Refilwe Mochoari THE unemployment phenomenon is going to increase in the Goldfields as about 3 000 mineworkers will be left jobless due to another possible mine closure in the area. The management of the Sibanye Gold Mine, formerly known as Oryx, between Welkom and Theunissen last week served the trade union Solidarity with a section 189 notice which deals with the termination of employment contracts. The termination is due to a fire that broke out in the mine on 19 February, leaving a loss of R28 million per month. David Sipunzi, secretary of the National Union for Mineworkers (NUM) in the Free State, said the Welkom branch held a meeting with Sibanye Gold yesterday afternoon. “I cannot say anything at the moment because we are going to hold our first meeting as a branch about this problem today at 14:00,” he said. However Lesiba Seshoka, national spokesperson for the NUM, said the termination of 3 000 workers who are mostly breadwinners in the communities is totally disappointing and devastating. “We are very disappointed in Sibanye Gold for taking this drastic step because it is the responsibility of the management to ensure that the mine is often maintained to prevent incidents such as a fire breaking underground. “The retrenchments are going to affect the Goldfields community negatively because there are people who rely on the income of these workers.With that said, we as the NUM feel Sibanye is using its strategies in an attempt to retrench workers. This step has been long overdue, they are using the fire as an excuse and as a result are not living with the promise by Goldfields when it announced that no jobs would be lost because of change of ownership,” he said.

LINET COETZER se liefde vir katte kom van kleintyd af. Haar eerste kat was ’n gewone straatkat, maar vir haar het dit nie saak gemaak nie. Nou spog sy met waarskynlik die grootste telery van persiese katte in die land. Sy het ook van die meeste ingevoerde katte in haar kattedom. Van die katte is van Israel en Frankryk ingevoer en bly letterlik in katpaleise. Linet teel met 43 katte en elkeen het ’n naam. Sy probeer om name vir die katte te kry wat by hulle pas. Sy neem gereeld aan skoue deel en het al verskeie Suid-Afrikaanse kampioene opgelewer. Die 11 konings (mannetjies) het elkeen ’n tuinhuisie (Wendy-huis) waar hy die septer swaai. Dié menere mag nie met die ander manne meng nie omdat hulle dalk aan’t baklei kan raak. Hulle word bedags een-een uitgelaat om die lushof van ’n tuin te bewandel en met die wyfies te gesels. Elke kathuisie het infrarooiligte vir hitte en waaiers om die manne in die somer koel te hou. Hulle het ook hul eie bedjies. Linet teel al sowat 25 jaar met persiese katte. “In 1987 het ek ’n advertensie in Die Burger gesien van ’n vrou wat ’n surrogaatma vir haar twee persiese baba-katte gesoek het. Die ma is kort ná die geboorte dood. “My kat het die twee katjies aangeneem en versorg. “Die vrou het toe vir my een van die kleintjies gegee.”

Sy het Chicka laat registreer en dáár het die telery begin. Linet het ook ’n spesiale babakamer waar die ma’s en hul werpsels versorg word. Daar is genoeg speelgoed om die kleintjies besig te hou. Sy koop elke vyf weke 400 kg van ’n spesiale vleismengsel op Olifantsfontein. Die katte eet net uit bakke van vleklose staal en kry ook spesiale aanvullings. Sy verkoop nie katte sommer aan enigiemand nie. “My kliënte word gekeur, want dit kos ’n mens gemiddeld sowat R400 per maand om ’n persiese kat te versorg en te voer.” Sy wil seker maak die nuwe eienaar sal in staat wees om ordentlik vir die katte te sorg. Die klein katjies word elke twee weke gebad en die groot katte so elke twee maande. “Hul haartipes verskil en sommige moet meer gereeld gebad word.” Om die katte te borsel is tweede natuur by Linet. Al haar meubels is katbestand – van hout en staal. Linet, ’n kerngeneeskundige, was in haar jonger jare ’n karateka van formaat. Sowat 20 jaar gelede, toe sy nog in die Kaap gebly het, het ’n naak inbreker een nag voor haar bed gestaan. Sy het hom behoorlik gewys waar Dawid die wortels gegrawe het. Electricity cutoff averted EVYN THORNE, president of the Matjhabeng Ratepayers Association: THE Matjhabeng Ratepayers Association is proud to inform the public that the electricity cut-off of the Matjhabeng Municipality has been averted. A written undertaking has been received from Eskom suspending the electricity cut-off. This was made possible by the countless hours spent in discussions by the executive members of the Ratepayers Association, the Business Chamber and executives of Matjhabeng and Eskom. An agreement has been finalised and all parties involved were happy with the outcome of the payment settlement. The Matjhabeng Municipality owes Eskom R145 million. Though we are pleased with the Eskom settlement, we are just wondering why so many electrici-

