Members of the Dutch Royal Family lived and worked at Paleis Het Loo for over 300 years. What began as a hunting lodge for a ‘stadtholder’ grew to become a palace for a king. It was renovated and modernised, art was collected and gardens designed. The Dutch Royal Family received their guests there, for business and pleasure. They paraded around the gardens and enjoyed their exotic plants and flowers. The palace itself was the scene of royal banquets served on impressive china. This rich and royal past can be seen at Paleis Het Loo.

he gardens at Paleis Het Loo changed shape quite a bit over the years. Louis Napoleon lived at Het Loo for a short time during the French Revolution, where his fear of water led him to shut off all the fountains and water features. Later, the gardens were restored in line with

the design by William and Mary, who founded Paleis Het Loo and were its first inhabitants. The garden is symmetrical with many terraces, impressive fountains and historic plants. The hornbeam-covered walkway provides a picturesque setting for a cooling summer walk. A mixture of

historic and modern flowers provide year-round seasonal atmosphere in the palace gardens.

The gardens at Paleis Het Loo are among the finest in Europe!

EXPERIENCE THE PRESENT AND THE PAST The Veluwe has a long history which has given it a very varied and interesting culture. Vestiges from bygone days surface all over the Veluwe. Its illustrious past is still visible in many places in the form of high city walls and impressive fortifications, some of which are still completely intact. Vast estates with grand country houses nostalgically combine scenic beauty with history. Explore delightfully historic Veluwe villages, the centuries-old towns – including the Hanseatic Towns of Elburg, Hattem and Hardewijk – castles and country estates or visit one of the region’s many museums. There’s a museum for practically any topic. These include Anton Pieck, castles, modern art, old crafts and toys, Van Gogh and war history. Experience the present and the past! In addition to the cultural highlights of the Veluwe, which will be described in detail further on, the following museums are most certainly worth a visit too!

NOORD-VELUWS MUSEUM NUNSPEET

The Noord-Veluws Museum is first and foremost an art gallery displaying works by artists from the north of the Veluwe. The museum does not limit itself to providing information about the paintings, but also links them to stories of the artists and the people who lived and worked in this region in those days. Artists’ colonies sprang up all over 8

Europe during the 19th century, attracting artists from the big cities. The invention of tubes of paint meant that they could paint their landscapes in the ‘open air’ instead of in a studio. One of these artists’ groups was formed in Nunspeet and Elspeet at the end of the 19th century. These painters from the Veluwe were inspired by the new trend in art: impressionism. Their brushstrokes became looser and increasingly presented an impression of the landscape focusing on the light and colour of the moment. Paintings by the Veluwe artists sold like hot cakes in Dutch cities and even in the UK and the USA. More than 100 wellknown artists lived and worked in this region between 1880 and 1950. Famous artists who worked in the north of the Veluwe included Arthur Briët, Willy Martens, Edzard Koning, Jan van Vuuren, Ben Viegers, Jos

Lussenburg, Jaap Hiddink and Chris ten Bruggen Kate. Noord-Veluws Museum Winckelweg 17A, 8071 DN Nunspeet 0031 250560

The museum houses a permanent exhibition of archaeological finds from Ermelo and the surrounding area. This is also where you can see the silhouette of a body, given the name ‘Jantje’ that was found in a burial mound on Speulderveld in the 1950s. A silhouette of a body is a discolouration of the ground in which a body has lain. A temporary exhibition on a topic relating to nature, the environment or heritage is held twice a year. Exhibitions in previous years have given visitors the opportunity to march with the army, admire wildlife in the Veluwe region and even to learn how to bake biscuits the way they do in confectionery Het Sluisje!

Veluwe history is depicted by means of many objects in the extensive archaeology section. At least three exhibitions are organised around the theme of art or history every year and displayed in the two exhibition rooms. You can enjoy a cup of tea or coffee in the museum café during your visit and there is a well-stocked museum shop too. Workshops for children are organised regularly and they can also take part in treasure hunts around the museum. Museum Nairac Brouwerstraat 1, 3771 HA Barneveld 0031 342 415 666 info@nairac.nl

Zypendaal House is a magnificent 18th-century country estate in Arnhem: a beautiful house with outbuildings and a garden in a green river valley, surrounded by flowing water. Some of the décor inside the house is original, such as the unusual marble floor in the hall, which features a chain motif. When you go to the main floor it’s as if you are paying a visit to the Brantsen family, many generations of whom lived at Zypendaal. The park surrounding Zypendaal House is ideal for strolling around, taking the dog for a walk or picnicking. Rhododendrons provide a decorative note around the lawns,

