Rabbits slaughtered Over 600 carcasses found Marti Will HORRIFIC findings of injured rabbits, rabbits crammed into small cages and the wholesale slaughtering of rabbits were uncovered in Odendaalsrus last week Friday (26/05). “A case of cruelty against animals will be opened against owners of an informal rabbit farm in Odendaalsrus. The Welkom and Virginia SPCA obtained a warrant to investigate the matter. The inspectors were shocked and horrified to find approximately 450 to 500 rabbits, housed in small wired hutches in the garage of the residential property. Thea Smit of the SPCA says the owners of the property admitted to slaughtering the rabbits in their kitchen, but claimed that it was for their own consumption. Further investigation revealed that they were donating the slaughtered rabbit carcasses to churches in the area and selling the meat to the MJ Fish Market and Food Lovers Market in Welkom. Both stores were visited by the inspectors and both stores admitted to buying rabbit meat from the said owners of the investigated property and selling it to the public from their shelves. On this visit, the SPCA issued a warning for the owners to immediately improve the living conditions of the rabbits or face prosecution. “An extended warrant was again obtained and the inspectors returned. Two deep freezes were packed with recentlyslaughtered rabbit carcasses. An estimated 600 rabbit carcasses were discovered,” says Smit. “All the rabbits on the property were individually inspected, under very hostile circumstances. The rabbits were kept in overcrowded, small, wired hutches, some eight in one hutch. “Juvenile rabbits, up to eight, were left with their mothers in crowded hutches. Most rabbits had bleeding feet and sores on the soles of their feet as they had no resting area in the poorly-maintained hutches. Mothers feeding their young had no room to move freely and naturally. There was no bedding and the food provided was of poor quality.” There were no records of the number of rabbits kept and no available veterinary

One rabbit, with severe sores under the soles of her feet and wounds from infighting, was confiscated and taken to the Welkom SPCA veterinarian for observation and tests. On 25 June the inspectors, accompanied by the Department of Health, Veterinary Health Profession and the Local By-Law Department, returned to the property. “We discovered that all the rabbits, except for one that was left in a hutch, had been removed by the owners without notice. The owners claimed that they had taken the rabbits to the local township and handed them out to whoever wanted to take them.” A list of the new owners of these rabbits was eventually obtained. Now more charges in terms of the Animal Protection Act, no. 71 of 1962, section 8.4, will be pursued against the owners for concealing animals. “We found some of the rabbits in the local township. The community confirmed that a woman stood at the corner and demanded that all people passing by take rabbits from her for free, as many as they wanted. What happened to all the mothers that were still feeding the babies remains a concern,” says Smit. Smit says this creates an even bigger problem with uncontrolled breeding and the possible overpopulation of rabbits. Many rabbits have already been returned to the SPCA and some community members agree that they are not up to the task of caring for rabbits that were forced into their care.

TWO fake cops conned a woman out of R3 000 after they had promised to secure the release of her two sons from jail. The 42-year-old victim was visiting her sons who had been arrested and were being detained at the Welkom Police Station on Saturday, 25 April, at about 15:30. “While she was talking to her sons, there was a person busy cleaning near them. This person heard their conversation. After the victim had finished talking to her sons, the suspect approached the victim and told her that he knew a captain who could help her get her sons released. The suspect called the so-called Capt. Mosoeu and, upon his arrival, he demanded R4 000 for the release of the children,” says Const. Kethabile Mofokeng, Welkom SAPS Corporate Communication, Free State. The victim told the two suspects that she did not have money. She phoned her husband and the husband told her that he could only afford R3 000. She went to fetch the money and handed it to the fake captain at the Goldfields Mall. After that, she was given the cellphone

