Photo: Teboho Setena Teboho Setena A COURTROOM drama, characterised by intimidation, tears and romance, unfolded in courtroom Q in the Welkom Regional Court during the sentencing of three former police officers on Wednesday, 30 September. The episodes of this soapie-like drama occurred in a courtroom which was packed to capacity. Rahab Letsie (47), Kedibone Elsie Dlamini (34) and Johannes Macala (34) will each serve an effective 15 years in prison of the 38-year sentences which were imposed on each one of them by acting regional magistrate Colin Nekosie. The three were found guilty on charges relating to theft, corruption, defeating the ends of justice, the possession of gold-bearing material and transporting gold-bearing material. Macala (constable), Dlamini (constable) and Letsie (captain) are part of the 21 police officers who were dismissed from service after the department had found them guilty on similar charges. The trio’s sentencing leaves 18 officers

still on trial, which is expected to end next month. As Nekosie passed the sentences, some family members and friends of the accused tried to put on brave faces, while others broke down in tears. The accused hoped for a review of their cases or more lenient sentences, but they were dealt a devastating blow when leave for appeal was turned down. In the midst of this drama there was an episode of intimidation when some people tried to prevent photographers from taking pictures of the accused. The tension-filled scene played itself out during a court break after sentencing and at the end of the hearing. The drama-filled sentencing hearing also saw romance play itself out when Macala and his fiancée, a police woman in uniform, kissed in full view of the courtroom after the hearing had ended. Both Macala and the woman were in tears as they hugged each other, while his co-accused, Dlamini and Letsie, tried to shield their faces from the press photographers.

Wheelchairs to better lives Teboho Setena THE Siyazenzela People with Disabilities, a Kutlwanong non-profit organisation caring for children and adults with disabilities, has received a significant boost towards empowering those with disabilities. The latest boost has come in the form of 20 wheelchairs which were presented to the beneficiaries during a function held at the Kutlwanong Love Life Centre on 25 September. It was a joyous moment as recipients and members danced and sang upon receiving the donation. David Thize from Thabong in Welkom expressed joy as his 27-year-old son, Masixole, received a wheelchair. “This is unforgettable, it has given me hope. I did not expect this, being a resident of Welkom,” said Thize. The National Council for Persons with Physical Disabilities in South Africa (NCPPDSA) made this donation possible. David Matlakala, NCPPDSA project assistant, said the decision to aid the newly-formed Kutlwanong-based body was taken after reading about its plight in Express Goldfields, a sister publication of Vista. “We then improvised to secure 22 wheelchairs which were donated by the Buddha’s Light International As-

VAN DEVENTER, Welkom: REFERRING to the recent news about the skeleton and skull that was dug up at the Cradle of Mankind and the scientists calling it our latest ancestor, I say: “Not for me, thanks.” If those scientists want an ape for an ancestor, that is all right with me. But my ancestors were Adam and Eve, created by Gods’ own hand and in His image. A thing that amuses me is that these scientists use the phrase “we think” quite a lot. It is based on Darwin’s evolution theory. Compare this to the Holy Bible which is a history book of real happenings and real people. My children used the phrase “we thought” every time they had done something wrong and was caught out. Makes you think! They claim this is a half-ape half-man. What next? Half-donkey half-elephant: a donkeyphant. I can take that same skull to a good sculpture, tell him to put meat and muscle on it, in the form of clay, and make it look like a dog-man or anything else my imagination can come up with. A picture in the newspaper showed a prominent South African kissing this sculp. If he tried that while the ape was alive, he would have landed in hospital with some serious head injuries. Consider these two scenarios: One: Evolutionists came up with a theory about an aquatic ape-man who developed

Stomach and intestines found in dirt bin THIS horrific find was made on Monday morning at about 07:00 when a pedestrian walked past this municipal dirt bin, which is chained to a pole in front of the alley next to the building situated at 310 Stateway. It seems to be a stomach and intestines belonging to a large animal. The slaughter was probably done the night before, as the blood was still fresh. The contents of the dirt bin were removed shortly thereafter.

