Tåsinge Landet
Troense
Avernakø garlanded with beech branches and spring flowers every Saturday in Pentecost. On your right, you pass several small ponds. If you come along in the spring, you may be lucky to hear the croaking of the rare fire-bellied toad. Skalle road leads to the village of Munke with the beautiful monks farm, which is reflected in the village pond. Turn right onto the main road. About one kilometre off the main road you reach the Turnpike. Until 1937 Avernakø was two islands that were ‘linked’ by an approximately 700 m long causeway between Avernak and Korshavn. During the economic crisis of the 1930s, as part of maintaining employment, money was granted for the construction of this embankment between the two
Avernakø is located six kilometres from Faaborg and consists of two islands – Avernak and Korshavn – which were connected with a causeway called The Turnpike in 1937. The island is eight km long and has a coastal circumference of nineteen kilometres. You arrive at Avernakø at the west end of the island where there is a harbour café, which is a good place in summer to wait for the ferry or to take some refreshment. From the ferry dock there is only one road and it leads to Avernak village. Turn right at the Skalle road. Here stands one of

Avernakø’s maypoles. The maypole has gradually become Avernakø’s landmark. The maypole is a symbol of fertility from pagan times - a prayer to the gods to have a good harvest in the field. Today it functions as the island’s official flagpole. When exactly it arrived Avernakø is lost in the past, but the traditions are continued in Avernak village and in Munke, where the maypole is
islands. Throughout the years many people have drowned when they have tried to cross the Turnpike in stormy weather.’Through common enterprise The Turnpike became a roadway’ are the words that
Info Box Distance 16 km (Avernakø is 8 km long) Beautiful eventful trip with great views of the archipelago. Difficulty: There are not many inclines and not many cars. The roads are narrow and asphalted. Suitability for children: The trip is good for children, offering many possible experiences, places to relax and nice bathing areas.
stand on the memorial stone there, marking the unity and development between the two island communities. Welcome to Korshavn where there are two major shipwrecks from ancient times. Unfortunately they were not preserved - and are now part of the embankment. Korshavn jetty is a small harbour that is an ideal place in which to rest and if the weather is suitable, the main road ends at Kappelodden where there is a good but deep bathing beach.
today is a country hotel, as well as the island’s grocery store. The main road leads through the village, past the island’s summer house area and returns to the ferry dock. Avernakø means ”The place where the eagle lives” (originally Ar-nache which is composed of Ar = eagle, nache = neck / place).
You cannot now go any further east so turn your bike around. The way back is again along the highway. However, you can take a detour along Nakkevej and all the way to Nakke Odde, which is a child-friendly wide, sandy beach. Back over the Turnpike, on through Munke and on past Avernakø Church. In the church you can pause, and among other things, see copies of the six gold bowls with solar symbols that were found on the island in 1685. Shortly before Avernak village you will find the island’s old school, which

Lyø Infoboks Distance 10 km On Lyø you do not cycle around the coast. You cannot do that. You drive as if in a star, where the village is the centre from which the roads originate. They bring you out both to the famous dolmen, The Bell Stone, the bird sanctuaries, tunnel valleys, fantastic fishing grounds, Lyø Mill - and a very rich animal and plant life. Difficulty: There are no dangerous roads. The trip is very varied with a few short gravel / dirt roads on the east side of the island, but these can easily be tackled with ordinary bicycles. There are plenty of good opportunities for bathing and swimming. Suitability for children: Bird Breeding Reserve On the northwestern side of the island is a large area represented by shading. Access is prohibited in this area and on the beach during the period 01/3 - 15/7, but there are towers from which you can experience the many seabirds.
