Rjukan

-det eneste stedet i Norge hvor alle kan nü toppen – the only place in Norway where everybody can reach the highest peak

Impressions of Rjukan: A series of commissioned portraits

People, Nature, Architecture by American photographer Nancy Bundt

Rjukan: A photographers perspective. Given the privilege to spend time in Rjukan I discovered a bigger, grander display of nature than I expected. I am not a mountain climber or even much of a hiker and there I was on top of Gaustatoppen several times, basking in the cold wind and filling myself with that far-reaching, long and exquisite view. Something I could never do without Gaustabanen. After that, driving and walking over the terrain in other parts made me more aware of the small details. The colors of the grasses, the moss and changing leaves, the varied landscapes and the reflections on the waters, both delicate and powerful. Everytime I came to Rjukan I saw more, met more of its people, deepened my understanding of its history, enjoyed and appreciated being there more. I am not saying this only because they asked me to photograph. I think Rjukan is a special place. A place that can be enjoyed by people from Norway or abroad. A place for families or lone travelers. A place that can awaken an artist´s soul, entertain the children, delight just about anyone. See for yourself.

Few things can beat a hike in the mountain at this time of year.

Hardangervidda

Forests and mountains stretch endlessly and invitingly before hikers and bikers – whether you want a rugged workout or a leisurely walk or ride.

For inne i fjellet går Gaustabanen.

200 years ago the mountain of Gaustatoppen and the Rjukanfossen waterfall were discovered as travel destinations. Tourists and artists from all over Europe flocked to the region to admire these giants of nature. The fact that access was difficult made the sights even more attractive. Today almost anyone can reach the peak of Gaustatoppen at 1883 meters (6,178 ft) above sea level: inside the mountain is Gaustabanen, a cable railway that takes you to within a few meters of the top of the mountain. This is one of a kind in Norway.

In autumn, the air becomes crisp and cool and nature puts on its magnificent many-colored coat

.

Snart kommer melisdrysset pü Gaustatoppen og høsten gür over i en ny vinter.

And soon the gentle drizzle of white on top of Gaustatoppen suggests that an other autumn will turn into winter.

In spring, while skiing conditions are still excellent at Gaustatoppen, melting snow will turn the rivers into challenging whitewater kayaking venues for those who want to get their adrenaline pumping.

Vemork

The town’s best claim to fame may be the events immortalized in the film“Heroes of Telemark”: it was here that saboteurs prevented the Nazis from acquiring heavy water that would have been vital in the Third Reich’s attempt to produce a nuclear bomb.

We convey the stories of the historical events year round at Vemork.

Rjukan

The town was built on the manufacture of artificial fertilizer that would contribute to relieving world hunger. This industrial past is so unique that Norway is currently applying for the inclusion of Rjukan on the Unesco World Heritage List.
