Wage issue to court Refilwe Mochoari EIGHTY-EIGHT (88) workers are suing the Matjhabeng Municipality over unpaid overtime, which could amount to R11 million. The security and emergency employees of the Matjhabeng Municipality are currently consulting with Thabo Grimbeek Attorneys in Kroonstad, who last week presented the municipality with a summons for a settlement on this matter. The workers say they have not been receiving their full overtime wages, which include working on Sundays and on public holidays, since August 2009. “Before August 2009, everything was good and we received our salaries with no battles. We used to get R3 800 for working five Sundays a month. But then our monies were cut to R800 for working five Sundays a month. “We were never told in advance that our overtime pay would be reduced. Nobody explained to us why this was happening. We have asked to speak to the municipal manager, German Ramathebane, several times but nobody took us seriously and we were sent from pillar to post. “We also tried to get the South African Workers Union involved, but we failed to get help. “We did not want this matter to end up with the lawyers or even in court, but because our managers at Matjhabeng did not take us seriously we had to take legal action. “Today many of us have finan-

cial problems. People’s cars and houses have since been repossessed. “Some of our colleagues even died of stress and depression because of the financial constraints we are facing. “Now the situation is even worse, because we are not considered to be important workers anymore. These days often only one firefighter will be put on duty. How is one person going to respond to an emergency? This will eventually affect the community. “We have even been getting threats from managers that we will never get higher positions in Matjhabeng nor should we bother applying when there are vacant positions because we’ll not be considered,” the workers said. These workers say they work 48 hours a week with an overtime scale of 0,5 times the normal hourly wage which can be up to R50. But according to the Department of Labour’s Basic Employment Act, workers should work 40 hours a week and employers must pay workers overtime at 1,5 times the normal hourly wage or alternatively pay time off in exchange for overtime as per agreement between the two. Kgojane Matutle, communication and media liaison officer of the Matjhabeng Local Municipality, said the municipality would be defending the matter in court. “We’ll be in court in the next eight days to defend this matter. This matter is sub judice and therefore we cannot comment at this stage,” said Kgojane.

Drie in skietery gewond TWEE Goudveldse polisiemanne wat op hul rusdag op die verkeerde tyd op die verkeerde plek was, is albei gewond toe rowers Vrydag helder oordag in die middestad op hulle losgebrand het. Een van die drie rowers is ook in die skietery gewond en hy en sy makkers is in hegtenis geneem toe hulle by die Virginia-hospitaal om hulp aangeklop het. Ao. Coen de Beer is vyf keer gewond en ao. Eddie Bosman een keer. Hulle is albei van die polisie se veediefstaleenheid. Die twee, wat albei hul dienspistole by hulle gehad het, maar in private klere geklee was, het teruggeskiet en een van die rowers gewond. Die drie rowers het in ’n silwer Corsa-bakkie sonder registrasienommers gevlug. Hulle het sonder geld gevlug,

maar het wel die dienspistool van een van die twee polisiebeamptes gebuit. Een van die rowers se pistool is op die toneel gekry. Die rowers het na verneem word, vermoed dat die twee saam met die voertuig is waarin die geld gebring word om bouwerkers te betaal. Die voorval was by ’n nuwe behuisingskompleks wat gebou word en waar die bouwerkers gereeld betaal word. De Beer en Bosman was afsonderlik in hul private voertuie daar en het net stilgehou toe die skote begin klap het. Die rowers is gistermiddag in hegtenis geneem toe hulle weens die een se skietwond by die Virginia-hospitaal opgedaag het. Die polisie het ná die skietery hospitale in die streek gevra om

vir ’n gewonde man op die uitkyk te wees. Die hospitaal het die polisie gebel. Kapt. Stephen Thakeng, polisiewoordvoerder, sê ’n interne ondersoek is reeds begin om vas te stel wat die twee polisiebeamptes op hul rusdae met hul dienspistole daar gedoen het. Hy sê met die aankoms van die twee polisiebeamptes op die bouperseel was die sekuriteitsbeampte reeds deur die rowers oorval en vasgebind. Hy is nie beseer nie. Bosman het ’n koeëlwond skrams teen sy kop opgedoen en De Beer is in die maag, boud en bene geskiet en sy een pinkie is vergruis. Hy is Vrydagmiddag geopereer. Hy is nog in die hospitaal se intensiewesorg-eenheid. Sy toestand is stabiel.