number and told a police van would drop the boys off at the Magistrate’s Court. She went there to wait for the children, but to no avail. When she tried to phone the number, she was unsuccessful. She realised that she had been conned. “She went back to the police station to enquire about Capt. Mosoeu, but she was told there was no person with that name or surname,” says Mofokeng. A case of theft under false pretence was registered for further investigation. Identikits of the two suspects were compiled. The first suspect is 1,7 m tall, of medium build, light in complexion and he speaks fluent Afrikaans even though he can also speak Sotho. The second suspect is 1,9 m tall, of slender build and medium in complexion. Both suspects are between the ages of 50 and 55 years. Anyone who can help with the tracing of the suspects or their whereabouts is requested to contact Det. Sgt. Chris, Lilette en hul een dogter Chrizette het Sondag hul getuienis in die Vrye Baptistekerk in Naudéville, Welkom, gelewer. Die aanvaller is tydens die struweling in die kop geskiet. Hy is die volgende dag in die Pelonomi-hospitaal in Bloemfontein aan sy wonde dood. “Baie mense wens ons geluk met die man se dood, maar ons as gesin is ongemaklik hiermee. Ek verstaan die seer van mense wat dit sê, maar ek verstaan nie dat iemand moes doodgaan en dat mense hieroor bly is nie,” sê Lilette. “Die man moes doodgaan, want hy het na on huis gekom om ons met geweld dood te maak. Hy het dit gesê: Vandag maak ek julle dood.” Die Jacobs-gesin is Christene, en diep gelowig.

God sê in sy Woord: Wraak kom My toe. Dit is nie vir ons om wraakgevoelens of -gedagtes te hê nie. Ek het daar in die trauma-kamer gevoel God is by my.” Ds. Hannes Delport van die Vrye Baptistekerk sê dit was vir almal betrokke geweldig om te besef dat Chris se aanvaller vlak by hom gelê het. “Toe Chrizette vir my sê sy het hom, die aanvaller, vergewe, het ek besef God is groot, ons moet ons bitterheid laat staan. God het ons almal met die voorval baie sterker in ons geloof gemaak,” het Delport gesê.

Welkom welcomes outlet MORE than 7 000 customers streamed through the newly-opened McDonald’s on Friday (26/06) and Saturday (27/06) during the official opening of the food outlet in the city this weekend. This included 744 cars through the drive-thru over the opening Friday and 747 cars on the opening Saturday. Customers ordered 4 071 burgers on Friday alone. Believing in the youth, owner Stephen Browning has hired 58 people under the age of 34. “All our employees are from the Welkom area. The opening far exceeded expectations and the phenomenal welcome McDonald’s received from the people made the town truly live up to the name Welkom. I also have to thank the customers for their incredible patience and understanding on the opening weekend as we were totally swamped. We had 80 people working each day on Friday and Saturday to try and serve the people of Welkom as quickly as possible, but the number of customers simply overwhelmed us. McDonald’s and Welkom clearly have a great future together,” says Browning.

ON Wednesday, 10 June, personnel and volun teers of the Cansa Welkom Care Centre visited the weekly oncology clinics at the Bongani Hospital, St Helena Private Hospital and Mediclinic Welkom and handed out socks, beanies, scarves and knee blankets to patients receiving their weekly cancer treatments. Delicious cupcakes baked by local Cansa volunteers were also handed out, much to the delight of the patients. The warm winter knit ted goodies were donated by the Free State Care in Action (VVA) knitting club in Wesselsbron – they receive wool donations from within their community and the VVA also subsidises the fi nancing of this project. This year they donated a total of 321 items to Cansa Welkom. The Welkom North Dutch Reformed Church also donated a large number of warm blankets towards this day to help Cansa warm the hearts of cancer patients. The winner of the dual recliner, Willie van den Berg, was the person that stood the longest and thoroughly enjoyed his twin seater after standing for close to 14 hours. Rioolmoeras blyk ‘goudmyn’ te wees Mike van Rooyen HOEWEL daar waarskynlik ’n onwelriekende geurtjie oor hang, het riool in die Vrystaatse Goudveld nou ’n “goudmyn” geword. In ’n poging om daar (stink)ryk uit te stap, is honderde zama-zamas (onwettige mynerwerkers) daagliks rondom die Thabong-rioolaanleg by Welkom besig om die riool vir goud te “myn”, blyk uit ’n hofaansoek in die Vrystaatse hooggeregshof. ’n Maatskappy het vroeër vanjaar ’n kontrak met die Matjhabeng-munisipaliteit gesluit om die rou rioolmoeras in die omgewing rondom die rioolaanlegte by Thabong, Witpan en Therona te verwyder. Dié maatskappy, Aurus Capital, het ’n voorlopige dringende bevel teen dié munisipaliteit gekry. Net toe die maatskappy ’n week gelede met sy eerste vier groot vragte riool op pad was, het Welkom se verkeersmanne die vragmotors by Bothaville voorgekeer en beveel om die riool weer in Welkom te gaan aflaai, blyk uit die hofstukke. Waarnemende regter Allan Williams het nou gelas die munisipaliteit moet hom by die kontrak hou en mag Aurus Capital nie verder verhinder om sy onwelriekende vragte te vervoer nie. Dié vragte word na ’n aanleg van die maatskappy

