THE Federation of International Art Photography (FIAP) hosts a photographic youth competition every two years.

This year eight Jewell Photoschool students have been selected to represent South Africa.

In 2011 four authors from Jewell Photo school each received an acceptance. Over 60 countries compete worldwide in this prestigious event. The South African judges selected the images to represent SA. There were a number selected from Johannesburg and Pretoria schools.

In the 16 ro 21 age group five authors were accepted. VIR Lafras Fritz (18), wat in ’n motorfietsongeluk die gebruik van sy bene verloor het, was dit ’n naelbyt-ervaring toe hy op die kortlys was om as hoofseun van die Goudveld-Hoërskool aangewys te word.

“Ek het gehoop, maar ek het ook gestress. Nou is ek dankbaar dié eer het my te beurt geva.

“Om hoofseun vir 2014 te wees is vir my ’n uitdaging en daarby saam kom verantwoordelikheid.”

Dié gewilde Goutie is in Augustus 2010 ernstig in ’n motorfietsongeluk op die Phakisa-renbaan tussen Welkom en Odendaalsrus beseer. Sy lewe was weke lank in gevaar. Maar hy het herstel en hy glo, as hy regtig wil, kan hy enigiets vermag. Hy was vyf jaar oud toe hy aan veldfietsrenne begin deelneem het.

In 2003 was hy die Noord-Vrystaatse kam- pioen. Wat dié hoofseunskap nog lekkerder maak, is sy meisie, Saschke van der Merwe, is die nuwe hoofmeisie.

Paul Sauer, hoof van die GoudveldHoërskool, sê Lafras is baie gewild by die kinders. “Hy het ’n sterk persoonlikheid en is ’n gebore leier. Wat hom

spesiaal maak, is hy verkies om dinge self te doen, maar hy is bewus van sy tekortkominge. ’n Mens beskou hom nie as gestremd nie.”

Lafras het ook al as seremoniemeester by die skool opgetree. Aanpassings is by die skool gemaak sodat hy makliker oor die weg kan kom.

Dié seun van Lafras en Chantelle Fritz het vroeër vanjaar op die Nedbank- nasionale kampioenskapsby-

eenkoms vir gestremde atlete in Pretoria twee goue medaljes in die handfietsafdeling (o.20) verower. Hy het die 6 km-tydtoets én die 27 km-wedren gewen. Hy is ook in April vanjaar as Mnr. Goutie aangewys.

Lafras sê hy is ernstig oor sy akademie. Sy sterkste vak is tegniese tekeninge en hy wil ná matriek siviele ingenieurswese aan die Universiteit van Stellenbosch (US) gaan studeer.

’n WELKOMSE pionier en bekende onderwys- en sportman, Bill Hayett (81) is ná ’n operasie op Secunda dood. Hy het die Goudveld aan die begin van die jaar ná meer as 50 jaar verlaat om by sy dogter, Esmé Visser, te gaan bly.

Esmé sê haar pa het verlede Maandag ’n heupvervangingoperasie gehad. Alles het goed gegaan totdat hy Donderdag ’n bloedklont in die long gekry het. Hy is Vrydag oorlede.

Oom Bill, soos hy alombekend gestaan het, het 50 jaar gelede aan Welkom-Gimnasium begin skoolhou.

Hy het biologie aangebied.

Toe sy vrou, Gerda, wat hy ontmoet het toe hy sewe jaar oud was, later siek geword het, het hy twee jaar aan die St. Andrew-skool in Bloemfontein gaan skoolhou sodat sy naby hospitale kon wees. Ná twee jaar was hulle terug in Welkom.

Hy het die onderhoof van die Welkom High School geword en van 1970 tot 1991 was hy die hoof van die Laerskool Aurora.

Hy was een van die bekendste tennisafrigters in die streek en het verskeie Vrystaat-kampioene opgelewer. Desireé Grobler was in 1976 die Vrystaatse nommereen-speler en Sharon McCullagh in 1982 die nommertwee-speler toe Amanda Coetzer

Hy het tot onlangs nog tennisspelers afgerig en ses van sy Aurora-spelers was in 2012 in die Vrystaat-span. Hy was onder meer voorsitter van Noord-Vrystaat Netbal en ’n Suid-Afrikaanse netbalskeidsregter én -keurder. Hy was ook voorsitter van die Nuffieldskolekrieketvereniging.

Hy word oorleef deur sy twee dogters, Esmé en Eleanor van Rooyen van Stilbaai, asook drie klein- en drie agterkleinkinders.