DE HOGE VELUWE NATIONAL PARK

THE NETHERLANDS’

GREEN TREASURE CHAMBER

De Hoge Veluwe National Park is unique in the world due to its combination of natural beauty and art. It’s the ideal place not only to experience peace and quiet, see exceptional landscapes and wild animals, but also to take part in organised activities such as excursions, guided tours, workshops and events. The aweinspiring natural beauty of the 5,500-hectare park can also be explored on your own. The different landscapes are continually changing: as you travel through the park, you’ll go through varied woods, across heathland, grassland and exotic shifting sands.

T

he park is the legacy of one of the most prominent couples in Dutch history: Anton and Helene Kröller-Müller. From 1909 onwards they started gradually buying plots of land: the current De Hoge Veluwe National Park. Anton was an enthusiastic hunter and Helene a passionate art collector. 16

Their dream was to bring nature and art together. Now, over 100 years later, we are still able to enjoy their legacy: a varied landscape and an enormous cultural collection that includes the Kröller-Müller Museum and the country house, Jachthuis Sint Hubertus.

Stalls filled with typical specialities of the Veluwe region and decorative products. • Interesting lectures (most of them in Dutch): on the first Sunday of the month. • Safaris and walks: look for special species of animals and plants in magnificent landscapes under the guidance of the forester or nature guide. • Junior Nature Expedition: Children can take part in workshops, treasure hunts and experiments throughout the weekend and learn about nature and the animals in the park. • Popular events: in the park include The Day of the Horse in June and the National ‘Burlen’ Championships at the end of August, when enthusiasts compete to imitate the noise stags make in the mating season.

MUSEONDER If you want to find out more about life under the ground, go to Museonder, the first underground museum in the world. Museonder gives you an astonishing view of everything that lives and used to live below the surface of the earth.

CHILDREN There are all sorts of things for children to see and do in the park to make it an exciting and fun day out. They can look for wild animal tracks in the woods, for instance. Animals such as deer, roe deer, wild boar and mouf-

GESAMTKUNSTWERK BY BERLAGE De Hoge Veluwe National Park symbolises fantastic flora and fauna, awe-inspiring landscapes, art and architecture. A magnificent example of art and architecture can be found in Jachthuis Sint Hubertus, the former country residence of the founders of the park, Anton and Helene Kröller-Müller. The Jachthuis is one of the most important buildings in the Netherlands. Guided tours of the most important rooms in the Jachthuis are given daily.

Another way of observing wild animals is to watch them from one of the animal hides. There are special activities for children every weekend, ranging from puppet theatre to magicians and from exciting stories to comedy the-

And in the summer there are children’s safaris (offered in Dutch). The children go into the woods with the forester and sleep out in the open under a starry sky. Or perhaps you’d prefer to go on your own with your family.

You can pick up all sorts of leaflets about treasure hunts and discovery routes from the Visitors Centre, such as the ‘Spike and Suzy Adventure’ or the ‘Knapsack Route’ that includes a little rucksack to carry the things you collect for the assignments in the booklet.

J

achthuis Sint Hubertus was designed by the renowned Dutch architect Hendrikus Petrus Berlage (1856-1934). The Jachthuis is a rather unusual building in Berlage’s oeuvre. His careful attention to the art of design in the house is a departure from the rational and methodical style for which he is known. This is just one of the many reasons why the Jachthuis enjoys such critical acclaim in the Netherlands and abroad. While Berlage was usually commissioned to design buildings alone, in the case of the Jachthuis he also designed the interior, right down to the cutlery. He designed the grounds too: a park with a large pond and a bridge extending over a portion of the pond. This means that the Jachthuis is a so-called Gesamtkunstwerk, or universal artwork.

