“DIE skadevergoeding van meer as R8,8 miljoen wat die Welkomse prokureur van die minister van polisie gaan ontvang, sal nooit kan vergoed vir die geestelike skade wat dié briljante vrou gely het nie. Dit is te betwyfel of sy ooit weer as prokureur sal kan praktiseer.” Só sê haar prokureur, André Podbielski. Die vrou (me. X) was 27 jaar oud toe sy drie jaar gelede deur ’n ontsnapte reeksverkragter aangerand en naby haar woonstel verkrag is. Dié man het gedreig om haar dood te maak en het haar in die rigting van die vervalle St. Helena-swembad gesleep. Toe die ligte van ’n aankomende voertuig op hulle skyn, het die man haar gelos en weggehardloop. Petrus Kalao (30) is later weer in hegtenis geneem, verhoor en tronk toe gestuur. André Podbielski, die jong vrou se prokureur, sê die staat het toegegee dat die polisie nalatig was. Kalao was in Augustus 2009 verhoorafwagtend. Hy het doodluiters by die hof uitgestap en die jong prokureur laatnag by haar woonstel in St. Helena ingewag. Die skikking van meer as R8,8 miljoen is een van die grootste wat nog in die Vrystaatse hooggeregshof toegestaan is. Podbielski sê hy ken me. Regter Albert Kruger het gelas dat die minister van polisie aan haar R6,8 miljoen moet betaal vir verlies aan inkomste, meer as R1,46 miljoen vir toekomste medikasie, en R483 700 vir toekomstige sielkundige en psigiatriese behandeling. Die staat moet ook haar regskoste betaal. “Haar lewe is deur ’n misdadiger se sinnelose daad verwoes. Refilwe Mochoari “I AM tired of being a gang member, because all there is to it is death”. These are the words Thabang Sekhobo (18) said a few hours before he was brutally murdered in a gang-related fight on Saturday morning at a funeral in Meloding. Sekhobo, together with Peter Molale (16), and William Moleleki (32), all belonging to the street gangs Marasta, Magumosha and Makaota, were killed in Meloding over the weekend. The Sekhobo family said they were extremely hurt by the awful death of their child. “At home Thabang was an obedient child. He died at a time when he was tired of being involved in gangsterism. We used to tell him to end his relationship with the gangs and he kept saying he would. “He even told us that he was scared he would die young one day as a result of his involvement, but this was clearly too late. “We just wish these children could notice how dangerous their activities are.” Mamello Mokhuoane, police spokesperson, said no one had been arrested for the three mur-

ders yet and the situation in Meloding was calm. “Three cases of murder were opened for further investigation. “On Saturday morning members of Meloding SAPS were asked to escort a funeral procession in Meloding. The plea was put across by one of the bereaved family members. They said a number of gangsters would attend the funeral and were afraid they might cause chaos. “After the funeral, a group of boys told the police that their friend Thabang had been killed at Albany, Meloding. The police rushed to Albany where they found him lying on his stomach. On closer inspection it was clear that the victim had been hacked with a sharp object at the back of the head. He also had multiple stab wounds in the back. He was already dead. “On the same day, the police found another body lying on the ground with a gunshot wound in the back. This was Molale’s body. Yesterday the police were informed about Moleleki’s body which was found with several gunshot wounds to his stomach in his bedroom.” The police are looking for suspects. THE Matjhabeng Local Municipality is going electronic in its communication with residents. Residents will soon receive their monthly service accounts via SMS service or email. Sebenzile Ngangelizwe, mayor of the municipality, said adding electronic communication to the service delivery mandate of local government was a step in the right direction. “Research indicates that more and more people use the internet or other electronic means to communicate or do business. People will be able to do business with us from their homes or offices. The service is not only about emailing accounts to residents, but also an important communication vehicle to forward information about municipal activities and projects to

citizens. The service is free of charge to residents. “Consumers will continue to receive their monthly accounts, but the electronic communication will alert them in time about the amount payable. “Residents will be able to communicate service delivery enquiries to the municipality, either by means of an SMS or the internet option. “Residents wishing to participate in this electronic service offering, are requested to register their details such as their cell phone number with the municipality. “Registration forms will be available at all municipal offices, fire stations and libraries in Matjhabeng from Monday, 17 June. People can also register online by visiting Matjhabeng’s web site at www.matjhabeng.fs.gov.za,” he said.