From the ferry and the harbour there is only one road leading up to the village and to a memorial stone for the Reunification in 1920. Lyø has always had great trade and a connection with Als. Turn east along Østensvej, which runs along one of the tunnel valleys in the small Ice Age landscape found on the eastern part of Lyø. Soon the road goes along the coast, from which there is a good view of Avernakø and Skjoldnæs lighthouse on Ærø. Østensvej ends at a farm - but don’t be fooled - the road goes through the courtyard further along to Smedegyden. Follow Smedegyden up to the village. Turn right onto Lyø Bygade, and continue on Søndenvej and further west on Vestensvej to the several thousand-year-old dolmen, the Bell Stone. This is an old chamber from the Stone Age. It gives out a clear tone when you strike it. Continue along Vestensvej to Revvej. From here you can take a detour towards Revet and the bird observation tower, which gives a good view over the nature area on Lyø Trille. The Revvej road leads east to Roestoftesvej and back to Lyø village. Back in the village, you should pay a visit to the circular churchyard (the only one in Denmark), which is said to be built according to traditions dating back to Renaissance ornamental gardens. The church itself was built right after the Reformation, and on Lyø, men and women attending a service still sit on their respective sides of the church.
6 Klokkestenen (The Bell Stone)
Lyø village is centrally placed and situated higher on the island, and with its five ponds and several hundred year old farmhouses you are taken back to a time when everything went a little slower. In the 16th century, the entire population of Lyø died out after epidemics and looting and the island was repopulated in the 1540s by 24 peasant families who, after a failed uprising against their estate owner, were forced to relocate to the island. Lyø’s current population is descended from these 24 families, with many generations having owned the same farm for 450 years. The village’s farms were fortifications under the Holstenshuus estate northeast of Faaborg during the period from 1693 up to 1900. Take a trip round the village and enjoy the almost Morten Korchske idyll. Lyø Strandvej takes you back to the harbour and ferry and maybe on to Avernakø. Originally, Lyø belonged to the crown and was a favourite place to go hunting. King Valdemar the Victorious (11701241) liked to go hunting on the island, and it was just during such a hunt on May 6-7, 1223, that he, along with his 14-year-old son Valdemar the Young, was captured by the German Count Henrik of Schwerin. The king was imprisoned for three years and had to buy himself free by relinquishing several of his North German possessions. Place names on Lyø such as Kongens Made and Grevens Dyvelstykker refer to the King’s capture by the Count.

Follow Sinebjergvej on the right towards Horne through Bjerne.
Horne church In Horne it is possible to visit Funen’s only round church, built by Valdemar the Great around 1170. It is also Funen’s largest village church, which in former times was the home church for the huge feudal estate ”Brahesminde” in the time of the Empire. This is also where the movie ”Adam’s Apples” was filmed. Continue past the church along Søren Lundsvej and left on Vesterballe towards Egsmark and left on Egsgyden with a beautiful view of the sea and Lyø. There is also a public beach (stone) at Horne Sommerland, a summer house area (turn down Lyøvej). Continue straight out of Egsgyden, further along Sønder Hjørnevej.

The view from Bjerne Langgyde to Faaborg
The hill tour – The South Funen Alps Info Box Distance 33 km Every year, more than 300,000 guests visit the ”South Funen Alps” Svanninge Hills and Svanninge Mountains north of Faaborg for hiking, horseback riding, running and sporting events. Difficulty: This tour has many climbs and descents. The trip therefore requires you to be reasonably fit. The roads are narrow and asphalted with little traffic. The route is suitable for narrow tyres. Suitability for children: There are few dangerous stretches of road, but the tour is very hilly with big climbs and is therefore not suitable for younger children.
Head east along the harbour to the roundabout, turn onto Diernæsvej past Faaborg Miniature Town. Follow Prices Havevej towards Diernæs. In Kaleko you pass Denmark’s oldest watermill. The trip goes along Smedebakken on the wide cycle path towards Diernæs. At the church, turn left onto Mosetoften towards Korinth. Follow the road signs up the first real climb until you reach the forest edge. Stop and enjoy the view of the South Funen archipelago. If you’ve caught your breath, walk into the forest. On your right, you’ll pass Holstenshuus’ old park complex, filled with secret places and ruins. Further on, on your left, you’ll pass the mysterious Sortesø, which is Funen’s largest bog lake, which, with its acidic brown moss water, has a very different animal and plant life.
