Burglars target 2 clinics Service to community disrupted Teboho Setena BURGLARIES at two primary health-care clinics in the Kutlwanong township near Odendaalsrus continue to cripple delivery of service to the community. Criminals dealing in copper and electrical cables staged daring break-ins at night at the two clinics, Phedisanang in K4 and Boithusong in Block 4. The Department of Health has incurred huge losses because of these burglaries. Efforts by Vista in getting the department’s comment regarding the value of the damaged properties and the cost of replacements were futile. During the weekend of 19 to 21 March, criminals struck twice at the Boithusong clinic, ransacking the building and stripping copper cables, steel pipes and taps. Some windows and doors were badly damaged. The burglary followed the one that occurred a month ago at the Phedisanang Clinic. To gain access to the two clinics, the burglars broke through part of the roof from the outside, after which they found their way through the ceiling to reach their targets. The worrying thing about the burglaries is that they occurred right under the noses of contracted security and of members of the community, as well as the nearby Kutlwanong Police Station. The burglaries have caused frustration among scores of patients who had to return home without receiving treatment and who also have had to wait in long queues outside the facilities to be served. The nurses at the clinic are equally affected, as their workload has also increased. The workload includes re-registration of patients and the opening of new record files after several of these were found soaked in water coming from the

LOCAL hairstylist Malefane “Fire” Lehlehla is one of the 14 finalists vying for the 2016 HairXperts Masters Challenge national prize, a nationwide Sofn’free competition. The Welkom stylist, together with 13 other contestants, was chosen out of the nearly 3 000 stylists who had entered from around the country. A national panel of judges, headed by Disce Mamabolo, selected the finest hairstylists across the country, identifying 14 contestants to endure seven weeks of intense challenges in the style-off phase. The chosen 14 stylists are representative of seven provinces. The Free State has two finalists, “Fire” Lehlehla and Tshediso Tshabalala from Bethlehem. The hairstylist with the magic touch, Lehlehla is the Free State winner for 2015 Sofn’free HairXperts Master and was one of the seven national finalists last year. Last year, he beat 109 contestants to the first prize provincially and he repeated the feat by winning the 2016 provincial leg to qualify for this year’s national final.
Lehlehla said he had been inspired by his uncle, Oupa Masubele, who also manages his own salon, and attributed his success to his uncle’s mentoring. “I acquired knowledge and skills learning hands-on from my uncle, Masubele. I studied everything, practical and theory, in the salon under his mentorship. He is my inspiration,” he said. Lehlehla’s experience as a hairstylist spans over 12 years. He said his passion and mentoring by his uncle had inspired him to greater heights by opening his own salon called Fire @ Worx in the heart of Welkom. The salon has been operating for years and growing from strength to strength. He has employed ten people, mostly women. “My ambition is to go international to showcase my creativity,” said Lehlehla. The competition will see each stylist being put through challenges to test their creativity and competence in creating edgy styles, which involve analysing, treating and styling the full spectrum of black hair, from natural to relaxed hair. The show is aired every Tuesday on SABC1 between 21:00 and 22:00.

Dit sou die regte optrede wees indien elke eienaar van eiendom maandeliks R5 per eiendom aan die BBV betaal om aan hulle die wetlik afdwingbare regsmag te gee om ons saak tot in die hof te veg as dit nodig sou wees. Ons benodig dringend professionele regslui se ondersteuning en insette in gemeenskapsbelang. Doellose roekelose wanbesteding van amptenare getuig van growwe skending van ons regte deur onbevoegde bestuurders in ons diens wat met óns geld betaal word. Soos in enige onderneming moet ’n mens die pos ontruim indien jy nie waarde-vir-geld dienste lewer nie. Die stadsbestuurder en sy departementele bestuurders moet tot
waarde-vir-geld dienste gedwing word of “hulle POSBUS /P.O. BOX 1027 moet val!” Hulle ontvang WELKOM 9460 professionele vergoeding en dit is ons reg om professionele dienste te eis. Betreurenswaardig is ’n vars klagte in Vista oor die weliggroeiende gras op die padskouers en die onafgehandelde herstel van waterlekke waarvan die gate vir maande gelos word. Is dit nie ’n oplossing om water- en kragheffings in ’n sentrale, aparte raadsrekening in te betaal waar die raadslede en die BBV sáám magtiging het om dit aan die diensverskaffers te betaal nie? Dit sal ons teen opskorting van dienste weens wanbetaling beskerm. Die raad behoort homself te vergewis wat die koste is om een kilometer teerpad te herbou. Die paaie behoort aan die inwoners van ons dorpe en onderhoud is nie verder onderhandelbaar nie. Ons intelligensie word bespotlik gemaak deur gou ná werksure en op ’n Saterdag teen dubbelvergoeding die padprobleme kamma aan te pak. Die gras op die padskouers word slegs op die hoofroetes met bossiekappers korter gesny. Dit laat die gras net weliger sywaarts groei om skade groter te maak. Waar is die

