ABOARD
Step back in time and learn, see, and experience how steam powered engines drove the industrial revolution. Lackawanna County’s history, much like the steam engine locomotive, is coal-powered. At Steamtown National Historic Site you can learn the history of the steam engine, see the giant locomotives that helped expand our nation, hear the sensational true stories of those that rode, worked for, and built these beautiful machines. You will feel the weight of history as you tour this national museum and will be amazed at the ingenuity
of the engines and the turntable. This place sounds awesome, but wait, there’s more! You can ride the trains! That’s right, Steamtown offers rides and excursions of various lengths to several different destinations. They also offer seasonal rides like their Fall Foliage Excursion and their Holiday Express. Steamtown National Historic Site is educational, historic, exciting, adventurous, and most importantly, fun for the whole family.

THE
HERE
The SWB RailRiders are the Triple A affiliate of the New York Yankees and are the pride of Lackawanna County. The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders have played in the International League championship series in each of the past three seasons, winning the Governor’s Cup and the Triple A National Championship in 2016. The successes they have won are only outdone by the triumphs their astounding players have had upon their promotion to the Bronx. The Yankees recent resurgence has been sparked by the play of young men who once called Lackawanna County home. Having the opportunity to see tomorrow’s Major League All-Stars earn their pinstripes is a must for anyone who visits Lackawanna County from April to September.
8
The RailRiders Organization prides itself on offering family-friendly affordable entertainment. Their schedule is packed with fun promotions, theme nights, celebrity appearances, giveaways, and Friday night fireworks. Located at the base of Montage Mountain, in Moosic, PA, the RailRiders call beautiful PNC Field home. Loaded with fun for the whole family, PNC Field is a “must see” for anyone visiting Lackawanna County. You can enjoy the game, take the kids to the giant bounce house, meet the hilarious mascots, or visit one of the many concession stands and sample great food and drinks. You don’t have to love baseball to have an amazing time at PNC Field!

If you think high definition is awesome, you’ll be astounded as you see the vibrant colors of the various species of fish swimming in crystal blue waters. Wind your way through the Frog Swamp and the Snake Den. Visit the Lizard Lair before braving Gator Alley. Leave the reptiles
14
behind and continue your adventure in the Shark Reef. Get your hands wet in the touch tanks and pet some stingrays in Ray Bay. Completely immerse yourself in Catfish Cove, where you will find yourself surrounded by fish on all sides. There are so many incredible creatures and interactive displays, your kids will have an educational experience they’ll never forget. IN
HISTORY
Explore 300 feet beneath the earth through an anthracite coal mine originally opened in 1860. Stick close to your guide as you walk through the winding underground gangways and rock tunnels past three different veins of hard coal. Listen as they explain the fascinating methods used and the heroic efforts involved, as men and boys worked to heat a nation and fuel the conversion of our economy from agriculture to industry.
HERITAGE The Pennsylvania Anthracite Heritage Museum focuses on the history of hard coal mining, its related industries, and the immigrant culture of northeastern Pennsylvania. The Museum tells the story of the people who came from Europe to work in the anthracite mining and textiles industries. As you tour the facility you will experience the lives of proud people who endured harsh working conditions yet carved out communities filled with tradition. The diverse collection highlights life in the mines, mills, and factories. Visitors are welcomed into the families’ homes and neighborhoods with a moment of reflection in the kitchen, a visit to the pub, or a seat in a local church. 17

SANTA PARADE
The Scranton St. Patrick Parade is the largest annual celebration in Lackawanna County. Since 1962 the St. Patrick’s Parade Day Association of Lackawanna County has conducted this nationally acclaimed parade the weekend before the Feast of St. Patrick (St. Patrick’s Day). “Parade Day” as it’s known locally, is one of the largest St. Patrick’s parades in the country, regularly attracting 150,000 spectators. The parade boasts over 12,000 participants, including Irish groups and societies, bagpipers, high school and string bands, elaborate floats, Irish dancers, and much more! The festivities begin with a mass at St. Peter’s Cathedral, followed by the Brian P. Kelly 2 Mile Footrace, with the parade kicking off shortly thereafter. The parade route is marked in green and begins on Wyoming Avenue in front of St. Peter’s Cathedral, proceeds through the streets of downtown Scranton, and finishes in front of the Reviewing Stage on N. Washington Avenue. Everyone is Irish on Parade Day!

Lackawanna County’s most unique festival only takes place in two places in the world: The sister cities of Jessup, Pennsylvania, and Gubbio, Italy. Brought to Jessup in 1909, St. Ubaldo Day was a way for immigrants from Gubbio who largely settled in Jessup to feel connected to the home they left behind. For over 100 years, this celebration has brought thousands of spectators to Lackawanna County to join in the fun. This wonderful tradition, which takes place on the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend, is an exciting combination of color, culture, pride, and faith that the whole family will enjoy. While you are in town, be sure to check out the carnival that accompanies the St. Ubaldo festivities. You’ll find delicious homemade food, rides and games for the kids, and nightly entertainment. Experience St. Ubaldo once, and we bet you’ll make it an annual tradition too.
32
One of Lackawanna County’s most delicious traditions is La Festa Italiana, held annually on Labor Day Weekend. The four-day celebration of culture, cuisine, and music brings together people of all ethnic backgrounds from near and far. “La Festa,” as the locals call it, attracts over 100,000 people annually to Courthouse Square in downtown Scranton. You can eat amazing Italian delicacies, cannoli, a wide variety of pizza, cannoli, homemade pasta dishes, and did we mention the incredible cannoli? La Festa Italiana isn’t just about the food — enjoy live entertainment, shopping, Sunday night fireworks, and you seriously have to try the cannoli!

NIGHTLIFE When you come to visit for a weekend, you’ll want to experience the liveliness of the nightlife. Friday and Saturday nights are when the streets of downtown Scranton come alive with people looking for a good time. If a cozy bar with options for inside and outside service sounds like your style, then check out Backyard Ale House, where their outside patio is covered and heated in the colder months. Want to dance the night away in a fun-filled, club-like atmosphere? Levels on Linden St. is the place for you, filled with colorful lights, fun DJ’s and live bands. Live music thrives in our spread of downtown bars, especially in Harry’s, The Keys, and Ale Mary’s, who love to support local bands and host live entertainment frequently. Unique events are always occurring at The Bog, usually with a theme, which lets you leave with a story. If you’d rather spend a weekend night in a relaxed environment to grab a drink and enjoy good conversation, we have you covered. State Street Grill in Clarks Summit allows for a modern and comfortable atmosphere to unwind. A staple comfort zone, which always provides for good drinks and good times, is Julia’s Old Forge Hotel. There is a place for everyone to enjoy their weekend and make a memorable night. From an entertainment-packed bar/club scene, to a calmer conversational pub, you are guaranteed to find what you’re looking for. COOPER’S SEAFOOD HOUSE
