”The town was surrounded by the ramparts, whose gate keys were kept by the abbot at night. On the seashore and at the mouth of the harbour, crowning the summits, there were several watch towers and to the west, standing on a hill, the monastery dominated the landscape. The dark walls of its Romanesque church divided into three naves, the towers, the walls and curtain walls, shaped it into a fortress.” J. Pella i Forgas, 1883 Historia del Ampurdán

”It started in the 11th century as a scarcely inhabited place in the great loneliness which surrounded the monastery, master and usufructuary of the neighbouring mountains up to Cap de Creus and the fisheries, but in the 12th century and later in the 13th century Roses headed towards historic greatness with the development of fishing.” J. ”Nowadays Roses is one of the most powerful and finest strongholds of Catalonia; King Carles I built and fortified it due to its privileged situation and the safety of its bay, where a whole fleet can be at anchor sheltered from both southern and northern winds.” P. Le Pautre, 1693 Gravat “Plan de la ville de Rosas”
