter Ira. They were an ideal couple until differences began to surface and they ended their 15-year old marriage in 2002 with a divorce. Three years later in 2005 Aamir married Kiran Rao, who was assisting Ashutosh Gowarikar in Lagaan. They now have a son Azad, born through a surrogate mother. Aamir Khan is averse to awards Aamir Khan has a reputation for shunning award ceremonies. Though nominated many times he does not attend any award ceremonies except the National Award, as he believes that it is the only award of repute. The actor was also honoured with the Padma Shri in 2003 and Padma Bhushan in 2010 for his contribution towards the arts. Khan had also been invited to have his wax replica on display at Madame Tussauds. However the actor declined the offer as he did not consider it important enough. Philanthropic Work Aamir Khan has been doing a lot of philanthropical work through his profession. The actor however does not like to publicise his work as he feels it is something close to his heart. Aamir Khan tried to help a number of people through his television serial Satyamev Jayate. He was also seen and heard

collaborating with Bill Gates on the issues. He was appointed as national brand ambassador of UNICEF to promote child nutrition in 2011. He supported the Adivasi tribes who were displaced from their homes due to the Gujarat government’s decision to raise the height of the Narmada dam in the Narmada Bachao Andolan. Aamir also lent support to the Janlokpal Bill Movement led by Anna Hazare in August 2011. Endorsements Like in his films, Aamir has also been experimenting with his commercial endorsements. The actor went into different avatars for the Coca Cola commercials during his decade long association with the brand. He has also endorsed Titan watches and Tata Sky. It was last heard that he clinched the highest deal of Rs 88 crores for the Godrej Commercials, where he appeared as a woman.

I would love to play Sachin if anyone ever makes a film on him.

Chitra Singh steps forward to revive

Jagjit Singh’s musical legacy

Chitra Singh shares fond memories of her late husband, ghazal maestro Jagjit Singh, his musical legacy and how life has changed for her after his death, in a conversation with Subhash K Jha.

It has been two years since famed ghazal maestro passed away leaving a void in the music industry. His wife, Chitra Singh, has now taken on the onus to keep the singer’s memories alive. A month ago, Chitra Singh organized a concert at the Nehru auditorium in Mumbai and was overwhelmed by the response. “The auditorium was overflowing with young people. There were people standing and watching. Most of them were young and many had to be turned away for want of seats. I don’t think any other artiste in any part of the world would enjoy this kind of love and adulation after death. Jagjit-ji always had a wide range of listeners from little children to people as old as 82 years.” According to Chitra, her husband poured his heart and soul into his music and this was reflected in his musical excellence and his warm personality. “Jagjit-ji’s excellence as a musician had a lot to do with the kind of person that he was. He wasn’t just a one-man musical institution. He was also an exceptional human being. The music came from his soul and his voice was akin to a call from divinity.” Chitra, a trained ghazal singer herself, has no plans to return to singing. “I haven’t sung

for 33 years now, after tragedy struck my family with the loss of my son and later my daughter. Jagjit-saab’s death was the final blow. Returning to singing requires rigorous hours of riyaaz and I do not think I would be able to do it.” Her eyes well up with tears every time she remembers her husband. She admits that she has been living a lonely existence post Jagjit Singh’s death. “At times, I feel like an empty shell walking around. After Jagjit-saab left, life is not the same anymore,” she says. The only inspiration that keeps her going, besides keeping his musical legacy alive, is to complete the task that Jagjit Singh was unable to do before he passed away. “He had a dream which I am trying to fulfill. Among other

things, he wanted to start a music academy where talented youngsters could be trained to take over as future stalwarts. His dream didn’t materialize in his lifetime and I want to make sure it happens at least in my lifetime. There is also a foundation in his name which takes care of the needy. I am planning to take up that cause on his behalf too. There’s a lot to be done.” Chitra is aware that she may have to walk it alone to fulfill Jagjit Singh’s dreams, since none of his friends or people from the music industry have so far come forward to support the cause. “I haven’t seen the same support coming from anyone to carry his legacy forward.” She also feels that some of Jagjit Singh’s friends are apprehensive about communicating with her because of her reputation of being a very private person. “Probably, they are hesitant to come to me. Most of his friends have not known me and the ones who do have not taken kindly to me. Maybe they think I am hoity-toity. I hope this impression wears off and people who loved Jagjit-ji would come forward to help me carry his legacy forward,” she concludes.

In remembrance

Jagjit-ji’s excellence as a musician had a lot to do with the kind of person that he was.

It is this great following for Jagjit Singh’s legacy of music that Chitra Singh is hoping to carry forward. “I am very optimistic about the revival of Jagjit-saab’s music. He is the only contemporary musician who has kept pure music alive and that cannot die,” Chitra says. www.visionasia.co.nz | December 2013 17

She seems to be the lady of the moment with an exciting slew of roles in her kitty. From playing a mutant in Krrish 3 to a danseuse in Rajjo, a dacoit-cum politician in Revolver Rani and a Queen in her next film, Kangana Ranaut is looking forward to rule the box office. ENCOUNTER

“I find it exciting to do an author-backed role where the film entirely revolves around me.”