Matjhabeng: OG weerhou weer mening oor bestuur Molly Green VOLGENS finansiële state wat aan die stadsraad voorgelê is, is Matjhabeng se skuld aan Sedibeng-water bykans R600 miljoen. Daarby groei dié skuld maandeliks met R56 miljoen. “Met waterverliese wat reeds 60% per maand beloop, is dit nie verbasend nie. Asof dit nie genoeg is nie word R169 miljoen aan Eskom geskuld,” sê André Styger, DA-hoofsweep. Die ouditeur-generaal (OG) het weer sy mening oor die Matjhabeng-stadsraad se finansiële bestuur weerhou. Sedert die munisipaliteit 12 jaar gelede tot stand gekom het, kon dit nog nooit ’n skoon oudit kry nie. In ’n verslag wat verlede week aan die stadsraad voorgelê is, beskryf die OG die toestand van die munisipaliteit se finansiële bestuur as iets wat veel te wense oorlaat. Die verslag wys op skreiende oortredings en tekortkominge wat insluit: ) gebruik van verkeerde tariewe vir die berekening van munisipale tekeninge; ) ongesubstansieerde oortydbetalings aan amptenare van R37 miljoen; ) vrugtelose vermorsing van R76 miljoen; ) ongemagtigde uitbetalings van meer as R1 miljard; en ) kontrakte wat toegeken word aan verskaffers wat deur die regering verbied is om sake met openbare instansies te doen. Die OG het die raad daarop gewys dat die poste van senior bestuurders wat deur waarnemende amptenare gevul word een van die grootste oorsake is. Die OG het ook daarop gewys dat die munisipale bestuurder, German Ramatabane, en sy bestuurspan ’n gebrek aan toewyding toon om tekortkominge te pak wat in vorige verslae uitgewys is. Opposisiepartye het op die vergadering deurlopend gevra dat die munisipale bestuurder se gebrek aan leierskap en sy onvermoë om die munisipaliteit te bestuur ondersoek moet word. Dit is egter uitgestel totdat sy assessering in terme van sy dienskontrak deur die burgemeester gedoen word. ’n Kontrak wat volgens die OG se verslag nie bestaan nie. Styger sê die OG-verslag kom nie as ’n verrassing nie. “Wat wel onverklaarbaar is, is die volge-

houe weiering van die burgemeester en sy komitee om voet dwars te sit, die munisipale bestuurder tot verantwoording te roep en die probleme aan te pak. “Die onrus in Phomolong en ander gebiede is maar net die begin van wat die ANC-beheerde raad in die gesig staar wanneer die munisipaliteit se feitlik onafwendbare finansiële ineenstorting inwoners op voetsoolvlak gaan raak op ’n skaal wat tot dusver ondenkbaar was. “Vir solank kiesers nie die ANC verantwoordelik hou nie sal daar geen motivering vir hulle wees om hul amptenare tot verantwoording te roep nie.” Styger sê die gesegde ’n vis vrot van sy kop af vind hier toepassing. Die OG het in sy verslag gesê met ongemagtigde uitgawes van meer as ’n miljard rand, onreëlmatige uitgawes van meer as R160 miljoen en vrugtelose uitgawes van meer as R76 miljoen loop die Matjhabeng-munisipaliteit die gevaar om heeltemal ten gronde te gaan. Luidens die OG-verslag is die bedrag van bykans R1,5 miljard vir inwoners se verbruikerskuld ook ’n probleem. Verkeerde tariewe is vir diensterekeninge gebruik en groot berekeningsfoute is dus gemaak. In die verslag word ongerymdhede, administratiewe flaters en onbevoegdheid uitgewys. Die munisipale bestuurder en die senior bestuurders het nie hul prestasiekontrakte onderteken soos deur munisipale wetgewing vereis word nie. Die OG kon ook nie die werkkontrak van die munisipale bestuurder opspoor nie en daar kon nie vasgestel word of dit, soos deur wetgewing bepaal, ’n kontrak vir vyf jaar is nie. Verskeie aanstellings is gedoen waarvoor die organogram nie voorsiening maak nie. Die poste van senior bestuurders en die finansiële hoof is reeds meer as twee jaar vakant. Amptenare is in waarnemende poste aangestel. Die daaglikse bestuurstaak word hierdeur geraak en daar is nie aanspreeklikheid in die munisipaliteit nie. Die bevindings van ’n ouditkomitee wat deur die munisipaliteit aangestel en deur Lemmy Mule gelei is, stem met die bevindings van die OG ooreen.

