Saved from horror house Disabled mother and son removed from dire circumstances Teboho Setena DUE to an apparent lack of good care and the effects of starvation, a disabled young man from Bronville in Welkom, Selwyn van Schalkwyk (25), was admitted to the Bongani Regional Hospital. Selwyn is blind and physically disabled. His mother, Sharon (43), is also blind. The two were found in a dire situation in their house in Bronville Z starving to death under their live-in family’s noses. Vista reliably learnt that Selwyn was admitted to hospital on Wednesday, 17 February, and after receiving treatment, his condition had gradually been improving. His health condition was reportedly not critical.
Urgent measures to save them from the suffering saw Sharon being taken away by extended family to live with them in Bloemfontein. She was reportedly taken to Bloemfontein on Saturday, 20 February. Selwyn remains at the Bongani Hospital where he is being taken care off. Due to the lack of care and vulnerability of Selwyn and his mother, Sharon, it was decided that he remained at the hospital in Welkom until alternative accommodation could be found for both of them, a source at the hospital said. Sharon and her son have been subjected to neglect in the house they shared with six unemployed adults. There have been numerous enquiries from people offering to help the disabled
mother and her son. Efforts to rescue Sharon and her son have come in the form of donations of food from community members. Augusta Steyn, the director of the Goldfields Free State Society for the Blind, said: “We are severely shocked to see how neglected the blind woman and her son are. “The Goldfields Society for the Blind was rendering services to that family over a period of time. Services were rendered by different people from our organisation. “The last major input we made was visiting on a weekly basis to deliver food which was cooked by volunteers in the community by special arrangements from our side. “For a month we were allowed by the
clients to administrate their finances. “We even had to buy underwear, seeing that the sisters at the clinics informed us that they did not even have underwear,” said Steyn. She said their organisation had stopped rendering services after Sharon and Selwyn’s SASSA cards had been reported stolen, allegedly by a family member. This happened while their organisation was administrating the funds. “This was done without informing us. We had to find out that the cards were stopped when we wanted to buy food for the mother and her son,” said Steyn. ) Efforts by Vista to get comment from two family members present at the house on Friday (19/02) were futile after being violently confronted and chased away.

“PRAISE be to God our Creator. He has intervened in the Hospice crisis and averted the closure of this facility.” So said a greatful Marli Young, general manager of the Goldfields Hospice Association, when she heard that the National Lotteries Commission (NLC) would be giving the hospice a grant that would ensure its operation for at least another year. “We will only be getting the payment in two months’ time, so we will urgently need additional funding for the next two months to make ends meet – salaries are paid and services are provided on an ongoing basis,” said Marli. “If we pull our socks up and garner funding from donors, there will be no need to close this facility.”
Marli said she was especially thankful to the local Lotto office in Welkom. “When Mavis Malobi, the assistant manager, heard of our plight, she pulled out all the stops to get the grant application approved. The total closure of the Goldfields Hospice after 28 years was so real, it was scary. And then Mavis telephoned me and the grant application approval was put into action,” said Marli. “We make an appeal to the local communities to become involved and make us aware of their plight and what is going on,” said Thokozile Mandyu, provincial manager of the NLC, stationed in Welkom. Thokozile, Mavis and the local team have a heart for the Goldfields and would like to be made aware of their communities and in so doing, become active in bringing about change.