Your line-up of releases indicates that you seem to be in the mood to experiment with challenging and diverse roles. Is it a deliberate decision? It’s not as if I am picking up films and choosing roles. It is the directors who have cast me because of their faith in my acting abilities. They have all visualized me in drastically different roles. My role in Krrish 3 had grey shades, while Rajjo has me playing the role of a skilled dancer who has the ability to seduce men and dance her way to glory. In my next film, Revolver Rani, I play the role of a politician-dacoit from the dreaded Chambal valley. I will be seen doing some breath-taking action in the film. While Krrish 3 required me to look beautiful, I have an ugly look in this film with scars on my face and a crooked nose. I have also used a lot of prosthetics for the role. There is also another film Queen, in which I play the title role. Frankly, I am enjoying this phase where I am getting a chance to experiment with roles. On one hand you opted for a big film like Krrish 3 and on the other hand, you also did a small-budget film like Rajjo. On what basis do you choose your roles? It does not matter to me whether it’s a big budget or a small film. For me, my work and

kothas have now been demolished and they are struggling to make a living. Ideally, the government should find alternate jobs for them. Don’t you feel burdened about the idea of carrying a film on your shoulders, when it comes to doing out and out woman oriented films like Rajjo, Revolver Rani or Queen? I have no such apprehensions. On the contrary, I find it exciting to do an author-backed role where the film entirely revolves around me. Apart from that a film is the result of the collective efforts of the entire team, but it is the director who guides and channelizes all the creativity that goes into it. It is the director who is the real hero behind-the-scenes. You are a lot more subdued now than you were in your earlier years, when you were known to be brash and irritable. What has brought about the changeover? I guess I have grown wiser with age. Earlier, I used to react on impulse without thinking of the consequences. That has changed now. I was raw and young and very new to the industry at that time. Now I have learnt to be calm and take things in my stride. The past few years have taught me a lot. Also earlier, I would often feel the pain of having to leave my

As an actor I had dreamt of doing roles like the ones in Tomb Raiders or Super Woman, where I could perform dare-devil action. Krrish 3 gave me that opportunity. On the other hand, Rajjo gave me an opportunity to portray my expertise in dancing, which I had never explored in any of my earlier films. We are told that you researched extensively for the role of Rajjo and even interacted with prostitutes in the by-lanes of Mumbai to get a hang of the role. What was the experience like? It was a very enlightening experience. I had expected that these women would be similar to the loud, garishly made-up, gaudily dressed prostitutes that we see on screen but they were exactly the opposite. I noticed that they were not only graceful but also had a lot of etiquette. In fact, most of the girls I met reminded me of the characters of Rekha from Umrao Jaan and Waheeda Rehman from Pyaasa. These girls learn to attract men and impress them from a very young age with the art of dancing. It’s sad that their traditional

Now that your older sister Rangoli has gotten married, aren’t you looking forward to settling down too? I am happy for my sister. My parents want me to find a companion and settle down too, but they understand my professional constraints. I am happy with one family; I don’t want to get into the responsibilities of another family. Right now I want to concentrate on my job and do justice to all the wonderful roles that I am being offered. I am sure I will find a companion some day and settle down in the time to come. You are surrounded by some of the best looking men in the industry. What qualities are you looking forward to in your man? I admit I am always surrounded by good looking men but I don’t find any of them attractive. I am no longer the starry-eyed

teenager. When I was 16, I wanted to date all the good looking men in filmdom and sports. I would store posters of my favourite heroes and cricketers, but as I grew up my ideas about men changed. I realized that there had to be more to a man than sheer good looks. A woman has to find the qualities she admires in her man. For me, it’s a man’s honesty and his straight forward approach to life that matters a lot. It should reflect in his eyes because I too am a very honest person at heart. Unlike your counterparts, you are not one for socializing with other Bollywood personalities much. You are not a regular at parties either. Do you have reservations of the past? I don’t have any reservations nor do I regret anything in the past. I have no regrets about any of my films either. My work helped me pay my loan installments on time and paved the way for my independence as a single woman. I am full of gratitude for the kind of work that I got and did. I would say I have an attitude for gratitude. As for socializing, I am a very moody person. I don’t like to dance at weddings or attend parties. I am more comfortable keeping to myself. Your recent decision to make your presence felt on social media shows that you are now opening up to interaction with friends and fans. Let me clarify that I am not on Twitter or any social networking sites. I simply started my official website so that I could interact with my fans. Who are your friends in the industry? Have you made any? I am busy working all the time so I don’t get time to socialize or spend quality time with any friends. When I get a day off I watch Hollywood films and our movies. I don’t get time to see my friends. When you are busy, you unintentionally part ways with friends and later realize that they have moved on with their lives. It becomes difficult to catch up with them. I do meet my friends whenever I am free but they are not from the industry. 20 December 2013 | www.visionasia.co.nz

Nandita Das’

New Spanish outing with husband Subodh

Subhash K Jha caught up with Nandita to find out about her upcoming film and got her excitedly talking about it.

