Verskeie tragiese gebeure in enkele week tref inwoners diep Molly Green en Alet van der Walt DRIE moorde, ’n selfdood, asook ’n ernstige aanranding en twee tragiese ongelukke, het inwoners van die Goudveld die afgelope week geruk. Twee van die moorde is op Virginia gepleeg, terwyl twee vroue van Welkom in die hospitaal opgeneem is nadat hulle tydens ’n huisrooftog met messe gesteek is. ’n Moord en selfdood het ook verlede week tydens ’n voorval van gesinsgeweld in Rheederpark plaasgevind. Zandean Fourie (28) is Maandagoggend in ’n huislike onderonsie met ’n mes doodgesteek. Die polisie het op ’n noodoproep gereageer dat daar probleme by die huis was. Hulle het op Fourie se lyk afgekom. Fourie het op Virginia grootgeword en haar ouers, André en Charlotte Fourie, woon steeds op die dorp. Sy het as apteker by Clicks in die Goldfields Mall gewerk. Haar dogtertjie (2) was tydens die voorval by haar pa. ’n Vriend van Fourie het hom intussen aan die polisie oorgegee en sal vandag in die hof op Virginia verskyn. In Sandania, ’n woonbuurt van Welkom, is Alma de Bruin (56) en haar dogter Sumarie (29) Maandagoggend tydens ’n huisrooftog aangeval. Alma is by haar snoepwinkel, wat sy van haar huis bedryf, oorval. Toe Sumarie haar te hulp wou snel, is sy ook met ’n mes gesteek. ’n Buurvrou wat Sumarie hoor gil het, het

op haar fluitjie geblaas en só hulp ontbied. Munisipale werkers en ander inwoners het dadelik gereageer en die aanvaller is in hegtenis geneem. Alma het baie bloed verloor en word nog in die hospitaal behandel. Sumarie is reeds ontslaan, maar sy kan nog nie haar hande gebruik nie. ’n Vrou van Virginia, Mapeitsi Mpondo (69), is Maandag op ’n plaas naby dié dorp vermoor. Mpondo het op die L17-plaas gewoon en is deur twee jeugdiges in haar huis aangeval. Beamptes van korrektiewe dienste het die twee verdagtes, onderskeidelik 18 en 19 jaar oud, in hegtenis geneem. Hulle verskyn vandag in die hof. ’n Familietwis ten aanskoue van drie jong kinders het daartoe gelei dat ’n man sy vrou in die agterkop geskiet en homself daarna om die lewe gebring het. Ismael Mseou (39) is op die toneel dood, terwyl sy vrou, Alina (36), in die Medicinic Bloemfontein behandel word. ’n Familielid sê haar toestand is ernstig, maar stabiel. Kapt. Stephen Thakeng, polisiewoordvoerder, sê iemand het die polisie Woensdag omstreeks 20:35 gebel en gesê daar is probleme by ’n huis by Uysstraat 15, Rheederpark. ’n Goudveldse seun, Jandré van der Berg (21), is in ’n ongeluk in Bloemfontein oorlede, terwyl Adam Reynecke (46) tydens ’n valskermsprong by die Tempe-lughawe in Bloemfontein ernstige rugbeserings opgedoen het. ) Lees die berig oor Van der Berg op bl. 3 en dié oor Reynecke op bl. 5.

Exotic animals do not make good pets Marti Will A CROCODILE marching down Highlands Avenue in Virginia on Tuesday morning was but one of a series of strange, but very sadly, true incidents concerning wild animals in Virginia and surrounds this week. “Since Saturday we have dealt with Cape otters, genets, crocodiles, and on Tuesday evening very late, a vervet monkey in Phomolong,” says Thea Smit, chairperson of the Virginia Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA). “Imagine the danger if the crocodile were to get to the river (Sand River), which it tried to do, and survived for a few years. The danger to the community and the stress on the animal is immense,” she says. The location of the house where the crocodile escaped from has been established and nature conservation is investigating the incident. It is suspected that there are more crocodiles on the premises. “On Saturday two Cape otter pups fell from a moving bakkie in Virginia. The vehicle had Cape registration plates and a white canopy,” says Thea. “The babies unfortunately did not make it. One was dead, and the other one barely alive, when we found them. We tried our best to save the poor little fellow but the injuries and trauma were just too much. Huge poaching of these crea-

JANDRÉ VAN DER BERG (21), ’n oudleerling van die Laerskool Kop pie Alleen, Riebeeckstad, en die Afrikaanse Hoërskool op Kroon stad, se dood verlede Woensdag het mense diep geraak.

