WORCESTER CITY

W

orcester is a beautiful Cathedral & University city with a wealth of history, heritage, sports and culture so whether it’s a romantic break for two, visiting with friends or a family, young and old, there really is something for everyone. A trip to the city would not be complete without a visit to the magnificent Cathedral, but are you brave enough to climb the 235 steps to get an eagles eye view of the city from the top of the tower? Worcester is also home to the world renowned Worcester Porcelain, the piquant Worcestershire Sauce that is, to this day, produced in Worcester and the most picturesque cricket ground in the country.

Worcester City

A historic city with a modern outlook

AN INDUSTRIAL PAST Famous for it’s Worcestershire Sauce and exquisite porcelain but did you know that Worcester was also a hive of industry producing fine gloves, vinegar, cast iron and much more? Worcestershire Sauce is still to this day made in Worcester with a secret recipe from India that wasn’t first mixed by master chefs but chemists John Wheeley Lea & William Perrins. Lord Sandys presented Mr Lea & Mr Perrins with the recipe and on first attempt the taste was putrid, however, leaving it to mature for a few years developed the piquant taste that we know today. Once perfected in 1837 the sauce was bottled and sold around the world. Dr Wall first opened the doors of the Royal Worcester Porcelain factory in 1751 to create fine tableware and intricate porcelain models of birds, flowers and figurines. Today the museum takes you on a journey through the evolution of the factory works up until the modern day. In the 1700s around 17,000 were employed in the gloving industry in Worcester producing world famous gloves; Dents & Fownes. In the 1960s the last gloving factory closed and is now The Fownes Hotel.

THE ENGLISH CIVIL WAR Worcester is “the ground where Liberty was fought” according to 2nd president of the USA John Adams, on a visit to Fort Royal Park with Thomas Jefferson in 1876. They were talking about the English Civil War, which both started with the first skirmish of the conflict at Powick Bridge in 1642 on the edge of modern-day Worcester, and ended nine years later with the Battle of Worcester in 1651. Many sites in Worcester bear witness to the struggle between Royalist (King Charles I) and Parliamentarian (Oliver Cromwell) troops: St. Martin’s Gate, Fort Royal, the Cathedral, The Commandery, The Greyfriars and the King Charles House.

ARTS & CULTURE IN WORCESTER All within the compact city centre is a varied choice of art galleries, theatres with a vibrant programme of events such as the Riverside Artists Market, Worcester Music Festival, Worcester Literary Festival and world famous Three Choirs Festival. The Worcester Music Festival is a mix of professional and community events with performances of every musical genre, so whether you enjoy rock and heavy metal or pop and the blues there will be an event to suit your taste. The Three Choirs Festival is the worlds oldest classical and choral music festival and it comes to Worcester once every three years in August. Started in the early 18th century, the event is rotated between the other local cathedral cities of Hereford & Gloucester. Don’t miss the opportunity to enjoy the festival hosted by Worcester in 2014.

North Worcestershire A destination with a difference

I

n today’s busy world, opportunities to spend quality time with friends and family can be few and far between, which is why it’s important to make the most of them. Families or groups looking for a break with a difference will find themselves spoilt for choice in North Worcestershire. Centrally located and easilyaccessible, for most people in the UK this beautiful area is just a couple of hours away, making it an ideal destination for a short break or a reunion with friends or family. In and around the five principal towns of Bewdley, Bromsgrove, Kidderminster, Redditch and Stourport-on-Severn, visitors will find an amazing range of interesting and unusual things to

do, as well as places to stay. There’s also no shortage of great places to eat. At the Woodcolliers Arms in the picturesque Georgian riverside town of Bewdley, chef Boris Rumba serves dishes from his native Russia. His menu includes Atbivnaya, a dish prepared from an old family recipe, while in the winter he offers warming bowls of Borsch or Imperial Soup. Food and drink lovers are also in for a treat at Brockencote Hall, near Kidderminster, which has established itself as one of the Midlands’ finest hotels and restaurants. Set in 70 acres of parkland, the recently-refurbished Victorian country manor offers a selection of private dining facilities for groups and family

gatherings, as well as awardwinning food produced by head chef Adam Brown and his team. The hotel also boasts a superb wine cellar and as Adam’s menu states: “Food is our passion, wine is our pleasure.”

