Duimspyker eis seun

Veroorsaak bloeding in long drie jaar nadat hy dit ingesluk het Molly Green

MEER as drie jaar nadat ’n tiener per ongeluk ’n duimspyker ingesluk het, het die spyker bloeding in sy long veroorsaak. Sy long is erg beskadig en dit het hom sy lewe gekos. Willem van Wyk (16), ’n leerling van die Goudveld-Hoërskool in Welkom, was in 2012 op ’n veldkamp by Sandra in Mpumalanga. Hy het die duimpyker in sy mond gehad. Toe ’n meisie hom met ’n bal gooi, het hy dit per ongeluk ingesluk. “Hy het ons niks daarvan gesê nie. Hy het blykbaar gedink die spyker sal vanself sy pad uit sy liggaam vind,” sê sy hartseer ma, Bettie Cordier (33). In Maart vanjaar het Willem siek geword. “Dit het gelyk of hy doodgaan. Ons het hom na die Bongani-hospitaal toe gevat waar x-strale geneem is.” ’n Vreemde voorwerp is in sy regterlong opgemerk. Willem het toe eers vir sy ma van die duimspyker wat hy ingesluk het, vertel. Bettie sê ’n dokter het probeer om die duimspyker met behulp van ’n kamera in die waakeenheid uit te haal. Dit was reeds in sy long vasgegroei. In die teater is weer probeer om die duimspyker uit te kry, maar die operasie was nie ’n sukses nie. Hy was sewe uur in die teater. Op 2 April vanjaar is die seun na die Universitas-hospitaal in Bloemfontein oorgeplaas. Weer is probeer om die duimspyker uit te haal, maar sonder sukses. “Ek was die hele tyd by hom in die hospitaal. Ek het in die wagkamer geslaap. “Snags het hy opgestaan om te kyk of ek nog reg is. “Hy was so ’n liefdevolle kind. Altyd besorg oor almal.” Een van die dokters het gesê die duimspyker het aan die long vasgegroei. “Hy sal oud en grys word met die spyker in sy long. Die staat het nie geld vir so ’n duur operasie nie,” sê sy ma. Op 7 April is hy huis toe gestuur. Hy was op sterk antibiotika en is weer skool toe. Op 13 Augustus was hy grieperig. “Hy het skool ge-love. Hy het dikwels gesê: ‘Mamma dis die lekkerste skool waar ek nog was’.” Op 15 Augustus het hy in sy kamer gesit. Hy was baie stil.

Toe hy hoes, het die bloed uitgestroom. “Ek het dadelik geweet dit is die duimspyker.” Terwyl die gesin met Willem hospitaal toe gejaag het, het hy gesê: “Mamma ek is lief vir jou en Liewe Jesus, ek wil nie nou al doodgaan nie.” Willem is weer na die Universitas-hospitaal oorgeplaas. Daar was baie bloeding en hy het bloedoortappings ontvang. Bettie het vir drie maande by Marius en Doreen Jones in Bloemfontein gebly.

Hy was bang hy word nie weer wakker nie.” Op 19 Augustus het sy ma vir die laaste keer haar seun se stem gehoor toe hy gesê het: “Mamma ek is lief vir jou.” Daarna het hy ’n hartstilstand gehad en die dokters het vir ’n uur en ’n half gesukkel om sy hart weer aan die klop te kry. Willem was toe sowat vier weke in ’n koma. Op 6 Oktober het Bettie gehoor haar kind het breinskade. Op 7 Oktober moes sy hoor hy is breindood. “Ek verstaan dit nie. Hy het effens gereageer as ek met hom praat en hy kon

Ntsoaki Thoabala, a concerned parent, said they had requested an urgent meeting with the academy’s board to discuss the serious implications. She said as parents they would present their concerns to the board. The academy’s board abruptly announced at the end of September that it had decided to completely close the facility. Estelle Cilliers, director on the board of the academy, said because of dire financial constraints, the board had been unable to keep the academy running, hence the decision to shut it down at the end of this year. Hannes Peyper, the attorney representing the academy, could not be reached for comment at the time of going to press.

