Go on a cycling holiday Denmark offers more than 11,000 km of sign-posted national and regional cycling routes. Thus, you have lots of routes to choose between if the bicycle is your means of transportation on your holiday. The cycling routes are marked with a white bicycle on a blue background together with the number of the route in question. In several locations, Randers Municipality is crisscrossed by these routes, which can be used both for a day trip and perhaps for a longer tour around the municipality, the region or the country. Cycling route 29 between Randers and Silkeborg is well suited for a cycling holiday with children as the route follows a closed-down railway line. The route crosses only a small number of roads with other forms of traffic, and, moreover, the route is also free from any steep hills.

From the Gudenå to a bathing lake
The 158-km-long Gudenå is Denmark’s longest watercourse. It rises in Tinnet Krat north of Vejle and falls into Randers Fjord. On its way water is added to the Gudenå from a number of smaller streams, and its drainage area covers a total of 2,600 km2. From way back to prehistoric times the river was the main means of transportation, because it was at that time far easier to transport goods on the waterway than on land. Many archaeological finds witness that already the Stone Age people established settlements along the river. This tour follows the Gudenå along the cycling path from Randers to Langå. From here the tour goes to Fussingø Slot, where you can enjoy a refreshing bath in Fussing Sø. Fussingø Slot is used for exhibitions and concerts throughout the year. During the summer it is possible to join one of the guided tours and learn more about the history of the castle and park. Practical information Parking: Brotoften in Randers C,

Around the fjord
Randers Fjord is approx. 30 km long from Randersbro to the fall into the Kattegat. On the first long part from Randers the fjord is more like a small river, and it is not until Uggelhuse that you can call it a fjord. This tour leads all the way around the fjord, at the northwestern side and on the eastern and southern side, after you have crossed the fjord at the fall in Udbyhøj on board the cable ferry. However, it is also possible to shorten the tour by crossing the fjord on the little ferry between Mellerup and Voer approx. halfway. Forests of reeds characterize the banks of the fjord, and in some places along the fjord it is possible to harvest the reeds and use them for thatched roofs and rush shoes.

Naturpark Randers Fjord Randers Fjord is almost 30 km long and is the mouth of the river Gudenåen. Together with the fjord itself, the forests of reeds and beach meadows along the fjord are home to a rich bird life, and the fjord also contains a great variety of fish species. In several places in the area, tables and benches, shelters and birdwatching towers can be found, which the guests in the area can freely use. In two places in Naturpark Randers Fjord, you have the possibility of crossing the fjord by ferry. The ferry sails across the fjord from Mellerup to Voer and at Udbyhøj. The Mellerup-Voer ferry service can boast of being the oldest royally licensed ferry service in Denmark dating back to 1740 and is also the smallest ferry in Denmark. Where Randers Fjord flows into Kattegat, you can take Denmark’s only cable-drawn ferry at Udbyhøj. Further information about Naturpark Randers Fjord: www.visitranders.com

Children’s route around Randers
The length of this route has been adapted to suit children, and they will probably think that it is both a fun and enjoyable route. It starts and ends by Randers Regnskov and goes north of Randers in a curve. Along the route, one passes through the residential neighbourhoods of the town as well as through both beautiful nature and small and large sights where one can take a break. It is a good idea to bring lunch and enjoy it by the side of the road, on a bench or by the shelter site in Nordre Fælled, which is situated about halfway along the route.

Nordre Fælled is an old military training terrain where the engineer corps has left behind clues in the landscape in the form of small hills, channels, and small dugout ponds. The mountain and hill route
There are no actual mountains in Denmark although we have Himmelbjerget (“The Mountain of Heaven”). Compared with the mountainous landscapes of our neighbours, the 147 metres of Himmelbjerget do not look like very much. Still, cyclists touring the area in and around Randers have a task ahead of them here. The hilly landscape offers several challenges, and this route gives a taste of the height differences one can experience in the area south of Randers. For example, when one rides from Randers along Tebbestrupvej, one must climb to a height of 54 metres, on Laurbjerg Bakken one must overcome an ascent of 83 metres, and on Houlbjergvej south of Langå the climb is even 94 metres. We recommend doing the route clockwise to get the best views! Practical information Parking:

