Two brutally shot THE front area of the house where the gruesome killings took place in Extension 15, near Bronville. Teboho Setena ANOTHER gruesome murder of two family members in Extension 15, a new residence adjacent to Bronville in Welkom, has caused panic and outrage in the community. Two family members, Teboho and Thato Dintsha, including a friend, became the latest victims of four trigger-happy gunmen who left a trail of blood, trauma and damage in their wake. The gunmen instantly shot and killed Teboho and Thato in the house in Extension 15, last Friday (16/10). Numerous traces of bullets on the kitchen floor and wall of the lounge depict the gruesome killing on the day. Sgt Mamello Mokhuoane, Thabong police spokesperson, said the deceased had been attacked at about 19:00. She said the assailants were still on the run and urged the public’s assistance in tracing them. “A case of two counts of murder and one case of attempted murder have been

registered at the Bronville police for further investigation,” said Mokhuoane. She said the motive for the killings was unknown. Mokhuoane said the gunmen stormed into the house, shot Teboho (owner of the house) six times in the head. They thereafter fired shots at his sister, Thato, and at Teboho’s girlfriend. Teboho’s girlfriend survived the onslaught and is still fighting for her life in hospital. In the event, Thato tried to flee, but the heartless gunmen killed her by firing at her again. Mokhuoane said Thato’s body had been found in the middle of the street by on-duty police members. She was surrounded by shocked members of the community. A grief-stricken Wali Dintsha, brother of the two deceased, said the family was shocked by the brutal incident. Teboho, who worked in Rustenburg in North-West, came home for a brief holiday. “Both Teboho and Thato were not troublesome people. They were not mixing with friends who would raise suspicions of wrongdoing. Thato was a dedicated church-

goer. We are seeking answers as to why they were killed,” said Wali. He said he was watching a programme on television in the time slot 18:30 to 19:00, when he received a phone call notifying him about the shooting. Shocked neighbours told Vista that the gunmen had fired shots randomly outside to scare off any potential eyewitnesses. “My daughter who was in the bathroom alerted me of the shooting. However, we could not go outside to investigate because we heard gunshots. Most residents came out to inspect when it was quiet and when the police were present. It is very scary around here because there are no high-mast lights. It is easy for criminals to kill and disappear,” said one of the residents, who did not want to be identified. The trio were seemingly also watching television and were about to have dinner when the attackers stormed in and opened fire. Another witness who was at the scene, said fresh food, partly mixed with blood, had been found on the kitchen floor where

Teboho Setena THE Virginia (Harmony) Sports Academy, the most successful sports academy in the Free State, is set to close for good at the end of December. The academy’s board announced it has decided to completely close the facility, leaving staff and children on the academy’s programme out in the cold. The institution began operating 12 years ago, nurturing football and rugby players. Currently there are 36 football and 20 rugby players. Estelle Cilliers, director on the board of the Virginia Sports Academy, says because of financial constraints the board is unable to keep the academy running. According to Cilliers, the academy was registered as a Section-21 company, depending on sponsorships from private entities. She said Harmony Gold Mine has been the main sponsor over the years. “Running costs have continued to escalate and the board finds it difficult to sustain the project without funding. “In the last financial year (July 2014 to June 2015) expenditure reached R9,2 million. “It costs R100 000 in bursaries per child.

The bursary covers food, transport and school fees,” said Cilliers. She said the academy was somehow not benefiting the region as the majority of the children were from outside the region. Cilliers said most employees were on fixed contracts. The facility remains the property of Harmony Gold Mine. Parents, whose children are enrolled at the academy, are dismayed at the timing of the announcement to shut-down. “We are very concerned as parents. Timing is bad. “There is not enough time to research other schools for a possible transfer and to send out applications for the new term. “This places all children in the higher grades, including those who will be in gr. 12 next year, in a predicament. “We only learned about the closure of the academy three weeks ago, when children came home for the holiday with letters notifying us that the academy will close for good at the end of this year,” said Ntsoaki Thoabala, one of the parents. The children at the academy attend school at Harmony High School in Virginia and Goudveld High School in Welkom. Thoabala said parents are exploring other avenues to address the matter.

Proud of culture THE Virginia police cluster won this year’s edition of the Police Multicultural Festival. The cluster presented a display of Indian culture, beating the Thabong, Bronville and Meloding clusters. Themed Africa Unite, the event was held in Odendaalsrus on Friday (16/10). The event showcased, among other things, African flair, with participants singing and performing dance and traditional activities. The Local Criminal Record Centre and Crime Intelligence and Explosives Unit took second place with its display of the Afrikaans culture and Meloding reached the third spot with its display of the Swati culture. The Bronville cluster (Swati), and Thabong (Afrikaans) took the fourth and fifth spots respectively.