Back-to-nature campsite

The building of Jachthuis Sint Hubertus did not always go smoothly. Helene Kröller-Müller knew exactly what she wanted and that led to conflicts more than once, delaying its completion as a result. The building was eventually completed in 1920. At the time the couple used it mainly as a country house, and it did not become their permanent residence until their final years. rom the outside, the museum might seem austere, but inside it is light and friendly, even homely. Nowhere else can you get as close to the works of Vincent van Gogh. With its 88 paintings and 182 drawings, the museum owns the second-largest Van Gogh collection in the world. Furthermore, the collection includes major works by almost all the leading masters such as Picasso, Seurat, Monet, Renoir, Toorop, Mondrian and many others. At the same time, you can look

out of what could be an enormous sitting-room window into the garden where you’ll see sculptures by Auguste Rodin, Barbara Hepworth, Jan Fabre, Marta Pan, Aristide Maillol and Joep van Lieshout. You can get close to the artworks in the Sculpture Garden too: a 25-hectare outdoor gallery where modern sculpture has found a natural setting and where you can even interact with some of the art, such as Jean DuBuffet’s marvellous Jardin d’émail.

HELENE’S LIFE’S WORK The museum represents Helene Kröller-Müller’s life’s work. Together with her husband Anton Kröller, she bought almost 11,500 works of art between 1907 and 1922, making her collection one of the largest private collections of the 20th century. Helene dreamt of having her own

Not only does it have a wonderful collection of Dutch and world art and a spectacular and tranquil sculpture garden, it is nestled in the middle of the Veluwe National Park. ‘museum house’, a place where she could share her love of modern art with everyone. When the Kröller-Müller Museum opened its doors in 1938, Helene saw her dream become reality. The collection was to be preserved for the future and for the general public.

EXTRAORDINARY EXPERIENCE A visit to the museum is an extraordinary experience: a voyage of discovery that begins as soon as you enter De Hoge Veluwe National Park. Visitors can wander around freely on foot or ride around on a free White Bike, enjoying the natural beauty as they make their way to the Netherlands’ most beautiful treasure chamber. LA SAISON DE FÊTES A FLORAL JOURNEY ROUND THE WORLD IN THE SCULPTURE GARDEN

La Saison des Fêtes will be installed in the spring of 2016: an enormous, labyrinthine work by Pierre Huyghe. Huyghe, a celebrated artist on the international avant-garde front, takes visitors on a ‘floral’ journey full of symbolism and tradition around the world. He associates annually recurring, centuries-old festivities from all over the world with one or more plants to form La Saison des Fêtes. As the various plants flower, they bring the festivities, the seasons and the months of the year to life time and time again. Besides this new work by Huyghe, there is much more to discover in the huge sculpture garden: sculptures

From 04.2016. The Kröller-Müller Museum is honouring England’s Dame Barbara Hepworth (1903-1975) by exhibiting a large selection of her work, which can be seen until 17 April 2016. This is not simply a collection of her works but an intimate introduction to the artist’s colourful life and work. Barbara Hepworth is one of the 20th century’s most successful sculptors. Her sculptures form part of the major collections of sculpture in the world. The exhibition sheds light on her career in stages, from her early years as an artist in the 1920s to the internationally renowned sculptor she was by the end of her life. EARLY VAN GOGH: VINCENT’S EARLY YEARS AS A DRAUGHTSMAN 24.09.2016 – 09.04.2017 This exhibition focuses on Vincent van Gogh’s early career as an artist, when he worked in The Hague and Nuenen. Usually most of the attention is paid to his paintings, but in Early Van Gogh the museum will be emphasising the drawings from his Dutch period. The drawings show exactly how Vincent struggled to master the technique and add volume and movement to his figures. He experimented with various materials and techniques. You get a sense of Vincent’s own opinion of the process and the sometimes magnificent result from his letters. A quotation from one of his letters to his brother Theo in 1881 makes it clear: “I should be able to create

a sower sowing seeds in a year or a few years…”. To assemble the exhibition, the museum is able to draw from its sizeable Van Gogh collection, which includes over 180 works on paper. Besides this presentation, his world-famous later paintings, such as Terrace of a café at night and Bridge at Arles, can also be seen.

HANSEATIC TOWNS MANY CENTURIES OF HISTORY! Paying a visit to the Hanseatic Towns is the in thing to do at the moment. Shop in old alleyways, absorb a bit of culture between the monumental buildings and stop for a bite to eat on one of the many charming squares. Most of the Hanseatic Towns can be visited in one day, but there is also plenty to do if you stay a bit longer. TIP: the Hanseatic bike and barge tour. Go to boatbiketours.com History is all around you in the Hanseatic Towns and the Hanseatic mentality is still there too. The Hanseatic League was an alliance between towns who sought assistance from each other at a time when there were few laws, and piracy, robbery and murder turned trade expeditions into dangerous ventures. The Hanseatic League was a powerful alliance in the Middle Ages. Some 200 towns from Russia to France were affiliated. So come and experience the unique atmosphere in the centuries-old towns. Prefer to be more active? Get on your bike or put on your walking boots and explore the Hanseatic valley or discover the town centres by taking a Hanseatic town walk.

