TO DO | CYCLING
EXPLORE THE VELUWE BY BIKE One of the best things about cycling in the Veluwe region is the sheer diversity. After cycling through woodlands and over moraines, you can suddenly encounter wide, open views across heathland or marshes, enabling you to enjoy nature in all its glory. It’s not surprising that the Veluwe region has been chosen as the area with the Netherlands’ most beautiful natural scenery.
FIT FOR A KING
T
o help you to discover the Veluwe’s diversity and the region’s hidden treasures for yourself we’ve designed a number of stunning cycle routes for you, each with a different theme. For example, you can explore the historic Hanseatic Towns, take in grand stately homes and manor houses, or quite literally get a taste of the Veluwe on a culinary cycle route. The Veluwe offers all this and more! These are our favourite recreational routes in the Veluwe region, but you can find more routes at visitveluwe.com/cyclists-paradise Please note! In view of construction work on the network of cycle paths and intersections in the Veluwe region in early 2017, the intersections indicated here will be correct as of May 2017 onwards (but may be subject to change). We wish you many happy hours of cycling! Don’t forget to share details and photos of your adventures along the way on Facebook and Instagram.
You can start the route at several different spots, including at Paleis Het Loo or the CODA Museum. You can follow the route based on the numbered intersections or the ANWB signposts.

ORANGE ROUTE
route 32 km
Apeldoorn
This Royal route is a moderately difficult signposted route on paved paths with some gradients. The cycle route has recently been restored to its former glory by volunteers from the Royal Dutch Touring Club (ANWB). The new signposts have – of course – a regal look. The route takes you through the heart of the Veluwe, including through the centre of Apeldoorn, past the Oranje Park and through Hoog Buurlo and Hoog Soeren. 4

LIBERATION ROUTE route 32 or 55 km Arnhem, Renkum, Wageningen
For part of this route you follow the River Rhine, crossing it via the John Frost bridge in Arnhem. This bridge is also known as the ‘Bridge Too Far’ from the film about the famous battle between the Germans and the British, during which the British forces failed in their attempt to capture the bridge in September 1944.
The route also takes you past some of the airborne landing sites, where thousands of paratroopers were dropped from the skies in September 1944, often under enemy fire. You can hear more about the history at one of the Liberation Route Europe listening points (L20). You can extend this cycle route by an extra 23 km to also take in Wageningen, which is where the terms of surrender for the German forces in the Netherlands were negotiated at Hotel de Wereld.
DISCOVER NATURE’S SPLENDOUR

At the waterfall in Loenen you get a sense of the streams that provided the energy for the corn mills and paper mills in bygone times. You cycle through the Veluwezoom National Park to Leuvenheim, taking in Huize de Wilbaan, a country manor with a very striking facade including decorative wall clamps and window shutters. Then on to Brummen, where Kasteel Engelenburg now functions as a hotel, restaurant and golf course. It has been renovated in the neoclassical style, with retention of the 17th-century layout. TO DO | WATERSPORTS
THE VELUWE: WATER IN ABUNDANCE
The Veluwe region is not just about woodland and heathland; you can find sun, sea and sand here too! In addition to many natural springs and streams, there are more than 100 small lakes in the area, many of which have evolved into lively recreational centres. The Veluwerandmeren, a series of interconnected lakes in the north-western corner of the Veluwe, are among the best-known spots for watersports and the shallow waters make them ideal for beginners too.
WATERSPORTS Take a refreshing dive or test your balance on a wakeboard, kneeboard or water skis. The lakes bordering the Veluwe between the old and the new land have become an Eldorado for recreation and watersporters. And the Veluwe has even more to offer watersports enthusiasts. Sail on an original Elburger botter and get sense of the former Zuider Zee fishing industry. Go out to sea with your own sailing boat, rent a little sloop or board an excursion boat in the old fishing harbour in Harderwijk. That’s the abundant water of the Veluwe.
VELUWERANDMEREN LAKES
- WATERSPORTS
The Veluwerandmeren lakes are popular with watersports enthusiasts. There are lots of facilities for activities including kitesurfing, wakeboarding and canoeing. Thanks to its central location, the shallow water of the Wolderwijd lake and its favourable position for most wind conditions, Strand Horst beach is a big favourite. The Veluwemeer Lake is another unique spot for watersports. It is one of the safest places to learn all sorts of watersports such as stand up paddling (SUP) and sailing a catamaran. It is impossible to describe the sensation of toying with the elements such as water and wind and of being propelled purely by the power of nature in combination with your body – you’ll just have to experience it for yourself! Even when it’s not windy you can still have a great time on the water on a SUP board. Watersports centre Windy Waters can be found at Droompark Bad Hoophuizen on the Veluwemeer Lake. There they will ensure you have the appropriate equipment to venture out onto the water safely.
ZEUMEREN - WATERSPORTS The water sprays your face, the wind takes your breath away – water-skiing gives you an unprecedented feeling of freedom as you skim over the water! At the recreational area of Zeumeren as you’ll master this watersport quite safely in an afternoon. Looking for more thrills? Pit yourself against the obstacles or try your skills on a wakeboard. If you just want to explore the water more gently, take a canoe or a SUP. If you prefer, you can watch the wakeboarders do their stuff out on the water while you enjoy a relaxing drink or snack at the Beachclub.

