Moordplan: Man in hof Refilwe Mochoari ’n BEDRAG van R200 000 is na bewering wat die bekende Welkomse sakeman Tom Parsons sou betaal om ’n Carletonvillese dokter dood te kry. Parsons, onder meer eienaar van Shomene 25 Transport in die Goudveld, is verlede Woensdag op R20 000 borgtog vrygelaat nadat hy op aanklagte van samewerking tot moord, en intimidasie op dr. Julian Jacobson, algemene praktisyn van Carletonville, in hegtenis geneem is. Parsons is deur kapt. Mossie Mostert van Carletonville in sy luukse huis in Kiepersol in Welkom in hegtenis geneem. ’n Ingeligte bron oor die moordplan het aan Vista gesê Parsons wou die dokter,wat sy seun Eben (27) voor sy dood behandel het, vermoor, want hy meen die dokter kon Eben, wat in 2009 in die Mediclinic Potchefstroom aan H1N1 (varkgriep) oorlede is, se dood voorkom het. Daarvoor was Parsons glo bereid om R200 000 te betaal. Bewerings is dat Parsons glo meer as 50 intimiderende selfoonboodskappe aan Jacobson gestuur het. Tydens Parsons se inhegtenisneming het hy aan Vista se joernalis geskree: “Dit is reg, jy kan die foto’s maar neem. Hoe meer moeilikheid, hoe beter”. Hannes Peyper, Parsons se prokureur, het aan die Volksblad, Vista se moederkoerant, gesê die bewerings dat sy kliënt saamgesweer het om Jacobson te vermoor is vergesog en dit sal in die hof ontken word. Jacobson het ook vandeesmaand gehoor dat hy deur die Raad vir Gesondheidsberoepe weens Eben se dood aangekla gaan word. Die ondersoek het bykans drie jaar geduur. Vista het Jacobson se spreekkamer gebel, maar hy wou nie kommentaar oor die saak lewer nie. Parsons sal weer op 15 Mei in die hof verskyn.

Children treated to day at fair Refilwe Mochoari FOR many children, going to the Welkom Fair is just another form of entertainment when they are not busy, but for the underprivileged it is just a dream. The Matjhabeng Local Municipality made this dream a reality for over 50 homeless children and underprivileged preschoolers in Welkom. On Monday the group was taken to the Welkom Fair for a fun day where they could ride different swings of their choice for free. Lucy Tlhone, the Matjhabeng member of the mayoral committee (MMC) for special programmes for children and the youth, said the aim of the outing was to create a relationship with the homeless children. “As Matjhabeng we want the homeless children to avoid crime and go to school. As for the preschool children, we know that some parents cannot afford to bring the children here so we are here to make it a reality. And we want all children in Welkom to know that they are special and important. “We are going to get to know the children better and from here we’ll take it to the next level by engaging them more often. To break the ice, we brought the homeless children here to get to know them better because we feel other platforms are too serious,” she said. The children were happy to be part of this outing, with many of them saying they never thought they too would be part of such a fun activity. Pepe Tau (20), who lives behind the

Welkom taxi rank and who is originally from a small town called Makwase outside Potchefstroom, said he has been homeless for more than five years. “I was living in a shelter in Welkom, but it was shut down. So, the only option was to live on the street. I am very happy to have been given an opportunity like this. I have never been to a fair in my life and this was a really great opportunity. It is a dream come true,”

The components are sold to local scrap dealers as the lighting masts contain aluminium and cast iron. Bokvel Petersen, a Matjhabeng Municipality law enforcer, warns residents to be vigilant. “To replace one of these lights costs R90 000. To date seven of these lights have been vandalised in Thabong. Veldtog om diere te steriliseer kry momentum Molly Green DIE veldtog om Goudveldse diere te laat steriliseer kry momentum. Drie tewe van Claws is reeds gesteriliseer en nog drie sal binnekort geopereer word. Die doelwit met die Goudveld-steriliseringsveldtog is om soveel moontlik honde en katte by Claws en die Dierebeskermingsvereniging (DBV) te laat steriliseer. Steriliseringrekenings is by twee plaaslike veeartse, drs. Thys de Vries in Welkom en Piet Mathee in Riebeeckstad, geopen. Weldoeners kan geld daar inbetaal wat vir sterilisering gebruik sal word. “Daar is net te veel diere by diereorganisasies en diere op straat wat nie huise het nie en verder aanteel,” sê

