An historic city with a riverside location
GLORIOUS BANKS OF THE RIVER SEVERN Worcester city lies on the glorious banks of the River Severn and is also located on the Midland’s canal network. The Canal and River Trust have lovingly restored the Droitwich Canals. Restoration has reinstated a 21-mile waterway ring which links the Birmingham to Worcester Canal, the River Severn and the Droitwich Canals to form the Mid Worcestershire Ring. The river and canal network allows you to feel in the middle of the countryside right in the centre of the city, with the opportunity to take leisurely walks and bicycle rides, hire boats for day trips, short breaks and holidays as well enjoying some fabulous food and drink in a choice of riverside restaurants.

The city centre is also home to a fabulous array of High Street shops and independent retailers, these are particularly located in the old part of the city centre on Friar Street and New Street.

FLOWER FESTIVAL The annual Worcester Flower Show will be taking over the Green Flag awarded Gheluvelt Park on Sunday 17th August 2014, and is a very popular fun-filled summer event part of the Worcester Festival (9th - 25th August 2014). Whether you plan to enter your prized flowers, vegetables, culinary masterpieces or crafts, browse the renowned horticultural displays, or take part in the interactive workshops - the Worcester Flower Show is the place to be!

ARTS AND MUSIC Arts and music are very much a core theme within the city, with a huge variety of festivals and events taking place throughout the summer. This love for music and the arts has a vast history with the Three Choirs Festival dating back to the very early 1700’s. This year the Three Choirs Festival will be hosted in Worcester, but it is not the only festival worth visiting the city for. Worcester
Music Festival is a free metropolitan music festival taking place from 29th – 31st August 2014, showcasing new and emerging artists from across the UK and beyond. The Festival weekend caters for the entire family and includes workshops for both adults and children, in addition to all the gigs at many venues across Worcester city centre. The Festival is free and raises money for charity through collections.
STEEPED IN HISTORY Worcester city is steeped in history with the first and last battles of the Civil War being held within its walls. Worcester is still renowned as ‘The Faithful City’, being the last city to stand up for King Charles II against Oliver Cromwell in 1651. Worcester’s magnificent cathedral rises up alongside the River Severn and lies at the heart this historic city. Worcester Cathedral dates back to the 11th century, and was once a university for monks. The cathedral’s library still houses ancient medieval text books on medicine, law, history, mathematics, physics, and astronomy. Worcester Cathedral also has connections with the anniversary of the ancient charter, the Magna Carta, with King John being buried within the cathedral walls.

VISIT NORTH WORCESTERSHIRE ATTRACTIONS AND STAY A WHILE Just a short distance from the cosmopolitan city of Birmingham, North Worcestershire stretches from Redditch to Bewdley and is a welcome break from the hustle and bustle.
During August, Sunday afternoon concerts take place at local parks in Bromsgrove, Kidderminster, Bewdley and Stourport. On Sunday 1st June music lovers can look forward to Rock and Roll and Country and Western at the Stourport Riverside Meadows. A beautiful spot by the river close to the historic Canal Basins, with plenty of open green space and a wide range of attractions including boats for hire, river cruises, fairground rides, a skate park, paddling pool and other family entertainment suitable for all ages. Sticking with the historical theme, the Harvington Festival starting 6th July, is held in the spectacular grounds of Harvington Hall, a moated medieval and
Elizabethan manor-house south-east of Kidderminster. For more drama, pay a visit to Bodenham Arboretum, near Kidderminster, an area of outstanding natural beauty, containing mature woodland, 11 pools and four miles of footpaths – which is hosting a Viking Weekend on 19th-20th July. Other festivals and events around the area include Bewdley Spring Fayre (3rd-4th May), Bewdley Carnival (8th June), Bromsgrove Festival (14th June-20th July), Kidderminster Carnival (21st June), Kidderminster Arts Festival (24th August), Far Forest Countryside Show (10th August), Stourport Vintage Steam Rally (12-13th July), the Trimpley Heavy Horse Festival (27th July), a national regatta of top-class rowing on the River Severn at Stourport (9th-10th August) and Stourport Land and River Carnival (6th September).

