Clothing the Gaps by

Laura Thompson  Laura designs t-shirts to spark conversations but now the company she co-founded, Clothing the Gaps, is doing far more by funding Aboriginal health and community programs. Many of our worlds were turned upside down with the arrival of the pandemic but when Laura Thompson and Sarah Sheridan's business took a huge hit, they turned lemons into lemonade. Alongside social enterprise Clothing the Gaps, they'd been running Spark Health to deliver health promotion programs and resources to Aboriginal communities. As part of that, Laura, a Gunditjmara woman, designed t-shirts, with the sales helping to fund its programs. “Clothing the Gaps really grew during the first lockdown because we couldn’t deliver our grassroots programs and we lost a lot of our contracts,” says Laura. “We didn’t want to lose any staff – we were a team of four at the time – so we refocused our efforts on the brand.”

6

Laura Thompson

Right from the start, allies have asked if they could wear the gear designed by Clothing the Gaps, and so the company created two symbols – Ally Friendly and Mob Only – to help people identify culturally appropriate t-shirts, hoodies and more. The company also includes postcards with

each purchase outlining how people can actively create social change. The business has grown to a team of 25 and opened a store in Brunswick. “It is a space that feels like home, it’s a safe Blak space,” says Laura. “And for non-Indigenous people it offers a new experience. All the staff are Aboriginal and they are cultural educators. In the space, you’re surrounded by artwork and political statements and the whole building’s painted red, black and yellow.” Also on the building is a huge mural that says 'Free the Flag'. It’s one of the campaigns that has now been taken up by the Clothing the Gaps Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation led by Aboriginal people to improve the health and lives of the Indigenous community. + clothingthegaps.com.au

It was the same time as the Black Lives Matter protests. Many people also became aware of the issues facing Aboriginal people, including black deaths in custody, and wanted to show their support.

Paper is artist Magda Ksiezak’s medium, and she’s using it to celebrate the Melbourne summer. It’s happening, and the anticipation is building. The air is warm, the sky is blue, the bars and restaurants are overflowing, and the city’s calendar is filling with fun events. Summer is here and it’s time to celebrate, both a season of doing what we love best and Melbourne’s incredible creatives – the people who give this great city its unique quality. So, we’ve called in the big art guns to create

a paper-based party for the cover of this edition! Having studied photography in Canberra, Magda Ksiezak moved to Melbourne in 2005 and expanded her skills at RMIT. Now she creates incredible, brightly coloured paper craft to create vibrant, playful images.

“There’s an element of magic in it, and that’s when the tangible collides with illustration and design,”

says Magda. “Is it computer generated? Is it real? Well, it’s a bit of both and it involves a lengthy process, which for me makes it interesting.” Others also find its possibilities interesting, and Magda has collaborated with brands like Pizza Hut and Dulux, as well as Melbourne institutions, including Triple R, the Melbourne Museum and AFL Kids. For this summer's front cover, she wanted to capture the sense of anticipation the arrival of the season brings. “It’s something we’re all

experiencing at the moment and it’s really worth celebrating,” she says. “It wasn’t until I sat down with Matt Convery, a senior designer at Visit Victoria, and we spoke about the intention that things fell into place. A party popper with elements exploding from it instantly clicked. Some of the best ideas aren’t overthought.” The elements represent the best of Melbourne in summer: food, music, shopping, tennis, art, theatre and even penguins. Each is created as a paper object, strung up in front of a background to create a three-

dimensional scene that’s then photographed.

“It’s problem solving and trying something that might not work without a control Z,” says Magda. “It’s trial and error and experience. It still fascinates me that, as much I can imagine the outcome in my mind, there’s always a sense of excitement and joy when it comes together, and I can see the final image. That, for me, is magic.”