Esmé sê dit was haar pa se wens dat die troosdiens in Welkom gehou moet word. Die diens is Vrydag om 11:30 in die NG kerk Welkom-Wes.

As ’n staatspensioentrekker wil ek graag vir my en my gestremde dogter ’n ekstra inkomste verseker.

Ek is genoodsaak om die brief vir die Goudvelders te skryf. Ek woon my lewe lank al in Welkom. Ek het ’n naaimasjien nodig om mee te werk vir ’n ekstra inkomste. Ek wil babaspeelgoed maak sodat ek dit op die vlooimark kan verkoop.

As daar iemand in die Goudveld is wat vir my ’n gebruikte masjien kan skenk, sal ek baie dankbaar wees.

Ligte brand steeds nie AT EDWARDS, Welkom: EINDE Mei het ek ’n skrywe aan Vista gerig waarin ek gekla het oor die ligte wat nie by ons kerk in Odendaalsrus brand nie.

Dit is nou twee en ’n half maande later en raai wat, hulle brand steeds nie. Ek sien dat al die straatligte in Van der Vyverstraat op Odendaalsrus dag en nag brand.

Bravo vir die mense wat daaraan moet werk.

Ek sien ook dat al die geel ligte, wat dit vir besoekers makliker moet maak om in die aande deur Welkom te ry, vervang word met wit/blou ligte. Ek wonder of daar iemand is wie se “maatjie” die ligte teen ’n “goeie prys” aan hulle voorsien het, of is daar iets waarvan ons nie weet nie? In die meeste van die groot stede word die hoofweë so aangedui.

AND DISAPPOINWelkom:

AFTER having lived in Welkom for 20 years plus and working with the public, I returned “home” after being away for a few years.

My reason being that Welkom’s people are “special”. Old friends more precious than our gold! At my late age I still work with the public and love the friendliness and warmth experienced each day.

But alas! Customer service in general in Welkom is not on standard.

To those who are fortunate enough to have a job, please appreciate it. You make us feel as if you are doing us a favour to serve the public. After all, we are the ones who pay your salaries, either from buying from you or through our taxes. To the managers and supervisors; please educate your staff on customer service.

My visits to the Provincial Traffic Department have always been a “low.” Your greeting is ignored and you do not receive information on what to do next.

My visit to this department on 4 September was a disaster. People standing in rows, with only one person behind the seven to eight counters. No one at the information counter. The three people standing in front of me had been standing there for three hours already. What I heard was that most of the staff had been at a meeting for some three hours already, they were on strike or planning to strike.

For heaven’s sake; why were there no notices put up to warn the public?

On their return at about 11:00, there was no hurry to man the counters.

We as consumers also have our rights. On returning home I phoned the offices and asked to speak to their supervisor. After a few calls, I was still put through to “nowhere” and “no one”! I then phoned the Bloemfontein Head Office Traffic Department of the Free State. I was given so many numbers, but nobody could help me.

If you cannot get answers from service providers then you run to the press. Thank you, Vista, for your newspaper, I do enjoy reading it.

Music a disturbance

NAME WITHHELD, Odendaalsrus:

WHAT has happened to quiet, relaxing weekends in Odendaalsrus?

In Van der Vyver Street there is a jazz club, and I am assuming that the constant racket is from that tavern.

Although every weekend music can be heard, it was more a background noise, but steadily the music level has increased, and these past few weeks have been a nightmare.

Saturday past was psychological warfare.

The tavern is located at the end of Van Der Vyver Street, towards the bridge (going to the hospital). We are four streets away, near the other end, towards the Pick and Pay circle, and the music was so loud that it sounded

as if it was right in our house.

Despite numerous calls to the police, the level of music went ever louder until way past midnight, and only then dropped a few notches, but could still be heard until 06:30 on Sunday.

Only to begin again at 13:00. The “techno beat” starts on a Friday and ends late on a Sunday evening and it sounds like the same recording is played continuously.

It is such a shame that the owners of the tavern think not a thought of everyone else that surrounds them.

But my question is: Why did the police not do anything?

Especially as the rest of Odendaalsrus needs to endure this week after week. Is breaking the law by disturbance of the peace only applicable to SOME people?

MARTIN HORN, Welkom: I have been living in Doorn near Peter Pan Park for the past 25 years and what is happening there is breaking my heart.

