IT'S FEBRUARY! Northern Light Festival for Valentine’s Day The Redmond Northern Lights had a successful start to the second season. With Halloween in October on the historic Presbyterian Church (Now Grace and Hammer) and during the holiday season, showing on City Hall (starting on the Friday after Thanksgiving). The Halloween show was an entirely new show and the Holiday show incorporated last year’s show plus new animation. The third installment of season two will be this month, centered on Valentine’s Day. Again, the animation will be projected on City Hall, using both last year’s, as well as new animation and music. Showings will begin on Friday and Saturday nights starting on February 4, 5 and 11, 12. We are working closely with the Redmond Downtown Association and others to coordinate with the First Friday and Sweethearts Stroll. Keep your eyes open for details. We hope everyone will come see the FREE Valentine Redmond Northern Lights shows and check out all the great businesses and shops Redmond has to offer. We have big plans for the future of the Northern Lights program. The final show of season two will take place in March and coincide with St. Patrick’s Day and a Pub Crawl. Be sure to check in with the Chamber website and the Redmond Buzz for all the details.

ECONOMIC update By: REDI Staff

IS IT THE GREAT RESIGNATION OR SOMETHING ELSE?

Everywhere you turn there is a news story about “The Great Resignation” and the impact it is having on businesses and the economy. Oregon Employment Department’s Regional Economist, Damon Runberg, would argue a different shift has taken place, especially in Central Oregon. There are five common themes happening all together: reshuffling, churn, remote opportunity, pent up demand for goods and services, and lastly, retiring baby boomers. The Great “Re-Shuffle” “Yes, the rate of job quits across the country is far higher than normal; however, these folks are not quitting to leave the labor force,” he points out. “Most who are quitting are doing so for a different job. The record high demand for labor has given workers more leverage to seek positions with better working condition, more flexibility, etc.” Runberg points out instead of the “Great Resignation,” this movement should be called the “Great Re-shuffle” since workers are moving onto different jobs while staying in the labor force. For example, the work force in Deschutes County is much higher today than at the onset of the pandemic. In November 2019, the labor force was 97,000 and as of November 2021, it is closer to 100,800, an increase of over 3,500 (+3.7%). “Now, the labor force is simply the number of employed and unemployed in the market,” says Runberg. “Perhaps the labor force has grown due to more people being unemployed? Yes, ‘unemployed’ are up compared to before the pandemic

(+1,375) from 2019 levels; however, the vast majority of the labor force growth has been from workers in the ‘employed’ category (+2,200).” Churn So why does it feel as though workers have disappeared if the labor force is supposedly larger? Runberg says another way to look at the current employment situation might not be a re-shuffle, but maybe a churn. “Churn is a normal component of the labor market as nearly everyone at some point in their career has quit a job for a new opportunity,” he says. “However, the higher churn rate today is costly to employers as they lose productivity and hiring can be time consuming.” The churn is having a significant impact on lower wage jobs as workers are finding better career opportunities. As Runberg says, there is a pinch in the market, but it is not being felt evenly across all businesses. Remote Work Opportunities Maybe local workers are also seeking more remote work opportunities. It’s no

secret that Central Oregon is an expensive place to live. According to a recent LinkedIn study which looked at the job search trends of workers in metropolitan areas across the U.S., job searches by workers in Deschutes County disproportionately skewed towards remote jobs. “In fact, roughly 43% of all Deschutes County resident job searches on LinkedIn were for remote jobs, the highest share of any metro areas in the nation,” Runberg says. “Why are local workers looking for remote jobs at such a high rate? It is expensive to live here and remote jobs skew towards higher wages.”

measure the tightness of the market is the number of unemployed workers (labor supply) per job ad (labor demand). In 2018, we had roughly 3 unemployed workers for every job ad available. For most of 2019 that ratio was closer to 2 unemployed per job ad. As of November 2020? We had dropped to 1.8 unemployed workers per job ad. A very competitive job seeker market.” Retiring Boomers

Demand for goods and services

Moreover, Runberg says there is no light at the end of the tunnel for the labor market to loosen. Expectations were already there for a tight market due to large numbers of baby boomers forecast to retire.

The other elephant in the room is the pent-up demand for goods and services. As consumers spend more money it increases demand which translates into the need for more workers.

