Vientiane Capital Attractions 観光スポット

Mekong Promenade & Night Market Located on the Mekong riverfront right in the heart of Vientiane, visitors can enjoy a pleasant walk along the Promenade and get a magnificent view of the sunset at twilight. Here, the local folks partake in many exercise activities. You can also find souvenirs, T-shirts, toys, paintings, coconut drinks and many more products at the Night Market. Chao Anouvong Park is part of the Promenade where one can sit and relax. Every year, the Boat Racing Festival is also held here right after the end of Buddhist Lent. (Map: E-4)

Vientiane Capital Attractions 観光スポット

That Luang A symbol of Laos’s nationhood and the country’s most sacred Buddhist monument, That Luang was built in the 16th century under the rule of King Setthathirat. A symbol of the main stupa appears on the country’s national seal. (Map: K-1)

Patuxai (literally Victory Gate or Gate of Triumph), formerly the Anousavary or Anousavari Monument, is situated in the centre of Vientiane, and was built between 1962 and 1968. (Map: H-2)

Wat Ho Phakeo Built in 1565 as a royal chapel and repository for the celebrated statue of the Emerald Buddha, which the Laotians had seized from Northern Thailand in 1551. The statue remained in the temple until 1778, when the Thais invaded and recaptured it, taking it to Bangkok. The temple was destroyed in 1828-1829 during the Thai sacking of Vientiane; rebuilt in 1936; and restored again in 1993. (Map: G-5)

That Dam Known as the ‘Black Stupa’, many locals believe this mythological structure was once inhabited by a seven-headed dragon (now dormant) that stood to protect the city from the threat of the Siamese. Another tale that does the rounds says that the gold that once graced the surface was taken when the Siamese army ransacked Vientiane back in 1828. (Map: G-4)

Our thanks for the information from www.visit-mekong.com

Wat Sisaket The only temple in Vientiane to survive the sacking of the city by the Siamese in 1828, Wat Sisaket is the oldest and considered by many to be the most interesting of the Laotian temples. (Map: G-4)

Buddha Park (Xieng Khuan) 24km south of Vientiane, Buddha Park is in a field near the Mekong River. The park, as its name would suggest, is littered with religious sculptures and was built in 1958 by the philosopher Bunleua Sulilat who famously combined Buddhist and Hindu philosophy, mythology and iconography.

L’Adresse de Tinay

By Bouphamany Chouramany

A

re you looking for a good restaurant in the heart of Vientiane that offers a great atmosphere, excellent service and of course delicious food? L’Adresse de Tinay might be the place for you, as it serves cuisine created with premium products from the Nice and Toulouse regions of southern France. The chef/owner, who has been working in this industry for 17 years, puts 100 per cent into every dish. He starts by selecting the finest, and sometimes difficult to obtain, ingredients from overseas and domestically. For example, a good mixture of these ingredients for a well-decorated fish dish makes an excellent meal for lunch or dinner. This L’Adresse’s kitchen is full of top-shelf ingredients, making recommendations a difficult task. Whole duck breast topped with homemade duck foie gras terrine and white truffle oil from “Cahors Duck Duet” leads the bill of fare, and is the restaurant’s most popular dish, as it is cooked with only premium ingredients. Another dish that comes highly recommended is

the St-Jacques Scallops, US Cheeseburger Style, a plate of seared scallops and salad, fresh tomatoes, deep-fried onions, gratinée mozzarella, Darphin potatoes, hazelnut with black trumpet mushroom jus, and deep-fried Luang Prabang river weed. What makes this dish special, as its name - StJacques Scallops, US Cheeseburger Style – implies, is that L’Adresse de Tinay serves the prestigious shellfish in burger form, while also ensuring it is a delicate, fine-dining entrée. The restaurant also offers a good value lunch from Monday - Friday between 11.30 – 14.00. Meals start at LAK 80,000, and specials change each day. Now, your search for an excellent dining experience in the city centre is over. Simply stop in for a meal at L’Adresse de Tinay for a most memorable meal. L’Adresse de Tinay is open everyday except Sunday for lunch from 11.30 – 14.00 (except Saturday) and dinner from 18.30 – 22.00. Stay up to date on what’s new at L’Adresse de Tinay by visiting its Facebook page. VISIT LAOS MAGAZINE |

As a Vientiane resident and coffee lover, one thing I’ve noticed over the past couple of years is the growing number of coffee shops/cafés that have opened around the capital, each with its own unique characteristics. Here are a few cafés in Vientiane that I suggest for coffee lovers like me.