Parents in uproar THE Virginia (Harmony) Sports Academy’s board announcement about the facility shutting down has caused uproar among parents whose children are enrolled at the sporting institution. The concerned parents have reacted with dismay and have approached the board to come up with an alternative to the predicament. Vista reliably learnt that concerned parents have requested an urgent meeting with the academy’s board on Saturday (31/10) to discuss the future of the 56 children on the rugby and football programme of the academy. MEMBERS of the Virginia South African Po lice Service (SAPS) found copper cable dumped near the Vaalkrans Scrapyard in Virginia on Friday (23/10) at about 08:30. They were on their way to Thabong for a cluster operation when Sgt Malidtaba Mphuthi received a tipoff about people who were hiding stolen goods in the grass. They found three bags containing copper, estimated to be valued between R12 000 and R15 000. According to the Virginia SAPS station commander, Col Cynthia Mo lale, there is a problem with copper cable theft in Virginia. “We value information from our community members which helps us to fight this crime. Students disrupt building of hostel Teboho Setena A PROTEST over tuition fees led to nine students of the Welkom Campus of the Central University of Technology (CUT) appearing in court after the protest turned violent. The nine students, two women and seven men, appeared in the Welkom Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday (28/10), facing charges of contravening a court order. They were arrested by the Welkom Public Order Police (POP) unit for public violence last Friday (23/10). Capt. Stephen Thakeng, Welkom police spokesperson, said the nine students were released the same day of their arrest. They were released on warning instead of bail and were ordered to appear in court on Wednesday. He said the reason the students were released, was because they were due to start writing their examinations on Monday (26/10). The CUT Welkom Campus management reportedly obtained a court interdict against protesting students last week Friday, prohibiting them from disrupting the academic programme. This was done following the disruption of classes by students the previous day during a protest against the increase in tuition fees. The CUT Welkom Campus students’ protest against the increase (in line with the nationwide campaign dubbed, #Fees Must Fall), turned violent on the second

day when an unruly group caused havoc on and off the campus. A breakaway group of students confronted workers, forcing them to discontinue work on the building of the multi-million rand students’ hostel and lecturer apartments on the campus. The student leaders tried in vain to stop the breakaway group from disrupting the workers. The management of the construction company then decided to let the workers go home. This was followed by students threatening to

uproot the main entrance gate, after it was locked by on-duty security officers. In full-steam, while singing and shouting revolutionary slogans, the unruly group went on to barricade Mothusi Road, causing a traffic jam near the campus and the Bongani Regional Hospital. Motorists driving past the CUT Welkom campus were also intimidated in full view of on-duty police members. The POP tried to quell the violence by using teargas to disperse the unruly group who barricaded the main

road. Nine protesting students were arrested. Some students expressed dismay at the actions of the breakaway group who interfered with workers on the construction site. “We need this place to be ready for occupation by February next year. If it is not ready, the very same group will be rioting and blaming the management, forgetting they were responsible for the delay,” said one student who preferred not to be identified.

If student results can be withheld until they pay all their fees, then car and driver’s licences must be withheld until all toll fees are paid by users of toll roads. If government inefficiencies are cut drastically, then most user-paid fees in South Africa can be scrapped. Water and electricity could be cheaper and the free quota can be increased

Dié geld is die week in die rekening van die veearts inbetaal. Toe Maria de Wet, nuwe voorsitter van die DBV, vanjaar die leisels oorgeneem het, het sy met ’n

skuldlas van meer as R400 000 gesit. Die DBV skuld die veearts dr. Nic Meintjies ’n groot bedrag geld. Daarby is die vereniging agterstallig met sy munisipale rekening. “Ons kon nie dié maand die personeel se salarisse betaal nie. Ons het in Augustus ’n verlies gely van R15 000 en in September ’n verlies van R24 000. Ons het baie getroue personeel wat lang ure onder moeilike omstandighede werk.” Sy sê die komitee moet maandeliks R65 000 insamel om uitgawes te dek. “Ons is heeltemal van skenkings afhanklik. Ons beplan in November en Desember geldinsame-