Wanneer die polisie op die berugte G-hostel toeslaan, word die goud en goudstof deur die inwoners in die toilette afgespoel om vervolging vry te spring. Dit kan ook op ander wyses in die rioolstelsel beland. Sindikate betaal die zama-zamas vir die goudstof wat hulle uit die afsaksels van die riool myn. Die zama-zamas het dadelik op die vier vragte wat weer afgelaai moes word, toegesak en begin myn. Olckers sê die enigste mense wat voordeel kan trek uit die munisipaliteit se besluit om hom te verbied is die onwettige mynerwerkers. Adv. Inducts new president

A BONE MARROW transplant could be performed on Bradford Fenn any day now. Brad (39), the son of the well-known longdistance runner Julian Fenn from Virginia, is expecting news on the trial drugs, as well as the bone marrow, in the next few days. “My blood counts have been up and down recently, which is what the doctor expected. “My bone marrow has apparently taken a beating due to the very high dose of chemotherapy this time around, so it’s struggling to produce new cells,” says Brad. He says this is actually what the doctors want, “because even though it means it’s struggling to produce new cells, it’s also

struggling to produce the leukemia cells. “As soon as I can maintain healthy blood counts by myself without interventions like blood transfusions and injections, I can go home for a break. “I feel absolutely fine. It is a bit frustrating, but they know best.” Brad was diagnosed with lymphoma in February this year. He has already received several chemotherapy treatments in the Capital Haematology Hospital in Durban. Brad and his wife, Angela, have two children, Ruby (7) and Logan (5). Animal lover will be missed

CLAWS has lost a beloved friend and colleague, Venetia Corona. Venetia started her fight against cancer in April this year. She faced this with great courage and always had a positive attitude, even after her leg had been amputated due to the cancer. She was determined to get well and to go back to Claws. Venetia sadly lost her battle in the early hours of Tuesday morning (23/06) at the age of 57. Venetia joined the Claws team in 2004. She had an overwhelming passion for all animals. No task was ever too great or too small if it would help her four-legged friends. Apart from her passion for the animals, she loved doing fundraising for Claws, and treasured her chats with all the shoppers and passers-by. One of Venetia’s favourite hobbies was fishing. She could sit for hours next to a river watching her line. Venetia will be sadly missed by all those who knew her, but she has left us with many fond memories.

Hundreds arrested WITHIN five months, the Welkom task team arrested 426 people for serious crimes. The Welkom and Thabong Trio Task Team made a huge breakthrough by arresting 195 people for different crimes committed in and around Welkom. “Under the capable leadership of Capt. Ernest Hantsi, this success came as a result of the hard work and dedication of the SAPS members,” says Capt. Stephen Thakeng, spokesperson for the Welkom police. The task team was appointed by the provincial commissioner in the Free State, Lt.Gen. Thabethe Mpembe. The arrests made were in cases of house robberies, car hijackings, business robberies and many more registered cases. Items such as electrical appliances, unlicenced firearms, cellphones, an undisclosed amount of cash and a car were confiscated during the different operations that were held, says Thakeng. “This team also went to Marikana in the North-West in May to do an operation there. This led to 231 people being arrested for different crimes. “The team that operated in Marikana comprised the Welkom Trio Task Team, Tactical Response Team (TRT) Welkom, Cluster Crime Prevention Thabong, SAPS Rustenburg, Crime Prevention Rustenburg, Dog Unit Rustenburg and Mounted Police.” During this operation eight firearms, knives, stolen property, liquor and an SAPS belt were confiscated. Four murder suspects were also arrested. They were linked to several murder cases registered in Bronville, Welkom and the North-West. The firearms that were confiscated were also linked to the four murder suspects.