Above: West Midlands Safari Park is home to 165 species of exotic animals.

Wine is certainly the focus at Astley, near Stourport-on-Severn - home to one of Britain’s oldest vineyards. Guided tours can be arranged, by prior appointment, for groups of between 12 and 20 and all visitors are free to explore the five acres of vines, which are set in an idyllic wildlife haven. More importantly, there are plenty of opportunities to taste before you buy and the majority of Astley’s wines have won awards. They are also recommended by Rick Stein.

NORTH WORCESTERSHIRE For those who prefer to work up an appetite before enjoying the culinary delights on offer, the West Midlands Safari Park is an ideal spot to get pulses racing. Visitors can enjoy a drive on the wild side to view some of its 165 species of exotic animals as well as more than 25 thrilling rides in the adjoining theme park. Adrenaline is also par for the course at the nearby Go Ape adventure which is situated 40 feet up in the heart of the Wyre Forest. Ideal for groups and families, it offers an exhilarating course of rope ladders, tree-top high wires and zip slides. Those preferring to keep their feet on the ground could be more at home on the shooting range at Marksman Leisure in Hanbury where options range from clay pigeon and laser clay shooting to indoor and outdoor laser tag. Alternatively, why not step back in time and experience the golden age of steam on a trip along the 16-mile Severn Valley Railway running between Kidderminster and Bridgnorth. For accommodation that’s out of the ordinary, North Worcestershire boasts everything from country house hotels and elegant townhouses to cosy pubs and stunning barn conversions.

www.visitworcestershire.org There’s even a chance to follow in the footsteps of royalty at Kateshill House, a beautifully-restored Georgian manor on the outskirts of Bewdley. Now a fivestar, award-winning B&B, Kateshill was once part of Tickenhall Manor, the home of Prince Arthur, Prince of Wales, son of Henry VII. Within the grounds is an ancient Sweet Chestnut tree with a girth of more than 10 metres and branches that have grown unchecked over the centuries and now extend almost 25 metres. Legend has it that the tree was planted to commemorate Prince Arthur’s proxy wedding with Catherine of Aragon, who later married his brother, Henry VIII. Another theory is that the tree was planted in 1567 by Sir Henry Sidney, Lord High Admiral of England, to celebrate the birth of a daughter.

f you’ve still got the energy, North Worcestershire offers no shortage of options for evening entertainment and there’s a packed programme at the area’s two main arts centres - Bromsgrove’s Artrix and the Palace Theatre in Redditch. A modern theatre, cinema and live music centre, the annual Artrix schedule includes more than 200 performances ranging from chamber and orchestral concerts, jazz, folk and blues to top stand-up comedy, cutting edge theatre, dance and community-produced drama. Forthcoming acts over the autumn and winter include former Stranglers front man Hugh Cornwell, tributes to Abba, Led Zeppelin and the Rolling Stones, as well as comedians Mark Thomas, Jeremy Hardy and Ardal O’Hanlon, of Father Ted fame. TAKE IN THE AIR For over 100 years Malvern has been a key destination for wellness. A century ago doctors would have prescribed a cold bath and a run up the Malvern Hills before breakfast. Today you can simply relax and enjoy a quality spa experience at one of the areas leading hotels such as ‘The Malvern’ or ‘The Elms’ at Abberley.