The very talented Nandita Das is all set to go international. The actress, who has been lying low for some time now, recently signed a Spanish film titled ‘Traces of Sandalwood’, which will also co-star her husband Subodh. According to Nandita, the film is a story of two sisters hailing from a poor village family, who are separated in their childhood and later reunite. Nandita will be seen playing the role of a Bollywood actress called Mina, while her husband Subodh will be seen playing the role of a producer. Nandita reveals that her decision to sign the film had a lot to do with the interaction she had with the film’s writer-producer, Anna Soler-Pont. “When Anna first sent me the script through a common acquaintance in Los Angeles, I wasn’t particularly excited. However, when I met her personally in March 2012, I was quite taken in by her passion and commitment. Often a film’s impact has a lot to do with how a story is told rather than the story itself. The best part about working with Anna is her all-woman crew, which has members who are truly amazing - passionate, committed, talented and strong!” The film will be shot at Barcelona and Mumbai. Among the locations in Barcelona are the Gaudí architectonical treasures such as La

Pedrera House and the Park Güell, the Biomedical Research Institute, the downtown Ramblas, the cricket local teams and the beach. Nandita is particularly happy about the fact that shooting for the film is like a big family outing, with her husband and little son both accompanying her on the schedule. “My son Vihaan will also be coming with us to Barcelona for the shoot. He still remembers Hola and Que´ Tal from his last trip there! We are taking his nanny and the team has also ensured that he will be well taken care of.” Among other things, Nandita is also looking at the idea of remaking her very successful play ‘Between The Lines’, into a film. “A number of film directors and producers who saw the play felt that it had the potential to be made into a film. I am seriously looking at exploring the same subject through cinema,” she reveals. However, she adds that she finds very little time for creative pursuits, with her little son Vihaan, taking up most of her time, “To be honest, between Vihaan and my advocacy work on various social issues, I hardly find any time for creative pursuits. I guess I am getting back to some serious work once again with this Spanish film, which is the longest shoot since my son was born,” she smiles.

Patagonia

An awe-inspiring encounter with nature

Encompassing the southern regions of Chile and Argentina, Patagonia is a premier trekking and outdoor adventure destination. This spectacular part of the world is diverse and welcoming, and offers a unique and unforgettable travel experience to those seeking a nature-based holiday Tourist boat ride at Glacier Perito Moreno 22 December 2013 | www.visionasia.co.nz

Travel

For travelers from Australia or New Zealand, Aerolineas Argentinas or Lan Chile will fly you into Buenos Aires or Santiago. From these capital cities you can either fly or take buses to Patagonia’s gateway cities: Puerto Natales and Punta Arenas in Chile, and Ushuaia and El Calafate in Argentina. Most trekkers use bus travel to get around within Patagonia. Hiring a car is certainly possible, but unpaved roads in this region can be quite challenging in less developed areas. Summer, between November and April, is the best time to visit. Winter months are usually rainier, and temperatures can drop dramatically. The peak tourist period is January and February, so it’s a good idea to book accommodation in advance during this time. There is plenty to see and do in Patagonia: stay at an estancia (ranch) and go horseback riding, visit the stunning Perito Moreno Glacier, go whale-watching in Puerto Madryn or trek the world-renowned Torres del Paine National Park. Chill out in the peaceful coastal village of Camarones, marvel at ancient rock paintings at the Cave of the Hands (Cueva de las Manos), or join a guided white-water rafting trip down the Rio Futaleufu. Accommodation options in Patagonia range from youth hostel dormitories ($712 USD per night) to ritzy tourist hotels with correspondingly high prices. The Patagonian

version of a Bed & Breakfast is called a pensione, with prices ranging between 10 and 25 US dollars. Camping is very popular in Patagonia and sites are well maintained, with the usual facilities and even hot showers available in more popular areas. Research beforehand to see if you’ll need to bring your own small gas stove, as some parks prohibit open campfires. This natural region abounds in fresh food - try the steamed king crab, organic lamb, grilled salmon and ever-present carne asado (barbecue). Like all South Americans, Patagonians are enthusiastic meat eaters, so vegetarians may find life a bit challenging in areas away from the main tourist towns. Empanadas (small meat pies) are a cheap and delicious lunch choice. Food hygiene and water quality are generally excellent in Patagonia; bottled water is widely available too. Money in Patagonia will be either Chilean or Argentinean pesos, and it’s a good idea to always have some cash on hand, especially further away from major centers. Credit cards are widely accepted throughout the region. For cash withdrawals, ATMs will accept cards with a 4-digit pin number. If you are a nature-lover, Patagonia’s wild landscapes come very close to paradise. There is literally no other place like it on earth. As you will soon discover, in this part of South America, one visit is never enough!

Selecting the right trekking clothing and equipment is important. Patagonia is notoriously windy, and even in the heart of summer you must be prepared for unexpected weather changes. Use the layering system -merino wool thermals against your skin, a fleece pullover on top of that and a waterproof rain jacket (with hood) as your outside shell layer. Woollen socks, a beanie and some gloves will help keep the cold at bay, and a thick inflatable sleeping mat is a must for the tent. Break in your boots before you arrive. Do some hiking at home with weight on your back to ensure you’re happy with the fit. Don’t skimp on the quality of your tent or sleeping bag - these are crucial items for keeping you comfortable while exploring Patagonia’s magnificent wild places.

The sumptuous hospitality of

Bollywood

When it comes to food and delicacies, Bollywood A-listers are no different. Like the average Indian family, these celebrities believe that dining together is the best way to camaraderie. Subhash K Jha takes you through the dining experience with a list of celebrities who believe in extending their warmth and hospitality over lip-smacking delicacies.

It is truly food for thought when Bollywood personalities put their best foot forward

to entertain friends. Be it the Bachchans, filmmakers like Karan Johar, Sanjay Leela Bhansali or Sajid Nadiadwalla, veteran actresses like Shabana Azmi, Raakhee Gulzar and Zarina Wahab and contemporary actresses like Kareena Kapoor, they all have their unique food choices and styles when it comes to wining and dining with friends. The Bachchans for instance go out of their way to create the right ambience for guests when they get together for dining. If you’ve ever been invited for a meal at the Bachchans’ household, you’d know that the mood over drinks, aperitif and food is subtle and understated. Though there are excellent cooks in the house who fill up the silver thalis and katoris with unbridled gusto, Mrs. Bachchan makes it a point to personally inquire about your drink, food, coffee and the digestive spices that are served up afterwards. Music plays gently in the background as the guest is made to feel at home in what’s unarguably one of the most refined and aesthetic homes in Mumbai.

