P
rovincial Executive of Sport Jan Markink and local councillors Nathan Stukker (Apeldoorn), Gerrie Elfrink (Arnhem) and Ben van Hees (Nijmegen) are delighted that the local governments are collaborating to facilitate such a terrific sporting event. “I’m proud to be hosting the Giro d’Italia in Gelderland. It gives me the chance to show the whole world how beautiful and diverse Gelderland is,” says Markink. “The Netherlands is the ideal country for cycling and Gelderland is the leading Dutch cycling province. With our top-class accommodation options, great roads and splendid countryside, we have all the necessary ingredients to get the Giro off to a fitting start.”
HOW IT ALL BEGAN
ALIA
Jan Markink played a key role in securing the Giro d’Italia for the region and he has spent more than a year working on the project. The idea originated together with Cees Priem from Libéma Profcycling during a cycle race in Apeldoorn. The province quickly contacted the municipalities of Apeldoorn, Arnhem and Nijmegen to explore the opportunities for jointly organising this major cycling event in Gelderland. After a number of meetings with RCS Sports, the organiser of the Giro d’Italia, Markink gave the Giro directors a
guided tour of Gelderland in April 2015, showing them potential routes and interesting climbs. It was subsequently announced during an international press conference held in Italy in June that the world’s second-largest cycling event would be starting in Gelderland in 2016.
ECONOMIC BOOST With a TV audience of 800 million viewers in 192 countries, the Giro d’Italia is one of the largest sporting events in the world. The start of the Giro d’Italia will considerably boost the economy in Gelderland, as an event of its kind generates visitors, spending and media exposure.
CYCLING FEVER! The Giro event in Gelderland goes beyond merely the start of the race. In addition to the economic impact, it will also provide a boost to sport, recreation and tourism. It is a fantastic and unique free-of-charge event for everyone. Companies, associations and schools can also benefit from the cycling fever generated by the Giro Gelderland by organising special activities such as Giro cycle routes, ‘Piazzas’ in local neighbourhoods, the Giro Cycle Campus, Italy-themed lessons, design competitions, special Giro deals including meals/overnight stays or themed cultural activities related to Italy, pink or cycling. e have designed safe, appealing and easily accessible routes which will successfully put Gelderland on the map in the eyes of millions of people around the world. The element of water plays an important role in all three stages. The rivers, dikes, bridges and floodplains are the common thread running through all the routes. The routes form natural links between the various regions, towns and municipalities they pass through. They demonstrate why we can rightfully take pride in Gelderland. Nature, culture & heritage and infrastructure are all displayed in their full splendour. 6
The Giro d’Italia 2016 will get underway on Friday 6 May in the Veluwe from the Velodrome Omnisport in Apeldoorn. Both indoors and outdoors, this venue offers plenty of space for cycling fans, local residents, tourists, media professionals and businesses to watch the start of the 9.8km time trial. The cyclists will race alongside the Apeldoorn Canal and through stunning parks towards the city centre, finishing on Loolaan. This makes it easy for visitors to
On Saturday 7 May, the second day of the Giro Gelderland will get underway with a neutralised route starting from the Kerkplein square in the centre of Arnhem. The stage will highlight striking features of Gelderland such as the De Hoge Veluwe National Park, the Rivierenland area with its abundance of flowers, and