28

HATTEM, HANSEATIC TOWN IN THE VELUWE Hattem is one of the Hanseatic Towns in the Veluwe, which has its own distinctive charm and identity. Just as in the other Hanseatic Towns, the glorious history of the mediaeval Hanseatic League has left traces and transformed the town into a delightful tourist attraction.

H

attem is surrounded by magnificent areas of natural beauty, vast water meadows along the River IJssel, the richly forested North Veluwe and the polder landscape to the north. You can also book a boat trip or go out on the water yourself on the IJssel or the Apeldoorn Canal. Hattem offers plenty of opportunities, whether for active or more leisurely recreation. There are a number of unique historical places of interest in the middle of the woods on the country estate of Molecaten: mysterious Spanish graves, the former granary, Spijker Watervliedt and the old watermill. Definitely worth a visit! You’ll find many authentic delicatessens and welcoming pavement cafés in the centre of town. And despite its size, Hattem doesn’t just have one museum, but three! The Voerman Museum Hattem, the Anton Pieck Museum with its delightful selection of this master’s work and finally, the bakery museum, Nederlands Bakkerij Museum, where the history of bread and pastry is told in a surprising way. THE FORTIFIED TOWN OF ELBURG

ELBURG Walking round Elburg, you feel you could be back in the Middle Ages. The old ramparts with their wonderful trees, the narrow alleyways, the cobbled pavements and delightful views make this fortified town a place full of character where it’s a pleasure to wander around. The ancient Hanseatic Town has more than 250 listed buildings within its walls alone. One of the most iconic buildings in Elburg is the Agnietenklooster, or Convent of Saint Agnes. The Agnietenklooster has been given a new use and now houses Museum Elburg.

T

he layout of the fishing town is based on the principle of the golden section, a rarity in urban development, which gives the town its characteristic grid street plan. Historically, trading took place mainly by water. Elburg’s location was therefore also the consequence of a strategic decision. The town was a member of the Hanseatic League, a trading alliance of Northern European Hanseatic towns, as far back as 1367. Up to 1932, the fishing town was on the Zuider Zee. After the IJsselmeer Dam was built and the Zuider Zee was drained to form the IJsselmeer lake, the distance between Elburg and open water increased considerably. Fishing made room for other occupations. The old wooden boats that can still be seen in the harbour area, the botters, keep the memory of Elburg’s fishing past alive. Water sports enthusiasts can reach the harbour, which now lies just outside the old fortified town, via the Veluwemeer and the Drontemeer lakes. 30

TO SEE | HANSEATIC TOWNS HISTORIC HARDERWIJK

HARDERWIJK This marvellous old town has over 100 historic monuments, picturesque alleyways and charming squares. There are even some parts of the old town wall still visible, complete with imposing towers. The Veluwerandmeer (lake) is only 2 minutes from the historic town centre. You can of course go to the lively urban beach, but you can also take a trip on the lake on a launch, a sloop, a yacht or even a botter.

H

arderwijk was designated a Hanseatic Town back in 1252. The town, at that time on the banks of the Zuider Zee, joined the German Hanseatic League. The coming and going of merchants and merchandise meant the town was full of hustle and bustle. Harderwijk became a town of consequence. The vestiges of that era can still be seen. Some buildings that stood then are still there. But whether buildings have been preserved or not, the history remains! Centuries ago, people who played a role in the Hanseatic League walked these streets. Harderwijk was granted city rights in 1231 and went on to develop into a leading mercantile town. It profited from its position on a number of important trade routes to Deventer, Elburg, Hattem, Kampen and towns along the Zuider Zee, the North Sea and the Baltic. Weekly markets and annual fairs were held there. In those days Smeepoortenbrink was used as the market square where goods were bought and sold that were mainly imported

