t’s been said that youth is wasted on the young. I’ve always felt that one of youth’s benefits has been consistently overlooked—that you’re basically an empty vessel. Thus, everything you encounter, everything you experience, just fills you up. When I was a kid I was an absolute tabula rasa, drawn to activities that I knew nothing about. For instance, one day I decided to become a polevaulter, which, if not admirable, at least passed my ignorance standard with flying colors (pun intended). I wasn’t strong or fast, and the best trait in support of my effort was that I barely weighed 100 pounds—how hard could it be to get me airborne? Damn near impossible, as it turned out. Beyond not being able to muster the requisite speed or having the necessary upper-body strength, I also lacked the most important attribute—the vision to see myself actually soaring through the air. But my time on the track team wasn’t wasted; oddly enough, while trying to figure out a way to take wing I had a most grounding realization about the intricacies of the relay race. Relay races came in various lengths but the one that interested me was the 440. Four separate sprinters would each run 110 yards while carrying a baton that they handed off to a teammate at the end of their respective lap, within a prescribed space. Though it sounded simple enough, it was anything but. Each of the four had to have distinct abilities and temperaments. The first runner was called the “jack-rabbit.” He was the one quickest out of the blocks and most likely to get out in front of the pack. The second runner was almost as fast from the start but had to be able to exert more stamina in case he had to make up any distance that the jack-rabbit wasn’t able to establish; he was known as “the jet.” The third runner was called “the mule.” He was arguably the least skilled of the four. If the mule began his leg of the race in front he was expected to maintain his position, if not lose too much of the lead he had been given. And if he began his lap chasing the leader, it was his responsibility to leave the last runner at least within striking distance of the frontrunner. The last sprinter was the star—“the rocket”—he had to have the burst of the jack-rabbit, the power of the jet, the steadiness of the mule, and the heart to make up for whatever shortcomings they left him with. What bound them all together was the baton. Watching them, the spirit of the race was embodied in that hand-held cylinder. All of their effort and the seeming individuality of their energies were for nothing without it and its smooth transmission. Though there were various schools of how best to make the handoff, the one they used was the most extraordinary. The runner awaiting the baton would stand in his lane, looking back to see his teammate approaching, and as the back runner reached a certain place on the track, his teammate would begin running, his right hand extended backward, his fingers stretching mutely in a pure gesture of hope, determination, and acceptance. As the back runner’s rate declined slightly he would slap the baton firmly into the lead runner’s hand just as

about my own. Remembering the relay has helped me understand myself in a way that I hadn’t considered in years. Like many of us, I grew up with a keen sense of my ancestors, something brought into even sharper focus by the Greek tradition of being named after my paternal Grandfather. There is something remarkable about sharing a name and heredity with someone you’ve never met, especially after that person has died. It feels as if something more than a name is passed, and as I ponder it, all I can see is the image of the baton. The object that binds you to people you may not even have known, but it’s there, carried by one for a time, waiting to be handed to the next. And when you get it, it becomes part of you as you run your lap, and then you hand it off to be carried by another not unlike yourself. In my case, though, there’s a rub—I don’t have a son to carry on the family name. I didn’t even father a child to carry on our blood line. I am the last runner. Does that make me the rocket? That question remains to be answered, as I am still running the race, my baton firmly in hand. Unlike when I was young and couldn’t envision being able to pole vault, I see the baton now. It’s more than something just to be carried, though. It represents what I have learned and what I want to pass along. Knowing that there won’t be any one specific person designated to hand it off to doesn’t change that. What it does do, though, is keep me open to finding someone who may or may not appear in my lane, their hand extended out, as they prepare to run their own race, which is definitely Greek to me. ebruary is traditionally thought of as the month of love—romantic love, to be more specific. Hallmark and Madison Avenue have sold us on the idea that if you aren’t in a relationship on February 14, something is seriously wrong with you. There have been a few books coming out lately that are addressing the concept of being a force and source for love in your life and on the planet. Marci Shimoff’s book, “Love For No Reason: 7 Steps to Creating a Life of Unconditional Love,” is one example. So as we address non-traditional approaches to receiving more love in your life, I decided to choose a letter from a single mother, distraught over the bullying her child was receiving at school, as a lesson for us all and a valentine to those unsung heroes raising children alone: Dear Dr. Toni, My 13-years-old son recently transferred to a new school. In a meeting with his teacher I discovered he eats lunch alone every day and he isolates from the other kids. He shared with me that the kids don’t like him and they don’t pick him for sports teams. One kid bullies him daily with put-downs, instigating other kids to taunt him. I called the principal and he promised to look into it. I feel at a loss; what can I do to help my son? Distraught Mom Dear Reader: It’s not easy being the new kid on the block. Each day that your son suffers rejection, he is building the belief, “No one will ever like me” or the “I don’t fit in” syndrome. You didn’t mention whether he experienced exclusion or bullying in his other school. If so, look into professional counseling to find out if he has social anxiety and needs to develop communication and coping skills. Follow up with the school principal and find out what course of action he plans to take. Did he contact the bully’s parents or confront him/her personally? What tactics does

The buddy system has been effectual in helping teens to integrate and mitigate the anxiety of being singled out. What does your son like to do and what does he excel in? Inform his teacher(s) and assist them in finding ways he can demonstrate his strong points. He was forthcoming with you, and that trust is vital to him at this time. It focuses on zero tolerance for bullying, conflict resolution, communication skills, peer pressure, and positive solutions for teen issues. Their website is www.merrieway.com. You might want to suggest that the school purchase it, or offer to buy it for them and if the principal sees its efficacy, volunteer to support its implementation. Dear Dr. Toni: I am a 47-year-old woman who has been divorced for ten years. In that time, I have dated a lot but have not met anyone I would want a committed relationship with. Men always end up wanting to just be friends. I don’t know what it is that I am doing that takes me out of the romance category and into the buddy space. I am attractive, smart, and I have a good job but seem to have lousy luck with men. Can you help? Desperate in Los Angeles Dear Reader: You don’t give me much information to go on regarding your dating behavior. How quickly do you become intimate with them? Do you go into fix-it mode? Do you allow yourself to be vulnerable and share your feelings? Do you share what you’re passionate about or do you focus on them? Men fall in love with women who are turned on to themselves and their lives, not the men themselves. I know that sounds counter intuitive. We as women are raised to think that if we focus on men, are great in bed and are giving, that we will be loved. Wrong. Men love women who are passionate people—passionate about causes, foods they love, and experiences that fill them with awe. Feel juicy about yourself and bring that juice to every encounter, not just the man you are dating. Bring it to the dry cleaner, the bank teller, and your co-workers. The more love you feel about yourself spills out to others, and they respond to you in kind. Start out with every man as a friend, but not as a buddy. The more you make it clear to them that you just want to be friends and are dating others as well and listen more and talk less, you build a powerful feminine containment. Practice enjoying you while you’re on a date and see what happens. Readers, may you all experience more love in your lives by being loved—this month, and for the rest of your lives. loyd Wright is referring to the building of the “New City of Mentalphysics,” the “City of Joy,” a creative vision and partnership he had with Edwin John Dingle, now known as Ding Le Mei, to over 220,000 students of the Science of Mentalphysics worldwide. (Ding means “Great Man,” a sign of highest respect, given to him by his Master Teacher Padmasambhava.) Being an orphan, Ding Le Mei vowed that his new city would include an orphanage, as well as a nursing home, organic farm, housing for the homeless, spiritual centers, a school, and a variety of classes and teachings. As he explains in his own words, “You know that from boyhood, being myself an orphan, I ever entertained the hope of building and maintaining an orphanage and school for those angels of the world who have known no mother’s love, no father’s guidance. For many years, long, long before Mentalphysics was born, this ideal came from God. With the years it grew. With the advent of Mentalphysics, and consequent enlargement of my faith, it expanded, as most of my beloved students are aware. To such an extent was the vision given to me that it finally came to embrace the culminating mission of building the ideal city of the world.” Ding Le Mei risked his life on a mapping expedition and spiritual quest across China in the early 1900s as he entered Tibet. In his quest for spiritual knowledge he became one of the first Westerners to enter a Tibetan Monastery where he was recognized as a highly evolved soul. There he discovered the mysteries of Asia and India, secret wisdom passed along from master to pupil, from generation to generation, for countless ages, beginning, perhaps, six or seven thousand years ago. On November 7, 1927, Mentalphysics was born, and the prophecy of Edwin J. Dingle’s Master—that he would one day become a great teacher—was fulfilled. Ding Le Mei combined the spiritual wisdom of the East with religious knowledge of the West to form a Super Yoga. The teachings of Mentalphysics combine ancient universal truths, breathing exercises, diet control, recognizing and working with one’s individual chemistry, exercises, affirmations, and meditation. New students are introduced to the universal laws which, if followed, are believed to lead to mastery of oneself and all of Life. In the original teachings, and in a step-by-step manner, Ding Le Mei shares 21 years of knowledge given to him in the Temples of Asia. He says, “It is not just information; we are building a new consciousness.” It is a way of life, of deeper awareness, and methods for purifying the mind (in Thought) and body (in radiant health), which have been used for thousands of years. The 8 Key Breaths, unique Lessons, Meditations, and Affirmations have been the means of revolutionizing the lives of hundreds of thousands worldwide. As these teachings are sacred and rare, they were closely guarded for those who are seekers of Truth. These precious teachings and wisdom of the ancients are preserved in Ding Le Mei’s “Science of Mentalphysics” or “Brahma Vidya” (the Ancient Secret), as it is called in India. When Dingle arrived in the Mojave Desert and discovered this pristine piece of desert land, he said he witnessed a great light from above and was told that this was indeed the place to build the Institute and V I S I O N M AG A Z I N E

In 1941 the Mentalphysics Spiritual Teaching and Retreat Center was dedicated in Yucca Valley (now Joshua Tree). Dr. Dingle and Frank Lloyd Wright designed the Institute based upon the principles of Mentalphysics as well as sacred geometry. In alignment with the principles of the Mystic Seven in all spiritual undertakings, the original plans were to include seven centers: The Caravansary of Joy; Haven of Gratitude; Temple of Reverence; Abode of Breath; Castle of Sound; Mansion of Light; and Manor of Silence. Frank Lloyd Wright designed Dr. Dingle’s home, the Ridge Cottages, Water Terrance Dining Hall, and the Caravansary of Joy, a 700-foot-long structure with motelstyle rooms and a meeting hall. His son, Lloyd Wright, completed the buildings. Ding Le Mei passed from this life in 1972, but his dreams of the New City are very much alive today in the hearts and minds of the hundreds of thousands of students of Mentalphysics. The center is finally completing construction on the swimming pool and warm pool that were part of Dingle’s original design; plans are

The center is used today not only by students of Mentalphysics, but also by many individuals and retreat groups seeking a quiet, peaceful place for spiritual contemplation and training. The Institute of Mentalphysics also offers the Breath of Life class, covering the 8 Key Breaths. For more information, please visit www.mentalphysics.net or www.jtrcc.org.