While the Bachchans invariably join their guests at the dining table, filmmaker Karan Johar takes pleasure in attending to his guests but desists from indulging in any of the rich delicacies. Though he claims he loves his mother’s Sai Bhaji (a Sindhi spinach dish), Karan is hardly seen relishing anything at a lunch party. He simply picks at his plate even as he encourages his guests to tuck into the goodies on the table. Talk of immaculate hosts and veteran actress

The best cooks in Bollywood though are veteran actresses, Raakhee Gulzar and Zarina Wahab. Zarina is a minimumfuss, maximum-impact cook.

Shabana Azmi is a perfect hostess, who scrupulously runs a home and serves great food to handpicked guests. Now that Shabana’s mother Shaukat Azmi has moved in with her daughter, the aromas of Mughlai curries and tandoori dishes from the Akhtar-Azmis’ kitchen keeps one constantly on high-alert. If you want to have a really fulfilling meal with filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali, the best

place to do so is at his home. Few people are aware that Sanjay’s mother serves the best daal-dhokla and fish fry in the world. Not many people get invited though, except a few close friends like dress designer Shabina Khan and Rani Mukherjee. The Kapoors top the list of passionate foodies in tinsel town. They like to serve and get served sumptuous meals at any pretext. Ranbir often talks about his grandma Krishna Raj Kapoor’s culinary skills. He says it’s enough reason to visit her every week. You can’t tell by his reedy frame, but Ranbir loves good food, Khau Gali being one of his favourite haunts, though he is unable to take a walk down that culinary lane for obvious reasons. Among the other fantastic hosts in the industry are actress Urmila Matondkar, whose dinner table creaks and groans with pleasure with the enticing menu. To top it, Urmila is also an excellent eater which is a rarity in Bollywood. Watching her tuck inadvertently into her plateful of sinful calories topped by deserts, you wonder how Urmila holds on to that hourglass figure of hers. In contrast, most actresses in Bollywood are frugal eaters. When you go out for a meal with Preity Zinta, Bipasha Basu or Shilpa Shetty be prepared to watch them pick at their food. Contrary to her anorexic image, Kareena Kapoor eats heartily. She orders from the menu like a queen and eats like one too, though she prefers to eat a variety of dishes taken frugally. Actor Arshad Warsi loves to cook. His homemade biryani is incredible and his biryani parties are the best in the world….handsdown. The best cooks in Bollywood though are veteran actresses, Raakhee Gulzar and Zarina Wahab. Everyone knows about Raakhee Gulzar’s outstanding abilities at the cooking stove. Unlike other expert cooks, Raakhee not only likes to cook but also loves to enjoy her meals instead of staring at her guests while they eat. Her fish and prawn curry are fingerlicking good. During her heydays Raakhee would make the most delectable fish curry for the entire unit, so much so that Mrs. Dilip Kumar and Mrs. Shashi Kapoor had to virtually keep their husbands’ culinary cravings in check.

The food is an integral part of his innate warmth. Zarina Wahab is a minimum-fuss, maximumimpact cook. Hyderabadi Baigan Bhaghare (stuffed brinjal). Another popular celebrity host is Simi Garewal who serves the most delicious and appetizing meals followed by the yummiest chocolate desserts. In fact, Simi’s desserts are a strong incentive for friends to visit her Mumbai home. While Mughlai food is a specialty with the Azmis, the biryanis at Sajid Nadiadwala and Adnan Sami’s homes are known to be an unforgettable affair. Sajid’s mother makes a biryani with rice that’s soaked in aromatic spices and yoghurt for four days before being cooked. The biryani at Adnan Sami’s goes one step further. The rice is imported from Kabul and the mutton-biryani is something to die for. Actually the calories could kill you anyway.

Bollywood’s Favourite Food & Eateries In Mumbai

I love fish dishes. The Konkan Swaad restaurant in Dadar is my favourite.

I love the Bombay Duck Raima Sen

Nawazuddin Siddiqui

My favourite food in Mumbai would be bombil fry. Being a Bengali, fried fish is my favourite. Tanushree Dutta I love the local paav-bhaji in Mumbai. It’s very different from what I get back home in Delhi. Tapsee Pannu

I love the paani-puri in Mumbai. And the fish fry here reminds me of my home cuisine in Sri Lanka. There is a pink coconut dish that also reminds me of Sri Lanka. Jacqueline Fernandez

I love the Konkan cuisine at Trishna restaurant especially the ladyfish, saltand-pepper crab and the Hyderabadi Dal which is to die for! I love seafood and vegetarian meals. They serve both with subtle flavours and a very distinct taste. The Dal they make at Trishna reminds me of the moong daal my mom used to make, with a little pure ghee and the right spices. I am very

Indian at heart

In this city it’s easy to get lost in the world of glamour but the two of us are extremely grounded. 30 December 2013 | www.visionasia.co.nz

Interview

Rural India excites me because the people there have still retained their old-worldly innocence & charm. They get excited with small things. Let’s start with your latest release Gori Tere Pyar Mein. What got you interested in the film? It was the story against the backdrop of a village and the role of a social activist that really got me interested. The character in the film strives to make this earth a better place. She is against smoking, pollution and all the wrong things. Basically she thinks she is responsible for the cleanliness of the country. The film is also about two people in love in a rural set-up and how the hero goes out of his way to build a bridge to prove his love to her.