Exchange in letters now closed THE editor’s response to the communication by Kgojane Matutle, communication and media liaison officer of the Office of the Executive Mayor of Matjhabeng Local Municipality: AS you requested I have published your letter unchanged. You quote yourself as the communications and media liaison officer of the Office of the Executive Mayor of Matjhabeng Local Municipality. It is common knowledge that

government communication officers represent their political principals, in this case the executive mayor of Matjhabeng, Sebenzile Ngangelizwe. Vista therefore understands that the content of your letter has been blessed by the executive mayor. Are we therefore to accept that this letter is the mayor’s voice? Mr Matutle must understand that Piet Botha wrote his letter in his personal capacity as a private citizen of Matjhabeng, not as the DA.

Botha stated this clearly in his letter. Mr Matutle has been answering and fighting back behind the facade of the very public Office of the Executive Mayor. Mr Matutle as a public person, is defaming and fighting a private person through the perceived priviledge allowed by his, Matutle’s, public office (the executive mayor’s spokseperson). Vista considers this issue closed, and no further correspondence will be entered into regarding this matter.

AS a qualified journalist and news editor, I was taught both at the Allenby Campus and Rhodes University that we must always remain on the fence no matter what. Our role is to be objective all the time. What happened last week was very unusual and unexpected. The editor chose not to publish my full response to Piet Botha’s personal attack on me having afforded his letter more space and a screamer of a headline. Our seasoned editor claimed that Vista did not publish personal attacks on individuals and therefore my letter was not only edited but shortened. Perhaps I must quote from Botha’s letter: “Mr Matutle must get out of his office and luxury car to see what Matjhabeng looks like. His ANC spectacles have blinded him from seeing the reality. Mr Matutle must stop blaming apartheid after 18 years and acknowledge that the ANC-led government has failed.” The following is what was considered as a personal attack against Botha and was edited out: ) It is an undisputed fact that cannot be denied in any way by a right-thinking person that the legacy of apartheid will be with us for decades to come. I don’t expect Honourable Piet Botha to appreciate that fact, for obvious reasons. ) The ANC-led government has achieved a lot since taking over in 1994 and to expect them to overhaul what was destroyed for over 300 years is not only fair but cynical. ) It is imperative for Honourable Piet Botha to know that I was born and bred in Meloding, Virginia. I know exactly what lack of service delivery is, having experienced it for the better part of my life. I wouldn’t want to go further to describe the state of our roads, recreational facilities and street lights. They did not exist. ) I want to invite Honourable Councillor Botha to ride with me

in my “luxury car” when I do my weekly environmental scanning to see that Welkom is not the worst in the country. I also want to lend him my “ANC spectacles” to see the CBD clearly. Lastly, I am pleased with the efforts of our workers to carry out Operation Coca in order to keep our towns and townships clean. South Africa continues to suffer from a lack of social cohesion and the establishment of common agenda by people across racial lines. This national problem has divided our nation into two groups. Some of the previously advantaged have become vocally fierce critics of every sphere of government and they remain blind to any form of progress being realised by the ANC-led government. In their dinner-table discussions, they remain oblivious to the many challenges that are very different in nature and magnitude from those that used to face their governments. Let us remind these people that part of our monumental task is to undo the legacy of many decades of unjust laws and unequal delivery of services. As municipalities, we are faced with ageing and obsolete infrastructure and yet when we are faced with challenges on a daily basis, these people are quick to go nostalgic and speak about the good old days. What good old days when many of the people were treated badly and did not have rights. While we have embraced the spirit of reconciliation as introduced by the first democratic president of the Republic of South Africa, Nelson Mandela, we are growing tired of the mentality of “them and us” as practised by some South Africans. They must make their minds up if they are South Africans or former colonial masters who are suffering an acute case of nostalgia for the days of wielding the whip. We are all in this together.