lings, maar of dit betyds gaan wees of genoeg gaan wees om ons te help weet ek nie. “Ons het minimale skenkings gekry ná die twee vorige mediavrystellings. “Die publiek sal moet besef die DBV gaan toemaak indien dit so aangaan. Ons personeel sal sonder werk sit – dit is sewe werkers plus hul gesinne. “Die Goudveld se gemeenskap kan nie verwag dat die DBV ’n diens moet lewer en ons kry minimale geldelike ondersteuning nie. Mense is baie vinnig om inspekteurs te bel om diere te kom oplaai, maar besef hulle die koste daaraan verbonde?”

patients. We would like to fondly remember them all and show our support to their families during our Tree of Memories ceremony. This annual event is well supported, and everybody can join us for an enjoyable evening,” said Marli Young, general manager of the Goldfields Hospice. Residents help to catch drug dealers THE police in Welkom have swooped on two Nigerians in connection with drugs with an estimated street value of R28 000 on Wednesday (21/10). They busted the two suspects, aged 27 and 42, after reacting to a tip-off about drugs that were hidden in a Nigerian-owned business premises in Welkom’s central business district. Capt. Stephen Thakeng, the Welkom police spokesperson, said members of the Thabong Crime Intelligence and the Welkom K9

unit, discovered the highly addictive drug CAT after thoroughly searching the business premises with the help of a sniffer dog. Earlier this month, another Nigerian man was nabbed in Riebeeckstad. Thakeng said the suspect was caught red-handed while he was busy manufacturing drugs. The value of the drugs discovered in the room used by the suspect as a crack laboratory, was estimated at R500 000. He said several ingre-

dients that can be used to manufacture more drugs, were also found. The three suspects face charges of possession of drugs. They appeared separately in the Welkom Magistrate’s Court. “This is a breakthrough as the drugs would definitely have landed in the hands of our youth. “We would like to applaud the residents who gave us this information which led to the arrests and seizure of these drugs,” Thakeng said.

’n GEWONE oggendstort het verlede Donderdag vir die Venters van Odendaalsrus in ’n nagmerrie ontaard. ’n Elektriese stroom het onverklaarbaar deur die handstort getrek en vir Ansie, onderstebo geskok. Die Venters woon in Hospitaalpark en is albei kapteins in die polisie. Hulle woon in die gebied waar baie kragprobleme met ou kabels ondervind word en wonder nou of dit dalk kon bydra tot hulle nare ondervinding. Ansie het aan Vista vertel sy was reeds klaar gestort en wou die handstuk gebruik om die seepskuim weg te spuit toe sy die skok van haar lewe gekry het. Die handstort, wat al vyf jaar gelede geïnstalleer is, het Ansie begin skok. Die elektriese stroom het deur haar hand getrek en haar vingers toegetrek. Sy kon die handstort nie weer los nie. Met al die water op die stortvloer en die elektrisiteit wat deur haar lyf getrek het, het Ansie gedink dis haar laaste dag op aarde en net gebid om nie dood te gaan nie. Ansie sê sy kon sien hoe trek die elektriese stroom deur haar lyf. Haar hele lyf het geruk en

haar voete het so inmekaar getrek dat haar een enkel nou verstuit is. “Ek sal self nooit weer my voete in daardie posisie gedraai kry nie.” sê Ansie. Ansie se man Koos het die slag gehoor toe Ansie teen die stortdeure val en haar te hulp gesnel. Teen dié tyd het die aardlekasie gelukkig al uitgeskop, maar Ansie het steeds geruk. Ansie was Donderdag (22/10) vir ’n kort rukkie in die MediClinic Welkom vir observasie omdat haar hart baie onreëlmatig geklop het. Sy is reeds weer dieselfde dag ontslaan. Sy sê haar tone is styf en blou en een enkel is baie seer maar sy is baie dankbaar om te leef. ’n Plaaslike dokter, dr. Renier Colyn, het aan Ansie gesê die elektriese stroom het gelukkig deur haar arm en bene gegaan maar nie direk deur haar hart nie. Op haar Facebookblad het Ansie geskryf: Vader, U geduld en liefde vul my. U heerlikheid maak my opgewonde. U het my geskep, U ken my, U glo in my. En U het my lief. Woorde is onvoldoende om U te vertel van my liefde vir U. Luister liewer na die klop van my hart. Dankie Here vir nog n kans wat ek gekry het Amen!