ty and water meters in the Matjhabeng area are faulty? Reporting faulty meters seems to fall on deaf ears when reported to the City Engineers Department. Some time back, the Ratepayers Association reported and questioned the extent of resources budgeted for repairs and maintenance in Matjhabeng and no one has so far, in the past two months, bothered to inform the consumer public or the RPA. The municipal manager in his wisdom has advertised the post of Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and it is hoped that the candidates will be well screened and their ability tested before appointing him or her to assist the suffering finance department.

Sufficient underlings and competent and bright persons are needed to support the current officials who, we understand and realise, are under huge pressure to perform in a sea of chaos. Incompetence is a deep systemic challenge that is draining away our council’s ability to create the future we dream of and the belief that we’ll ever get there. The Matjhabeng and Lejweleputswa Economic Development Departments are overwhelmed by projects competing for funding and as residents and ratepayers we appeal to the relevant managers, directors and councillors to get totally absorbed for the benefit of the community or realise they’re not up to the challenge and throw in the towel. Let someone else with vision, leadership and vigour take up the challenge to make Matjhabeng great. While we support the mayor’s

2030 vision we also realise that great achievements start with tiny steps. Tidy up our townships and neighbourhoods. Get our sewerage right. Get our water systems right. Get discipline back into the public service. And insist on good service from each and every business that you support in Matjhabeng. Then, and only then, will the investment that we all pray for come knocking and breaking our doors down to be part of this great Matjhabeng. Uiteindelik het ek hulp gekry en die man wat my gehelp het, het gesê dat dit my reg is om in Afrikaans gehelp word. Ek is in Suid-Afrika gebore en ek verstaan die meerderheid praat Engels, maar ek voel daar behoort op elke skof iemand te wees wat die mense wat net Afrikaans kan praat, sal help.

EK het op 3 April die oggend die Welkom-polisiekantoor aangedoen om twee verklarings af te lê en die ry het tot by die ingangsdeur gestaan. Ek het nie kans gesien om in die lang ry te staan nie en het dus omgedraai en geloop. Ek is aangesê dat ek om 18:00 moet kom, dan is die ry nie so lank nie. Ek het ’n rugprobleem en kan dus nie so lank in ’n ry staan nie. Ek is ’n pensioentrekker en is 68 jaar oud. Om 17:45 was ek terug daar, maar om 18:10 het niemand probeer om my te help nie. Daar was twee polisiebeamptes wat mense se verklarings afgeneem het. Ongeveer ses personeellede het op en af agter die toonbank geloop en toe ek om 18:15 opstaan en

oppas. Verder wonder ek of nie meer ongelukke gebeur het nadat die verkeersligte in gebruik geneem is as voor die tyd nie. Ons moet verstaan die Welkomiete is gewoond aan sirkels. Hoewel sekere motoriste ook nie ’n sirkel se reëls verstaan nie. Hoe moeilik kan dit wees om ’n verkeerslig te verstaan? Rooi beteken stop, groen beteken ry. Ons het dit vroeg al geleer. Het ons nie almal nie? Rooi beteken stop totdat die lig groen word. Nie stop en as die ander voertuig ’n entjie weg is, mag ek maar ry nie. Of het die padreëls intussen verander?