It has been an eventful year for Kareena Kapoor Khan. Besides celebrating her first wedding anniversary, the actress has had three significant releases this year. While her films haven’t quite made headlines at the box-office, Kareena’s fan-following and her endorsements continue to be on the rise. The forthright actress recently opened up for a no-holds-barred interview about her latest release, her family and life after marriage

It is not necessary that every film that I do crosses a business of 100 crores.

How desi are you in real life? I love my country and I like shooting in the villages. I am very Indian at heart. I love ethnic wear and am very fond of Indian food. The same is true with Saif too. Rural India excites me because the people there have still retained their old-worldly innocence and charm. They get excited with small things.

best roles in my career so far and I am open to do more exciting roles. Above all, I feel it’s important to be comfortable with the people you are working with because you spend at least two to three months with the same people while working on a film. How much has life changed after marriage? Have your options of doing roles narrowed down after marriage? I don’t see why marriage should be a limitation in experimenting with roles. When I was doing Ra-One and Bodyguard, I was already in a live-in relationship with Saif. I had left my house six years back. Nothing had changed at that time too. Apart from that, I still go and meet my friends who are not from the industry.

This is the second time you worked with Imran Khan after Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu. How was the experience and how much has Imran changed as an actor? Imran and I share a great rapport with each other and also make a great pairing on screen. Apart from that, he is a very straight forward and down-to-earth person. He’s also westernized like Saif. I feel quite relaxed and comfortable in his company. Professionally, he’s grown as an actor too. We are told that the shooting of the film reminded you about your debut venture, Refugee, which was also shot in Bhuj. The film revived a lot of memories, though the city has developed considerably since I had last shot there for Refugee. I took the crew to all the places where Abhishek and I dined and stayed. Do you feel pressurized about the performance of your films at the box-office considering that your earlier films like Jab We Met and Bodyguard have crossed the 100 crore mark? Not anymore. It is not necessary that every film I do crosses a business of 100 crores. On the contrary, I get worried when such figures are written and quoted in the media. For me it is important that my films grab more eyeballs. I guess that is what every actor yearns for. Any particular films or roles you are dying to do? Interview

I have always believed in living my life to the fullest be it films, family, relationships or going on holidays. Indian society has a very different perception about a married woman. Do you feel that you should be responsible about the choice of roles you make after marriage? I have always been a responsible daughter to my parents. There is nothing more important than that. I am a daughter first and a wife after that. My professional and personal lives are two separate chapters; they have got nothing to do with each other. That is what I feel, but I can’t change what others think. We talk about progression, so let’s hope that India is progressing soon enough You have not changed over the years. What is it that has kept you grounded? I am very dedicated to my work. All the same I haven’t let it affect my life. A majority of actors lose themselves in the glamour and the steep competition they face in the industry. Everyone is so busy chasing success that there is no space for anything else in their lives. In my case, I have always believed in living my life to the fullest be it films, family, relationships or going on holidays. I have never veered from reality. The parallel life is always with me. What about Saif? Is he also as realistic in his approach to life? Saif too shares a similar point of view. Saif and I don’t believe in going to parties. Saif goes and meets his friends and professors in London even today. In this city it’s easy to get lost in the world of glamour but the two of us are extremely grounded. Few people believe this but we walk on the road even today. If we want to go to a restaurant we simply walk down to it. Which films of Saif do you like the most? Saif has always made a good choice of films be it Cocktail, Omkara, Go Goa Gone or Bullet Raja. He can never be slotted in any kind of genre and that’s his USP. He has always been very versatile when it comes to his work. What do you think is the secret to a successful married life? There is no success mantra as such. If there is love and compromise between two people, they can go a long way with each other. Ultimately all that matters is love and happiness in one another’s company. I believe in the institution of marriage because it cements your relationship in society, but what really matters is your love and the desire to spend your life with your partner. 32 December 2013 | www.visionasia.co.nz

Sonakshi Sinha has a tough time matching steps with Prabhu Deva Actress Sonakshi Sinha is quite excited about this phase in her career when she is getting an opportunity to play diverse roles. After playing a traditional Bengali woman in Bullet Raja, Sonakshi will be seen playing a street-smart and rowdy girl in her next film, R Rajkumar. “She is a bold girl who does not think twice before abusing and bashing up people if they take her for a ride,” Sonakshi reveals. However, the toughest part of the role was matching up to the steps of dance supremo, Prabhu Deva and balancing them with co-star Shahid Kapoor. Recalls Sonakshi, “We had this high energy song where I was required to dance with both Prabhu Deva and Shahid. I had already done a song with Prabhu Deva in Oh My God and I wanted to put in my best this time too. But this time it was different. You can imagine my plight - I had Shahid on one side and Prabhu Deva on the other. I simply could not match my steps with them. They literally sandwiched me.” She finally succeeded in her efforts and the outcome will be there for everyone to see when the film releases. “It was a fun experience at the end. I would not mind doing another number with them, if the opportunity arises,” smiles the actress.

