It’s that time of the year again! From 14-16 April, streets are more alive than ever--It’s Pi Mai Lao (Lao Buddhist New Year) wherein everyone speaks one and only one language, merry-making. Cold water, ice, talc, rouge, colorful cotton strings, red floral-printed shirts soaked wet, loud drumbeats, Pi Mai Lao Festival will bring joy and hopefully, luck, in your journey in the country. Apart from exciting actitvities, the second issue covers new events and new places in Vientiane for you to explore. Just like during Pi Mai Lao, it’s not just about the fun and laughter but also visiting at least nine temples and pray for properity, a new beginning for some, and a joyous year ahead. So gear up for your Lao adventure, and Sok Dee Pi Mai, too!

待ちに待った正月！ 4月14日から16日の3日間、町は一年で一番の賑わいを見せる。ピーマイラオ（ラオス語でラオス新年の意 味）の到来だ。町全体がお祭り騒ぎのムードに包まれる。音楽を大音量で流しながら、人々は白い粉をお
互いの顔に塗りあい、カラフルな花柄のシャツをずぶ濡れにしながら誰かれ問わずに水をかけあって新年
を祝う。ピーマイラオの時期にラオスを訪れれば、普段と違った楽しさを味わえる旅になるはずだ。
また、今号では新年のお祭りの楽しさだけではなく、お勧め・注目のヴィエンチャン観光スポットやイベン
トを紹介する。その一つとして、地元の人々の習慣ではピーマイラオ期間中に一年の幸運と繁栄を祈るた め、9か所以上の寺院を訪れるのだがこちらについても後ほどご紹介する。

A trip to Vientiane is never complete without tasting Phӣ , Lao-style. Phӣ, an original noodle-soup meal from Vietnam, is also a staple in Laos; in every corner, in every turn, there’s always phӣ available. But if there’s one place locals would recommend, that‘s Phӣ Zap.
Phӣ Zap (phӣ ’sep, meaning delicious phӣ) has been in business since 1950s, with the original recipe passed on from generation to generation. The ingredients, from the lean beef and side vegetables (mint, bean sprouts, raw string beans) are fresh and carefully selected to ensure that every bowl is served from the heart. Service is also fast and efficient, as soon as you choose your seat, someone will immediately handover the vegetables and drinks. The small bowl, but as you can see isn’t small at all, is worth 15,000 Kip; while the large one tops at 20,000 Kip. Today, Phӣ Zap has two branches and the owners plan to put up more once they find a good location. From 6AM all the way to 3PM, Phӣ Zap is ready to serve you.

着したもの。 ラオスでもあちこちでフーのお店をみかけることができるが、その中でも地元の人々に人気な のが Pho Zap（フォーセーブ）だ。
フォーセーブ（ラオス語でおいしいフォーという意味）は1950年創業、世代を超えて秘伝のレシピを受け継 いでいる。赤身の牛肉から作った特製ダレ、付け合わせの野菜（ミント、もやし、インゲン）は新鮮で念入り に選別されており、 フォーはひと碗ごとに心をこめて作られている。サービスも迅速で行き届いており、客 が席に着くとすぐに付け合わせの野菜と水がサーブされる。
小サイズで（実際まったく 小 とはいえないほどのサイズなのだが）15,000kip。大サイズで20,000kip。現在
フォーセーブは2店舗経営で、オーナーはよい場所を見つけ次第さらに店舗拡大を計画している。営業時 間は朝6時から午後3時まで。

Luang Prabang (LPB)… A favorite city of numerous travelers, including me! It’s not that I’m in love with this city just because it has become famous and won the first place of the Top City for the Wanderlust Travel Awards five times, but it is where I find real relaxation --away from the hustle and bustle of city life. The safe, fascinating place that reminds us how beautiful our culture and traditions are. You will be welcomed with warm and pleasant smiles. The period of Pi Mai Lao celebrations is the most cheerful time. Traditional observation of locals, eating various unique local food, shopping at the very attractive night bazaar, meeting and celebrating together with people around the world like friends traveler-bracket you belong to. I used to wonder why LPB could possibly win Top City over other famous cities around the world. But I realized during my first visit that it actually was not just the place or city that won many hearts --it’s the many things that impressively fulfill what we expect to get from a trip. It really isn’t just Luang Prabang.

Pi Mai Lao is not just about the fun in the streets, it’s also the time to revisit the Temples to give thanks and pray for a great year. Now, it is believed that during the new year, you have to visit at least nine temples, say a little prayer. Here’s a quick guide while you’re joining the rest of Laos in celebrating! Either bike around or walk ‘til the sun goes down, these are the temples that will surely catch your eye. Tip: Wherever you decide to start, follow the direction where the Buddhas are facing. They will all lead you to one place --the Presidential Palace.