or exported over land, such as bilberries, timber, cloth, and beer from Amersfoort. The large seaworthy cogs couldn’t moor in Harderwijk, but dropped anchor further along the coast. The small pusher boats were then used to bring the merchandise to two long piers on the coast at Harderwijk. One pier was near to the Hooghe Bruggepoort and one was near the Vischpoort. Visit Harderwijk and discover the beauty of the town by visiting the Vischpoort, the main church, or Grote Kerk, the Vischmarkt and the harbour. Look out across the Wolderwijd to where the waters of the Zuider Zee used to swirl treacherously. Visit the Stadsmuseum which houses a unique object directly associated with the Hanseatic League: a 700-year-old bronze sculpture in the shape of a pony. The Hanseatic Town of Harderwijk was and still is a bustling and lively town! Trading has moved to vibrant shops selling a broad range of clothing, accessories, gifts, mouth-watering treats and much more. And also certainly to the numerous cafÊs and restaurants that serve delicious drinks and tasty lunches. Harderwijk is a culinary town, a romantic town, a town where there is lots to experience. A distinctive outcome of the Hanseatic trade of long ago... More information: visitveluwe.com/hanseatictowns

LIBERATION ROUTE EUROPE Visit liberationroute.com

Liberation Route Europe is a steadily growing, international commemoration route that connects important milestones in modern European history. The route takes the path trodden by mainly Western allies during the liberation of Europe. The route starts in the south of England and runs in the direction of Berlin via Normandy, the Ardennes, the Netherlands and the Huertgen Forest. The route stretches further towards the Polish city of Gdansk, where almost two ´ generations later a democratic revolution to abolish the separation of Europe gained momentum.

MEET THE HEROES OF THE PAST Liberation Route Europe gives you the chance to experience what was going on in 1944-1945. Audio spots have been placed on large boulders at almost 170 sites in the Netherlands, including the Veluwe. At each audio spot you can listen to an account of the impressive experiences of one or more people during the last years of the war. You can also download the stories about these spots for free from the liberationroute.com website and by way of the free app. Liberation Route Europe is not a ready-made route. Depending on your own interests you can put together a walk, cycle route, bus journey or car journey to take you to the audio spots of your choice. 34

BATTLE ON THE GINKELSE HEIDE The region around Arnhem and Nijmegen played a major role at the end of the Second World War. One of the most extensive airborne landings ever took place around Arnhem during Operation Market Garden. An unremitting stream of aircraft flew over the area in September 1944, dropping thousands of parachutists who were coming to liberate the Netherlands. Battles with German troops, who put up intractable resistance, took place all over the Ginkelse Heide near Ede. The

heathland was too big to defend effectively and the allies lost ground. Shortly before the parachutists landed on 18 September, a fierce attack had driven the Germans off the heathland. About 2,000 men jumped, completely astounded, into an inferno of bullets, smoke and fire. Despite the anti-aircraft defence and problems during the descent, 90% of the paras landed within the drop zone. The march towards Arnhem began.

PLENTY OF MICHELIN STARS IN THE VELUWE! What would you like: the best, the best or the best? If you want a good meal there’s plenty to choose from in the Veluwe region, because the Veluwe is home to a unique number of excellent restaurants. Just count the stars: from De Leest in Vaassen to De Kromme Dissel in Heelsum and from Het Roode Koper in Leuvenum to ‘t Nonnetje and Basiliek in Harderwijk. And the list of the 500 best restaurants in the Netherlands, published by the restaurant guide Lekker, features even more fantastic places to eat in and around the Veluwe. With its three Michelin stars De Librije, in the converted former town jail in Zwolle, ranks number one in Lekker and is described as ‘almost un-European top class.’ But the enchanting culinary palace De Leest in Vaassen in the Veluwe, where Chef Jacob-Jan Boerma is in charge, also has three stars: ‘pure and chic enjoyment’. last but not least Het Roode Koper, situated in an imposing villa in Leuvenum, secured its first Michelin star this year.

TO SEE | MUST TASTE

TASTE THE VELUWE

A crackling open fire, wonderful food and a glass of good wine... the Veluwe region offers endless culinary delights, from lively bistros and romantic restaurants to hip-and-trendy bars that stay open long into the night. For culinary excellence, visit one of the Veluwe’s Michelin-starred restaurants in Harderwijk or Vaassen. And if you prefer Veluwe beer with a locally produced bitterbal snack to go with it, that’s no problem either! More and more establishments in the Veluwe are working with certified regional produce, and you can taste the difference! After all, over the centuries the ancient Veluwe soil has become a treasure trove of minerals, providing fertile ground in which the tastiest ingredients can grow. That’s the Veluwe, pure and simple!