Maria de Wet wat die veldtog saam met Magda Engelbrecht begin het. “Die huidige ekonomiese toestande veroorsaak dat al hoe meer eienaars van diere net nie die geld het om diere te laat steriliseer nie en dit vererger die probleem,” sê Magda. Sy is ook bereid om honde wat by Claws aangeneem word gratis te bad en te skeer indien nodig. “Dit maak aanneming net soveel makliker,” sê Magda. Mielieboere wat vroeg die seisoen geplant het, kan nog redelike oeste lewer. Sonneblomaanplantings vind ook by die nat toestande baat en boere sal wel nog koring kan plant. Anton Botha, verteenwoordiger van Graan SA op Bultfontein, Hertzogville en in Bloemfontein, sê die reën het te laat gekom. “Groot skade is reeds aan mielieoeste aangerig. Boere sal wel nog koring kan plant.” Hy sê die reën sal weiding aanhelp, maar omdat die reën te laat gekom het, is groot skade reeds aangerig. Johan Grové, voorsitter van die direksie van PreFSA, sê vir die boerderybedryf was die afgelope seisoen allesbehalwe rooskleurig. Geweldige hittetoestande het hul tol geëis en groot skade is aangerig. “Boere wat egter vroeg in die seisoen mielies geplant het, het nie te swak gevaar nie. “In die Bothaville-distrik word oeste van tussen 7 tot 12 ton per hektaar verwag. “Met die sonneblomaanplantings gaan dit nie so goed nie. “Na verwagting sal sonneblom sowat 1,2 ton per hektaar in die Bothaville-omgewing oplewer.” Hewige haelstorms wat onlangs tussen Bultfontein en Welkom geval het, het gelukkig nie groot skade aangerig nie. Op Bultfontein self het haelkorrels so groot soos duifeiers geval. Die gewasse was egter groot genoeg om die haelaanslag te weerstaan.

Renay chosen as vice-chair RENAY VAN DER BERG, a local businesswoman, was recently elected as the vice-chairperson of the Businesswomen’s Association (Free State). As the voice of women in business, the Businesswomen’s Association of South Africa (BWASA) is the largest and most prominent association of business and professional women in the country. It plays a key role in highlight- RENAY VAN DEN ing the current status BERG of women in leadership and acts as a lobby group that advocates on women’s business issues in an effort to transform the economy. It is more than a network, it is the voice of women in business. A vision that aligns to Van der Berg’s personal and professional passions. Van der Berg is currently playing a very active role in empowering SMME entrepreneurs and cooperatives in the Free State. She is regarded as a professional, especially in the services sector, being a consultant in business and brand development. Man missing after zama attack THE Welkom police are investigating a case of a missing person after two male persons were attacked by a group of zama-zamas at the Western Holdings No 1 Shaft which is usually dominated by illegal miners. On Friday, 19 April, a case of a missing person was registered with the Welkom police after two males, Thabiso Nkunyane (27) and Motlalentoa Motlaopa (25), both Lesotho nationals, were attacked by a group of zama-zamas. Nkunyane managed to flee the scene and Motlaopa was caught and assaulted by the group. Motlaopa has disappeared and until now could not be traced. The motive for the attack is unknown, but it is suspected that it was the Lesotho groupings of “matlama” and “terene ha e tlale” that were fighting. Students helping to uplift crèche STUDENTS of the Free State School of Nursing have made it their responsibility to help uplift the Masakhane Crèche at Jantolo Hostel in Thabong. The crèche, which caters for 41 underprivileged children, faces many challenges such as the lack of basic needs like water and electricity and toilets. Project leader S.T. Ramotsoela said the lack of proper sanitation posed a great threat as it exposed the children to many illnesses. “At the crèche, the children sleep on the carpet as there are no mattresses. In winter the teacher uses a paraffin stove to keep the children warm exposing them to haz-

ardous fires. The children do not have learning and playing items like stationery, toys and swings. “We plead with all the good Samaritans out there to assist and participate in the betterment of these children’s circumstances by donating old toys and anything that can be handy. “As a group we are also raising funds by washing cars and selling plates of food from Mondays to Fridays between 08:00 and 16:00. IT is that time of the year again. With the winter cold getting more and more noticeable, Pep has started their Winter Warm-up Blanket Project. This year, the organisations involved will be Vista, Bikers’ Church and Alet Viljoen. Bins have already been placed at Pep Stores, with the main store at the Checkers Centre being the hub of it all. The main event, which will take place on 11 May, will be a fun-filled day with lots of entertainment for young and old at the store.

