Liberty ‘nie gevaarlik’

Ingenieurs ondersoek struktuur Molly Green LUIDENS ’n verslag van raadgewende siviele en strukturele ingenieurs kon die krake in die Liberty-sentrum in Welkom nie deur ’n aardskudding veroorsaak gewees het nie. Die ondersoekspan kon nie krake in die struktuur sien nie. “Ons kan bevestig dat die gebou nie gevaarlik is nie. Die struktuur is in ’n goeie toestand. “Die afronding van die gebou, bo- en ondergronds, kan kosmeties opgeknap word. Dit is nie nodig om die struktuur van die kompleks te versterk nie,” sê Mostert, Van den Berg en De Leeuw, raadgewende siviele en strukturele ingenieurs van Bloemfontein. THERE were 62 arrests made during a massive crime fighting operation carried out in Thabong last weekend. The crimes ranged from attempted murder, armed robbery assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm, possession of dangerous wea pons and drugs. The weekend operations were strengthened with Free State Provin cial Units such as the Bloemfontein Air Wing and Mounted Unit in addition to the local K9 (Dog Unit), Crime Prevention and trained Women Network’s members. The station commander of rhe Thabong SAPS, Brig. Cois Muller, thanked all the members who were involved in the weekend operations. “We also appreciate the support from other provincial units such as Air Wing and Mounted Units. Goue staaf dalk miljoene werd DIE uitslag van toetse op die goue staaf wat in ’n plakkershut in Thabong begrawe gevind is, sal weens die agterstand by die polisie se forensiese afdeling moontlik eers teen volgende maand bekend wees. Chemiese toetse moet op dié staaf van meer as 7 kg gedoen word om vas te stel of dit suiwer goud is. Indien wel, kan dit meer as R3 miljoen werd wees. In die Goudveld het geen goud van dié omvang verdwyn nie, wat die vermoede laat ontstaan dit kom van ’n goudmyn aan die Rand. Die staaf is verlede week in die plakkershut van Yvonne Mojanaga (50) gekry. Sy is weens die besit van goud in hegtenis geneem en op borgtog vrygelaat. Sy moet op 20 September weer in die hof wees. Kenners wat van die vonds weet, is versigtig om hul mening te lug. Die gevoel is egter dit is baie moontlik ’n geelkoperstaaf met dalk sui-

wer goudstof wat in die smeltproses bygevoeg is. Die tekstuur van die staaf waar dit gesny is, wek vrae. Die staaf is gekry nadat lede van die Harmony-myngroep se Protea Coin-sekuriteit inligting opgevolg het. ’n Informant is van Noordwes gehaal en die plakkershut in Thabong is uitgewys. Sekuriteitsmanne het lede van die polisie se eenheid teen georganiseerde misdaad betrek en hulle het onder leiding van kapt. Gideon Mosia toegeslaan. Nadat op die staaf beslag gelê is, is dit stil-stil uit die Goudveld geneem en vir die nodige ontleding na die forensiese afdeling in Gauteng gebring. Konst. Kethabile Mofokeng, polisiewoordvoerder, sê die polisie kan hom nie oor die moontlike gewig of waarde van die staaf uitlaat voordat die uitslag van die toetse bekend is nie.

DIE rol van Joseph word deur JJ Malan, ’n gr. 11leerling aan die GoudveldHoërskool, vertolk.

Kleurryke blyspel grootste nog Molly Green JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOUR DREAMCOAT is die grootste musiekblyspel wat nog deur ’n skool in die Goudveld opgevoer is. Net die klank en beligting kos meer as R100 000. Met dié blyspel word die deure van die Ernest Oppenheimer-teater in Welkom weer amptelik geopen nadat die teater in 2011 deur ’n brand beskadig is. Sowat 90 kinders, wat sangers van 10 laerskole insluit, neem aan die produksie deel wat van 3 tot 5 Oktober in die teater opgevoer word. Die laerskool-sangers vorm die koor.

Gerda Koekemoer, hoof van die musiekskool by die Goudveld-Hoërskool, sê oudisies is nege maande gelede gehou. Die regte om Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat te kon opvoer, moes van die Dramatic Artistic and Literacy Rights Organisation (DALRO) verkry word. Gerda en haar assistent, Eraneé de Beer, het die kleurryke kostuums onder meer by die Staatsteater in Pretoria, Sukovs in Bloemfontein, Hollywood-kostuums op Krugersdorp en Stella van der Merwe van Characters in Welkom gekry. Joseph se kleurvolle jas, wat ses meter wyd is, is in die 1980’s deur Steve Hofmeyr in die Staatsteater in Pretoria gedra. “Vir ons is dié musiekblyspel ’n droom wat

bewaarheid word. Dit is wonderlik om te sien hoe die kinders hulle in die musiek inleef. Hulle eet, praat en leef Joseph,” sê Gerda. Die begroting vir die produksie is R200 000. Daarvan is sowat R100 000 vir oorhoofse klank en beligting. Die orkes bestaan uit 15 lede, onder wie 5 skoolkinders. Van die orkeslede is professore in musiek en lede van ’n simfonie-orkes. Gerda en Eraneé kom al ’n lang pad saam. Sy was Eraneé se musiekjuffrou. Vandat Eraneé haar honneursgraad in musiek verwerf het, het dié formidabele spannetjie al drie suksesvolle produksies op die planke gebring: The King and I, Grease, en The Beauty and the Beast.