TOWN CENTRES Like most Town Centres and High Streets North Worcestershire has seen an ever increasing offer to visitors – whilst appreciating beautiful architecture, visitors can also eat, shop, take in a film or show and in some cases even go to the gym!
GETTING BACK TO NATURE
MORE TREES THAN SHERWOOD FOREST Built within the Royal Feckenham Forest, covering large parts of west Worcestershire, Redditch benefits from a mix of old and new. Bordesley Abbey Visitor Centre, set along the ruins of a medieval Cistercian Abbey which gave the town it’s name (The Red Dyche) sits nicely next to Forge Mill - a needle museum, showing a vivid illustration of how once upon a time, 90 per cent of the world’s needles were produced in the town. The Visitor Centre has a large pleasant grassed area, a park with picnic tables and children’s play area. Arrow Valley Park is one of two National Green Flag parks in Redditch and the largest area of open space
in the borough covering over 900 acres. It’s hard to believe you’re in an urban environment when walking or cycling around this vast open space. A tarmac footpath provides full disabled access around both the park and the 29 acre ‘man made’ Arrow Valley Lake which also provides fishing from 6am to dusk. The focal point is the Visitor Centre, situated with lakeside panoramic views which you can enjoy from the indoor cafe or outside picnic tables. An extensive playground area with slides, climbing nets, swings and frames feature in this multi-level, state of the art play area and outside gym available at no charge completes this most special attraction.

Close to Bromsgrove you will find countryside attractions of the Clent Hills (National Trust) and the Walton Hills. With just under a million people visiting each year, you can see why TV presenter Adrian Chiles chose it as his favourite ‘hidden tourist attraction’. The Clent Hills are graced with several classically inspired architectural works from about the 1750s. Most of them are in the private grounds of 18th Century Hagley Hall which is open to the public. Bewdley is the gateway to the ancient forest of Wyre, featuring a cafe and Discovery Centre. Its surrounding woodlands are fantastic places to enjoy the fresh air and have fun outdoors. There is something for everyone all year round, from walking and family cycling to Go Ape - high wire adventure. Arley Arboretum near Kidderminster is another natural beauty - discover a tranquil wonderland of rare and ancient trees, exquisite walled gardens and panoramic views.
HOME TO THE REGION’S ONLY SAFARI PARK Visit West Midland Safari Park, winner of the Group Travel national ‘Best Animal Attraction’ award, an all weather 4 mile safari, which runs late night tours throughout August. rom the Norman Conquest onwards, the Hanbury estate was within the boundaries of the Royal Forest of Feckenham, the 18th century country house of Hanbury Hall under the care of the National Trust is open to the public all year round except Christmas and Boxing day. On the way to or from, call in at the Jinney Ring Craft Centre – a great place to see crafts people working in their own individual businesses. Visit a large quirky gift shop and gallery both selling unusual gifts and works of art.
Over in Bewdley and set in a historic Butchers Shambles, the fascinating displays at Bewdley Museum give an insight into the trades and crafts of the Wyre Forest area in a delightful setting. With hands-on activities and regular craft demonstrations there’s plenty to see and do for the whole family, including the brass foundry, jails, resident crafts people, air raid shelter tours, varied exhibitions and events. Visit the adjacent Jubilee Gardens and Community Orchard where you can sit peacefully and watch the world go by.
At The Transport Museum at Wythall you will find a collection of buses and battery electric vehicles, plus a miniature steam railway that operates on event days- along with a cafe and souvenir shop you are sure to have a great day.
The County Museum at Hartlebury Castle and Severn Valley Railway which runs 16 miles from Kidderminster both host regular events and themed weekends throughout the year as does the country’s only museum dedicated to carpet manufacturing – on which Kidderminster’s history was built.
Avoncroft Museum of Historic Buildings, England’s first open air museum of 27 rescued buildings, also hosts The National Telephone Kiosk Collection and a ride on Model Train available on event days. Benefiting from an award winning Edwardian Tea Room which is also available to non museum visitors (except on busy event days), the cafe uses fresh local produce including some from the Museums very own period garden.

BLOSSOM BIKEAWAY With 2014 being the VisitEngland Year of the Bike, the Blossom Bikeaway provides the perfect excuse to join in the fun while exploring the breathtaking Blossom Trail. The Blossom Trail is among five major blossom events on earth, with others taking place in Japan and the USA. On Sunday 27th April the Bikeaway will play host to crowds of keen cyclists as they begin their journey from Hampton Ferry. Hampton Ferry, situated at the end of Boat Lane in Evesham has been home to the same family since 1929. Starting as a smallholding market garden and ferry, it was the only link between Hampton and Evesham.