Spirit Present in Consciousness Always A Conversation with Katherine Torres
by Sydney L. Murray
Knowledge is power.
I have always loved to learn and recently had the chance to talk to the renowned teacher Katherine Torres who has started a School of Divinity called SPICA. Torres told me that Spica is the brightest star in the Virgo constellation and that this constellation looks like the virgin. This bright star is like a cord in her hand. It represents the divine stem and then the divine mother and the abundance to the world. Torres said, “For us, Spica Way of Light is a foundation looking to honor the divine feminine principle of the universe.” Vision Magazine: Can you give us a little bit of your background? Katherine Torres: I am a person that has talked to and seen spirits since I was a little girl. I didn’t know that other people didn’t. I hear people’s thoughts and feelings a lot, and I can watch people talking together and couldn’t understand why they couldn’t hear what each other were saying [in their thoughts]. I was 19 and I had a mystical experience in my church. I was raised Catholic; I really felt the presence of God. It wasn’t just angels and loved ones from the other side, it was a higher

presence. When I went to my priest to ask him about it, he tried to brush me off and then tried to tell me I was insane. I thought that something incredibly wonderful had happened. I thought that all priests talked to God directly. In our adult catechism classes there was a younger priest. I went and approached him and he looked scared to death and he wouldn’t answer. So I was talking to my sister-in-law and I was saying, something is happening here and I have to talk to someone. Within a few months she had a baby die of crib death. That same month, since the baby wasn’t baptized, the priest wasn’t going to give the baby a mass and he told them the baby was going to live in limbo. I said God wouldn’t do that. My sister-in-law began to have visitations of the baby’s spirit. She went to a psychic who told her to come and learn how to communicate with her baby. I said, “I will go with you.” That’s when I learned that other people saw and felt like I did and that there was a name for it. I went on a greater search. I was within a spiritual church and then moved into the Unity philosophy. I always knew that I wanted to serve God and therefore serve humanity. I always wanted to teach people how to communicate like I did. Back in my 20s I was already working with people. 40 years ago, there was a big pop into a larger region of consciousness for me and a larger communication base.

m i n d s t a t e s I actually channeled an entity named Malachi. He’s been an incredible teacher for me and thousands of people over the years. I am blessed by a gift. I still believe everyone can experience what I have. VM: What led you to create the University of Divinity? KT: For years I have taught different classes. People would ask, how do I get credit for this? Then in 2006 one of my students came up and handed me a $5,000 check and said, “Start your non-profit, and start your school now.” So, I gathered a few people who were spiritually inclined that would really come with heart content and a sacred intent to work on that path. We sat down and looked at what we would do. My first thought was to offer an educational program that would bring ministerial status to people who are doing readings and spiritual counseling. We started doing the paperwork for the state of California and for the Federal status. We had a woman on our team who has worked in corporations where they go through and check on nonprofit organizations and make sure they are compliant. She came back and said, “Not
only are you compliant, you are able to offer degrees as The University of Divinity.” When students come to the school that first year, the curriculum is metaphysics, mysticism, and self-evaluation in preparation to really know themselves. At the master’s program they go through a whole year of studying mysticism and spiritual counseling and understanding their spiritual boundaries. VM: How do you think putting it into the educational context has changed the way you look at your teachings? KT: When I taught in my home or in a bookstore or wherever, it’s in a more relaxed state, here is the information, use it as you will, gain what you can, ask any question you want. But when we put all of this in the framework of a university, then a student doesn’t play with it. You are really a student now, so you not only have to come to class and study what is designed for the class, but you have to test out. You have to prove that you have that knowledge. So it feels extremely professional, versus that relaxed environment of shared wisdom. One of the advisors was speaking to me the other day about a student who has completed a class. She asked, “How am I going to really evaluate her because these classes are much more subjective?” I answered, “Yes, but you can tell by the way she continued on page 40

It is a good year for family, the arts, and diplomacy. It is an especially good year if you were born in the year of the Rabbit (1927 and every 12 years after that) or in one of the most compatible years: sheep; dog; and ox (1931, 1934, 1937, respectively, continuing in cycles of 12). hardships of 2010, people will tend to think too much about money (symbolized by metal). Heaven (the spiritual side of life) and Earth (economy and environment) will not be in harmony. The economy will be subject to up and down swings, driven by greed. Metal also symbolizes weapons and, among countries, the United States. This suggests new or continued military conflict. In terms of health, metal is the lungs; wood is the liver. These organs will need extra attention, especially if you have respiratory problems such as allergies and asthma. Healthy breathing, a clean pollution-free environment, and a good diet are essential in maintaining good health in 2011. San Sha (“Three Killing Forces”): For every year, there is a direction of bad luck (San Sha), including disasters, accidents, and financial loss. This year, the killing forces are in the West. That means it is best not to travel west, buy a house this year with a main door facing west, do home renovation on the west side of your home, or disturb the ground by digging holes in the west side of your property. The latter would disturb the Lords of the Soil (Tu Di Gong and his wife, Tu Di Po), who rule prosperity and the well-being of ancestral spirits. In general, be careful regarding any phenomena associated with the West. You can neutralize the San Sha by placing three bamboo plants or representations of bamboo plants (paintings or sculptures) in the western part of your home. Three statues of the Chinese unicorn may also work. Wu Huang (“The Five Yellow Sick Forces”): This year, illness is associated with the East. Again, don’t travel east, buy a home with an east-facing main door, add a new eastern section to your home, etc. Neutralize the Wu Huang with a small altar in the east part of your home. Place symbols of your spirituality—a statue, a holy book, candles, flowers—on the altar and offer prayers for peace and health. Tai Sui: Tai Sui is a star that exists in a spiritual dimension, invisible to the eye or to the telescope. This star moves opposite to Jupiter and is sometimes considered Jupiter’s shadow. Each year, this star oppresses the fate of certain natal signs. In 2011, Tai Sui may cause difficulties for people born in the year of the Rabbit, Rooster, Rat, and Horse (1927, 1933, 1924, 1930, respectively, and multiples of 12). If you were born in one of these years, you may wish to burn a Tai Sui talisman on Chinese New Year’s Day or go outside and offer incense and prayers for a harmonious and lucky year. This year, Tai Sui also resides in the East. Don’t renovate in the eastern part of your home or business and be very careful about digging or disturbing the ground in the East.
c u l t u r e Auspicious Directions (for travel, education, romance, and general good luck): South and Southwest. Averting Misfortune, Preserving Good Fortune: A Taoist Ritual The easiest way to create blessings for the coming year is by offering incense on an altar. Light three incense sticks, symbolizing Heaven, Earth, and Human. Extinguish the flame with sweeps of your hand, rather than by blowing on the sticks. Place the three incense sticks, one at a time, in an incense burner. Then say in Chinese and/or English: Dao you xin xue Xin jia xiang quan Xiang re yu lu Xin cun di qian Chen ling xia pan Xian pei lin xian Jin chen guan gao Jing da jiu tian
Then bow three times, either by bending at the waist or by sitting back on your heels and touching your head lightly to the ground. In both Taoism and Buddhism, bowing is not a way of supplicating to a deity, but rather a physical expression of yielding to a mystery—the all-pervading Tao. Kenneth S. Cohen is a world-renowned Taoist initiate and Master of both Tai Chi and Qigong. This winter he is offering workshops, classes, and consultations in the San Diego area. www.qigonghealing.com. Aries: World (4 of Swords) 3/21 - 4/19 Give yourself a rest this month. Rather than rushing around, take opportunities to relax. There will always be obligations and tasks to complete, but if you’re frazzled, you won’t perform at your best. Stress is probably the number one cause of illness and mental fatigue. If you’ve been dealing with either of these, consider creating new habits to support your well-being. Whatever problems you’re facing right now will be solved by looking within. Although the outcome may not always match your expectations, the conflict is quieted by taking time for reflection. Taurus: Empress (5 of Wands) 4/20 - 5/21 The challenges you face this month will teach you to be more adaptable. Are you feeling like you’re striving, only to feel more immobilized? Do you feel restricted and doubtful? This frustration has a message relating to your creative expression. Ask yourself how what you do reflects who you are. Forget the petty obstacles and focus on more creative solutions. Have pride in your talents the way a mother dotes on her child. Give in to your conflicts by creating harmony with your surroundings—even those annoying coworkers deserve your compassion. As you become more patient, life becomes easier to manage. Gemini: Star (8 of Wands) 5/22 – 6/21 You will be swept off your feet this month as your heart energy looks for an outlet. For those who have recently braved an emotional storm, calmness is within reach. Be kind to yourself and trust that you have developed new inner resources. With confidence restored, your enthusiasm inspires new energy and brilliant ideas. Get in touch with your deepest desires, then find ways to manifest them. Love is in the air, just in time for Valentine’s Day! Take a risk and express your feelings for that special someone. You may be pleasantly surprised. Cancer: Wheel of Fortune (6 of Wands) 6/22 – 7/22 Lady Luck turned the wheel and landed on your number! However, this is not a stroke of random luck as much as a personal victory. Something you’ve put in motion has earned you a moment of glory. On a deeper level, this breakthrough will help you change the patterns of your behavior, thereby changing your fate. You’ll reap the most benefits from this change by staying as present as possible in your daily life. Don’t be dismayed by old fears or negative beliefs; there’s no room for blaming now. Be proud—you are the architect of your destiny! Leo: High Priestess (7 of Wands) 7/23 – 8/23 It takes courage to face your fears and wisdom to study them. The problem occurs when they seem so nebulous. You know you should do something, but you feel paralyzed by doubts, insecurities, and vague unknowns. It’s an unsettling feeling when you realize you’ve acted in ways that conflict with your integrity; however, if you’re not in touch with your inner self, you have little access to this discernment. Release the need to be understood by others and learn to understand yourself—your moods, feelings and desires. Cultivating trust in yourself will help you handle the toughest situations. Virgo: Chariot (4 of Cups) 8/24 – 9/22 Action for the sake of action is not always the best use of your energy. It can sometimes be a way to distract you from your feelings. Although this month is about movement, it must be controlled and deliberate movement. Don’t let apathy be the cause of premature action. Sit with your feelings long enough to hear the message. If you’re honest with yourself, you’ll realize that endeavors undertaken for the sake of ego gratification are shallow, only yielding shortterm benefits. The goal of this movement should be self examination—a rich journey within.
Libra: Justice (3 of Pentacles) 9/23 – 10/23 Every thought, action, and deed has an effect and leaves an imprint. Keeping this golden rule in mind, be conscious of what you expend your energy on. Creating balance is a guiding principle in your life; this month, in particular, your ability to do so will be tested. At work, you may encounter several chances for self-development. Create ways of working in harmony with others, even if you don’t like them. Your actions will be scrutinized if you’re not careful. Finances and job opportunities become more plentiful and require more responsibility. Remember to stay grounded. Scorpio: Hierophant (Knight of Pentacles) 10/24 – 11/22 It’s one thing to know right from wrong, but another to actually walk the talk; theory without practice is shallow. As you apply your own moral code to life, you become an example to others. The importance of personal integrity is for your own benefit because, in reality, you’re the only one who knows your true intentions. Do not be so concerned with what others think; focus on your own actions and make amends when necessary. A slow and dedicated pace will help you through the month. Refrain from overreacting and be patient with those who are less aware. Sagittarius: Death (2 of Wands) 11/23 – 12/21 Change and a feeling of restlessness are in the air. Something’s about to happen; what that is depends on the choices you make. The contradiction, however, is that you must harness your personal power while allowing yourself to surrender to the experience. An alliance you thought was beneficial will show signs of dishonesty. Rather than fighting this, let it be. You’ve been limiting your selfexpression in order to keep the peace. Sometimes to see yourself as you truly are, you must give up the things you’re attached to. Another opportunity will present itself when you’re free from baggage. Capricorn: Lovers (Queen of Cups) 12/22 – 1/20 The urge to merge is both a biological and spiritual phenomenon. By relating to another you become more aware of yourself. While love is often assigned as the motivating factor, there’s much more to it. Pay attention to what you feel emotionally triggered by, either positive or negative. You’ll notice that you’re more attracted to traits you’re lacking. Relationships are a choice, and who you choose to have in your life speaks volumes about you. How you allow someone to treat you also reflects how you feel about yourself. Take stock of the relationships in your life and notice which ones are healthy. Aquarius: Tower (Page of Cups) 1/21 – 2/18 A flash of insight can start a chain reaction when what you believed to be true is not only challenged, but proven to be false. It’s natural to assume that core beliefs are true, especially when there’s a personal history attached. You may be devastated when you find out that a cherished dream is no longer within reach. This shock will likely cause a feeling of disorientation. But rather than emotionally detaching from the experience, trust your Higher Self to handle the situation. Through the vulnerability of this experience, you will gain new levels of trust, both in yourself and others. Pisces: Moon (Ace of Cups) 2/19 – 3/20 Are you ready to take the plunge? This month promises an ocean of emotion. The dilemma, however, is that you won’t be able to see clearly. Either you’re blinded by illusions of fantasy or bewildered by confusing emotions. The goal and paradox is to find balance through this without denying yourself the experience of being caught in the ecstasy. However, it’s important to lose yourself from time to time because it opens your heart to the experience of pure love. You achieve balance by expressing yourself and reflecting as appropriate. Too much dreaminess could lead to delusion.