I cannot recall the last time our refuse was collected on the allocated day. I would estimate that collection on the right day has averaged less than a very generous 10% of the time during this calendar year. Apart from the negative visual impact of piles of rubbish in the street for days on end, there are a few health hazards. Firstly, there is the danger of an increase in the rat population (my cat attests to this fact) and the health hazards that these rodents bring. Then there is the temptation for those less fortunate to examine the rubbish bags looking for food or items of possible use. This is not always done neatly, spreading more refuse in the streets. Finally yesterday, one of our full dustbin bags was removed (unfortunately not by the municipality), only to be dumped and spread on the nearest piece of vacant land, which of course will never be collected. I can understand that once in a blue moon, the rubbish collection might be delayed for a day or two. But the current situation, when it is the

norm and not the exception, seems to indicate bad management. I would love to see the municipality give the rate-payers some indication of a resolution of the problem. Die Harmony-woonbuurt is op Vrydag 25 September deur die moord van Birgit Human (52) geruk. Ao. Malebo Khosana sê een van die Human-egpaar se nabye familielede het die polisie na die toneel ontbied. Birgit se lyk is in die slaapkamer op die egpaar se bed gevind. Daar was geen sigbare beserings aan haar nie en sy is vermoedelik verwurg. Gert Human (51) is ook in die huis aangetref. Hy het erg gebloei en was vol steekwonde. Volgens Khosana dui die voorlopige ondersoek daarop dat Gert homself met ’n mes gesteek het. ’n Ambulans is na die huis ontbied en Gert is na die Mediclinic Welkom geneem waar hy vir steekwonde behandel is. Hy is op Dinsdag 29 September uit die hospitaal ontslaan. Gert is onmiddellik deur die polisie op ’n moordklag in hegtenis geneem. ’n Prokureur het ’n dringende borgtogaansoek in die Virginia-landdroshof gebring. Hy is, op voorwaarde dat hy sy paspoort inhandig, op borgtog van R5 000 vrygelaat. Gert verskyn weer op 21 Oktober in die hof. Die voorlopige polisie-ondersoek dui daarop dat Gert vermoedelik sy vrou tydens

Miner’s wages now higher

Bedsere in hospitaal ontstel Molly Green NÁ ’n ongeluk op sy vierwielmotorfiets het Jacques le Roux (47) van Welkom bedsere so groot soos pierings in die Pelonomi-hospitaal in Bloemfontein opgedoen. Hy is nou in die Bongani-hospitaal naby Welkom, maar sy ouers voel dié bedsere is weens nalatigheid van die Pelonomi-hospitaal.

Die ongeluk het op 9 September gebeur. Jacques is aanvanklik na die Bongani-hospitaal gebring vanwaar hy na die Pelonomi-hospitaal oorgeplaas is. Hy is later weer na Bongani oorgeplaas. Sy pa, Piet le Roux, sê sy seun was vir twee dae in ’n koma. “Hy registreer nog nie regtig nie. “Ek en my vrou, Anne,

THE Harmony Gold Mining Company Limited has reached a three-year wage agreement with the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), the United Association of South Africa (UASA) and Solidarity, effective from 1 July 2015. Increases range from 6% for miners, artisans and officials to 10,4% for category four employees. Graham Briggs, chief executive officer of Harmony commented: “Although it has been a protracted negotiation process, we have reached an agreement which ensures that we remain sustainable as a company and as an industry, while limiting job losses. “Thank you to the Chamber of Mines and each of the unions for negotiating a fair and reasonable wage increase.” The new increase will ensure that all category four to category eight employees and B-lower officials will immediately receive an increase of R600 per month, to be back-dated to 1 July, as well as a R100 per month increase in the living-out allowance in year one to be back-dated to 1 September. In addition, category four to category eight employees and B-lower officials will receive an annual increase of R625 per month as from 1 July, and another R650 as from 1 July 2017. Harmony has also agreed to incorporate the rock drill operators’ allowance of R400 into basic pay and other operators’ allowance of R250 will also be included in their basic rates. By the third year of the agreement, underground entry level employees will receive a total guaranteed wage of close to R14 000. Guaranteed pay excludes bonuses and includes basic pay, service increments, average overtime and allowances, as well as a 13th cheque, medical and retirement contributions. Regrettably, the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) has rejected the offers made by the company. Since an agreement has been reached with unions representing the majority of employees at Harmony, the agreement will be extended to all employees.