T
he clog paths follow historical, off-road routes as much as possible. They are characterised by peace and tranquillity, authenticity and a combination of culture and nature. Along the route, residents and visitors learn about local history. A klompenpad walk is varied and can sometimes even be a little ‘adventurous’, requiring you to climb over stiles, cross wobbly bridges or walk through a field of cows – but this is also what makes klompenpaden so popular. They guarantee hours of enjoyable walking in the Veluwe region. Discover the Klompenpaden in the Veluwe region at klompenpaden.nl/welcome. You can also combine two or more klompenpaden to create a multi-day walk. Please note: No dogs allowed in order to avoid worrying the wild animals. Furthermore, the narrow unpaved paths are unsuitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs. Tip: Download the free Klompenpaden app for route information while you’re out and about, interactive maps and interesting video and audio clips! TO DO | MUST SEE VELUWE CULTURE
TOP 5
TO SEE
The Veluwe has a long history which has given it a very varied and interesting culture. Its illustrious past is still visible in many places in the form of high city walls and impressive fortifications, some of which are still completely intact. Vast estates with grand country houses nostalgically combine scenic beauty with history. Explore delightfully historic Veluwe villages, the centuries-old Hanseatic Towns of Hattem, Elburg and Hardewijk or one of the numerous country estates and castles. And there are also superb museums, there’s one for practically any topic. Experience the present and the past in the Veluwe!
PALEIS HET LOO Members of the Dutch Royal Family lived and worked at Paleis Het Loo for over 300 years. What began as a hunting lodge for a ‘stadholder’ grew to become a palace for a king. It was renovated and modernised, art was collected and a garden designed. The Dutch Royal Family received their guests there, for business and pleasure. They paraded around the gardens and enjoyed their exotic plants and flowers. The palace itself was the scene of royal banquets served on impressive china. This rich, royal past can be seen at Paleis Het Loo.
DE HOGE VELUWE NATIONAL PARK De Hoge Veluwe National Park is unique in the world due to its combination of natural beauty and art. It’s the ideal place not only to experience peace and quiet, see exceptional landscapes and wild animals, but also to take part in organised activities such as excursions, guided tours, workshops and events. The awe-inspiring natural beauty of the 5,500-hectare park can also be explored on your own. The different landscapes are continually changing: as you travel through the park, you’ll go through varied woods, across heathland, grassland and exotic shifting sands. 42

KRÖLLER-MÜLLER MUSEUM The beauty of the world is assembled in the Kröller-Müller Museum. The unique combination of art, natural beauty and architecture guarantees an extraordinary experience: an experience that stimulates all your senses. The museum is a paradise for experienced art lovers and open-minded newcomers. With almost 400,000 visitors a year, the Kröller-Müller Museum is one of the most visited museums in the Netherlands. And the collection attracts packed houses internationally too. Millions of people go to see its masterpieces on loan around the world.
CASTLES IN THE VELUWE The Veluwe has a rich selection of castles and country houses. They reveal up to seven centuries of Gelderland history and how people lived then. Some of the castles are open to the public, enabling you to sample the life, the architecture and the art of bygone days. Others can only be viewed from the outside, such as Kasteel De Vanenburg, Kasteel Middachten and Landgoed Oldenaller. But almost all of them are situated in splendid, vast country estates surrounded by magnificent scenic beauty where you can feel nostalgic for times gone by.
HANSEATIC TOWNS, MANY CENTURIES OF HISTORY! Paying a visit to the Hanseatic Towns is the in thing to do at the moment. Shop in old alleyways, absorb a bit of culture between the monumental buildings and stop for a bite to eat on one of the many charming squares. Most of the Hanseatic Towns can be visited in one day, but there is also plenty to do if you stay a bit longer.