THE tax season for individuals to submit their Income Tax Returns for 2015 starts on 1 July. As part of their outreach activities to bring the South African Revenue Service (Sars) closer to the community, the Sars Welkom Branch Operations Engagement team will be visiting the Welkom Flea Market on Saturday, 11 July, from 08:00 to 11:00, using the Sars Mobile Tax Unit to assist members of the community to complete their Income Tax Returns for 2015. They will also help people with any outstanding tax returns that may be identified as outstanding for the previous years, as these may cause penalties. Prior to taking command of the Bronville South African Police Service (SAPS), Gopane had been a station commander at Heilbron. Gopane has an honours degree in Police Practice. He is also the recipient of two awards, namely the Special Provincial Commissioner Award and the award for Best Police Officer of the Year 2008-’09. YSBEERSWEM

Ysbere grom vir koue Molly Green ALTESAAM 416 swemmers het vanjaar die ysige (8 grade C), modderige water van die Sandrivier getrotseer vir die jaarlikse Ysbeer-swemgeleentheid. Dit was ysig koud en die reënweer en koue wind was nie juis tot voordeel van die moedige swemmers nie. “Ons is vroegoggend deur donderweer en reënbuie wakker gemaak. Die miljoendollar-vraag was: Gaan die mense opdaag?” sê Felix Burri, organiseerder van die Ysbeerswem wat elke jaar by die Bundukamp naby Ventersburg aangebied word. Die eerste swemmers het teen 07:00 hul opwagting by die Bundukamp gemaak en teen 11:00 was daar honderde deelnemers en toeskouers. Die 4x4’s het hindernisse aangedurf terwyl swemmers hulself sielkundig op die ysige uitdaging voorberei het. Teen 12:00 was daar 416 waaghalse op die walle wat die aftel deur die ondersteuners kon hoor. “Dit was ver en koud en fokus op daai wal was al wat die swemmers kon doen. Met swoeg en min sweet het hulle die wal bestorm om dit so gou moontlik uit

te klim. “Net ’n rukkie ná die swem het die hemele oopgemaak en ons was weer papnat van kop tot tone, maar niks kon die geesdrif demp nie,” sê Burri. Die 4x4’s het toe in die nat en glibberige toestande gesukkel. Die deelname is gestaak en daar is verder sonder wiele onder in die gat gekuier. Die kompetisie is deur Apie Eksteen met sy Range Rover gewen, gevolg deur Ikey Folkus in ’n Land Rover. Daar was 25 inskrywings. Nagenoeg R21 000 is ingesamel by die hek en daar was kosverkope vir Engoprojekte ten bate van gesinswelsyn in die streek. “Vir ’n ieder en ’n elk was dit ’n wonderlike dag vol opwinding en uitdagings en almal sien uit na volgende jaar se malligheid. “ ’n Woord van dank aan almal wat ons ondersteun het, veral aan Goldco Midas wat die medaljes geskenk het, die paramedici, menseredders en vrywilligers by die hekke, kospotte en inskrywings. “Dankie ook aan Bundu vir die pragtige perseel,” sê Burri.

ORKNEY se besoekende ysbere, Wynand en Irene Bezuidenhout, het vanjaar hul tweede Ysbeerswem kom swem.

SWEMMERS in visnetkouse en feetjievlerke het ook vanjaar die Sandrivier kom tem. Bloemfonteiners René en Christa van der Broek en Appels Claassen is getroue ysbere. Appels en René het vanjaar die sewende keer die Ysbeer geswem terwyl Christa al agt keer dié uitdaging voltooi het.

SELFS ’n French maid kan die Ysbeer doen. Simone Claassen van Virginia het vanjaar aan haar eerste Ysbeerswemgeleent heid deelgeneem. Sy het ongelukkig haar verestoffer verloor, maar darem ’n medalje losgeswem.