Le Trio Roasting Boutique This coffee concept store is run by Nini and Mika, a young couple that really knows their coffee. For starters, they roast the coffee beans in house using the most advanced roasting machine from Germany, making them the first roasting boutique in Vientiane. The coffee is robust and you drink it standing at a classic wood-leather bar placed in front of the shop. So stop by Le Trio Roasting Boutique for your favourite brew on the capital’s lively Setthathirath Road in front of Khop Chai Deu Restaurant next to Nam Phou Fountain. Open: Tue - Sat: 10:00 - 16:00 Tel: 0202 255-3552 Setthathirath Road

Naked Espresso A young Lao man, Pop, who discovered coffee was his passion during a stay in Sydney, Australia decided to open the warm and cosy Aussie style café called “Naked Espresso” on Vientiane’s Dongpayna Road, and brews some of the city’s best coffee. Also on the menu, patrons will find fresh, tasty food with all-day breakfasts and lunch options plus Mixed Berry Panna Cotta and Kahlua Tiramisu highlighting the dessert tray. Open: Tue - Fri: 07:00 - 17:00 Sat - Sun: 08:00 - 17:00 Tel: (+856-21) 454 631 Dongpayna Rd, North Phonsavan

Begonia Café

Begonia Café

The Little House

This excellent yet relatively undiscovered barista specialising in latte and delicious crepe cakes is hidden in Ban Nongbone, Saysettha District. The atmosphere feels more like sitting and having your favourite cup of coffee in a friend’s living room or your own outdoor garden. Along with great coffee, the Begonia Café presents an ever-changing cake menu, giving patrons a different choice every day. Check out what’s new and happening on their Facebook page.

Both local and foreign coffee lovers have long acknowledged Little House as Vientiane’s most charming café, which serves the capital’s finest coffee on Manthatourat Road, a quiet street leading away from the river. The peaceful Little House offers medium or dark roasts made in their kitchenstyle café, alongside a selection of local handmade silk and cotton products to admire while waiting for your coffee. The attentive and friendly staff also offer some of the city’s best sweets. Try the cheese cake, scones with homemade mulberry jam, and the “chocolate ball” truffles.

Open: Mon - Sat: 09:00 - 17:30 Tel: 030 575-7082 www.facebook.com/pages/Begonia-Café Soi 04, Nongbone Rd, Saysettha District

The temperate weather welcomes travellers upon arrival in the capital of Xieng Khouang Province, Phonsavanh, having been relocated from nearby Muang Paek. Xieng Khouang sits 1,000 metres above sea level in hills blanketed with evergreen trees. Renowned for its centuries-old Plain of Jars with their mysterious giant stone containers, Xieng Khouang also presents natural beauty, historical sites, and cultural treasures.

A

ll travellers visit the Plain of Jars, a landscape dotted with hundreds of stone vessels standing a metre or more in size. Dating from 500 BC, little is known about the civilization that carved the stone jars and their uses. Archaeologists theorize that the containers had funerary purposes from evidence discovered in and around some of the jars. Site 1 is the closest jar location to Phonsavanh, and its recently opened visitor centre at the site’s entrance provides information about the history of the jars and province’s tourist destinations. Sites 2 and 3 are close by, and conveniently located on the route to the former provincial capital, Muang Khoun. After exploring Site 3, stop at the Tai Phuan village, Ban Napia, to observe the daily life of the local people. You’ll see women weaving and men making baskets, but this and adjacent villages are best known for their unique hand-crafted spoons and trinkets produced from Indochina

War remnants. The spoons are used locally, while trinkets such as bracelets are sold as souvenirs to local and international tourists. For more information about the dangers from war remnants, especially unexploded ordinances (UXOs) that the local citizens face daily, visit one of the NGOs in Phonsavanh Town. Located on the main road opposite Craters restaurant are the UXO Visitor Information Centre and UXO Survivor Information Centre. The former provides a sombre look at the events leading to today’s situation, while the latter showcases efforts to empower those affected by UXOs. This is accomplished by providing avenues for income generation, such as raising livestock and producing handicrafts. Run by the Quality of Life Association (QLA), the UXO Survivor Information Centre has a boutique selling these goods, such as naturally dyed textiles sewn into laptop and iPad cases.

