So whether visiting with friends, a family – young or old, there really is something for everyone. The city is best known for its magnificent Cathedral but is also famous for the world renowned Worcester Porcelain, the piquant Worcestershire Sauce and the most picturesque cricket ground in the country. To really appreciate the unique architecture of the city, brave the 235 steps of the Cathedral Tower. Take a stroll around the city centre and explore The Commandery to learn about our important role in the English Civil War. See a contemporary exhibition at the City Art Gallery and admire the half-timbered buildings in Friar Street. These include Greyfriars’ House & Garden and the 500 year old Tudor House. If you prefer to join a guided tour around the city, walks are available every day, morning and evening, from the Guildhall which in its own right is a truly beautiful building dating back to 1721.
For the keen shopper Worcester boasts a unique shopping experience with a mix of the very best High Street names; House of Fraser, Marks & Spencer, Joules, Jack Wills and an unrivalled selection of independent shops and boutiques. 2015 is set to be a year full of fantastic celebrations, commemorations and events in Worcester. Cricket has been played at New Road for 150 years, productions have been performed for 50 years at the Swan Theatre, barges have been sailing from Worcester to Birmingham for 200 years and the famous Magna Carta was agreed 800 years ago. Explore The Malverns
The Malverns A breath of fresh air – where Culture, Heritage and Nature come together. Escape to a landscape untouched by time. Malvern, once described as ‘middle England personified’ offers a wide range of things to see and do. The Malvern Hills extend for nine miles, offering ideal walking conditions and spectacular views stretching to the Cotswolds and the Welsh Marches. The area has inspired many great artists such as English composer Sir Edward Elgar and famed authors W.H. Auden, C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien. Malvern is also the home of the 11th century Great Malvern Priory, the Morgan Motor Company and the source of the world renowned Malvern Spring Water. Whether in Malvern, Upton upon Severn or Tenbury Wells there is something for everyone, from guided walks and trails to gardens, exploring history at the heritage centres and local museums, premier theatre or just relaxing in a health spa. Other attractions in the area range from historic properties such as Croome, Witley Court & Gardens, the Elgar Birthplace Museum to vineyards and spa facilities.
The Elgar Trail and the Teme Valley Trail offer the visitor opportunities to take in the inspirational English countryside. A hub for events, Malvern is home to the Three Counties Showground as well as the Malvern Theatres, famous for its programme of top touring drama and musicals. The riverside town of Upton upon Severn hosts a vibrant year-long events programme which includes Jazz, Folk, Blues and now an international rock and pop festival. Tenbury Wells is the home of English mistletoe, hosting the largest holly and mistletoe market, and the only mistletoe season, in the UK. The area is also famous for cider apples, and Tenbury holds an annual Applefest in October. The Malverns are a visitor destination for all seasons and a warm welcome for all awaits. Explore Wychavon
Wychavon The beautiful Wychavon district stretches from the Cotswold village of Broadway and the Vale of Evesham in the south, to the salt heritage of Droitwich Spa in the north. The wonderful natural environment is complemented by built influences from the Georgians, Victorians, and even medieval and Roman times.
purple for the Plum Festival. Bank Holiday weekend sees thousands of plummy devotes descend on the town to enjoy the fruits at this multi award-winning event.
In the springtime, the Vale of Evesham is awash with blossom. Hillsides rising from the Avon shimmer with plum white and apple pink, and country lanes offer views into orchards behind the damson trees traditionally planted in hedgerows to protect the main fruit from the wind. This is the time to follow the 45 mile AA signed Blossom Trail by car, coach or bicycle, to admire the views across the Vale and eat in a local pub or restaurant.
September sees Salt Fest in Droitwich Spa, celebrating the saline heritage going back to the Roman times. The town buzzes with activities over the weekend, with craft and farmers’ markets, music and entertainment, and of course the Romans all contributing to a colourful, vibrant event.
The British Asparagus Festival in the Vale of Evesham runs from St George’s Day, the 23rd April, to Midsummers Day on the 21st June, so time your visit to enjoy the sights and scents of the blossom, quirky events, festivals and the best local produce in town and village pubs and restaurants.
Whether a boat trip on the Mid Worcestershire Canal Ring, a stay in a farmhouse B&B, a Cotswold walk, a rural break in a quality hotel, buying local produce in a farm shop or enjoying one of many great festivals, this part of Worcestershire has everything for a perfect trip, short stay or longer break.