DIE Rasse woon al die afgelope 20 jaar die BunduYsbeer by. Soms durf hulle die ysige water aan en sommige jare kom geniet hulle net die pret saam met ander besoekers. Van links is Leon, Nicolene, Kevin en Ednese Ras.

DIE enigste ysbeer wat Saterdag gereed vir die koue dag was, was Sasha, die poolhond. Sy het die dag saam met haar eienaar, Irene van Wyk van Hennenman, geniet. Sasha is behoorlik deur die pretsoekers bederf en het die kollig gesteel.

DJ uses birthday to help the needy FANTAS THE DJ, a well-known and highly-blessed DJ in the Free State, celebrated his birthday on 15 June with style. This event was different to other celebrity parties. It started with a soccer tournament and a netball match. The winners of the tournament received a trophy and a team picture. The event was held at the Ttshireletso Primary School in Nyakallong, Allanridge. After the sports tournament, Fantas gave school shoes and uniforms to 100 learners and food hampers to 20 families who were facing poverty. He was assisted by community leaders to identify these learners and families. The event was attended by more than 500

people, including the youth structure, old-age organisations, religious leaders and political leaders. Among the people who attended the event was the MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Mathabo Leeto, and a member of the Free State legislature, Mojalefa Buti. In his speech, Fantas said that he felt the need to share his success with the needy people. As a progressive member of society, it is his duty to help the needy and assist the government to fight against poverty. Because he believes in the power of education, he decided to give learners who were in need school shoes, thereby putting smiles on their faces.

True life story hits stage SOUTH AFRICA celebrated Youth Month in June and will observe Mandela Day in July, which both commemorate heroes and heroines for their contributions in the development of the country. Pacofs, an agency of the Department of Arts and Culture, in partnership with Thambo Theatre Producers, proudly joins in the celebrations by showcasing the untold story of Mike Masote’s dream. From the early age of 11, Mike Masote dreamed of being a violinist. While only the popularised versions of the story of black people burning down schools during the apartheid era has been commonly told, Pacofs and Thambo Theatre Producers took the initiative to tell his story, as he was also a victim who experienced his school being burnt down by white police for teaching what they regarded as “white music”. He had his dream almost shattered. Ntate Matlhaela Michael Masote also known as “Monna Wa Mmino” was born in 1941 in Johannesburg in the suburb of the then Sophiatown fondly known as “Kofifi”. He spent the beginning of his childhood there, until his family was forcibly removed in 1955. After he had taught himself how to play the violin using only a wooden plank and a stick, he took up violin lessons in Johannesburg after completing his matric. Masote wanted to study music further, but experienced difficulties in applying to tertiary institutions in South Africa. This lead to him successfully registering to study abroad at the Royal School of Music in London where he obtained his licence in violin teaching in 1973. He is the first black South African to be awarded a B Mus degree by the University of South Africa (Unisa), in 1998, which was then followed by an honorary licentiate in music, also from Unisa in 2005. Among his many projects and initiatives he established the Soweto Youth Orchestra, the Mmabatho Youth Orchestra, the Klerksdorp Youth Orchestra and the Seventh Day Adventist Orchestra, to name a few. His contribution to the development of choral and classical music remains indispensable to aspirant violinists. About six decades later, his story unfolds on stage through a production arranged by

Ntate Masote’s own son, Kutlwano Masote. What better way to tell his story than to work with his son, who is also one of the musical successes who followed in the very same footsteps of the man the story honours? The production Masote’s Dream is a moving tale about both his dream and his musical journey. It was initiated as an idea spurred on by Zuko Nodada and has since evolved into a production lead by Thambo Theatre in partnership with Pacofs, the Orkater Theatre Company from Amsterdam, the Soweto Theatre and the National Arts Festival. The production features mostly local artists from the Free State, including six classical music players (ranging from violinists to altos) as well as singers and actors. It is directed by a Dutch director Dagmar Slagmolen who specialises in telling stories in which the narrative is driven by music. This dynamic production is not the “regular classical music rendition”. The audience can expect a thrilling and exciting musical theatre experience which will unfold with storytelling through imagery with the players as part of the action. The play premiers at the André Huguenet Theatre (Pacofs) in Bloemfontein from 2 to 4 July at 18:30 before moving to the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown. After the festival the show opens in the Soweto Theatre, and then comes to Welkom. Masote’s Dream will be performed at the Ernest Oppenheimer Theatre on 31 July and 1 August at 19:00. BILLY BIG-EARS is specifically written to deal with the issues that our children face on a daily basis all over the world. So, in a fun and entertaining manner, and falling directly in line with the Caps outcome for the subjects Arts & Culture and Life Orientation, Billy Big-Ears teaches the children not to discriminate, tease or bully others that happen to look a little different to themselves. Over and above these problems, human trafficking and child labour have also become prevalent in society today.