Awards for Hoopstad DCS THE Hoopstad Department of Correctional Services (DCS) was the big winner at the Free State Corrections Excellence Awards for 2014-’15 held at the Bizzah Makhate Management Area in Kroonstad on Wednesday (21/10). The Hoopstad centre received the overall accolade after being voted the best in the Free State and Northern Cape Region, with two officers, Dirkie Kotze (head of community corrections) and Roger Khunou (unit manager), taking individual Batho Pele Awards each. Kotze also received the prestigious National Commissioners Award which was presented by Subashni Moodley, regional commissioner of the Free State and Northern Cape. The individual awards were for excellent performance, while the centre was recognized for rendering service in the Free State

and Northern Cape region. Kotze will represent the Bizzah Makhate Management Area, as well as the Hoopstad DCS in the upcoming Regional Excellence Awards, where the best of the best will be recognized. The DCS presents the awards to motivate and recognise employees for their hard work during the year and for going the the extra mile to ensure that DCS renders service. Kotze says receiving two awards is a huge honour and makes him feel privileged to be part of the DCS and Hoopstad DCS. He said he was grateful for the support he always received from colleagues and attributes his achievement to a good and strong team effort. “We are always very positive about our work at the DCS,” he says.

Sakeman oorlede DIE Goudveld neem afskeid van Johan Steyn, ’n bekende sakeman en duiweboer, wat op Maandag (26/10) skielik by sy woning in Jan Cellierspark, Welkom, oorlede is. Steyn was ’n bekende rekenmeester wat meer as 40 jaar in Welkom gepraktiseer het. Hy was ook ’n duiweboer van formaat en ’n duiweklubkampioen vir die afgelope vyf jaar. Vyf gevonnis ná aanrandings Alet van der Walt

’n GROEP bekende jong mans van Ventersburg is verlede Donderdag deur landdros Ian Redelinghuys groot boetes opgelê nadat hulle skuldig gepleit het op aanklagte van ernstige aanranding, crimen injuria, gewone aanranding en kwaadwillige saakbeskadiging. Redelinghuys het in sy uitspraak gesê die groep het mense soos diere gejag om aan hul woede uiting te gee Hy het gesê die mans kom uit vooraanstaande families en hul optrede hoort nie by mense van hul aansien nie. Ted (29) en Hendri (28) van Wyk, William Poggenpoel (30), Pieter Kleynhans (30) en Olaf Abram Wilken (32) het skuld op aanklagte van gewone aanranding en aanranding met die doel om ernstig te beseer, crimen injuria en opsetlike saakbeskadiging beken. Nie almal het op al die aanklagte tereggestaan nie. Die Van Wyks is die seuns van dr. Piet van Wyk, ’n plaaslike algemene praktisyn en boer van Ventersburg. Die vyf mans het skuld beken op aanklagte wat met ’n voorval op 1 Desember 2012 op die Van Wyks se familieplaas, Bloemskraal, verband hou. Die aand het Rentia Kleynhans (24) en ’n vriend, Kane Prinsloo (23), die 21ste verjaardagpartytjie van die Van Wyk-broers se suster, Marga, bygewoon.