‘Live by ubuntu in SA’ CONCERNED CITIZEN, Welkom: THE Easter weekend has come and gone once again leaving some families grieving as they lost their loved ones in accidents over the long weekend. The preliminary figures which were released on Monday indicate that 250 000 cars were stopped and 79 056 fines were issued, (one wonders how many were bribes) and 241 people died over long weekend, which is more than last year. I feel disgusted and ashamed having to ask what happened to ubuntu in our country. The word comes from Zulu. The Oxford Dictionary meaning of ubuntu is “the idea that people are not only individuals but live in a community and must share things and care for each other”. I feel everyone should have this in their diaries to remind them they live in a community. My fiancé and I were unfortunate to be involved in an accident between Ventersburg and Senekal during the Easter weekend. It was caused by a truck driver who decided to head straight towards us. For what? Only God knows. To my dismay the coward didn’t even stop to find out if we were alright. At that point we were trying to get out of the car as we were terrified it might explode. Luckily no one was hurt but we could not go anywhere as the car was badly damaged. The only cellphone signal we had was in certain areas and it was minimal as well so we could not make phone calls. During that time two traffic vehicles passed and they could see we needed help, but they did not stop. Thank goodness there was a fullmoon that night. At that moment I ask myself two questions: Should we always have some change in our wallets to receive help? Do those traffic cops feel good about themselves asking people for bribes when helping people in need? In the fight to stop crime and corruption in our country, we should also fight to have selfless citizens who put the needs of others before theirs, just like the people who were involved in the Sharpeville Massacre fighting for the human rights that we have today. They lived by the true meaning of ubuntu. We are not perfect but working together I believe we can make a difference.

Rapist (24) from Kutluanong sentenced for life A 24-YEAR-OLD man has been sentenced for life in prison for the rape of a 56-yearold woman from Kutluanong in October 2011. The suspect gained access to the house through a window.

The victim was assaulted and raped at knifepoint. He also stole her jewellery. The woman was able to identify the rapist as a man she knows and who lived in a street near where she lives.

Thabang Sefatsa was found guilty as charged by the Welkom Regional Court. “I believe this case has brought confidence in the public about the Odendaalsrus SAPS members as they did not hesitate to arrest the suspect.

My appreciation also goes to the investigator who ensured that tests were conducted that linked the suspect with the crime. I am very proud of you, keep up the good work,” says the provincial commissioner in the Free State, Lt.Gen. Khehla Sitole.

Gala byt op 34 steeds vas Molly Green

’n LEGENDARIESE saalperd en eertydse Suid-Afrikaanse kampioen, Gala, is nou 34 jaar oud. Hy is een van die oudste perde in die land en dra sy jare goed. Sy eienaar, die bekende Goudveldse perdeman Fourie Cronjé, sê dié perd, wat soos ’n kind vir hom is, eet nog goed. Hy drink baie water en kan nog self opstaan. “Hy sien nog so effens met sy een oog en ly so effens aan rumatiek. “Wanneer hy soggens opstaan, moet hy eers vorentoe en agtertoe wieg, maar dan kom hy orent.” Gala se groot maat is Painted Wings, ook ’n bekende saalperd. “Die twee is baie lief vir mekaar en wanneer Gala hom nie gewaar nie, roep hy na hom.”

Fourie sê Gala geniet dit as hy geborsel word. “Wanneer dit baie warm is, word hy afgespons. Dit is iets wat hy ook baie geniet.” Gala se ma is kort ná sy geboorte dood. Hoe hy oorleef het, weet niemand nie. Hy was ontwater en het verskeie dae by die dooie merrie gestaan. Dié vulletjie is egter met liefde, melk en eiers gehelp om te oorleef en hy het ’n legende in sy eie tyd geword. Hy was almal se gunsteling. Gala se 30ste verjaardag is meer as vier jaar gelede met ’n vleisbraaiery gevier. Net sowat 50 uitverkore gaste, asook sy staljoggies, is genooi. Die geselligheid was net vir mense wie se paaie met Gala s’n gekruis het. Dié partytjie was baie spesiaal en selfs groot mans het ’n knop in die keel gekry toe Gala met ’n blommekleed die arena binnegelei is. Hy het ewe fier en trots sy bes gedoen. Die hoogtepunt van sy loopbaan was toe hy op die Jeugskou in Bloemfontein die Suid-Afrikaanse vyfgang-kinderkampioenskap gewen het. Fourie sê klein Gala is almal se liefling. “Seker omdat hy hans grootgemaak is en dink hy is ’n mens. Die polisie ondersoek bewerings dat Pierre Vorster (46) glo sy huishulp, Amelia Makoko (24), gekry het om die moord te laat pleeg. R20 000 was glo ter sprake. Combrink is Teixeira se verloofde. Sy en Vorster is vyf jaar gelede geskei. Die ander beskuldigdes is Mahlomola Dhladhla (25), Tsietsie Mara (25), Mosoatsi Tsemane (23) en Elvis Nkhabu (24). Hulle almal is van Meloding by Virginia. Teixeira, ’n Welkomse sakeman, is in die vroeë oggendure van 14 Maart uit Combrink se huis in Naudéville in Welkom ontvoer. Combrink is vasgebind, maar het haar losgewoel en die polisie ontbied nadat die mans daar weg is. Geld is daarna by kitsbanke uit hul albei se bankrekenings onttrek. ’n Uitgebreide soektog deur die familie se soekspan en die polisie wat daarna gevolg het, het niks opgelewer nie. Women charged with theft Refilwe Mochoari TWO women, Zinhle Make (28) and Xoliswa Lobese (32), are in custody for stolen clothes worth more than R18 000. The women, who are believed to be from the Eastern Cape, were arrested during the weekend and appeared in the Welkom Magistrate’s Court on Monday on charges of theft of the stolen clothes. The case has been postponed to 15 April for a bail application. Stephen Thakeng, the police spokesperson, said the two were found selling clothes in Mooi Street in Welkom but failed to produce receipts of where they bought the clothes when the police instructed them to do so. “Members of the Tekkie Squad from the Welkom police received a tip-off about a white vehicle with a Gauteng number

