‘Leave names, pay Eskom!’ Marti Will THE people have spoken: “Leave our street names alone and pay Eskom!” This was the unanimous reaction on Vista’s Facebook page this weekend when Vista asked residents their opinion on the proposed street name changes for Welkom. The announcement was made by the Free State Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation on 24 April. The advert was placed in the Free State Sun. Mathabo Leeto, formerly the executive mayor of Matjhabeng and Lejweleputswa and a resident of Odendaalsrus, is the MEC for this department. According to the notice, the public and media have 14 days, until 18 May, for comment. More than 100 people have vehemently responded to Vista’s call for comment. These comments include: ) Maipato Kapotsa: All this does not bring unity in the Free State, we are the Orange Province, ons praat Afrikaans and re bua le Sesotho; this is our heritage and pride, we need no changes. I stand in solidarity with all who say no to name changes, after all, most of those proposed names are of politicians and people who never lived in the Free State. Why can’t we have names and social events that bring unity and togetherness in the Orange Province, rather than things that will have political influence and be discriminatory to the history of our province. ) Mosa Mabitla: We really don’t care about street names. Instead of that, why don’t you focus on paying Eskom? Don’t shy away from things that matter! ) Derek Munnik: Pay your Eskom bill with our money and stop worrying about something as insignificant as changing names of streets. ) Papi M. Mabele: Honestly, raising your voice here – on this page – won’t help. Rather let’s attend these public hearings and raise our voice against these changes. Mathabo has been deceiving us since her days in the Matjhabeng and Lejweleputswa offices. ) Letebele Maikhoso: Eish, I find this useless! I don’t even know half of those people on the list. ) Edwin Malefane Disema: Disgusting to bring such an item before council during this time. ) Nadine Claudette Dercksen: Bloody hell? Some of these names have bugger all to do with apartheid! Can’t they pay their Eskom account first? This name changing costs an enormous amount of money.
) Nkanyiso Malunga: I couldn’t agree more, Mr Munnik. The Eskom bill is not an issue caused by residents, the municipality must pay back the money! ) Mokhobo Mothabe: I don’t see any reason for changing the names of the town and the streets. ) Stan Gottschalk: Verkiesing is naby. Nou vry ons vir stemme. Enige stemme. Solank hulle net stem vir die ANC. ) Maipato Kapotsa: Mooi gesê, Stan . . . ) Martie Huyser Krüger: . . .Please pay Eskom, use our money wisely to uplift the poor. We must start looking forward and work together to do the right things to save our beautiful country. ) Enzo Raffa: Please don’t waste the money that is so badly needed to fix the infrastructure of the city. ) Tebogo Tsehle Wa Campbell: This Mathabo woman does not know a damn thing about the history of Welkom, history of Free State mxm . . . ) Mohau Giant-Bear Pholo: Have any of those people ever set foot in Welkom? ) Linda Busuku: Have the people at the department lost their mind? For what reason would they want to change those names? Wasting tons of money which could actually go towards doing something actually useful. ) Anza Fouché: Geez, pay Eskom, clean our city now u wana spend money on changing street names . . . fix up Bongani Hospital and build houses for the poor and leave the street names. ) Grant Goodsell: No electricity, bigger potholes than ever, unemployment, crime . . . So let’s confuse everyone further and waste money on name changes . . . What a waste of resources! ) Dian Smith: I do not care what the streets are called. But please answer a few questions first: 1) What is the projected cost of these changes? 2) Can’t this money be better spent on: a) Pay Eskom arrears b) Pay Sedibeng Water arrears c) Do regular rubbish collections d) Repair all the potholes in the streets you want to rename first e) Repair all the water leaks. ) David Kuhn: This municipality does not have the money to waste on this now. There are more urgent matters at hand. This should not be allowed until the municipality is rendering the service expected from a municipality. ) The public consultation meetings are on 21 May at 17:00 at the Thabong Community Centre and on 22 May at 16:00 in the Ferdi Meyer Hall, Welkom. To dispute the name changes, call Jeff Simango (office of the speaker) on 057-391-3238 or send email to simongome@gmail.com, or call Jeff Mphomela on 051-410-4702 or send email to jeff@sacr.fs.gov.za.
