Theatre newly restored ‘Devastating fire was perhaps a blessing in disguise’ Marti Will JUST under R7 million and 23 months later, and the grande dame of theatre in the Northern Free State has risen like a phoenix from the ashes to be restored to more than her former glory. “The time has arrived for the Ernest Oppenheimer Theatre to be restored to the beautiful place it once was,” says Dulcie Harris, manager of the Ernest Oppenheimer Theatre in Welkom. “Sadly, in October 2011, the stage suffered a devastating fire. But when I look back today, this was perhaps a blessing in disguise, as it has given us the opportunity to renovate the theatre and get it back up to world class standards,” says Dulcie. With the exciting renovations that have been done, Dulcie has endeavoured to keep the theatre as originial and authentic as possible. The changes have been made to suit the style of the theatre, but bringing in a modern element. “Where possible we have made use of local contractors, but where necessary we made use of specialists, like the theatre consultant Denis Hutchinson, to ensure top quality and only the best,” she says. When the theatre first opened in 1968 it was equipped with the most modern equipment available. This made the Oppenheimer one of the top ten theatres in South Africa for many years. “And now after the renovations, we again sit with some of the most technologically advanced equipment to be found

inspired to follow their dreams. Dulcie has entered into an agreement with Prof. Jonathan Jansen of the Free State University and Nico Lewis of the Free State School of Dramatic Arts to allow for synergy and student development between the two centres. The first full-scale production which will grace the renovated stage of the Ernest Oppenheimer is the Goudveld-Hoërskool’s Joseph and The Amazing Technicolour Dream Coat on 3, 4 and 5 October. The official opening will take place from 24 to 27 October with a week of comedy, music and ballet. The week will end with a picnic in Central Park on Sunday morning with the FS Youth orchestra, and later in the day choirs will be performing. The renovations and upgrading of the theatre have been made possible by the Memorial Trust and the Matjhabeng Municipality.