8 MAY NIJMEGEN - ARNHEM
On Sunday 8 May, the third stage starts in Nijmegen and finishes in Arnhem. The neutralised start from Arnhem’s Grote Markt will once again enable everyone to get a good look at the cyclists. Via a charming part of the historic old town, the stage gets underway for real just after crossing the new ‘De Oversteek’ bridge. After passing Fort Pannerden, part of the New Hollandic Waterline of water-based defences, and Castle Doornenburg the racers can really gather pace from Zelhem on their way through the Achterhoek region. The Giro Gelderland will of course also pass through the Veluwezoom National Park with a sprint climb at the Posbank hill. The finish is back in Arnhem on Velperbuitensingel.
HUNDREDS OF SIDE EVENTS IN 99 DAYS As soon as it was announced that the Giro d’Italia 2016 would start in Gelderland, the excitement began to build among local businesses, schools, cycling clubs, scouting, music clubs, organisations and residents. They enthusiastically set to work on all kinds of initiatives to put their cities and towns on the map, based around the following themes: Giro, cycling, Italy or the striking colour of pink. The Side Events programme includes more than 500 activities in the run-up to the start of the Giro d’Italia on 6 May.
THE ‘99 DAYS’ CAMPAIGN The event programme starts on 28 January 2016 when the 99-day countdown begins to ‘La Grande Partenza del Giro d’Italia’. Over the course of these 99 days, Gelderland will gradually turn pink and we will show off our province to maximum effect. The events programme supporting the Giro Gelderland comprises a large number of themes, including: cycling tours, ‘Piazzas’ in local neighbourhoods (similar to street parties), cycling lessons/clinics, Bike Art, exhibitions, ‘Mercatos’ (markets) in city parks, design competitions, ‘Italian weeks’ at primary schools and a ‘Giro Gelderland experience’ roadshow. The activities relating to the Giro d’Italia can roughly be grouped around the following themes: knowledge and innovation; active and health; art and culture.
SPONSORING AND HOSPITALITY For one week in May 2016, Gelderland is turning pink. Thanks to the start of the Giro d’Italia, the attention of international sports fans will be on our beautiful province. The TV images of the event will be seen by millions of people around the world, revealing to them our tourist attractions, rivers and floodplains, theme parks and other highlights in Gelderland. But TV is not the only way to watch the Giro. The event is already shaping up to be a fantastic celebration which everyone can support, especially along the route. Several spectacular events are scheduled, including the official team presentation, the prologue and the two stages. Apeldoorn, Arnhem and Nijmegen – plus the 18 municipalities in Gelderland through which the tour will pass – will be playing host to hundreds of thousands of cycling enthusiasts. We warmly welcome you to the Giro Gelderland! For more information, see visitveluwe.com/giro-ditalia

ENDLESS OPPORTUNITIES FOR CYCLING One of the best things about cycling in the Veluwe region is the sheer diversity. As you pedal through woodlands and over heaths, fens and rocky ridges, you will wonder at nature’s scale yet tiny details will also catch your eye. In fact, the Veluwe could possibly be the best region for cyclists in the whole of the Netherlands.
I
t offers terrain to suit all tastes, whether you want to take a leisurely bike ride making use of the network of cycle-route intersections or you’re looking to work up a sweat on your mountain bike or racing bike. From flat routes to hilly ones and woodland trails to paved cycle paths, the Veluwe has it all! Stunning natural scenery, challenging short climbs, exhilarating descents, dodging obstacles such as a shepherd and his flock of sheep or slaloming around Scottish Highland cattle! We’ve already selected the prettiest scenic routes across the Veluwe for you. You’ll find even more great routes on visitveluwe.com/cycling We hope you enjoy cycling around and don’t forget to share your experiences and the beautiful photos you take en route on Facebook or Instagram by adding #visitveluwe!
You can start the route at different spots, such as Coda Museum or Paleis Het Loo. Intersections: 59 – 42 – 41 – 38 – 10 – 09 – 08 – 63 – 60. Start: Various starting points such as Paleis Het Loo, Koninklijk Park 1, Apeldoorn or Coda

On the way, you can stop for a rest and enjoy magnificent views of the best the Netherlands has to offer: not just woods, but also the floodplains of the IJssel. Eerbeek is known for the old craft of papermaking. Everything still takes place in the village centre: living, working, running businesses and making paper. This helps to make Eerbeek the paper centre of Europe. There are countless country estates and beautiful gardens to be found along the route in Brummen. You can use the VVV app to find the best spots.

You will come across audio spots, marked by a large boulder, at many places all over the area. At each audio spot, you can listen to eye-witness accounts of the impressive events that happened during 1944-1945, told by civilians, members of the allied forces and German soldiers. THE VELUWE: WATER IN ABUNDANCE The Veluwe region is not just about woodland and heathland; you can find sun, sea and sand here too! In addition to many natural springs and streams, there are more than 100 small lakes in the area, many of which have evolved into lively recreational centres. The Veluwerandmeren, a series of interconnected lakes in the northwestern corner of the Veluwe, are among the best-known spots for watersports and the shallow water makes them ideal for beginners too.
T
ake a refreshing dive or test your balance on a wakeboard, kneeboard or water skis. The lakes bordering the Veluwe between the old and the new land have become an Eldorado for recreation and watersports. The beach at Strand Horst is even one of the best kite surfing and surfing sites in the Netherlands due to its convenient location and shallow water. But the beaches at Heerderstrand and Strand Nulde, the recreational pool at Bussloo and the Kievietsveld are also fantastic recreational areas for watersports beginners. And the Veluwe has even more to offer watersports enthusiasts. Sail on an original Elburger, Spakenburger or Kamper botter and get a sense of the former Zuider Zee fishing industry. Go out to sea with your own sailing boat, go skûtsjesilen, rent a little sloop or board an excursion boat in the old fishing harbour in Harderwijk. Vibrant marinas and unique berths will make you want to stay as long as possible. Enjoy the beautiful architecture, interesting museums and attractions in the lively historical towns and villages. That’s the abundant water of the Veluwe!