Mental outlook discussed A BIBLE-BASED programme will be conducted in Welkom in the Ferdi Meyer Hall (Civic Centre) on 4 and 5 May. The theme of the assembly is Safeguard Your Mind (Matt. 22:37). The programme has been designed to help everyone give serious attention to his or her own mental outlook on life. It promises to be very informative and beneficial to all who are serious about true worship. On Sunday morning at 10:10 a symposium will be conducted on how husbands, wives, parents and children can contribute to family happiness. All are welcome to attend this assembly and no admission fees are charged. The programme starts on Saturday at 09:40. At 10:00 one of the highlights of the programme will be presented with the theme Think God’s thoughts, not man’s. On Saturday afternoon, the thought-provoking question: “Who moulds your thinking?” will be discussed. One of the final talks of the assembly will encourage one and all in attendance. Through this creativity, he started extra classes teaching hundreds of learners and helped them with their home-work and revision of previous examination papers at the Hlolohelo Primary School. “Thabo Merafe, my friend, and I founded the Mathemagics Project in January 1999 and in 2001 I was elected as chairperson. “In 2003 I enrolled at the Central University of Technology (CUT), Free State, where I graduated in Electrical Engineering (light current). “In 2005 I registered a non-profit organisation, the Naledi Development Academy (NDA). We assist learners with mathematics, physical science and accounting. I’m currently assisted by nine voluntary instructors.

WHEN faced with the challenge of heading a household as a child, Mabusane Ntlangoe, an award-winning community leader, did not cry foul but started his own community project by coaching mathematics students and becoming a self-taught IT technician. Mabusane’s father, Jerry, died tragically while he was still a toddler and his mother, Gladys, got married and moved on with her life. His paternal grand-parents also passed on as well as his father’s siblings. He had to fend for himself and other surviving grand-children. Despite ensuing challenges, Mabusane completed matric in 1997 at the Lephola Secondary School. The following year he started tutoring math-

ON 20 April at 20:25 a newborn baby girl was found abandoned near one of the houses in Lerotholi Street in Meloding. It is alleged that the newborn baby was covered in blood and wrapped in a blanket. Mamello Mokhuoane, police spokesperson, said: “One of the community members alerted the Community Service Centre (CSC) of the Meloding police. Const. John Matlaletsa and his crew who were patrolling the area swiftly responded to the call. Upon their arrival at the scene they found members of the community surrounding the infant. “Matlaletsa took the infant to the police station and called a social worker. The social worker examined the infant and then cal-

led the Emergency Services (EMS). “The baby was admitted at a nearby hospital in Virginia. She is still at the hospital receiving treatment. It is suspected that she might be six to seven days old. “A case of child neglect was registered at the Meloding police for further investigation in order to find out who the mother of the infant is,” he said. The Meloding police is appealing to anyone with information about the mother of the infant to come forward or call the investigating officer, Sergeant Tshidiso Qhamakwane of the Thabong Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) at 071-409-3300, or call the crime stop number at 08600-10111.

Self-defence workshop presented

MEMBERS of the Bronville Police Social Crime Prevention Unit organised a self-defence workshop for community members in their sectors. The workshop was held in order to equip the community with skills to ward off dangerous attacks by criminals. The workshop was held at the Bronville Community Centre last week. Malebo Khosana, police spokesperson, said the community members comprising young people from 15 years travelled from Mandela Park in Sector 1 and Extension 15, 20 and 21 situated in Sector 3. Const. Tshidi Mokhuamathe kickstarted the workshop. “The crimes reported in your streets in sector 1 and 3 are committed by attackers who are using knives. We are going to assist you with this workshop to be prepared for any attack.” Members were informed about sexual offences procedures and also passed some safety hints. They were also shown the various sexual crime kits for both adults and minors. “It is important to be examined by a

medical practitioner after a rape case has been reported. “There are victims who refuse to be examined which leads to the dismissal of a case. Others simply withdraw cases in court. These tendencies are making our work less easy as the state loses a lot of money on equipment. What hurts most, is that perpetrators of rape are not deterred from committing this

crime. “Women should refrain from walking alone at night while under the influence of alcohol as predators are waiting to prey on them. “Rather go with someone you trust and make sure that you are not accompanied by someone you do not know,” said Mokhuamathe. A. Abrahams, a black belt karate expert, demonstrated

self-defence techniques informing the community that they should learn to be calm during an attack. “When you are calm you can think fast and apply the correct technique to prevent the attacker from inflicting harm. “Do not panic because if you do, you will not be able to decide how to protect yourself,” warned Abrahams.