Korinth, Sollerup and Trente Mill You hit the A8 Reventlowsvej shortly before the Korinth village sign. Shortly after, turn left towards Sollerup and Gærup. Follow Gærupvej and later Sollerupvej where the Danish Nature Agency is located. There are nice walks down to Arreskov Lake (Funen’s largest lake) or up through the Devil’s Gorge to the left. If you are mountain biking, you can turn left and follow the marked paths into the forest. Cross the A43 Odensevej and follow it to the overview sign, where you turn right on Ny Stenderupvej (dirt road, otherwise you ride to the T-junction). Follow the road to the right.
10
On the top of the hill there is a rest area with tables and benches as well as a nice view of Arreskov Lake. Continue
through Ny Stenderup and shortly after the village sign, turn left towards Håstrup. Shortly after, you pass Trente Mill, which also offers a nice stopover with the ”Kiss the Frog” nature experience hosting exhibitions and loan equipment for children. Take a walk between the mill’s lakes and find Saint Oluf’s well.
The Queen’s View, Trebjerg and Håstrup Turn right onto Trentevej in the direction of Håstrup. The road changes its name to Stenlund and winds up and down to the west. Suddenly the landscape opens up with a magnificent view of the South Funen archipelago. To the right is a rest area called The Queen’s View and to the right a small path leads up to Trebjerg, which is one of Funen’s highest points at 128 metres above sea level. It pays to make this trip, at the top the local council has set up binoculars so you can study the magnificent view. From here the trip quickly descends towards Håstrup, which is a charming village with many beautiful half-timbered farms. Continue through the village around the church, follow the Pallesgyden road towards Millinge. Ride along Præstevænget, turn right onto Stenbækvej and immediately left onto Skovgyden and Østerbyvej towards Faaborg. Idyllic Brobyværk and surroundings
The Queen’s View
Distance 28 km. The trip is an 8-figure trip through the highlands north of Faaborg.
Church and Brandes Sønder Broby Church in Sdr. Broby by Brobyværk in Midfyn dates from around 1200. There are remains of frescoes in the apse that originally consisted of a picture series with scenes related to the birth of Jesus. The altarpiece, cut in gold leaf, is by visual artist Sonia Brandes. From Sønder Broby Church, drive straight past the cosy, traditional Danish village inn, Brobyværk Kro, and right onto Pontoppidansvej, which continues as Allerupvej. Turn left onto Stensbjergvej. At the junction at Bjerget / Søbovej turn right on Søbovej past Søbo Sø and Hovedgården Søbo.
Søbo Manor house
Trente Mill
Joachim Henriksen Reventlow built Søbo in 1442. The farm and the lake are today private property.
Shortly before Ny Stenderup you pass Trente Mill. Here is a good place to take a break, it is a great experience to walk around the mill’s lakes and find Saint Oluf’s well. There are both good resting places with campfires, as well as a small nature museum and an environmental centre, where you can borrow equipment to explore the surroundings. In the forest around there are three shelters you can rent on the website www. bookenshelter.dk
Follow Søbovej and turn left onto Jordløevej. Turn right onto Håstrupvej and straight onto Haastrup Bjergvej. Turn left onto Stenlund. Just after the turn is a resting place with a very beautiful view, The Queen’s View.
The Queen’s View and Trebjerg On the other side of the road at the rest area, which is popularly called The Queen’s View, a small path leads to Trebjerg at 128 metres above sea level, thus the highest point in South Funen. In 1977, Queen Margrethe and Prince Henrik visited Faaborg. On the way back from a visit to the manor house Østrupgaard, the royal couple drove past the ”entrance” to Trebjerg, and there they stopped to enjoy the view. The Queen urged the county officials to make a space right there so people could go up there and have their lunch and enjoy the view. In 1979, the county then purchased the upper part of the field and a few years later established ”THE QUEEN’S VIEW ”, as it now stands with sets of table-benches. From Stenlund continue along Trentevej.