COLOURFUL LOCAL TASTE ETEN OP ROLLETJES AND EVENTS IN THE VELUWE! LEPELTJE LEPELTJE The annual event calendar for the Veluwe features many fabulous taste events. Whether you are a visitor to the region or a proud local resident, the events enable you to discover the very best that this wonderful region has to offer in terms of food and drink, from ‘delicious’ walking trails and cycle routes to very exclusive taste events with national allure. So come and savour the wonderful regional products and soak up the colourful atmosphere during events such as ‘Eten op Rolletjes’, ‘Lepeltje Lepeltje’ and the ‘Wilddagen’ game days in Vierhouten!

The food events called Eten op Rolletjes in Ede and Lepeltje Lepeltje in Apeldoorn are held every year. During these culinary festivals, the cities’ parks are transformed into captivating open-air theatres. Both events are characterised by the numerous ‘food trucks’ that come from far and wide.

THE TASTE OF VAN GOGH! A number of restaurants in the Veluwe serve a specially designed Taste of Van Gogh menu, which is inspired by Vincent van Gogh’s paintings. Each dish includes three ingredients featured in his works of art and is made primarily using products from the local Veluwe region.

WILDDAGEN IN VIERHOUTEN The ‘Wilddagen’ game days in Vierhouten mark the start of the game season, with a focus on sampling different game-based dishes.

TO DO

More info: VisitVeluwe.com/active

The Veluwe region is perfect for all kinds of outdoor activities. With woodlands, heathlands, shifting sands, lateral moraines and man-made lakes as well as countless natural springs and lakes, the landscape is extremely diverse! There are numerous recreational areas where visitors can walk or hike, cycle, climb or participate in a variety of watersports, not to mention the miles and miles of bridleways. So come and experience the Veluwe’s wide choice of active pursuits!

ENDLESS NETWORK OF CYCLE PATHS One of the best things about cycling in the Veluwe region is the sheer diversity. As you pedal through woodlands and over heaths, fens and rocky ridges, you will wonder at nature’s scale yet tiny details will also catch your eye. In fact, the Veluwe could possibly be the best region for cyclists in the whole of the Netherlands. It offers terrain to suit all tastes, whether you want to take a leisurely bike ride making use of the network of cycle-route intersections or you’re looking to work up a sweat on your mountain bike or racing bike. From flat routes to hilly ones and woodland trails to paved cycle paths, the Veluwe has it all!

VELUWE, A WATERSPORTS UTOPIA The Veluwe region is not just about woodland and heathland; you can find sun, sea and sand here too! In addition to many natural springs and streams, there are more than 100 small lakes in the area, many of which have evolved into lively recreational centres. The Veluwerandmeren, a series of interconnected lakes in the northwestern corner of the Veluwe, are among the bestknown spots for watersports and the shallow water makes them ideal for beginners too. 38

TO SEE | MUST DO WALK FOR MILES The Veluwe region is stunning. Rolling hills and a varied landscape that stretches as far as the eye can see, with a diversity of woodlands, heathlands and shifting sands. In addition to offering peace and tranquility, the Veluwe has a unique cultural heritage. Choose from numerous walking trails and hikes, each of which illustrates the sheer diversity of the Dutch countryside! The impressive scenery in the Veluwe region provides a unique backdrop to a run or jog through the area and various Veluwe Runs and Veluwe Trails are organised for runners each year: a fantastic experience!

CLIMBING: AN ACTIVE CHALLENGE FOR PEOPLE OF ALL AGES! Do you love a challenge, and do you dare to climb to a height of around 18 metres before whizzing back down to the ground along a mega zip wire? There are various outdoor climbing centres in the Veluwe region where you are challenged to push back your personal boundaries and unleash the adrenalin. Visit one of the Veluwe’s outdoor climbing centres: a unique and energising experience for all the family!

EXPLORE THE VELUWE ON HORSEBACK! The Veluwe region is renowned for its excellent network of walking/hiking trails and cycle routes – but what many people do not realise is that the Veluwe also has an extensive network of bridleways for horse riding and carriage driving. As a result, the Veluwe has plenty to offer owners and lovers of horses. The region is ideal, whether for short rides or multi-day treks. There are numerous places for riders and their horses to rest in reward for their exertion, including stables for people who wish to stay overnight. The Veluwe even offers a wide choice of overnight accommodation where both riders and their horses can stay. MINI-GUIDE CULTURE