’n Stryery het ontstaan en Kane en Rentia het besluit om liewer te ry. Die mans het die twee toe in drie bakkies agternagesit. Rentia se motor is van die plaaspad gedwing en hulle is aangeval. Kane is so erg aangerand dat twee dokters aan hom gesê het hy kon dood gewees het en dat sy goeie liggaamsbou sy organe beskerm het. Poggenpoel is R5 000 of drie maande tronkstraf vir gewone aanranding op Rentia opgelê. Ted van Wyk is gevonnis tot R2 500 of 30 dae tronkstraf vir die crimen injuria-aanklag op Rentia. Hy is ook met R2 500 beboet of 30 dae tronkstraf opgelê vir gewone aanranding op Kane. Ted van Wyk het ook, saam met Wilken, elk ’n straf van R20 000 of ses maande tronkstraf vir kwaadwillige saakbeskadiging van Rentia se voertuig ontvang. Kleynhans is ’n boete van R10 000 of drie maande tronkstraf vir kwaadwillige saakbeskading opgelê. Al vyf die mans is tot twee jaar tronkstraf gevonnis op die aanklag van aanranding met die doel om ernstig te beseer. Die vonnis is vir vyf jaar opgeskort op voorwaarde dat hulle nie weer aan gewone of ernstige aanranding skuldig bevind word nie. Shane Lewis het vir die staat opgetree en adv. Johan Nel vir die beskuldiges.

HENDRI VAN WYK is saam met sy broer en nog drie an der mans aangekla nadat hulle ’n man en ’n vrou aange val het.

Psige van ’n grafmoordenaar VISTA het met Jana van der Merwe, die skrywer van Grave Murder, die insiggewende boek ná die grusame moord wat in April 2011 in Welkom plaasgevind het, gepraat. Hoekom het jy die boek geskryf? Ek was ’n misdaadverslaggewer by Volksblad in Bloemfontein toe die koerant destyds die moord op die jong Michael van Eck in die Welkomse begraafplaas gebreek het. Dit was kort voor middernag, Sondag 3 April 2011, toe my voormalige huismaat en Volksblad se digitale redakteur, MJ Lourens, met ’n gedrukte afskrif van Volksblad se voorblad by die huis aankom. Hy het net gesê: “Jy gaan nie glo wat het in Welkom gebeur nie.” En hy was reg. Daardie nag kon ek nie slaap nie en het die vrae in my kop bly maal. Hoekom juis hierdie skoongesig jong man, hoekom is sy ledemate verwyder, hoekom in die begraafplaas en wie sal so iets doen? Maar meer as enigiets wou ek weet hóékom dit gebeur het. Ek dink almal het gou besef hierdie was geen gewone moord nie. Die een onthulling was meer skrikwekkend as die volgende. Dit was ’n tyd dat ek gedink het niks kan my meer skok nie. Ek het kort tevore nog in Volksblad se buitekantoor in Bethlehem gewerk en voor dit vir die gemeenskapskoerant, Vrystaat. Een van die laaste moorde wat ek gedek het, was die moord op die egpaar, Attie en Wilna Potgieter en hul tweejarige dogtertjie Willemientjie, op hul huurplaas buite Lindley. Attie is buite die plaashuis met onder meer ’n panga doodgekap en Wilna en hul kleuterdogtertjie is binne die huis tereggestel. Ek was daar toe die Potgieters se lyke na die lykswa gedra en die gesin van drie se lyke opmekaargestapel word. Ek het ure tevore met die drie “geskokte” plaaswerkers op die toneel onderhoude gevoer, minwetend dat hulle die hoofverdagtes was. Anders as die grafmoord het hulle ander motiewe gehad. Die roof van die Potgieters en die moorde om hulle stil te maak was, soos talle ander geweldsmisdade, vir eie finansiële gewin. Die moord in Welkom was anders. Hier was twee mense met hul eie fantasieë, wat dit ’n motief van ’n bisarre sielkundige aard gemaak het. In die dae, weke en maande ná die moord op Michael, het ek en kollegas bespiegel dat dit sekerlik iets is wat net iemand soos Stephen King kon uitdink. Uit ’n joernalistieke of skrywersoogpunt was dit beslis die