Hy kan nie net sing, kitaar en klavier speel nie, maar hy skryf ook liedjies. Daarby was hy lid van die Suid-Afrikaanse skole-tennisspan wat in Amerika gaan meeding het. Hy spog ook die afgelope drie jaar met Vrystaatkleure in tennis. “Ek wou aanvanklik niks weet van kitaar

THE contemporary leaders are talking about unemployment without defining and dealing with it decisively. Let me hasten to say that by talking too much and doing nothing about this problem, the contemporary leaders have contributed to unemployment at the national, provincial and local governments in our beloved country. In fact, I would like to advise them to listen to what the wise South African author Prof. Vilakazi has to say and to share his advice: Wozamfana wami ngikudo’s indlebe. Khuluma kancane, wenze kakhulwana. The author realised that today young and old do too much talking while they do very little serious work. He therefore advises the upcoming generation to speak less, do more. Allow me also to remind them that subsequent to the ushering in of the new political dispensation in 1994 the Free State was economically viable. The economy of each and every town in the province was sustainable. For example, Welkom was the hub of the economy of the Free State. In the heyday of its economy, Welkom could employ everybody and anybody; including those the contemporary leaders claim they are

unable to employ because they lack skills, education and job experience. In Welkom, the following places could employ people from all walks of life: Mining companies which have become dens of inequity; the Mothusi and Welkom railway stations which are no more; the Thabong Municipality, which employed people as bus drivers, as workers at the bus shed, at the nursery, as road/ street cleaners, etc.; oil companies; Sasko; Welkom Industries, most of which have been turned into residential areas of late. In our province we used to have employees of the Provincial Administration Organisation (PAO). This organisation was charged with the responsibility of maintaining and keeping the roads in good condition. The PAO workers were residing in their movable hostels, or ditente as they were known, strategically along the different main roads in our country. The so-called leaders are not interested in the improvement of the lives of South African citizens. Instead, they are interested in enriching themselves, their family members, their friends, and their cronies. These leaders are also interested in holding parties (entertaining themselves), conferences for

their political party, and electing themselves into positions. If this is not true, why are they not seen to be doing the following: ) opening the gold mines and starting the new shafts which could employ thousands of South Africans in Ventersburg and Verkeerdevlei; ) upgrading the local airport (farmers will use it to export their products); ) rebuilding the Mothusi and Welkom railway stations – in short, paying attention to the railway transport which could employ thousands; ) opening blanket factories (we have raw materials for this purpose) rather than importing blankets from China; ) opening shoe factories– we have raw materials for this purpose from the surrounding farms; and ) building more agricultural high schools where our children, farm employees and farmers could be educated about farming. We need commercial farms in South Africa as opposed to subsistence farmers. I call on all South Africans – black and white – to speak out. We can no longer keep quiet when the contemporary “leaders” are bringing our country to its knees. For how long are we going to suffer in silence?

Teresa het haar werk by die biblioteek bedank toe dié mark en onderneming begin groei het. “Ons het werkers wat heeltyds handgemaakte produkte vervaardig. Ons het selfs ’n heeltydse kunstenaar, Engela Smith, wat in die winkel werk.” Teresa, wat ’n oog vir mooi goed het, sê sy en haar man, Pieter, wat die antiekewarewinkel besit, het jare gelede begin om op kunstefeeste uit te stal. Hundreds of blankets donated Refilwe Mochoari HUNDREDS of blankets have been donated for the yearly fun-filled Vista Pep Stores Winter Warm-up Blanket Project. The main aim of this event is to keep the less privileged people in the Goldfields warm this winter. Elmarie Jansen van Vuuren, manager of Pep in the Checkers Centre, Welkom, said she was happy about the turn-out of the project. “A blanket donation event was also held last month at the Checkers Centre Pep in Welkom and it was a great success. We are happy and grateful to all