FESTIVALS & FOLKLORE Tenbury Wells lies on the border of Worcestershire, Shropshire and Herefordshire. Nestled in the magical Teme Valley the town is steeped in history. There are still buried remains of an 11th century Norman Castle, known locally as Castle Tump, and a reminder of Tenbury’s spa heritage in the form of the historic Pump Rooms. For over 100 years Tenbury has been known for its winter mistletoe and holly auctions and now holds the prestigious title of ‘UK Mistletoe Capital’. The annual Mistletoe Season runs for six weeks featuring internationally renowned auctions, dance, storytelling and drama. This year British Poet Laureate Carol Anne Duffy will be appearing in the recently refurbished 1930’s Regal theatre. A famous Malvern legend relates to the Shadow of Ragged Stone Hill. It is said a curse befalls all who stand in the shadow of the Ragged Stone Hill on the Malvern Hills. This derives from the story, recorded by Charles Grindrod, of a 14th Century monk called John, who as a punishment for seeking the company of a woman was made to crawl on all fours up Ragged Stone Hill daily, while seeking forgiveness. Upton folk still fear the dark mysterious horseman who is said to haunt Rectory Road. Thomas Bound, a soldier in the Civil War is reputed to have killed each of his three wives before finally taking his own life in Causeway Pool. It is said that his ghost still haunts the local highway. The ‘Autumn in Malvern Festival’ runs throughout October featuring internationally respected classical artists, exhibitions and talks. Festival Director Peter Smith will be staging events celebrating the works of musicians and poets as diverse as Auden, Benjamin Britten and Arvo Part.

HISTORY IN THE ROCKS The rocks found in the main ridge of the Hills were formed in a geological period called the Pre-Cambrian which includes the very long period of time before there were many forms of life preserved as fossils. The age of the Malvern rocks is thought to be between 600 and 800 million years. The rock types are varied and many have been altered since their formation. The oldest of them are probably sediments laid down in a sea but these have had large volumes of molten rock squeezed into them under pressure. The Abberley and Malvern Hills Geopark is one of 10 Geoparks in the United Kingdom. Globally there are many Geoparks created to celebrate internationally renowned geological heritage and achieve sustainable development through geotourism.

Walk in the footsteps of the famous and take inspiration from the Malvern Hills stretching across this scenic landscape. Like some of our country’s greatest authors, poets and composers you will be inspired by the natural beauty of the region. From Tenbury Wells in the North, through Great Malvern to Upton, the Malverns include a designated area of outstanding natural beauty, alongside a variety of events to enjoy in the local towns which are rich in history. The land of the Malvern Hills and commons are home to a number of rare animals, plants, birds and butterflies. Great care is taken to protect these species, with a dedicated Wildlife Advisory Group supporting the Malvern Hills Conservators in protecting the local wildlife. As well as the more common species of mammal, rarer species such as the lesser horseshoe bat, the doormouse and the polecat are found on the Hills, and some 130 species of bird have been recorded, 70 as breeding species.

Whatever you decide to do during your stay, you will always receive a warm welcome in the Malverns.

as a coaching inn, it has been extended and adapted over the centuries and served at various periods as part of a school, a farm, and a private residence for various owners, including Benjamin Chandler, who refurbished the property with the Arts and Crafts architect, CE Mallows, in 1908. For nearly 80 years it was the headquarters for H.W. Keil Ltd, one of the leading dealers in antique furniture in the world. The objects on display are on loan from the Ashmolean Museum. They include paintings and furniture from the founding collections of the Ashmolean, given by Elias Ashmole to the University of Oxford in 1683. The displays are of fine and decorative art from the 17th to the 21st centuries over three floors, including local objects such as Sheldon tapestries, Worcester porcelain, Armorial Ceramics of Broadway families, William Morris tiles and Winchcombe Pottery. There are paintings by Gainsborough, Reynolds, Millais and Landseer. The Clover Mill - the place to be THE CLOVER MILL IS FAST BECOMING THE PLACE TO BE. TO BE RELAXED, YET REVITALISED, TO BE IN NATURE, TO BE IN A YOGA CLASS, TO BE IN A GORGEOUS TREATMENT ROOM HAVING A SUBLIME MASSAGE, OR, JUST, TO BE. The Clover Mill opened this spring. Formerly a crumbling water mill housing bats and ravens set in 11 acres of long untouched rural landscape, The Clover Mill is now sensitively restored and houses a yoga studio high in the loft, several treatment areas, showers and changing rooms and a luxury steam room down with the mill gearing. New Eco-lodges overlook the lake and here sleep guests on an Ayurvedic retreat. Ayurveda is a lifestyle science dating back thousands of years and is a tried and tested knowledge base of how to be healthy. Ayurveda sees each person as an individual and suggests a programme specific to that person. Diet plays a key role in Ayurveda – we are what we eat. The link between diet and many diseases, such as heart disease, diabetes and some cancers is well proven, yet GPs still give very little dietary advice. Ayurveda simply brings the intelligence of nature back into our ‘developed’ diet and lifestyle. At The Clover Mill, the two great sister systems of Ayurveda and Yoga work side by side to improve wellbeing. What better place than The Clover Mill to experience yoga, Ayurvedic meals, treatments and lifestyle tips, and simply, to be. www.theclovermill.com