c u l t u r e we can activate the innate wisdom of the body, a state of wholeness that exists as a blueprint within every human being. Wisdom Healing Qigong came into being 30 years ago in China. Dr. Pang, a doctor of both traditional Chinese medicine and Western medicine, studied with 19 Qigong grandmasters, becoming a grandmaster himself. He combined Verdon-Roe these traditional Qigong methods and developed Wisdom Healing Qigong. Eventually Dr. Pang let go of medicine altogether in his treatments, using just Qigong. Several times he was accused of practicing magic and was jailed. He renounced being a doctor and opened a huge center where people with so-called incurable conditions flocked. Many had exhausted all other options. Each student—they were no longer called patients—was diagnosed using a battery of conventional medical tests on arrival and again four weeks later, after they had participated in intensive daily practice of Dr. Pang’s Wisdom Healing Qigong. The health of 95 percent of the students improved, with 35 percent being completely Mingtong cured, with no sign of the original disease. Wisdom Healing Qigong was recently acknowledged by the Chinese government as the most effective form of Qigong for healing. Western medicine usually focuses on the physical: surgery and pills. This is only 4 percent of the universe. We have access to the other 96 percent through energy medicine. Once I realized—beyond just a concept—I am an energy being, that mind and body are inseparable, my life changed. No more hoping for a doctor to fi x my health or for someone or something external to make me happy. An ancient Chinese statement of wisdom eloquently describes the disadvantage of passively waiting for help: “You can stand on a mountaintop with your mouth wide open for a long time before a roast duck flies into it.” Through Wisdom Healing Qigong I learned that I was the one I’ve been waiting for. I can take full responsibility for myself. I have a choice in every minute, not necessarily about what happens to me and my world, but certainly about how I react, what I do with my mind. Instead of waiting until I got healthy again to be happy or despairing that I ever would, I could cultivate a state of inner happiness that was not dependent upon the circumstances of my life. In fact, cultivating happy energy can be an effective way to heal, as Norman Cousins demonstrated so well with his laughter therapy. Certainly being happy is the quickest way to attract a lot of friends. People love being around happy people, and having all that loving energy around also helps the healing process. My Wisdom Healing Qigong teacher laughs like his three-year-old boy. He exudes happiness, and it’s contagious! Master Mingtong Gu goes by Mingtong—
The Miracle of Qigong:
or twenty years, I struggled with chronic Lyme disease. The last couple of years were particularly challenging—itchy rash all over me, pain in the joints, severe fatigue, and really bad bouts of bronchitis that lasted months. Some days I couldn’t get out of bed. My health was seriously deteriorating and I thought my life was pretty much over. by Vivienne At the grand age of 60 I discovered the medicine of the future! “Discovered” is a bit misleading since this medicine has been around for 5000 years. Really, I’m a latecomer! I was introduced to Wisdom Healing Qigong by a friend of mine who had suffered from chronic fatigue for years. She miraculously changed before my eyes. She claimed it was the form of Qigong she was doing. I started doing the same practice and I began transforming, too, physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. Physically, I have much more energy. No more utter exhaustion or pain. I used to catch every bug going around. Recently, I noticed a tickle in my throat. I blew my nose a few times for the next two days and that was it. Emotionally, I feel more balanced, less reactive, and much happier. I’ve tried to be a positive person—now it’s effortless. Mentally, I am learning that I always have a choice in how I think about things. And I’m learning that how I think about things is a strong indicator of how they will turn out. It takes a bit of training, but a healthier, more abundant, loving, peaceful life certainly is worth the effort to me. And spiritually, it’s as if all the practices I have done throughout my life were leading me to this. This technology is the quickest way I’ve found to experience the Source, the One energy that is expressed in all creation. It takes me Home. Qigong means “cultivating energy.” Indigenous peoples and mystics recognized that everything is energy. Scientists looking under powerful microscopes found that at highly magnified levels all forms are made up of vibrational energy. Thanks to quantum physics, the Western world is now waking up to the fact that only 4 percent of the universe is form and visible. The other 96 percent is formless and invisible. But it is not empty. It is a great seething ocean of vibrating energy that is always available. Beyond eating, drinking, and breathing, we are constantly exchanging energy with the universe, whether we are aware of it or not. In Qigong, when we consciously connect to the invisible energy and imagine bringing it back as light into our bodies, we increase our life force. The bridge between formlessness and form is the mind, not our ordinary, everyday linear mind that is conditioned to interact with our world only through the five senses. When we close our eyes and use our imagination, we access another part of the brain that recognizes that physical and non-physical energies are the same. A blockage in the flow of energy in the body manifests as disease. Whether you are suffering from cancer or a headache, you do the same Qigong practice, expanding energy out to the universe and bringing it back in, thereby accessing life force and creating its free flow throughout the body. Qigong teaches us that it is thought that gives energy structure. So our beliefs and the stories we have about ourselves take part in the creation of our physical bodies. With our intention

Integrative Medicine for the 21st Century: a Conversation with Janette Gray, M.D. from the Center for Health and Wellbeing
by Sydney L. Murray
T
here is so much discussion about health care these days and at times it seems almost impossible to get quality health care that is preventative. I was excited to speak to Dr. Janette Gray from the Center for Health and Wellbeing in San Diego. Prevention is the best cure and more and more purveyors of Western medicine have worked to create a synthesis of the best of Western and alternative therapies. Dr. Gray is that kind of medical doctor.
Vision Magazine: How did The Center for Health and Wellbeing come about? Dr. Janette Gray: I was trained in traditional primary care medicine. I have always been interested in a general approach to people’s care, meaning even though I studied internal medicine, I studied that because I wanted adult medicine. So I picked primary care internal medicine. I went to UCSF (University of California, San Francisco), which was great training, and did my residency at Scripps and UCSD (University of California, San Diego). After my first position at the Center of Women’s Medicine in Mission Valley I realized it was a question of demand, from what the patients were wanting. I realized patients weren’t getting what they needed and wanted. Then I asked the question, “Why?” And it evolved from there and exploring that whole mind body connection and looking at the fact that Western medicine is so disease oriented by focusing on a pill or a procedure. What about when you have patients where their labs look normal and yet they have fatigue or bloating and they aren’t sleeping well? Then you have medical practitioners who says, “Nothing is wrong with you, your labs are fine.” So then, these people would maybe go to an acupuncturist, masseuse, or some kind of healer that would then give that person possibly herbs or lifestyle changes, or some acknowledgement of a little hope. So what is really working? Is it just human contact, is it someone listening, is it compassion, is it the acupuncture, or is it the herbs? Maybe it’s a little of all of it.
V I S I O N M AG A Z I N E
Here at the Center we have internal medicine and family practice, which is considered primary care medicine. We also have Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT) acupuncture, chiropractic, massage, naturopathic medicine, and podiatry. So it is really head to toe! I was always building a circle out from the traditional medical model. That is how we have evolved into this group of different modalities. This is where the IV or Infusion Therapies (intravenous) come into play, as they add an element of health that we didn’t have before. Here at the Center for Health and Wellbeing we have this core of experience, working with our patients for over 10 years. People have been coming here for a long time and are using a lot of the different modalities and the integrative approach. We have benefited from the collaboration that comes with each of us (the practitioners) being a part of this entity have a decade of a community and now we are starting a new cycle of patient education. We have cooking classes, Wine Women and Hormones evenings and so much more. VM: Please tell me about the Infusion Therapies. JG: Infusion therapy is really interesting because it’s getting nutrition into the bloodstream. It is available to every cell in your body. You don’t have to wonder if you are digesting properly, or if you have irritable bowel, inflammatory intestines, you know that this therapy is getting into the bloodstream So that is the first level. The second level is, what are you treating? So people we work with have chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, dehydration, or they may be recovering from an illness or surgery and will benefit from this therapy. If you are pre-operative or post-operative we offer a really high dose of Vitamin C (for reconnective tissues). The medical community has used silvadene for burns; we’ve used gauze that is soaked in silver, which we use for wound care. These products have been used for 40 years or longer. And yet colloidal silver, or IV silver solution is considered to be an alternative medicine. All we are doing is getting that silver into the vein and into the cell. We want to take treatments to the highest level we can and yet we are pushing the envelope in that we are offering treatments that aren’t standard of care, but when someone can get immediate results, that is exciting. I have been treating patients with poor circulation or ulcers or sores on their legs which can take forever to heal. I have had patients that have had accelerated healing with these types of conditions by getting the medicine where it needs to