As for Magda, she’s definitely got days of sunshine on her mind as summer days arrive: “I’m looking forward to enjoying spontaneous adventures with friends, getting some sand under my toes, and getting back into the city and absorbing Melbourne’s energy. I’ve really missed that.” + hellomagda.com + visitvictoria.com

Man About Town

Dame Edna and Terence Murphy

For the past 21 years, Terence Murphy has worked with the guest relations team at Sofitel Melbourne. These are his city tips. Add a slice of French luxury to a Melbourne staycation by booking a room at the Sofitel Melbourne. Situated at the Paris end of Collins Street, it’s the perfect base to rediscover all the city has to offer. For Terence Murphy, the hotel has been his workplace for 36 years. The past two decades have been spent in guest relations, where his role ranges from greeting newcomers as they check in to staying in touch with guests past, present and future.

30

Terence Murphy

We asked Terence for some tips about making the most of their stay.

Apart from a room, what other experiences at the Sofitel should guests book during their stay? For an extra touch of luxury, guests should add Club Sofitel access to their accommodation.

Tell us about the Sofitel’s arts program. We have two exhibitions coming up: Tim Johnson’s Creed (until 16 January), a collection of his new large paintings, and photographer Jon Rendell’s Thirty Seven Degrees (until 30 January), which shows his images of Melbourne and San Francisco.

24 Hours in Melbourne Actor Des Flanagan takes us on a tour of his hot spots.

“It’s a story of artists from all walks of life banding together to put a show on at all costs.”

It was the movie that brought the romance of Paris in 1899 to the screen, and now Moulin Rouge! The Musical is lighting up the stage of Melbourne’s Regent Theatre. And Des Flanagan is ready to take on the role of a lifetime, playing lovestruck writer Christian.

Here, Des tells us about some of his favourite spots around town.

“It’s an honour to be part of this production, especially now, as it has such a resonance to the arts industry coming out of COVID,” he says.

Where do you get your day-starter coffee? I often find myself at Coin Laundry Cafe in Armadale. Not only is the coffee brilliant and the people beautiful, but the cafe is also on the north-eastern corner of a block, so the sun streams in.

Supernormal Josie Withers

Bowery to Williamsburg is a New York-style bagel cafe in Oliver Lane. I can’t go past the Reuben, something I became addicted to after visiting New York in 2019.

Where would you suggest friends go for a drink before the show?

Do you have a favourite place to take friends visiting Melbourne?

Eau-De-Vie where the Élysée Montmartre cocktail is named after a burlesque theatre similar to the Moulin Rouge in Paris.

Whenever friends visit, we spend the day in the Royal Botanic Gardens and National Gallery of Victoria.

Is there a store where you could browse for hours?

Best spot for a celebratory dinner?

Where do you meet people when you’re finished for the night?

I often go to boutique homewares shop The Panton Store in Prahran when I need to buy people gifts. If people receive a gift from me, they can be sure it’s come from there.

Flinders Lane’s Supernormal is always a win. It’s easy to get to and has delicious Asian-inspired food that can be shared. My personal favourites are prawn and chicken dumplings and the duck bao.

Chanel’s Lasting Legacy It’s the country’s fashion capital, so it’s no surprise Melbourne will host the international debut of an exhibition celebrating Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel. At the beginning of the twentieth century, women’s fashion was very different. Clothing was created using stiff fabrics and layered with underpinnings and corsets. All that was about to change, with the arrival of Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel, who most now recognise as Coco. The way she broke standards to develop her own style vocabulary is demonstrated at NGV International’s new exhibition, Gabrielle Chanel. Fashion Manifesto.

48

“Her legacy and lasting contribution is really that she made fashion relevant for women and particularly for a new kind of female subject,” says NGV curator of fashion and textiles Danielle Whitfield. “She designed clothing for emancipated, independent women that responded to their lifestyles. The principles of her aesthetic were around comfort, ease of movement, youthfulness, simplicity and a kind of elegance.”

The exhibition features more than 230 garments, pieces of jewellery and accessories from the Paris fashion museum, Palais Galliera, as well as private collectors and the NGV Collection. They date from her earliest years in the 1920s through to her comeback in the 1950s, when she created the Chanel suit worn by the likes of Jackie Kennedy, Lauren Bacall and Grace Kelly.

Danielle believes some may be surprised by Chanel’s early innovations: “Even when we think about the perfume and cosmetics, it came so early in her career – in 1921 she developed Chanel No.5.