DIE begraafplaasmoord van April 2011 het Welkom geruk en die seer en smart van daardie gebeure lê nog diep in die hart van die mense wat deur dié sinnelose moord geraak is. Jana van der Merwe, oudverslaggewer van Volksblad en Beeld, en nou by die tydskrif Huisgenoot, het die boek Grave

materiaal vir ’n ware misdaadboek of ’n rillerrolprent. Ek dink ek het toe reeds in my agterkop besluit as ek ooit ’n boek sou skryf, sou dit oor die grafmoord wees. Eers twee jaar later, toe ek in 2013 by Rapport in Johannesburg aansluit en ’n kollega besig was met sy boek oor ’n ware Suid-Afrikaanse misdaadverhaal, het ek byna op die ingewing van die oomblik my voorneme vir die boek aan sy uitgewer voorgestel. Dit was vir my ’n verrassing toe Penguin Random House instem. Die vertelling van die moord was vir my ’n soeke na antwoorde wat daardie eerste nag reeds in my kop gemaal het. Ek het gehoop om vir myself, en vir almal wat daarvan gehoor of die betrokkenes geken het, insae te gee oor die psiges van die onwaarskynlike moordenaars – die jong moordpaartjie, Chané van Heerden en Maartens van der Merwe.

Tot watter insae het jy met die skryf van die boek gekom? Omdat Volksblad en ander media so in diepte oor die saak verslag gedoen en ek die saak so nou gevolg het en per geleentheid daaroor verslag gedoen het, het ek gedink: hoe moeilik kan dit wees om die storie te vertel. Maar ek het baie gou agtergekom ek was baie verkeerd. Daar was groot gapings om te vul: die fynere detail van die moordenaars se lewe, die aanloop na die misdaad en die afloop daarvan. Dit was ’n baie moeilike boek om te skryf. Om mee te begin, wou niemand met my praat nie. Dit het elke greintjie van my joernalistieke ervaring geverg om die misdaad te ondersoek. Ek het die boek oor twee jaar in my eie tyd geskryf en het begin deur tyd in Welkom deur te bring wanneer ek ’n kans gekry het. Ek het die moordtoneel besoek en as’t ware uit elke moontlike hoek my navorsing gedoen. Ek het met verskeie mense gepraat wat daardie Sondagoggend eerste op die toneel was. Ek is Bethlehem toe om met ao. Fanie du Plessis van die Bethlehemse K9-eenheid te praat wat Michael se onthoofde en opgesnyde lyk in ’n vlak graf ontdek het. Ek het met die ervare en betrokke polisiefotograaf, ao. Ernst de Ru, in Kroonstad gepraat wat ’n baie fyn waarnemer van die gebeure was vandat Michael se lyk in die begraafplaas ontdek is totdat die res van sy liggaam in die tuinwoonstel in Unicorstraat gekry en die moordenaars in hegtenis geneem is. Dan was daar natuurlik lt.kol. Ogies Nel en die senior staatsaanklaer, adv. Johan de Nysschen wat die saak uit elke hoek en in diepte geken het. Ek het met verskeie polisielede, forensiese

Murder in September uitgereik. Terwyl Vista besef dat die boek ou en diep wonde gaan oopkrap, gee ons vandag ’n platform aan die bekendstelling van die boek en die jong skrywer wat die verskriklike verhaal neergepen het. Jana het met deernis geskryf en ook baie omvattende navorsing gedoen.

Dit was alles gesprekke wat oor ’n tydperk van vier jaar geduur het. Eindelik het ek toegang tot al die toneelfoto’s, psigiatriese verslae, die polisiedossier en hofdokumente gehad. Dit het ook die duisende SMS’e tussen die beskuldigdes en hul familie ingesluit. Dit was uitmergelende harde werk en ook baie traumaties om in die koppe van Chané en Maartens te probeer kom. Ek het saans, soms tot in die oggendure ná ’n lang dag in die veld gesit en skryf. Ek het in daardie stadium die meeste van my dae in die Johannesburgse hooggeregshof vir Beeld deurgebring, wat opsigself bloedsweet was. Stadig maar seker het alles bymekaargekom. Ek het nie net ongelooflike empatie met Michael se familie (veral sy ma, Henriëtte) gehad nie, maar ook gevind dat ek baie simpatie met veral Maartens se pa en ma, en Chané se pa ontwikkel het. Hulle was soos die res van die land uiters geskok oor wat gebeur het en het dit JANA VAN DER MERWE vir seker nooit in hul wildste drome gesien kom of geweet dat hul kinders tot so iets in dade wou put of dit herleef. See you soon,’ Steyn said, and put down the phone. Nel realised that the Game store was just across the road from the hospital and that they were still several kilometres away, where they had been searching the area around the dam. She and her colleagues had all heard it over the speakerphone: the girl had said ‘we’. They dropped everything and immediately made their way to the hospital. Steyn, Van Zyl and Krügel passed St Helena again as they sped in the direction of the Welkom Mediclinic, fearing that the girl, the last person Michael had contacted on his cellphone, would beat them to it and find out that she had been