HY was ’n groot, jong man van 21 jaar wat die lewe groot geleef het. Sy CV is dikker as die meeste 40-jariges s’n, sy prestasies was besonders – maar sy menswees en omgee waarvan hulle dikwels nie eens geweet het nie, oorskadu nou alles om Jandré se hartseer ouers in hul donkerste uur te troos en trots te maak. Renay van der Berg, sy ma, vertel hoe sy sedert Jandré (21) verlede Woensdag tragies in ’n motorongeluk in Bloemfontein gesterf het elke dag die mooiste stories van bekendes, sowel as onbekendes, hoor oor hoe hul lieflingseun en enigste kind nooit gehuiwer het om ander mense te help nie. Hy sou dikwels in ’n supermark wanneer hy iets koop sommer iemand anders se brood ook betaal. Die straatkinders het geweet: Jandré eet nie alleen roomys nie, hy koop vir hulle ook. As sportman het Jandré al kleintyd uitgeblink en hy het as laer- en hoërskoolseun vir die Griffons rugby gespeel. Hy het ook in atletiek en krieket provinsiale kleure verwerf.

Renay vertel Jandré was mal oor sport en veral balsportsoorte. “Life is a ball,” het sy dikwels gesê, want met Jandré was dit letterlik en figuurlik die geval. Die lewe moes voluit geleef word en toeskouer wees was nie iets wat hom tevrede gestel het nie. Sy het dikwels gewonder waar hy die energie kry om aan drie sportsoorte op ’n dag deel te neem en dan boonop ’n sessie in die gimnasium ook in te pas. Ná skool het Jandré hom by die Zoeloelandse Rugby-akademie aangesluit om sy rugbydrome na te streef. Hy het ook die Grens-Bulhonde op o.19-vlak verteenwoordig voordat hy besluit het om meer aandag aan sy akademiese kwalifikasies te gee. In Bloemfontein het hy aan die Universiteit van die Vrystaat (UV) ’n oorbruggingsjaar gedoen om sy wiskundepunt te verbeter en vir sy koshuis, Armentum, se eerste span gespeel. Hy het ook in die Varsitybekerreeks gespeel en vroeër vanjaar vir die Griffons se o.21 Curriebekerspan uitgedraf. Hoewel hy steeds sy rugby geniet het, het Jandré besluit om ’n loopbaan in die mynbou te volg. Sy ideaal was

om hom as rotsingenieur te kwalifiseer en hy het hom in Desember 2012 by die mynkonsultasiefirma Brentley, Lucas & Associates aangesluit. Ook hier het sy toewyding hom gou laat uitblink en as groentjie het hy reeds sy werkgewers beïndruk. Renay sê sy het altyd geglo Jandré se vrye gees en rugbytalent sou hom die wêreld in stuur, maar sy weet nou anders. In ’n motiveringsbrief op Jandré se skootrekenaar skryf hy sy ideaal is om hom as rotsingenieur te bekwaam. Op sy CV skryf hy die rede waarom hy in 2011 by die Zoeloelandse Rugby-akademie bedank het, is om nader aan die huis te wees. Jandré was baie gelukkig in wat hy gedoen het en sy ideaal was om eendag groot dinge in die mynbedryf te bereik. Rugby was nie sy grootste droom nie – om in sy pa, Paul, se voetspore in mynbestutting te volg en naby sy ouers te wees was vir hom belangriker. “Ons is oorweldig deur almal se bystand en dit troos om te weet mense was vir ons kind lief,” sê sy ouers. Jandré se troosdiens is Vrydag om 12:00 in die NG kerk Erfdeelgemeente in Riebeeckstad.