The park has literally become a dumping zone and residents from as far as Lini Street, Congo Street and William Street come to Cactus Street to dump their litter. Even the people who live adjacent to the park throw their rubbish over the pre­con walls that separate their homes from the park. I have lived in Welkom itself for 27 years, and I can honestly say that Welkom is now the dirtiest town in the entire country. Everywhere one looks one sees rubbish dumped on pavements. Welkom is a rubbish tip. Nothing is cleaned up anymore. There are no dirtbins in the CBD, the rubbish is just strewn around on the roads and pavements. I suggest that all entrances to Peter Pan Park are blocked off with razor wire and that a massive warning board is put up threatening people with a hefty fine if they illegally dump there. A fine of about R10 000 should do the trick.

’n MAN en vrou wat hulle as eiendomsagente voordoen, het in Riebeeckstad toegeslaan en ’n huiseienaar besteel.

Die polisie waarsku inwoners om versigtig te wees en om veral hul huiswerkers teen dié skelms te waarsku. Die twee skelms, ’n man (tussen 35 en 40 jaar) en ’n vrou (tussen 30 en 35 jaar), het by ’n huis in die woonbuurt Rie-

beeckstad aangekom. Hulle het hulle as eiendomsagente aan die huiswerker voorgestel en gesê hulle is deur die huiseienaar gestuur om na die huis te kyk, omdat dit verkoop gaan word. Hulle het saam met die huiswerker deur

die huis geloop en terwyl een van hulle haar aandag afgetrek het, het die ander een na hartelus gesteel. Hulle het onder meer ’n skootrekenaar, kamera en juwele gebuit.

Die verdagte man is sowat 1,7 m lank, skraal

gebou en praat Sotho. Hy was geklee in ’n pienk hemp, wit langbroek en swart leerskoene. Sy kop is kaalgeskeer. Die vrou is sowat 1,6 m lank, oorgewig en praat ook Sotho. Man beleef straatlewe Molly Green DIT was baie koud en hy was honger. Sy beursie met R29,10 is gesteel en daarmee saam sy pensioen- en identiteitskaart.

Hy kon nie sy pensioen trek nie en hy het sy kamer verloor, omdat hy nie die huur kon betaal nie.

Die eerste keer het Choppy Hughes (64) geweet hoe dit voel om ’n man van die straat, ’n boemelaar, te wees. Hy het nie eens ’n kombers gehad om hom warm te hou nie.

Soms, wanneer dit baie koud was, is hy toegelaat om by die polisiekantoor op Virginia op ’n bankie te slaap.

“Ek was mismoedig. Ek was vuil. Ek het elke oomblik daarvan gehaat. Ek het geen heenkome gehad nie.”

Hy het, wanneer die nood baie hoog was, uit asblikke geëet en sigarette van stompies gedraai.

“Die moeilikste was om te bedel. Dit was só vernederend.”

Saans het ek nie geweet of ek maar in ’n boom moes klim om te slaap nie.

“Dit sou dalk veiliger wees.”

Een aand het hy by ’n tafeltjie buite ’n restaurant op die dorp gesit. ’n Groepie straatkinders het na hom toe gekom en gevra of hy iets het om te eet.

“Ek het ontkennend geantwoord.

“Die seuns is daar weg en het ’n rukkie later vir my kos en rookgoed gebring.

“Toe hulle hoor ek het nie slaapplek nie, het hulle gesê hulle sal vir my ’n bed maak.”

Die seuns het kartonhouers platgeslaan en ’n bed gemaak deur lae karton en koerantpapier opmekaar te stapel.

“Ek het daardie nag lekker warm geslaap.”

Later het hy met drie haweloses vriende gemaak.

“Hulle het ’n plekkie gehad waar ons veilig kon slaap. Soms het ons lepel gelê om warm te kon bly.”

Een van hulle saag nou doringbome af en verkoop die hout. Hy kan nou kop bo water hou.

Choppy sê hy soek werk. Sonder ’n identiteitsdokument is dit moeilik. Twee maande se pensioen moet ook nog aan hom betaal word.

Hy het nie nou die geld vir foto’s en ’n nuwe ID-boek nie, maar hy probeer spaar.

Hy was jare gelede ’n timmerman op die ou President Steyn-goudmyn by Welkom.

Hy het ook by die Spoorweë gewerk.

Die keerpunt in sy lewe het gekom toe hy Mohammed Glen, ’n stoffeerder, ontmoet het.

Mohammed leer hom nou om onder meer sitplekke van voertuie en stoele oor te trek.

Hulle bly in ’n garage, maar “ons eet goed en slaap warm”.