lied to. Relief flushed over them when they got to the hospital’s casualties area and could not spot anyone who would match the young voice on the cellphone. ‘Good afternoon, Janet,’ Van Zyl said upon reaching the reception desk, peering at the shiny badge on the hospital official’s uniform. Van Zyl showed the woman his ID card. ‘I’m Detective Eben van Zyl from the SAPS,’ he said. ‘We are conducting an investigation. If anyone inquires about identifying a victim of a motorvehicle accident or asks for “Dr Mitchell”, I would appreciate it if you could direct them straight to me and my colleagues. The couple’s hands were tightly entwined as they strolled into the entrance hall at a slow, steady pace, as if they had all the time in the world. Nel observed that they did not stop at the admissions desk or turn towards the wards, but walked straight to the casualty ward. To Nel, this was a sign that this could be the girl who had answered Michael’s last cellphone call. She turned and followed the couple. Nel joined up with Steyn and Van Zyl and quietly pointed out the couple to them. The three of them watched intently as the young couple approached the reception desk in the casualty ward. While she was talking to a uniformed hospital official, the girl turned her head and made eye contact with the police officers for the first time. Could this unobtrusive-looking couple be responsible for Michael van Eck’s murder?

Kunswerke soek baas

DIE bekende kunsonderwyseres, Elsje Odendaal, met van die kunswerke van haar leerlinge wat sy graag aan hulle wil terugbesorg. Molly Green DIE bekende deurwinterde kunsonderwyser, Elsje Odendaal, probeer om verskeie oud-leerlinge op te spoor van wie sy nog uitstekende kunswerke in haar besit het. “Vir my is kinderkuns nog net so belangrik as wat dit dekades gelede was. ’n Kind slaag daarin om met sy onskuld ’n

beeld weer te gee soos net hy of sy dit kan doen.” Sy het onlangs op ’n hele stapel kunswerke afgekom wat in ’n kas gebêre is. Die name van die kunstenaars is agterop geskryf. Van die oud-leerlinge wat sy graag wil opspoor, is onder andere Fanie Wurth, Lizelle Spangenberg, Salome Prinsloo en

Mauritz le Roux. Dié bekende inwoner van Welkom het in 1960 kunsklas begin gee. Sy was onder meer kunsonderwyser by die St Helena Primêre Skool in Welkom. Ná haar aftrede het sy die Odendaalkunsskool begin. Van haar studente het nasionale diplomas vir hul kunswerke verwerf en

verskeie van haar leerlinge se kunswerke is in die Santam-kunskalender ingesluit. Sy het van haar oud-leerlinge verskeie kere probeer bel, maar geen reaksie is ontvang nie. “Ek weet nie wat om te doen nie. ’n Mens kan dié kunswerke nie weggooi nie.” Rig navrae aan Elsje by 082-220-6934.

Howard says they diligently keep the animals vaccinated, and many of the strays need veterinary attention. “Our veterinary bill at Dr Thys de Vries has reached astronomical proportions. “We urgently need funds to alleviate the burden of this bill, as well as money to cover running costs to keep the society going. “Please help,” asks Howard. Clarisse Fourie verteenwoordig die Vrystaat in dressage-preliminêr 3 en 4, vertoonrykuns vlak drie, vertoonspring 70 cm en ekstreme ruiterkuns vlak 3 as Span Gouties, saam met Nichia van Jaarsveld. Sy het die algehele vierde plek in vertoonrykuns in die Vrystaat verdien. Clarisse het die vyfde plek in die victrix ludorum-afdeling behaal. Clarisse en Nichia is die algehele