stance that banning pets is extremely foolish, short-sighted and cruel and would urge all chairpersons and boards of retirement complexes to search their consciences and put themselves in the shoes of the residents and ask the question: How would I

feel if my furry or feathered friend was not welcome at my place of abode? Ek is so jammer vir die gemeenskap wat so hard probeer om van hul omgewing ’n lushof te maak,

Matjhabeng buys water from Sedibeng Water and pays for it before reselling it to consumers. When consumers do not pay for water, it means Matjhabeng has to absorb the expenditure. This impacts the municipality’s cash flow negatively, resulting in it being less able to deliver services such as repairing potholes and broken streetlights especially where the Municipal Infrastructure Grant (MIG) funds cannot be utilised. Spruit in gevaar Alet van der Walt

’n RIOOLKRISIS kom in die township Phomolong voor. Riool besoedel die spruit buite Hennenman erg. Inwoners van die dorp is bekommerd die Whitesdam, wat blykbaar die dorp se ondergrondse water aanvul, gaan so besoedel word dat die boorgatwater ernstige gesondheidsgevare kan inhou. ’n Kanaalstelsel wat taamlik onlangs gebou is om die township se stormwater na die spruit af te voer staan vol erg besoedelde water en sodra dit reën, gaan die water verder vloei en in die spruit beland van waar dit verder vloei. Volgens inwoners van Phomolong is ’n verstopte rioolpyp daarvoor verantwoordelik dat rou riool nou al bykans ’n maand lank by ’n mangat in die township uitborrel. Inwoners het aan Vista vertel werknemers van die munisipaliteit pomp soms by die pompstasie riool op die grond uit wanneer hulle probleme met verstoppings ondervind. Die riool loop ook in die kanaal in van waar dit dan verder vloei. ’n Werknemer van die munisipaliteit het aan Vista gesê dit gebeur net in die uiterste gevalle en dan word hulle verplig om Waterwese in kennis te stel.

’n VEEWAGTER wat met Vista gesels het, se beeste drink noodgedwonge water uit die erg besoedelde kanaal.

DIE verstopte mangat op ’n straathoek in Phomolong.

Kinders speel laatmiddag in ’n straat waarin rioolwater al weke afvloei.

Man to appear in court LAST Friday the police arrested a Welkom man who was in possession of crack cocaine and cash. WO Wassie Wasmuth and a member of the Thabong Crime Unit arrested the man next to the Bedelia Primary School. The arrest was made after the police had received a tip-off. When the suspect saw the officers he swallowed some of the drugs, he was arrested and taken to his house in Ariel Street, where the police found 48 crack cocaine tablets, 2¼ g of CAT and R2 300. The drugs have a value of more than R10 000 and he will soon appear in the Welkom Magistrate’s Court.

Eskom reik uit na behoeftiges in FS PERSONEELLEDE van Eskom in die Vrystaat het 354 bokse skoene vir die jaarlikse Santa Shoebox-projek wat aan behoeftige kinders oorhandig sal word, geskenk. “Hoe ons ons kinders behandel, sê baie van wie ons is. Elkeen van ons kinders verdien om gelief en gekoester te voel. “Deur by die Santa Shoebox-projek betrokke te wees wil ons van die Vrystaat ’n beter plek maak vir ons kinders om in te woon – een skoenboks op ’n slag,” sê Lindi Mthombeni, hoofbestuurder van Eskom se Vrystaatse bedryfseenheid. Mthombeni se passie vir arm kinders en om iets aan die gemeenskap terug te gee het tot ’n veldtog gelei om die personeellede te inspireer om plaaslik in die Vrystaat betrokke te raak. Die bedoeling is om nie net in die feestyd te gee nie, maar om ’n gekoördineerde poging aan te wend om behoeftige kinders oor die jaar heen te help.