Man caught with cloned cards during ATM operation THE Welkom Commercial Crime Unit arrested a man who had in his possession 31 cloned bank cards and a large amount of currency. He appeared in the Welkom Magistrate’s Court for bail application

and was granted R10 000 bail. On 26 January members of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation held an operation under the leadership of Lt Col Dimakatso Tsupa whereby ATMs were

visited around the Northern Free State. During the operation one African male, who looked very nervous, was noticed next to one of the ATMs in Welkom. He was approached and sear-

ched, the following items were found in his possession: 31 suspected cloned cards and a lot of bank notes. He was arrested and detained at the Welkom SAPS. A 37-year-old man was charged

Help Cansa raise funds with relay

Woman reduces hunger with her vegetable garden MARTHA MAGADLELA from Virginia encourages members of the community to plant vegetables in their gardens. Magadlela has planted all sort of fruits and vegetables to relieve the financial strain of having to buy vegetables daily. In her garden, Magadlela has mielies, spinach, tomatoes, potatoes, pumpkin, beans, peppers and onion. She says the reason why she started a home garden was to help reduce hunger and poverty in the community.

“I would like to motivate all community members to plant vegetables and start home gardens. “We have to start planting food in our gardens. “By having a home garden I am able to feed all my children and not a single day will they go to sleep on an empty stomach. “The garden can also help financially, because you can even start a business by selling the vegetables,” she explains.

THE Relay for Life is an overnight event where Cansa celebrates with survivors and remembers those who lost their battle to cancer. It is also a fundraiser to help Cansa with research, to educate the community on early detection and support families affected by cancer. This year’s relay will take place on 9 March at the Griffons Rugby Stadium (North-West Stadium). The event takes place from Saturday evening until Sunday morning. A team comprises 10 to 15 members, with a team captain who walk the track for 12 hours. Teams are given a designated area where they can camp for the night. Teams may brand the camp site and bring along a gazebo, sleeping bags, camping chairs and so on. “You can choose a team name and dress according to a theme as well,” says Tania McKay, staff partner, Relay for Life. “Each team must have a positive cancer message and this must be visible at your camp.” The registration fee is R500 and teams are asked to do fundraising as well. “We have given teams targets of R3 000 or more. Fundraising must

start as soon as possible so that you don’t have to worry too much weeks before the relay. Companies that sponsor their team funds can be issued with an 18A tax relief certificate. On the night of the relay each team must have a stall where you can sell food/beverages or anything else, this is to keep teams sustained and active during the relay. The funds made here are the cherry on top of your fundraising. It is important to confirm your stall in advance so that we don’t have duplicating teams. If you sell anything, you first cover your costs and then the rest gets donated to Cansa,” she says. There will be trophies awarded to the team with the most spirit, the best slogan and the team that generates the most funds. On registration, teams will receive ten luminaria (celebrate and remember) bags that can be handed out to family or friends who have lost someone to cancer or have a family member undergoing treatment. These bags are then decorated

with the loved one’s name and the bags must be back at Cansa by 1 March. These bags will have a candle that is lit during the luminaria ceremony and light the track. The programme will be conducted as follows: 15:00: team arrival and set up. 18:00: Opening Ceremony – short welcome to all and the survivors. This will be followed by the survivors’ lap and the caregivers’ lap. The teams are then introduced and all do a lap. This will be followed by the luminaria ceremony and the lighting of the candles, the Hope sign will then be lit. There will be one member per team on the track at all times. The evening’s entertainment will include live entertainment throughout the night to keep the teams on the go. The event will be closed with a fight-back ceremony, and the closing ceremony on 10 March at 05:30. “Once you have your team together, please contact me to register your team,” says McKay. Valentine’s Evening in Bronville A VALENTINE’S EVENING, Fire & Ice, will be held on 16 February at 19:00 in the Bronville Community Hall. The evening is based on the premise of changing the negative perception everyone has of Bronville, says Lucien Lazaar, a community member of the Klein Begin Society (KBS). “Recently, this very community was troubled with issues of drugs that is becoming a serious health

risk, and not so long ago, the terrifying events which emanated from gang violence which had every resident on alert. This clearly overshadowed the good our community really holds,” says Lazaar. “This is why we (the KBS) thought of bringing something new, something that everybody is longing for and which caters for most adult groups, a Valentine’s Evening. “It surely doesn’t end there.