Droitwich Spa’s summer event programme starts with St. Richard’s Boat and Car Festival from Friday 2nd – Monday 5th May. Highlights of the weekend are a boating festival, live music, medieval re-enactment, markets, classic and vintage cars, real ale bar, art exhibition, stalls and activities. www.strichardsfestival.co.uk The Blossom Bikeaway has a choice of four routes to suit all ages and abilities which will provide cyclists with enchanting views. BRITISH ASPARAGUS FESTIVAL IN THE VALE OF EVESHAM St George’s Day marks the beginning of the Asparagus Festival with the Great English Asparagus Run. From 23rd April to 21st June the Vale of Evesham will be going Asparamad with numerous events taking place providing the opportunity to taste, buy, cook and learn about one of the nations most sought after delicacies.
Following this is Droitwich Spa Festival from Friday 20th June – Sunday 6th July. The Festival features a packed programme of local, food, music and arts events. The Food and Drink Festival on Saturday 21st June is a great event with its huge selection of local and regional producers, demonstration kitchen, live music and entertainment. Other events include a literary festival, art displays, theatre performances, live music, cheese and cider festival and the Big Picnic.

The final event of the summer is Salt Fest on Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th September. The event celebrates Droitwich Spa past and present offering the chance to find out about the town’s salt heritage. Malvern Hills An area of outstanding natural beauty TOWN OF FESTIVALS… Upton Upon Severn has the enviable title as ‘Town of Festivals’. It must be one of the few towns in England that can say they have a festival for every taste. There is a separate festival of Folk, Blues, Jazz and also Pop and Rock music plus a host of smaller produce markets held often throughout the summer.
The refurbished Tourist Information and Heritage Centre hold a wealth of guides and information on Upton’s rich history. Relax at one of the riverside pubs and watch the world drift by. THE GREAT MALVERN FOOD FESTIVAL FORAY In the lead-up to the food festival on Sunday 25th May there will be a food themed walk across the Malvern Hills. The 8 mile walk entitled ‘The Great Malvern Food Foray’ will give visitors the opportunity to sample local food, drink and entertainment at various stops along the way.
HIGH QUALITY LOCAL FOOD AND DRINK ON YOUR DOORSTEP Local award winning food and drink producers can be found throughout the district offering everything from meats, bread and cheeses to beer and cider. As well as many farm shop outlets and delicatessens there are farmers markets and food festivals in Malvern, Upton and Tenbury throughout the summer months. The famous inventors of Worcestershire Sauce had a bottling business in Great Malvern before moving to Worcester in the 1800’s where they created their now world famous Lea Perrins Sauce. The story of local entrepreneurs continues to this day with companies such as ‘Holywell Malvern Spring Water’, now the key bottler of natural water in the area. One of the biggest events in the Malvern calendar is the RHS Malvern Spring Festival (8th-11th May) that takes place at the Three Counties Showground. This year a food festival will be included in the main programme – top chefs such as BBC TV’s Saturday Kitchen favourite James Martin will be appearing and there will also be a Food Court offering a range of artisan food and drink from regional, national and international producers. On a slightly smaller scale but no less important is the Great Malvern Food Festival which will be taking place on May Bank Holiday Monday (26th May) in the grounds of the historic Priory Church. The event prides itself on local high quality food and drink attracting producers from around Worcestershire. As well as dedicated food and drink stalls there will be a range of talks and demonstrations from some of the areas leading chefs.

WHY NOT EXTEND YOUR STAY Spring and summer are a great time to come for an extended visit. VisitEngland Year of the Bike Campaign and What a Year in Worcestershire! Visit Worcestershire in the ‘Year of the Bike’ and you will be pleasantly surprised by the amount of cycling routes spread across the county and the choice cycling events. On 3rd June the Pearl Izumi Tour Series visits Redditch for the third year running and on 10th September the county will host the forth stage of the Tour of Britain, the UK’s biggest professional cycle race which will be starting in Worcester city. Worcester city will also host the Run Bike Run event on 21st September. There are also Blossom Trail Bikeaways in the springtime and later on in October, a World War I Sponsored Bike Ride in Gheluvelt Park, commemorating the Battle of Gheluvelt, which took place on 31st October 1914. Worcestershire is a great county to get out and about in and there is no better
way to explore the county than getting on a bicycle and watching the lush green landscape pass you by. The county features on three NCN cycle networks, making cycling a great way to get from A to B between the historic riverside city and the quaint market towns. Wyre Forest (Forestry Commission) has a variety of cycling routes to choose from, whatever your ability, but the Forest is a particular favourite for families with young children who can enjoy the family cycling trail. You can also test your mountain bike skills at Kingsford Forest Park, home to a downhill mountain bike trail. There are numerous other cycling routes available in Worcestershire through country parks and way-marked country locations and many more events happening in the VisitEngland ‘Year of the Bike’.

