DIRECTOR'S MESSAGE NOVEMBER 2023 BY ERIC SANDE, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
WELCOME HOLIDAYS Hello November! I know November has 30 days in it, but with all the preparations for the Holidays the days just fly by, so ready or not the Holiday season is upon us. Be sure to mark down the annual Redmond Chamber of Commerce’s Starlight Parade, to be held Saturday, November 25th. This year’s theme is “How the Grinch Stole Christmas”. The Grinch and the all the little Who’s are so popular and should transform our parade and downtown into Whoville. Parade applications are available online at www.visitredmondoregon.com. On parade day, registration will open at 3pm at the corner of 6th and Dogwood, judging will take place at 4 p.m., and the parade starting promptly at 5 p.m. The parade route will proceed down 6th Street from Dogwood to Forest. This is a great way to bring friends, family and co-workers together for a fun festive event. Entries are judged in five categories: Commercial, Children, Organizations, Animal/ Mounted and Individual. Also, the Redmond Christmas Tree lighting will happen immediately following the parade at Centennial Park in the heart of the Holiday Village Market. Santa arrives at the Plaza to do the honors of lighting the tree and holding court to visit with all the boys and girls of all ages. The Starlight Parade, Tree Lighting and Holiday Village Market have become an exciting tradition and the official kick-off to the holiday season in Redmond. Be sure to pack up the kids, put on your heavy coats, fill a thermos full of hot chocolate, and be a part of this exciting event. NEWS FROM

Crooked River Ranch Coyotes Den Disc Golf Course By Brenda Cooper The Crooked River Ranch community has many activities to offer residents and visitors with one of those activities being ‘Disc Golf’. There are so many positive benefits to playing this sport. The mission statement of Central Oregon Disc Golf [CODG] is … to promote, create and support spaces for people to participate in Disc Golf. Central Oregon has 14 registered courses listed on UDISC within a 50-mile radius, that include Black Butte, Prineville, Madras and LaPine, Redmond and Crooked River Ranch. Disc golf is played much like golf. Instead of a ball and clubs, though, players use a flying disc or Frisbee®. The sport was formalized in 1976 DGA [Disc Golf Association] by Ed Headrick and his son Ken Headrick and shares with golf the object of completing each hole in the fewest strokes (or, in the case of disc golf, fewest throws). Disc golf is designed to be enjoyed by people of all ages, genders, and economic status, making it a great lifetime fitness activity. Because disc golf is so easy to learn, no one is excluded; players merely match their pace to their capabilities and proceed from there. As for equipment, just a disc is all you will need. Comfortable shoes for walking are suggested but no gloves or other equipment cost is involved. One of the great features disc golf shares with golf is that they are both played in beautiful settings. A ninehole disc golf course can be established on as little as five acres of land, and a championship-caliber 18-hole course uses 30 to 40 acres. Disc golf courses can coexist with existing park facilities
and activity areas, such as here on the ranch, the disc course is combined with the Steel Stampede motorcycle tracks, dog walkers and trails for horse riders. Multipurpose use for the whole community at minimal expense for upkeep. In fact, most of the labor and materials are volunteer and donation based. Disc golf provides upper and lower body conditioning, aerobic exercise, and mental stimulation. Concentration skills increase by mastering shots and negotiating obstacles, and players of limited fitness levels can start slowly and gradually increase their level of play. Scheduling is also flexible: A casual round takes one to two hours and may be played alone, eliminating the difficulty of scheduling tee times. Perhaps the greatest attribute of the sport is the low barrier to entry. A professional quality disc costs roughly $15, and it only takes one for basic play. Disc Golf is a year-round sport that can be played any time of the year. The Crooked River Ranch course was designed and built in 2013 by residents Sean Remer and Jim Tobish using Steel Stampede funds raised during the annual Steel Stampede Motorcycle event as well as donated labor. This course is a modular course which means it expands in the summer and retracts in the winter, it is 3 miles long and has a course rating through UDISC 4.1 out of 5. According to Tobish, the main expense for CRR course is maintaining for fire abatement and regular mowing for the ease of playability. This is all done through volunteers and donated equipment. Funny fact, each of the disc baskets
on the ranch course are named after things associated with CRR such as the Telegraph, Trading Post, Smith Rock Resort, Sandbagger. In speaking with Jim Tobish, his unlimited knowledge and experience flows out through his passion for the sport of disc golf. Some of the future goals for the course are better playing surface, larger CRR tournaments, a playground for kids with a gazebo, 6 more Tee-Pads (where players begin a hole) at approx. $200 each and updated disc baskets. Coyotes Den Disc Golf or Disc Golf Central Oregon on Facebook is a great way to read up on this group and to learn more of them and just maybe get you out to the Crooked River Ranch course to give your disc [frisbee] a throw, you may get hooked on a new to you sport. And if you desire is to lean about the national level of competition, the Professional Disc Golf Association website is an excellent resource. As Jim says, “It’s an excuse to get outside and enjoy the scenic beauty that the Crooked River Ranch community has to offer”. We will see you and your disc soon on the Coyotes Den Disc Golf Course Tee Pad enjoying the exercise and beauty of the scenery around you.

Ah, the Christmas Parade in downtown Redmond, or as I like to call it, the perfect opportunity for all those cheerful Whos to gather ’round and celebrate their precious holiday spirit. I can already hear the carols, see the twinkling lights, and smell the festive treats wafting through the air. And what’s this? The theme of the parade is none other than the Grinch Who Stole Christmas? How utterly delightful! I suppose they think they can capture my essence in a parade, reenacting my attempts to put a damper on their festive cheer. But let me tell you, no amount of twinkling lights or jolly tunes can truly capture the depth of my Grinchy brilliance. They can have their parade, their floats, and their merry little spectacle. But mark my words, their holiday joy won’t last long – I’m always ready to put a wrench in their plans. After all, I am the Grinch, and no parade can change that! The Redmond Chamber of Commerce is bringing you the Redmond Starlight Parade with this years theme being “The Grinch Who Stole Christmas”. This lighted night parade is such a blast and we can’t wait to see everyones floats and Christmas cheer. Keep in mind that this parade is at night and lights are HIGHLY suggested for your decor. After the parade, listen for the High School choir singing carols in Centennial park as you make your way over to watch Santa light the town christmas tree! Join in on the singing or check out the vendor market! Sign ups are live online and will be open until the 18th!