Still, remnants of its former glory can be visited, such as the large Buddha statue at Phiawat Temple and That Foun stupa, both constructed in the 16th century. Although incorporated into the Lao Lang Xang Kingdom at the end of the 14th century, the Tai Phuan rulers governed Muang Khoun independently and Buddhist arts flourished. The settlements were invaded in the 19th century, when this small fiefdom was incorporated into French Indochina. French colonial administration offices were built

You can still inspect the ruins of colonial buildings and temples that were built centuries ago. A visit to the nearby Black Tai village, Ban Nasy, makes a nice break from the Muang Khoun ruins. Depending on the time of the year, farmers may be planting or harvesting rice. Women cultivate cotton, weaving it into traditional skirt material and headscarves. Textiles can be purchased directly from the villagers or in Phonsavanh Town at one of the handicraft shops. To learn more about Tai Dam life, visit another Tai Dam village, Ban Xiengkho, in Kham District. The centre presents an informative exhibition explaining the history behind unexploded ordinances (UXOs) in Laos, and QLA’s efforts to increase UXO victims’ quality of life. Located just a few doors away from the Mine Advisory Group (MAG) Centre on Phonsavan’s main street, the UXO Survivor Information Centre provides information on QLA’s programmes, and stories of UXO victims they have helped. survivors presentation about QLA followed by a couple of short films on UXO victims, as well as a visitor reading area with a number of books about UXO issues. The “Tree of Life” painted across a UXO Survivor Information Centre wall gives visitors the opportunity to write what “quality of life” means to them, and to attach their notes to the tree. People often stand for quite some time to read the comments, written by other visitors from around the world, before penning their thoughts. The Visitor Guestbook also contains comments from other tourists from numerous countries. Reading the book gives an eye-opening, moving experience along with a deeper understanding into UXO issues and how QLA’s

The QLA provides support to UXO victims after accidents and pays for the cost of treatments. For many UXO victims injured while farming, these accidents mean a loss of their livelihoods. To overcome this, QLA follows up by making home visits to victims and setting up livelihood training courses, such as raising animals or making handicrafts, to help them and other family members earn an income.

Though QLA is only two years old, a capacity-building programme is already in place to help the team continuously learn and improve so that the organisation can achieve long-term sustainability. Xayabury Festivals 祭り

象の祭典

By Bernie Rosenbloom

ow in its seventh year, the annual Lao Elephant Festival N is taking place from 17-19 February 2014, in Sayabouly Town to celebrate the venerable relationship between man

and this esteemed mammal, with the event expected to attract close to 100,000 pachyderm fans. This colourful fete, hosted by the Sayabouly Provincial Department of Tourism, features 60 brightly adorned elephants competing for the prestigious title of “Elephant of the Year”, pachyderm processions and bathing, mahout demonstrations, elephant baci ceremonies, and traditional Monk blessings to pay tribute to the national symbol of “The Land of a Million Elephants”. These rites are followed by live music and dance performances by Lao and foreign artists alongside night markets in a carnival atmosphere. This year, daily trade fairs will start on 8 February, and continue throughout the event. The 2014 festival expects a record-setting turnout, due to easier access from Vientiane. An eight-hour drive on Route 11 along the Mekong to Paklai and a turn north lands in Sayabouly Town, though stretches of the road are under-construction. Revellers can also reach the event by travelling from Vientiane on Route 13 North before turning west at Kasi Town and passing through Luang Prabang’s Xiengngeun District. Several Luang Prabang tour operators and transportation companies offer transfers to the venue. The popular annual Lao Elephant Festival, originally established by the non-profit organisation ElefantAsia in 2008, consistently attracts 10s of thousands of elephant lovers of all ages to the friendly, joyful, and rural setting for this traditional, cultural celebration. Alongside Laos’ Mekong Boat Races, the Lao Elephant Festival ranks among the country’s premier events. The festival also presents an occasion to raise awareness on the plight of the Asian elephant in Laos and on how action needs to be taken now to stop this beautiful species from becoming extinct. Known as “The Land of the Elephants”, Sayabouly is home to 75% of Laos’ 500-plus domesticated pachyderm population, and between 100-150 wild elephants. Accommodation remains difficult to book due to a minimal amount of rooms for the “Woodstock of Elephants” in this rural destination. However, this doesn’t damper diehard festival-goers, who come with tents and vans for a weekend of camping and soaking in the scene. www.sayaboulytourism.com www.tourismlaos.org