Let’s Talk Silk ラオスのシルク製品・織物
We can see the textile and silk products embroidered with traditional motif around the market. There are varieties of intricate motif such as Naga (mythical beast, looks like dragon with many heads), Garuda (mythical bird), diamonds, human, etc. If you look closely, these designs tell a story about Lao culture and heritage. Silk is multi-purpose, for making sin (Lao traditional skirt), for placemats, for scarves, table runners, among others. The textile called Phabian (traditional style) can be decorated on wall as interior. Meanwhile, the textile of Samnuea, Houphan (Northern Laos) has delicate embroidery; everyone is deeply fascinated with it. ここ数年観光地として急速に注目を集めつつあるラオスだが、 ラオスのお土産で喜ばれるものは何か。 私の個人的経験から言うと、 ラオス産のシルク織物や刺繍製品だろう。 ラオスの伝統的模様をモチーフに
した美しい手の込んだ刺繍がほどこされたものが市場のあちらこちらで見かけられる。ナーガと呼ばれ
る龍の神や、ガルーダと呼ばれる神鳥、その他菱型、人型など様々な伝統的模様があり、 ラオスの古くか
ら伝わる信仰、文化、思想が垣間みることができる。 大きさや形により用途も様々。 ラオスの伝統衣装で
ある巻きスカート 「シン」を作る用のものや、 ランチョンマット程度の小さなものもある。パービアンと呼
ばれるラオス式スカーフは壁にかけてインテリアとして飾ってもよい。特にラオス北部のサムヌア地方で 作られた布は刺繍が非常に繊細で、思わず息を呑んで見とれてしまう素晴らしさだ。

Prices range based on design and origin. Delicate ones are about USD60 and can reach USD100. Simple designs can be bought for USD10. There are also fabrics made of banana fiber. Its delicate shade is popular among tourists. Tourists can find cheaper one at the Morning Market or Khuadin Market. Souvenir shops and textile shops downtown also carry fabulous pieces. 値段は様々で、刺繍部分が多く手の込んだ物は60ドルぐらいから何百ドルもするものまで、簡単なもの

客にうけている。 タラートサオやタラートクアディンなどの市場では比較的安く購入できる。市内に点在 する専門店であれば市場より価格は高くなるが洗練された上質のものを選別して置いているため、お土 産物を探す時間があまりない観光客は専門店での購入が便利だ。

The Red Carpet was all set for one spectacular night! The Ministry of Information and Culture, in collaboration with Sengdara Communications, presented the 2nd Annual Lao Music Awards (LMA2) at the National Culture Hall, in honor of the dedicated artists and music labels in the country. It was a huge night for the artists, as well as for the fans, who have expressed their support through constant voting and online campaigns. Special performances from upcoming stars and veterans were likewise showcased, much to the fans’ delight. The LMA highlights not only the blossoming recording industry but also celebrates the country’s music and artistry. 2012 promises an even bigger LMA! レッドカーペットはこの素晴らしい一夜へと続いていた―― 情報文化省とセンダラコミュニケーションとの共催によ り、文化会館にて第二回ラオミュージックアワード（LMA２）が開かれ、 ラオス全国のアーティスト、音楽会社を表彰し た。この日はアーティストだけでなく、オンライン投票などによってアーティストを応援したたファンにとっても特別な 夜であった。新人歌手・ベテラン歌手による素晴らしいパフォーマンスがファンを満足させた。LMAは今まさに発展途 中のであるラオス音楽界にスポットライトをあて、 またラオスの音楽・芸術を祝福するものとなった。2012年のLMAは さらに盛大な規模で行われることは間違いないだろう。

The recent tragedy in Japan destructed billions-worth of livelihood and infrastructure and thousands of lives. Initiatives from all over the world have been established to give a helping hand to the victims, and Laos is no different. Youth groups are organizing small fund-raising activities from which proceeds serve as small contributions to the efforts in restoring the towns affected. Together, in our little ways, we can say a little a prayer and give a piece of our hearts to Japan. 先日東日本において発生した地震・津波は多くの人々の生活や１万人以上の尊い命を奪い去った。世界 中の国々で、 日本の被災者へ救いの手をさしのべようという動きが起きたが、それはラオスにおいても同 様であった。今回の災害に心を痛めた若者たちにより、自ら企画した小規模ではあるが心のこもった募 金活動が行われた。