’n KERK wat hoofsaaklik met die verkoop van rommel gebou is, is ná sowat agt jaar in Thabong voltooi. Vir past. Elias Bingwa (60) en sy vrou, Maria (56), is dit ’n droom wat bewaarheid is. Die Apostolic Faith Church is netjies en het plek vir meer as 100 lidmate. Al wat nog kortkom, is stoele en ’n paar deure. Sedert 2007 was geen afvalmateriaal soos glas, blik, plastiek of boustene veilig in die omgewing van Maria en haar helpers nie. Met geld wat met die verkoop van dié rommel ingesamel is, is die kerk stuk-stuk gebou. Maria self is nie bang vir werk nie. Sy het onder meer self die plaveisel gelê en het mosaïekkuns op die buitemure aangebring. Sy en haar helpers samel nog steeds rommel in. “Binne vyf jaar wil ons ’n kerksaal bou,” sê sy. Die perseel en murasie van ’n ou kerkgebou is in 2007 vir R45 000 gekoop en herstel. Die mure is gepleister, vensterrame is ingesit en ’n nuwe dak is opgesit. ’n Gemeentelid gaan ’n nuwe preekstoel bou.

In Vista (8/10) se uitgawe was daar die opskrif “Nog ’n bejaarde vermoor”. Wanneer gaan die misdadigers stop om ons bejaardes te vermoor? Hierdie dinge gebeur in Welkom en Virginia. Ek wonder hoe die misdadigers in hul hart voel nadat hulle ’n bejaarde vermoor het. Is hulle trots en gelukkig dat hulle die bejaardes leed aangedoen het? Nelson Mandela het nadat hy uit die gevangenis vrygelaat is, boodskappe van versoening en vrede gespreek. Hy het nooit enige persoon opdrag gegee om te moor nie. Mandela het in teendeel vir ’n reënboognasie gepleit wat as een sterk nasie kan saamstaan. Wanneer ons die televisie aanskakel om nuus te kyk, hoor ons dieselfde: “nog”. Nog polisielede is vermoor, nog bejaardes is vermoor. Hoekom? God se toorn sal oor hierdie

Die enigste manier om ons bejaardes te help en te beskerm is om buurtwagte aan te stel. Help die regering om regverdig te wees in sy strewe om Suid-Afrika ’n vooruitstrewende land te maak, waarin almal in vrede kan saamleef.

THE corruption and money laundering trial involving the 21 fired police officers in Welkom continues in the Welkom Regional Court on Thursday (22/10) with the court appearance of Const. Tshidiso Rampoporo and Samuel Moeti, a civilian. Their appearance follows that of Hendrik Djalivani on Thursday (15/10). He held the position of warrant officer at the Bronville

Former cops in court Police Station. The fourth hearing in the same court, from 27 to 29 October, is against former messenger David Mahlalela and Const. Daniel Mpholo, as well as December Mosia and two suspects.

The hearings to be held separately in November are those involving Joseph Mbena (2 November), Samuel Monyaki (10 November) and Sebolai Molete (12 November).

It comes in the wake of the sentencing of Rahab Letsie (47), Kedibone Elsie Dlamini (34) and Johannes Macala (34) on 1 October. They were each sentenced to an effective 15 years in prison after being convicted on charges of theft, corruption, defeating the ends of justice, the possession of gold-bearing material and transporting gold-bearing material.

BOERE, hul werkers en ander plaasbewoners het nou die gemoedsrus dat ’n nuwe organisasie gestig is om te help met landelike beveiliging. Fundum Veiligheid, ’n nuwe projek wat bestaande veiligheidstrukture in landelike gebiede saamsnoer, gaan ook baie nou met die polisie saamwerk, sê een van die stigterslede, Ben Meintjes. Fundum Veiligheid se oogmerk is om pro- en reaktief op te tree om landelike gemeenskappe te beveilig. Fundum is die Latynse woord vir plaas. Die diens sal uit drie afdelings bestaan. Die eerste been, landbouveiligheid, word deur Hennie Gerber gelei. Gerber is al 25 jaar lank betrokke by die verkryging van inligting in die Vrystaat en het ’n goeie suksessyfer in die oplossing van plaasmoorde. Ben Meintjes is die koördineerder van Arma Iuris Regsdienste. Arma Iuris sal boere bystaan wanneer hulle regsadvies nodig het en ook seker maak verklarings oor misdade op plase word reg afgelê sodat dit in die hof tot ’n skuldigbevinding kan lei.