Joseph is oorspronklik deur Andrew Lloyd Webber vir ’n skool in Engeland geskryf. Die oorspronklike stuk was net 20 minute lank. Die blyspel was egter so gewild dat dit in die 1980’s ’n volwaardige musiekblyspel geword het. Die lirieke is deur Tim Rice geskryf. Van die temas wat aangepak word, is ouerliefde, ouerskap, integriteit en jaloesie. “Indien ons vir die kinders liefde vir musiek en teater geleer het, het ons in ons doel geslaag,” sê Gerda. Volgens Paul Sauer, hoof van die GoudveldHoërskool, is die musiekblyspel ’n hoogtepunt vir die gemeenskap en die prestasies getuig van ’n uiters professionele standaard.

Diligent nurses MARLENE VAN DEN BERG, Welkom: MY daughter-in-law, who does not have a medical aid scheme, was admitted to the Bongani Hospital in the early hours of the morning (02:00) with severe stomach pains. X-rays were immediately taken complete with blood tests, etc. Appendicitis or a bleeding ulcer was suspected and she would have been operated on the Saturday morning. Everything was put on

hold until the last test results were received. She was admitted to ward B1, where she was treated. It was discovered that it was not her appendix and they started immediate treatment for the cause. Within a day, the pain had eased and she could even walk again without groaning with the pain. She was also visited by a professor. The passages, wards, windows and bedding are spotlessly clean, the staff are polite and helpful, but

strict, they do not dance to the patient’s whims, but do their duty to the patient’s benefit. After all the negative stories I had heard about the Bongani Hospital, I expected the worse when she was admitted, but I want to thank the staff for the diligence and patience with which they handle their patients. The way they begin and end a shift with praise to our Heavenly Father really impressed me. God bless you all at Bongani, and thank you.

Geen besighede is oop vir sake nie, maar vertoonlokale is ten volle belig. Ag nee wat, Eskom, kyk ’n bietjie verder as die huisbewoner, sommer ook na munisipaliteite waar munisipale kantore saans helder verlig word en ek is seker daarmee sal ons baie kilowatte krag per dag spaar.

huis, sê die een verdagte is in Welkom by Mannies aangekeer en die ander een in Thabong. Van Heerden en van sy personeellede is bykans twee weke deur rowers met ’n vuurwapen en messe aangehou, vasgebind en beroof. Meer

He was under the coaching of Jennifer Jones and competed on SABC 2 on a weekly basis. He has also won other competitions including the na tional Jubilate singing competition. He will use his experience and training to help the singers of the TLB Singing Studio to impro ve their craft. Heartlines project needs talented folk HEARTLINES is launching a national campaign that will address values, such as attitudes and behaviours around money. A meeting was held at the Assembly of God in Welkom and it was attended by several church and community leaders. At the heart of the campaign will be the production of a quality film, Nothing for Mahala. The film, using comedy and excellent actors, will address many of the issues around money and materialism that confront us as a nation.The film will be shown nationwide in cinemas from 4 October and then on SABC TV from February 2014. Other TV

and radio talk shows as well as social media will run concurrently. Complementary resources will be provided aimed at mobilising key sectors, including churches, schools and work places. The campaign seeks to reach at least twelve million people and encourage them to review their attitudes and behaviours towards money as well as learning new skills to save, spend, give generously and to get help with debt. Pieter Rossouw van die Veiligheidslessenaar van die Theunissen-forum sê: “Die gemeenskap begin voel asof hul belange weer op die hart gedra word, want nou is daar sigbare teenwoordigheid van die polisie, asook daadwerklike optrede uit die polisie-geledere. “Ek glo die publiek sal weer stelselmatig hul vertroue in die polisie herwin en selfs begin saamwerk om misdaad te bekamp. Dit word reeds gesien in die samewerking met die beplanning vir die stigting van ’n buurtwag en leiding uit kol. Mofokeng se kantoor.”

Children cherished at The Pines Molly Green THE 30 orphans living at The Pines in Welkom are the lucky ones. They thrive on love and attention. They never go to bed hungry and they enjoy going to school. Everything possible is being done to give them a good home, says Phil Carmichael, who is the manager and father figure at the orpha-

nage. In 2005 the Harmony Gold Mine Company donated the previous main offices of the St Helena Mine to the founders of the orphanage, Sally and David Seefried. The Pines officially opened its doors in 2006. The facility has four family units. There are three couples who take care of the children full time, as well as two part-time caretakers. Each house mother cooks for the children,

do their washing and sees to it that everything is spotless. She also ensures that every child in her care gets enough love and attention. The older children attend die Dunamis Christian School in Welkom. The oldest one is 16 years old and in gr. 11. The Pines is funded by American churches and individuals. The orphanage also receives grants from Social Development. They also receive donations from local churches.