12 Søbo lake
After Trente Mill turn left onto Ny Stenderupvej. At the outskirts of the village of Vester Hæsinge turn left onto Vestergade. At the junction of Søbovej / Bjerget, turn right onto Bjerget and left onto Søndervej back to Brobyværk. Brobyværk
Info Box Distance 28 km. The highest point is at the Queen’s View and Trebjerg (128m). Good picnic opportunities in many places on this tour. For children it is a must to take a break at Trente Mill.
13
Castles and Manor houses From the harbour, ride west and at the roundabout along Kildetoften. Just after the roundabout, turn right onto the pedestrian and cycle lane. Continue across Pugesøvej and you will come to Johan Rantzausvej, where you turn left. Ride a short distance on the bike lane. At the roundabout, turn right and at the next roundabout turn right again. At the gas station, turn left onto Vængegyden, towards Svanninge, over the much travelled Nyborg road. At the end of the Vængegyden turn right and immediately then left onto Brahesvej.
Svanninge Church The Church of Svanninge, which dates from the Middle Ages, was very dilapidated when it was handed over in 1834 to the region’s large landowner, Count Preben Bille Brahe. He undertook a thorough restoration and commissioned one of the famous architects of the time, Professor Hetsch, to design the present appearance of the church. At the inauguration in 1838, it stood as a cross shaped church with a high-roofed spire. According to reports, the Count was inspired by the unusual spires of village churches during his travels in Austria.
Because the Svanninge Hills were already known at that time as part of the “Funen Alps” the parish should of course have an “Alpen church”!
The path to the Svanninge Hills Should you wish to visit the Funen Alps, the Svanninge Hills, you can both walk and cycle along the path south of the church up through the hills. If not - you can continue the tour. At the church turn left onto Kirkegyden, continue past the school. At the intersection turn right on Østerbyvej towards Håstrup.
Steensgaard Turn right on Stenbækvej. A little way in you will find a dirt road that leads to the manor house Steensgaard, which today is an ethical, organic farm. The main building that used to function as a hotel is now privately owned and not open for the public.
Østrupgård
Østrupgaard A little further on lies Østrupgaard, which is one of Funen’s oldest manor houses. The main building, a stone house, was built in 1500 and rebuilt four times. The east wing was reconstructed in 1940-1942. The first thing you see is the impressive storage gateway barn with one of Northern Europe’s largest thatched roofs. Østrupgaard is privately owned, but from the road you can see the old stone house. Continue along Østrup and turn left onto Stubbedam, left again onto Radbyvej. At the next junction, turn right onto Stenbækvej towards the village of Millinge.
Hvedholm Slot The current main building was radically renovated in the 1880s. After many years of serving as a nursing home and mental hospital, Hvedholm is run today as a modern castle hotel. Hvedholm
From here continue straight out along Skelbanke. Now you are approx. 80 metres above sea level. Continue straight on Horseballevej. Turn left onto Ny Stenderupvej and ride a short distance before turning left, just after the old Trente Mill, along Trentevej. Continue straight ahead.
Trente Mill 14 Steensgaard
At Trente Mill environmental centre children and adults can try out “Kiss the Frog”, where you / I can explore the natural world with various aids.
Hvedholm Castle
Info Box Distance 33 km. In Funen, Langeland and Ærø there are a total of 123 castles and manor houses, of which only a few are open to the public. However, most of them can be seen from the road. Difficulty: This tour has many climbs and descents. The trip therefore requires you to be reasonably fit. The roads are narrow and asphalted with little traffic. The route is suitable for narrow tyres. Suitability for children: There are few dangerous stretches of road, but the tour is very hilly with big climbs and is therefore not suitable for younger children.
is first mentioned in history in 1475. It was the headquarters of the South Funen Brahesminde estate from 1798-1928. At Hvedholm you can see examples of the lavish lifestyle that unfolded in one of the country’s largest estates in the late 1800s. Back along the avenue, left and then turn left onto Sinebjergvej. Turn left onto Bjerne Langgyde. At the end of the hill turn left onto Bjernevej towards Faaborg.