TO DO | WATERSPORTS
The Veluwemeer’s shallow water makes it a unique spot for watersports. It is one of the safest places to learn all sorts of sports such as windsurfing, Stand Up Paddling (SUP) and sailing a catamaran. Windsurfing is currently experiencing a revival of its glory days of the 1980s. Those who were surfing enthusiasts then might want to find out what has changed. And the answer is: a lot! Sails have become lighter and more aerodynamic, and the boards have a completely different shape. These improvements to the equipment have made it accessible for everyone and windsurfing has truly become a fun sport. It is difficult to describe how it feels to toy with the elements of water and wind, to move forward driven purely by the power of nature
combined with your body. You’ll just have to experience it for yourself! Even when it’s not windy you can still have a great time on the water by trying a SUP board. And the most athletic form of sailing is a catamaran! Hanging in the trapeze, sailing on a hull not only looks spectacular but it also feels fantastic and is more about technique than strength. You can learn to sail alone in only four days. Watersports centre Windy Waters can be found at Droompark Bad Hoophuizen on the Veluwemeer Lake. There they will help you to get out on the water safely and with the appropriate equipment.
Strandparc Nulde offers endless possibilities for watersports enthusiasts and people who want to enjoy a day, a weekend or a longer holiday with some active relaxation. As well as providing a modern campsite with a restaurant, the leisure park has berths for boats on shore or at jetties and a slipway. You can also rent pedal boats and canoes to explore the beautiful area more energetically. After all that exertion, you can enjoy relaxing on the beach or outside Restaurant Afslag Tien at the water’s edge. More information: strandparcnulde.nl

The tension mounts, and you take a few deep breaths. You’re on the verge of embarking on a trail through one of the Netherlands’ most spectacular and most exciting woodland climbing centres. Your amazing adventure in the heart of the countryside will require you to navigate challenging bridges and climbing nets, sturdy ropes and a crazy zip wire.
The woodland climbing centres in the Veluwe offer for plenty for younger visitors to do too. At most of them you can join in providing you are over 1.20m tall, and the Klimbos Veluwe climbing centre even has a trail suitable for infants! Although you only have to be 1.20m tall for the children’s trails,
DO YOU DARE TO GO?
f you enjoy a challenge and you’re not afraid of heights, the Veluwe has no less than four woodland climbing centres! Each one offers several trails of varying degrees of difficulty, making a trip to a woodland climbing centre an adventurous day out for the whole family! Because the trails also differ in terms of height and number of obstacles, there is always a suitable challenge – even for more experienced climbers.

DID YOU KNOW... • You must be at least 1.20 metres tall to follow most of the climbing trails? • The Veluwe’s highest route takes you up to 20 metres above the ground? • The Klimbos Garderen centre is not only fun but also educational? • All the Veluwe’s woodland climbing centres use the very best safety equipment? • There are special trails for children? • On the ‘Challenge’ route you move from tree to tree on a skateboard?
EN - GARDEREN An active day out for all the family: climbing, clambering and descending at Klimbos Garderen. The Netherlands’ safest woodland climbing centre is situated in the heart of the Veluwe. Klimbos Garderen has six different routes of various degrees of difficulty. Inexperienced climbers can enjoy the Fun trail while more adventurous visitors can pit themselves against the Challenge route, which involves moving from tree to tree on a skateboard or dangling on a bungee rope. For the true daredevils among us there is the No Limit route, which ascends to no less than 18 metres above the ground at its highest point, and the newest route is a dizzying 20 metres high!
For an added bonus at Klimbos Garderen, look out for the educational elements that have been incorporated into all the trails, making it not only a fun day out but also an educational one! Along the route, you learn all kinds of interesting facts about nature, the Veluwe countryside and woodland heritage, based on information provided in collaboration with the Dutch Forestry Commission. As a result, the woodland climbing centre is also the ideal venue for children’s parties. Providing you are over 1.20 metres tall and weigh max. 120kg you can choose from the wide selection of climbing trails.