OUTDOORS Go With The Flow at a Brand New River Festival The Severn Festival is a brand new event being launched in 2014. The Festival will be held on the 30th August, on the glorious banks of the River Severn in the historic city of Worcester. This new event will celebrate the river including a range of boat races, and not to mention a local food and drink market with local produce grown on the fertile plains of the UK’s longest river. The Festival will also include a local arts and crafts market as well as musical performances, which will be held along the riverside and throughout the city, as part of Worcester Music Festival which is being held 29th - 31st August 2014. www.visitworcestershire.org/severnfestival

GUIDED TOURS OF HOLYWELL Holywell are now offering guided tours which provide an insight into the background of the Malvern’s Victorian Water Cure and a history of Malvern Water and the crucial role Holywell has played - both before and after Schweppes. The tour includes a look at the bottling facility with a full question and answer opportunity. The tour lasts for approximately 40 minutes. Booking is essential, with tours available Monday to Friday from 9am-5pm and occasionally at weekends too. A WONDERFUL PROGRAMME OF WALKS Malvern Walking Festival, now in its 11th year, has yet another wonderful programme of walks organised and ready for the 2014 nine-day Festival. As usual, there is a great mixture of walks from nice gentle, easy strolls to more demanding walks which include, the flagship 59-mile, six day Discovery Trail, the 31-mile Worcestershire-Way-in-a-day, the 18-mile Malvern-Hills-End-to-End-and-Back.
Badger Watching Enjoy a peaceful relaxing holiday at Hop Pickers Barn in Leigh, near Worcester and take part in the 2014 Badger watching project from the new hide. People staying in at the VisitEngland 4 Star Gold Award accredited self catering property can venture up past the old Oast pond into attractive woodland that surrounds the paddock. In the hide there is room for up to four people to sit and view the active badger sett.
The extensive sett is very well established with many entrance holes and a labyrinth of interlinking tunnels which connect the sleeping and nursery chambers deep underground. Worcestershire’s historic motorsport venue, the Shelsley Walsh Hill Climb, which hosts rounds of the MSA British Hill Climb Championship has again had a very busy few months working with a number of TV companies as it looks to raise its profile for the forthcoming season. Back in August 2013 the BBC filmed an episode of Father Brown, the detective series based in the Cotswolds, which aired on the 17th January. Filming took three days and used extras from the
motorsport club alongside local actor Mark Williams, who plays Father Brown. This was quickly followed with the filming of the BBC’s highly rated motoring show Top Gear, where the three presenters, two of whom live near to the Hill Climb, visited as part of the filming for the new series due to aired in February. New Road To Host England Lions This August England Lions will host New Zealand ‘A’ and Sri Lanka ‘A’ in a triangular One-Day series later this summer at Worcestershire County Cricket Club. THE BEST VENUE IN WORCESTERSHIRE - BAR “NUN” The renovation of Stanbrook Abbey has begun! 2014 signals the start of the evolvement of this iconic events venue, as the exciting renovation work commences. Stanbrook Abbey was purchased in 1835 by a community of Benedictine nuns who called the Abbey their home for over 170 years. In 2009, it was purchased by Mike Clare (founder of Dreams Bed Company) and underwent extensive refurbishment prior to opening the first phase in September 2012. Stanbrook Abbey forms part of the newly launched AmaZing Venues collection, a group of iconic and historical properties.

This year you can choose exactly which day you want to visit Hanbury Hall (National Trust). The doors are open everyday through until 23rd December 2014. With new things to see and do in the house, gardens and park, 2014 is set to be an exciting year to come and visit. 2014 marks two special anniversaries for the gardens and park here. Twenty years ago, the head gardener, Neil Cook, led the project to reinstate George London’s original gardens from plans found in Worcester Records Office during a research project. The gardens, which include a formal parterre, bowling green and orchards have now matured and are kept to very high standards by a team of staff and volunteers. It is now also three hundred years since the creator of the original garden and parkland features, George London died.

