Protests turn violent

Leeto condemns destruction in Hennenman Refilwe Mochoari MATHABO LEETO, the executive mayor of Lejweleputswa, has strongly condemned the violent protests in Hennenman that have now reached their fourth day. Leeto said this during a Census 2012 press briefing in Welkom on Tuesday. On Monday roads were barricaded and shops looted by protesters. Thousands of protesters took to the streets on Monday demanding that the bucket system be totally eradicated, sites be allocated to those who had applied and that the sewerage system in the Phomolong township be completed. “We won’t tolerate the opportunist elements that these protesters are embarking on. I strongly condemn the violence because now the rights of innocent citizens have been infringed. Children were prevented from going to school and forced to take part in the protest. Other people could not get to work because roads were barricaded and shops were robbed. “I have noticed that the protesters are mostly from areas where people do not pay their rates and taxes. We understand the concerns you have, but I am advising you to apply for indigent services at the municipality in order for the municipality to help as much as it can, but we’ll not tolerate the violence. It is unacceptable. “We have heard the concerns and we’ll monitor local government to address these issues, Leeto said. Seventy of the protesters appeared in the Hennenman Magistrate’s Court yesterday after they had been arrested on Monday for public violence. But Lesedinyana Rampeta, ANC Youth League chairperson for the Phomolong branch, said they wanted the municipality to say they would fix their mess.

“The sewerage system that is incomplete escalates the number of people with tuberculosis in this area. I applied for a site in 1997, but nothing has been done. “What saddens us, is the fact that the mayor of Matjhabeng, Sebenzile Ngangelizwe, no longer takes us seriously. Things have

gone bad ever since he became mayor. We want him to be removed from the mayoral seat in this municipality,” said Rampeta. Malebo Khosana, police spokesperson, said the situation in Hennenman was calm and police were monitoring the area.