With a thriving coffee shop and stylish cocktail bar, the Regal is the heart of the local community. For years it was neglected and derelict until funds were finally secured to buy the building and lovingly restore it with the help of hundreds of volunteers and helpers. The Regal now provides a vibrant and sustainable centre for film and the arts in Evesham and surrounding villages and were recently short-listed for the English Heritage Award for best restoration in the category sponsored by Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber. Our patron is local comedian Alistair McGowan who frequently plays to a packed house. The Regal regularly attracts other nationally acclaimed acts such as Nigel Kennedy and are proud to be part of National Theatre Live, Royal Shakespeare Company Live and Globe on Screen enabling them to screen live performances direct from London theatres. The New York Metropolitan Opera is an important initiative which we are pleased to support and our theatre-style venue is perfect for these sensational live performances. www.theregal.ac

Journey Through Turbulent Times in Harvington Hall’s Past Despite the difficult economic climate, Harvington Hall, near Kidderminster, Worcestershire, has still attracted plenty of visitors throughout the season. The glorious summer weather came at just the right time for the annual Harvington Festival, which, as always, involved several outdoor events. The Festival also coincided with the gardens open for the National Gardens Scheme and this year the borders, which are tended by Hall volunteers, looked better than ever. There are plenty of exciting events coming up for the Autumn and Winter Seasons, in particular a new venture called “Manor by Moonlight” where visitors experience an interactive journey through the turbulent times of the Hall’s past. The Hall, of course, is famous for its priests’ hiding places, and at this event visitors see the fascinating story of the Hall unfold before their eyes. As usual, there is a Christmas Elizabethan Evening, a special Christmas Open Day with the Hall beautifully decorated and re-enactments throughout all the rooms. There are also tours by Candlelight and a Christmas Wassail. The ever popular Hall tea-room, which can be accessed without paying to tour the Hall, will offer a special Christmas lunch event where visitors will be entertained to coffee in front of a log fire in the Hall’s Great Kitchen, before being guided on an Elizabethan tour. They finish with a traditional Christmas lunch in the decorated Moatside Tea Room. w ww.harvingtonhall.com

HISTORY Spectacular Architecture Well Worth A Visit Historic St Lawrence’s Church sits in the heart of Evesham, in the market town’s glorious riverside Abbey Park. Together with the nearby parish church of All Saints’ and the former Abbey’s imposing bell tower, the three buildings form a spectacular architectural group well worth a visit. The impressive church is of Norman foundation, but was significantly rebuilt in the 16th century. It fell into ruin in the 18th century and was rescued and restored by the local architect H. Eginton in 1836. Outside, the east end has a great six-light stained glass window with elaborate tracery. Inside, the early 16th-century south chapel has richly panelled arches and a beautiful fan vaulted ceiling. It was from here that a now disappeared corridor led from St. Lawrence’s to the former Abbey complex, providing a convenient covered walkway for the Abbey’s monks. Today, you can still see evidence of the historic Monk’s lives within Abbey Park. The church windows contain fabulous glass by many of the major stained glass artists of the last 150 years, some of which tell the story of the founding of Evesham.