“We’ll be having 80’s music and old school, R & B, disco as well as karaoke (a first) and lucky draws for the night, including a cash bar. “Provision will be made for extra police presence to ease the fear of those who still feel a little insecure.” The tickets are limited and cost R50. Sibusiso Langa (44) ploughed into a group of joggers with his luxury car in Midrand, Johannesburg, on a Saturday morning, leaving five joggers dead on the scene and one critically injured. They were training in preparation for the upcoming Soweto Marathon. Moroese Mokoatsi (23) and Nomvula Dumako (22), two of the victims, originated from Thabong and were working in Gauteng. The two were buried in Welkom last year. The others were Reneiloe Lesenyeho, Given Mills and Khanyiswa Tlale.

They usually started training from Midrand, where they left their cars, and went for a jog every morning. On Saturdays they used to do 30 km starting at 05:30. On the R562 intersection, a silver Mercedes-Benz ML500 crashed into them from behind. Sibusiso Langa was so drunk that he did not even realise what he had done that morning, according to witnesses. Sibusiso is facing five charges of murder, one of attempted murder and drunken driving. He is out on bail and will appear in court soon. Stander, an Olympic cyclist, had been on a solo 100 km training ride from Port Shepstone to Port Edward and back

when the accident happened. Stander won the u.23 UCI World Cup in 2009. In 2010, he clocked in third in the Mountain Bike World Championship in Canada and he was tipped to take gold at the Rio Olympics in 2014. Stander was buried in Cape Town. In 2011, rising cyclist Carla Swart (18) died when a truck struck her. Njabulo Nyawoze (24), a taxi driver, was charged with culpable homicide. He will appear in court on 22 March. Such deaths are bad for our country and the Department of Roads and Transport must take precautionary measures to protect joggers and cyclists, commented numerous Thabong residents.

Awareness on the marking of electrical appliances IT has come to the attention of the Virginia police that when stolen electrical appliances are recovered community members cannot positively identify them. The Virginia police are appealing to people to mark all electric appliances of record and the serial numbers where applicable.

Ecology made fun THE gr. 8 learners and the Eco Club of St Andrew’s School Welkom attended a workshop on Ecology at the Willem Pretorius Game Reserve. They learned about water ecology, water parasites, and the role of fish in the ecology of the Allemanskraal Dam. Leon Barkhuizen (a specialist on ecology and fish from Bloemfontein) took the children fishing and supervised a fish dissection which was enjoyed by all the pupils. St Andrew’s stresses learner involvement in environmental campaigns and is the only school in the Free State to have been awarded the International Eco Flag.

BUSINESS EXECUTIVE, Matjhabeng: THEY think they shine on top, but they stink from the bottom. With the ruling party the rot has set in deeply at the Matjhabeng Municipality. According to the Constitution all citizens have the right to improvement and a life of quality. To uphold the fundamental rights, various state institutions were established. These are, among others, the Public Protector, Human Rights Commission, Electorial Commission, Commission for Gender Equality and the Auditor General (AG). The ultimate fundamental right is the power of decision making vested in all citizens of South Africa. We determine our own destiny. We must hold our executive accountable. The AG’s report was tabled to council on 29 January. The content is devastating. The institution has sunk, never to be rescued ever again. The AG report paints a picture of a “free for all mentality” in the financially troubled municipality. The AG was unable to obtain appropriate audit evidence for the following: 1. Property plant and equipment of R4 456 966 678. 2. Consumer debtors of R1 493 489 369. 3. Non current consumer debtors of R23 057 044. 4. Leave pay accumulated of R19 141 020. 5. Retention money paid out on contract of R19 141 020. 6. No proof on lease agreements paid out of R7 073 268. 7. No evidence on overtime paid out of R37 367 346. 8. Paid payments to non VAT registered suppliers of R5 591 115. 9. Unauthorized expenditure of R1 075 758 597. 10. Fruitless and wasteful expenditure of R76 391 793. 11. Irregularity expenditure of R160 377 149. This amounts to a staggering total of R7 374 354 399. Seven billion three hundred and seventy four million three hundred and fifty four thousand three hundred and ninety nine rand. The report further dealt with 79 paragraphs of non compliance and various transgressions of the law under the supervision of the municipal manager. According to law, after being submitted to the council, this report must be available on the Matjhabeng website. All members of the public have a right to obtain a copy of the report. The report mentions how contracts were awarded to service providers who are listed on the national treasury’s data base as persons prohibited from doing business with the public sector. The municipal officials continue to disregard compliance with laws and regulations resulting in consistent increases in irregularities and fruitless and wasteful expenditure. Every paragraph highlights the non performance of the municipal manager and the financial officer. All of this happened under the supervision of the mayor of Matjhabeng. When the report was tabled in council, the ruling party was dead silent. Some members of the ruling party were even of the opinion that it is small mistakes. This financial mess is equal to 122 905 low cost houses at R60 000 per house. If Matjhabeng was a privately listed company, the mayor, the municipal manager and the financial officer would all have been fired. They would have been held responsible and criminal charges implemented against them. Why do we as Matjhabeng citizens have to further pay any money to such a rotten institution? As long as these people stay in office, we will always suffer.