A “SPELLING BEE” COMPETITION for learners is presented annual­ ly in the Free State. The competition is hosted by the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture in co­operation with the Department of Education. Libraries enrol learners from local schools in their com­ munity. The libraries and the schools work together on this compe­ tition. The finals took place in Bloemfontein. The Ventersburg Pu­ blic Library in co­operation with the Ventersburg Intermediate School had five learners in the final level of the competition. Thato Mohoalali (gr. 3) was in the second position, Palesa Motsitsi was in the third position (gr. 6) and Lebo Monatisa was in the first positi­ on (gr. 7). AURORA PRIMARY was one of the schools visited by Dr Erna du Toit and Prof. Gawie du Toit of the University of the Free State (UFS). They were in Matjhabeng to com­ plete a research project on the teaching of Mathematics in schools. The project was initiated at the request of the Department of Education and involved the monitoring of teachers and their teaching methods as well as the testing of the learners’ Mathematical skills and perceptions. Molebo­ heng Nkhatho, who lives in Kutlwanong, was selected as one of the top four pu­ pils in the competiti­ on. She will repre­ sent the Lejwele­ putswa District in October.

Biblioteek vir almal DIE Riebeeckstad-skoolgemeenskapsbiblioteek word deur die Hoërskool Riebeeckstad bestuur, hoewel die biblioteek aan die Lejweleputswa-streekbiblioteekdienste behoort.

Hierdie reëling het tot stand gekom toe die biblioteek op Riebeeckstad toegemaak is en die skool aangebied het om dit oop te hou. Die skool het ’n perseel by die skool aangebied.

“Die skool wou sodoende verseker dat die publiek in en om Riebeeckstad hierdie geriewe sou kon geniet. Die amptelike opening is op 29 Augustus 2002 deur Webster Mfebe, LUR vir sport, kuns, kultuur, wetenskap en tegnologie, behartig,” sê Celeste Swart, mediabestuurder van die skool.

“In 2009 het hulle ons voorsien van ’n personeellid wat vroeg in 2010 ons verlaat het om by die polisie aan te sluit. Op 1 Augustus 2013 is Mathithi Motingoe heeltyds deur die departement van sport, kuns, kultuur en rekreasie aangestel om die biblioteek voltyds te behartig.

Swart sê dít is baie belangrik vir die publiek.

Die biblioteek is die volgende tye vir die publiek tydens skoolure en skoolvakansies oop: ) Maandae tot Donderdae: 08:30 tot 15:30. ) Vrydae: 08:30 tot 13:00.

As lesers gedurende skoolure die biblioteek wil gebruik, moet hulle asseblief deur die kantoor gaan, aangesien die skool se hekke gesluit is.

STRIKE AT GOLDFIELDS FET COLLEGE

In May 2012 Students embarked on a strike against the implementation of 80% attendance policy. A task team was then established and all stakeholders were consulted and interviewed in preparation for the implementation of the policy in 2013. The implementation of the 80% attendance policy is one of the strategies that Goldfields FET College embarked upon to improve the examination results.

This policy was communicated to all stakeholders including SRC and Parents.

The Chief Directorate FET Colleges and AET in the Free State, the MEC for Education in the Free State, Premier of the Free State as well as the Department of Higher Education and Training are all informed and aware of the 80% attendance policy and supported the implementation.

All Students who enrolled in 2013 signed the proof of registration forms, which clearly stated that the requirement for entrance to the exams was 80% attendance.

The policy has already been applied successfully in the first trimester, second trimester and first semester, and now all of a sudden students embarked on a strike opposing the implementation of this policy.

The College remains committed to ensure that our Students receive quality Education and Training to equip them for the world of work.

Alumni reunion held THE University of the Western Cape (UWC) invites all graduates and past students in Welkom and surrounding areas to attend the 60s and 70s alumni reunion weekend.

The weekend will take place from Friday, 4 October, to Sunday, 6 October, at its Bellville Campus.

The aim of the event is to welcome back the founding graduates (there were 17 students at the university’s first graduation ceremony in 1953, and now more than 4 000 students graduate annually), to reconnect, share their stories

and see how the institution is building on the foundation of their legacy.

The weekend-long programme is open to all UWC alumni.

It will include a breakfast with the rector, a formal dance, a jazz evening, campus tours and an afternoon programme of fun for the family and a remembrance service.

Educational trip around the corner THE Success Cultural Group and the Success Quito Crèche’s educational trip will take place on 24 September.

The trip is open to any interested children and youth. The closing date for payments is Saturday.

Lees en skryf was van kleins af sy grootste liefde – as tjokkertjie het hy agter sy pa se reusagtige Underwood-tikmasjien gesit en die al-

fabet met twee wysvingers geslaan.