Brother and sister reunited after decades Molly Green FOR more than seven decades, Beatrice Hatch (78) from Welkom did not have any connections with her brothers and sisters in England. However, suddenly, a longlost brother from England, Ray Jeffery (70), contacted her, and brother and sister met for the first time in Riebeeckstad. Beatrice and Ray came from a big family. They have four brothers and sisters. During and after World War II, all of the children were put in foster homes. Beatrice is the mother of Beverley Emmenis and mother-in-law of the well-known Brian Emmenis. Beatrice and her husband, Allan Hatch, and their three children came to South Africa in 1966. Her husband worked for the Chamber of Mines. She divorced him 28 years ago. Ray lives in London, near Twickenham. His interest in his long-lost family was triggered when his granddaughter, Megan (14), had to do a project on family history. “As a young boy I was told that I came from a big family. “I did research on the internet. On Genes United I discovered that I have a sister, Beatrice (Puckey), in Africa. “I contacted the Salvation Army, who helped me trace her.” He also made contact with other brothers and sisters

Boere warm oor belasting GOUDVELDSE boere het op Dinsdag 29 September met verteenwoordigers van die Matjhabeng-munisipaliteit oor probleme met grondbelasting vergader. ’n Uitlating wat ’n munisipale amptenaar in ’n radio-onderhoud gemaak het, het boere warm onder die kraag gehad. In dié onderhoud is boere as wanbetalers uitgesonder. Jimmy Kemp, voorsitter van Vrystaat Landbou (VL) van die Matjhabeng-gebied, het die uitlating skerp veroordeel. Saint Sejake, inkomstebestuurder van die raad, en die finansiële hoof, Thabiso Tsoaeli, het 30 verteenwoordigers van plaaslike landbouverenigings ontmoet.

Amari hou makiti DIE Amariskool hou op Saterdag 31 Oktober Amarimakiti by die skool. Dié dag begin reeds om 07:00 en hou tot 13:00 aan. Die program sluit ’n 2 kmpretstap, ’n 6 km-veldwedloop en boeresport in. Spanne van vyf persone kan hulle teen R100 per span inskryf. Daar is lekker pryse op die spel. Kemp het gevra boere moet toegelaat word om afbetalingsreëlings te tref. Hulle moet ook korting kry wanneer hulle die volle agterstallige belasting betaal. Tsoaeli het beloof die raad sal na maniere kyk om boere tegemoet te kom. Mense sal aangestel word wat hulle sal toespits op die

boere se probleme. Boere het ook hul ontevredenheid uitgespreek oor grondbelasting wat vir die volgende vier jaar skerp verhoog is. Op sommige plase in die gebied moet boere 25% meer as in die vorige siklus betaal. Dié stygings is ver bokant die inflasiekoers. ’n Amptelike versoek is aan Tsoaeli gerig om boere tegemoet te kom. Boere ontvang nie enige dienste van die munisipaliteit nie en skraap meestal self die sekondêre paaie. Boere kan ook nie op die raad se sukkelende brandweerdienste staatmaak nie. Besware oor die nuwe grondwaardasies kan steeds ingedien word.