Ons gebruik peperduur vullisverwyderingsdienste na ure, wat vergoedingsuitgawes verdubbel, terwyl ons duur voertuie het, maar wat geskut is weens skuld. Verskeie lamppale wat teen duisende rande geïnstalleer is, is weg. Veral op die Koppie Alleen-pad. Wat is die verhouding van wanbetaling van dienste teenoor die maandelikse rekeninge wel ingevorder? Die raad hef tog rente teen wanbetalers en skort dienste op totdat die agterstallige bedrae betaal is. Raadslede en die belastingbetalersvereniging sal dringend moet ingryp om te verhoed dat die raad nie onder administrasie geplaas word nie. The Vista article focuses on how much difficulty we have socially, instead of seeing a non-compliance to social pressure as something that enables us to be honest, loyal and committed to our goals and values, without getting sidetracked. Something which enables us to judge people for who they are without prejudices of age, race, social standing or gender. The puzzle picture mentions a narrow range of interests as if this is a problem, but it also makes us specialists who excel in our fields. It does not even mention the creativity and out-of-the-box thinking many Aspies have. (Look up the internet article “Strengths & Advantages of being an Aspie!” on the blog “The other side”.) While sometimes we “have trouble understanding others’ feelings”, far more often I experience others having trouble understanding mine and ours: Because of the way we express ourselves, the truth we speak are called lies, we are socially ostracised, we are blamed for things people read into our actions or inactions and we are insulted because we do not “fit in”.

Residents given safety tips THE members of the Welkom Social Crime Prevention Unit together with the CPF (Community Policing Forum) of the Phomolong Village recently visited the settlement. During the visit community members were given safety tips regarding housebreakings, business robberies and murders, all of which occur in their precinct. Members of the community were taught how to protect themselves and their families against criminal activities committed in their village. “Most of the crimes are committed by illegal miners who are mostly Lesotho foreigners,” says Molebogeng Lechesa, Welkom Police Services. WO Semanga Dhlakisa urged the commu-
nity not to allow strangers into their homes as they might be the perpetrators of these crimes. Business owners were also warned to be on the alert for any strangers who pretended to buy or to sell goods to them or who pretended to be service delivery people. “Unknown people should produce their identification cards and a formal description of the company they work for to the home owners before they are allowed inside their houses or premises,” says Lechersa. During the awareness campaign the Welkom police told the community not to engage with these people as they were dangerous. “Community members must immediately alert the police about suspicious people.”