15
Pipstorn Forest
A trip to the Lakes and Pipstorn Forest Info Box Distance 35 km South Funen’s fantastic natural environment is combined on this trip with an important part of the history of Denmark - among other things the repeal of serfdom and the first school reform. Difficulty: On this trip there are some dirt roads. If you have narrow tyres, you can choose alternative asphalted roads. The roads are narrow with little traffic and there are many hills. Suitability for children: There are few dangerous stretches of road. The route is hilly. The distance is not suitable for younger children.
Ride out of the town at the roundabout towards Diernæs at Faaborg Miniature Town, on Diernæsvej, turn right on Alléskovvej towards Pipstorn Skov/ Holstenshuus.
Lucienhøj and Pipstorn On the way through the Allé forest you should notice the small signs that refer to ancient monuments with a large number of fine long barrows. Turn right towards Pipstorn Forest along Lucienhøj and follow the dirt road until you reach the parking lot. Here there are tables and benches and fantastic views of the archipelago. Pipstorn Forest is known for being one of Denmark’s largest prehistoric burial sites, an exciting place to explore (a separate brochure is available). Holstenshuus
16
Brændegård Lake On the left you’ll see Brændegård lake, which with its 104 hectares is Funen’s second largest lake. Brændegård Lake is known for its cormorant colony and if
you are lucky you might see a sea eagle.
Nørresø Continue straight ahead and you will reach Nørresø on your right. Nørresø is 70 hectares and is beautifully surrounded by forest. A forest road leads around the lake with a fine view of the meandering shore and small islands, starting at the parking lot. It is a beautiful hiking route, which is also suitable for mountain biking, but not ordinary cycling. The lake, up to 6 metres deep, is a typical glacier formed lake where the water fills the lowest parts of this very hilly landscape. Ride a little way back along the road and turn right onto Nybo and Spanget.
The Rhododendron Park Immediately after the agricultural college, just before the road (A8), you can stop cycling and walk along the forest track until you reach an area with over 100-year-old rhododendron bushes, which bloom in May-June. This area overlooks the small lake and Brahetrolleborg Castle.
Brahetrolleborg Castle The castle was built as a Cistercian monastery in 1172. The castle and its garden on the other side of the lake are not accessible to the public. Count Johan Ludvig Reventlow was one of the most notable people during the farmers’ reforms in the late 18th century, when the bondage system of serfdom was abolished. Early on, he himself worked on changes in the relationship between farmers and landlords. He founded the first three elementary schools and the first seminary. The first
of the schools that you ride past is Gærup School Museum as you continue your cycle tour across Nyborgvej to the right on the Viaduct. Turn left onto Fleningevej and right onto Sybillevej, and the Gærup School Museum is on the right hand side. It is open every Saturday from 14-16 (entrance fee). Then turn to the right on Gærupvej, and to the right on Sollerupvej. At Sollerup, where the Forest and Nature Agency is located, you
can take a detour by turning right along the path down towards Arreskov Lake, which is Funen’s largest lake, where there is an observation tower and a raft with a bench by the lake (follow the signs down by the lake). From Sollerup you can choose to follow the cycle route along the gravel road through the Svanninge Hills or follow Sollerupvej up to Odensevej. If you follow the gravel road, you can continue directly along the signposted dirt roads to Svan-
ninge. A little way inside there is a marked rudimentary camp site with tables and a fireplace. Alternatively (on asphalt) follow Odensevej and turn up Ny Stenderupvej. At the sign for Svanninge, turn left onto Gammelskovvej. In Svanninge take the right on Kukkenbjerg and shortly after on the left to Vængegyden. At Nyborgvej turn left and follow the road to the roundabout, where you turn right towards Faaborg.