After 8 years of successfully combatting crime and assisting the community with personal problems, we have decided to re-evaluate the services of the “Watch” as we know it. If a viable solution is not found, the services of the “Watch” will be terminated. This decision was taken as a result of the decreasing number of members causing the “Watch” not to be nancially viable anymore. At the meeting we would consider any viable proposals from members and non-members.We are also inviting LG Management and SAPS members to attend. The more community members that attend, the better. The importance of attending this meeting by all residents of Doorn North cannot be stressed enough. Not attending this meeting means that all viable options will not be discussed and ultimately lead to the end of the “Watch”. The crime levels will return to what they were before the “Watch” was started 8 years ago. Residents must decided how important the safety of their families are to them. We plead with you not to take this lightly!! The only reason our crime rate is low in comparison with other residential areas is because of the “Watch” which works with LG and SAPS. Early detection key, says RSSA THE Radiological Society of South Africa (RSSA) and Breast Imaging Society of South Africa (BISSA) are encouraging all women to start regular mammography screening for early detection of breast cancer. This call is in line with the Breast Health Awareness Month running during October aimed at creating awareness. According to findings by the World Cancer Research Fund, breast cancer is the most prevalent form of cancer in women with statistics showing that 1 in 29 South African women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. This figure is even higher in urban communities in South Africa, where the incidence is as high as 1 in 8. However, more women are surviving breast cancer than 20 years ago, thanks to a combination of advanced medical treatment and, most importantly of all, early diagnosis. “Early diagnosis gives the cancer patient a higher chance of complete cure and less extensive surgery. We encourage all women to start regular mammography from the age of 40, regardless of whether they have symptoms or an abnormali-

ty – early detection is the key objective,” said Dr Sheldon Godinho, president of the RSSA. Mammographies and breast MRIs are the only recognised imaging screening tools for breast cancer and multinational, multicentre trials have shown a reduction in the death rate from breast cancer in women who are regularly screened, due to the early detection of breast cancer. Who is at risk? Every woman is potentially at risk of getting breast cancer. However, there are certain factors that would put women in a higher risk category. These risk factors include: Age – The risk of developing breast cancer increases as you get older. About 1 out of 8 invasive breast cancers are found in women younger than 45, while about 2 of 3 invasive breast cancers are found in women aged 55 or older. Family history – Breast cancer risk is higher among women whose close blood relatives have the disease. Having one first-degree relative (mother, sister or daughter) with breast cancer doubles a woman’s risk. Having two first-degree relatives increases her risk

about three-fold. Personal history – A woman with cancer in one breast has a three to four times increased risk of developing a new cancer in the other breast or in another part of the same breast. This is different from a recurrence (return) of the first cancer. Dense breast tissue – Women with denser breast tissue (as seen on a mammogram) have more glandular tissue and less fatty tissue, and have a higher risk of breast cancer. Unfortunately, dense breast tissue can also make it harder for doctors to spot problems on mammograms. Overweight or obese women: Research has shown that being overweight or obese increases the risk of breast and other cancers. Now, a study suggests that overweight and obese women diagnosed with early-stage, hormone-receptor-positive breast cancer have a higher risk of recurrence and are less likely to survive the disease. Lifestyle factors – excessive alcohol use, little to no physical activity, smoking and diets high in saturated fats increase the risk of breast cancer.

Watch meeting called AFTER eight years of successfully combating crime it has been decided that the service of the Doorn North Neighbourhood Watch will be re-evaluated. “If a viable solution is not found, the service of the watch will be terminated. This decision was made as a result of the decreasing number of members, causing the watch not to be financially viable anymore,” says Roy van Deemter, chairman of the watch. A meeting to discuss the future of the neighbourhood watch will be held on 27 October at the Welkom Volkskool. The meeting

will start at 18:00. “At the meeting, we would consider any viable proposals from members and non-members. We are also inviting LG management and police members to attend. “Every community member is urged to attend the meeting, as the importance of the attendance of the meeting by all residents of Doorn North cannot be stressed enough. “Not attending this meeting means that all viable options will not be discussed and ultimately lead to the end of the watch,” says Van Deemter.