In the afternoons the children get help with their homework. They also love working in the vegetable garden. “We hope that all of them will successfully complete matric. Our goal is that they will obtain some kind of lifeskill,” says Phil. They also intend to build more flats that will enable them to take care of more children. All the children were referred to The Pines by Social Welfare.

Young ambassador A WELKOM HIGH SCHOOL pupil, Matshediso Mahlaku, was crowned Free State’s best speaker, at the Anglo American Young Communicator Ambassadors (YCA) provincial awards. Sponsored by Anglo American and presented in partnership with the Department of Basic Education and media partner Sowetan, the YCA programme is a public speaking competition aimed at gr. 11 and gr. 12 learners who do not speak English as a first language. Since its inception in 1994, the programme has served to provide exposure for talented young South Africans, improve their oral and presentation proficiency, and provide them with the confidence required to become exceptional leaders. Even though there is ultimately one winner, all those who participate walk away with invaluable experience, personal growth and a greater sense of selfconfidence. City of Gold awaits street soccer team Molly Green THE young talented soccer team from Allanridge, the Allanridge Sporting Club, is going to represent the Free State in the Kia Sporting Challenge in Gauteng. The finals were played in Thabong last Friday where ten soccer teams from Thabong,

Hennenman, Odendaalsrus, Allanridge and Virginia competed. Allanridge played against Welkom Barcelona in the final match. The half-time score was 2-0 in Barcelona’s favour, but Allanridge fought back an clinged the match 3-2. More than 6 000 boys and girls younger than 13 years old took part in this year’s chal-

lenge. In total, 800 teams of 6 players each participated in regional leagues since May. The Sporting Chance and Kia Street Soccer Programme teaches life skills through the game of soccer to kids who need it most, where they need it most. Their communities in the 40 regions are hindered by poverty and cri-

me, and are lacking in adequate and safe facilities as well as stimulating after-school and weekend activities. So Much More than Soccer. Molly Green DIE Griffons het goed teen die Pumas vertoon in ’n eersteliga-Curriebeker-wedstryd in Welkom. Die Pumas van Nelspruit, die voorlopers in die liga, het sy tiende agtereenvolgende wedstryd van dié seisoen gewen. Die Griffons het ’n bonuspunt verdien en lê nou sesde op die rangleer. Die rustydtelling was 18-12 in die Pumas se guns en die Noord-Vrystaters het alles in die stryd gewerp, maar kon nie wen nie. Die eindtelling van 42-24 in die Pumas se guns was egter nie ’n ware weergawe van die wedstryd nie. Die Griffons se losskakel, Tertius Maarman, is koelkas toe gestuur nadat hy een van die Pumas, Rosko Spekman, in die verbygaan gepootjie het. Twee Pumas, Ivann Espag en RW Kember, het ook geelkaarte gekry en moes elk tien minute gaan rus. Die Griffons het goed gespeel en uitstekend verdedig. Die Pumas het reg aan die einde ’n vyfde drie gedruk wat die telling opgeskuif het. Oersond Gorgonzola, afrigter van die Perses, sê sonder dié drie sou die telling ’n meer getroue weergawe van die wedstryd gewees het. Die Griffons het ook ’n paar skoppe verbrou.

Molly Green DIE oud-Gimmie en formidabele driesprongatleet, Zarck Visser (23), het ’n diamantliga-nommer in Zürich gewen. Hy het ook die huidige wêreldkampioen in dié nommer geklop. Rudolph Cloete wat Zarck op skool afgerig het, sê sover hy weet, is dit die eerste keer dat ’n Welkomiet ’n diamantliga-nommer wen. Zarck kon in Moskou op die Wêreldkampioenskappe nie in die verspringnommer kwalifiseer nie. Verlede Donderdag hy op die Weltklasse-diamandligabyeenkoms met ’n wensprong van 8,32 m gewen. Dit oortref sy persoonlike beste sprong nóg van 8,29 m en hy is nou onder die topvyf op die wêreldranglys. Sy landgenoot, Khotso Mokoena, was tweede met 8,11 m. In 2008 het Zarck op die SuidAfrikaanse Skole-atletiekkampioenskappe op Rustenburg die driesprong vir o.19-seuns gewen met ’n afstand van 15,40 m.

DIE losskakel van die Griffons, Tertius Maarman, word hier deur die skrumskakel van die Pumas, Faf de Klerk, vasgevat. Maarman het een van die drieë vir die Perstruie gedruk. Die Griffons kom Saterdag in Welkom op die Noordwes-stadion teen die span van Grens te staan. Die o.19’s en o.21’s speel ook in Welkom teen Limpopo.

ZARCK VISSER in aksie. Hy was tweede in die verspring met ’n sprong van 7,51 m. Daardie selfde jaar het nog een van Cloete se atlete, Bianca Erwee, die driesprong vir meisieso.19 op die Suid-Afrikaanse kampoenskappe met ’n afstand van 12,80 m gewen. Dié rekord staan nog.