KLIMBOS VELUWE - APELDOORN Klimbos Veluwe in Apeldoorn could be called the mother of all woodland climbing centres. It offers no less than 8 different climbing adventures and around 120 different transitions ranging in difficulty and height from 2 metres to a lofty 18 metres. The Junior Klimbos is aimed at younger visitors to Klimbos Veluwe. It is for children who, if they stretch out their arms, can reach the lifeline hanging at 1.30 metres high but can’t quite reach the 1.60 metres needed for the other routes. But there’s nothing childish about the two Junior routes: they both take you between 3 and 5 metres off the ground! The ‘Peuter Parcours’ is specially designed for the under-7s: a mini climbing route at 50cm above the ground which

features no less than 10 different bridges! Those looking for the real deal will also find plenty of serious challenges at Klimbos Veluwe. The Discovery route starts at around 3 metres high, but if you want to push yourself to the max then the No Limit route is for you. This is the most challenging course at Klimbos Veluwe and reaches heights of up to 18 metres!

KLIMBOS HET BUITENCENTRUM - OLDEBROEK The natural woodland climbing centre in the ‘t Loo Oldebroek forest is a real tree-top adventure featuring a challenging obstacle course at between 5 and 10 metres above the ground. The different elements and levels of difficulty ensure that everyone – from beginners to advanced climbers – can enjoy an exhilarating experience! Klimbos Het Buitencentrum works with a permanent safety system so that each climber is continuously attached to a safety wire, from the moment they take their first step upwards to the moment they arrive back on terra firma. After a thorough safety briefing, you’re raring to go as you embark on your climb. At the top you have to navigate obstacles 30

of varying levels of difficulty, which keeps your adrenalin pumping for the duration of the trail. In addition to the climbing trail, there are also trees and ‘Jacobs Ladders’ to climb and you can even do a freefall jump from a height of 10 metres! The Klimbos Ermelo outdoor climbing centre is surrounded by woodland in the splendid Veluwe region. People have been coming here to push back their boundaries, under the watchful eye of professional climbing instructors, for more than seven years. The four routes vary in height and degree of difficulty. Before embarking on your adventure, you first receive a briefing about the use of the 100%-safe system for carefree climbing. The first trail you can follow is called The Family. It starts with a wobbly bridge and finishes with a spectacular zip wire. This is an excellent route to help you get used to heights. After completing The Fa-

This is 7 metres high and has the most obstacles of all the routes, including barrels to crawl through and ropes to swing on – all at 7 metres above the ground! The most challenging of Klimbos Ermelo’s routes is The KICK. This 250-metre-long route includes 17 of the toughest and most challenging obstacles of all: for real daredevils only!

The Tongerense Heide and the Wisselse Veen are very valuable in terms of landscape and scientific interest. The Wisselse Veen originated from seepage from the East Veluwe lateral moraine. The Zandenbos is part of the inspiring Artists’ Village in Nunspeet, which owes its name to the inspiration artists derived from the natural beauty of Nunspeet. This Ronde Huis (round house) route is a good example of how nature can provide inspiration for a wonderful painting. The birch trees, Scots pine, beech trees and more exotic plants such as rhododendrons, larch and boxwood that once surrounded the house can still be seen. Together with the idyllic ponds, they make a magnificent setting and you can well imagine that many people can’t resist setting up their easels and starting to paint.