Neglect of health issues a concern MOETI MOLELEKOA, Thabong: A GOOD soccer coach will teach his players that in order not to concede goals, you must frustrate your opponent in the mid-field – interrupt the supply to their forwards so as to starve them. In contrast, here in Thabong, rats and mice are running around as if there is a cheese factory in the neighbourhood. To give credit where it is due, the Matjhabeng Municipality authorities are doing their best to clean the area. They are being assisted by the Extended Public Works Progamme’s (EPWP) workers. The municipality has even provided each and every household with a rubbish bin for the collection of the garbage. These containers have a capacity of about 250 litres, they have lids and they must have cost the municipality an estimated R1,5 million for Thabong households only. Signs that warn against dumping have been erected at strategic areas, but are ignored by persistent dumpers. However, the only mistake that the authorities made was to not have a monitoring system for rubbish bins. These bins are being abused by residents. Some still use plastic refuse bags and the bins are spared to brew Umqombothi (Bantu beer) during their traditional feasts. The municipality should have registered occupants’ details next to each container delivered so that they could be held accountable for any loss or damage. Currently, there is no monitoring system in place. The other thing working to our disadvantage is that after pruning their trees, residents keep the branches and grapevines to make fire for funerals and traditional banquets in future. Now, this begs the question: Where are the health inspectors? I last saw the health inspector before 27 April 1994. Just like the school inspectors they’ve gone with the wind. Health inspectors did not only monitor filth, but also screened spoilt food in cafes, shops and super-markets. Those scavenging at the dumping site will attest to this. Pre-1994, they used to get food of which the best before date was due or had just expired. But today, such food is consumed by paying customers. If you enter some shops selling fruit and vegetables in the CBD, you retreat due to a stench. Some hawkers even sell unrefrigerated meat and tripe at taxi ranks and street corners at will. Where are the so called environmental officers?

Seminar helps entrepreneurs THE Black Management Forum’s (BMF) Young Professionals (YP) Welkom will hold an information sharing session on How to kick-start your business. This is the focus topic, because according to the announcement of the findings of Census 2011 by Statistics SA, the Free State has the highest unemployment rate in the country (32%). The BMF YP is a socio-economic youth endeavour of the BMF which targets young professionals to assist them in their development as entrepreneurs and managers. Membership is made up of individuals below the age of 35. “Our vision is to be the most influential programme for young professionals and entrepreneurs in South Africa. We aspire to develop and produce young corporates and entrepreneurs with the necessary skills required to become accomplished business and transformational leaders. The ultimate goal is not only to deliver a pool of talent to the South African market, but also to create innovative opportunities to exercise the talent,” says Amanda Ntseao of the BMF. SAPS commended for job well done THE best performers amongst the members of the Thabong SAPS were awarded trophies for their outstanding work. The awards were presented to them at a morning parade. Brig. Cois Muller, station commander of the Thabong SAPS, conveyed the message from management to all the members of the Support Services, the Crime Prevention Unit, the Community Service Centre (CSC) and Detective Services that management had decided to award these members. Police spokesperson Malebo Kgosana said the trophy for support services was received jointly by data typist Eva Kwanya and Henk van Staden. They both work at the human resource management office.