Celebrates Heritage Day

Nacosa is an organisation situated in Cape Town that aims to turn the tide against HIV, Aids and TB by establishing partnerships with various existing organisations. It recently took hands with House of Hope. As a result of this newfound partnership, House of Hope has been enabled to place ten carers in the field, who will support and aid orphaned and vulnerable children, starting in the Bedelia community and hopefully expanding to the rest of Welkom. Support will be offered to

various families with regard to gaining access to required social and health services. In addition, community dialogues, circles of support for carers and discussion groups with young people on various topics such as finances and teenage pregnancy will be held. Once again, House of Hope does not believe in going about this task alone. The cooperation of schools and the community members of Bedelia and Welkom will be of great help. Sizanani Project reaches out THIRD-YEAR STUDENTS at the Free State School of Nursing’s Welkom Campus have launched a community outreach project in aid of the Thembekile Public School and destitute learners. It is called the Sizanani Project, meaning helping each other. Through this project the students collect school uniforms that include shoes for learners and essential material to improve the conditions of classrooms at the school. The initiative will culminate in a presentation of uniforms to learners on 5 November at the school. Project co-ordinator, Nothemba Majolo, says they are appealing to former learners of the school and to the public in general to help end the cycle of destitution facing both the learners and the school. “The learners and teachers are using dilapidated classrooms which are not adequately equipped and which are not conducive to learning. Drama op die silwerskerm DIE bekroonde rolprentmaker Regardt van den Bergh, bekend vir rolprente soos Faith like Potatoes, Klein Karoo en vele ander, gaan weer tot gehore se hart spreek met die uitreiking van ’n splinternuwe fliek uit sy pen, getiteld Uitvlucht, wat in Augustus op die kykNETsilwerskermfees in Kampsbaai première. Uitvlucht is ’n drama en vertel die storie van Anna (Clara Joubert van den Bergh), ’n behoudende middelklas-vrou wat in ’n buite-egtelike verhouding alles verloor wat saak maak in haar lewe. In haar gebrokenheid kry sy werk op ’n plaasskooltjie met die naam Uitvlucht. Soos wat sy die blik wurms waarmee sy gekonfronteer word stelselmatig uitpluis, begin haar eie heling plaasvind en leer sy om haarself te vergewe, en te begin aanvaar dat iemand haar dalk weer sal liefhê. Met die ondersteuning van die ander onderwysers en Dok (Stian Bam), ’n sagte, vriendskaplike boer wat die Uitvlucht-skool besoek en Anna bevriend, vind sy die moed om haarself en die mense rondom haar weer op te bou. Behalwe haar eie dilemma moet sy skielik handel met skoolouers se drankmisbruik, kinders wat gemolesteer word en ongenaakbare mense, wat geen ontsag het vir hul eie lot nie. Dit is ’n storie van hoop in ’n hopelose situasie, genade in desperaatheid, en van liefde wat alles oorwin. Die rolverdeling sluit in Clara Joubert van den Bergh (Anna), Stian Bam (Dok), Margot Luyt (Hetta), Carel Trichardt (Joshua), Jill Levenberg (San), Oscar Petersen (Pieta) en Clyde Berning (Willie). Rush to Bloem AMERICAN singer Jennifer Rush, best known for her million-selling single The Power of Love, will perform in the Sand Du Plessis Theatre in Bloemfontein on Friday (09/10) and Saturday (10/10). The iconic singer’s performance is part of her tour to celebrate a milestone of 30 years in the music industry. Talented barefoot runners impress Teboho Setena A BUDDING pair of athletes, Seipati (8) and Mpho (9) Raletjena, are living proof that there are great rewards when you are willing to work hard. Running barefoot, the talented girls have established themselves as reputable winners in crosscountry championships. While many thought only Zola Budd-Pieterse, middle-distance and long-distance runner, set a trend running barefoot, a new breed of barefoot runner has arrived in the form of these two girls. Seipati and Mpho are waiting in the wings to take over from the legendary Free State-born Zola. Zola competed at the 1984 Olympic Games for Great Britain and the 1992 Olympic Games for South Africa, both times in the 3 000 m. The two budding middle distance runners’ determination shows that they can indeed follow in Zola’s footsteps. The two girls are orphans and attend the Boitekong Public School in Meloding, Virginia. Seipati is in gr. 3 and Mpho in gr. 4. They have not allowed their difficult background deprive them of the opportunity to showcase their God-given talent, however. They are recognised locally as “the barefoot runners”, and have proven that they are up for the challenge to run barefoot and win competitions. The Raletjena girls’ bravery to run barefoot in competitions distinguishes them from their peers in the field of athletics. Dinah Matekoane, mentor of the two girls, said the courage of the two youngsters amazed her. “They are first-time competitors, yet they perform like seasoned runners. They even outperform their experienced peers. It is very surprising X I did not anticipate this,” said Matekoane, who is also a teacher at the Boitekong School. A part-time runner herself, Matekoane said that she discovered the two girls during trials which were held at the school in March this year. “The two girls are rare gems. Despite the fact that they got sponsorships for running shoes from the Harmony Mine in the hope to relief their burden, they prefer to compete running barefoot. Their poor family background is not in any way an obstacle. I always get emotional when thinking about their family situation and their performance in sport. It is such a contrast,” said Matekoane. Seipati competes in the 1 km event and Mpho in the 2 km. The rewards of enduring the pain to run barefoot have seen them ascend podiums to collect quite a few medals. At the South African cross-country championship’s Free State leg, staged in Bloemfontein, Seipati scooped up a bronze

