DIRECTOR'S MESSAGE JANUARY 2024 BY ERIC SANDE, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

HAPPY NEW YEAR Happy 2024! I hope you enjoyed the holidays and you were able to be with those who bring joy and happiness. Each year seems to go by faster and faster, especially during the holidays and each year when I look back, I am amazed at what the Chamber has accomplished. The accomplishments are made possible by the collective efforts of so many incredible people, the Chamber team, our dedicated Ambassadors, our many volunteers and of course our amazing Board of Directors. We are blessed to work with and represent our many members who we consider – our friends and our family. Are you ready for 2024? As we start the New Year, we are excited to take on new projects and continue to make Redmond the best it can be. The Chamber is eager to follow the Oregon State Legislature through the short session and see how we can engage our members with issues, which may affect businesses. The Legislative Session will begin on Monday, February 5 and run 35 days ending on Sunday, March 10. We will keep you up to date if there are important issues for you to follow. This is also an Election year and we will navigate what comes our way throughout the process. June 30, 2024 is also when our contract with the City of Redmond ends, for providing tourism services for City of Redmond. The City has formed a new Tourism Committee to advise the City Council on how best to spend dedicated tourism funds. The City will issue an RFP sometime during the first part of the year, in which the Redmond Chamber and CVB will be eligible to apply. Whatever the outcome, the Redmond Chamber of Commerce and CVB will continue to be the best at representing our membership and community.

MEMBER BYTES A Smile For Kids 2023: A Year of Challenges and Triumphs Dear Friends, Supporters, and Community Members, As we close the chapter on 2023, I want to take a moment to reflect on what has been a tumultuous yet transformative year for A Smile for Kids (ASK). The introduction of the new orthodontic Medicaid benefit in Oregon, effective January 1, 2023, marked a significant shift in our landscape. It has been a year of immense learning, adaptation, and dedication as we navigated these changes while steadfastly serving our mission. Navigating the New Medicaid Benefit The new Medicaid benefit brought both opportunities and challenges. Our team worked tirelessly to help Medicaid members, guardians, orthodontists, treatment coordinators, caseworkers, administrators, and state employees understand and navigate this new landscape. Our website and blog became a hub of information, addressing the myriad of questions arising from the 23 different interpretations by coordinated care organizations (CCOs) and dental Medicaid payers. This effort was crucial in mitigating confusion and ensuring that the benefits reached those in need. Continuing Our Core Mission Despite these additional responsibilities, our core mission remained our guiding star. We currently have 113 active kids in braces across Oregon. Our team ensured that these children not only received their orthodontic treatment but also fulfilled their commitments to community service and academic excellence. This in-depth casework and compliance work are the backbone of our program, ensuring not just improved dental health and self-esteem, but also a higher-thanexpected positive health outcome for each child. Fundraising and Community Support The financial aspect of our mission cannot be overstated. Even with generous discounts and inkind donations from our orthodontic partners, the expenses for our active cases approached half a million dollars. This underscores the importance of our continuous fundraising efforts, grant writing, and corporate donation appeals. These funds are vital in creating better health outcomes for our children and, in many cases, their families too. I am grateful for any support we have received since we started the work in 2004, but this year we are all especially happy for every penny donated to ASK. A Holistic Approach to Child Health At ASK, we view each child holistically. We actively look for Health Related Social Needs services, leveraging our network of school advocates, counselors, healthcare professionals, and caseworkers. Our involvement with the UniteUs platform, also called ConnectOregon, allows us to both receive and issue referrals, further enhancing our ability to change lives through a comprehensive approach to each child's health. Looking Ahead to 2024 As we step into 2024, we are poised to move forward more deliberately through our current formation of an additional LLC, with the ability to contract for services with any of the partners who are charged with administering and paying for the new benefit. The resources we are gaining through contracts in the ASK LLC will be instrumental in helping OHP/Medicaid members, with any profits being allocated to ensure continuation of our ASK nonprofit work. We remain committed to serving those who inevitably will still fall through the cracks on the OHP/Medicaid side, ensuring that every child in Oregon can smile with confidence, regardless of social and