Xayabury Festival

Luang Prabang View Hotel By Bernie Rosenbloom

in the greenery and clouds at Luang Prabang View Sleveltay Hotel for the area’s best high, at 800 metres above sea overlooking the UNESCO World Heritage City. Built

in 2010, this contemporary hillside palace blending with the past hovers just 10 minutes over all major sites. Its architecture presents an experience of art heritage with upto-date innovations and style. Take the 54 rooms, from pool villas and terrace quarters to superior and deluxe accommodation, all fitted out with ivory-coloured walls, custom teak furniture, wooden floors, king or twin beds with duvets, and soft and hard pillows. Place this modern and traditional comfort amidst a misty mountain view, with the pool villas presenting 120-sqm infinity pools peeking over the mountain ledge, and you have a winner. Better yet, the Luang Prabang View offers guests a 530-sqm infinity hillside pool with a 360-degree view described as “Heaven on Earth”. When it comes to fine dining, Luang Prabang View hosts the city’s highest restaurant, the SKYY Lounge, which sprawls across the hilltop with a panorama of Luang Prabang’s sparkling night lights and sky’s twinkling stars. Enjoy cocktails and appetizers in the Luang Prabang View’s bar before a quiet open-air meal in a stylish setting of white and blue. The Som View Restaurant presents indoor air-conditioned seating or outdoor dining in a natural breeze. Gallery Asiama 志集

T

ake a journey through Asia without having to board an airplane or coach at Luang Prabang’s Asiama Gallery. Owned and operated by photographer, Alain Menoni, Asiama presents his private collection of Asian antiques and curiosities for sale in Laos’ northern capital. Mr. Menoni has extensively travelled throughout the region, from Himalayan countries to small Indonesian isles, before settling in the heart of mainland Southeast Asia, Luang Prabang, and opening Asiama’s doors in November 2012. Shoppers will find excellent basketry combining different types of bamboo and rattan with a variety of techniques from Laos’ northern Khmu, Katu, and Akha ethnic groups. As chewing betel nuts is a favourite pastime of many Southeast Asians, Asiama displays plenty of betel chewing accessories, perfect for gifts. Lime containers, critical for betel chewing, come in all forms and materials, from lacquered wood to brass and silver. The gallery also offers Nepalese woodcarvings of praying humans, thought to bring protection to its owner, and small figures in ivory or bone, which represent ancestral spirits of island cultures. One common figurine shows both men and women wearing sashes around their waists, thought to bring safety to their daily lives.

Other unique keepsakes on exhibit include brass and silver pendants that signify rank in remote societies of insular Southeast Asia, delicate hairpins and rings from minority groups residing in China, vintage prayer beads from Tibet, and religious statues from India. Mr. Menoni documented his journeys on film, capturing the tranquil aspects of life, which he offers in limited edition black and white photographs on archival paper. His series on Laos and Cambodia are available in postcard form. Humbly calling himself a dealer of postcards, Mr. Menoni’s keen eye presents visitors with a thoughtfully chosen selection of ethnic art from different cultures of Asia. If you don’t have the opportunity to visit Asiama in Luang Prabang, the gallery’s website offers a selection of antiques and photographs for sale. You can also sign up online for Asiama’s newsletter for its latest happenings. Praising Vat Phou

By Bernie Rosenbloom

T

he annual Vat Phou Festival to commemorate Champasak Province’s pre-Angkor UNESCO World Heritage Site will be held from 12-14 February 2014. The date to honour those who contributed to this Lao icon’s historic architecture falls on the 15th day of the 3rd lunar month and coincides with the Buddhist Makha Busa Celebration. Several government departments, organisations, and locals collaborate to put on the longrunning “Boun Vat Phou”, an event that has risen in popularity with a growing variety of performances, attractions, competitions, trade fairs, and demonstrations culminating in a Buddhist ceremony. The list of activities seems endless. Days are filled with elephant and horse processions and racing, demonstrations of ancient Buddhist traditions passed down by generations of locals, parades, and buffalo and cock fights. Sports competitions

include boat racing in small dugout canoes, a game called “Catch Ducks”, volleyball, and pétanque. Throughout the festival, a crafts fair is held to showcase products from southern Lao provinces, specifically Champasak’s nine districts, as well as from Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam. In the evenings, sound and light shows relate local legends, and artists dazzle the crowds with traditional dance and music performances, as local authorities want to maintain traditions and “preserve the sacred sense of the place.” Shows based on traditional Buddhist practices also take place. On the final day, senior dignitaries and religious figures from around the country take part in a traditional Tak Bat (alms ceremony). The Vat Phou Temple compound dates to the 7th12th centuries, and recent research demonstrates
