Donations bring relief Marti Will MORE than 10 000 litres of water and 75 kg of square bales of fodder have been delivered to the drought stricken informal communities of Winburg. Michelle Wolmarans and her Animal Caring Team (ACT) teamed up with Water Shortage South Africa (WSSA), Cell C and RAM Courier Services to enable this amazing humanitarian gesture. The dedicated team of the Virginia SPCA delivered the goods on Saturday (06/02). Together, these remarkable people have donated thousands of liters of water, lucerne and food for the struggling farmers and their animals. “There will also be a delivery of a superlink load of big round bales of eragrostis to the Virginia SPCA by the end of this week. This feed should be sufficient to see the struggling farmers through the winter that lies ahead and will hopefully allow the land time to recover,” says Thea Smit, chairperson of the Virginia SPCA. Smit says most people are aware of the effect of the terrible drought which South Africa, and the Free State, has had to endure. “Few people are, however, aware of the terrible suffering of the animals on the farms and commonages,” says Smit. Some of the cases they encountered on Saturday were so bad that only humane euthanasia could end the suffering of the

animals. “We were blessed with donations from all over South Africa. This generosity and compassion of people has given us at the SPCA new hope and faith in humankind.” Virginia SPCA, with the sponsorship of S&S Cartage and their trucks, undertook to distribute the food and water to the needy. “It was a day filled with emotion. Mostly joy that we were able to help, but also sadness for those we could not save in time. We could at least end their suffering. We even came across children with their dogs. We could assist them with donated food and water,” says Smit. As the SPCA’s team worked through the area, they came across saddened cattle owners. “Some of them begged for mercy for their animals and did not even want the meat from the carcasses. They only wanted the suffering to end. The ones that we could still save, were blessed with donated food and water.” Smit says organisations and businesses continue to donate and the Virginia SPCA will continue to distribute. “The drought is a national disaster and people need to get involved and assist in any way you can. Never in our text will it ever read that we gave up. Thank you to all the generous donors. Your kindness does not go unnoticed, and especially not by the many animals we bring relief to,” says Smit.