plate which was used to steal clothes from different business premises in Welkom. “The police also discovered that the two were using a hired Toyota Corolla which was also confiscated with the clothes. “In the vehicle we found an identity document of a man who resides in New Brighton. “Upon a request to open the boot of the vehicle, clothes and self-made handbags that were apparently used to steal from clothing shops were also confiscated,” said Thakeng.

Boijane laid to rest

WILLIAM BOIJANE (27) from Masilo in Theunissen was one of the six soldiers who died in the Central African Republic (CAR) and who was buried over the weekend. The well-attended funeral service was held at the Masilo community hall. Amongst the attendees were the Free State acting speaker, Ouma Tsopo, Lejweleputswa district mayor, Mathabo Leeto, and officials of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF). The service was opened with a prayer and followed by military procedures by the SANDF. The funeral programme consisted of two parts, the first part included speeches from family and friends and the second part included a service by military officials. Leeto highlighted at the funeral service that Boijane was a true soldier who died for his country. Boijane joined the defence force in 2008 and wanted to become a paratrooper, where he became a rifleman. The troopers were informed on 31 December last year to report for duty on 1 January this year. The SANDF representatives said while the soldiers were at the CAR, they were heavily outnumbered, but managed to fight the rebels who were about 3 000 and managed to kill more than 600 of the rebels. Boijane was described as an asset to the country. The Boijane family thanked the community, the municipality and the SANDF for their comforting words and assistance with the funeral. Boijane died serving the country leaving a wife and a young child.

SAPS holds career day

DURING the Easter holidays the South African Police Services (SAPS) embarked on a career exhibition. More than 40 gr. 10 learners of the Lebogang, Teto, Lephola, Thotagauta, Nanabolela, Leseding, Letsete and Lekgarietse Secondary School attended the exhibition in full school uniform to listen attentively about the different careers within the SAPS. Members of the community policing forum (CPF), junior chairperson of the CPF, the junior station commander and his deputy also honoured the event with their presence. With more than 50 careers within the SAPS the learners were taken step by step by the SAPS career centre through the different procedures and qualifications needed for entry level in this organisation. Mamello Machoane, police spokesperson, said learners received pamphlets on the different career paths that entail the job description and proper guidance in what one needs to study at higher training institutions. “The learners were motivated and moved by the wise words of the deputy chief of youth section in the Department of Education, George Sethunya Fothoane, who told learners that once they lose focus on a dream, it will be gone,” she said. Col. Moleleki Matshabu also encouraged the learners to join the SAPS once they have matriculated or have completed their studies.