neer binne die raamwerk van die wet en vat hande met die polisie om misdaad te bekamp. Hulle maak op korporatiewe borgskappe staat en boere betaal vir regsdienste. TEN young scientists from the Goldfields represented the region at the 35th Eskom Expo International Science Fair (ISF) that was held during the October school holiday. All nine projects entered, were awarded. The Goldfields walked away with one gold, six silver and three bronze medals. “It seems that our region raised the standard; we didn’t receive anything below bronze like last year,” said the chairperson of the Goldfields Eskom Expo for Young Scientists, Anina Nel. Junior Bancram of the Welkom High School, was a gold medallist and also a recipient of a cash prize. Donatien Welthagen, a silver medallist from the Sentrale Volkskool in Kroonstad, was a junior winner. After their hard work at the Regional Science Fair, the Goldfields learners had to work really hard to get their projects ready for the showdown in Boksburg. Nel said the number of Goldfields participants were restricted this year. She said the ten learners never stood back for any of the other regions, as the quality of their work and the scientific method of their projects were evident of their positive approach. The three-day annual Eskom Expo saw 574 young scientists from across South Africa and other countries present their projects to be examined by seasoned judges and experts. The Eskom Expo presents a platform for the youngsters to showcase their talents and to encourage them to pursue careers in the field of science, technology, engineering, mathematics and innovation (Stemi). It also teaches learners internationally benchmarked scientific methods, their importance and the application thereof required at university level. By actively encouraging young people to pursue Stemi careers, Eskom aims to address the country’s shortage of skills in the fields of science and engineering. Jorien Helm led the delegation and Christiaan Schoonraad and Alistair Smart represented the region as part of the judging team at the Science Fair. Helm and Nel were responsible for the young Goldfields scientists at the international fair. Dignitaries at the awards included the deputy director-general for Human Capital and Knowledge Systems at the Department of Science and Technology, Dr Thomas Auf der Heyde, the Eskom board chairman, Dr Ben Ngubane, the group executive of Eskom, deans from various universities as well as senior managers from the Eskom Expo. This year’s ISF was concluded with an awards ceremony on Friday (09/10) at the Birchwood Hotel and Conference Centre in Ekurhuleni. ) The silver medal winners from the Goldfields are Fatima Hajat (Harmonie Primary School), Tiang Kgotule (WelkomGimnasium), Thabo Sehlabo (Welkom High School), Donatien Welthagen (Sentrale Volkskool in Kroonstad), Reitumetse Kholumo (Welkom-Gimnasium) and Arsheen Ahmed (St Andrews). The bronze medal winners are Halleluya Sarero (Welkom-Gimnasium), Thabo Mayake (Hentie Cilliers High School) and Tlotliso Skalk (Lephola Secondary School).

Ceremony celebrates memories THE release of helium balloons, lights and messages to loved ones will honour those who have died, and set the tone for a very special night, that can be enjoyed by young and old alike On Saturday, 7 November, the people of the Goldfields can once again remember their loved ones, by pledging a light on the Hospice Tree of Memories. “During 2015, the Hospice provided care to approximately 550 patients and orphans monthly, and experienced the loss of 38 patients. We would like to

fondly remember them all and show our support to their families during our Tree of Memories ceremony. “This annual event is well supported, and everybody can join us for an enjoyable evening,” said Marli Young, general manager of the Goldfields Hospice. Support Charity Beer Fest ONE of the main Round Table 40 projects for the year is the annual Charity Beer Fest, that will take place on 31 October. The Charity Beer Fest started in 2013 and after three years it became clear that the festival is growing each year. The Beer Fest is hosted at the Clubhouse, 421 Stateway. “We envisage this project to grow bigger in the years to come, to the extent that we will host it at a much bigger venue. “We try to keep our Beer Fest theme uniquely South African and not to imitate the traditional German Beer Fests. Car thief jailed after escape A CONVICTED car thief, Rantibo Joseph Letsie, also known as Sanku, has been recaptured after escaping from custody in August. Capt. Stephen Thakeng, Welkom police spokesperson, said the suspect had been recaptured in Odendaalsrus on Sunday (18/10) after the police had received a tip-off. He said a charge of escaping from custody had been added to the four counts of theft of motor vehicles Letsie was facing. Letsie escaped from custody in August during his appearance with a co-accused for a bail hearing in the Welkom Magistrate’s Court. He said the two suspects were facing charges of theft of three motor vehicles. Thakeng said Letsie had been denied bail, while his co-accused had been granted bail of R2 000. Following foul play, Letsie escaped from custody with his 61-year-old mother who helped him to escape.