Geocaching for the entire family Treasure hunting with GPS or a smartphone – geocaching – is a game for the entire family, and a fantastic way of experiencing and learning about Randers and the nature, culture, history and geography of its closest surroundings. Geocaching is a fun activity for all age groups, you can easily get started, and no special qualifications are necessary. The treasures (geocaches) are small plastic boxes, which contain information about the place, little knick-knacks, and a logbook, in which you can write your own little greeting. To bring joy to others who may find the cache, you can take one of the little items in the box and replace it with a new one. In Randers, you can also go on a GeoTour, which is a specially planned geocaching route. The GeoTour opens in the spring of 2017. Around Randers
The town of Randers was founded in that location where it was easiest to cross the river Gudenå when one was going southward through Jutland – or vice versa. The name Randers means “the town on the hill by the mouth of the river”, and in the Viking Age a little trading post emerged here. Since then, the town has thrived on trade, thanks to the fertile upland and the good possibilities of transportation on land and on the river. The many rich merchants of the town built beautiful half-timbered houses, and many of these can still be found in the old centre of the town where today pedestrian streets and a selection of exciting shops can be found. This route provides excellent possibilities of exploring the surroundings of the town to the north and south of the town.

Around the remains of the Gudenå river delta
For thousands of years, just before running out into Randers Fjord, the river Gudenåen formed a delta. Farmers made hay in the wide river valley, and the area was also frequently used as a grazing are for cattle. However, it frequently occurred that river overflowed its banks so that the meadows and surrounding fields were flooded, and in 1951 this lead to the removal of the delta. Dikes were built so that the Gudenå was cut off from the meadows of Vorup Enge and later from those of Hornbæk Enge. When the water was pumped away, it became possible to sow grain here. In 2003, the process of reclaiming the great wetlands along Gudenåen close to Randers was started. This route leads all the way through the old delta, and along the way it is possible to study the bird and animal life from two birdwatching towers. CHILD-FRIEN

In the meadows of Vorup Enge, a flock of European bison graze all year round. They used to be common throughout Europe, and up until the beginning of the 19th century wild flocks off bison lived for instance in Poland. The population of bison is a part of an international breeding program.

In the meadows, you can see different kinds of old Danish farm animal breeds grazing in the summertime. Apart from grazing, the animals are also part of a preservation program, the purpose of which is to preserve old species of domestic animals for posterity.

The meadows Vorup Enge – nature close to town The 119-hectar-meadow area, Vorup Enge, is located less than 500 metres from the centre of Randers. Here you can experience one of Denmark’s most beautiful natural areas on an around five kilometre-long tour along bicycle paths or footpaths. The meadow area was recreated in 2003, and since then Randers Regnskov has worked together with Randers Municipality and the owner, Aage V. Jensens Naturfond, on the running and presentation of the area. In the summertime, Randers Regnskov preserves the eastern part of Vorup Enge with the almost entirely extinct black pied Jutland cattle. The western part is grazed by all year round by a herd of European bison, the largest land mammals of Europe. Naturally, the tour also offers a chance to experience the wild animals and plants of the area, perhaps the colourful kingfisher, a grass snake or, if you are very lucky, an otter. All year round, you have access to birdwatching towers, tables and benches if you wish to enjoy a packed lunch in the beautiful scenery. The Hvidsten Group
The Hvidsten Group was a group working with the reception of weapons drops, associated with the Danish resistance movement during the German occupation of Denmark 1940-45. The group emerged around innkeeper Marius Fiil from Hvidsten Kro (Inn), and it was tasked with the reception of explosives, ammunition, and weapons, which were dropped from English airplanes and were intended for use by Danish resistance groups. The group continued receiving drops until the Gestapo arrested most of its members on March 11, 1944. The German court martial sentenced eight of them to death. Among those executed were the innkeeper, his son, and his son-in-law. This route leads past some of the locations associated with the Hvidsten Group and its work during the Second World War.

Rune stones and other ancient monuments
The rune stones from the end of the 900s and the beginning of the 1000s are the first historical sources, from which it is possible to get an impression on print of our ancestors’ achievements. However, Denmark’s history begins a long time before the rune stones; from the time, which is called the prehistoric time, we have a large number of relicts of the past. In Randers Municipality alone there are approx. 350 visible and preserved ancient monuments, first and foremost grave mounds and dolmens from the Stone Age and a large number of grave mounds from the Bronze Age. From the historical time we have – besides the rune stones – for instance castle mounds from the Middle Ages and old church sites. The Hamlet Route
It was the Danish chronicle writer Saxo Grammaticus, who told the story about the Jutland chief’s son Amled around year 1200. His uncle, who then married Amled’s mother, killed his father. Amled revenged the killing of his father, but it was not until after he had played dumb and mad, so that the uncle did not begin to suspect him. First and foremost, the story is known from Shakespeare’s play “Hamlet”, which was published in 1630. Shakespeare, however, moved the action from Jutland to Kronborg Castle at Elsinore. Amled is supposed to have lived around the year 500, and when he died, he was said to be buried on Ammelhede at Randers, which is the target of this tour.