Newcomer Shraddha Kapoor is making sure that she makes all the right choices in her career. The actress, who recently waved off her price for her role in Gori Tere Pyar Mein, is said to have diplomatically refused a film with Abhishek Bachchan. Instead she opted for Aashiqui-2 director Mohit Suri’s The Villain, co-starring Siddharth Malhotra. Sources reveal that Shraddha is not very keen on being seen with the older, established lot of heroes and is looking at working with the younger breed of actors like Imran Khan, Ayushmann Khurana, Siddharth Malhotra and Varun Dhawan. On the other hand, a section feels that the actress is already throwing her weight around and behaving like a star. Recently, Shraddha turned down an old contract for a music video, to which she was earlier committed, without citing any reasons for her decision.

Siddharth’s grungy look He played the suave good looking young guy in Student of the Year but now Siddharth Malhotra is looking forward to don a rugged look for his upcoming film The Villain. It is said that director Mohit Suri finalized the look after much deliberation with Ekta Kapoor. The two also went through multiple references before finalising it. In the film, Siddharth plays a tough, angst-ridden man who manages to survive on the streets. To match up to his new look, Siddharth was instructed to sweat it out in the gym, besides enrolling for shadow-boxing classes. He also had to work on his body language to bring out his aggressive side. “Sidharth will be sporting an all-new look in the film, way apart from his clean-cut look in his debut film. He will also have two different hairstyles in the film - one with short hair and the other with long hair,” reveals a source. Meanwhile, Siddharth recently admitted to being quite excited about the role. The actor feels that this role is perfectly in sync with his personality. That may not seem true, but we’ll have to wait and watch Siddharth’s aggressive side.

Incidentally, she was the first Indian to have been awarded in this category.

Her husband loved multi-cuisine food and motivated his wife to try her hand at different cuisines. For the next few years she perfected her technique, until she had mastered the art of multi-cuisine cookery, after which she shifted to Mumbai. In 1966, when her friends persuaded her to start a cooking class to share her skills with youngsters, Dalal started with six students. Before long, her classes became the talk of the town even as young impressionable women lined up to get groomed in culinary skills. That was followed by her first cook book ‘The Pleasures of Vegetarian Cooking’, which was released in 1974 and became a huge success. There was no looking back thereafter. In 1987 she bought her own office and launched Sanjay & Co. along with her son, 38 December 2013 | www.visionasia.co.nz

Sanjay Dalal. Her books were translated into Hindi, Gujarati, Marathi, Russian and Dutch too. With the help of her son, she also set up Tarladalal.com in 1988, to reach out to millions of her followers who wanted to avail of her cooking skills. According to Sanjay Dalal, his mother was also extremely tech-savvy, which ensured that she kept in touch with followers across all age-groups. “She loved to be in touch with the younger generation and was buzzing on all popular social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Word Press, Instagram, Pinterest, Picasa, and her own blog.” Sanjay points out that the Tarla Dalal app was the most recent ‘techie’ addition to her repertoire. Apart from that, her recipe videos on YouTube became a huge hit. Recalls Sanjay,

“While holidaying in Singapore in 2010, a fan asked her why she had no videos, as that was the latest way to follow recipes. As soon as she returned to India, she started making recipe videos and posting them on YouTube. That is how proactive she was!” Apart from this, Dalal also used to publish a bi-monthly magazine, ‘Cooking & More’. Her television shows ‘Tarla Dalal show’ and ‘Cook It Up With Tarla Dalal’ had a great following among men and women alike. Sanjay has now resolved to continue his mother’s legacy and bring out many more books and on-line content based on the treasures that she has left behind.

FASHION

My fashion mantra:

Being fashionable is not about wearing designer outfits. It is about the way you carry yourself with confidence. My mantra for that perfect look is ‘Be yourself and be comfortable.’ Fashion should never be imposed and one should never wear clothes that one is not comfortable wearing. Also you should stand out in the clothes you are wearing. It shouldn’t be that your clothes make a statement and you don’t.

I have a very diverse choice of clothes:

It oscillates between chic, casual and classic cuts. Sometimes, I just go for a smart mix and match combination. In the day, I prefer cottons and muslins and for the nights it’s silks or chiffons. When it comes to an occasion, I go for long gowns and dresses. Apart from that, I like my clothes to be natural and graceful.

My all-time favourite day wear:

I have a whole lot of day wear options which include ganjis, shorts and jeans. I literally live in my jeans, which is why I make it a point to stock my wardrobe with good, well-fitting jeans and white shirts.

A must-have in my wardrobe:

One outfit which is a must in my wardrobe is a well-cut little black dress which is best suited for evening wear. In fact, I would advise every young woman to make it a part of her wardrobe. I also make it a point to have a well-fitting gold blouse which I can pair off with any sari for occasions. Alternately, I pair it with black tights and a smart blazer for great evening wear.

I am not an accessory person:

I believe in using minimal accessories like a neck piece or a bangle. On other occasions, I just pep it up with a designer watch. I feel that one should never overdo accessories, lest they stick out like a sore thumb.

My favourite brands and shopping destinations:

I am not too much of a brand conscious person but I do have some favourites. For Indian wear I rely mostly on Sabyasachi and Anamika Khanna creations. For formals, I like Gauri & Nainika and their stylized outfits. Among the international high street brands I like to identify with Forever 21. I also like Jimmy Choo shoes and bags. In the international

designer brands, I prefer Elie Saab. I love his gowns - they are out of this world. My favourite shopping destination is London. It offers a great shopping experience.

My favourite fashion icon:

I would say it is Audrey Hepburn. She is beautiful, well-dressed and is a picture of pure passion on camera. She is stupendous when it comes to being a fashion icon.