financial status. It’s an equity issue for us. In closing, I want to extend my deepest gratitude to each of you – our supporters, partners, and community members. Your belief in our mission fuels our efforts and makes a tangible difference in the lives of Oregon's children. On behalf of Diane, Kasey, Michael and myself, here's to a new year filled with hope, health, and smiles! Kind regards, Christian Moller-Andersen Executive Director, A Smile for Kids The Entrepreneurial Ear Having been an entrepreneur for over 40 years, I understand the value of Mentors and Business Coaches/Consultants in assisting entrepreneurs. CROOKED RIVER RANCH FARMERS & ARTISAN MARKET by Brenda Cooper One of the best things a community can do is to promote their local crafters, farmers, and artisans, which is described as a person producing something using a traditional method, for example breads, wines, and crafts. These are the people who share their trades which add to the personality and spirit of the community. Farmers markets have a long history that dates to ancient times. According to some sources, farmers markets originated in Egypt over 5000 years ago, where farmers and craftsmen met in urban spaces to sell their goods. Purchases were usually trades rather than money transactions, and goods were valued by weight. The first market opened in the United States in 1730 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. It was a favorite place to gather and socialize for their community. This is exactly what Crooked River Ranch has going seasonally April through the month of December. Each month it is held on the 1st and 3rd Saturday, from 9:00am-3:00pm, located in the CRR Old Fire Hall at Shad and Hill Rd. Vendors must be residents of Crooked River Ranch and pay a $5.00 vendor fee. There are approximately 12-15 vendors each time. The booths range from eggs, to jams, salsa, breads, homemade jewelry, and soaps. There are beautiful metal and wood crafts, sewn bags, crocheted winter hats and scarves and so much more. This event has 3 volunteers that give of their time to organize the market and do so for the local

residents of the ranch to have the opportunity to make money and display their talents whether they be a useful item or fun and decorative. With the use of the CRR Old Fire Hall, the market is able to stay open in challenging weather conditions and in the summer months they can expand out into the parking lot. The common theme of the Farmers & Artisans Market is you are buying more than an object. You are buying 100’s of hours of failures and experimentation. You are buying days, weeks, months of frustration and pure joy. You aren’t just buying a thing—you are buying a piece of heart, part of a soul, and a moment of someone’s life. Most importantly, you are buying the artist more time to do something they are passionate about. We will see you there in April 2024!

CREATING COMMUNIT Y AND GROWTH IN REDMOND BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT: SUNWEST BUILDERS

To provide a better understanding of who is behind REDI (Redmond Economic Development, Inc.), this article features perspectives from one of the supporters of REDI’s mission and vision to build prosperity through community and business development. We wish to thank SunWest Builders for sharing this article that helps tell the REDI Story through a business perspective. For 35 years, SunWest Builders has been synonymous with many industrial and commercial projects throughout Central Oregon. It’s hard not to drive around Redmond and not encounter a project completed by SunWest Builders. Some of the over 140 projects the Historic Redmond Hotel, AmeriTitle, BasX, St. Charles Emergency Facility, and Medline. “Being located here in Redmond and being a part of the community has given us the opportunity to build a variety of projects here,” says Steve Buettner, President/Owner of Sunwest Builders. “We are proud to be a community builder in Redmond.” So why Redmond? Steve along with his wife Toni are raising their family in Redmond. Steve says it’s a great community to be a part of and it just

felt natural to locate his business here. “Redmond, along with REDI (Redmond Economic Development, Inc.), provided a very friendly business environment and made the decision easy,” he says. “Locating our office in the Airport Business Park was strategic to serving the Central Oregon region.” During the early years of SunWest Builders, Steve says the company was looking for a place to locate in Central Oregon. REDI was able to step in and help locate the business, and provide guidance along the way as SunWest went through initial site feasibility studies, construction budgets, etc.

Builders has been very busy with construction in the region but is also excited to collaborate and educate those interested in the trade industry along with other construction leaders, trade partners, and Central Oregon Community College. “There is an essential need to grow the industry by educating younger generations about the amazing long term career opportunities the trades provide,” Steve says.

Above all, SunWest Builders is proud of the work it does and of its reputation in the community. “Our breadth of projects has helped us be successful for 30+ years and we look forward to many more,” says Steve.

REDI even helped introduce the company to the late Jean Wood, developer of the Airport Business Center. “REDI, along with Jean, had a vision for the area that fit our goals of being part of a growing and business-friendly community that we could immerse ourselves in,” says Steve. “Supporting REDI has been one of the best investments that we have made over the years.” And over 30 years later, the success and growth of the Redmond community can be seen throughout the city.