RANTIBO JOSEPH LETSIE, also known as Sanku, is wanted for the theft of motor vehicles. During the court appearance, Letsie also camouflaged himself as his co-accused and thereby bail was granted to him while the co-accused remained in custody. Thakeng said Letsie’s mother was facing a charge of aiding her son to escape. The suspects are expected back in the dock soon to face charges instituted against them.

Wilson said the type of wagon was a new model designed by Aveng Rail. He said one unit of the wagon was 18 m in length and would weigh 40 tons when completed. OM ’n maatskaplike werker by Engo, voorheen die Kerklike Maatskaplike Dienste (KMD), te wees, is nie ’n werk nie. Dis ’n passie. ’n Bediening. Só sê twee gesoute maatskaplike werkers, Mariana Fourie en Dionette Jacobs van Welkom. Albei tree vroeg in 2016 af. En hulle aftrede gaan ’n groot leemte skep. Albei dié vroue het deur die jare na onder meer die belange van ’n paar duisend weeskinders omgesien. Hulle het gehelp om talle kinders in pleegsorg te plaas, toegesien dat hulle skool toe gaan én sukses behaal. Elke kind moet kwartaalliks hul skoolrapporte vir dié twee kom wys. Soms was daar tot ’n duisend kinders op een slag in hul sorg. Mariana het in 1993 by die destydse KMD begin werk, terwyl Dionette op 1 Mei 2000 daar ingeval het. Albei het hoofsaaklik in Welkom, Thabong en Bronville gewerk. “Vir my gaan dit daaroor dat elke mens ’n skepsel van God is. Soms moet jy sag wees, andersins moet jy streng optree,” sê Mariana. Sy sê hulle het geseënde jare gehad. “Die werk is die moeite werd. Dit was wonderlik om te sien dat van die kinders universiteit toe is. “Ons is deur storms en daar was baie uitdagings.” Dionette sê sy het dié beroep gekies om te kan dien en te bedien. “Geld is nie hoog op ons voorkeurlys nie en met die hulp van vrywilligers het ons wonderwerke sien gebeur.” Dié twee vroue is dit eens dat dit volgende jaar die regte tyd is om af te tree. “Ons ondersteun mekaar. Daar is soms ironie, maar ook baie humor,” sê Dionette. Mariana het tans 327 kinders na wie se belange sy omsien en Dionette sowat 80. Dit gaan soms moeilik, want Engo ontvang nie baie skenkings nie. Jeugsorgsentrums is verlengstukke van Engo.

Back to basics at municipality ON Friday (16/10) the employees of the Lejweleputswa District Municipality set aside time to clean their premises. The project also promoted cohesion among staff members. Em ployees formed groups to make it easy for everybody to participate freely in the project. Other topics to be discussed are silence in the demeanour of the victim of sexual abuse, and behaviour to look out for when children are around adults that could possibly point to molestation. THE one-act British comedy Hell and High Water, produced by Amdram Productions, promises to be a side-splitting theatre experience. The lord of Summerville Manor, an ex-admiral in the British Royal Navy, refuses to break 17 years of tradition and insists that the family sit down to dinner, even though circumstances are hardly normal in the manor, due to a rather serious plumbing problem. The production takes to the stage in the Ernest Oppenheimer Theatre on 5, 6 and 7 November at 19:00. Lisa releases gospel album Teboho Setena

AIM TO REMOVE BARRIERS: The Free State Council on Aids, in partnership with the Free State Department of Health in the Lejweleputswa District, launched the Lesbians, Gays, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex (LGBTI) structure, which also targets sex workers. Representatives of the role-players are, from the left Tefo Tabi (secretariat Provincial Council on Aids), Papi Mohloki (acting primary health care manager in the Lejweleputswa District) and Benjy Malgas (member and coordinator of LGBTI). This sector responds to and addresses the first critical preventative objective of the Provincial HIV and Aids/STI/TB Strategic Plan: Removing structural drivers and barriers to the HIV epidemic.

LOCAL gospel singer Lisa, real name Nombuyiselo Nziweni-Motsamai, will launch her newly released album in the Ernest Oppenheimer Theatre in Welkom on Saturday, 31 October. At the same event, the DVD of her latest 12-track album, Lala Honna, will also be produced. It is her second album, following her debut, Hold Me, released in 2013. Lisa believes the latest album has much to offer, given the amount of work done and the artists she has worked with. “We had time to work on the new album and it is uplifting. I had time to pray that it is a success,” said Lisa. She believes she has succeeded in defining her music talent in this album. The album also contains selfcomposed songs in addition to hymns.