Eskom in die Vrystaat het ook ’n skool in Qwaqwa aangeneem. Personeellede het skryfbehoeftes geskenk en met ’n winterveldtog skoene, sokkies en truie vir die skool se 67 leerlinge gegee. Op ’n Santa Shoebox-feesviering op 25 Oktober het die koor van die Bartimeaskool vir dowes en blindes opgetree om personeellede te herinner aan die ware betekenis van die projek. Die Santa Shoebox-projek het sy oorsprong in 2006 in Kaapstad gehad. Die projek word deur ’n uitgebreide netwerk van vrywilligers oor Suid-Afrika en Namibië heen ondersteun. Dit word in alle provinsies verteenwoordig met 54 satellietkantore oor Suid-Afrika en Namibië heen. Die Vrystaat het drie satelliet-takke in Bloemfontein, Welkom en Ladybrand. Donate and save lives THE Welkom Business Blood Bonanza aims to increase the awareness of blood donations ahead of the festive season. Last year’s Business Blood Bonanza, with 511 units donated, was a huge success and the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) hopes to increase it to 550 units this year. This year the Welkom Business Blood Bonanza will be spread over the whole of November and businesses are welcome to make their donations at the SANBS at The Strip, Shop 36, Stateway, at a time and on a date that suits them. Businesses can also arrange for a blood donation at their premises and encourage their employees to donate blood. The Blood Bonanza will ensure that the Goldfields and surrounding areas have enough blood during the festive season. Businesses, schools and other groups of five or more donors will receive a framed photo. Businesses can also help to sponsor items in the SANBS goodie bag. Regular lucky draws will be held during the November blood drive.

Donors can support the mini-bleed on 29 November from 10:00 to 16:00 in the foyer of the Welkom Mediclinic. Some interesting blood facts to remember are that a blood transfusion takes place every 35 seconds; a single blood donation can help up to three patients, because blood is separated into plasma, platelets and red cells; and a total of 26% of blood is used in gynaecological cases and 4% goes to trauma patients.

Fun walk focus on campaign for no violence A FUN WALK will be held for no violence against women and children. The 2 km fun walk will start at the Riebeeckstad Police Station at 18:00. The objective of this fun walk is to unite the community against women and child abuse and to change the social acceptance of domestic violence; to unite against all form of abuse – physical, emotional and verbal abuse – and to show that service and support for the victims are accessible. Riebeeckstad businesses are encouraged to participate. All proceeds are in aid of the international campaign of 16 Days of Activism of No Violence against Women and Children. The entry fee is R20 for adults and R10 for children 12 years and younger. Each participant will receive a Bible and a certificate of participation. Candles with a holder can be bought at the SAPS for R5. All funds raised will be used for future crime prevention projects. A WELKOM resident took this picture at a liquor store in Dagbreek. Custo mers, including policemen and school children, buy liquor before 08:00. This is a contravention of the Liquor Act, as liquor stores are not allowed to open before 09:00 in the morning. A police car belonging to the SAPS Wel kom Radio Technical Component, was seen buying a case of beer at the store. The police were made aware of the matter and an internal investigati on into the matter will be launched.

THE Goldfields Circuit, Bongweni Church, held a confirmation ser vice on 18 September where 18 new members were received into full membership of the church. These members donated new shoes and clothes to 18 learners of the Vierhoek Intermediate School and they also donated clothes to a family whose shack had burnt down in Kutlwanong. Rev. George Sass led the service and thanked con firmants who passionately continued to proclaim the good news to destitute people and communities. He also encouraged children to concentrate on their education. After the service a lunch and drinks were served to the children and members of the school gov erning body.