17
View to Bjørnø at Nab
A View of the Islands Ride out of Faaborg along Svendborgvej. Turn right onto Nabgyden. Further on, you will first find Nab Strand Camping and then Nab Strand on your right hand. At the beach there are toilet facilities and good parking places. Continue on and turn left onto Tværvej. At the top of the hill there is a beautiful view of a row of islands in the South Funen archipelago.
Nakkebølle - movielocation On Sanatorievej, you pass the imposing old Nakkebølle Sanatorium. The site has been used as a backdrop in the movie Solkongen (2005).
View to Fjællebroen
Fjællebroen If you turn right on Strandvejen you come to Fjællebroen with its small harbour. Ice cream, sausages and barbecue food can be purchased at the barbecue bar at the harbour. There is a nice view of Nakkebølle Sanatorium.
18
Konnerup Chokolade Ride back and continue straight on Strandvejen to the village of Vester Aaby. Turn left onto Svendborgvej and a little ahead on your right you will find Konnerup’s Chocolate which is worth a visit. Continue on Svendborgvej and turn right on Bøgebjergvej. After a short distance then turn left onto a cycle and walking path. At the end of the path turn right on Pejrupvej and then left onto Frederiksbergvej.
Holstenshuus Estate Turn right onto Nyhavevej, over the lane crossing and down to the Holstenshuus estate with the main building from 1910 (for visits and short stops - ride along the Slotsalléen, the driveway). Holstenshuus’ park was built as a rococo garden in 1753 by the current owner’s 4 x great grandfather Adam Christoffer Holsten. The park utilizes the hilly landscape to create different spaces in the garden. In the years 2008-2010 the park was renovated with financial support from the Realdania Foundation. More information can be found at www.herregaardshaver. dk. The park is open to the public as a private garden during the day with an entrance fee.
dirt road (fine for regular bikes) where you pass a couple of large graves. To the left, a little down a side road, you see a large shelter building. Many people know the old ten-kroner mill. The mill was built in 1848 as a grain mill and was in operation until 1949. Egeskov Mill is still in use for milling wheat for flour. Volunteers are members of the ”Egeskov Mill Guild”
selling all the flour they can grind in their spare time. When you see the mill blades turning, it is open to the public. Until 1926, Egeskov Mill belonged to the Egeskov Estate. Today, the mill is owned by Svendborg Museum. At Grønnebjergvej turn right and out onto Bøjdenvej (a very short distance), where you’ll turn left onto Egeskovgade.
Egeskov Slot Egeskov is South Funen’s largest tourist attraction and one of the most wellknown buildings in Denmark. The castle was built by the sheriff Frands Brockenhuus and was completed in 1554. At that time, the political turmoil - the Reformation and the count’s feud caused many large landowners to build their homes as hard-to-reach citizens. So too did Frands Brockenhuus, who built his castle in the middle of a lake according to tradition on a foundation of oak and so thoroughly that ”a whole oak forest was placed there”. Hence the name of the castle. Today, the castle is inhabited and owned by Count Michael Ahlefeldt-Laurvig-Bille. From the entrance and via the dirt road, turn right around the castle to Holmegyden. Here turn left. The road will later bear the name Egeskovvej. Turn left (a short distance) along Rudmevej and immediately right onto Volstrupvej. After a long distance - turn left onto Boltinggårdsvej. Turn right again, and now you are back on Svendborgvej return towards Ringe.

Tarup-Davinde Nature Area
22 Tarup - Davinde
The natural environment at Tarup-Davinde has been shaped by years of excavation for raw materials and is constantly changing and expanding. Faaborg-Midtfyn council and Odense council are continuously acquiring new land and recreating the soil layer so that nature can move in again. Therefore, the landscape today is characterized by both newly established natural areas that have just been established, as well as older, well-grown areas.