Their outstanding performance had a vital impact on the Thabong station’s performance. The Crime Prevention Unit trophy was awarded to Const. Zekhethile Mbena. According to his commander, Lt Col Moleleki Matsabu, he is a dedicated member who made the most arrests in the period October to December. Sgt Charlet Jansen was nominated as the best detective of the quarter. Her commander, Capt. Jeanette Ncheche, said that Jansen has investigated all her dockets amicably, arrested most of the suspects and sent dockets to court where most of the suspects were convicted. The last trophy was awarded to the CSC D shift. Lt Col Motarafi Nte-

pe, the CSC commander, cited a couple of reasons for nominating this shift out of the four shifts. She mentioned that there was a synergy in the shift in terms of ensuring service delivery. Muller commended all the members for their performance. He told the members that what they did last quarter, should be carried over to this quarter and the new financial year which starts in April. “What these members have done is commendable and needs to be emulated by all of us for the sake of service delivery. I do not have a doubt in my mind that we are all capable of doing this job well to make Thabong a safe place for all law abiding citizens,” concluded Muller.

This year the Goldfields Hospice celebrates its 25th birthday. “Simply put, if it wasn’t for faithful supporters like them, we wouldn’t exist. These donations contribute to the funds that we need to make a difference in the lives of people dying from life-threatening disease,” says Marthe-Lee Els, hospice fundraiser. THE Goldfields Hospice’s charity shop sells the public’s donations and the funds raised are used to provide care to 344 patients in the Goldfields and surrounding area. KEFILOE KOAHO, a gr. 5 learner at the Seabo Primary School in Thabong, won a school uniform worth R1 700 from the Shoprite Dream Big competition. Learners from across the country were invited to enter a competition at their local Shoprite by writing a short essay or drawing a picture about what they would like to be once they have finished school. In her essay Kefiloe said she wants to be a police officer in order for her to eliminate crime and also for her parents to be proud of her one day. Committee works hard THE committee of the South African National Blood Service’s branch in Welkom explains its purpose: There are branch committees in each zone. These committees are vital in recruitment and retention strategies for the active donor base and will be supported by the operational structures, operate in areas appropriate for market penetration and donor activities, provide the source of zone donor committee membership and assist in the transformation initiatives of the SANBS. The SANBS Welkom held their

first meeting on 28 January to discuss 2013 projects and activities. The committee is actively involved in most projects that are carried out by the SANBS. The two highlights of involvement are the annual Jail Bleed Out and the annual business bleeds at Mediclinic Welkom in November to help ensure sustainable blood over the festive season. The annual business bleed date for this year is 28 November. People who wish to join the Welkom SANBS committee can call the branch on 057-352-2174.

FOUR LEGGEDFRIENDS IN NEED

THE Virginia SPCA has beautiful dogs and cats up for adoption. Attached in the photograph are just a few of the orphans looking for loving homes. There are lovely books at low prices. The next sale will be on 2 March at the old Checkers Centre. THERE are many dogs and cats, puppies and kittens available for adoption from the Welkom SPCA. They all have wonderful personalities. “If you have lost your pet, please come to the shelter in Alma Road. Our kennels are full and we are in need of food for dogs and cats. We are feeding many dogs at the moment and the consumption of food is between 80 kg to 100 kg of dog pellets per day. We are requesting help from the public. Cat food is also in big demand,” says Margaret Lauder of the Welkom SPCA. Lauder says the SPCA also requests the public to book kennel space now if they are going away for the Easter weekend. Moeti Molelekoa WHEN down-to-earth Israel Maiketso Motlhabani scattered the first seeds of grain on his own land in 1996 after buying the Annasvlei farm (568 ha) at an auction in Wesselsbron, he could not know that he would be crowned Grain South Africa Farmer of the Year for 2012. “After writing matric in 1987, I joined the South African Post Office (SAPO) as a counter clerk. While working there, I started developing an interest in business. I then started in the long-distance taxi business and bought my own vehicle. I also established a construction company and a funeral parlour,” said Motlhabane. “I sold all those businesses. After selling them, I registered a company called IM Mothlabane Farming and joined the Tutuwa Business Partnership with 249 other farmers. We were bestowed black ownership participation rights to farming. This is a Standard Bank investment project for emerging farmers,” he explained. “I grew up on a farm near Wesselsbron where my father was a worker. This was where I developed a passion for farming. The first break towards my dream came in 1996 when I bought Annasvlei at an auction. In 2008 I leased Uitkyk (328 ha) in the neighbourhood and added one more farm to my collection. I started small, planting sunflower with various degrees of success and added white and yellow maize to up my profit margins. I also farm with cattle,” he pointed out. Mothlabane has won prizes and awards from Grain South Africa and Green South Africa. These awards are held by 29 farmers from all regions in nine provinces. I fall under the developing farmers category and not the commercial farmers category. The adjudicators evaluate cleanliness, the amount of grain sold and the health of your cattle. Late last year I