Tenbury Wells Applefest TENBURY WELL’S ANNUAL CELEBRATION OF THE APPLE IS SET TO BE BIGGER THAN EVER THIS YEAR WITH HUNDREDS OF VARIETIES ON SHOW. The town’s historic link to the apple stretches back to 1832 when Princess Victoria visited Tenbury Wells with her mother the Duchess of Kent. She was presented with a basket of ‘The Stanardine’ apples by a local farmer. Before leaving she named the town ‘THE LITTLE TOWN IN THE ORCHARD’ and by Royal Command, the apples came to be known as ‘Princess Pippin’. Applefest takes place on Saturday 12th October on the Burgage in Tenbury Wells. Fruit expert Nick Dunn from Frank P Matthews is in charge of the famous ‘Applefest Marquee’. He said, “This year is expected to be a bumper crop so we are planning to display over 250 varieties of fruit on the day.” As well as the amazing array of apples on display at the festival, there will also be talks, demonstrations, music and children’s entertainment, plus a host of stalls offering the best in local food and drink. You can also learn about the history of local apple production, including how some of our great apples were named. ‘Scott Bridget’ is a Cherry Red apple with green patches believed to have been named in the Swan Hotel in Tenbury when a man placed two apples on the bar and enquired if anyone knew their name. No one did - so they decided to name them after the barmaid, she came from Scotland and her name was Bridget! www.Facebook.com/TenburyApplefest

FLAVOUR DELIGHT AS HISTORIC PUB REOPENS! Worcester’s oldest pub officially reopened earlier in 2013 amid much festive fun and merrymaking. The Cardinal’s Hat on historic Friar Street is now pulling in customers who appreciate a proper pint after originally closing in June last year due to the tough economic climate. New proprietor Nigel Smith, who is also the landlord of the National Trust-owned Fleece Inn at Bretforton near Evesham, has now brought the pub back to its former glory as an English ale house after a sensitive refurbishment. The honour of conducting the opening ceremony fell to national treasure and local porcelain expert Mr Henry Sandon, who gave an entertaining speech to the gathered crowd detailing a potted history of the eighteenth century premises. Orginally built in 1482, the Cardinal’s Hat was known as the Coventry Arms between 1814 and 1974 and was the local pub to Mr Sandon’s parents-in-law, who ran the Starkey Shoe Shop that was formally situated opposite. Following the official opening ceremony, passers by, customers and revellers from the Worcester Re-enactors were treated to a display of energetic Morris dancing from Pebworth Morris. Nigel, who is also a Morris dancer and member joined in the May Day display with great gusto. www.the-cardinals-hat.co.uk

Today there stands the building constructed by J Schweppes in 1843 which encompasses the only existing bottling facility for Malvern Water. Inside the building you will still find a public font with which to fill up your water bottle, as well as a free to enter visitor centre which contains story boards of the local history, geology and of course Malvern’s Victorian Water Cure. A REAL FAMILY AFFAIR

THE NEWLY REFURBISHED HOP POLE INN, WHICH OFFERS EXCELLENT FOOD AND SERVICE, IS JUST ONE OF THE REASONS TO VISIT THE HISTORIC GEORGIAN TOWN OF BEWDLEY Daren and Louise Bale, who took charge in September 2011, have created a welcoming and informal atmosphere where drinkers and diners alike can relax in comforting surroundings. Children and families are particularly welcome, which is not surprising given that The Hop Pole is a real family affair, Daren in the kitchen and Louise ‘out front’ helped by her sister Polly, while Louise’s mother makes the traditional puddings and Sally, her other sister, does the books! The innovative menu combines pub classics and creative modern cuisine, including a choice of ever-changing mid week specials –and all dishes are made using local produce where possible. For instance, you could start your meal with the Forest Pig Charcuterie Platter of awardwinning salamis and cured meats, or a Pressing of Local Game.