Die doelwit vir die dag is om 60 eenhede bloed in te samel. Die behoefte aan bloed neem nie af nie en pasiënte benodig steeds ongeveer 3 000 eenhede bloed per dag. Elke dag wat hierdie doelwit nie bereik word nie, word die beskikbare voorraad uitgeput. Om ’n bloedskenker te word, moet jy: ) Tussen die ouderdom van 16 en 65 wees. ) Meer as 50 kg weeg. ) Iets eet voordat jy bloed skenk. ) ’n Veilige seksuele leefstyl lei. ) Gesond wees op die dag van skenking. Jongboer neem die leisels Alet van der Walt ’n BEKENDE boer van Hennenman is begin Maart verkies om een van die grootste landbou-organisasies in Suid-Afrika te lei. Jaco Minnaar, wat in 2011 Vrystaat Landbou se jongboer van die jaar was, is onbestrede tot Graan SA se nuwe voorsitter verkies. Met ’n landbou-graad in ingenieurswese het hy ’n draai in Amerika gaan maak voordat hy voltyds in Hennenman op familiegrond kom boer het. Op Botesrust word daar met mielies, sonneblom, soja, bonsmara-beeste en wild geboer. Boerdery is in sy gene. Sy pa, Fiet, was ook ’n boer, maar is in ’n kwadfiets-ongeluk oorlede en Jaco en sy broer, Danie, het saam geboer totdat hulle in 2003 besluit het dat elkeen op sy eie deel van die boerdery fokus. Danie boer deesdae in Bothaville. Jaco sê hy glo daar is ’n toekoms vir boere in Suid-Afrika, anders sou hy nie self geboer het nie. Hy sal ook nie omgee as sy kinders eendag wil boer nie, maar dit moet
hul eie keuse wees. Dit is harde werk om so ’n groot organisasie te lei en soms moet hy tot vyf vergaderings per week bywoon. Op die oomblik onderhandel Graan SA met die regering om na maniere te kyk om boere en hul plaaswerkers te help. Boere se reserwes is uitgeput en Graan SA se eerste fokus is nou om geld te kry sodat boere weer volgende jaar kan plant. “Tussen 200 000 en 300 000 mense werk in die graanbedryf. Sommige graanboere in die Goudveld, asook in ander streke, betaal tot R1 miljoen se lone per jaar. Dit is noodsaaklik dat alles moontlik gedoen word om mense op plase te hou. Die plattelandse ekonomie kan nie sonder die landbou oorleef nie.” Minnaar sê voedselinflasie is reeds baie hoog. ’n Sak meel se prys van 80 kg het in twee jaar van R200 na R520 gestyg. Hy wil ook graag hê soveel moontlik graanboere moet hule by Graan SA aansluit sodat die organisasie se hand versterk kan word.

Talent can’t be stifled JULY RASHELENG’S love of painting and drawing has helped him uncover his hidden artistic talent. He has not studied anything relating to art to improve his artistic skills, but even if he wanted to study Art, money remains a big stumbling block. “Painting and drawing is something that has fascinated me from days gone by, even while at primary school,” says Rasheleng.
“I started to seriously focus on improving my artistic skills after completing matric, and also in the wake of my struggle to find a job. “Drawing and painting has become the means by which I survive and I have been doing it for more than three years.” Rasheleng’s creative work has manifested in different impressive displays, such as painting walls at preschools and in architect’s drawings.
He has also done work for businesses in Welkom. Rasheleng has a gr. 12 certificate, with Mathematics, Physical Sciences, Geography and Life Sciences as subjects. He completed gr. 12 in 2010 in his home town of Botshabelo. In his search for fortune, Rasheleng relocated to Welkom, where his artistic talent has been put to good use while he continues his search for a job.
Hofmeyr performing STEVE HOFMEYR will be performing at the Ernest Oppenheimer Theatre in Welkom on Thursday, 26 May. The show starts at 19:00, and tickets are available at the theatre. Jonges gereed vir kunste Molly Green DIE Vrystaat spog vanjaar met 54 deelnemers wat aan die Suid-Afrikaanse kampioenskap vir uitvoerende kunste van die South African Association of Talent, Modelling and Entertainment (SAATME) in Rustenburg gaan deelneem. Dié kampioenskap word as die “Olimpiese Spele” van die uitvoerende kunste beskou. Daar is drie vlakke van kompetisie. Die eerste vlak is die halfeindronde wat in November 2015 en Februarie 2016 in Bloemfontein en in Welkom plaasgevind het. Die tweede vlak vind van 1 tot 10 April in Rustenburg plaas en daarna gaan die deelnemers wat vir die Suid-Afrikaanse span gekies is, na Los Angeles in Amerika om aan die

Register to realise soccer dream Teboho Setena
This project has made it possible for a number of players to realise their childhood dream to play football in the country’s elite rank, the Premier Soccer League (PSL). Jarred Meyer, originating from Bloemfontein, is one such a fortunate player who had his dream realised through the initiative. He currently plays for Premiership side Jomo Cosmos. Meyer’s good display impressed a panel of coaches who selected him into the 18-man squad in 2015. Meyer encouraged his peers to emulate him during the talent search trials to be held countrywide, starting in April. “It is important to give your best and be a team player, because football is a team sport,” said Meyer. His ability impressed