My favourite perfume:

My current favourites are Narciso Rodriguez and Love by Chloe, besides the new Bottega fragrance and the range by Chloe.

My advice to youngsters:

If you really want to stand out it is important to let out your personality along with your kind of clothes. Discover your comfort level and don’t try to make a loud statement with brands. Instead, you can simply bring the best of your personality with a subtle dress sense.

Fashion should never be imposed and one should never wear clothes that one is not comfortable wearing.” www.visionasia.co.nz | December 2013 43

FACE TO FACE

The song and dance types of romantic films are best suited for youngsters. I am 43 now and I want to do story- based films.”

He is the latest addition to the breed of crossover actors who are keen on making a mark in Hollywood. Known for his performances in several Tamil and Hindi films, Madhavan is now set to explore Hollywood with the English film Night of the Living Dead: Origins. In a candid interview, the south star spoke about the film and the experience of shooting for it, besides the new phase in his career and his perception of Hollywood.

What is the secret of your weight loss?

(Smiles) I lost a lot of weight after my last Hindi film, Jodi Breakers, flopped! But then I saw Farhan Akhtar in Bhaag Milkha Bhaag and got inspired to build my physique. I felt that if Farhan could achieve that formidable body at the age of 40, I could at least try something closer at the age of 43. Also, I needed to undergo a complete transformation for a bi-lingual film. I play a boxer in that film and a boxer can never look unfit.

Tell us about your Hollywood debut. How did it happen?

I was training for my forthcoming film in USA and also getting treated for my knees. One of my friends, who lives there, asked me to come down to Los Angeles, where he introduced me to famous Hollywood director Simon West. He had told Simon about my work and we got along really well. Simon also told me how Indian actors were being sought after in Hollywood in a big way. He offered me the film soon after the screen test.

Why do you think there is a sudden rush for Indian actors in Hollywood?

I guess the West has now come to terms with the fact that Indian actors get more eyeballs than Hollywood actors. For instance, if they have an Indian actor in their television series, it gets watched in Japan, China, Singapore, Malaysia, Africa and South Africa. It also makes a big difference to the number of downloads on iPad. Few are aware that Amitabh Bachchan’s presence in The Great Gatsby also made a significant difference to the film. The number of people watching the film online or offline increased 25 times. That’s where the money is. So now they are including Indians as well as Chinese actors, which is a very smart move in my opinion.

Indian actors have often been criticized for doing minuscule and cameo roles in Hollywood films. Did you have these doubts before taking up the film? They didn’t realise that crying and yelling is the easiest thing for an Indian actor.

In fact, this was the first thought that occurred to me. Even before signing the film I told Simon that if he had a small role in mind for me, I was not very keen on it. But he showed me the script and assured me that I was one of the four main leads.

Can you tell us something about your role in the film?

The film is about a group of survivors fighting to stay alive among the living dead or zombies. I play a US Marine officer, who along with a group of people tries to fight the zombies when they attack the city of New York.

How was it working in Hollywood as a normal actor sans the superstar tag in the south?

It was difficult but it wasn’t as if I was starting from scratch. Everyone knew that I had 54 films to my credit, some of which were super hits. So there was a lot of expectation around me. I was really nervous about my first shot as it was a completely new experience on a new platform but somehow I managed to perform well. My first scene was an emotional sequence and the crew was not very sure about how I would perform but everyone was happy with the final take. They didn’t realise that crying

‘Night of the Living Dead: Origins’, produced by Simon West of ‘Con Air’ and ‘Lara Croft: Tomb Raider’ fame is a remake of the 1968 zombie film ‘Night of the Living Dead’. Madhavan will be playing the role of a U.S. marine officer who gets caught up in a zombie attack in New York City. The film is scheduled for release in the second half of 2014. www.visionasia.co.nz | December 2013 45

FACE TO FACE

and yelling is the easiest thing for an Indian actor (laughs).

How different was the experience shooting for the film?

The most fascinating part of shooting for a Hollywood film is that no actor does his own stunts! I was shooting for an action sequence where I had to run and jump from a small table and land on the floor. As soon as I ran and reached close to the table, the director said ‘cut’ and asked me to start shooting from the other side of the table. I was surprised. My agent later explained to me that actors could not do any stunts as the insurance companies did not allow them to do it. Only a qualified action stuntman was permitted to perform the stunts.

The film has been reportedly shot in 3D by the same team who did Avatar. Will special effects play a major role in the film?

As a matter of fact, the high tech effects will be the key differentiating factor for the film. This is by far the most advanced technology used in any Hollywood film. It has definitely never been attempted before, so we are all waiting to see what we end up looking like on screen. Throughout the shooting we would 46 December 2013 | www.visionasia.co.nz

wear helmets with a camera in front of our face. It was unusual and tricky. We had to follow the guidelines given so as to give the right shot.

According to Irrfan Khan, there’s no monetary gain for an Indian actor in Hollywood and it’s the experience that matters. Does that apply to you as well?

I did consider the monetary aspect and my agencies were smart enough to make a contract wherein I also got a decent remuneration. But I can be rest assured of a good share if the film does well.

Will we see you more often in Hollywood films in the future?

I am definitely not looking at shifting base to Hollywood. It’s just a temptation to do a film in a language that I am comfortable with and an opportunity to work in a story that suits me. In fact, I am dying to do a Tamil film right now. I am already feeling some withdrawal symptoms.

Coming to Bollywood, it has been a long time since you did a Bollywood film with an out and out romantic character.