“However, I anticipate fewer issues finding workers as the demand for labor will likely ease resulting in less competition for the small number of available workers,” he says.

“The demand for labor by local businesses is growing faster than our labor force to the point that we are now seeing roughly the tightest labor market we have ever seen,” says Runberg. “The best way to

In the recruitment process, well composed job descriptions link to specific behavioral based interview questions that search for strong alignment of competencies, personalities, and passion levels. When the employee is hired and onboarded, job descriptions can be linked to specific training and development around the specific elements of the job. Job descriptions also clearly point to how performance on the job can be measured and how that in turn can be communicated in regular performance feedback and in a meaningful, annual performance appraisal. MARKETING tips By: Connor Cubic

The world of marketing is constantly evolving as technology advances, and customer behaviors evolve. A major trend that we have been seeing over the last few years, that has continuted to accelerate, is the use of social media and consumption of short form video content and digial media (Instagram Reels, Tik-Tok). Photos, video, and grapic art help to quickly capture your audiences' attention and relay valuable information more effeciently than a text heavy article or advertisement. So how do you get started with engaging these audiences, and creating visual content for your brand? First you want to make sure that you have an up to date Facebook Page, and Instagram account for your business. I recommend starting here as these platforms are very easy to learn, and can reach a wide range of audience demographics.

What I have found to be the most challenging part of social media marketing for small businesses, is that of creating

and gathering content. If you have little experience with photography/videography, it may seem like a difficult task. However, don't stress. We all have the techology to make great visual content right from our mobile phones, and there are thousands of informational videos on YouTube, that can help teach you some of the basicis of content creation and marketing your business on social media. If you are looking for higher quality photos and video, I would recommend outsourcing content creation to a local content creator with a visual style that will fit your business. Most importantly though, is to tell your story, and find your unique voice. What sets you apart? Share the expereince of your business with potential customers online, so they can see how great you are at what you do. As always, feel free to reach out for more information info@visitredmondoregon.com

EMPLOYEES ARE HARD TO FIND RIGHT NOW.

It’s no secret there’s a labor shortage in Central Oregon, and Redmond is not immune. In an effort to assist Redmond Businesses, the Redmond Chamber of Commerce offers a Job Posting site called “Work in Redmond,” which is a place for our Chamber Members to post any and all work for which they’re seeking candidates. However, this isn’t just a plain, stale site with the same old listings. As an integrated

part of your existing Member Profile, candidates will have the opportunity to learn about your business as they browse listings, which gives them the context and confidence that they are making the right decision by applying for your job. Posting your open position couldn't be easier. Simply login to your Member Portal Profile on the home page of visitredmondoregon.com, then click on the jobs tab,

put in your information, and click Create. Your job will be visible from both your Member Directory page as well as from the main workinredmond.com page. If you need help logging in, feel free to either email: info@visitredmondoregon.com, or call the office at 541-923-5191. We encourage everyone needing employees to add their job posting as soon as possible. As of time of print, we've

had position submissions from: Rimrock Trails, New Priorities, Cinder Butte Meat Co. Opportunity Foundation, Hayden Homes, Regency Redmond, Habitat for Humanity, Edward Jones, State Farm, A+ Cleaning, Kitchen Tune-Up, Cardinal Services, BASX Solutions, Yellowknife Wireless, Bethlehem Inn, Hardenbrook Hardwoods, and more.

The raw emotion and relatable angst in Yolk follows a Korean-American fashion student as she battles her own demons and ultimately reconnects with family. It was a great book to get lost in while enjoying bits of Korean inference, culture, and tongue." The Witch’s Heart by Genevieve Gornichec JeaLinda P.: "A powerful retelling of the Norse myth of Angrboda and her entanglements with Loki, this novel confirms the strength and power of women. Gornichec reignites this ancient tale with thoughtful and artistic composition as she touches on complex familial dynamics, motherly anguish, and deeprooted friendships. A blend of mythology, fantasy, and tragedy designed to empower readers to envision their own destinies." Klara and the Sun by Kazuo Ishiguro Le B.: "An elegant masterpiece of beautiful melancholy, this short novel from the author of Never Let Me Go and Remains of the Day follows a robot named Klara as she struggles to understand the world around her. A perfect fable for the isolating times that we find ourselves in."