REVIVAL AT SPETCHLEY Lower Brockhampton Medieval Manor House An additional seven rooms will be opening in July 2014 in the Manor House at Lower Brockhampton. The estate and house will be re-interpreted to share captivating stories; from the Norman chapel ruins in the 1180s, through the medieval, Tudor, Jacobean, Victorian and modern eras. This timeless estate captures the spirit of rural Herefordshire on the borders of Worcestershire, in 1,700-acres of open parkland with traditional orchards, working farmland and ancient woodland. Gifted to the National Trust in 1946 by Colonel John Talbot Lutley, the estate offers way-marked walks with breathtaking views across the surrounding countryside. Surrounded by a moat and borders of colourful seasonal flowers, the house is entered via a charming timber-framed gatehouse. Experience the Great Hall where feasts and celebrations have been held throughout the centuries.
Spetchley park gardens, just 3 miles from Worcester city centre, is undergoing a five year Revival Project aimed at improving the visitor experience as well as preserving one of the finest examples of Victorian planting and 18th century landscapes in the country. Spetchley has just received a grant from the Rural Development Programme for England to help finance the building of a new car park and Welcome Centre. Work on the construction of this began in January and whilst it will not be completed by the time the gardens open on 2nd April, it will be officially be opened in June. This will give the gardens much needed parking space as well as an increase in retail and plant sale space. Coupled with this and as part of the Revival Project is the preparation of a second round application to the Heritage Lottery Fund. This follows the awarding of a development grant and is aimed at converting the old cart sheds into a Heritage Interpretation and Education Centre as well as reviving the 19th century garden lake. Spetchley, with its beautiful garden, fun children’s activity packs, fabulous deer park and inviting tea room really is a wonderful place to visit. ‘WE WORKED AT THE PORCELAIN’ EXHIBITION For over 250 years, Royal Worcester employed men, women and children to produce the exquisite porcelain that was known around the world for its beauty and quality. To celebrate the people who made it all happen, the Museum of Royal Worcester is hosting an exhibition of photographs focusing on some of the company’s many craftsmen and women. The exhibition contains images of employees from the last 50 years of the factory’s operation, all of whom are currently unknown. These images are on display for the first time to celebrate the continuing story of Royal Worcester and to find out more about this last generation of employees who worked at ‘The Porcelain’. www.museumofroyalworcester.org

Worcester Festival, being held 9th - 25th August 2014, is now in its 12th year and is packed full of exciting and innovative events, with loads for free and suitable for the whole family. Look out for the Festival favourites such as Percy the Peacock, Funky Faces face painters, the Artists’ Market and the Gugge Band plus many more new and exciting events. During Festival time, it is near impossible to walk along the High Street without seeing some live music, dancing or some weird and wonderful street theatre. The Festival holds a range of workshops and events specifically for children including arts and crafts, dance classes, musical theatre courses, and a children’s ghost walk. For people on a tight budget there are hundreds of free events. The Festival also includes the CAMRA Beer, Cider and Perry Festival from 7th - 9th August 2014, which is one of the largest in the Midlands, with hundreds of different varieties to choose from. The Festival finishes on Bank Holiday Monday with the iconic free firework display. Thousands gather along the riverside to eagerly await the biggest, most spectacular free firework display in Worcester. Upton Folk Festival The Folk Festival has been running for over 25 years showcasing a wide range of traditional music, song and dance and this year will be held 2nd - 5th May 2014. The town is thronged all day with dancers, musicians and other entertainers who perform on the riverside and in the pubs, providing a wealth of free entertainment. The Festival closely involves the town, with formal events in the church, pub rooms, the museum and the Memorial Hall. During the day, the riverside is also home to a “craft” market. The Festival will be opened on 30th May 2014 The Sunday procession includes up to six hundred dancers. It is one of the biggest in the country and attracts a fantastic crowd to admire the thirty minute spectacle. During the weekend it can be difficult to find a pub for a quiet drink, as music and song is played continuously from opening time to the wee small hours! In addition to the ticketed concerts, there are a number of free events including workshops, Ceilidhs under the bridge and the Musical Meander. www.uptonfolk.org

Three Choirs Festival Worcester - the world’s finest choral music! IDYLLIC COTSWOLD VILLAGE SETTING FOR AN INTERNATIONAL ARTS FESTIVAL Broadway Arts Festival has its origin in the late 19th century, when the famous American artist John Singer Sargent paid many visits to this idyllic Cotswold village, during which he painted his masterpiece ‘Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose’. The spirit of that age, when the Broadway Colony flourished and many distinguished artists, musicians and authors spent time together, is now celebrated by the biennial Broadway Arts Festival.
Brian Sewell and will run until 15th June 2014. Its theme is ‘Changing Times’ - looking back 100 years to the era before the Great War; a Golden Age, but also a time of social unrest, political and industrial upheaval. As part of the Festival the new Ashmolean Museum in Broadway will host a special exhibition of Sargent’s work previously not shown publicly; there’s also a national Art Competition, art and music activities for the village’s school children and fringe event.