This production teaches the children not to be misled by strangers and to help each other in these circumstances by means of calling an adult for help. All the above-mentioned is positively illustrated through drama, song and dance, which will leave the children singing with positive attitudes towards each other. Billy Big-Ears will be presented to all schools, gr. 1 to gr. 5, at the Ernest Oppenheimer Theatre on 28 to 30 July at 09:00 and 11:00. Junie se SuperSport Let’s Play-sportster van die Maand vir Vista is R’hordian de Lange (16). R’hordian is ’n leerling aan die Goudveld-Hoërskool in Welkom. Hy presteer in hokkie en krieket en speel ook tennis. Hy is tans lid van die eerste krieketspan, asook onderkaptein van die eerste hokkiespan. R’hordian speel ook vir die NoordVrystaatse o.19-Bokkie-krieketspan. Hy toer in die komende vakansie na Margate waar Rudi Steyn, voormalige Suid-Afrikaanse krieketspeler, die span gaan afrig. Die eerste hokkiespan het in Maart na die Margate-sportskool getoer waar hulle die toernooi gewen het. Die span is daar deur die Kovsies se eerstevrouespan-afrigter afgerig. Die Goudveld-Hoërskool se hokkiespan het die onlangse wedstryd teen die Hoërskool Welkom met 2-0 gewen. In hul wedstryd teen die Hoërskool Sand du Plessis (Bloemfontein) is R’hordian as speler van die wedstryd aangewys en het ’n prys ontvang. R’hordian se leuse is: “Die belangrikste om te wen is om te glo dat jy kan wen, maak nie saak teen wie jy speel nie.” Meer oor Let’s Play Oor die afgelope paar jaar is SuperSport as sportgesag in Suid-Afrika gevestig. Met so ’n sterk sportinvloed binne die Suid-Afrikaanse mark, is SuperSport perfek geposisioneer om hierdie krag te ontgin en om die gemeenskap en maatskappye te motiveer om werklik ’n verskil in die samelewing te maak. Phakisa plays host to tour THE smell of rubber and fuel will cloud the 4,24 km track as a result of a fierce battle of driving skills and breathtaking manoeuvres during the big Midas Historic Tour at the Phakisa Freeway this Saturday (04/07). The race is sanctioned by Motorsport South Africa (MSA) and hosted by the Free State Tourism Authority (FSTA) to promote the province as a sports tourism destination. The Midas Historic Tour boasts ten categories of racing in the National Challenge, Regional Championship and Club Championship. The exciting African Endurance Series has been included in the programme to bring more fire into the line-up. Spectators attending this event will also be entertained by other motor racing categories including the fast Formula Ford Kent, Loptus Challenge, Pre 66 Sports and GT Cars, Pre 66 Legends Production Cars, trans Am Racing Saloons, ISP, Historic

Endurance Series and Historic Single Seaters. Another attraction will be the WPMC Invitational Sports & GT Cars. The most exciting part is that the drivers are locked neck and neck on the championship tables and this round at the Phakisa Freeway will separate the men from the boys, due to its tricky layout and tight corners. The Phakisa Freeway could now be declared as a permanent home for the Historic Tour as it brought a record number of competitors last year and this year will not be different as around 180 competitors are expected on the day. Saturday’s programme starts at 07:30 with qualifying races. Actual races start at 09:30. ) Entry fee for spectators is free on the outside on the embankments and spectators can bring their braai and cooler boxes and watch the races from inside their warm cars. ) Entry fee inside the paddock is R100 (including the pitlane).