CRAFTERS MARKET/KUNSMARK

Market keeps on growing Marti Will THE Welkom Crafters Market first saw the light of day on 3 November 2012 and had 12 stalls. On 1 December 2012, the market rained out and only ten crafters pitched up to display their goods. On Saturday, 2 February, the third Crafters Market was held and a record-breaking 29 crafters came to the open field behind Etienne Motors to display their goods. The Crafters Market is diarised to be held the first Saturday of every month. Only handmade goods will be allowed at this market. The next market will be held on 2 March.

Rider excells nationally YOLANDÉ MATTHEE, a gr. 11 learner at the St Andrew’s School Welkom, performed excellently during the 2012 junior national equestrian championships. In the junior intermediate equitation category, Yolande achieved first place – she is the South African individual champion. She was also part of the Free State team who won the team competition. Yolande also came fourth in South-Africa in the 1,10 m show-jumping, where the Free State team came second in the team competition. She was also ranked sixth

in the country in the 1,20 m show-jumping. Her brother Kobus Matthee, a gr. 9 learner at St Andrew’s, also did the Goldfields proud. He took eighth place in the junior intermediate equitation (individual) category and was part of the Free State team who won the team competition. Imogen Pretorius, another learner at St Andrew’s, was part of the Free State team who came second in the 1,0 m show-jumping category.

Goals against gangsterism THE Offenders Festive Season Soccer Tournament that took place at the Virginia Correctional Centre was a success. The main aim of the tournament was to motivate offenders to participate in sports and recreation to keep them busy during the festive season. Mokhali Mokhali, sports coordinator at the Virginia Correctional Centre, said: “We were trying to keep them away from gangsterism. “The tournament consisted of six teams namely the

Welkom Stars, Meloding Football Club, Caprivi Footbal Club, Africa United, Pulamadibuho Football Club and Manchester United. “The winning teams received a soccer kit, gold medal for the team that won the tournament, silver medal for the runner-up, a trophy for man of the match, goalkeeper of the tournament and the top goal scorer.” The finals took place on 9 January and the Meloding Footbal Club won 2-0 against Welkom Stars. Mokhali said he was very impressed with the manner in which offenders

behaved during the tournament. “We never experience fighting amongst offenders during the tournament and even during training so this means engaging in sports has limited the the gang fights and misbehaviour of the offenders. “It is important that the offenders take part in sports – this keeps them from becoming involved in gangsterism. We want them to behave in order for us to organise soccer teams from the community to come and play against us here at the correctional facility.”

Mieliemarathon weer ’n reuse-sukses DIE naweek van 19 Januarie het bykans 418 atlete in koel, bewolkte weer deelgeneem aan 10 km-, 21 km- en 42 km-afstande tydens die 35ste Mieliemarathon wat deur Goudveld-Multisport aangebied is. Die Hoër Tegniese Skool Welkom se sportterrein was weer die wegspringpunt. Ondernemings in die Goudveld het nie op hulle laat wag nie en het aangebied om waterpunte te beman. AEL Mining Services het as hoofborg opgetree. Sy waterpunt is ook as die beste waterpunt van die dag aangewys. State Auto Diesel het die 35ste keer ’n waterpunt beman wat werklik noemenswaardig is. Die Thuso-meule het hul deel gedoen deur 250 kg mieliemeel te skenk wat aan die atlete uitgedeel is. Elke beampte, verkeersbeamptes en selfs die bestuurders van die begeleidingsvoertuie (deur Chubb voorsien) het die wedloop saam met die publiek terdeë geniet. 10 km: Thabang Masihleho van die SUT in 30:36 en Dolores Bondis van Eskom in 42:14 (vroueafdeling). 21 km: Samuel Segoaba van Transnet in 1:08:20,

Paul Thipane van Goldfields in 1:09:04 en Thabo Mokhatla van Harmony in 1:10:45 (derde).