Plaaslike kunstenaars stig groep VIER plaaslike Goudveldse kunstenaars het onlangs besluit om met sangbediening in die Goudveld en omgewing te begin en só hul besonderse sangtalent tot eer van God te gebruik. Die groep se naam, Di Est Amo, is Frans en van die frase God is liefde afgelei. “Hulle het besluit om met hul Godgegewe sangtalent mense te bedien wat ’n diepe behoefte het om hul liefde vir God deur musiek uit te leef. Deur hul optredes wil hulle God ook prys en dank vir die talente en geleenthede wat hulle ontvang het en teruggee aan die gemeenskap in dade van naasteliefde,” sê Anina Hattingh, die groep se woordvoerder. Met elke projek of optrede word ander sangers van die Goudveld genooi om saam met hulle in die ondervinding te deel en die gemeenskap te bedien. “Met hul eerste projek het hulle ’n dankseggingsdiens met sang in die NG Moedergemeente op Riebeeckstad gelei waartydens verskeie artikels, asook geld, ten bate van die Agape-sentrum vir Verstandelik Gestremdes op Winburg geskenk is. Die artikels is op ’n heerlike lentedagkonsert aan hulle oorhandig. “Die groep het die Agape-inwoners ook in Desember verlede jaar met ’n Kersboom verras,” sê Ani-

na. Met hul tweede projek het die groep ’n sak vol sagte speelgoed by die Morning Star-dagsorgsentrum, vir kinders wat deur MIV en vigs geraak word, uitgedeel. “Die opregte dankbaarheid op elke kind se gesiggie het almal se hart geraak,” sê Anina. Die groep se huidige projek, Hoor my Lied, is ’n vertoning wat saamgestel is uit bekende Afrikaanse liedjies in die eerste helfte en ’n pragtige tweede helfte bestaande uit liedere uit die bekendste Andrew Lloyd Webber-musiekblyspele. Vir die optrede het hulle ses bykomende talentvolle sangers genooi om saam met hulle in die ervaring te deel. Die eerste kleedrepetisie was op 2 Maart waarop hulle ’n staande toejuiging ontvang het. Die eintlike skouspel, Hoor my Lied, word op 19 April om 19:00 in die NG kerk Welkom-Wes in Welkom aangebied. “Dit gaan alle verwagtinge oortref en almal word genooi om dit saam met ons te kom geniet,” sê Anina. Skryf jou vir BSV-wedstryd in DIE landwye skryfwedstryd van die Bloemfonteinse Skrywersvereniging (BSV), in samewerking met die Nasionale Afrikaanse Letterkunde-museum en Navorsingsentrum (Naln), spog reeds sedert 1979 met ’n ongeëwenaarde prestasie van die ontdekking en slyp van nuwe, onontdekte stemme in die skrywerswêreld. Volgens Corlietha Swart, voorsitter van die BSV en dosent verbonde aan die Universiteit van die Vrystaat (UV), lewer die wedstryd jaarliks nuwe, onontdekte skrywerstemme op wat kort voor lank debuteer. Om hierdie rede tree die fakulteit geesteswetenskappe van die UV vanjaar die vierde jaar as borg van dié skryfwedstryd op en prof. Lucius Botes, dekaan van die fakulteit geesteswetenskappe van die UV, het vanjaar weer ’n hele R15 000-prysgeld uitgeloof. Vroeëre BSV-skolewenners wat later bekende skrywers geword het, sluit in die kinderboekskrywers Jaco Jacobs, Fanie Viljoen en Carina Diedericks-Hugo, die digter Carina Stander en Sonja Loots wat verlede jaar vir Sirkusboere vereer is. Onlangse wenners wat gedebuteer

het, of ’n groot werk gelewer het kort nadat hulle die skryfwedstryd gewen en die BSV-slypskool bygewoon het, sluit in Piet Steyn, wat kort daarna ontwikkel het in ’n formidabele rillerskrywer, Dirk Winterbach, wat kort nadat hy gewen het op 76 gedebuteer het, dr. Hannes Haasbroek (sy boek oor Fischer het kort daarna opslae gemaak) en Japie Bogaards wat gewen en toe gedebuteer het. Veral skoolgroepe en tersiêre studente word aangemoedig om in groot getalle deel te neem aan hierdie tradisieryke skryfwedstryd met ’n heerlike verskeidenheid kortprosa- en poësie-onderwerpe. Ook vir Afrikaanse niemoedertaaldeelnemers is daar aanmoedigingspryse en ’n slypskoolbeurs op die spel. Genres waaraan skole en volwassenes kan deelneem, is: kortverhale, kortkortverhale, sketse/vertellings, essays en gedigte. Skole kan deelneem in poësie en kortprosa vir juniors (gr. 8 en gr. 9) en seniors (gr. 10 tot gr. 12). Volwassenes kan deelneem in twee kategorieë, naamlik skrywers wat al voorheen teen vergoeding gepubliseer het of skrywers wat nog nooit kreatiewe skryfwerk teen