In Randers, there are also several long hiking trails to choose from, both along the river, the fjord, and the sea. Trækstien (the towpath) is a hiking trail, which follows the course of the river Gudenåen and where you can follow in the footsteps of the bargemen from Randers to Silkeborg. Length approx. 70 km. Lodsstien (the pilot’s trail) follows in the footsteps of the river pilots from Randers to Udbyhøj Syd. Along the way you will cross Randers Fjord about halfway with the Mellerup-Voer ferry. However, you must show consideration for animals, plants, and other people you meet in nature. Do not litter in nature – this is forbidden. Bring a bag for you rubbish so you can dispose of it properly when you get home. In nature with a dog If you wish to walk your dog in the open, you must have it on a leash. The Protection of Nature Act says so as the dog can be a stress factor to the wild animals of the area or a nuisance for other guests. Specially marked dog parks are open and easily accessible where your dog can run freely without a leash.

Fussingø and Læsten Bakker
This tour west of Randers leads along the Gudenå through the nature area Vorup Enge and past Fussingø Slot with the idyllic Fussing Sø, before you arrive at the preserved nature area Læsten Bakker, where the animal and plant life is remarkably rich. You can experience the birds, the animals and the plants on close range, because a number of public paths lead through the area, and a tunnel makes it possible to watch the animals without disturbing them. The population of the deer park Randers Dyrehave consists solely of fallow deer. Fallow deer have been living in Denmark for more than 1,000 years. The deer in the park descend from a group in the deer park Marselisborg Dyrehave south of Aarhus, which again descends from a group in the park Jægersborg Dyrehave north of Copenhagen.

Along the old railway
Jutland’s first railway was the stretch between Aarhus and Randers, which opened in 1862. The English firm Peto, Brassey & Betts built the railway, and already in 1861 this firm established a factory in Randers, which should build railway carriages. The director of the factory William Robert Rowan got the idea to establish a railway from Randers to Hadsund, and it opened in 1883. It had its own railway station in Fischergade, until the railway was closed down in 1969 The 10-km-long railway stretch, which starts at Dronningborg Hallen and leads through a beautiful scenery over Lem to Spentrup is today a cycling and hiking path, and you follow this path on the tour. From Spentrup the tour leads back to Randers via the villages Bjergby and Borup.

In 2009, the farm Syvager from 1872 was converted into apartments, and the farm is a beautiful example of how farm buildings can be reused and re-formed in a way that allows them to still give expression to the original purpose of the village and its buildings.

If you fancy a short detour, you can ride your bicycle to the village of Lem. Lem has a high proportion of houses worthy of preservation, and on the road Lemvej you can see the beautiful, partly covered farm facades surround the road.

Route 12 / 33,0 km
Around the Gudenå
With its length of 158 km the Gudenå is Denmark’s longest watercourse. On the last part before it falls out into Randers Fjord, where the Gudenå is almost a small river, it runs through a very wide river valley with exciting and adventure-rich scenery. It is this last part from Langå to Randers, which is the goal of this tour, as you cycle on either the northern or the western side of the river on your way out, whereas the tour back goes along either the southern or the eastern side of the river. Among anglers the Gudenå is famous for its fine population of salmon, but if you would to try your luck with the fishing rod, you can also easily catch for instance zander, pike or perch.

The engineering company Christiani & Nielsen was responsible for the planning and construction itself. The bridge has a design, which is fairly advanced for its time. The bridge has three spans and the intermediate piers are made in a framed structure with slanting pillars to carry the arches.
Amtmand Hoppe s Br o
The bridge Amtmand Hoppes Bro near Langå is probably the oldest road bridge made from iron concrete in Denmark. The bridge was finished in 1905. The bridge which led the highway across the river Gudenåen is named after the prefect Johan Hoppe who was the head of the local council.

Angling in the river Gudenåen and Randers Fjord In the river Gudenåen and in Randers Fjord, the angling is fantastically varied. The transition from the Gudenå river system to the salty fjord waters provides a wealth of fish species to chase. There are many fishing spots between the green reeds, both along the river and the fjord. If you want to rent a dinghy for your fishing on the fjord, you can do so in the experience centre Kyst- og Fjordcentret near Voer.