She worked with Molato Motsamai as the producer, Bheki Zulu as the engineer, Thabang Souls on keyboard and backing vocal, as well as Palesa Monareng. Lisa said she was able to sign a deal with a company to market the album. She said about 1 000 copies have already been sold since the release of the album. This is a special show as Lisa will share the stage with well-known gospel artist, Hlengiwe Mhlaba. Local artists billed for the show include Kelebogile Moholo, Biki Mafabatho, Atalia Tlake, Karabo Seitheso, Matokelo Mosweu and Thabang Kuka, as well as the group Immortal Voices. Tickets are available at the Oppenheimer Theatre or Computicket at R150 (general seating) and R300 for VIPs (CD and refreshments included).

Crime prevention campaign THE Department of Correctional Services (DCS) in Hoopstad, through its social reintegration, has thrown its weight behind the crime prevention drive by supporting an outreach campaign. The campaign was an initiative organised by the Department of Social Development and the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa). The launch took place last month at the Malebogo Community Hall in Hertzogville. Different departments participated,

each one making a presentation about services and responsibilities. Amongst the stakeholders were the South African Police Service (SAPS), the departments of Education, Health, Labour, Agriculture, Human Settlements, Justice, Home Affairs and the Lejweleputswa District Municipality. Dirkie Kotze and Shadrack Khunou represented the DCS. Kotze said the significance of being part of crime prevention, is that it raises awareness of and combating crime in the community.

Teams battle it out Teboho Setena LOCAL football outfit Sibanye Golden Stars are vying for a spot in the last-32 stage of this year’s Nedbank Cup tournament. The Goldfields-based side is one of the top four clubs in the Free State second division through to the provincial semi-final of the tournament which is regarded as South Africa’s premier championship. The prestigious competition features teams campaigning in the amateur and professional rank. Stars will compete against three provincial clubs, Manco Milan (Sasolburg), Super Eagles (Bethlehem) and Mangaung Unite (Bloemfontein), for a place in the last-32 of the Nedbank Cup tournament. The four teams, which include Stars, also campaign in the second division, ABC Motsepe League. The four teams are scheduled to meet in Bloemfontein on Saturday (24/10) to battle it out to secure a spot in the last-32 of the prestigious Nedbank Cup. Stars, the only team from the Goldfields region, have been paired against the Eagles and Milan against

Mangaung in the semi-final. The opening fixture of the semi-final is between Milan and Mangaung at 10:00, followed by the Stars against Eagles encounter at 12:00. The overall winner automatically progresses to the final to decide the Free State winner to go through to the last-32 stage of the football competition. The four teams qualified for the provincial semi-final by virtue of winning their preliminary matches played earlier this month in Bloemfontein, QwaQwa and Virginia. Stars outclassed the Central University of Technology (CUT) Free State 3-1 while Eagles saw off Maluti 3-2. Milan outgunned Shamrock Flowers and Harmony 2-1 respectively to reach this stage of the tournament. Meanwhile, the third division playoffs of the Nedbank Cup will see the Virginia Sports Academy take on Mighty Wits, winner of Thabo Mofutsanyana on Sunday. The match will be played at the Seneca Stadium at 15:00. The winner will automatically go through to the next leg of the tournament.

THE Virginia Sports Academy’s (Harmony) football boys have proven that they have what it takes. The team obtained the fourth position overall in this year’s Engen u.17 Knockout Challenge Nationals, dubbed the Champs of Champs. The national final was staged at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville, Pretoria, from 9 to 11 October. It was the culmination of a series of tournaments staged at selective provinces, namely Gauteng, Free State, KwaZuluNatal, Western Cape and Eastern Cape. The series of provincial events produced six champion teams who then progressed to compete for the Champs of Champs national crown. The Free Staters were the only outsiders and also not part of an established club in the Premier Soccer League (PSL). Despite losing most of their games in the group stages, they made it through to the semi-final due to a better goal difference. The Free State boys’ sole win was 3-2 against AmaZulu in the group stages. In the semi-final, they lost 0-5 to Ajax Cape Town, the new champions for 2015. They also lost 0-1 to Sundowns for the third and the fourth place. Pitso Mokoena, the head coach of the Virginia Sports Academy, said he was not overly concerned with his team not winning anything. Mokoena said the competition was a learning curve to further nurture the players to reach their full potential in the time to come.