go. If someone comes in with the flu it can be over in three days with our flu treatment. Because we have an IV we can do treatments quickly, effectively, and safely without a lot of side effects. I think that is exciting. There is reliability and comfort in knowing that there is medical oversight. VM: What would be some conditions that people can come to you for? JG: One of my specialties is optimal aging and looking at how aging affects your hormonal system. I utilize bio-identical hormones to balance hormones so that our clients can actually maintain a more youthful countenance for a considerably longer period of time. That is mostly in the 40s and on, the baby boomer group. In your 20s, mental health and muscular skeletal issues can be looked at. If we could really educate people on stress management, problem solving, the way to deal with life in general, any addictive behaviors, and advocate sensible conscious living such as diet, then the 30s would be different. A lot of what we do is clean up (from the past). Then at 30 you are continuing taking care of those issues, but now maybe dealing with babies, the stresses of more responsibilities, or maybe you are starting to gain weight; that’s where the thyroid comes in. Also maintaining your well-being and mental health is always important. Then in your 40s women may be affected by peri-menopause and changing hormones. Again if you can maintain ideally, your body, your mind, your spirit, it’s a whole different life. At every age you can address all of these issues. For example, I saw a woman who has pretty bad depression and she finally went on disability. So [as] part of our interdisciplinary approach after her medical evaluation, I am matching her with a therapist and an acupuncturist. We will ask her to look at her diet and deal with empowerment with her lifestyle in general. That’s how, as a team, we are helping her. In every age I try to connect people into the system. If they’re in their 20s we might do basic lab works just to pick up on some hereditary issues, like high cholesterol or anemia that you don’t want to find out about 10 or 20 years later. Then the physical of course, a pap smear, breast exam, and we look at the skin. That is the window to the naturopath to talk about nutrition and supplements, to peak their interest. That is where you have the chance to get them [clients] empowered to know that they are in control of their body. The 30s is about how much stress is in your life, are you taking care, are you slowing down enough to be aware of your life and choices. Also the awareness that if you come more toxic as you age, you have symptoms of depression, mood swings, and things that you don’t know where they are coming from. Although a lot of them can be psychologically sourced, many of them can be physically sourced. So, plugging them into practitioners, education and awareness, the earlier the better. Then each decade has its special [health issues to look at], again at certain ages; at
h e a l i n g a r t s 40s you do more breast cancer awareness, and in men at 50 is the prostate cancer awareness. That is early detection, not prevention, which is an important point. The center has a lot of advanced testing, so you can have a test to see if you have food allergies. People may be experiencing symptoms of depression or poor digestion and it’s really because they have never been tested for food allergies and may have them. VM: From your experience, when people come into the center how do their lives change? JG: It is really about prioritizing and asking what is realistic. Because a lot of times I can have an ideal scene but I try to differentiate between priorities and realities. So losing weight is important, but sleeping and stress reduction is important as well, because if you don’t take care of that, weight loss could be more difficult. I try to find a common denominator and try not to overwhelm the client and get a package together so they feel they have a plan. It’s a balance. I like to say. “I have more tools in my tool box.” We have electronic medical records, so I get information from different providers so there is one file and we can work together. We have case conferences in a place where their therapies are all under one roof. I want people to be fearless in the sense of self-preservation. Angel Wisdom:
A Conversation With Doreen Virtue by Sydney L. Murray
D
oreen Virtue is such a bright spirit. Her joy in living is so apparent across the phone lines. Virtue has offered her teachings and her wisdom for decades and has changed so many people’s lives. I have always thought angels are all around us. After speaking with this angel expert
V I S I O N M AG A Z I N E
I am more sure of that than ever.
Vision Magazine: Could you tell us about the different types of angels? Doreen Virtue: There is a whole city of the choirs of angels that really are beyond our human experiences. The ones we interact with mostly are the guardian angels. These are non-human, egoless beings that are with each of us. These are personal guides that we call angels who are with us from before we were us, who help us to come up with a life path and are with us for every moment of our lives until we transition back to the after life. Then there are the archangels. They are impersonal because they can be with many people simultaneously. They are the specialists. The guardian angel would be analogous to your personal family, and the archangels would be analogous to you calling on a specialist such as an appliance repairman or a mechanic. They are specialists that can help you and stay there if you want, but they also help other people. I concentrate on the arch and guardian angels, because their work seems to be more practical and asks, “How can I help this person have a better morning? Or type of work?” VM: How can someone access these angels? DV: The archangels are available to everyone that calls on them. Anyone that has been in traditional Catholicism works with archangels very closely. They would have seen archangel Michael, for instance. The rest of us that have not been raised with archangels call on them because we have free will and they won’t impose themselves on us. The archangels, like ascended masters, are great spiritual beings that want to help us personally and globally, which they have taught me is one in the same. As we each evolve into peaceful beings that is our greatest contribution to world peace. For instance, Raphael helps with health. I know that where you live [San Diego] there is a high percentage of people that are healers, and he works with people who do healing work. Everything from guiding them [in] their own personal healing practices and helping them during the healing work itself. He is absolutely remarkable. In my studies of archangel Raphael, there are people who I’ve met and talked with that have had instant healing with serious diseases and conditions working with him. Again, you have to call on him. This has been my whole life’s work [to teach how to do this]. Just like archangels, guardian angels are there to help you, and their presence is calming, like having a really calm person next to you is helpful. It’s that calm and wise person with advice that will offer it if you ask. You can go deeper by asking for guidance and you can just think the thought. It’s more like a sports team where you pass the ball back and forth, as teamwork is the analogy. I meet a lot of people who come from fundamentalist backgrounds who are worried about bothering the angels or asking for something trivial. Whatever brings you peace, they are happy to help with, with the knowledge that they might help you in a much different way than you expect. You don’t tell them how to help. You just ask them to help you with this issue and then you get out of the way because they know, from the

infinite divine creative source, the best way to help you. VM: Do angels react differently with us through the generations? DV: I think so. The reason is that children see angels naturally. I did, and I feel that people naturally have the ability to connect with angels; we are born with that. Then depending on how we feel about it and how our parents react to it, we can keep that gift open or we can shut it down. I feel children, especially babies, when they are not focusing, they are looking at angels or departed loved ones. I’ve got so many stories I have collected where children with no formal training are describing Raphael and Michael perfectly and including their names and having full conversations with these angels. I think that there has been an evolution where parents are more open to their kids talking to angels, where it used to be frowned upon to have your kid talk to an invisible friend. There are people our age who were put into mental health hospitals. One man I met was put into a mental health hospital in San Diego County, even in open-minded Southern California 20 or 30 years ago where talking to angels would have been considered something that parents would be concerned about. Today many parents are proud of it. They are posting it on Facebook: “Look what my daughter received from archangel Michael.” That is the big difference with the parents’ evolution. VM: When was your first experience with angels, and how have they affected your life? DV: I actually saw them as a child. One of the reasons [was] I grew up in a metaphysical household. My mom was a Christian Science Practitioner and my dad was a metaphysician. My dad quit his engineering job when I was 6 years old because he didn’t want to wear a tie and work in the corporate world. We were kind of early hippies. This was in the ’60s. They started using visualization and affirmation to get our needs met. My dad needed a new car because our car broke down so he went out and got a Hot Wheels model, put it on top of the TV, and would have my brother, mom, himself and I look at that model and visualize it in the driveway. So this is my childhood. I grew up with all of these things that we openly talk about. But at the time, in the ’60s, it was a really different period. So other kids, as I would talk about this, would tease me a lot. I was really sensitive because I wanted to fit in. The point of all this is that I was really lonely as a child. I felt very much apart [from other kids] and misunderstood. So being alone with myself continued on page 46 V I S I O N M AG A Z I N E

ecently I received a press release about a woman who was presenting at the American Holistic Medical Association’s meeting this past January in Irvine, California. I was compelled to find out more about Dr. Gladys who said prior to this event, “I am thrilled the Holistic Medical Association is giving me the opportunity to speak about Living Medicine. It is a different way of thinking about things. When you start thinking differently it’s amazing; it’s a rephrasing of illness. And it’s amazing what manifests.” Dr. Gladys Taylor McGarey is the kind of person who epitomizes a true heroine to me. She has devoted her life to being of service and is actively involved in living and learning at 90 years young.
Dr. Gladys Taylor McGarey: A Living Inspiration by Sydney L. Murray
Vision Magazine: How did you initially receive the title, Mother of Holistic Health? Gladys Taylor McGarey, M.D.: It just kind of happened. I think it started because in 1968 we had our first medical symposium which we then had for 20 years. [It] was an annual symposium in which those interested were beginning to pull together people who were thinking along the line of holistic medicine. Then around 1976 there were five of us who met at Everett Loomis’ conference center in California. I was the only woman there and we got the idea that we needed to start an organization, so from that, the American Holistic Medical Association started, and from there it just grew. I don’t know who thought up the title of Mother of Holistic Medicine, but somehow or another the title started and stuck. VM: What prompted you to become a Medical Doctor? GM: I received my medical degree in 1946. My parents were both osteopaths and were medical missionaries in India. Also my Dad was an MD. At that point I had planned to go back to India as a missionary, and they were not taking osteopaths, so I figured I’d have to be an MD since I was going to be a doctor anyway. VM: You are an advocate for health care in Congress. What is your opinion on the direction of health care today? GM: I think this is the first time that anything substantive has been done from our government’s point of view. I think it isn’t anywhere near where it needs to be, but it is a start. We have been trying for many years to get something done, so at least I am pleased with this movement. There are a group of physicians that are interested in holistic medicine and not just alternative medicine but in the concept of body, mind, and spirit medicine. We have come together, created two papers, and have been able to talk to and consult with members of Congress. It’s hard to get to the Congressmen or Congresswomen themselves, but you can get to their aides. One of the people that [has] been really helpful throughout this whole process is Susan Riley. She was Ted Kennedy’s top aide for 40 years and she has been able to set us up with different groups and people. We are in the process of meeting with people in Washington. We know it’s going to take time, but we are talking about a paradigm shift in consciousness when it comes to health care, and that doesn’t happen easily. It is going to take time. VM: Could you describe the system of real healing you talk about? GM: Conventional medicine works with diseases, and when you have a disease that you have gotten under control, as far as the symptoms are concerned, [you think] that you have brought about a healing, and that is not necessarily so. Really it’s just a quieting of the symptoms. True healing comes from an integration of the body, mind, and spirit in a way that sometimes does not cure the disease but brings about a balance for the person so that they are truly whole. It’s like Franklin Roosevelt. He suffered from the result of Polio all his life, and yet I would consider him whole. Some of the most whole people I know who have chronic illnesses have become better human beings in relationship to the world, not because of the disease necessarily, but with that condition. I am a little bit tired of hearing about wellness, because nobody is totally well. We all have corns or constipation or something. I am very interested in wholeness. I think that we can become whole, as we are human beings and we are here to do the work that each one of us separately and individually came here to do. VM: Could you talk about your experience creating what you call the art of medicine? GM: I am very interested in both the art and science of medicine. I think that medicine needs both. The art of medicine is something that we practice and is an individual thing. We use science as a wonderful tool in the art of medicine. I think we have come a long way in the science of medicine, but the art of medicine is something that each individual incorporates into their own life’s work. Any art is something that is created from within that person. In medicine it has to be the combination of the creative life force energy within the physician who is working as a caregiver and the patient who is the one who does the real healing. It is that bringing together of the art and science that brings about healing. I have watched beautiful jobs of surgeries that haven’t healed and I have watched botched jobs of surgery that have healed really well. So the question is, who does the healing? It is the art of medicine that brings together the physician within, and the physician without that brings about the healing. VM: Our theme this month is about exploring different generations. When you think of this term, in reference to health and living well, what comes to mind? GM: I think it has a great deal to do with timing. We have to be timely. Things that are happening now could not have happened when I was first practicing medicine, and at first I was able to do things that I cannot do now. I think that timing is absolutely essential. One of the things I am very concerned about is conscious birthing. I think that we have trivialized the whole process of birthing, which I think is a spiritual gift, and I am working with a group of women on what we are calling the Inner Womb Project. It has to do with pre and peri-natal psychology and the consciousness that is brought into life when a baby V I S I O N M AG A Z I N E