Not Breakfast, Not Lunch It’s something Melburnians take very seriously, so it should come as no surprise that there’s a whole range of brunch options available right across the city. Of course, you can simply get up late and head to a favourite cafe for coffee and your favourite dishes, whether they involve eggs, avocados or an altogether more exotic option (Higher Ground’s spanner crab benedict is a favourite). Or you could seek out something more fun and

“The waste involved in daily life weighs heavily on me," she says. "There’s certainly a lot of potential in this material. It could be integrated into everyday life to solve a huge issue we have with waste and the use of petrochemical plastics.” When asked about the impact of ongoing isolation and social distancing across Victoria, Jessie acknowledges some positive outcomes the lockdown has provided for her practice. “Being able to check on things at all hours and see how they change and

develop throughout a process enabled me to learn,” she says. “The pandemic also allowed me the opportunity to go back to post-graduate study, which informed my studio practice heavily and led me to continue with things that I may have given up without this kind of methodology in place.” Jessie’s works are available at Craft Victoria’s online store. + shop.craft.org.au

Fashion On Foot Discover the best slow and sustainable fashion in Melbourne when you join a walking tour with Donna Cameron. As a personal stylist working in Fitzroy, it didn’t take Donna Cameron long to become captivated by the creators working around her. “I was surrounded by microbusinesses creating fashion and accessories – handmade shoes, dresses, jewellery, a whole range of different things,” she says. “As someone who can’t sew, I found it fascinating to watch the process, from sketches on someone’s wall to big rolls of fabric. Two weeks later, there’d be this incredible garment.” Inspired, Donna wanted to reveal this world to other fashionistas, and small-group tour business Fashion by Foot was born. That was four years ago, and now she and business partner Briar Jasper-Batson lead walking tours uncovering Melbourne’s most innovative, independent and ethical designers. “I talk about fashion but what I’m really referring to is clothing rather than trends,” says Donna. “We’re into things that will last and not look really dated within two seasons.” + fashionbyfoot.com

Life’s a Beach A landmark on the St Kilda seafront, The Esplanade Hotel – known to most as The Espy – has been slaking thirsts and entertaining the masses for more than 140 years. And it’s still doing that, but now punters have the choice of three onsite restaurants and 12 bars from which to choose. Arrive for lunch and stay for the rest of the day, exploring all that’s on offer.

Raise a Glass On a sunny day, there’s no better place to sit than in the front courtyard or on the terrace of the main bar. You get views of the water and a relaxed vibe. As the night progresses, head upstairs to the third floor to find a cocktail bar inspired by the life of former resident Alfred Felton.

On the Plate The Espy Kitchen

The Espy Kitchen is back with its own menu that matches its moody

ambience. Executive chef Ashly Hicks has restyled the offering to elevate pub classics using the finest seasonal ingredients. Upstairs, Mya Tiger and its chef Sarah Chan serve up a fun-filled feast of Cantonese cuisine, including dumplings, as well as cocktails infused with Asian flavours and a side of spectacular sunset views. If you’re looking for something casual, the Espy Main Bar and Terrace has a menu of classics like wood-fired pizza, burgers and chicken parmigiana.

Keeping It Fun It’s always been one of Melbourne’s favourite music venues, and the tradition lives on with the Gershwin Room hosting bands. Head down to The Espy for open mic night, local acts and DJ sets to get the party started. + hotelesplanade.com.au

When you’re spending a few days in Bendigo and want to immerse yourself in water head to Crusoe Reservoir, set in a huge area of bushland about 15 minutes’ drive from town. Work up a sweat on the 3.3-kilometre walking trail that surrounds it then jump right in. There’s a great swimming area, complete with pontoon, and it’s also popular with people who have a canoe, kayak or small sailboat. The waterway is stocked with tench, redfin, yellowbelly and Murray cod, so you might even want to throw in a line. + bendigo.vic.gov.au

High Thrills

If you’re ready to take on a once-ina-lifetime adventure, join Venture Out for a three-hour HeliSUP tour of East Gippsland. Yes, you read that right. First, you’ll take a scenic helicopter flight over the Gippsland Lakes before landing near 90 Mile Beach. Then you jump on a stand-up paddle board for a guided tour of Lakes Entrance. It’s a great way to see this spectacular part of the state if you’ve only got a short time to explore. + ventureout.com.au