the people who helped in making the event a success. The Goldfields Motorcycle Association was a great asset to us as they donated 100 blankets on that day. “We also want to thank the public together with the organisations which are Vista, Bikers Church and Alet Viljoen of the Sonskyn Projek for participating in this project. These organisaitons were of great help to the project and will help in distributing the blankets to those people who need them. “The day was also filled with lots of entertainment for young and old pleople and soup was prepared to help ease with the cold winter Saturday,” she said.

Sentrum kry nuwe baadjie DIE Silwerbron-sentrum vir bejaardes op Wesselsbron het onlangs ’n nuwe baadjie gekry. Die omheining voor en gedeeltelik aan die kante is deur ’n lid van die bestuur en plaaslike kontrakteur, Willie van der Walt, opgeknap. Die nuwe palissade-omheining van 244 m het veiligheid baie verbeter. Geld vir nog 90 m se omheining word benodig om die projek te voltooi. Silwerbron het in 2012 sy 21ste verjaardag gevier. Die sentrum bestaan uit 41 selfsorgwoonstelle en ’n eetsaal en ten volle toegeruste kombuis wat middagetes voorsien. An-

der geriewe sluit ’n haarsalon, kliniekdienste en ’n biblioteek in. Inwoners gaan gereeld op uitstappies en kunsklasse word ook by die sentrum aangebied. ’n Minibus verskaf een keer per week vervoer na winkels. Tariewe vir die sentrum word op ’n glyskaalgrondslag volgens inkomste bereken. Nuwe jukskeibane is op 13 April amptelik in gebruik geneem met ’n jukskei-toernooi waaraan die hele gemeenskap deelgeneem het. ’n Jukskeiklub is intussen gestig en nuwe lede is baie welkom. Jukskeispeeltye is weekdae van 15:00 tot 18:00 en Saterdae van 11:00 tot 15:00.

Suspects arrested A TOTAL of 70 suspects aged between 18 and 35 were arrested and 10 illegal shebeens were closed for selling liquor illegally without a licence during a station crime prevention operation that was conducted over the long weekend in Thabong. The police spokesperson, Mamello Mokhuoane, said the operation, which had been led by the crime prevention commander, Lt Col Moleleki Matsabu, commenced on Friday at 07:00 and ended on Monday at 20:00, with 70 suspects behind bars for crimes ranging from murder, possession of dangerous weapons, possession of dagga and drinking in public. “Illegal shebeens were also closed during the operation and over 500 F of alcohol was confiscated and the owners were issued with fines. “Dagga confiscated from the suspects collectively weighed 300 g. “The cases were registered with the Thabong police and the suspects will appear before the Welkom Magistrate’s Court on Monday. “The station commander of Thabong, Brig. Cois Muller, applauded the members for a job well done and encouraged the members to work harder,” Mokhuoane said.

Time for Polar Bear Swim THE toughest of the tough, or the craziest of the crazy, get together to have some real cold fun at the annual Polar Bear Swim at the Bundu Camp near Ventersburg. Altogether 416 swimmers took part in 2012. This year’s Polar Bear Swim will take place on 29 June, starting at 12:00. The popular event started in 1996 with 12 swimmers. The ever popular 4x4 event will be staged again this year with some new and old blood competing in and organising the event. This event is great for competitor and spectator alike. At 12:00 this programme takes a break for the swim and resumes again for the afternoon session after the swim. Several purpose-built vehicles and 4x4s have already entered (enquiries: Riaan 082-554-3093). For safety reasons no scramblers or quadbikes will be permitted “Lots of camp sites are still available, so all are encouraged to camp Friday and on Saturday evening,” says Felix Burri, the organiser.