A circle was formed and Abrahams demonstrated the different techniques of selfdefence. Most of the people who attended the workshop were shocked to learn how easy it could be to fend off the attacker or even disarm a knife-wielding attacker. After the demonstrations, community members practised the techniques on each other and applied themselves well.

Tasks and responsibilities: Technical: • Develop and implement the environmental strategy appropriate to the mine • Review and provide specialist advice and services in the application of the Mine’s Environmental Management System (EMS) • Continuously analyse business processes, impact of legislation, business requirements and stakeholder views to evaluate risks and plan for the management of risk areas • Evaluate the effectiveness, suitability and adequacy of environmental management • Analyse and interpret information in order to guide the Mine’s environmental strategy and reporting as per stakeholder requirements • Develop, implement and review environmental-related policies, procedures and plans for the Company in line with its strategic objectives • Remain informed of global trends and environmental standards of good practice and interpret their relevance for Finsch Mine and its operations • Draft, review and approve scopes, budgets, projects and schedules for departmental and consultant assignments, including managing of Environmental Impact Assessments • Provide assurance to internal and external stakeholders regarding the Mine’s environmental management performance. Managerial: • Supervise environmental staff • Manage the key performance areas of environmental staff in the company by setting and monitoring performance standards and correcting deviations to achieve the Company’s objectives • Plan and co-coordinate the section’s workload by setting and adjusting individual objectives to achieve set targets • Prepare career development plans, appraising progress and providing training and coaching to develop environmental practitioners to their full potential • Ensure that all licences, permits, etc are in place. Financial: • Recommend and incorporate cost-saving initiatives into budgets and controls expenditure within approved parameters • Prepare annual environmental budgets for approval and controls expenditure • Ensure that environmental/ social accounting practices are utilised in order to drive eco-efficiency and inform the reduction of future liabilities. Stakeholder engagement: • Build relationships across the Petra pipeline by sharing business information, knowledge and EMS requirements • Monitor adherence by internal stakeholders and consultants to agreed scopes of work according to services level agreements • Liaise with internal and external stakeholders with regard to all matters of environmental management, including EMS requirements, concerns, permissions, exemptions and legal liability. Minimum requirements: • Grade 12 • 3-year tertiary qualification (minimum NQF level 6) in the field of Environmental Management or relevant Natural Science • At least 8 years’ postgraduate experience in the field of environmental management • At least 5 years’ operational experience in the mining industry running an Environmental Management System (EMS) • Code 08 driver’s licence • Good verbal and written communication in English. Die gemeente en besoekers het saam met die dreigende reënweer heerlik feesgevier en gesmul aan die groot verskeidenheid eetgoed wat beskikbaar was. Tuisgemaakte lekkergoed, pannekoek, koeke en terte, poeding, gebraaide aartappelringe, gebraaide sosaties, worsrolle, afval, kerrie-en-rys, vetkoek en ’n verskeidenheid ander eetgoed is te koop aangebied. Vars vleis was in oorvloed, maar het gou uitverkoop. Die Wakis-boereorkes het almal met tradisionele boeremusiek bederf, terwyl ou en nuwe vriende ’n hond uit ’n bos in die koffie- en teetuin gekuier het. Die eregas was Hennie Smit, die befaamde Bertie van Egoli, en hy het sommer lekker ingeskakel en met almal ’n geselsie aangeknoop. Ná die verrigtinge het hy daar in die

deurmekaar kerksaal vir die skare konsert gehou, terwyl die weer buite aanhoudend gedonder en geblits het. Met die reën en hael wat op die sinkdak neergekletter het, het hy net harder en

harder gesing om homself hoorbaar te maak. Die besoekersgetalle het vorige jare ver oortref en die organiseerders beplan om hierdie genotvolle geleentheid volgende jaar nog groter te maak.

THE Hoopstad Social Reintegration Office (SRI) helped the Tswelopele Municipality as part of their community outreach and cleaning campaign. Dirkie Kotze, project leader of the SRI, decided to reach out to the local municipality of Hoopstad and to give them a helping hand to help and clean some of the streets in town with the

help of their probationers. The aim of this cleaning project is to develop community awareness about health towards people and animals. The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) would like to inspire the rest of the community to reach out and to live a healthy lifestyle.

“It is very important to keep the town clean for the health of the people and that of the animals and for the environment. “This office and its members enjoy community projects and they want to set a good example at all times for the community about the neatness and state of their town,” said Kotze.