wenners van die ekstreme ruiterkuns afdeling in die Vrystaat. Nichia is as algehele wenner en beste ruiter in die Vrystaat in die volgende nommers aangewys: working hunter 80 cm, ruiterkuns 80 cm en vertoonspring 80 cm. Nichia en Clarisse, as Span Gouties, is die algehele wenners van die ekstreme ruiterkuns-afdeling. Daarby is Nichia as die victrix ludorum in die hoërskoolafdeling van die South African National Equestrian Schools Association (Sanesa) aangewys. Dié drie het derde in die algehele jaarlikse kompetisie van Sanesa in die Vrystaat geëindig en ’n eerste plek met ’n puntetotaal van 8 490 vir die afdeling vir vier tot ses ruiters behaal.

Golden oldies still competing THE Northern Free State Fury Golden Oldies rugby team is one of more than 20 teams from all over the country that participated in the Annual Oldies Festival in Cape Town. This year the festival was hosted by the Durbanville Rugby Club. The players are representatives of the Northern Free State, that is affiliated to the Griffons Rugby Union, the official sponsor for the team. The Goldfields Casino sponsored jackets for the over-35 age group that forms part of

the Golden Oldies Sporting Movement. The international movement is aimed at bringing together sportsmen and -women over the age of 35 to participate in their favourite sports. “We are proud to have supported the team at the festival. Wenner blink uit in judo, rugby OKTOBER se wenner van SuperSport Let’s Play Sportster van die maand vir Vista is Juan De Bruyn (18), ’n leerling aan die Goudveld-Hoërskool in Welkom. Juan is ’n uitblinker in Judo, asook rugby. Juan is lid van die Noord-Vrystaatse judo-span, verwerf sy judo nasionale klere (Protea-kleure) en is tweede op die Suid-Afrikaanse (SA) ranglys in groep 5 (ouderdom 18 tot 20 jaar), gewigsklas, 100 kg plus. Tydens die Judo SA kampioenskappe in Stellenbosch wen hy ’n bronsmedalje. Daarna vertrek hy op 22 Julie na Sharm El-Sheikh, Egipte as deel van die SuidAfrikaanse Junior Judo Protea-span. Hy het deelgeneem aan die Afrika

Junior Jeugkampioenskappe en het algeheel vyfde gekom in groep 5 (ouderdom 18 tot 20 jaar), gewigsklas 100 kg plus. Gedurende Augustus neem hy deel aan die Judo-nasionale keuring. Hy wen ’n silwermedalje in groep 5, asook ’n bronsmedalje in groep 6 (ouderdom 21 – 29 jaar). Vanweë sy posisie op die Suid-Afrikaanse ranglys, gaan hy deel wees van die span wat aan die Judo-statebondspele in 2016 in Port Elizabeth gaan deelneem. Buiten judo speel Juan vir die Goudveld-Hoërskool se eerste rugbyspan slot. Hy was ook deel van die eerste rugby-toerspan wat deelgeneem het aan die Sportweni-kampioenskappe in Port Shepstone, KwaZulu-Natal.

RISING footballer Teboho Mokoena, currently with the Virginia (Harmony) Sports Academy, has grabbed the chance to launch his football career with SuperSport United’s junior side with both hands. He sealed a deal with the Premier Soccer League (PSL) giants SuperSport a month ago. The utility player has never looked back since making his debut against Bloemfontein Celtic, despite his team losing the game by 0-1 in the Multichoice Diski Challenge in September. Mokoena has featured in six matches, starting in all the games. He made his sixth appearance in the colours of SuperSport during the two-day Multichoice Diski Challenge festival staged at the Seisa Ramabodu Stadium in Bloemfontein last Saturday (24/10). His team played against Orlando Pirates in one of the games and shared the spoils after playing to a three-all draw in a tightly contested fixture. Mokoena’s impressive form has made him an integral part of SuperSport junior side currently led by coach Macbeth Sibaya, a retired Bafana Bafana midfielder.