Toe al sy vriende ná ’n jaar in die weermag na die Universiteit van Stellenbosch gaan, het hy begin rondswerf van die een werk na die ander. Hy was die meeste van die tyd in Johannesburg.

Hierdie jare was volgens Koos donker en rigtingloos, maar hy het darem streetwise geword.

Twee jaar lank het Koos op vryskutgrondslag vir Huisgenoot stories geskryf en dit het na groter sukses gelei.

Hy het sy naam verander na André Letoit om verwarring met ander skrywers te voorkom en ’n hele paar boeke (romans, kortverhale en gedigte) oor die volgende paar jaar gepubliseer.

Toe hy verveeld raak met die erns van die literêre wêreld, het hy ’n kitaar gekoop en begin liedjies skryf.

Daar is volgens hom nie regtig ’n verskil tussen lirieke skryf en gedigte skryf nie.

Die een ding het gelei na die ander en vandag het hy 11 CD’s agter sy nuwe naam – Koos Kombuis (Koos – sy ou bynaam en Kombuis omdat hy toe in ’n kombuis gewoon het en aan niks beter kon dink nie).

Hy geniet dit om in teaters oor Suid-Afrika heen op te tree, meestal solo, maar soms saam met ’n klompie briljante musikante. Hy tree ook nou saam met die Belgiese musikant Stef Bos op.

In sy hart wil Koos egter steeds eerder skrywer as musikant wees.

Sy gunsteling-stokperdjies is om rubrieke te skryf vir verskeie publikasies en webwerwe en homself oor te gee aan tegnologiese foefies soos Facebook en Twitter. ) Op Woensdag 23 Oktober tree Chris Chameleon hier op. Die kaartjies kos ook R125. Al bogenoemde vertonings begin om 19:30.

HAPPY ACTIVE FEET

Race attracts many participants THE Happy Active Feet race hosted

by Eskom Athletic Club Free State and MediClinic Welkom this year attracted 1 746 participants.

All together 391 children took part in the 1 km race, 33 toddlers were seen in action, while 905 women battled it out in the 5 km event and 401 men and women entered the 10 km event.

In the race for people in wheelchairs there were 16 participants.

The charity that benefitted from the race, Charlotte Moll Haven in Virginia, received a donation of R4 525.

Results of the different races: 1 km wheelchair race – senior men: 1. Karel van der Watt – Goldfields Nursing Centre - 7 min 10 (with support), 1. Molefi Hlapo – Harmony 7 min 2.

Senior women: 1. A. Greyling – Goldfields Nursing Centre - 8 min 36 (with support).

1. Dimakatso Mehlo - Harmony 10 min 01.

Top three athletes in each race: 1 km children’s race boys 6 -14 years: 1. Sengu Khomo –Riebeeckstad High School - 3 min 12.

1 km children’s race girls 6 - 14 years: 1. Elouise Pretorius – Eskom Athletic Club FS/Hentie Cilliers High School - 3 min 51.

GOEIE verdediging op ’n klipharde, gladde rugbyveld op die Noordwes-stadion in Welkom het beslis ’n rol gespeel in die Griffons se oorwinning van 24-19 oor die Bulldogs van Grens.

Dit was ’n harde wedstryd en die NoordVrystaters het nie geskroom om hul teen-

standers vas te vat en te duik nie.

Die besoekers het rustyd nog met 14-12 voorgeloop.

Dit was die Perstruie se derde laaste wedstryd in die eerste liga van die Curriebekerreeks.

Die fris senter, Japie Nel, is tans die Griffons se voorste drie-drukker. Hy spog nou met vyf drieë.

Die Griffons-vleuel, Norman Nelson, het die eerste punte op die telbord verskaf. Hy het ná 20 minute in die eerste helfte van die wedstryd agter die Bulldogs se doellyn gaan kuier.

Die Griffons het ’n bonuspunt behaal en hoewel hulle sesde op die punteleer is, het hulle nog ’n kans om die halfeindronde te haal.

Die ander puntemakers vir die Griffons was Inus Kritzinger, Japie Nel en Tertius Daniller

wat elk ’n drie gedruk het. Joubert Engelbrecht het met twee doelskoppe geslaag.

Die Griffons kom Vrydag op Potchefstroom teen die Luiperds te staan.

Die volgende tuiswedstryd is op 21 September teen SWD. Die laaste wedstryd in die eersteliga is op 27 September op Wellington teen die Bolandse Kavaliers.