vergoeding gelewer het nie. Skryfwedstrydwenners kom in aanmerking vir prysgeld, trofeë en sertifikate. Verder woon alle wenners, ook diegene wat eervol vermeld is, die BSVslypskool vir ontluikende skrywers gratis by. Hierdie geleentheid word vanjaar op Saterdag 24 Augustus deur die welbekende filmresensent, dosent en rillerskrywer prof. Leon van Nierop in die Naln-ouditorium in Bloemfontein aangebied. Boonop word die skryfwedstrydwenners se weninskrywings jaarliks in die BSV-publikasie, Inkvars, geplaas. MUSIEKSTUDENTE op junior vlak word genooi om hulle in te skryf vir die toonaangewende SAMRO Hubert van der Spuy- Nasionale Musiekkompetisie. Dié projek, nou in sy derde jaar, bou voort op die stewige grondslag wat die Suid-Afrikaanse Vereniging van Musiekonderwysers (SAVMO) 25 jaar gelede gevestig het toe ontluikende jong musici die eerste keer op nasionale vlak hul slag kon wys. Sedert vier jaar gelede stel ’n spesiale aansporingsprojek vir ontwikkelingsgroepe uit benadeelde

gemeenskappe hierdie kandidate in staat om op gelyke vlak met deelnemers van ander gemeenskappe mee te ding. Die sluitingsdatum vir vanjaar se kompetisie is op Vrydag 19 April. Oudisies sal aan die begin van Junie in die hoofsentra afgelê word. Sowat 60 gekeurdes sal dan van 16 tot 28 September oor vier rondes in die Hugo Lambrechts-ouditorium in Parow, Kaapstad, meeding. Medaljes en prysgeld van meer as R80 000 en verskeie ander pryse is op die spel. Daar is vier kategorieë: klavier,

strykers, hout- en koperblasers en ander instrumente (slaginstrumente, blokfluit, klassieke kitaar en harp) met ’n onderafdeling vir ontwikkelingsgroepe. NOVA 2013, the national short story competition run by Science Fiction/Fantasy South Africa (SFFSA), is now open for the submission of entries, with prizes valued at R3 500 up for grabs. Entries in the general section of Nova 2013 this year will be judged by Lauren Beukes, the winner of the 2011 Arthur C. Clark award and the 2010 Kitschies Red Tentacle for her novel, Zoo City. The South African section will be judged by Arthur Goldstuck, the author of 15 published books ranging from South African urban le-

gends to Information and Communications Technology. SFFSA has been running this annual competition since 1972. The aim of the competition is to promote local talent and counts international author Dave Freer amongst its previous winners. The competition opens each year in April and closes on 30 September. This year, six prizes to the total value of R3 500 will be awarded. The competition is open to amateur and professional writers alike, but must be the original, unpublished work of the author and must be in English in the