is conceived. The opposite aspect is what I am calling Aging Into Health, because I think that each part of our growth process on this dimension can either be directed toward health or not. So all through our lives I think we need to look at aging into health, not aging into demise. VM: Do you see a difference in the way different ages are treated in health care? GM: I think we have become very confused about aging and about youth. In fact I have written an article entitled “When did the Shirley Temple Doll Become the Barbie Doll?” In other words, when did we eliminate that growth process that little girls have when they are 9 and 10 years old and they are having tea parties and so on, and then put them with the Barbie doll? We have completely bypassed that normal growth process in pushing little girls into Barbie dolls with high heels and thinking about dating Ken. At that point they still think boys have ‘cooties.’ We have tried to force them into puberty when they are not ready. Then we spend the rest of our lives trying to be young again. It again comes back to timing. We are what we are, when we are at that age. When we try to skip any of those ages or try to go back, all it does is confuse us. If we can accept the aging process in all of its stages, the way it is, then we are living our lives to the fullest. My next book is going to be, “The World Needs Old Ladies.” VM: You also speak about Living Medicine. How has this played out when you were in Africa or Asia? GM: I was born and raised in India and then came to the states [US]. I have worked in Afghanistan and other countries. Let me tell you how I came up with the idea of living medicine. It must have been around the turn of the century [2000]. I was talking to friends about the fact that medicine the way I saw it was that it was a killing machine, it was a war machine. Everything that we are taught has to do with getting rid of something, getting rid of cancer or AIDS or eliminating diabetes. It’s all in terms of conquering and getting rid of. Our language is against life itself. It’s antibiotic, anti-convulsive. What really gets me is the anti-aging. I mean, what are we supposed to do? Our support groups support the disease; they really don’t support the person. We have cancer support groups and epilepsy support groups, and if you are going to have a war machine then you have to have ammunition. The ammunition we have is supplied by the pharmaceuticals. When I came to Phoenix in 1955, the PDR (the Physicians Desk Reference) was half an inch thick, and now it is at least four inches thick and has three addendums. The more you work with a war machine the more ammunition you need to keep on creating the illnesses that are created by the ammunition that you have created. It’s an endless cycle. I was going on and on like this talking to my friends and I stopped and said, instead of killing medicine what we need is living medicine. I said, “Thank you, God, I have been waiting 81 years for that!” If we are alive we will know it. We will have illnesses, we will be born, we will die, but our focus is going to be on life and living—not on death and killing. So the whole concept of living medicine incorporates the science of medicine and the art of medicine and it incorporates conventional medicine and alternative medicine. Our focus is on life and living; it’s that whole awareness. I had a patient who had lung cancer. She had been a smoker and she had had all of the conventional therapy and called me up and said, “Now I need a blood transfusion and I don’t want one. I am afraid.” She said she was afraid of AIDS and hepatitis, which is silly because she was dying of cancer, but when you are V I S I O N M AG A Z I N E
f e a t u r e afraid, it’s not silly—it’s fear. And fear immobilizes everything. Finally I said to her, maybe you could look at it this way, there is somebody in this world who loves you enough to have given their life’s blood for you. So when she was able to take her energy off of the fear of something and put it onto love, she was able to get the blood transfusion. It’s that kind of shift in consciousness that says we are working towards life and living, not killing. VM: Have you done dream interpretation most of your life? GM: I didn’t work on them much as a kid. I was too busy just being a kid. But as an adult, yes. Working with my patients, it has been a wonderful tool. I love working with my patients’ dreams. I had this one patient that had terrible headaches. We had done everything, acupuncture and biofeedback, we changed her diet, and she still had these headaches. One day she came into my office and said she had a dream that she was in my office and she had one of her horrible headaches, so she reached into her purse to get some of her pain pills, at which point in the dream I came in and looked at her and told her not to take them, and when we looked in her hand she had two M&M’s. That was the dream. So in the dream I represented the physician within her, which was telling her not to eat chocolate. So when she stopped eating chocolate her headaches stopped. It’s that kind of wonderful guidance and direction that I have been able to work with as far as the patients are concerned. VM: Given the fact you are 90, how can people live well into their 90s and beyond? GM: A number of years ago my oldest daughter was standing by me when someone asked me that question. I said, “I don’t know.” And my daughter said, “Oh mom you know what it is, you dwell in gratitude.” I said, “Well okay, I guess that is true.” It’s more than being just grateful. I am so grateful for everything. It immerses everything that I do. Part of our job as human beings is transforming the human race. This sounds grandiose but I believe it. VM: Do you have hope for humanity looking over your amazing career and long life? GM: Absolutely. When I started in medicine we didn’t think that smoking and drinking had anything to do with a baby’s health. When you talk about pregnancies and deliveries, women were taken to the hospitals and anesthetized for days and didn’t know what was going on for days. I didn’t know I had a son until 24 hours after he was born. We kept these patients in the hospitals for two weeks. Finally we got it into our heads that women knew how to have babies and it didn’t have to become a disease process. It took me 12 years to get a husband in the delivery room. I think there is a lot of hope. The simplest things in life are the hardest to do. We talk about love, but we really have to experience it to understand it. I really believe that with the emerging consciousness that we have, that things are changing, and they have changed a lot in my lifetime. I spent many years being called a witch doctor, but now people actually listen to me talk. The word ‘holistic’ was a really bad word, sort of connected with the devil or something. I started the foundation that bears my name in 1989. The purpose of it was to bridge the gap between conventional and holistic medicine. VM: What does the McGarey Foundation do? GM: Like every living thing, it is in the process of change. We are working very hard with the health care reform process, but we are also very much involved with conscious birthing. I am deeply concerned with the number of Cesarean sections continued on page 44

his February, for the ninth year in a row, the Conscious Life Expo will take place in Los Angeles. The purpose of the Expo is “to participate in the conscious co-creation of a new world, a world based on new paradigms in science, in spirituality, in longevity, in local and global community, in relationship, in health and well-being.” The Expo will feature more than 50 speakers, all coming together to celebrate the evolution of human consciousness and share their stories of transformation and insight into the possibilities of global as well as personal evolution. I was fortunate to be able to speak with three of the presenters: Sunny Dawn Johnston; Nia Peeples; and Madeleine Marentette. Each of these women spoke of their own personal transformations of mind, body, and spirit and how they strive to help others with their journey towards the authentic self. Vision Magazine: Can you tell me about the center you founded, Sunlight Alliance? Sunny Dawn Johnston: Sunlight Alliance is a healing center in Glendale, Arizona, and I created it because I wanted a space that people could come to where they would feel safe, where they would feel comfortable to explore their intuitive abilities, their natural gifs, their spirituality. I wanted to have a place where I could create the energy and maintain that energy. VM: What kind of things do you teach as a medium and spiritual teacher? SJ: As a spiritual teacher, what I’m really teaching people is to connect with their spirit. Sunny Dawn Johnston I teach classes on psychic development [and] intuitive development so they can learn how to connect with that energy of this being, the feeling, the knowing. I teach people about mediumship, how to connect with their deceased loved ones. I teach about the mind body spirit connection. A lot of what I’m teaching these days is how to connect with our angels and our spirit guides and how to honor our body and listen to messages our body is giving us and really how to love and accept ourselves the way that we are and not get into that critical place of judgment and criticism that so many of us tend to be in. I am a medium, so not only do I work with people, [but also] once they’ve had someone that’s passed over, then oftentimes they’ll want to get messages from their loved ones. I also work as a psychic detective with police agencies from all over the world. We work on missing persons cases and help the police either find the bodies of the people that are deceased and/or the suspects of the people that did the crime. I use my mediumship abilities to bring closure and healing to families that have lost loved ones through tragic circumstances. VM: What made you decide to speak at the Conscious Life Expo? SJ: I’ve not actually been to the Conscious Life Expo, but I’ve heard from many different people over the last few years that it was a great place to really share information and knowledge with others of like minds, and so that’s really what V I S I O N M AG A Z I N E
my goal is—to be a part of the conscious change on the planet right now. And this past year I had three people, I think within two days, bring up the Conscious Life Expo. And so, to me that was a sign that I needed to be a part of it. I’m excited to be doing “Embracing the Body That Is,” because I have a lot of passion around that subject. When we start wanting to open ourselves up and connect more with our spirit, we really need to be able to love ourselves unconditionally. So the workshop I’m doing at the Conscious Life Expo is about embracing who you are. And yes, it’s focused on the physical body, but in that physical body, it’s really loving who you are and forgiving the past and changing your mind about the way you think about yourself. It’s also about how we talk to ourselves. In our head, we’ve got all these thoughts that go on, and our body is listening to every single one of those, and if we recognize the power that those thoughts have [and] if people really owned that about themselves, we would be much better at paying attention to our thoughts. People are starting to become aware of that mind body connection, but not to the level that we could. So my intention and my hope is that with classes like this we can recognize that we need to learn to love ourselves. VM: What would you like to share with future generations regarding your experience of learning to accept and love your body and yourself? SJ: Number one is for all of us to be supportive and teach positive language and be mindful of what we say. A lot of times people will just say [things] they don’t even think about. Right before puberty, I got a little bit chubby and my dad would tease me about having a little bit of a belly, and that voice in my head didn’t leave until my late twenties because I still felt like that chubby little girl. I think that for the generations that are coming it’s about who we are, not what we are. It seems to me that the generation behind us is much more aware than we were. I think they’re ready to make changes, and at the same time, it’s us, our generation, that’s teaching them. VM: What do you want people to take away from your workshop and the Expo? SJ: I want them to take away the understanding that it’s in our power to heal and we don’t have to be dependent on anybody else. Once we become of aware that we want to make a change, all we have to do is love ourselves through that. Loving ourselves, seeing our worth, recognizing our value as beings on this planet can allow us to get our mind, our body, our spirit into alignment. I would want them to walk away with the empowerment, with the knowing that they can make those changes. I know what it’s like to struggle with all kinds of things, and as I started making those changes internally, my external life made a 180 degree turn, and now I really do love and accept myself in every aspect even though some of my stuff has been kind of nasty and ugly in my life. I have appreciation and gratitude, so I can love who I am. Vision Magazine: The title of your presentation at the Conscious Life Expo is called “The Myth of Perfection—the 12 Elements of life.” What are the 12 Elements of Life? Nia Peeples: Individuality (beauty is in it, your best you is in it), Faith (in who you are most uniquely, in who you are becoming, that the universe cannot help but conspire to bring us closer to who we really are through serendipity and hard lessons as well), Passion (to live, to love, to learn, to laugh), Courage (to allow, to pursue, to be, to become), Inspiration (from the outside, from the inside, for the outer, for the inner), Adventure (for fun, for knowledge, for realization, for the soul), Freedom (not just Nia Peeples equality), Balance (of mind, body, spirit, of discipline and spontaneity, of mother, child, vixen, of complexity and simplicity, of diligence and devil may care), Forgiveness

