If you’re just looking to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life, you’ll find that place of freedom and tranquillity in stunning Worcestershire. Worcester, in the heart of the county is a city of historical importance with considerable cultural heritage. Sir Edward Elgar, England’s greatest composer made his mark on the city with music, arts and entertainment being embedded into the city’s core with a fantastic calendar of events. Explore beyond the city and you will find a mixture of attractions which will entice you to stay even longer, from family fun
on Steam Train Specials, festivals and events galore to museums and art galleries including the brand new Ashmolean Museum in Broadway. The contrasting landscapes of hill ranges, river valleys and ancient forests, alongside the county’s distinct heritage offer of iron age hill forts, stately homes, steam railways, Civil War connections and Victorian industrial heritage, provide an experience unlike any other. The quaint villages dotted throughout the county also add that extra something special with beautiful honey coloured Cotswold villages in the south and plenty of black and white villages in the rest of the county, which add a little bit more of the past into Worcestershire’s tourism charm.

Key for Bewdley, Stourport-on-Severn, Kidderminster, Bromsgrove and Redditch Town Centre Maps
Please refer to listings in this guide and contact the Tourist Information Centres for opening times and further up-to-date information.
1
For breathtaking views of the city, brave the climb to the top of Worcester Cathedral’s tower. On a clear day you get a perfect view of the Malvern Hills to the south west and the Lickey Hills to the north. See page 23
2
Set the scene by walking the hills that inspired Elgar to write his famous compositions before seeing where it all began and learning about the real man at his Birthplace. See page 8
3
Follow the meandering River Severn, taking in forests and nearby arboretums: by steam train through Georgian Bewdley – taking in West Midlands Safari Park and crossing the mighty 200 ft span Victoria Bridge – or by foot and boat through Stourport’s leisure attractions and historic canal basins.
4
Visit the Morgan car factory, the UK’s last privately owned car manufacturer and see them building the Morgan sports car. For an extra special treat, hire one for the day.
5
Experience 25 historic, rescued and rebuilt buildings at Avoncroft Museum – including one with a fourteenth century roof and post WW2 prefabs
– on a beautiful 15 acre open-air site on the outskirts of Bromsgrove.
6
The small market town of Tenbury Wells, fondly known by Queen Victoria as the little town in the orchard, is famous for its vast variety of apples and national mistletoe sales.
7
Take a fascinating journey through time from where Worcester Porcelain began in 1751 right through to the present day. See page 15
8
Firing up with the noise of an express train, set your watch to the Perseus & Andromeda Fountain display at Witley Court & Gardens. See page 16
9
Visit two attractions in one at Forge Mill Needle Museum in Redditch – an unusual and fascinating place illustrating the rich heritage of the needle and fishing tackle industries. On the same site, are the ruins of Bordesley Abbey – a medieval Cistercian Abbey. See page 10

Canals & Waterways
Explore Worcester, The Malverns & North Worcestershire
MID WORCESTERSHIRE RING In 2011, the Droitwich Canals reopened – more than 70 years after being officially abandoned. They were an important part of Worcestershire’s industrial history linking the salt mining industry to the River Severn and the Birmingham-Worcester Canal, which together make up the Mid Worcestershire Ring. The ring allows boats, cyclists and walkers to make a 21-mile circular journey through some of the Britain’s most beautiful and historic countryside. As part of the canal restoration project, a linear park has been created providing picnic sites, fishing pegs, and new stop off points for boaters, walkers and cyclists. Miles of towpath have also been upgraded, with new and improved access points and 26 new visitor moorings. The area is also rich in wildlife so everyone can enjoy the sights and sounds of nature up close.
CYCLING The ring is linked up to the National Cycle Network so you can also enjoy many other places in Worcestershire as well as using the Network as a sustainable transport method.
WATER-SPORTS Go kayaking along the river and canals to immerse yourself in the peace and tranquillity of the Ring, get up close to wildlife and enjoy the countryside as you move along. 28