But whether the buildings have been preserved or not, the history remains! People who played a role in the Hanseatic League centuries ago, walked where you now walk today. Dogs are not allowed here due to the mouflons that graze nearby (usually out of sight). It’s hard to imagine nowadays, but about 150 years ago large parts of the Veluwe must have looked like this. In those days, the inhabitants paid little attention to the beauty of this desolate landscape. The shifting sand formed a daily threat to the farmers of Wekerom. TASTE THE VELUWE
A crackling open fire, wonderful food and a glass of good wine... the Veluwe region offers endless culinary delights, from lively bistros and romantic restaurants to hip-and-trendy bars that stay open long into the night. For culinary excellence, visit one of the Veluwe’s Michelin-starred restaurants in Harderwijk or Vaassen. And if you prefer Veluwe beer with a locally produced bitterbal snack to go with it, that’s no problem either! More and more establishments in the Veluwe are working with certified regional produce, and you can taste the difference! After all, over the centuries the ancient Veluwe soil has become a treasure trove of minerals, providing fertile ground in which the tastiest ingredients can grow. That’s the Veluwe, pure and simple!
COLOURFUL LOCAL TASTE ETEN OP ROLLETJES AND EVENTS IN THE VELUWE! LEPELTJE LEPELTJE The annual event calendar for the Veluwe features many fabulous taste events. Whether you are a visitor to the region or a proud local resident, the events enable you to discover the very best that this wonderful region has to offer in terms of food and drink, from ‘delicious’ walking trails and cycle routes to very exclusive taste events with national allure. So come and savour the wonderful regional products and soak up the colourful atmosphere during events such as ‘Eten op Rolletjes’, ‘Lepeltje Lepeltje’ and the ‘Wilddagen’ game days in Vierhouten!
The food events called Eten op Rolletjes in Ede and Lepeltje Lepeltje in Apeldoorn are held every year. During these culinary festivals, the cities’ parks are transformed into captivating open-air theatres. Both events are characterised by the numerous ‘food trucks’ that come from far and wide.
THE TASTE OF VAN GOGH! A number of restaurants in the Veluwe serve a specially designed Taste of Van Gogh menu, which is inspired by Vincent van Gogh’s paintings. Each dish includes three ingredients featured in his works of art and is made primarily using products from the local Veluwe region.
WILDDAGEN IN VIERHOUTEN The ‘Wilddagen’ game days in Vierhouten mark the start of the game season, with a focus on sampling different game-based dishes.

DE VELUWE CULTURE
TOP 5
TO SEE
The Veluwe has a long history which has given it a very varied and interesting culture. Its illustrious past is still visible in many places in the form of high city walls and impressive fortifications, some of which are still completely intact. Vast estates with grand country houses nostalgically combine scenic beauty with history. Explore delightfully historic Veluwe villages, the centuries-old Hanseatic Towns of Hattem, Elburg and Hardewijk or one of the numerous country estates and castles. And there are also superb museums, there’s one for practically any topic. Experience the present and the past in the Veluwe!
PALEIS HET LOO Members of the Dutch Royal Family lived and worked at Paleis Het Loo for over 300 years. What began as a hunting lodge for a ‘stadholder’ grew to become a palace for a king. It was renovated and modernised, art was collected and a garden designed. The Dutch Royal Family received their guests there, for business and pleasure. They paraded around the gardens and enjoyed their exotic plants and flowers. The palace itself was the scene of royal banquets served on impressive china. This rich, royal past can be seen at Paleis Het Loo.
DE HOGE VELUWE NATIONAL PARK De Hoge Veluwe National Park is unique in the world due to its combination of natural beauty and art. It’s the ideal place not only to experience peace and quiet, see exceptional landscapes and wild animals, but also to take part in organised activities such as excursions, guided tours, workshops and events. The awe-inspiring natural beauty of the 5,500-hectare park can also be explored on your own. The different landscapes are continually changing: as you travel through the park, you’ll go through varied woods, across heathland, grassland and exotic shifting sands. 38

TO DO | MUST SEE KRÖLLER-MÜLLER MUSEUM The beauty of the world is assembled in the Kröller-Müller Museum. The unique combination of art, natural beauty and architecture guarantees an extraordinary experience: an experience that stimulates all your senses. The museum is a paradise for experienced art lovers and open-minded newcomers. With almost 400,000 visitors a year, the Kröller-Müller Museum is one of the most visited museums in the Netherlands. And the collection attracts packed houses internationally too. Millions of people go to see its masterpieces on loan around the world.
CASTLES IN THE VELUWE The Veluwe has a rich selection of castles and country houses. They reveal up to seven centuries of Gelderland history and how people lived then. Some of the castles are open to the public, enabling you to sample the life, the architecture and the art of bygone days. Others can only be viewed from the outside, such as Kasteel De Vanenburg, Kasteel Middachten and Landgoed Oldenaller. But almost all of them are situated in splendid, vast country estates surrounded by magnificent scenic beauty where you can feel nostalgic for times gone by.
HANSEATIC TOWNS, MANY CENTURIES OF HISTORY! Paying a visit to the Hanseatic Towns is the in thing to do at the moment. Shop in old alleyways, absorb a bit of culture between the monumental buildings and stop for a bite to eat on one of the many charming squares. Most of the Hanseatic Towns can be visited in one day, but there is also plenty to do if you stay a bit longer.