(of others by ourselves, by others for ourselves, by ourselves for ourselves), Innovation (equals brilliance plus common sense), Expression and Celebration (of all of the above), and Transformation (always and forever). For years people have come to me and said, “You need to be a brand. You have great skin, you have great hair, you’re in great shape, you’re a mom, a career woman.” So I had been asked to write a book on health, beauty, and fitness. As I started to write out an outline, I thought, “This is really bogus.” I have stayed in shape, yes. I’ve been blessed with really good genetic skin, and I’ve taken good care of that skin, with a healthy lifestyle, good nutrition, and exercise. But whatever beauty “secrets” you’re looking for me to share have continually changed throughout my life. Because my life, like my body, is constantly evolving. But the one thing that has carried me through all of it is a philosophy. Now that I can share. So, the outline they asked me to write on my health, beauty, and fitness secrets turned into my health, beauty, and fitness philosophy that works from the inside out. Because no matter what you’re doing on the outside, if you don’t have it together on the inside, none of it matters much. These [12 Elements of Life] begin by addressing the myth of perfection: Perfection is not something we achieve. It is not a destination to arrive at. Perfection is something we move through one moment at time, allowing us to discover it again and again. Perfection is constant transformation. VM: How did you struggle with the myth of perfection? NP: For me, there is this drive within me to be the very best that I can be at anything I put my hand to. Deep down, there is the self-limiting belief that I’m not worthy unless I put forth my very best—and that is perfection. But guess what, I’m never the best I can be, because every day I’m learning, growing. What I’m capable of changes emotionally, physically, circumstantially. Of course Hollywood places the pressure on the way you look, on the way you stand, your “heat.” So how did I deal with that demanded perfection? By constantly laughing at it. I just thought, what am I doing here? I can’t do that. The “it girl” this month is blond. Next month she’s a red head. But EVERY month she’s well over 5’ 2’’ and definitely not of mixed race. At least not when I was starting out. And when people began approaching me about being a brand, the pressure was intense. “Show everyone how to have your hair, your physique, your perfect life.” I just thought, “No way! I can’t, no!” Why? Because I’m human, and I will fall flat on my face at some point like everyone does. VM: How do you feel that all people can challenge that pressure to be perfect and have that perfect life? NP: Well, I think they have to question what perfection is. Perfection really is constant transformation. Everyone in this world has a light, a unique light. The minute I step off this planet, my light disappears. There’s nobody else that can bring my light to this earth and to the universe. And so evolving into a place where that light becomes brighter and brighter, the willingness to constantly transform more and move into that light, the way that we were brought into this world purely, before all the self-limiting beliefs were created, that’s perfection. VM: Do you think that this myth of perfection extends through all generations? NP: There’s always been a myth of perfection; [it] has existed in forms from the beginning of time. And for every age. Someone somewhere somehow is always setting the pace, creating a standard based on something that may have value to them. Then people follow. V I S I O N M AG A Z I N E
f e a t u r e But people have to learn how to trust the truth that comes from within them. I don’t think you can be given or told what brings you happiness, or success, or peace or passion—you have to allow that to unfold from within. VM: What do you hope that the attendees of the Expo will take away from your presentation and the Expo as a whole? NP: Well, the Expo as a whole is an interesting thing. I walked through the smaller Expo and there were some interesting people. Interesting objects for sale. Everything from aura reading to crystal healing. Everybody’s there trying to get better, be stronger, more whole. What I hope they’ll take away from my lecture is a greater faith in who they are most authentically. That’s where our greatest power and our brightest light really lie. Vision Magazine: What will you be speaking about at the Conscious Life Expo? Madeleine Marentette: My journey, which I call the Quest for the Living Grail, was a journey that started when I was 18 years old that ran through a couple of decades of severe illness and meeting the Dalai Lama in 1988, which became the changing day in my life. I realized that what I needed to stop focusing on was trying to fi x my body, but rather fi x the way I was looking at life. I went on this incredible journey understanding heart and mind sciences, and as a result of the study, my physical body started to change and heal. I’ll be delivering the prescribed programming that we do here at Grail Springs [Canada’s Madeleine Marentette premier retreat for mind body spirit transformation]. VM: Could you tell me about meeting the Dalai Lama and how that changed your life? MM: It was at a time when I was at my worst, physically. And I had not been able to really leave home very much for about 8 years, and so I ended up with a ticket from a friend, and I knew I needed to go. I had a lot of anxiety for about a month whether I was going to make it. As I walked into the conference hall in the University of Toronto, we were given headphones because he was speaking to a small group of Tibetan monks, and we were allowed to listen to the translation. What ended up happening is because I had so much anxiety about what he was going to say—I was trying so hard to hear the lesson—I couldn’t conceptualize a thing. However, I remember walking out of the hall and I’m feeling really devastated. I’m passing by him and shaking his hand and moving on and feeling almost in grief, and I didn’t understand what he had said. But something else was going on inside of me, and as I walked into the garden at the University of Toronto, I went and sat under a tree and thought, what just happened to me, because I actually had a sense of incredible of peace about me, and I realized what I’d connected with. I must have gone into this incredibly deep meditation where I connected with the essence of his presence, and I just simply embodied that peace of mind, that peace of heart continued on page 44

As children become teenagers and then adults, they are thrown into an even more techno-friendly world. Now they have their own cell phones, laptops, iPods and TVs. Is this too much of a good thing? Should it be considered socializing if both parties are constantly texting someone else? It seems that today the present isn’t enough; people need more. No longer is it living in the moment, but more so what is going to be happening in the future, whether that future be seconds, minutes, hours, or even days. “All one has to do is look around at any social situation where people should be communicating with those around them, such as in restaurants at mealtime, to see that more and more families and friends are actually communicating electronically with people away from their immediate surrounding,” says Randall. “Not only is this behavior rude to those sitting with them, it is inappropriate and very selfish behavior, and left un-addressed, this will cause more problems as it continues to be allowed to develop.” Texting is one such cause for increasing distractions while in social situations. This communication method is known worldwide and seems to be displacing normal social means. Texting and cell phone use has become so important that people all over the world are endangering themselves and others in its cause. The National Safety Council (NSC), estimated at least 1.6 billion crashes are caused each year due to cell phone use and texting; that is 28 percent of all traffic crashes. Is one call or one text worth a life? A 2010 survey conducted by the Gadsden Times produced shocking results of what students deemed their opinion about texting while driving. One student said, “They should make new devices to use behind the wheel.” Another insisted, “It is sometimes quite necessary and helpful.” There were those who agreed texting was dangerous, but a large sum showed no real interest in the facts. According to the University of North Texas Health Science Center, texting while driving is responsible for 16,141 deaths from 2001 to 2007. The facts show that texting while driving, in actuality, is the opposite of helpful, and surely there is no need for new technology to further this problem. To grasp the state of society’s greed, one must simply glance at the shocking answers above, which is such a prime example of the disgraceful need-for-more mind state of individuals in this society. This is what people are learning. That cell phones are more important than lives, that Facebook is the new socialization tool, that cyberspace is reality. Instead of searching the Web for constructive purposes, people of all ages are living there. Some say Facebook is a great way to communicate with old friends or people far away, but is that what it is being used for? Rather than actually logging into the site and specifically speaking to those individuals, hours are wasted on stalking people, searching through pictures, and reading endless statuses that have no real relevance to anything at all. If used in moderation, Facebook can actually be helpful. Parents log in quite often to view the status of Naval ship USS Abraham Lincoln, which is currently on deployment. Family members yearn for news of their sailors, and with constant updates, pictures, and videos, they can stay connected in a whole new way. “I think it is the trend in society to be involved,” Kepley says. “It has made this world a very small place and I think it is good for mankind. Time and technology are going to press forward. It’s how you use them that will inevitably affect this world.” Today society is driven on technology. It’s the way we use it that will shape future generations of this world. Kepley says, “Use it wisely and for its purposes, otherwise it can bring down your world.” Amanda Hinds is a graduate from Kent State University with a degree in Journalism and Mass Communications. She is currently a design intern at Vision Magazine and has created cover art for several issues as well as page designs for the magazine. Contact her at 330.858.0445 or e-mail manderz0266@yahoo.com. r e v i e w s a Documentary by Tom Shadyac
T
om Shadyac’s new documentary, “I AM,” offers a powerful message of our interconnectivity here on Earth. We are at an amazing time in history where science and spirituality share common ground through great organizations such as HeartMath™ and teachers such as Howard Zinn and Lynn Taggert. Watching this film was very inspiring and informative with the great array of teachers, visuals, and its lively soundtrack. Shadyac’s sense of humor was apparent as he interviewed some of best minds of our time. The title of this documentary comes from a question posed by the London Times in the early 20th century: What is wrong with the world? It was answered by a gentleman named G.K. Chesterfield in which he answered very succinctly, “Dear Sirs, I am.” It is clear that Chesterfield was aware of his actions as a man and the effects of his life on the world. Looking at what it is to live in the 21st century, Shadyac asks if we are by nature competitive or cooperative beings. The answer just may surprise you. There is much more cooperation in nature than there is competition. And as science reveals, we share much of the same DNA as many of the creatures on our earth. What science has proven is that we are cooperative by nature. And as one scientist puts it, “Cooperation is in our DNA.” I hadn’t realized that in Darwin’s book, “On the Origin of the Species,” he refers to survival of the fittest two times and love ninety-five times. It just goes to show you how the written word can be skewed to support our ultra-competitive world. Our consumption-oriented society has forgotten about how our actions will affect the next seven generations as we are reminded that nature never takes more than it needs. That sentiment is something we all might examine in our quest for the newest gadget or a bigger car. It’s interesting how times of economic downturn will galvanize us toward more reasonable ways of living. For example, we may turn to growing our own food or choosing a smaller home. It is not only our habits but also our thoughts that have influence around us. What you do may affect more than what you perceive to be your sphere of influence. Much of the new science continues to support the theory that there is only the appearance of separation between each one of us and the world. Our hearts and our minds can literally impact other human beings, plants, animals, and other objects animate or inanimate in our world. The understanding that we create our own reality is not that controversial in quantum physics. We can be the change we want to see in the world. And I for one, as an avowed peacenik, am thrilled that science supports my nonviolent nature. Don’t miss this movie!—SLM For more information, please visit www.iamthedoc.com. On February 8, there will be a benefit screening for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Los Angeles, CA, and on February 10 there will be a screening at Hope International University in Fullerton, CA and at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, CA