TREVOR HATTINGH, Hennenman: This photograph was taken on the road out of Welkom, on the way to Virginia via Thabong on 31 October at 15:30. The driver came fly ing past me, with NO lights flashing or sirens on. When he passed me, I noticed that his safety belt was not fastened and then decided to follow him. He was travelling at a speed of between 120 km/h and 125 km/ h in an 80 km/h zone. He then proceeded under the bridge, towards Thabong where he had to slow down due to traffic. I then asked my passenger to take a photo of his vehicle and it was confirmed he did not have his safety belt on. He then turned off onto the off ramp and proceeded at a normal speed into Thabong, with no rush at all. I was recently fined R100 for not having my safety belt faste ned, but it seems that traffic officers are above the law. I decided that it would be a waste of time to report the incident to the authori ties as nothing usually is done about it. This was not the first time this has been noticed. Way too hot to shop CONCERNED CONSUMER, Welkom: AS a shopper in Welkom I am concerned after two experiences I had in businesses where the heat levels are unacceptable. I was in a video shop in the Checkers complex on Friday. To my surprise it was cooler outside in the 33 °C sun than it was in the actual shop. It is unacceptable to work in an environment like this. No person can function or concentrate in heat like that. I wanted to get some DVD’s for the weekend, but the sweat was running down my face. There are two fans that are ineffective and there is no extractor and no ventilation. At a second business in Stateway, the same thing. It is so hot in there you can barely breathe, and shopping is not a pleasure. One just wants to leave the premises as soon as you enter the shop. There are a couple of fans just swinging the hot and humid air around. Again there is no extractor or ventilation. For me as a shopper these were bad experiences, but even more disturbing is to think that the staff members have to work in these conditions. Our summer is getting hotter and hotter and it is not healthy to be in such an environment the whole day.

Corruption a cancer MOETI MOLELEKOA, Welkom: THERE is a bumper sticker with the words “When days are dark, friends are few”. During the dark days of apartheid, struggle heroes were detained, molested and killed – only a few clerics fought the previous regime. A handful of clergy were there when the ANC was formed and only a few of them joined the struggle. Clerics like Emeritus Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Dr Allan Boesak, Rev. Frank Chikane and Father Trevor Huddleston laid down their lives for others. Today, the dark days of segregation are over and we measure our two decades of democracy with statistics on the huge progress made. However, we are also facing a challenge of corruption, poverty, unemployment and inequality. Policies that contradict Christianity are passed in government while the clergy is dumbfounded. For instance, when the government removed religious education from our schools’ curriculum, their silence was deafening. Clerics are only bound to their selfish, godless interests. The Moral Regeneration programme, introduced by the governing party, sounded good, but died a slow death because its prominent custodians were found with their pants down. Christian leaders failed to revitalise the concept. The cancer that is corruption is eating away at our democracy.

Skilderagtig mooi Molly Green VIR Johan van der Westhuizen (59) wat diep spore in die mynbedryf in die Goudveld gelaat het, was dit ’n wonderlike ondervinding toe hy sy eerste skildery verkoop het. “Ek gaan nie dié skildery mis nie, want ek gaan nog baie skilder,” het hy aan Vista gesê. Johan, wat mensebestuurder by ’n myn was, het 35 jaar in Welkom gebly. Hy het toentertyd by Anglo American begin werk. Ná sy aftrede in 2011 het hy na die Strand verhuis. “Ek het besluit ek moet ’n stokperdjie kry en ek het begin skilder.” Hy neem kunsklasse by Jimmy Gibb, ’n afgetrede kunstenaar wat ’n kunswinkel in Durbanville het. Johan se eerste kunsuitstalling is by ’n kleuterskool in die Strand gehou en dit is dáár waar hy sy eerste skildery verkoop het. Hy is ’n Kapenaar van geboorte. Hy het in die Paarl grootgeword en het aan die Universiteit van Stellenbosch gestudeer. “Om te skilder is nou my heeltydse stokperdjie. Ek skilder minstens drie uur elke dag en woon twee keer ’n week kunsklasse by.” Sy twee susters, Ina Myburgh en Connie Blommerus, skilder ook. Hulle bly ook in die Strand.

Driving School in Odendaalsrus. “As it is the first Odendaalsrus Market and also Christmas, the idea is to make it a special and fun day out for the community with prizes and entertain-