Unfortunately, it is difficult to find ideal scripts. I know I have a long innings in this industry, but I cannot do what Ranbir Kapoor can. They are people from the film industry while I’m still an outsider. Apart from that, I am smart enough to understand the kind of films that I am cut out for. The song and dance types of romantic films are best suited for youngsters. I am 43 now and I want to do story- based films. When I did Tanu Weds Manu nobody had faith in the script. Nobody thought the film would work but they were all proved wrong. However, my decision to do Jodi Breakers was probably wrong. Bipasha was extremely sexy looking and I was really fat at that time.

Will we see you on television again?

Well not immediately though I started my career with television and returned as a host a few years ago. Right now my concentration and focus is on films.

Even before signing the film I told Simon that if he had a small role in mind for me, I was not very keen on it.

Stranded Evelyn Sharma boards an overnight train! We have heard episodes of the professionalism of Bollywood stars, who have braved all the odds and gone out of their way to accommodate their producers. The latest instance is of Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani actress Evelyn Sharma. Recently when Evelyn was on her way to shoot for an upcoming film, Yaariyan in Darjeeling and Sikkim, she was stranded alone with her luggage, when the flight had to be rerouted to Guwahati airport due to a bad storm. Knowing that the producer would have a tough time rescheduling location shoots, Evelyn took the brave decision of taking an overnight train from Guwahati to Siliguri to reach the sets on time. It was a great risk taking the train alone at night but the actress went ahead nevertheless, “Luckily, God sent an angel in the form of a nice person who guarded me through the journey and safely dropped me to the car which brought me to the Sikkim shoot. Without timely help, I would have been lost in Guwahati, as my phone was dead and the flight personnel did not help at all,” a grateful Evelyn recently revealed. Needless to add, her entire film crew including director Divya Khosla Kumar, wife of T-series head honcho Bhushan Kumar, was impressed with Evelyn’s bravery.

I have a

attitude towards life

Award winning executive chef and trainer Jasbir aka Jazz has caused ripples around the world with her unique approach to cooking, encompassing every nationality. She has also worked in the UK and in many top US hotels, after which she chose to settle in Auckland as Deputy Campus Principal at New Zealand Management Academies. She is currently exploring the New Zealand way of life.

Full Name: Jasbir Kaur Hobbies / passions? My passion is living life to the very best- I think far too much! We all fall into the trap of not stopping and “smelling the roses”. All the same I think it is important to strive for your dreams and not relent until you realise them. What is your success mantra? I have a philosophy of ‘I will make it happen’. Even when I am challenged, I know that I will be able achieve armed with this mantra. Who or what is your inspiration? I am inspired by my students, work colleagues and all those people I come in contact with on a daily basis. Everyone has their strengths and weaknesses and we can all help each other and inspire those around us. Your most memorable moment: I would say that it was the day I became Executive Chef of a multi-million dollar property in Miami, USA at the age of 24. I had worked extremely hard and that elevation was testament to my ethic and hard work. How important is it to fail before you succeed? I believe that one becomes more humble and aware of success through the understanding that failure is a possibility. If you fall down 100 times in the day, its 100 lessons learnt. 48 December 2013 | www.visionasia.co.nz

Name three important things in your life you can’t live without: My Christian Louboutin shoes, my favourite chef knife, and my breakfast What do you value most in life? For me, my family and family ties are extremely important - my mum and dad are a constant influence on my life. They are my strength, shield, and comfort - they have become my best friends. Favourite movie and star: The Notebook (2004) - a movie with Ryan Gosling. My favourite star is Bollywood actress, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. Favourite food: Malaysian curry, Peruvian soup and Cazuela, one of those comforting dishes you can find in most homes but rarely in restaurants; the reason these are my favourites are probably their extreme simplicity - simple, healthy food, cooked with love. Favourite holiday destination (short & long): Miami is my favourite long-haul holiday destination. I have happy memories of the melting pot on that peninsula of the United States. I love short day trips or weekends away around New Zealand particularly the virgin locations of Northland and the Coromandel. Favourite restaurant: Malaysian Sri Pinang restaurant and Ortolana Favourite sport & player: Cricket; from an Indian perspective Sachin Tendulkar is my favourite, whilst in New Zealand it is Richie McCaw! What do you love or admire in New Zealand? I obviously love the countryside, the people, their friendliness, and their desire to be part of something and the way the whole country

comes together. I love the pride in being Kiwi and the ability of the people to “muck in” and get things done in adversity. What outdoor activities do you like / how do you relax? I have recently discovered the joys of swimming. I also enjoy going to my Boot camp exercise classes early morning, my dance classes in the evenings, besides the traditional prayer and meditation - all these things help me to focus on my positive energy and strength. The craziest things you’ve ever done: Ha-ha! I can’t reveal all! Midnight picnics on the mountain and bungy jumping are some of the highlights that I can tell you! :-) You wouldn’t be caught dead: Without a spare outfit - as a chef it is still important to be looking good for any occasion! If your house was on fire and you could only grab three things what would they be? My prayer book, Louis Vuitton bag :-), and my blender (for my morning smoothie) What do you think is the secret to a good life? When you come to the edge and are about to step into the darkness, one of two things will happen. Either there will be something solid for you to stand on or you will learn to fly. Life is difficult for everyone, but if we can keep things simple, then we are well positioned to build a wonderful life and contribute to the world around us. Name one achievement that you are proud of: There are many such milestones but I have learnt that it is the simple pleasures life has to offer that are the keys to living wellgood food, friends, good health and good communication.