Kerk hou fietstrap vir Bybels DIE Hervormde kerk Goudveld, in samewerking met die Bybelgenootskap van Suid-Afrika, Welkom Square en Virgin Active, bied ’n 80 uur-fietstrapfees vir die 80 jaar van die Afrikaanse Bybel aan. Dié fees word op 12 en 13 April by die Welkom Square gehou. “Die doel van die projek is om te kyk hoeveel Bybels (koste van ’n Bybel) die gemeenskap van die Goudveld kan insamel met die oog op verspreiding van Bybels in Suid-Afrika. “Ons wil Goudvelders uitdaag om so lank moontlik te trap en om so geld vir die verspreiding van Bybels in te samel. “Vir elke halfuur wat jy trap, skenk jy ’n Bybel met jou inskryfgeld,” sê Lydia McIntyre, skakelpersoon van die fietstrapfees. All eyes on SA over salt THE Heart and Stroke Foundation South Africa welcomed the announcement that the health minister had signed legislation to make salt reduction in the food industry mandatory on 18 March. “This is wonderful news and the Heart and Stroke Foundation would like to congratulate the minister of Health, Aaron Motsoaledi, on taking this important step helping South Africans to reduce salt in their diet,” says Dr Vash Mungal-Singh, CEO of the Heart and Stroke Foundation SA. “Other countries have introduced salt reduction on a voluntary basis and not always successfully. South Africa may achieve salt reduction targets quicker compared to other countries where salt legislation is not mandatory and the world will be watching us to see if our approach works,” she said. Motsoaledi on many occasions stated his intention to regulate the food industry in terms of permitted salt content to help lower blood pressure amongst the population and thereby save lives. South Africans have one of the highest rates of hypertension worldwide. An estimated 6,3 million people are believed to be living with high blood pressure in South Africa, making them more susceptible to life-threatening diseases like stroke and heart disease. Statistics show that there are about 130 heart attacks and 240 strokes daily in South Africa. That means that 10 people will suffer a stroke and five people will have a heart attack every hour. The World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends that adults eat less than 5 g of salt (a teaspoon) a day. The Heart and Stroke Foundation says a staggering 80% of cardiovascular diseases could be prevented through modified behaviour – like reducing salt. The organisation last week launched a new lobby group called Salt Watch, formed to educate South Africans on the dangers of high salt consumption. The group will complement the work done at government level. “The problem is that up to 60% of this salt is hidden in products and consumed by people probably unaware of the high salt content in their food,” says Mungal-Singh. Studies have shown that South African bread is among the saltiest in the world. Mungal-Singh says that fortunately many role players in the food industry are supportive of the new legislation and have already begun implementing salt reduction strategies in food manufacturing. “Legislation alone is not going to lower salt consumption in the country and improve health. This is going to be a collaborative effort of government, the food industry and organisations such as the Heart and Stroke Foundation. And the people of South Africa also have a role to play. People have to start choosing products with lower salt and to use less salt at the table and when cooking.”

Wildsfees se marathon terug DIE jaarlikse Wildsfees-marathon is terug onder die vaandel van Goudveld-multisport. Dit vind Saterdag by die Willem Pretorius-wildreservaat buite Ventersburg plaas. Die afstande wat aangebied word, is 42,2 km en 10 km. Die 42 km begin om 06:00 en die 10 km om 06:30. Inskrywings kos R65 vir die marathon en R30 vir die 10 km.

Tournament aimed at uplifting offenders THE Virginia Correctional Services held an Easter Offenders Soccer Tournament from 29 March to 1 April. The main aim of this tournament was to motivate offenders to participate in sport and to expose their talent in sport. This is one of the activities that keep them busy and from

smuggling and engaging themselves in gangsterism and other related matters. The tournament consisted of six teams of offenders of the Virginia Correctional Services: Meloding, Welkom Stars, Phulamadibuho, Africa United, Caprivi and Manchester United Football Club.

All the teams participated in the tournament and only two could make it to the finals. They were Welkom Stars and the Caprivi Football Club. The winning team was awarded a trophy, gold medals and a brand-new soccer kit. The runners-up also received new soccer kit.

Excels in swimming CULLEN THOMAS, a local swimming star, participated in the South African le vel 3 national cham pionships in Durban recently. He won four gold, two silver and one bronze me dal. Cullen qualified for 11 finals and he obtained medals for: first in 50 m backstroke, 100 m backstroke, 200 m backstroke and 100 m freestyle. He came second in 50 m butterfly and 200 m freestyle, and third in the 200 m individual medley. These are also his rankings in South Africa in his age group. During this championships Cul len also broke six Northern Free State re cords. Cullen is a gr. 7 learner of the St Hele na Primary School and his coaches are Ar thur du Toit and Clinton Thomas.

LOLI KUHN of the Rovers Bowling Club is the winner of the Goldfields senior women’s singles that took pla ce on 8 April.

Good results for Teniel at SA championships TENIEL O’HARA, a gr. 10 learner of the St Dominic’s College in Welkom, was selected as a member of the Free State/Northern Cape equestrian A team in 2012. As part of the team she took part in the South African junior championships in December. Out of 100 riders in each class she achieved excellent results. On her horse, Welsh Brass, she obtained 21st, 20th, 18th and 10th place in show jumping and 11th place in intermediate equitation. Her team obtained an overall second place in these events and an overall first place in equitation. Riding Song Sung Blue she obtained a 16th place in show jumping.