Steadily rising to greater heights, the two girls did exceptionally well during the Goldfields cross-country league event. Seipati won the Goldfields cross-country championship with Mpho also finishing near the top. Also in the habit of running barefoot is Thabo Mangoejane, who competes in the 3 km. He finished in position 11 at the South African cross-country national final.

Classic engines will roar at Phakisa THE Midas Historic Tour, consisting of model cars from the 1960s, 1970s and early 1980s, will return to the Phakisa Freeway to burn rubber in the quest for Round 6 of the championship on Saturday (10/10). There are two more rounds in the championship. The categories include the Lotus Challenge, which, with a field of nearly 30 cars, is expected to conclude in the next round. With some still not close to finalising the race, the competition is expected to be fast and furious, as every point counts. The Pre-’79 Saloons is not yet done and dusted, and the competitors are expected to shift

into top gear as they vie for every possible top spot in their two races on the day. Entries are from the following categories: Marlboro Crane Hire Pre-’79 Saloons, Pre-’66 Sports & GT Cars, Pre-’84 Sports & GT Cars, Marque Cars, SKF Pre-’66 Legends and Little Giants, Investchem Formula Ford Kent, SABAT Lotus Challenge, ISP, Trans-AM and Classic Thoroughbreds. The day is sure to be filled with action. The types of cars that will be racing are varied and everyone is optimistic to find an old favourite in the line-up X Fords, Datsuns, Mercedes-Benzes, Alfas and

Porsches. The single-seater Formula Ford Kents and the Lotus 7s are also crowd pleasers. The drivers from all categories are always happy to discuss their cars with spectators, affording them a chance to learn more about the vehicles. The day ends with a Liqui Moly Endurance Race which is always exciting to watch, as upwards of 20 cars battle it out on the track for an hour. Paddock and Pitlane tickets are available at R50 for adults. The public area (outside on grand stands and embankments) is free. Members of the public are welcome to bring their family for this fun-filled racing occasion.

There will be a fleet of different classic cars to watch at the Phakisa Race Course on Saturday.