Massyn ewenaar rekord Molly Green DIE bekende Goudveldse langasem, Louis Massyn, het die afgelope naweek sy 41ste Twee Oseane-marathon voltooi. Hy ewenaar nou die rekord saam met Tony Abrams van Kaapstad. Dit was die 47ste keer wat die Twee Oseane in die Kaap aangebied is. Louis sê sowat 11 000 inskrywings is vanjaar ontvang en nagenoeg 8 500 het die wedloop binne die toegelate tyd van sewe uur voltooi. Die Twee Oseanemarathon is, buiten die Comrades-marathon, die tweede grootste ultra-marathon in die land. “Ek het die Twee Oseane in ’n goeie tyd van ses uur en agt minute voltooi. Louis is ook na afloop van die mara-
thon vir ’n onderhoud met die Guardian van Londen genooi.

THREE talented athletes of the Real Lions Athletics Club in Welkom are in the Free State Athletics team and are competing in the South African u.23 juniors and youth championship in Germiston. They are Xaba Mavuso (1 500 m and 5 000 m), Mosuwe Lephaila (1 500 m) and Katleho Motsepi (10 000 m
walk). They aim to qualify for national and international competitions. The next national competition is the South African senior championship in Stellenbosch (15 and 16 April). Mavuso (22) wants to repeat his 2014 success, when he qualified for the international youth championship in Zimbabwe.

Hy het ook al saam met Chad geswem en dít het Cullen net nog meer gemotiveer om sy ideaal te bereik om Suid-Afrika in 2020 op die Olimpiese Spele te verteenwoordig. Dié hemelbesem het beslis nie agter die deur gestaan toe toewyding, wilskrag en deursettingsvermoë uitgedeel is nie. Hy is reeds byna twee meter lank en sal glad nie omgee as hy nog langer word nie. Cullen, wat in Welkom gebore is, was agt jaar oud toe hy begin swem het. Net ’n jaar later het hy vir die eerste keer aan die Suid-Afrikaanse Skole-swemkampioenskap in Kaapstad deelgeneem. “Ek het vyfde gekom, maar dit het nie my moed gebreek nie. Dit het my net gemotiveer om beter te vaar.” Sy eerste afrigter was Dave Miller. Ná Dave se dood het Arthur du Toit vir Cullen onder sy vlerk geneem. Nou word dié jong swemsensasie deur sy pa, Clinton, afgerig. Clinton het Suid-Afrikaanse kleure in lewensredding. Cullen is superfiks. Voor groot kampioenskappe is hy reeds

Cullen geniet ook redenaarskompetisies. Hy het op die afgelope Suid-Afrikaanse swemkampioenskap in Port Elizabeth vyf medaljes verower: goud in die 50 m-vlinderslag, silwer in die 100 m- en 200 m-rugslag, asook in die 100 m-vlinderslag, en brons in die 200 m- individuele wisselslag. Sy sterk punt is die vlinderslag. Tussen 700 en 800 swemmers het daar deelgeneem. Van 10 tot 16 April gaan hy aan die Suid-Afrikaanse senior swemkampioenskap in Durban deelneem. Dié kampioenskap dien as kwalifiseerder vir die Olimpiese Spele. Cullen het al twee keer in Italië deelgeneem. Dit was in 2013 en 2014. “Dit was lekker. Daar was eintlik minder stres as in Suid-Afrika.” Sy wenresep vir voordat hy wegspring, is: “Dink aan wat jy moet doen. Sê ’n gebedjie op en spring weg.” Oor sy toekomsplanne sê hy hy wil ná skool graag in Amerika gaan studeer. ’n Sportbeurs kan help om sy drome te bewaarheid. Cullen se ma, Annelene, sê haar seun volg nie ’n spesifieke dieet nie. Hy het ’n gesonde eetlus en het ’n soettand wat vir niks skrik nie. Sy boetie, Dale (12), gaan nie in Ouboet se swemvoetspore volg nie. Dié knaap speel rugby en krieket.