The Small Miracle For Back Pain and Sciatica Sufferers by Frank Conforti
I
have had back pain for 35 years or more. I’ve had six or more MRI’s, acupuncture, and countless chiropractic work. Two years ago my quality of life was a zero. I ended up with physical therapy and a series of shots. My therapist found the Sacro Wedgy® for personal use and shared this with me. The next morning I woke up and just had to call him; I never felt like that before—I was almost normal. I got my own Sacro Wedgy® and used it according to the instructions. Over the past two years I’ve only gotten better and better. I’ve purchased 10 for friends and family. One person had the same life changing experience that I had. If you buy the Sacro Wedgy® and use it every day for a month, then every other day you contribute to its effectiveness. Now I use it when needed or once a week. I hope everyone takes this seriously and tries it. I now have quality of life. I walk 45 minutes a day, I sleep, and I’m happy again. Where was this 35 years ago?! Cindy Ballis, the daughter of the inventor, tells her story: “My journey started back in the late 1950s when my Father began helping his athletes with back pain by using an osteopathic technique. He would place his hand under the sacrum, lift, and hold for about 20 minutes until he felt a release. The sacrum is the wedge shaped bone in the center of the hips and is often referred to as the “keystone” of our anatomy, the center of gravity with all of the weight from the upper torso transferring through the center and down to the legs. Common sense will tell you that if this “keystone” is the slightest bit out of alignment, there are going to be problems or “symptoms.” These symptoms range from sciatica, back pain, hip pain, knee pain, heel pain, and even into the neck and shoulders. He continued this technique for years, with many athletes returning long after finishing school to have him repeat the hold because that seemed to be the only thing that helped with their back issues. He finally decided to create a device that would mimic what his hand was doing, and that was to isolate, cradle, and elevate only the sacrum. I watched people come to our house, relax on the Sacro Wedgy® for about 20 minutes and leave feeling amazing relief. That’s when I decided I would keep this common sense invention in the family, and that was over 20 years ago. I started literally one person at a time, stopping people on the street if I saw them walking in pain and listening to thousands of sufferers describe sciatica and many other debilitating symptoms. Each person is so different, but the common thread goes back to a simple muscle imbalance. So, that is what we concentrate on—helping the body gently return to balance. There is no quick fix; most problems take time to get as bad as they are, so it will take time to reverse. With the help of my Dad, we’ve created a system of a natural dual traction, stabilizing both ends of the spine using the Sacro Wedgy® under the sacrum and support under the neck. Gravity does the work and you just relax. It corrects your posture in order to help relieve painful symptoms. I now teach, market, and sell this simple device worldwide along with my son who handles the web site. I am also a continuing education provider for massage therapists because they, along with other professionals, are still using their hands to hold the sacrum. You can’t imagine the feeling I get when someone calls or writes about how much relief they got from just relaxing 20 minutes a day on my Dad’s invention. The whole story, along with 25 pages of amazing letters from sufferers, is on our web site. I truly believe if people would start using this system on a regular basis they could not only help correct problems but, better yet, prevent problems from even occurring. Prevention is so important and is the keystone of good health and healing. If anyone is suffering, please consider embarking on a healing journey with a simple solution. The Sacro Wedgy® has helped when all else failed. For more information on Sacro Wedgy®, please visit the Web site at www.sacrowedgy.com or call Cindy Ballis, President of B & B Marketing, LLC, at 800.737.9295. V I S I O N M AG A Z I N E

Children of Change by Erin Tagan
M
ost people have heard the phrase “wise beyond one’s years,” which implies that the older the person, the more wisdom they have. But is wisdom necessarily associated with age, or are we overlooking the value of new minds? A collaboration of teachers, parents, and caregivers has provided information to support that today’s children have more to teach us than the average person would initially assume. The children of the newest generation were originally defined as the “Indigo Children” by a woman named Nancy Tappe, who has been diagnosed with synesthesia. As defined by the Massachusetts Institute of technology, on their Web site, http://web.mit.edu, synesthesia is “an involuntary joining in which the real information of one sense is accompanied by a perception in another sense.” Because of this disorder, Nancy is subject to senses blending together within her brain. As

a result, when she looks at people, her brain sends a color signal to her eyes that would not usually be perceived. After observing people for quite some time and associating each of them with colors, she discovered a pattern emerging between the colors and the behaviors of the corresponding individuals. This pattern led her to question whether “the colors might be indicators of consciousness or perhaps a combination of consciousness and behavioral traits.” She later began to observe a new color, indigo, and found that she was associating it only with babies. To this day, she has reported seeing no new or different colors associated with people since indigo. The implication is that the color indigo, from the first time she witnessed it in association with babies, until now, represents an alternative consciousness from that of the previous generations she had originally observed, and thus marks the beginning of the indigo generation. Lee Carroll and Jan Tober, the authors of “The Indigo Children: Ten Years Later,” collaborated with Nancy and have done extensive research on the indigo children. They created a Web site to explore their characteristics as well as their needs (see www.indigochild.com.) Here, they are classified as questioning authority and opposing conformity. They avoid practices that are ritualistic or do not encourage creativity. They carry themselves in a manner which suggests that they “deserve to be here” and should therefore be rewarded. In the absence of their kind (others sharing the same consciousness), they keep to themselves. Instead of comparing themselves to others and consequently feeling inadequate, they are at peace with their differences and quick to express their needs. Guilt trips fail to reprimand them and they simply dismiss certain cultural obligations that members of previous generations tend to accept as parts of their daily roles in society (e.g., waiting in line). Separately, each of these differences between generations may seem insignificant. However, looking at them from a broader perspective, they are indicative of a drastic change in our civilization. “Millennium: Glimpses Into the 21st Century,” published in 1981, explores what changes were likely to occur in society over the next 20 years. Marilyn Ferguson continued on page 46

expresses her knowledge if she really has that knowledge of the framework of the class.” This is definitely much more of a subjective view, and the language that a student has to reveal of their own wisdom base. Yes, we have subjective questions in almost every class and objective questions because of the philosophy, and you can answer it from an objective point of view. Then when they come through the ministerial program, it is much more subjective. VM: How do you see the different generations vary in spiritual development? KT: In our church group, we have young children all the way up to 70-yearolds. When we are working with children, they are curious; they are much more alert and free to explore than adults, especially when we have been raised in a religious belief system. The children today that come through the metaphysical philosophies seem to grab ahold of these teachings and then take them out into the world. We have a young woman who teaches the children and she uses various art forms to teach them how to become aware of how their words can hurt [others] and how they can transform the words of hurt into someone else. She’ll use things, such as wands, to change energy, change attitude, and she works with these children to open their hearts. With the teenagers, by using their positive attitude and making sure their language is positive [so that] they begin to learn that the mind and the heart come together. Some kids use it for sports and some use it for school. We start teaching them how to use their thought patterns, speech patterns, and universal patterns, and they actually start using it quickly. Some of our students who are in their 20s, 30s, 40s have come to metaphysics later in life. Now it’s about them having to learn how to adjust a very restrictive thinking pattern that has taught them of their unworthiness, whether it has been by religious dogma or of family dynamics. They begin to break through that, and you see people be more open to positive, affirmative prayer. I teach the youth the thought and the emotions with acronyms. I use acronyms because Malachi has taught me acronyms ever since I was connected with him. I will teach them two acronyms, Tea and Team. You can take the word tea and start sipping your tea type of thing, and put it into a visual form, and then honor it. T is thought, E is emotion, and A is action. [If] you want to manifest anything, your thought as an emotion has to be congruent, and if it is not, then the first area you are going to discover [where] it’s not is through your action. So you will either avoid doing something or something will happen. Once you get your thoughts and emotions and actions congruent, I will assure you that have a team. Your thought, emotion, and action will create a manifestation. There’s your M in team. Let me talk a little bit about the older generations. When I have clients come in that are in their 40s there is a whole lot of work that goes on to transform that subconscious level into a more empowered level. So at that point in counseling, I invite them to go to a Tibetan chakra therapy process. Through sounding and meditation, they will hear those voices of their unconscious and at the same time keep the status on really changing their mind and feelings to get to that higher state of consciousness so that they can transform their reality. Oftentimes they want to know more, so they immediately start working with the classes that are available, where can they gain more insight. People in their 50s seem to be involved in metaphysics in some level or their own experiences with other spiritual counselors. So they simply want to know more and how to use the thought from these patterns that they can sense but may not have a working awareness of. People in their 60s I find much more want to be spiritual counselors. Then we have a gentleman in his 70s and he just wants to learn for himself something that he didn’t learn earlier. People never give up. There is another way for our world to come together through unity and intention. Katherine Torres is the Founder and President of SPICA - Way of Light. “Health Freedom Expo” continued from page 7
JK: There are a number of things that interfere with living healthy in America today: poor quality foods; genetically modified foods; added chemicals to our air, food, water, and beauty products; environmental illnesses; increased stress levels; legislation that blocks access to information; [and] lack of education and ability to make informed choices. My father’s vision, which we carry on today, is to help people take responsibility for their own health. We show the public how to walk through the flood of health information, let them know they have choices, endorse natural health practitioners, and defend the right to make informed choices. At the beginning of 2008, citizen voters chose the topic of Health Freedom as one of the ten most important issues facing Americans. Since then the Health Care Reform Act was passed. There is still much disagreement about this legislation—what’s included and what is omitted and how it will impact natural and alternative health care education and freedoms. We continue to stay tuned to the current dialogues and debates; conventional medicine, by and large, does not acknowledge or support health freedom. Millions of Americans want access to care that includes the freedom to choose natural health, either alone or with conventional health care. This continues to have profound implications in the health reform debates. The FTC is on a censorship rampage, trying to shut down the free speech of not just nutritional supplements companies, but any suggestion of alternative or natural cancer remedies. The swine flu “pandemic” raised the threat of mandatory vaccinations, even though there were serious questions about the effectiveness of the vaccination and dangerous side effects. The FDA continues to engage in more prosecutorial activity and has exacted heavier penalties against sellers of supplements and homeopathic drugs than ever before in that short span of time. VM: Is our access to alternative care being hampered? Why? JK: Yes. Think monopoly and follow the money. VM: What can be done? JK: Litigation and legislation. The solution lies in responding to these assaults on freedom with litigation, legislation, and education. The more the consumer knows, the less they are willing to subjugate themselves to substandard health care. Prevention is key. Consumers need to become their own health care advocate. The Health Freedom Expos provide annual education forums, at affordable prices, so they can do just that. VM: What has been one of your proudest moments in the production of these Expos? JK: After every Expo, I receive feedback from our attendees and speakers telling us how worthwhile it was to attend the event. They meet and speak with experts. Our attendees feel empowered and informed. Our speakers and exhibitors tell us they’ve made important contacts. I am most proud of the fact that we are an educational forum that improves people’s lives. And we make it affordable to everyone. VM: How can different generations create more health and vitality in their lives? JK: Share the information. Demand better. Support natural health practitioners, educate your family, spread the word. Like all grassroots movements, natural health education is passed on and out into the community. My hope is that educated and practicing natural health consumers will use what they’ve learned and share their newfound awareness with others. By passing on the information to family and friends, it becomes a part of the fabric of their lives. The more education and knowledge that’s passed on, the bigger the demand for high quality information and products, which expands the demand and creates a whole new market. VM: What is your greatest passion? JK: To carry on my father’s dream. To create an informed public. To make a V I S I O N M AG A Z I N E
difference in the practice and education of natural health consumers. To ensure that this education will be supported and available to all and, most of all, that it transcends generations. VM: Who is or was your most memorable teacher? JK: My father was and still is my most memorable teacher. Also, the pioneers of health freedom who influenced him and are supportive of our mission. Their energies are contagious. I am blessed to be in a circle of people who’ve devoted their lives to bringing natural health information to the public and are willing to back it up, both with their support and energy and also legislatively. VM: Who are some of the speakers for the 2011 Long Beach expo? JK: Actresses, activists, and authors Mariel Hemingway and Daryl Hannah; radio host of Coast to Coast George Noory; Consumer activist Kevin Trudeau; GMO activist, author, and film maker Jeffrey Smith; author and activist John Robbins; fitness expert Kathy Smith; attorneys Jonathan Emord and Charlie Brown; cancer researcher Dr. Christopher Wild; humanitarian and activist Dick Gregory; relationship expert John Gray; cancer expert Dr. Leonard Coldwell, to name a few. Julie Kline has been carrying on the Health Freedom Expo in her father’s place since 2008, and does so annually in Long Beach, CA as well as in Chicago, IL. The Health Freedom Expo in Long Beach will take place on March 25-27, 2011. For more information on the Expo, including details about tickets, directions, exhibitors, and speakers, please visit www.healthfreedomexpo.com or www.healthkeepers.net.