Get to Geelong

The grand buildings of Bendigo hark back to goldrush days, when it was one of the richest cities in the world. You can explore that history across the city – it’s about two hours from Melbourne with V/Line – by joining Bendigo Walking Tours. Before the sun sets, head to Nimbus Rooftop, the only sky-high cocktail bar in central Victoria. Keep the heritage going with a night out at Ms Batterhams, a restaurant set in the basement of an old school hall. + bendigowalkingtours.com + nimbusrooftop.com.au + mackenziequarters.com/ msbatterhams

You can see why more people are commuting between Geelong and Melbourne: it’s an easy trip that only takes an hour, and the beach lifestyle is the ultimate bonus. Head here for a summer weekend of sunshine, sand and serious food. Take a morning stroll at Eastern Beach, then swim at the sea baths. Base yourself at R Hotel Geelong, where some of the rooms overlook the bay and it’s an easy walk to bustling Little Malop Street. Be sure to book a table at Felix, tucked into a laneway, where the chefs celebrate seafood. + rhotelgeelong.com.au + felixgeelong.com.au

The streets are filled with heritage buildings, but there are also buzzing food and cultural scenes in this pretty town. Set yourself up at The Provincial Hotel, across the road from the station (it’s 90 minutes from Melbourne). The Ballarat International Foto Biennale has been extended until 9 January, so check out Linda McCartney: Retrospective then head around town to see the works displayed indoors and out. Make reservations at Moon & Mountain, where the banquet menus are influenced by South-East Asia’s hawker stalls. + theprovincialballarat.com.au + ballaratfoto.org + moonandmountain.com.au

Wonderful Woodend

Ready for a weekend in a quintessential country village? Woodend, about an hour from Southern Cross Station on the train, has one long main street lined with country bakeries, book shops, interesting stores and cafes. Be sure to drop into Holgate Brewhouse for craft beer and pub classics, like chicken parma. There’s accommodation upstairs, and some rooms have views of Mount Macedon. Got a bike? Bring it with you and cycle to Hanging Rock. + holgatebrewhouse.com

Regional Take the tasty route

Take the Tasty Route When you head out of the city, the stars of the regional show are often the incredible producers, makers and chefs you discover along the way. Here, we follow four food trails. Our Food Bowl

Coast with the Most

Its fertile soils and bright sunshine make the Murray River region one of the finest places to grow produce. Satisfy all kinds of appetites when you spend a few days there and explore the Murray River Farm Gate Trail. Cheese, olive oil, garlic, vegetables, fruit, beef and wine are all part of its edible bounty. Stop at the Cheeky Grog Co to taste the cider or head to Cactus Country for something different. Explore the gardens with more than 4,000 species of succulents then try a piece of cactus cake or scoop of cactus ice-cream in the cafe. + visitthemurray.com.au

Sunny summer days are perfect for making your way along the Bellarine Taste Trail. Whether your tastes run to mussels straight from the sea or a juicy pinot noir you’ll be able to sate them. See how olives are grown and taste the gold they produce at Manzanillo Grove, stock the cupboard at Wildings Pantry Essentials then settle in for a sunset treat and fine seafood meal at On the Heads. + thebellarinetastetrail.com.au

Bet on Beer There’s no denying that in the past decade or so craft beer has become a big deal. If you want to add some microbrewery magic to your next trip to Bendigo, follow the Goldfields Ale Trail. You’ll soon be sipping on pale ale at Palling Bros Brewery in Heathcote, exploring the selection at Bendigo’s Handle Bar or sampling the latest sour while watching a band at Cornella Brewery. + bendigoregion.com.au

Only the Best When a region is known for its amazing diversity of gourmet experiences it can be hard to know where to start. Which is why the Food Worth the Road Trip itinerary, put together for Daylesford and the Macedon Ranges, is so helpful. It’s a list of the best of everything in 10 categories, from all-day breakfasts to bubbly. And since we often find ourselves hankering for cheese, we’ll definitely be taking the tip to visit Winespeake. + daylesfordmacedonlife.com.au Cornella Brewery