no bowing Guru worship here! Mingtong trained with Dr. Pang at the center in China and has been in the United States for 20 years. He has a remarkable ability to translate and transmit this technology based on 5000 years of accumulated wisdom and practice in China so that it is accessible to the minds of modern Westerners. Mingtong recently settled in the Bay Area and has already attracted a large community of wonderful, caring people. My miraculous healing is not unusual. People are healing on all levels of their being, letting go of limited thinking and recovering from serious illnesses and life-long emotional pain. For myself I am profoundly grateful to have found this extraordinarily effective method of releasing past conditioning. Wisdom Healing Qigong has been my road Home, helping me to recognize that we are the love of the universe. Vivienne Verdon-Roe, Ph.D. won an Academy Award for a documentary film about women and peace, called Women for America, for the World. She now focuses her work on the inner world, with the understanding that our collective consciousness is creating the outer one. Vivienne is a certified instructor in Wisdom Healing Qigong. Master Mingtong is coming to the San Diego area to offer healing events and workshops on March 12-13, 2011 at UCSD. that are not necessary. I can’t really figure out why. It’s just the modern thing to do. I think women have been talked into the idea that it is easier and that they can schedule it. It’s a major surgery; it’s not good for the baby and not good for them. But we are very much involved in education—education of patients and medical students. VM: Who would have been your greatest teacher? GM: Well I happen to be a Christian so Christ consciousness is central to my philosophies, but my parents were amazing. I think I chose a family that suited me. When you wonder how things will change, what you [Vision Magazine] are doing is what is really going to change people. The media, the articles are what people want to hear that gives them hope. We are all part of a huge jigsaw puzzle, and if one piece is missing we are not complete. that he was emanating. It was the first time in about 20 years that I’d actually felt any kind of peace or been free from body pain. So it was a pretty big epiphany for me, and that’s when I heard myself talking to myself about, you need to fix the way you perceive life. And at that point, as a 28-year-old woman, who wasreally sick, I didn’t have a really good view of life. I was pretty mad. [My] parents had divorced, [I] had estranged brothers, really no friends; I isolated myself. So, I enrolled in University of Toronto, and that led me into the study of something called Raja Yoga. As a result of this study, I started disciplining my mind, my thoughts, and my life; as a result of that, my heart aspect, the emotional aspect, became a little more disciplined. And several months later, I noticed that my body was beginning to heal. VM: Can tell me about your retreat center, Grail Springs, and how your personal journey led you to create this place? MM: In 1993, when I was still in my healing process, I decided that I needed to leave the city (Toronto), and moved to the country and started a small B&B. I began inviting people to come to speak, I held retreats, and I started to speak. In 2003, it was through meeting Jim Carrey, who was here, [who helped find a connection to a chef for Grail Springs]. I was designing a health program based on everything I’ve learned from meditation, fitness, alternative medicine, [and] energy work. The missing link was food. And Jim Carrey told me about a chef who had specialized in every kind of diet on the planet for celebrities who were getting ready for movies, and that she had created this niche for herself where she could serve gourmet food, The South Beach Diet or macrobiotic or vegetarian; whatever it was that you were on, she would turn that into gourmet cuisine and would cook for these celebrities. So we [the chef] spoke for about two or three hours that night. She came out and cooked for me for two months, and by the end of the summer, I was completely healed. Then I got a hold of Dr. Haas in California (who will also be speaking at the Expo) who prescribes an alkaline diet. He came on board and helped me really understand what that does to the body. His belief was, if the world started to eat an alkaline based diet that was balanced, we would heal ourself from virtually all disease. What I found over the years [was] that we were seeing incredible results; people with severe arthritis were coming in with a cane and leaving 10 days later without one. VM: What do you hope to pass along to future generations, to lead a more fulfilling life? MM: That the most important thing is to feel a sense of self, and not to lose that. I have a son who’s 13 and he’s really connected to himself, so I try to nurture that so that he never loses that ability to feel inside himself what is right and what is wrong. And so I think with younger generations, we’re not teaching them to keep and maintain that connection. I believe what it takes is daily practice, meditation, quiet time. Go for a walk on the beach, go for a walk in the forest, somewhere where you can re-establish, every day, that connection with the quiet part of yourself, that knowing self. Seek and you shall find what you are looking for. Sunny Dawn Johnston is a medium and spiritual teacher, as well as the founder of Sunlight Alliance. Maggie Taylor is a digital artist who lives amid the moss and live oaks at the edge of a small swamp on the outskirts of Gainesville, FL. She was born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1961. Most of her childhood was spent watching countless hours of television; later she received a Philosophy degree from Yale University. She also received an MFA in Photography from the University of Florida. Luckily, advances in computer science have enabled Maggie to move beyond just making strange little color still-life images in the darkroom. Now, her digital composites of scans, drawings, and photographs have been exhibited in many places around the world. For example, these museums have collected her images: The Art Museum at Princeton University; The Fogg Art Museum at Harvard University; The Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, TX; The Cleveland Museum of Art; The High Museum of Art in Atlanta, GA; and The Museum of Photography in Seoul, South Korea. Maggie Taylor’s work is featured in the following books: “Adobe Photoshop Master Class: Maggie Taylor’s Landscape of Dreams,” published by Peachpit Press, Berkeley, 2005; “Solutions Beginning with A,” Modernbook Editions, Palo Alto, 2007; and in “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” by Lewis Carroll, Modernbook Editions, Palo Alto, 2008.

in my room a lot, I would see these angels. At first they looked like, the best way my mind could grasp it was dancing Christmas lights. There was this interdimensional feeling like I was going into some sort of gateway where I could feel the air pressure shift. Then I feel this kind of swooning music with it. I would feel loved, comforted, supported, and the loneliness would go away. They would come to me every time I would feel alone, sick, or afraid. Then I would see these people everywhere, that I now know were deceased, [but] they weren’t relatives coming to me, kind of like the movie “The Sixth Sense.” I didn’t know what was going on. My family’s religious model didn’t include angels; we were very Jesus and Godoriented. The more this happened the more I felt like some kind of freak, like the kids were accusing me of. It wasn’t until much later in life that all of this came together. That is why I am so passionate about helping kids understand what is going on, so they don’t have to go through what I did. It’s really one big piece of the puzzle of healing to me: personal healing and global healing. I have hope for our planet. I really feel that humanity is at another pivotal fork in the road and if we take care of the environment we can really continue onto such a beautiful path. VM: How do you find your archangel or have a sense of your guardian angel? DV: Some people just read about them [the archangels] and you feel your body respond to which one you are working with the most. You can also find out what colors you are attracted to. Archangels work with a different color spectrum. So if you are extremely attracted to cobalt blue and purple, that is a sign you are working with Michael. If you are drawn to emerald green, it is a sign you are working with Raphael. You can work with every archangel. There are thousands of them, from the different traditions going back to Babylonian times. VM: What is the response when you teach seminars? DV: I meet a lot of skeptics and what I call, ‘strag-alongs’ (a wife who’s really into angels will bring her husband). So I see all kinds of people. Before Y2K I saw a real shift where people became much more open to spirit because they were afraid of Y2K. And this year, with the coming of the year 2012, I see a sense of spiritual surrender “just in case.” I just want to tell people I have no agenda to convince them. I just put it out that, :here is a way to experience angels and you make up your own mind.” In that context people don’t have to defend themselves. They can be investigators or scientists, experimenting with the hypothesis given to them. It’s so interesting, I mentioned the wife who loves angels, bringing her skeptical husband. Usually with that kind of pairing, she wants to talk to the angels so badly that she is trying too hard. She usually struggles, where the husband who doesn’t give a damn is the one that gets all the big archangel Michael experiences that day. You have to just approach angels as part of everyday life and not make such a big deal and try too hard to make them accessible. I have great hope for humanity. I think people are good and I think this is a beautiful place of Eden. I think everything is going to work out for all of us. VM: How can people create more lightness and laughter in their life? DV: The main thing is not to worry so much and really get a handle on the fact that when you worry it’s now practice for manifestation. Whatever worry you put out there will meet you on the road down the path, just like the old book title, “You Can’t Afford The Luxury of a Negative Thought.” It’s never been truer. As light workers, our job is to be happy; that is our life purpose. It’s not selfish. I am a really happy person and at the same time I am extremely passionate about what is going on with children in Africa and how the environment is being treated. You can be concerned and compassionate and still be happy. The Dalai Lama is my hero for that.
discusses the pending shift in society in terms of what Abraham Maslow defined as “the old paradigm of protection values” to “the emerging paradigm of growth values.” In comparison to the generations preceding them, the indigo children exhibit a revolutionary approach to the protection values and show significant movement towards the growth values. The protection values represent the system to which society has adhered to in the past, emphasizing the idea that survival is paramount and must be fought for, whereas the growth values are characteristic of an increase in spontaneity and a decrease in competitive attitude. As Ferguson describes it, “Movement toward the Growth Values is experienced more as a dawning realization than a sudden conversion.” While members of previous generations have spent time meticulously planning for the future, saving money, and making arrangements in all aspects of their lives, this new generation is more likely to act on a whim without a second thought of safety because they consider it a given. This assumption of survival coincides directly with the “we deserve to be here” demeanors associated with the indigos; if survival is a given, then they shouldn’t need to prove they’re worthy of it. Furthermore, without fear of the unknown, they are more comfortable with taking chances and living in disaccord with the rest of society, which explains their tendencies towards creativity and away from conformity. Instead of blindly accepting the values of their mentors and authority figures, they challenge what they have been taught, displaying the most apparent desire to learn for themselves. Oftentimes, these children are diagnosed with ADHD or similar behavioral disorders and prescribed medication to calm them down. However, learning is not simply taking the information you have been given and applying it as fact. The best method of learning is challenging these “facts” and assuming they are false until proven otherwise. Perhaps, then, these disorders should be evaluated, and instead of using medicine to subdue their challenges to authority, their oppositions should be considered a sign of growth. Carol Crestetto, whom Carroll and Tober also interviewed, has worked in children’s education for more than 25 years and approaches the children with these diagnosed behavioral disorders as “different—not necessarily ‘disabled’ so much as ‘differently abled.’” Working with them, she said she has found that “the problem was more often in others’ perception of them than in their own concern about being able to do as others did.” In other words, the children themselves did not express shame in their inability to live up to the expectations of others, which further signifies their movement towards a new consciousness. According to “Millennium,” The Protection Values focus on “Image - meeting or exceeding cultural expectations,” whereas the Growth Values direct attention to “Authenticity-meeting or exceeding one’s own expectations; flexibility.” The children’s indifference to the expectations of society displays their ability to acknowledge their own weaknesses while finding other strengths. Rather than feeling inadequate, the child is able to direct these strengths and weaknesses to realistically create an identity for him or herself and design his or her own goals accordingly instead of merely adopting the goals of society. As today’s children are more frequently illustrating behaviors that classify them as indigo children, the line materializes, distinguishing them from generations before. As a result, they are headed in the direction of revolution. Instead punishing their attempts to challenge society and writing their different behavior off as misbehavior, we should keep our minds open to their needs and realize there is a reason for their questions—to find an answer. As long as they continue to ask questions, they will continue to find the answers they’re looking for, guiding our civilization safely, yet spontaneously, into the future.
